You don’t have to be a shark to succeed -By Harvey Mackay

While I was perusing the business section in a bookstore recently, I was immediately attracted to one with “Shark” in the title. I am referring to Robert Herjavec’s new book – “You Don’t Have To Be A Shark: Creating Your Own Success.”

Robert is one of the stars of the popular TV show “Shark Tank.”

As the author of the book “Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” I take great delight in anyone who reintroduces sharks back into our

lexicon. I originally wrote “Swim With the Sharks” back in 1988 and then updated it with new material in 2005.

Robert has wonderful advice in his book. I rather enjoyed reading it because I couldn’t help but notice some of the similarities in our ways of thinking. I highly recommend it for folks from all walks of life.

Robert says that “A goal without a timeline is just a dream.” I phrase it a little differently: “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” Goals must be measurable, identifiable, attainable, specific and in writing. Winners set and achieve goals; losers make excuses. Goals give you more than a reason to get up in the morning; they are an incentive to keep you going all day.

Robert also notes that “Sales are the beginning of everything that business strives to achieve.” I am firm in my belief: There are no jobs unless someone brings the business through the front door. Many people think “sales” is a negative word, but we have no jobs without sales. Sales is the lifeblood of any business.

Chapter Two of Robert’s book is titled “Everyone is selling somebody

something.” My version: “Everyone is in sales.” Why? Because from the moment we get up in the morning until we go to bed, what are we doing all day?

We are selling ideas, communicating, negotiating, persuading and influencing.

Chapter 4 is all about the art of selling. Robert makes the point that “the story does not end with a sale.” The way I put it is, “The sale begins when the customer says yes.” In other words, you have to service the account and make sure that you get the reorder. There are plenty of sharks out there working to take your business.

Robert is absolutely correct when he says “Sales people enjoy the company of people.” I like to say, “You must be a people person,” because people buy from other people because of likeability, chemistry and people skills.

And this piece of his advice is solid gold: “Sales people spend more time listening than talking.” I constantly lecture, “Many people hear, but very few actually listen.” You don’t learn anything if you are doing all the talking.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Snakes

M

o s t of us are uncomfortable when a snake appears.

That uncomfortable feeling may be as mild as a slight surprise, a feeling of your hair rising, a quickening of your heart beat or actual jumping to avoid contact with the snake.

We in central Minnesota, have a great advantage over other areas in the US. Our snakes are not known to have a poisonous bite. If we are bitten by a snake, we could get an infection, which is not from a poisonous bite, but from the rather dirty mouth of the snake.

We primarily have three kinds of snakes in this area. The most common snake is the garter snake. That species is now in a greatly reduced population cycle. The main food of the garter snake is frogs and our current frog population is also greatly reduced. Their diet will vary to include earthworms crawling around on a hard surface during and after a rain. When grain shocks were common in the field, there were often garter snakes in the bundles as they were picked up. They were there to eat baby mice, which were in almost every

shock. I guess baby mice were on their diet too.

The next snake in our area is the brown snake. It is not often observed anymore, however they were also frequently residents of the grain shocks. The 15 inch snake was thought by my ancestors 125 years ago to be poisonous. They were called copper snakes and were eliminated as quickly and safely as possible. An occurrence that I remember was pulling a load up to the thrashing machine to be unloaded into the thrashing machine. I was a little bit early, since my grandfather and his brother were just beginning to unload their load into the thrashing machine.

They suddenly exited the load. One jumped off of the front and the other off the back. When I ran over to see what was wrong, (thinking there was a bees nest in the load) I was told that there was a copper snake in the load and they weren’t going back up there. The remembrance of those two old guys scooting off of the load still makes me chuckle. The unfinished load was pulled away from the machine and my dad later unloaded it at the end of the day.

He didn’t get bit.

The last snake common in this area is the Western Hognose Snake. About 50 years ago these snakes were quite common. They look like a Diamondback and they show a defensive pose by raising the front part of their bodies,

often learn something. Being a good listener can make or break a career.

Robert makes the point that, “Good sales people learn everything possible about buyers and their interests…. And good sales people work at building relationships.” The most important lesson in “Swim With The Sharks” is “People don’t care how much you know about them, once they realize how much you care about them.” This describes my Mackay 66 Customer Profile, which is the cornerstone of all my speeches.

You have to learn as much about your customers and suppliers as you possibly can, because you can’t talk about business all the time. You have to build those relationships and take it from a business level to a personal level. Knowing something about your customer is just as important as knowing everything about your product.

Salespeople, Robert says, “visualize their success.” So true. I believe that visualization is one of the most powerful means of achieving personal goals. The ability to project is a common trait among all great athletes and business people. They have future vision. Success is no surprise to visionary people. They know what they want, determine a plan

to achieve it and expect positive results.

Visualization allows you to see your ideal tomorrow. It gives you a real idea of what is possible, if only you want it bad enough.

Take it from one who has spent a career swimming with sharks: Robert Herjavec’s advice will keep you from becoming shark bait.

Family members share their 100-year history of refreshing products Jason Bernick and Ruth Larson will present “The Bernick Companies: The First Century” at the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club on Wednesday, August 10. It’s a story about intriguing characters, hard work, and great success. The program begins at 9 a.m.

The company had humble beginnings. Bernick and Larson of the Bernick Companies will share anecdotes from the days when Charles and Elizabeth Bernick purchased Granite City Bottling Works in 1916 and developed the business. Production equipment was minimal. It included a bottle filling and capping machine, a washer and a few hundred wooden cases to haul products.

The company certainly faced some challenges, as the speakers will discuss how Prohibition, the Great Depression, and war years influenced their various products. Larson also will cover the period of when Francis “Snooky” Bernick took the helm. She will share his fascinating stories and his vision for expansion. Join us to hear how their success and community giving has shaped Central Minnesota and other communities.

Snakes create a fear or surprise reaction in most of us. Some reactions are as a result of centuries of scary confrontations with snakes and others come from our mothers teaching us to avoid snakes. Whichever applies, they do cause us to take a fast second look when they suddenly appear.

The old timers said that if one would inhale the air released by the hissing sound, you would become very sick. The old timers all had a story of a friend of friend who had a distant relative that became sick from the Blowsnake fumes. Hmmm.

There was a story about 60 years ago which involved a python that had escaped from the circus and was terrorizing the local area. It supposedly killed and ate chickens, small calves and was a threat to small children.

Mothers were very concerned about their children’s safety while walking to their neighbor’s homes to play. It was said that there were snake tracks going across a plowed field. The threat began to unravel when the tracks in the plowed

Obituaries Robert T. “Bob” Johnson F u n e r a l Services were held at 11 am, Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at American Lutheran Church, Long Prairie for Robert T. “Bob” Johnson, age 76, of Alexandria, formerly of Burtrum, who passed away on Friday, July 29th at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. Rev. Bill Bakewicz officiated and burial will be in Moses Dane Cemetery, Burtrum at a later date. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home – Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.

Robert Theodore Johnson was born on April 14, 1940 near Burtrum. He grew up and attended elementary school in Burtrum and graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1958. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army where he was also a member of the Army basketball team. Bob then attended and graduated

Elaine Harriet Luebke Elaine Harriet Luebke was born March 23, 1936 in Grey Eagle, MN, the daughter of Alfred and Lorraine (Nunn) Luebke. Elaine grew up on her parent’s farm near Grey Eagle and graduated from Grey Eagle High School. She was a basketball cheerleader and loved cheering on her team. In 1953 she was joined in marriage to Lowell Sell and was blessed with two children, John and Cindy. They made their home in Paynesville, MN. Following Lowell’s death in 1960 Elaine moved her family to Sauk Rapids, MN. She met Lewis Burg and the two were joined in marriage in 1972. Elaine was blessed with two more children, Bridget and Brad.

Elaine’s family lived in St. Cloud, MN for a short time before moving to Alexandria, MN. She worked at the Herberger’s store in downtown Alexandria and continued with them at the Viking Plaza mall. She retired from Herberger’s in the early 2000’s due to health concerns. Elaine loved keeping busy doing jigsaw puzzles on her coffee table and playing word games on her computer. As her hearing failed her the computer became very important in

He began working for the United States Treasury, living in Omaha, Nebraska, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and finally permanently in Coon Rapids. In 1997, he and Donna moved to Big Swan Lake, where they made their home until moving to Alexandria in 2013. They spent several winters in Arizona.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Donna, Alexandria; son, Robb (Shameza) Johnson, Little Falls; daughter, Laura (Bradley) Mrzlak, Wheaton, MN; siblings, Janice (Dale) VanZee, Melrose; Shirley (Jim Hendrickson) Loxterkamp, Remer; Gary (Debbie) Johnson, Little Falls; Allen (Sandra) Johnson, Pillsbury; and James (Linda) Johnson, Lindstrom, MN; seven grandchildren, Salman, Mellisa, Brandon, Stephen, Sophia, Evelyn, and Marguerite.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Calvin and William, and sister Gloria Barthel.

Casket bearers were Salman Johnson, Stephen Mrzlak, Robb Johnson, Brandon Johnson, Mellisa Johnson, and Sophia Mrzlak.

Elaine loved her country and promised never to forget; ever since the 9/11 attack she drove though Alexandria with two American flags attached to her car. Elaine was also a former member of the Eastern Star.

On Tuesday, July 12, 2016 Elaine died at the age of eighty years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her two husbands, Lowell Sell and Lewis Burg.

A memorial service will be held at 1 PM Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Julie Moen will be the officiant. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Alexandria. Honorary pallbearers include Christina Sell, Ashley Hvezda, Brandon Hvezda, Austin Burg, Ty Burg, Keeley Burg and Clayton Lightner.

Randolph E. “Randy” Schwinghammer Randolph E. “Randy” Schwinghammer, age 63 of Grey Eagle, died suddenly on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, August 4 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Randolph Eugene Schwinghammer was born December 23, 1952 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Val and Estelle (Thelen) Schwinghammer.

Randy graduated from Albany High School in 1971 and pursued his life adventure. Randy rode his motorcycle to Oregon and lived there for two years. He returned to the area and married Anita Salzl on May 10, 1975 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. They have been inseparable ever since. The couple lived in Albany and purchased a farm in 1975 and moved southeast of Grey Eagle in 1976. This is where they established their dairy farm and have since raised their family.

Randy had many interests. He loved farming, hunting, especially elk hunting with his son in Colorado, fishing, kayaking, sailing, cross country skiing, canoeing, riding his Harley, and scuba diving. Most recently, Randy was in the

Dan Walz officiated and a private family burial will be held at a later date. Jill passed away with family at her side at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Cloud.

process of getting his pilot’s license to fly the skies. Randy’s passion, however, was music. He played guitar and belonged to the Kodiak Band for 32 years. He truly loved watching people enjoy the music he was playing. He loved spending time with his family and his friends, especially his grandchildren. They were so precious to him and were the love of his life. Randy will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Anita Schwinghammer of Grey Eagle; children, Amanda (Randy) Hartung of Freeport and Jeremiah (Nicole) Schwinghammer of Monument, Colorado; grandchildren, Trevin, Abraham, Ethan, and Marissa Hartung, and Layton Schwinghammer; parents, Val and Estelle Schwinghammer of Avon; brothers and sisters, Sherry Friedrichs of St. Louis Park, Judy (Mark) Gileczek of Bloomington, Connie Larson of Cedar, Jackie (Ed) Atkinson of Freeport; and Larry (Shelly) Schwinghammer of Albany; and many nieces and nephews.

Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents; father-in-law, Sylvester Salzl; and brother-in-law, John Ronallo.

Cross bearer will be Marissa Hartung, scripture bearer will be Ethan Hartung, and flower bearer will be Layton Schwinghammer. Lectors will be Sherry Friedrichs and Judy Gileczek and the petitions will be read by Jackie Atkinson. Gift bearers will be Rowen Salzl, Travis Atkinson, and Noah Salzl.

F u n e r a l Services were held Monday, August 1, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie for LaVonne A. Lackmann, age 80 of Long Prairie, who passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2016 at CentraCare Health Systems – Long Prairie. Rev. Noah Wehrspann officiated and burial followed at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Long Prairie.

LaVonne Ann Scheve was born March 23, 1936 in Long Prairie, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Isabelle (Hockemeyer) Scheve. She grew up and attended school in Long Prairie graduating from high school in 1953. She married Walter Lackmann on September 1, 1956 in Long Prairie. They made their home in Long Prairie. LaVonne worked

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Dorothy Thyen, age 95 of Farming, was held Friday, July 29th, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial followed in the St. Catherine’s Parish Cemetery in Farming.

Dorothy died on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at the St. Otto’s Care Home in Little Falls.

Dorothy was born December 22, 1920 in Nicollet, MN to Frank and Elizabeth (Schouviller) Zins. She married Richard Wesley “Wes” Williams in Seattle in 1942 while he was in the U.S. Navy.

They lived in South St. Paul. Wes died in 1959. Dorothy married Leo Thyen on Jan 30, 1960 in South St. Paul and moved to Cottage Grove. The couple moved to Farming in March of 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Farming.

She also volunteered at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home.

LaVonne was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Stitch-n-Prayer Quilting Group. She enjoyed quilting and sewing, bird watching, and fishing. She always thought of others first, putting their needs ahead of her own.

LaVonne is survived by her husband of almost 60 sixty years, Walter, Long Prairie, children, Sheryl (Dan) Karpinski, Sauk Rapids; Jerry, Browerville; and John, Long Prairie; three grandchildren, Micah, Amber, and Josh, and one greatgranddaughter, Mckenna.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Eugene Scheve, and sister Lois Anderson.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Joyce Cheever, Shakopee; Diane Williams, Brainerd, Donna (Jim) Gregory, Cottage Grove; Richard Williams, St. Paul; Julie Goudge, Bemidji; David Williams, Woodbury; Theresa (Mitch) Sanchez, Avon and Beth (Jamie) Thelen, Avon. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Magdelen Gronholz, Pillager; 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great Grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Wes Williams, her second husband, Leo Thyen; her sisters Elizabeth and Beatrice, her brother, Joseph Zins and three grandchildren.

Charles M. Wunderlich, 82 year old resident of Burtrum, MN passed away We d n e s d a y, July 27, 2016 surrounded by family at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Funeral service was held Monday, August 1, 2016 at Faith Community Church in Burtrum, MN with Rev. Terry Wardlaw officiating. Burial took place at the Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Charlie was born on June 26, 1934 in Garrison, MN to the late Earl and Vera Wunderlich. He grew up in Burtrum, MN and attended school through the 8th grade, and graduated from Grey Eagle High

Funding is part of Greater Minnesota program The city of Avon will receive funding from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to build a noise barrier along the north side of Interstate 94 from east of Chinook Avenue Southwest to Middle Spunk Lake.

Cost of the noise barrier, which will be approximately 3,400 feet long and 20 feet high, is approximately $1.5 million.

Most of the costs will be paid for with funds from MnDOT’s Greater Minnesota Stand-Alone Noise Barrier Program.

The city of Avon will contribute 10 percent of the cost.

Design work will begin next spring and construction will start in 2018, according to Claudia Dumont, project manager.

Thirty-six homes near the interstate will benefit from the project.

“This barrier will provide a noticeable level of noise reduction to those homes,” said Dumont. “Residents in Avon have had concerns about traffic noise for many years and tried unsuccessfully to get funding through another program that was not specifically targeted for noise barriers. The city is happy to have been selected.”

School. Charlie entered the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served on the U.S.S. New Destroyer (#818) until being honorably discharged in 1956. After his service, he returned to Burtrum and farmed until retiring in 1992. Charlie continued to live in Burtrum until he moved to Village View Apartments in 1999, then to St. Otto’s Care Center in 2011. Charlie was a dedicated farmer, always looking after others and would help anyone no matter what. He enjoyed spending time with family and he loved his lottery tickets.

He will be dearly missed by sons, Kevin (Danicia) Wunderlich of Burtrum, MN; and James Wunderlich of Burtrum, MN; brother, William (Julie) Wunderlich of Foley, MN; grandchildren, Cody, Jake, Dylan, Gage, Noah, Kacie, and Jeremiah; and many nieces and nephews.

UBA to host The Fabulous Armadillos

The Upsala Ballfield Association (UBA) will be hosting The Fabulous Armadillos on Friday, August 19 from 8:30-11:30 p.m. at the Upsala Rec. Building. This is a fundraiser for ball field improvements.

UBA was started in 2009 by a group of local people that were interested in getting additional softball and baseball fields in Upsala. With a shortage of fields, kids were going home without practice time. UBA is not just baseball, they are both baseball and softball.

Their first project was to build a JV/

Little League sized field. They acquired some land from the Upsala school and built a field. This was done with donations from many sources: Upsala Lions, MN Twins, some local large donations, some anonymous donations and a lot of fundraising and efforts of the group that started UBA along with hundreds of volunteer hours.

In 2013 they built a new backstop on the Varsity field, this is where the USA baseball high school team plays and also our Town Team, the Upsala Blue Jays. We also re-built the infield and built drainage around the infield. The next step for that field is a sprinkler system in the outfield and re-doing the turf.

All of our fields are open to any of our teams. They are not reserved for any one team, baseball plays on the softball field and the other fields can be set up for softball if necessary.

In 2014, Upsala hosted the Region Victory League Baseball Tournament.

All attendees were very excited to see our new facilities.

Going forward, we will be building a new dugout for the home team at Varsity field (currently the visitors have a brand new, big dugout, while the home team uses a smaller, older dugout). This new facility will include concessions and room for the press.

By Randy Pepin Saturday August 13 will be the tenth annual car show by the Upsala Community Cruisers. The show will be held in the Centra-Sota (feed store) parking lot beginning at noon and ending at 2:30. In addition to People’s Choice and Club’s Choice Awards we have four classes of cars: 1964 and older stock and custom, and 1965 and newer stock and custom.

This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the annual Upsala Historical Society gathering featuring food, historical site tours, and music. Profits from the car show will be donated to the Upsala Helping Hands Fund, a local humanitarian aid fund administered by local clergy.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m a recently retired widow, and my husband always took care of most of our finances.

We never had any debt, but after starting to learn a little bit about how money works, I’m worried that there may be too much of it invested in CDs (certificates of deposit). The total nest egg is a little over $1.5 million, with $300,000 of that in CDs. There’s also a $317,000 annuity, a 403(b) and around $900,000 in IRA mutual funds. I also have two homes and a new car that are paid for.

How do you think I should handle things going forward?

-Joan Dear Joan, I’m really sorry to hear about your husband, but you two did a fantastic job with your finances. You’re worth at least $1.5 million, and you have no debt. You’re set for life, but you’re wise to want to be careful.

The CDs give you some stability, but obviously they’re not earning much of anything. I think of them as money kicked up in a hammock — it’s not working for you. You both worked hard for that money, so personally I’d like to see it working hard for you now. If you’ve had good luck with a variable annuity, that’s fine. You’ve also had very good luck with your mutual fund investing. So, with all this money in different areas, you’re definitely diversified. It’s just a matter of wrapping your arms around it all and developing a deeper understanding of things going forward.

At this point, I would urge you to find an investment professional in your area with the heart of a teacher — someone who’s not trying to sell you stuff. You want to learn, Joan, and I’m really impressed by that. It’s a smart and necessary thing. Every time you see an investment person, whoever it

You guys are both 31 years old, and you’re going to be in great shape for retirement if you just keep doing what you’ve been doing. If I’m in your shoes, I’d go out and find the best car $22,000 can buy.

You’re doing all the right stuff.

Your kids can go to school debt-free, and you’re going to have the house paid off in no time. In short, you’re going to retire multi-millionaires at the rate you’re going — as long as you keep on keeping on!

Think about this, too. As a general trend, most people’s incomes go up throughout their lifetimes. That being the case, chances are you’re going to make and invest even more money in the years ahead. You and your wife could easily retire with $5 million to $10 million sitting there.

Sup. Berscheit call to order at 7 p.m. at the Burtrum Community Center the special hearing to discuss the replacement of the Pillsbury Bridge. Board Members present included Sups. Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson and Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Also in attendance included Loren Fellbaum and Wade Jackson from

Todd County Public works, Pete Sargerg designer from Widseth Smith Nolting, Eric Altena from DNR and several residents. Total attendance was 26.

Sup. Berscheit introduced Todd County Engineer Loren Fellbaum and turned the hearing over to him to lead the informational presentation.

dam in Todd County. It has severe spalling on the waterline and so has been determined deficient.

Todd County Public Works, MN DNR and hired engineers determined the best design will be a Concrete Beam Span Bridge with metal railing on the sides. The plans also included a “Stepped” Fish Ladder natural channel bottom and a Capped Sheet Pile Weir to control the lake water elevation. There are several very similar designed bridges in central and western Minnesota.

described natural fish habitats and other dams in the area before this lake that will deter invasive species. This project was too small to require an environmental impact study, but several agencies have reviewed the project for over three years before permits were issued including DNR, Todd Co. SWCD, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The water level will be controlled with new construction before anything is taken down and fish weir will be held in place with very large boulders to control water flow. The engineer was asked for better control of run off from bridge and road into lake.

One resident asked if the DNR will monitor the fish in Little Swan Lake more closely after these changes to see if it works.

This lake is monitored every six years already and the DNR feels these changes are not significant and any threat is considered so low it will not justify a new study every two years.

The new bridge will be 34 feet long and 30 feet wide at the bottom. With the wider dam area more volume of water may leave the lake but at a slower velocity with the fish ladder and capped sheet weir to encourage healthier environment for fish and normal flow downstream.

Specialists were available for additional discussion of concerns.

August 1, 2016 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Robert Maciej, Dennis Westrich, and Joan Olson. People present: Morrison County Record Reporter Sheila McCoy, Tom Opatz with Hilltop Health Center, Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners, and Clerk/ Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve the minutes for July 5, 2016 City Council Meeting, 2nd

by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Maciej moved to approve the agenda with the addition of the Borgstom Street sewer issue, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Presentations, Citizen Appeals: Tom Opatz, Hilltop Health Center, Watkins, MN, presented information on ab assisted living care center in Upsala. He discussed Exploring tax abatement, TIF, and grant money.

Olson moved to continue

working with Tom Opatz to develop a plan to create an assisted living unit in Upsala, 2nd by Maciej. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on the water and sewer levels.

Koopmeiners reported the chlorine regulator was leaking.

To repair the 20 year old regulator would cost approximately $600; a new regulator is approximately $1400. The Council directed Koopmeiners to purchase a new chlorine regulator.

Koopmeiners will be flushing water lines August 11th starting around 1:00 p.m. Stevens will put a notice in the newsletter.

Koopmeiners repaired the potholes.

Johnson Jet-Line is finished.

The sewer line cleaning and video report has not been submitted yet. SEH recommends paying the invoice once we do receive the report.

Fire Department Report: No report submitted.

Rescue Department: Westrich moved to accept the resignation of Brian Lange as a member of the Upsala First Responder Team, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried with Lange abstaining.

Mayor Rollie Johnson commended Lange on his years of unselfish dedication to the team as a member and as President.

City Office Report: Stevens presented the August calendar.

Stevens explained the welcome bags.

Planning Commission: No meeting.

UCDC: Beth Lange submitted the UCDC report.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Unfinished Business: Personnel Policy: Olson and Lange will bring back solid numbers to the next meeting concerning paid time off. The council will start the final policy at the beginning of the year.

Sewer Line on Borgstrom Street: A committee of Council member Westrich, Mayor Johnson, S.E.H engineer Scott Hedlund and Public Works Superintendent Frank Koopmeiners will meet with the three homeowners involved with the Borgstrom Street sewer issue. A tentative meeting with the homeowners is

set for Wednesday, August 10 at 2:00 p.m. to discuss easements and financial costs. Westrich will be contacting excavators to look at the project.

Initiative Foundation Donation: Olson moved to budget $360 to designate as donation money to the Initiative Foundation for 2017, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Election Judges: Lange moved to adopt resolution 8-116-1 appointing election judges for the 2016 state primary and general elections as follows: Head Judge MaryJane Chuba, Judges Viola Wuebkers, Christine Wuebkers, Diane Lange, Lan Bartells and Election Administrator Michelle Stevens, 2nd by Maciej. Motion carried unanimously.

Franchise Fees: Stevens discussed the uses for franchise fees to generate income for the city.

Set Budget Meeting: Olson moved to set the City budget meeting for Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., 2nd by Lange.

Motion carried unanimously.

Set Closed Meeting: Lange moved to set a closed meeting for Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 6:30 p.m., 2nd by Olson. The purpose of this meeting is to consider the purchase of real property for storage of public works equipment. Motion carried unanimously.

Move Regular City Council Meeting: Westrich moved to change the City Council meeting from Monday, September 5 (Labor Day) to Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., by Olson.

July 21, 2016: At 16:29 the Todd County Sheriffs Office responded to Big Birch Lake for an unresponsive male. Kevin Schulzetenberg, 52, from St. Joseph dove off on a pontoon to cool off and became unresponsive a short time later. Melrose Ambulance transported Kevin to the Sauk Centre Hospital where Life Link assisted. Grey Eagle Fire Department assisted on the call.

July 27, 2016: At 12:34 the Todd County Sheriffs Office received a car vs. deer report. Jennifer Shattuck, 40, of Swanville hit a deer on State 28. Minor damage was done to her vehicle and no injury was reported.

July 27, 2016: At 17:12 TCSO received a call of a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of County 10 and County 11 in Reynolds TWP sect 34. 29 year old Michael Ritter, city of Sauk Centre, was traveling eastbound on County 10 when he struck a northbound vehicle driven by 31 year old Jessica Roth from Salem Oregon. A 2008 Ford Escape driven by Michael and a 2005 Mini Cooper driven by Jessica both received sever damage as a result of the crash.

Michael was not injured and Jessica was transported to the Long Prairie Hospital to be treated for non life threatening injuries. Long Prairie Ambulance and the MN Department of Natural Resources assisted at the scene.

July 31, 2016: At 14:31 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Dallas Nelson. Nelson, who lives at 17848 County Road 10, stated that sometime between July 22nd and July 26th someone removed the window to his garage and stole 4 bottles of alcohol from his refrigerator. Anyone with any information on this incident or any other is encouraged to contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

What is fishing with you, my child, really all about?

Is it how many redfish, flounder, or the trout?

Is it about the lures, the rod, reel, or bait?

Is it about the time of day? Before sunrise or late?

Does it matter where we fish? A lake, the sea, or river?

Will the sky be blazing hot or so chilly that we shiver?

Is it about the size of bass, catfish, or a gar?

Is it how you cast your line? A foot away or far?

For me, it’s more about the catching, not only just the fishing.

Catching time and catching mem-

ories. That is what I’m wishing.

As you concentrate so hard on that fishing line, I am thanking God above that He made you mine.

When a squirmy little fish wiggles in your fingers, Around a moment such as this, my beating heart just lingers.

I smile because I love you and this time is what I treasure.

It’s not about the fish we catch or inches that we measure.

As you stand there waiting on the line that you have thrown, It gives me time to look at you and see how you have grown.
