of the principal reasons executives fail,” said leadership guru John Maxwell.

“Deficiency in decision-making ranks much higher than lack of specific knowledge or technical know-how as an indicator of leadership failure.”

Remember the time-tested adage: Not to make a decision is a decision. Or as the always entertaining Yogi Berra put it, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

To make better decisions, or to teach employees to do so, try this counterintuitive approach: Assume that whatever decision you make will be wrong. If you have a choice between several options, just ask yourself which alternative you would regret most.

This will help you identify the option that, even if wrong, would cause you the fewest problems. You may not arrive at the perfect answer, but you’ll at least identify the decision you can live with most comfortably.

Here’s a perfect example. General Dwight Eisenhower struggled mightily with the timing for D-Day because he could not make up his mind about the best moment for the attack. The strategy had been planned for years, but it came down to the weather conditions. The airborne attack needed a full moon and the navy needed low tide.

He had teams of meteorologists

advising him, who determined that June 5 would be disastrous because of a looming storm. The weight of the decision was enormous for the more than 150,000 Allied troops involved.

Finally, he came to a decision to postpone the operations for a day. “No matter what the weather looks like, we have to go ahead now. Waiting any longer could be even more dangerous. So let’s move it.” As the history books tell us, the June 6, 1944, attack marked a historic shift in World War II. Few of us will ever face such a momentous decision. But for many dayto-day problems, we must recognize that there is a point at which we need to take a leap of faith, because there comes a point after that when the right decision becomes the wrong decision because it was made too late.

Consider these basic strategies for making good decisions most of the time: • List the pros and cons. This is a time-honored practice, but it’s still useful.

Document the reasons for and against each option. Don’t make it an election – one strong factor on the “yes” side can outweigh a dozen items on the “no” side.

Sort out the issues and determine which way the facts and your emotions point.

everyone happy, but you want people to know you didn’t ignore their feelings. Warning: What’s popular isn’t always right, and what’s right isn’t always popular!

• Visualize the work. Develop a step-by-step list of what you’ll actually need to do to reach your objective, and then picture yourself doing it. Will you be happy (or at least satisfied) along the way?

• Start with a small step. Before implementing a decision, try working on one specific aspect of it. Can you do a good job? Or do you suddenly notice problems you hadn’t anticipated? A test run can tell you a lot about whether or not a course of action is right for you.

• Don’t waste time. Take action once you’re confident you’ve acquired the information you need.

• Be decisive. Stick to your decision once you’ve made it. Change it only if the situation shifts. Take responsibility for your decisions.

• Rely on your values. It is so much easier to make decisions when you have values that help you set guidelines for your decision-making.

You will occasionally second-guess yourself, and you might make a bad decision from time to time. But Robert H. Schuller’s sage advice will help you: “Never make your most important decisions when you are in your worst moods. Wait. Be patient. The storm will pass.”

Plowville USA 1980

It took two years of planning and a lot of assistance from the residents of the area to make the July 1980 National Plowing Contest a success.

Swanville has a population of about 350 people and during the three days, there were 55,000 visitors and competitors who needed to be fed, housed and entertained. A really big undertaking for a small number of community residents.

The food consisted of barbequed chicken along with baked beans, coleslaw, a roll, homemade Rhubarb pie and cotton candy. There was also a hotdog stand for those who craved traditional carnival food.

Swanville, having no hotel or motel, provided space for guests to park campers. Vehicle parking was quite a distance from the festivities, so tractors with trailers and wagons, moved the visitors to and from their cars. Needless to say, this involved a large number of tractors and tractor drivers.

The entertainment available for the kids consisted of a Merry-go-round, bumper cars and the usual midway gaming booths. The adults had access to the beer garden. The hot weather made the beer garden a popular hang-out. For the more adventurous visitors, helicopter rides were available for $2.00 per minute.

The busy air rides allowed the riders to get an aerial view of the little town that turned into a really big attraction.

Many of the plowing contestants came from our local area, however, Iowa, Illinois and Ohio residents also participated. Some of contests were in the antique tractor plowing, horse plowing and modern equipment classes. The horse and antique tractor classes attracted the most people. Some to see how it was done and others watched to bring back memories from their past.

Obituaries Robert W. “Bob” Kemper Robert W. “Bob” Kemper, age 67 of Melrose, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at the VA Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Robert Walter Kemper was born February 24, 1950 in Melrose, Minnesota to Bernard “Ben” and Leona (Boeckermann) Kemper.

Bob was a medic during Vietnam and was honorably discharged on November 23, 1970.

On November 3, 1973 he was united in marriage to Nancy Athmann at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Bob started driving milk truck for his brother, Bill, until 1980 when he started his own over the road trucking business. Due to his illness, Bob retired in 2010.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Schanhaar-Otte VFW

Post 7050, and the American Legion Post 101.

Bob enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and NASCAR races. Bob loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He would read every page of the newspaper and enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and squirrels.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Kemper of Melrose; children, Chad (Carrie) Kemper of Blaine and Kristy (Aaron) Nelson of Sartell; grandchildren, Kimberly, Trey, Ashley, and Gemma; great-grandson, Jace; brothers, William “Bill” (Mary) Kemper of Melrose and Jeff (Linda) Kemper of Big Birch Lake; sister, Kaye Fuchs of Melrose; sisters-in-law, Jane Vogel of St. Cloud and Betsy (Wayne) Tsukamoto of San Diego, California; and brother-in-law, Vern (Diane) Athmann of Sauk Centre.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Leona Kemper; and Goddaughter, Lynn Fuchs Johnson.

Serving as casket bearers will be Brian Kemper, Patrick Kemper, Eric Fuchs, Jay Vogel, Kevin Athmann, and Kari Thompson.

Cross bearers will be Kimberly Nelson and Trey Nelson and scripture bearer will be Ashley Nelson.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Timothy M. McDonald Timothy M. McDonald, age 54 of rural Swanville, died Saturday, July 22, 2017 at his quiet country home surrounded by his sisters and many others who Tim considered his family.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 4th at St. Mary Catholic Church in Upsala, with a gathering of family and friends beginning at 10:00 a.m until mass begins.

Timothy Mark McDonald was born September 15, 1962, the only son of Patrick James and Mary Ann (Stoner) McDonald.

1980 at Patrick Henry High School. Soon after graduation, Tim enlisted with the United States Navy; serving his country for 20 years.

Wherever he was stationed in the Navy, he would make lasting friendships that he valued all through his life. After his retirement, Tim made Swanville his home where he enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with local friends and hosting those far from home.

Survivors include: his mother, Mary Ann McDonald; sisters, Colleen (Kenn) Patterson, Jeannine McDonald, and Kathleen (Michael) Harasyn; nephews, Clayton (Ana) Patterson and Nathaniel (Gabby) Patterson; great niece and nephews, Lucas, Daphne, Zachary and Brandon; numerous loving cousins and friends from all corners of the earth.

Celina M. Althaus, age 88 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, July 31, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A celebration of Celina’s life will be held at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. A family inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Celina Margaret Braegelmann was born January 10, 1929 in Richmond, Minnesota to Leo and Mary (Olk) Braegelmann. She was united in marriage to Raymond Althaus on April 30, 1946 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Celina worked Koenig’s Variety

as a clerk for 16 years before retiring in 1975.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. Celina loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed playing cards, embroidering and quilting, gardening, puzzles, and baking; her pies were second to none.

Survivors include her children, Ron (Mary) Althaus of Melrose and Mary Kaye (Tim) Garvey of White Bear Lake; daughterin-law, Diane Althaus; six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren; brothers, Cyril Braegelmann of Melrose and Nick Braegelmann of Melrose; sister Gysella Moore of Eagle Lake; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Celina was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Althaus on February 22, 2000; parents; sons, David Althaus in 2014 and Ken Althaus in 1991; brothers, Linus Braegelmann and Celestine “Mike” Braegelmann; and sister, Leona Althaus.

Thomas Marshal Peterson

T h o m a s Marshal “Tom” Peterson, age 71, of Nisswa, formerly of Melrose and originally of Richfield, was escorted by the angels on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 to his eternal home in Heaven to be forever with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, after a lengthy battle with esophageal cancer.

Visitation and celebration of Tom’s life will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 3 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. A private family interment was held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 5 at Granite City Baptist Church in St. Cloud (County Road 134 just north of Veterans Parkway) with Pastor Dennis Campbell officiating. Lunch will be served following the service.

Thomas Marshal Peterson was born December 27, 1945 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Duane and Winifred (Robbins) Peterson. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1963 where he participated in football, hockey, and track. He continued his schooling at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He majored in Physical Education with a minor in Religion and Biology and graduated in 1967.

During his college years, he met and married Shirleegene “Shirley” Flamo of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, the daughter of Joe and Edna (Brue) Flamo.

Tom worked as a youth and camp director for the YMCA in Port Edwards, Wisconsin and lived in Wisconsin Rapids where their first son, Adam Thomas was born. A change in occupations later moved them to Savage, Minnesota and then LeSueur where their

second son, Seth Joseph was born. Tom did insurance sales, construction work, and for many years, drove a commercial route for Browning Ferris Industries. They moved to Prior Lake in 1973 where their sons would attend and graduate from Prior Lake Christian School. During those years, the family gained assurance of salvation through each one’s personal faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross, received believer’s baptism by immersion, and became active members of the Prior Lake Baptist Church.

Tom and Shirley would later enjoy some years of truck driving together and lived in Nisswa after the death of Tom’s parents before coming to Melrose to start a family business in 2000.

Tom was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2015, and after lengthy hospital and rehab stays he was put on hospice in May of 2016. He and Shirley moved back to Nisswa in August of 2016 to spend his last days at their peaceful lake home.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Nisswa; sons, Adam Peterson of Melrose and Seth Peterson of Nisswa; grandchildren, Emily, Josiah, Phillip, and Jeremiah; sister, Evelyn (Bruce) McLean of Coon Rapids; and sister-inlaw, Gail Peterson of Milbank, South Dakota.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; dear daughter-in-law, Lauren Peterson; and his brother, Bruce Peterson.

It would be Tom’s hope and prayer that all who read this obituary would come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and join him in Heaven one day.

Aymer E. Nelson

Aymer E. Nelson, 104 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Sunday, July 30, 2017 at the Mother of Mercy Assisted Living in Albany, MN. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Craig Johnson officiating. Burial took place in the Community Covenant Cemetery in Upsala, MN. Aymer Emanuel Nelson lived a long, fulfilling life. He passed quietly in his sleep on July 30, 2017 surrounded by family and loving caregivers.

Aymer was born in Duluth to Swedish immigrants, Anton and Hilma (Fohlin) Nelson, on November 24, 1912. He was the youngest of three siblings (Ames and Alice). Aymer spent summers working on the farm of Frank Anderson in Upsala and later partnered with Martin Erickson on a turkey farm there. He also worked as a bellman at the Spaulding Hotel in Duluth and in his younger years, he owned various cars, a few motorcycles and three airplanes.

At the age of 30 he volunteered to serve in the Army. He participated in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach. After landing, his unit spent the next four weeks battling their way to St. Lo, only 23 miles away. Until the end of the war, his unit, the 81st Chemical Mortar Battalion, marched across France,

Belgium and Germany, including the battle of the bulge. His unit also liberated concentration camps, including Ordruff. During this period he led a small group of soldiers that guarded the rocket scientist, Wernher Von Braun, before he was shipped to America.

Always optimistic and respectful, he was full of positive stories of the war and how much he valued all the people he met and the experiences he had while serving in the military.

Upon returning from Europe, he eloped with his one and only sweetheart Verna Nilson in Duluth in August 1946. She grew up just across the road from the Erickson farm in Upsala and “had her eye on him” from an early age. The young couple bought the Erickson farm and moved their growing family to Upsala. As part of the GI Bill, Aymer took agriculture classes. Over the years he farmed, served as telephone board chair, drove school bus, the senior bus and was active on his church board and with the American Legion.

Aymer was always a kind, adventurous soul. During his later years he enjoyed international travel with his family and had the opportunity to travel to his parents’ Swedish homeland at age 71. In 1994, he traveled to France for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. He was even part of a Stevie Nicks video, while dancing on the ship! He proudly became a grandfather at 82. He loved chocolate, heartfelt hugs, sunny weather and (really) hot coffee.

Aymer is survived by his daughter Fay (Nelson) Giordano and her husband Frank Giordano; his son Tom Nelson and his wife Melinda Bennett, grandchildren Justus and Carly Nelson and many nieces and nephews.

Aymer was preceded in death by his wife, Verna and siblings, Ames and Alice.

Raymond W. Becker, Jr. A memorial celebration was held at 4:00 PM, Monday, July 31, at the Pelican Lake Ballroom in St. Anna for Raymond W. Becker, age 51 of Holdingford.

Private burial will be at a later date.

Raymond died Friday in Holdingford, surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with cancer where he surpassed all the odds.

Raymond was born June 9 1966 in Little Falls to Raymond Sr. and Emily (Vasecka) Becker. He graduated from Holdingford High

School in 1984 and he was working at Roma Foods in Rice. Raymond liked gardening; cooking, canning, and he would spend many hours on his Harley Davidson Motorcycle. He and his friends co-founded the Bacon Run. He also enjoyed playing cards and bingo. His beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of his family and friends. He did lots of great things in his life to help other friends with cancer.

Raymond is survived by his mother, Emily Becker, Avon; his brothers and sister, Theresa (LeRoy) Johannes, Avon; Owen Becker, Avon; and Peter (friend, Irene Johnson) Becker, Avon. He is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.

Raymond is preceded in death by his father, Raymond Becker Sr., sisters, Pauline Lichy, Ann Becker and nephew, Timothy Johannes.

Beatta D. Mielke

Beatta D. Mielke, 84-year-old resident of Little Falls, MN passed away July 29, 2017 at Highland Senior Living in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls, MN with Rev. Gary Hendrickson officiating. Burial took place in the Spring Brook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Beatta was born on December 14, 1932 in Culdrum Township, Morrison County to the late Edwin and Ella (Petrich) Axel. She grew up in the Culdrum Township area and graduated with the class of 1951 from Little Falls High School. She was united in marriage to Loren Mielke on August 1, 1951 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Randall, MN. They began their married life farming in Swanville, MN where they spent most of their life raising three children. Beatta enjoyed spending time working outside in the yard, tending her vegetable and flower gardens and gathering wood for her fireplace. Her passion was keeping her home and yard immaculate. Beatta’s family enjoyed her fresh baked goods (especially her coffee cake and buns) and home cooked meals. Later in life, she and Loren moved from Swanville to a townhome in Little Falls where she donated her time baking donuts for the Little Falls

Senior Center. She still enjoyed keeping busy outdoors and had fun going to the casino with family and friends. Beatta will be truly missed and forever remembered for her strong faith, her dedication to her family as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and her great sense of humor.

Beatta is survived by her loving husband, Loren Mielke of Little Falls, MN; children, Steve Mielke and fiancée Paula of Jacksonville, FL, Vicki Pangrac and husband Dan of Bowlus, MN, Brad Mielke and wife Rhonda of St. Cloud, MN; brothers Ed Axel and wife Joan of Richmond, VA and Harvey Axel and wife Darlene of Little Falls, MN; sisters Dorothy Decker of Brooklyn Center, MN and Audrey Hopke and husband Terry of St. Cloud, MN; grandchildren Aaron Mielke, Kristi, Adam, and Michael Pangrac, Hope Mielke and two step-grandchildren (Chris and Dan) and one step-greatgrandchild (Mya).

Community Snapshots

On Thursday, July 27, and Saturday, July 29, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office had the distinct honor and privilege in escorting a fallen sailor to his final resting place and honoring his sacrifice. Navy Fireman First Class Elmer Kerestes was on the USS Oklahoma on Sunday morning, December 7, 1941. The Oklahoma was torpedoed multiple times, capsized and sank. Hundreds of sailors were not able to be identified at that time and were buried with their fellow sailors as “unknown.” With advances in DNA testing, the US Armed Forces have been working to properly identify previously unknown service members. Elmer Kerestes’ remains were identified and he was brought home to Holdingford. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the escort from Minneapolis Airport to the funeral home on Thursday and from the funeral to his internment at Highland Cemetery, north of Holdingford, on Saturday. During this time, we utilized several of our own former and current service members. The chance to pay our respects to this fallen sailor will not be forgotten. May you rest in peace, Elmer.

The HoldUp Bandits Baseball team took third place at the 11U AA Minnesota Sports Federation State Tournament in Mankato, July 28-30. The Bandits earned their way to the state tournament by taking first place at the Hutchinson 11U AA Tournament, held May 27th. During the state tournament, the Bandits defeated Minnetonka Blue 19-3 and Norwood Young America 16-2 to advance to the championship bracket. In the championship bracket the Bandits defeated Watertown-Mayer 12-3, however lost to Central Range 1-2 in extra innings.

Invasive weeds spreading from stateowned ditches

I don’t recall ever seeing so many patches of the invasive Canada thistle going to seed along our roadways.

Judging from my unofficial drives around the district and state, township and county roads aren’t too bad. At least it appears that spot spraying or cutting has taken place, and areas which probably contained noxious weeds have been eliminated. But our state highway and freeway right-of-ways have significant areas containing plants with the white, cotton-like seeds just now beginning to blow around with the wind. If we can’t control these weeds on state land, how can we expect private land owners to do any better? In fact, many of the weeds moving onto private land and farm fields are originating from our highway ditches.

I realize that MnDOT is in a bit of a predicament. They came out last year with tough, new rules about the private mowing of their road ditches, with one of the main regulations reaffirming that cutting couldn’t begin until the first of August. Well, that’s just too late if there is to be any attempt at keeping these weeds from going to seed.

So, except for the safety cut along the top of the ditches, I’ve observed relatively little mowing done in state ditches.

I visited with a MnDOT official from the Brainerd-St. Cloud area, and he said they were doing what they could and that maintenance budgets were tight. I get that.

Their districts are large and mowing or spraying take time and manpower. So, with those considerations in mind, shouldn’t all the state highway ditch mowing done by farmers be more appreciated? Where cutting has already taken place, the ditches are neat, they are safer and the weeds have been taken care of. It seems to me to be a win-win situation. The farmer mows and bales the ditch, thus saving on the amount of cutting that MnDOT needs to do.

The new rules proposed last year were met with a great deal of opposition, so implementation was pushed back a year. In the meantime, the parties involved were to

get together and come up with rules that will work. To me, the biggest negotiation item involves the time when mowing can start.

Granted, we have the statute already on the books that delays mowing until August, but we also have noxious weed laws saying those weeds must be controlled and cannot be allowed to “go to seed.”

Minnesota’s largest outdoor ag show is scheduled this week as Farmfest makes its three-day run at the Gilfillan Estate near Redwood Falls. It goes Tuesday through Thursday and, in addition to displays set up by hundreds of ag suppliers, a series of forums and panel discussions is also scheduled. I will take part in two of them on Tuesday afternoon. The first deals with the challenge of farming in these difficult times, while the second will focus on farm safety.

A major highlight Thursday will be a listening session conducted by the chair of the federal House Agriculture Committee.

A new farm bill is being worked on, and this session will allow testimony from Minnesota folks about what they feel needs to be included in the next bill, scheduled to go into effect in 2018.

Lots of local activities also on tap this week. The Pope County Fair in Glenwood runs Wednesday through Saturday. In addition, several celebrations are also scheduled with parades in Albany and Forada on Saturday and Greenwald’s Barley Days parade set for Sunday morning.

Virginia Super, 89 year old resident of Flensburg died Sunday, July 30 with her loving family by her side A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 4 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating.

The burial will be in the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 P.M. on Thursday and on Friday from 9:00 until the hour of the service at the church.

Virginia Bernadine Super was born January 29, 1928 in Ward Springs, Minnesota to the late Bernard and Alvina (Terwey) Kuhlmann. She attended country school as a young girl. Virginia was united in marriage to Linus James Super on August 25, 1952 in Ward Springs, MN. The couple

Mary Lou Walz, age 66 of Melrose, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 1 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Mitchell Bechtold concelebrating.

Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the service.

Mary Lou Larson was born April 23, 1951 in Alexandria, Minnesota to Lloyd and Dorothy (Jensen) Larson. On July 10, 1971, she was united in marriage to Gary Walz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Mary Lou made the world beautiful with style, kindness, and generosity. She was a talented florist and decorator professionally, for family and friends, and as a volunteer.

made their home in Flensburg for many years. Throughout her life, Virginia worked various jobs: housekeeping, waitressing and homemaker. She was a fabulous cookie baker.

She enjoyed gardening, canning, biking, walking and listening to polka music. Virginia was a member of Sacred Heart Church and the Rosary Sodality. Her family and friends will remember her for her cookie baking and canned pickles. She was known to can 150 pickles and 150 tomato quarts each season.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Beth V. Super (Bill Seibert) of Wadena; son, James L. (Emma Garcia) Super of Melrose; brother, Jerome Kuhlmann of Little Sauk; sister-in-law, Joyce Leidenfrost of Little Falls; son-in-law, Mike Cecko of Little Falls; six grandchildren and 5 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Linus; daughters, Barb Cecko and Beverly Super; sister, Marcelyn (Dwane) Ritter; sisters-in-law, Arlen (Jerome) Kuhlmann, Violet (Florian) Wotzka, Adrienne (Phillip) Wozniak; brothers-in-law, Daniel (Deloris) Super and Emanuel Super.

She enjoyed contributing her time and talent to Bridging the Gap; a statewide women’s ministry. Mary Lou enjoyed being Nana to her granddaughter, Liliana. She will be missed by many, especially by Gary and her children.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Walz of Melrose; children, Erica Walz of Monticello, Adam Walz of Moorhead, and Andy (Jill) Walz of Eagan; granddaughter, Liliana Erma Walz Seviour of Moorhead; sisters, Barb Friberg of Madison, Wisconsin and Julie (Jim) Wesen of Starbuck; and brother, Rick (Shelli) Larson of Forada.

Helen was born February 21, 1920, in the St. Cloud Hospital to Mathias and Agnes (Kuper) Heinen. She grew up on a farm near Albany. She married Sylvester Scepaniak on September 27, 1941, in the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Helen was employed by Tobin’s Variety Store and Dindorf Drug until her retirement. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, the Seven Dolors Christian Mothers, and the Albany American Legion Auxiliary.

What Does Your Work Say About You? - By John Young 3rd Annual Concert I like to look for what parenting books would call ‘teachable moments’ when we travel. Not that these moments are aimed at our children, but rather they become fodder for a topic I can share in one of my educational tips videos or articles.

On our recent trip to Itasca State Park in northern Minnesota, I stumbled across something that I thought was a great example of why some small businesses stand out, and while others get swept under the rug.

I took a tour of some of the older buildings in the park. These buildings were constructed in the 1930s by either the CCC or the VCC groups that were part of the Federal works programs at the time.

The CCC was the Civilian Conservation Corps which featured young men from 18 to 25 who signed up to work in camps that built many of the older structures still standing today in communities around the state and nation. The VCC were veterans from World War I who were a bit older, more experienced, and were also in need of work and became part of this Federal works program.

Both groups built structures in Itasca State Park. The lesson comes in the final results of their work.

Just by looking at the work of these two groups, you can see which one had the skills, experience, tools, and knowledge to do the job. You can see a level of professionalism in their work as some of the finer details weren’t overlooked in creating their masterpieces.

In the first photo, we are looking at the hearth inside of the Forest Inn at Itasca State Park. This building has BEAUTIFUL stone work and was constructed by the VCC crew. You can see how well they cut and prepared the granite for the hearth and fit the pieces together with a minimum of extra mortar. The whole building shows of the great stone work and allows the Forest Inn to be a testament to a professional, quality job.

grabbed some rocks from the local rock pile and threw them together with some mortar to make the foundation. The stones were not shaped or even really chosen for the best fit possible. The mortar joints between the rocks are huge in some spots.

This job shows what most would view as a DIY or Do It Yourself quality completed by amateurs.

If you are in a business that is creating products or delivering service, the lesson you can take from this is your work or results need to be so good, that they show your talent and experience. Then future customers KNOW they are hiring a specialist who can do a better job than they could do on their own. Customers will pay a fair/premium rate for high-quality work.
