Smile: the world’s most powerful gesture -By Harvey Mackay There is a face-lift you can perform yourself that is guaranteed to improve your appearance.

It’s called a smile.

A smile improves your looks and takes years off your appearance.

Who doesn’t want that? I learned long ago that one of the most powerful things you can do to have influence over others is to smile at them. It should be standard equipment for all people. Plus, it takes only 17 muscles to smile, but 43 to frown!

Let’s celebrate the second week in August (Aug. 7-13 this year), National Smile Week.

We are reminded to take the time to smile in a way to bring happiness to others as well as to ourselves. If you don’t start out the day with a smile, it’s not too late to start practicing for tomorrow.

Mother Teresa said, “We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”

Smiling in the workplace can be misinterpreted as a sign of weakness. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’m a big believer in the proverb, “Don’t open a shop unless you know how to smile.” That’s why I never underestimate the value of a smile. You shouldn’t go to work without a smile . . . and that goes for your personal life too.

The smile is “the symbol that was rated with the highest positive emotional content” concludes scientist Andrew Newberg.

Smiling is the universal language.

Everyone understands a smile, and it makes you more approachable. Smiling makes you more attractive, appear more intelligent and improves relationships. The shortest distance between two people is a smile. It’s environmentally friendly. Best of all, smiling is quick and easy

to do, and it’s free.

The Broadway musical and movie “Annie” had a memorable song titled “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” I couldn’t agree more.

Why did the Mona Lisa become one of the most famous paintings of all time? One possible answer is her unique smile. I’m still curious what she was smiling about!

The benefits from smiling are enormous, starting with your health. A smile is a natural anti-depressant and elevates your mood. It can help your immune system, lower blood pressure and even serve as a pain reliever.

Recent studies also show that smiling reduces stress and anxiety, similar to getting a good night’s sleep. Smiling just helps you feel better. Children smile on average 400 times a day, while the happiest adults smile 40-50 times a day. The average adult smiles only 20 times daily.

Smiling can help you live longer. Ron Gutman, author of “Smile: The Astonishing Powers of a Simple Act,” said, “British researchers found that one smile can generate the same level of brain stimulation as up to 2,000 bars of chocolate.” Who would have ever thought that smiling can induce more pleasure in the brain than chocolate?

In his book, Gutman cited a Wayne State University research project that studied pre1950s major league baseball cards. According to Gutman: “The researchers found that the span of a player’s smile could actually predict the span of his life. Players who didn’t smile in their pictures lived an average of only 72.9 years, where players with beaming smiles lived an average of almost 80 years.”

In a similar yearbook study, women who had the best smiles in yearbook photos lived happier lives, had happier marriages and had fewer setbacks.

Comedian Phyllis Diller said, “A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.”

According to Harvard Medical School’s “Harvard Health Publishing,” optimism – which

is linked to smiling – is associated with a lower risk of early death from cancer and infection.

Smiling encourages positive thinking.

When you are dealing with a negative situation, a candid smile inspires positivity. It’s hard to think of negative things when you are smiling.

Your brain is telling the rest of your body that life is good.

I had one friend that always told me to smile because it will either warm their heart or make them angry. Either way you win.

If smiling doesn’t feel natural to you, then practice. Look in a mirror and put a big smile on your face. Even a fake smile can improve your mood. Take a smile break. Remind yourself to smile at every opportunity. A good laugh helps too.

Smiling is contagious. Help spread it around. Just think – you can help another improve their well-being by giving them a chance to smile back!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Truck and Trains

At about 1900, trains were the primary method of moving people and freight to Minnesota cities. Trucks were not yet moving a great amount of freight, since the road and highway systems were very much unimproved.

The roads were primarily a trail, used by horse and wagon, to move people and a little bit of freight from one location to another. The horse drawn wagons were usually owned by individuals and families and had not yet changed to a level of commercial use, creating a new money-making industry.

Once the money-making freight and people moving industries developed, the roads began to improve quickly. At one point the freight trucking and people busing businesses almost replaced the railroads entirely.

For the customer to get their freight on a truck, it usually required simply loading their goods on a truck at their location, rather than loading the freight on a wagon and hauling it to a train depot, where it needed to be unloaded and loaded again. When the train reached the destination, the freight again needed to be unloaded from the train, loaded on a truck type vehicle and moved to it's final destination.

Trucks proved to be more convenient with less loading and unloading thereby making the move much less labor intensive. People love to do physical labor, but really love to avoid it if possible.

People who needed to get to another location for school, visiting or vacationing, seemed to prefer a bus, rather than a train.

Trains emitted smoke and soot from their coal-fired boilers. It stunk! The bus emitted it's exhaust out of the lower back of the cab, therefor being less stinky. Buses usually were able to pick up and drop off passengers closer to their destinations. Again making the travelers life less hassle.

At one time, cord wood sales created a large industry in Minnesota. It's production and transportation required a great deal of

labor. Those who cut cord wood in 1900 either cut it with an ax or a cross-cut saw. Both methods require hard labor. It was then lifted by hand unto a wagon and moved to a landing, or what could be called the place where the wood is stacked. It was then again loaded onto a wagon or sled and drawn by team to the train depot. It was then loaded unto a cord wood train car. Each car carried 20 cords of wood.

Moving the wood to the train yard in winter was usually easier, since the loads were pulled in the shortest way, which included pulling the load across lakes rather than around them.

Maple cord wood was considered the best and it's highest price was $5.00 per cord. But let's say that you are clearing a wooded area on your farm to create a field. You probably have a mixture of types of cord wood. Some is basswood, some aspen, some ash, etc. You probably only get paid $3.50 for the mixed cord. I would say that to cut, load and deliver one cord of wood, it would take one man, his equipment, horses and wagon all day and part of the night. A lot of work for not much pay, but in those times that day's pay would feed, clothe and keep his family warm, with a few cents left over. That's about what we do today. He had the economic benefit of no gas bill, no car payment, no car insurance bill, no electric bill, no state tax bill, no 8% reduction in spending for sales tax. We can comfortably live that way today, but it will put us in a different class from our neighbors.

Kathryn E. Kemper

Kathryn E. “Kathy” Kemper, of Melrose, died peacefully, July 29, 2022 at the age of 89 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 3 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Inurnment was at Freedhem Cemetery

in Freedhem, Minnesota.

Kathryn Esther Jensen was born December 7, 1932 in Brentford, South Dakota to Oscar and Jean (LaBay) Jensen. She married Archie Rien on September 21, 1950 in Brentford, South Dakota.

He died April 26, 1969. Kathy married LeRoy Kemper on May 19, 1973 in Melrose, Minnesota.

She worked for Stearns County as a home health aide for over 25 years. The couple dairy farmed west of Melrose until their retirement.

Kathy enjoyed making wedding cakes, fishing, and researching the Rien and Winter Family trees.

Survivors include her children, Charles “Chuck” (Kathy) Rien of Melrose and Peggy (Paul) Keehr of New York; sister, Merry Jo Ball of Aberdeen, South Dakota; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-greatgranddaughter.

Kathy was preceded in death by her first husband, Archie Rien on April 26, 1969; second husband, LeRoy Kemper on August 14, 2020; brother, Allen Jensen; and sister, Eleanor Dick.

Mary Ann Klasen

Mary Ann Klasen, age 78 of St. Anthony, passed away unexpectedly from cancer on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 3 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Greg Miller, O.S.B. officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Mary Ann Klasen was born April 13, 1944 in St. Rosa, Minnesota. She attended Flowing Well School in Millwood Township and graduated from Melrose High School. She married David Klasen on October 19, 1963. They began farming in Freeport in 1964 and bought their farm in 1967, near St. Anthony, where they raised four boys. She created a wonderful home and farmed side by side with her loving husband. In later years, she worked for Hallmark. Mary Ann was an amazing cook and loved making chicken and dressing for her family. She enjoyed shopping, bowling, playing cards, bingo, pulling rippies, casino trips, but most importantly spending time with family. She was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church and Christian Mothers.

Survivors include sons, Randy (Mary) Klasen of Albany, Lee (Lois) Klasen of Inver Grove Heights, Glen (Julie) Klasen of Albany, and Patrick (Jill) Klasen of Albany; grandchildren, John (Marie), Kristi (Kevin), Kelly (Branden), Kassie, Rachel, Zachary (Samantha), Jack, Ben and Eli; great-grandchildren, Ella, Logan, Myla, Jacob, Lucas, Samuel, and Evelyn; brother, Larry (Elaine) Beuning of Freeport; sister, Marlene (Donald) Schmidt of Hoffman; and sister-in-law, Barb Beuning of Freeport.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, David; parents, Jerome and Lillian Beuning; mother and father in-law, Tony and Adella Klasen; and brother, Darrel Beuning.

Serving as casket bearers were her grandchildren. Cross bearer, scripture bearer and honorary casket bearers were her greatgrandchildren.

John E. Peternell, age 80 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 5 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. John E. Peternell was born August 28, 1941 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Edward and Helen (Omann) Peternell. John attended school in Saint Stephen, MN and high school at West Central School of Agriculture (University of MN, Morris). He later became a director of the WCSA Alumni Association. On August 19, 1963 he was united in marriage to Lou Ann Frie at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel. John and Lou Ann, with the help of family and friends started Pioneer Days in Albany in 1975. They owned and operated Peternell Implement for over 40 years as well as several other associated businesses.

He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, Stearns County Pioneer Club, Rollag Threshers Reunion, and several others. John enjoyed gardening, collecting, and attending tractor shows.

Survivors include his special friend, JoAnn Mick; sons, Mike (Marjorie) Peternell of Avon, Bob Peternell of Holdingford, Dave (Angela) Peternell of St. Stephen, and Joe (Kristy) Peternell of Albany; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Richae, Brady, Bailey, KayLee, Ethan and Bennett; two great-grandchildren, Kinley and Nova; brothers and sisters, Helen (Bernie) Frie, Rosemary Peternell, Jim (Cindy) Peternell, Joan Grunerud, Frank Peternell, Lucy (Mopar) Senstad, and Edward Peternell.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Ann Peternell on September 26, 2009; parents; and an infant son, Donald Peternell.

Serving as casket bearers will be Steve Thielke, Mike Arens, Jeremy Frie, Brennen Shay, Mark Klaphake, and Eric Hawn. Cross bearer will be Brenda Hawn and scripture bearer will be Bailey Peternell. Gift bearers will be Kinley, Ethan and Bennett Peternell and reader will be KayLee Peternell.

Donald G. “Don” Kendle

Donald G. “Don” Kendle, age 90 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Monday, August 1, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Michael Carlson officiating. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Donald Gene Kendle was born May 16, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Frank and Annette (Mathiason) Kendle. He graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul. Don enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 23, 1950 and was honorably discharged on January 23, 1953, serving during the Korean Conflict. Don worked for American Standard Heating and Plumbing for three years and then worked construction. He started working in transit and eventually retired after 32 years with the Metropolitan Transit Commission in 1995. He continued to work installing doors and windows, running his own business for five years. Don moved to Sauk Centre in 2000 to enjoy his retirement. He was united in marriage to Ruth Stenzel on October 29, 2007 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre and lifetime member of the V.F.W. Don enjoyed volunteering at church, the church fish fry, and volunteering at the food shelf. He also enjoyed biking, taking walks, playing cards, camping, and fishing.

Survivors include his children, David (Christine) Kendle of Baudette, Valerie (David) Miller of Sun City, Arizona, Laura (Seth) Putz of Baudette, Lawrence (Kathleen) Kendle of Rockford, and Mary (Scott) Johnson of Warroad; special friend, Shirley Sukke of Sauk Centre; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother, Bill (Arlys) Kendle of Roseville; and sister, Janice Kassube of Surprise, Arizona.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Stenzel on December 16, 2015; parents; brothers, Richard and Ken Kendle; and sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Margie Schultz.

Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or the Sauk Centre Food Shelf.

Dear Motor Medics, I am the proud owner of a 1951 Chrysler with the straight sixcylinder engine. I recently inherited this car from my father in law who had the vehicle since it was new. This car has not had the oil changed on it for probably six or seven years.

I plan on driving the car occasionally in the summer for parades and joy rides amounting to only a few hundred miles per year. How often should I change the oil and what type should I use?

-Bernard from Tyler, Texas Dear Bernard, It sounds like you are in for some fun times with your new toy. To keep the engine working smoothly, the proper oil type and changes will be very important. On my own vehicles of older vintage that see just a few hundred miles a year I like to change the oil in the fall and spring, just before storage and just after getting them out. I do this to keep the engines clean and to keep the moisture in the oil down. My biggest concern when changing oil is the type I use. ZDDP was an additive contained in oil until recently. If you run oil without it you can cause very premature wear and damage to the engine. Make sure you use ZDDP replacement additive or historic vehicle oil that meets the lubricity requirements that the older oils would have had, and use the factory recommended weight rating.

Dear Motor Medics, I hate check engine lights! Well, maybe not so much the light as what it represents… money. They should call it the check your bank account light because every time it comes on, I have to check my account to see if I can afford to turn the light off. My most recent experience involves several tries at a repair myself instead of a professional with no luck. The dash on my 2005 Deville said check gas cap so I checked it and cleared the code with one of those do it yourself readers then it came back on. Then I bought a new cap and it came on again. The code says small leak when I read it with my do it yourself scanner. What should I do next? I tried to save money but I’m no mechanic.

-Dan in Sterlin, Illinois Dan, I am a professional mechanic and I feel your pain. This is one of the engine codes that is best left to a shop. They sometimes pull their hair out on this one. By all means start with checking the cap and replace it if it’s worn. That’s what we do. Next, we use a special machine to smoke test the vent system for leaks and repair as needed. While smoke checking we are looking for external leaks from the tank and lines and also leaks past the vent valve and purge valves. Either one will cause the code.

Does the referendum contain needs or wants

By Duane Hiltner I thought we were sending our children to school to learn, and sports were extracurricular activities. Why are we spending twice as much money on sports than we are on classrooms in this referendum?

What I am hearing from some area people is they are in favor of the auto shop addition, CTE classrooms and labs, ventilation, site grading and utility improvements for around $10,006,000, and they are not in favor of a new swimming pool, tennis courts and converting the existing pool area into a multi-purpose area for around $19,544,000.

They need to take a look at the close to $19,544,000 for the sporting areas and do a lot of cutting for what are needs and what are wants. Just because other schools have something better, they think we need it.

Look on your tax statement and see what you are already paying to the school for taxes right now. There will be voter approved levies, other school levies (this is what the

school can put on your taxes every year and not even ask anyone), then add the new taxes if the referendum passes, for your total taxes that you will pay for the next 20 years.

Is this the right time to be asking people for more money for our schools as everything has skyrocketed? People only have so much money to pay bills. A lot of our citizens live paycheck to paycheck.

Here are examples of how much items have gone up. Consumer prices surged more than 9.1%, gas has gone up 60%, groceries jumped over 12%, restaurant prices jumped over 7.4%, housing costs jumped 14%, airline fares have skyrocketed 38%, fertilizer and seed corn prices for farmers went way up, diesel fuel has gone way up, home heating fuels have gone way up. I hate to see how much our insurance will go up after all the claims are in for the hail damage These figures were taken from the papers in May and June and prices have gone up a lot since then.

Two-Vehicle Crash: July 29, 2022: At approximately 6:18 A.M., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received the report of a two-vehicle crash near 14127 395th Street in Holding Township.

Deputies responded to the scene, along with the Holdingford Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance service. Upon arrival at the crash scene deputies located a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2008 Saturn Aura, both with heavy front-end damage. The 2017 Jeep, driven by Scott DeZurik, had been driving eastbound on Alternating Day, Weekend 395th Street. & Nights.
