Get in the game -By Harvey Mackay I know it’s already August, but this summer my thoughts can finally turn to the crack of the bat as I watch my Minnesota Twins “Bomba Squad” launch dinger after dinger! As much as I love basketball and football, there’s a certain magic about the great national pastime.

For me baseball is a learning experience and research, full of life lessons!

In one Peanuts cartoon Charlie Brown is having a bad day. He struck out for the third straight time. In disgust, he says, “Rats!”

Back in the dugout, he laments to Lucy, “I’ll never be a big-league ballplayer. All my life, I’ve dreamed of playing in the big leagues, but I just know I’ll never make it.”

Lucy responds, “You’re thinking way too far ahead, Charlie Brown. What you need are more immediate goals.”

“Immediate goals?” asks Charlie.

“Yes,” says Lucy. “Start right now with this next inning. When you go out to pitch, see if you can walk out to the mound without falling down.”

Moral: Most importantly, goals need to be realistic: beyond your grasp but

Next, don’t let excuses get in the way of being successful.

When it comes to getting things done, I have a philosophy: “Find a way, or make one.” I don’t tolerate excuses, and you shouldn’t either.

A high school baseball coach was so frustrated with his first baseman who made error after error. At practice the coach grabbed a glove to show the player how it should be done. The first grounder took a bad hop and clobbered him in the chest.

Next came a pop up that he lost in the sun and smashed into his forehead. Later a wild throw from the shortstop caused him to stretch, tearing his pants. Exasperated, the coach turned to his first baseman and shouted, “You’ve got this position so messed up, even I can’t do a thing with it.”

Moral: The person who wants to do something finds a way; the person who doesn’t finds an excuse.

We all have weaknesses, whether it’s baseball or business.

Baseball great Stan Musial was having a field day against the Chicago Cubs’ pitcher Bobo Newsom. Stan “the Man” first slammed a single, then a triple and a home run. When he came to bat for the fourth time, the Chicago manager decided to yank Bobo and take a chance on a rookie relief pitcher. The rookie trudged in from the bullpen, took the ball from Bobo, and asked, “Has this guy Musial got any weaknesses?”

“Yea,” replied Bobo, “he can’t hit doubles.”

Moral: The greatest of all weaknesses is to be conscious of none.

Maintaining a good reputation can help you in bad circumstances by giving you the benefit of the doubt. Rogers Hornsby, considered to be among the greatest righthanded hitters in baseball history, had a lifetime batting average of .358. In 1924 he hit .424 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He also had a reputation for excellence, good judgment and integrity.

The story goes that Hornsby came to bat one day against a flashy rookie pitcher with a blazing fastball.

“Whoosh” went the first pitch to Hornsby, who kept his bat cocked.

“Ball one,” said the umpire.

Second pitch and third pitches, same story.

Angry and frustrated, the young pitcher shouted at the umpire, “Those three pitches were all strikes!”

“Young man,” said the umpire, “when you throw a strike, Mr. Hornsby will let you know.”

Moral: You can’t buy a good reputation; you must earn it I often get asked when I am going to retire. I’m still active as chairman of MackayMitchell Envelope Company, maintain a schedule of corporate speeches, write this nationally syndicated weekly column, manage my Harvey Mackay Academy and I recently finished my eighth book, “You Haven’t Hit Your Peak Yet!” In short, I’m too busy to retire.

Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder Paul Waner was asked when he would know when it was time to quit baseball.

“Well,” said Waner, “as you get older, you slow down and the infielders back up because they’ve got more time to throw you out at first base. At the same time you lose a little power, so the outfielders move in because you aren’t hitting the ball so far.” Then he added, “When they can shake hands, you’ve had it.”

Moral: A person doesn’t become old until regrets take the place of dreams.

Mackay’s Moral: No matter when the season begins, start business “spring training” so you can win the World Series.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Modernization Ever think about how agriculture has changed in the last 100 years?

100 years ago, the number of cultivated acres per farm were much less. A farm may have 10 cows, 6 sow pigs, 150 chickens, 12 head of young stock, 20 smaller pigs, a bull, a boar pig and 2 horses. A rather different inventory than farms of today.

A 100 years ago, a section of cultivated land probably supported 5 family farms. Since families were larger in the past, that number of farms was home for about 30 people. These farms were designed to create enough food to support the farm animals. If it was a good year, there may be some oats or corn available to sell. If it was a bad year, there usually wasn’t enough extra money to buy feed, so the number of farm animals was reduced. The ultimate goal was to keep the family fed and keep possession of the farm.

Milking in the early years was done by hand as it had been done for centuries.

The improvement was having a separator, which reduced the milk volume by about 95% and created cream, which was more valuable and easier to keep cool than whole milk. The cream and eggs were taken to town to sell about once per week.

The eggs were usually picked and the chickens fed by mother or one of the kids.

As a result, the money from the eggs was frequently mother’s money to be used to buy groceries and if any was left, it was used to buy cloth to be used for sewing her family’s clothing. It was common for mother to take the team and wagon

to town with the cream and milk, which allowed those left on the farm to continue their projects on the farm.

Today we usually see Holsteins on a dairy farm, but looking back we saw many brown cows on the farm. They were Shorthorns and Guernseys and were felt to have higher cream content in their milk. They gave less milk and as a result, there was less milk to run through the separator.

Along came the tractors. At first, since farms were smaller and the farmer, being conservative after the previous bad years, usually purchased a small tractor. The first tractors were able to use the horsedrawn farm implements still on the farm, which reduced the expense of buying new tractor machinery. It seemed that it was not expensive to add a hitch in place of the horse hook-up. The use of tractors and horse machinery did not actually allow the farmer to greatly increase production, but the tractor was usually easier to control.

The farmer could then brag that he had a tractor over at his place.

The horse machinery frequently was not adapted to be used with a tractor.

First the seats were removed from the implement, but in many cases the levers to control the machine were located near the old seat area, which wasn’t readily reachable from the tractor. Farmers soon changed to tractor machinery, which was made to be controlled from the tractor.

Hydraulic controls and power-take-off wasn’t common, so the farmer still needed big muscles to raise and lower plows and cultivators. I remember a cultivator on a JD H. It had a long lever on the right side, which raised and lowered the cultivator.

To raise the cultivator at the end of the field, I as a young operator needed to stop the tractor, put both hands on the lever,

When you came to the place to lower the cultivator, you jerked the lever and stayed out of the way, since it went down fast. As you became more advanced in the use of the machine, you learned to drop the cultivator without stopping the tractor. This method was more efficient, but sometimes you cultivated out some corn using this method. Oh well, maybe the rows were too long before you fixed them.

Sidney A. “Sid” Lyon, age 95 of Grey Eagle, died Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, August 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. July 31, 2020: At approx. 15:00 hours, responded to the report of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of County Rd. 11 and County Rd. 38. Upon arrival it wasdiscovered that, Edwin Fortune, of Brainerd, was traveling eastbound on Co. 38 when he ran the stop sign and collided with a vehicle that was traveling northbound on Co. 11. Fortune had unknown injuries from the crash.

Dawn L. Golombecki

Dawn L. Golombecki, 63 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Saturday, August 1, 2020 at her home in Swanville, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 7, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial will take place in the St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 10-11 A.M. on Friday, August 7, 2020 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Dawn was born on August 31, 1956 in Little Falls, MN to the late Maurice and Johnita (Conen) Dickson. She grew up in Little Falls, MN where she attended school and graduated from Little Falls Community High School. Dawn was united in marriage to Randy Golombecki on March 5, 1982 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, MN. She was employed as a PARA at Swanville Area Schools for several years which inspired her to go back to school to earn her degree as a special education teacher. Dawn enrolled at St. Cloud State University where she received her bachelor’s degree and later received her Master’s Degree from St. Catherine’s University in St. Paul, MN. She began working for the St. Cloud School District and later transferred to Lincoln Elementary in Little Falls, MN where she retired from.

Dawn enjoyed traveling, scrap-booking, card making and was a lifelong camper. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and thought the world of her many grandchildren. Dawn was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Dawn is survived by husband, Randy Golombecki of Swanville, MN; children, Sherry (Jeff) Kappauf of Hinkley, MN and Bud (Jenna) Golombecki of Swanville, MN; siblings, Dennis (Sandy) Dickson, Debbie (Duane) Matthews, Diane (Phil) Solem and Denise Dickson; grandchildren, Marissa (John), Katelyn (Ty), Elijah, Laynamae, Tao, Nevaeh, Jolie, Ellianna, Sadie, Macie, Izabella, Adela, Katalina, Bria, Kyla, and Alexa; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Dawn was preceded in death by her parents, Johnita and Maurice “Bud” Dickson.

Diane S. Lange, age 73 of Upsala, passed away on July 31, 2020 after months of struggling with health issues and time spent on hospice. Her last day was spent with her kids and grandkids.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala with Rev. David Grundman officiating. Inurnment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thursday morning at the church.

Diane Sharon Julkowski was born November 23, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bernard and Vivian (Ohlson) Julkowski. She grew up in Columbia Heights where she enjoyed going to different lakes to swim, going downtown Minneapolis on the bus with friends and eating with chopsticks at the Nankin Café, and loved going to the cabin and to Minnesota Twins games with her family and friends. Diane graduated from Columbia Heights High School in 1965 and continued her education at St. Cloud State where she studied marketing.

She met Joe Lange at one of the Upsala groups gatherings at Cedar Lake. The couple married on May 10, 1969 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. They lived in Fridley for two years before moving to Upsala.

Diane was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala where she worked for several years. Family was the most important aspect of Diane’s life. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She rarely missed an Upsala Blue Jays amateur baseball game.

Diane enjoyed baking and was known for her “Grandma Buns.” She enjoyed taking an occasional trip to the casino, especially when she’d win, and loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Kerri (Kurt) Timm of Buffalo and B.J. (Nina) Lange of Upsala; four grandchildren, Halle, Macie, Bradon, and Makena; brother, Gary (Doreen) Julkowski of Coon Rapids; and sister, Holly (Troy) Willert of Wahkon.

Diane was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Lange, Jr.; parents; and daughter, Jodi Lange.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Herman K. Nietfeld

Herman K. Nietfeld, age 82 of Greenwald, died peacefully on July 31, 2020 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Vi s i t a t i o n was held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. In an effort to best support current guidelines established during this global pandemic, the family has arranged for a private service to occur at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. We thank you for your understanding as we seek to do our part in protecting the vulnerable among us during these difficult times.

Herman Kenneth Nietfeld was born September 2, 1937 in Melrose to Arnold H. and Catherine (Folmer) Nietfeld. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1956. Herman lived and worked on the family farm outside of Greenwald until February 2019 when he moved into Park View in Melrose. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

Herman loved to speak German, truly enjoyed farming, and also had a sweet tooth. He enjoyed planes and trains, reading books, especially about history and science, helping out at Park View, and enjoyed watching his shows on R.F.D. TV. Survivors include his brother, Arnold C. (Alma) Nietfeld of Greenwald; nieces and nephews, Jane (Terry) Miller of Carver, Dale (Sarah) Nietfeld of Lakeville, Lisa Nietfeld of Plano, Texas, Lynn (Kevin) Cooper of Oak Park, Illinois, and Karl (Elizabeth Deutscher) Nietfeld of Melrose; seven grandnieces and one grandnephew.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

July 28, 2020: Deputy Matt Mayers stopped a car for speeding, 82 mph in the 70 mph zone on Interstate 94 near Melrose.

Deputy Mayers walked up to the car to speak with the driver and saw a plastic baggie with a green leafy substance in it. He asked the driver if it was marijuana and he said, no, it was K2. A later search of the car turned up several more bags of K2. If you aren’t familiar with the K2, it’s a synthetic form of marijuana.

Nyandibo under went field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was also given a DMT test resulting in .08. He was identified as Fahat Nyandibo, 28, of Morris. This DWI arrest resulted in a felony level charge due to Nyandibo’s previous record. Additionally, he did not posses a valid driver’s license because of those prior DWI related convictions. Nyandibo was brought to the Stearns County Jail, booked and held on the felony DWI charge and Driving After Cancellation-Inimical to Public Safety.

July 30, 2020: On Thursday evening, Deputy Zach Milne responded to a theft call.

Hemker Zoo staff called to report the theft of a parakeet from the bird shelter area. The theft occurred an hour before the call. Staff had information on who the party may be and Deputy Milne made contact with that person. There was some back and forth with the person before they finally admitted to taking the parakeet. Deputy Milne informed

Burnhamville Township June 30, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held June 30, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of May 26, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Muellner and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about planning and zoning, which the board saw no problem with, election judging information, CARES funding and taxes received.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5928 through 5942: Rev. $2,391.62; R & B $24,220.67; Fire $8,816.00. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

With the primary coming up on August 11, 2020 Sup. Johnson made a motion to appoint these as election judges pending completion of training: Bonnie Alsleben, Brenda Schwanke, Chuck Macy, Shirley Hulinsky, Pam Throener, Mike Holmgren, Nancy Hillman. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the township has asked Hormel to help pay for the cost of dust control of spraying Fitz Road. Hormel has agreed to pay the contractor directly.

331st Ave. needs frost boils fixed before dust control can be sprayed. The supervisors divided up the township to do weed inspections soon. The contractor for mowing ditches said the mower broke down. He will resume once repaired.

A resident on Dutchman Drive again asked for the

fire department in that area to be switched. The board told him it is up to the county and state to approve and change the computer system. He was told to take his petition to the county.

There was discussion on gravel for access permits; the board agreed to only put gravel on one side of lake lots and the owner will be responsible for the other side.

Two access permits were reviewed and approved on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and a second by Sup. Johnson.

Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $139,880.08.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Muellner seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

On roll call members in attendance: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Lana Bartells (via phone), Crystal Benson, Dennis Westrich, and Brian Lange.

Highway 28 closes, detours for bridge work west of Sauk Centre August 17

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda with the additions of the brush in Uptown Alley and City Park Calendar, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Economic Development: Robert Harris has taken a different job outside of CEDA; our new associate is Maddy Schwartz.

Fire Department Report: The Upsala Fire Department raffle is September 12, please be sure to buy a ticket.

Flensburg Fire Department received the extra turnout gear washing machine from the UFD. First Response Team: Doucette reviewed the First Response Team’s minutes.

The LUCAS machine will be here soon.

The team will be hosting a wilderness search and rescue through Central Lakes College on Sept. 26 at Nick Johnson and Dannielle Haus’s place.

The Upsala First Response Team’s raffle is October 4; please purchase a ticket for a good cause.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels, and he stated discharging is done.

The department started putting rip rap rock around the sewer pond, installed hand sanitizers in the public buildings, and finished edging the curbs and sidewalks in town.

Westrich stated the Uptown Alley has hanging branches that are starting to become in the way of the delivery trucks, and the brush also needs to be removed from the right-of-way.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the July calendar and reminded everyone that the last day to file for candidacy for City Office is Tuesday, August 11 at 5:00 p.m.

Planning Commission: Lange reported that the commissioners walked through portions of the zoning ordinance. Discussed the lot split for Sheri and Steve Johnson and reviewed and approved the TIF district plan.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held. The Rec Building will be open as of now. Johnson is getting a quote to clean the entire building by Service Master.

7:31 p.m. Public Hearing TIF #5 Mayor Johnson recessed the regular city council meeting and opened the public hearing at 7:31 p.m.; a hearing on the proposed TIF district #5 located to the west of the townhomes.

Jason Murray with David Drown’s office explained the reasoning for the new district.

No comments were heard.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council meeting back to order at 7:34 p.m.

Motorists who travel on Highway 28 west of Sauk Centre will encounter a bridge closure and detour on Monday, August 17, as crews begin to replace the double box culvert bridge over Hoboken Creek.

Highway 28 will close five miles between the northwest junction of Stearns County Road 183 and Highway 71 in Sauk Centre through September 18.

The detour uses Stearns County Road 183, County Road 184, County Road 72/ Beltline Road, 12th Street and Highway 71 back to Highway 28 in Sauk Centre. The detour adds three miles to motorists’ trip.

There will be a full closure at the bridge between 435th Avenue/County Road 18

and 425th Avenue. The Highway is open to local traffic west and east of the closed work area.

The $868,000 project will provide a new double box culvert and improved drainage to users for years to come.

Slow down and use caution in work zones. Motorists should watch for workers, traffic control and equipment. The fine for a speed violation in a work zone is $300.

Lange moved to adopt resolution 8-3-2020-1 approving the modification of Municipal Development District #2, approving the modification of the Development Program relating thereto; the establishment of TIF #5 within Municipal Development District #2 and adopting the TIF plan relating thereto, 2nd by Westrich. Lange moved to move the regularly schedule City Council Meeting in September from Monday, September 7 to Tuesday, September 8 due to Labor Day landing on the first Monday of the month, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Sourcewell COVID Grant: Benson moved to approve resolution 8-3-2020-2 accepting a grant of $1067.80 for the purchase of hand sanitizing stations for COVID relief, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

CARES act Dollars: Lange moved to accept the list of items presented to be paid with CARES act dollars, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Approve COVID Expenditures: Lange moved to create a committee consisting of Benson, Bartells and Stevens to prioritize the COVID Cares act dollars and approve expenditures, 2nd by Westich. Motion carried unanimously.

City Park Calendar: Benson suggested having a calendar for events happening at the City’s park. Stevens will post on the City’s website calendar to who are having events in the park. Please notify Michelle at City Hall with your events. The park will still be available to the public during any events.

Cattle Found: Aug. 2, 2020: At approx. 7:30 AM the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to a hazard call near the Community Country Church in Holdingford.

A passerby saw three cattle on the lawn of the church and believed they could become a hazard to traffic on Co. Rd. 17.

The deputy located the cattle upon arrival and was able to move the cattle to a nearby farm with the help of local residents. Residents had checked around the area and were unable to determine where the cattle came from. The owner of the farm was able to make accommodations for the cattle and advised he would keep them safe for the time being. The cattle are described as three bulls being a mixture of tan, brown, and white in color with short horns.

Dear Motor Medics, I am in love with my 1998 Isuzu truck but the air conditioning has gone out. I have had the truck into a couple shops over the past two years but they both say that the hose I need is no longer available. At this point I either need to fix it or sell it because the air is out. I have health concerns that do not allow me to go without the air. Is there a way to get parts no longer made? I am not ready to give her up just yet.

-Shianne in Montgomery, Alabama We service and repair a large number of air conditioning systems in our own shop every year. We occasionally run into a parts availability problem on one and we must start looking. Often a parts house will have one in old stock and a dealership can do a search to locate one, but if not, sometimes one can be made. We often take the ends from the existing hose on the vehicle and replace the rubber component of it then we are able to evacuate and recharge the system. If one hose has failed and the system has been discharged this long, you will also need a receiver drier/accumulator. At the age of the truck it would also be a good idea to check the other hoses and replace them if they are showing any signs of wear. Good luck with your repairs.

It makes a click when I turn to the left or right while moving and a loud pop when I am stopped, and I turn all the way to the right. It does not pop when I return the wheel to the center again. The noise when you swerve that sounds like a fan is likely a wheel bearing and that can be replaced as a complete unit without too much trouble. While they are in there, they will want to look at the axle shafts. Those shafts can make a clicking sound when moving and turning due to a failed joint. As for the popping sound when turning to the right, you need to get that checked right away. This could be a safety issue. One possibility would be a ball joint that is failing but it could be any number of components in the front end.

All of the steering and suspensions components are safety issues if they wear so have a shop inspect the front end for any failed parts.
