There’s no telling where initiative will take you -By Harvey Mackay Two sons worked for their father on the family’s farm. The younger brother had for some years been given more responsibility and reward, and one day the older brother asked his father to explain why.

The father said, “First, go to the Kelly’s farm and see if they have any chickens for sale. We need to add to our stock.”

The brother soon returned with the answer, “Yes they have five chickens they can sell to us.”

That father then said, “Good, please ask them the price.”

The son returned with the answer, “The chickens are $10 each.”

The father said, “Good, now ask if they can deliver the chickens tomorrow.”

And the son returned with the answer, “Yes, they can deliver them tomorrow.”

The father asked the older brother to wait and listen, and then called to the younger brother in a nearby field, “Go to the Davidson’s Farm and see if they have any chickens for sale.

We need to add to our stock.”

The younger brother soon returned with the answer, “Yes, they have five chickens for $10 each, or ten for $8 each and they can deliver them tomorrow. I asked them to deliver the five unless they heard otherwise from us in the next hour. And I agreed that if we want the extra five chickens we could buy them for $6 each.”

The father turned to the older son, who nodded his head in appreciation. He now realized why his brother was given more responsibility and reward.

The younger son showed responsibility, anticipation and negotiation skills. Bottom line, he showed initiative.

Top business leaders share a common trait:

initiative. It is also one of the top attributes that employers look for. Words like self-starter and self-motivated are key in resumes.

Yet initiative is something they don’t teach you in business school. As my friend, the late Jim Rohn said: “Formal education will make you a living. Self-education will make you a fortune.”

Learning to take initiative pays off in many ways. The first step is to do more than what is expected of you, as demonstrated by the younger brother. He anticipated his father’s questions and acted upon them. He was prepared.

Confidence is also a significant part of initiative. But confidence, like initiative, doesn’t come naturally to most people. Even the most successful people have struggled with confidence in their careers.

The good news is that you can develop confidence, just like any muscle or character trait, if you’re willing to work hard. Set small goals to build your confidence toward achieving larger goals.

Confidence enables you to be proactive and inspire others to perform to the best of their abilities, without the fear of failure holding them back. You have to think like a winner.

Another aid in developing initiative is to create a team mindset. Unity consistently produces greater results than individual endeavors. Teamwork divides the effort and multiplies the effect. The boat won’t go if we all don’t row, so motivate your team members to do their very best.

Actively solicit feedback. The natural instinct for most people is to be defensive, but it’s essential to learn to love feedback.

Everyone can learn something from others who

have more experience. Rather than viewing feedback as judgment, consider looking at it as an opportunity to grow, learn and acquire a new skill. Be grateful for the suggestions.

It also never hurts to have a positive attitude. Thinking positive has no negative.

Finally, share ideas for improvement. If I give you a dollar and you give me a dollar, we each have a dollar. But if I give you an idea and you give me an idea, we each have two ideas.

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle. Everyone benefits from sharing ideas with others.

The 2016 movie “Hidden Figures” told the compelling story of Dorothy Vaughan, a Black female mathematician who worked as a “human computer” for NASA during the 1960s.

When NASA installed its first IBM mainframe computer, Dorothy feared she and her team would soon become redundant, but anticipated NASA’s need for a programming team. She taught herself the FORTRAN programming language, then taught it to her team, who became NASA’s programming team.

One of my favorite aphorisms goes like this: Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

Mackay’s Moral: Initiative is finishitive.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cars and Roads

When the 1900’s arrived, so did cars. The US didn’t have any idea what kind of impact automobiles would have on the physical layout of our country.

First, there really was no adequate areas for the cars to travel.

Prior to cars, the “highway system” was primarily made up of trails made by horse and wagon.

These trails were not maintained by any local authority. If any maintenance was done, it was done by a local landowner or trail user that was convinced by his neighbors to cut up the tree that was blocking the road or maybe put a wagon load of fill in a low area. The trails went around swamps, hills, trees and possibly farmers fields. I’ve been told that sometimes the trail crossed someone’s yard if it caused the trip to be shorter.

The horse and wagon trails primarily consisted of a pair of wagon tracks with some horse tracks in the middle. But now along came the automobile.

The early cars had a wheelbase that was similar to the wagon tracks. The distance from the ground to the axles gave the early cars about three times more clearance from the ground than today’s cars, making them better able to move on the early trails. They could travel on these trails, but it was a very jarring and exciting experience.

tires of today, they were also much narrower.

The taller tires were not built for a smooth ride, but they were more practical for early use.

The early trails were also not plowed by a snowplow, thereby frequently making them impassible through certain areas. It was common to leave the trail and go to an area with less snow to avoid getting stuck. Those with a coupe often removed the trunk door and installed a box which being similar to a pickup could be used to haul feed sacks, etc.

This was helpful in the winter, since weight could be added to the rear of the car making it a better snow machine, which had heavy weight in the back over the rear wheel drive, plus chains and the narrow tires for better traction. Both the horses and wagons and the early cars occasionally drove across farmers fields without the land owner threatening them with arrest for trespassing. Not a common occurrence today.

As the roads became better, the auto manufacturers reduced the height of tires and made them wider. This improved the ride but didn’t necessarily make them have better traction in the winter. Today’s hard surfaced roads are quite treacherous when coated with ice. It’s like driving on ice, but having the ice be slanted by the road surface. Those old tires were better in snow, but we prefer the new tires

One reason used by early customers for the purchase of an automobile was that unlike horses, one didn’t feed the car when it was not being used. This was not totally true, since the horses always started, they were needed to clean the barn, they ate lousy hay that you didn’t feed to the cows and they were better able to go through deep snow.

Robert A. Schmiesing

Robert A. “Bob” Schmiesing, age 93 of Sauk Centre died peacefully on August 1, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, August 6 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m.

Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Robert Aloys Schmiesing was born on June 8, 1928, in Meire Grove, MN, to Herman and Hilda (Marthaler) Schmiesing. He lived in rural Meire Grove with his family until 1937. His family moved frequently until 1942 when they settled on a farm eight miles west of Sauk Centre. Bob farmed with his parents until their passing, working tirelessly and selflessly to help his parents earn a successful living and provide for their family.

In 1942, Bob graduated from 8th grade at Country School District 82 and later earned a GED diploma from Sauk Centre High School. On October 17, 1955, Bob married Margaret (Margie) Ann Jennissen in Padua, MN. They were blessed with five children, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild.

Bob clerked for Ashley Township for 33 years, belonged to the Knights of Columbus for 63 years, and was a life-time member of Our Lady of the Angels Church where he also served as an usher. In 1989, Bob and Margie moved across the highway and continued to help their son, Mike, on the family farm. In 2002, they retired from farming and moved to Sauk Centre. Throughout his life, Bob loved traveling with Margie and spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing cards, gambling, dancing, fishing, biking, and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, his children: Debbie (Cyril) Felling, Mike Schmiesing (Brenda Kunz Schmiesing), Nancy (Tony) Schleicher, Dianne Schmiesing (Victor Zupanc), and Ginny Schmiesing (Dan McClurg); his grandchildren: Jennifer (Pete) Nelson, Melissa (Jamie) Kleinschmidt, Amy Schmiesing (Cristopher Hermosilla), Jason (Marie) Felling, Trisha (Patrick) Tinney, Danielle (Cole) Harden,

throughout his life, but he is most known for his carpentry skills. Joe built and remodeled many custom-built homes in the area, and his attention to detail and the pride he took in his work showed on all of his projects. Joe was an avid deer and elk hunter, taking many hunting trips around the United States. He also enjoyed fishing, ice fishing and restoring and wrenching on old vintage motorcycles. Joe’s passion for motorcycles brought him many close friends and he took numerous trips to Sturgis every year for the rally. He was a very outgoing and social person that loved to entertain people with his band that he fronted Spare Parts. Joe’s faith was very important to him as he was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, which brought him on several mission trips around the world to help build churches and schools. Joe was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

November 15, 1969 in Mohall, ND. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force Gene and Vickie moved to Swanville, MN. During this same time frame, Gene enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard where over time he achieved the rank of 1st Sg E8 from Company A 434th Main support battalion where he retired in 2000. Throughout his life in Minnesota Gene farmed and drove truck.

Driving for Gas Service for 20 years then Viking Express Freight to finally starting Epling Trucking where he leased out to and hauled for Linsmeier Trucking, retiring in 2010. After which he worked a few years part-time for the city of Swanville. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles and going on camping trips. Gene was also a very social person who loves spending time with his friends and family and especially his grandchildren, that he loved to tease and have fun with. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. In his last few years Gene and Vickie loved to travel south for the winter where they made very special friends.

The Patriots defeated Parkers 11-2. USA then went on to play Aitkin, Patriots took that game with a 4-1 win. It would come down to Patriots and Aitkin in the championship game. The Patriots took the title in a 6-5 nail biter. The Patriots now move on to the JR. Legion State Tournament which is held in Montevideo August 6th-8th. Losing a spouse, or a father, is tough at any age. The good news is your dad did a great job of planning to take care of your mom. He left her in fine shape money-wise, but yes, she needs long term care insurance and a good estate planner. You need to help your mom do everything possible to handle her situation wisely.

I usually suggest folks wait until age 60 to buy long-term care insurance, because the likelihood of filing a claim before then is very slim. In fact, about 95% of long-term care claims are filed for people over 70. That’s why, in most cases, it doesn’t make sense to get long-term care insurance earlier than age 60.

Insurance isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of thing, though. If someone has a family history of illness or other health issues at a younger age, they may need to get long-term care insurance earlier. But you shouldn’t buy longterm care coverage at a young age just because you’re paranoid of what might happen, or because you think you’ll save money. That’s just not true.

In the event your mom becomes unable to take care of herself at some point, long-term care insurance would be an absolute necessity.

The cost of nursing home care these days is astronomical. Again, your mom is in a great place financially, but a prolonged stay in a nursing home somewhere down the road could eat up her nest egg in a hurry.

Long-term care insurance is a wise part of any good asset management plan.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2003 Chevy Venture and I keep getting moisture on the driver’s side floor. I don’t know where it’s coming from. I thought if you could lead me in the right direction maybe it wouldn’t be so costly. I read your column in the Vandalia leader from Vandalia Mo. -Bert in Curryville, Missouri Dear Bert, To find water leaks it takes some time.

It could be as simple as a clogged AC system evaporator drain which requires cleaning the drain under the car in a shop. Here is one way we try to locate other water leaks in cars. Begin by mixing up some sudsy dish soap in a bucket. Next start the car and turn the blower to the vent position and set the blower on high. Close the windows then pour the mixture around any spot that is joined together like window trim, door seals, etc. If you see bubbles coming out, then you know you have a leak. Bubbles around door handles are normal but door seals are not. Once you find the leak it will have to be addressed according to where it is. If your vehicle has a sunroof you will want to make sure the drains for the roof are clear of obstructions. The drains are located close to the front edge of the door and also on the rear edge of the doors and run from the roof to under the car.

There is a one-time cost involved in the wheels though but sometimes less expensive alternatives can be found for the winter months. You may even go with some fancy aftermarket units for summer. For driving on ice and snow many manufactures offer a specialized tire that is purpose made and is best used just in the winter months as they wear faster on dry pavement. Ask your tire dealer which is best for you.

Dustin Olmschenk

Dustin Michael Olmschenk passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021 at the age of 39, shortly after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive liver cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his memory by living their lives fully and courageously, just

as he did.

Dustin was born July 20, 1982, the second eldest child to Michael and Deborah Olmschenk. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2001 and completed a degree in agricultural systems management at NDSU in 2005. Dustin returned home and fulfilled his dream of becoming the fourth generation Olmschenk homestead farmer. He dedicated many hard-working years taking impeccable care of the family farm.

In addition to being a passionate farmer, Dustin also enjoyed time with family, scuba diving, golfing, fishing, and hunting. He always looked for opportunities to help others and was a proud member of St. Martin Fire & Rescue. Those closest to Dustin knew that he was one of the most thoughtful, kind, and genuine souls that one could hope to surround themselves with. He will be remembered for

his generous spirit and gentle nature.

Dustin is survived by his parents Mike and Deb, sister Sarah (Ryan), brothers Westley (Amy) and Jesse (Lori), grandmother Esther Steinemann, eight nieces and nephews, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He is preceded in death by grandparents Herb and Rose Olmschenk, Henry Steinemann, and uncle Fred Olmschenk.

In lieu of gifts, the family would prefer donations to St. Martin Fire & Rescue. A visitation, celebrating the life of Dustin, will be held Friday, August 6th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

There will be sharing of memories at 7 p.m.

Friday evening. A private burial will follow on Saturday at St. Martin Cemetery.

Dustin will be deeply loved forever and never be forgotten. We will keep his spirit alive by living passionately, being patient and kind, slow to judge, and cherishing every moment with those we love.

As I write this article, we are preparing for the second day of VBS at Swanville Bible church. I am staring at my computer wondering how to encourage those who might read this article. As I stare, I notice the password written on tape, stuck to my computer, so that anyone can use it for the Power Point or whatever else is needed during VBS. It got me thinking. I use a password to protect my computer…so what about my soul; What protects that?

Do I have a password, to protect my heart? I know what Jeremiah 17:9 says “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” But what can protect my heart from intruders, or more specific, who can protect my heart from Satan? Here is a bit of good news for anyone who reads this. You might be stressed out today from just life, or you might even be considering suicide, or leaving your spouse because things just aren’t working out.

Jesus has a plan to help us. Jesus came to give us hope; and in a hopeless society, full of anxiety, how do we get hope and peace in our storm. Before Jesus left this world, He was comforting His disciples by telling them that He is going to go and prepare a place for them. When they were confused about where He was going, He said in John 14:6 “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Put your hope and trust in the only One who gives peace and rest, Jesus Christ.
