Why do we cheat? -By Harvey Mackay

Baseball has surely been in the headlines lately, and for the ugliest of reasons: cheating.

Not the old hide-the-ball-inthe-glove trick or greasing or scuffing the baseball.

No, those would be too obvious.

In their pursuit of perfection, or at least superior performance, dozens of high-paid athletes, superstars and utility players alike, turned to performance enhancing drugs that they hoped would evade discovery.

It didn’t work, and America’s pastime is plagued with scandal.

The sad thing is that cheating is not that uncommon. We see it on Wall Street, in politics, in famous marriages and just about everywhere you look. It seems it’s become part of our culture.

Is the spirit of competition that drives American progress creating a nation of cheaters?

People cheat on diets, at cards or on exercise programs. Bolder folks might

cheat on taxes, resumes or dating profiles. But where do we draw the line in the sand? Is some cheating okay?

We need to examine that attitude. I still believe that trust is one of the most important – if not THE – most important attribute of any truly successful person.

In a Conference Board poll of 15,000 juniors and seniors at 31 universities, more than 87 percent of business majors admitted to cheating at least once in college, the largest such percentage.

Engineering students came in second, with 74 percent admitting to cheating.

Next came science students, with 63 percent. Humanities majors, at 63 percent, were least likely to cheat.

According to USA Today, college students on 27 campuses in 19 states were asked what they would do if they caught a classmate cheating. Would they report it? 81 percent said, “No.” Are you as surprised as I am that there are more than 150 websites that offer essays, term papers and dissertations for sale?

Does that set the stage for life? Well, I surely hope not. But reading the headlines might make you think otherwise.

rageous behavior that most of us would never condone, it casts a long shadow.

After all, if they’ll cheat on the ones they love, what will they do to get votes? Or push legislation through?

When trust is eroded, an entire group suffers, even those who are squeaky clean.

Business is hardly exempt. A survey

by CFO Magazine found that 20 percent of financial executives feel more pressure since 2001 to “make results appear more favorable.” In a recent survey of students at the nation’s top business schools, two-thirds of women and more than half the men said they do not believe that most companies are “run honestly or ethically.”

In a speech, former Bank of America global risk executive Amy Woods Brinkley spoke about what the research firm Inferential Focus called the “gaming” of everything in our lives. “What they mean in short is that our passion in America for games – for entertainment and competition – seems to be exceeding its normal bounds. As a result, the lines between recreation and reality have grown blurry. More and more aspects of our society appear to be treated like a game to be won . . . rather than a real life to be lived.”

A baker bought his butter from a local farmer. After some time, the baker began to suspect that he wasn’t receiving full pound bricks of butter from the farmer.

For several days, he weighed the butter after it was delivered. His suspicions proved correct. So he turned to the law to settle the matter.

Donald Ring

Obituaries Donald J. “Don” Kraker Donald J. “Don” Kraker, age 91 of Melrose, died Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, August 27 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Military Honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Donald Joseph Kraker was born June 17, 1922 in Melrose, Minnesota to Alphonse and Wilhelmina (Schwegmann) Kraker. After graduating from Melrose High School in 1940, Don moved to Washington D.C. and worked for the Veterans Administration. He entered active service with the military on January 28, 1943 during World War II. He served as a Rifleman in the 386th Infantry, 97th Division in Germany and Czechoslovakia.

Don participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. From April 24, 1945 until May 9, 1945, he was a prisoner of war in Eger, Germany (Sudetenland).

On January 18, 1946 Don was given an

Honorable Discharge, and received a Good Conduct Medal and a Purple Heart Medal.

After the war, Don moved to St. Paul and worked for the Veterans Affairs at Fort Snelling as an Insurance Underwriter. Don spent many weekends coming to Melrose to visit his parents, his brothers, Jack and Joe, and their families. After retirement, Don moved back to Melrose. Don spent a lot of his free time traveling. Don’s travels included frequent trips to Granite City, Illinois to visit his sister Mary Louise and family. He enjoyed traveling by tour bus across the country, trips to the State and World Fairs and casino trips as well. Don was gentle-natured and very generous.

He loved spending time with family and friends. Don will always be remembered for his love for dogs and the smile and laughter they brought him. He resided at Pine Villa for the last seven years.

Don was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 and the American Legion Post 101.

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Lorraine Kraker of Melrose; 21 nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend, Clyde Tise of Melrose.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John “Jack” Kraker and Joseph (Florence) Kraker; sister, Mary Louise (Forrest) Swan; and niece, Anne Kraker.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Donald Raymond Ring was born August 20, 1946 at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Francis and Elizabeth (Gillies) Ring of Kempton, North Dakota. Donald grew up on the family farm in Northwood, North Dakota.

He attended Pleasantview Country School in Grand Forks County. After earning his GED, Donald continued his education at the Wahpeton State School of Science, NDSU and Alexandria Technical College.

Donald worked alongside his father on the family farm. For many years, he worked at Simplex in both Michigan and North Dakota. After moving to Minnesota, Don worked with his uncles, particularly Ervin

and Leonard Gillies at Gillies Auto Parts of Sauk Centre. In 1980, Don started his own auto recycling business. He continued working and running this business until his death.

Don was an avid storyteller who always had a one-liner or joke to tell. He had a lifelong love of learning and reading.

Don found great joy in researching his family history. Don was always on the lookout for his next adventure and enjoyed traveling the back roads, exploring State Parks and camping with his children.

Donald is survived by his children Tennille (Aaron) Grossman of Billings, MT, Melissa Ring of St. Cloud, MN, Jacob (Roxanne) Ring of Hoffman, MN, and Aaron (Mary) Ring of Keller, TX; grandchildren, Detrick Grossman, Evan Grossman, Kayla Ring, Kylie Ring, Lauren (Nolan) Glahn, Hazen Ring, Salem Ring, Xander Ring, and Draver Ring; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ring of Rochester; former wives, Teresa Griffin of Glenwood and Nancy Guile of Warsaw, Indiana; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Bernard.

Dorothy “Dodie” Paggen The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Dorothy “Dodie” Paggen, age 88 of Luck, WI, formerly of Holdingford, MN was held We d n e s d a y, August 28 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Dodie died Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Amery Wisconsin Regional Hospital in Amery, WI. Dodie was born December 26, 1924 in Winona, MN to Leon and Ada (Pinger)

Laska. She worked as a secretary in the Drew Insurance Agency in St. Paul.

Dodie married LeRoy “Roy” Paggen in St. Paul and they lived in St. Louis Park before retiring to Holdingford. Roy died in 1998. Dodie moved to Wisconsin in 2003 to be closer to her daughter. Dodie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers.

Dodie is survived by her daughter, Judy (Steve) Bergemann, St. Croix Falls,WI; her brothers and sisters, Louis Laska, St. Paul, MN; Bernadine Brown, Forest Lake, MN; Barbara (Raymond) Feiertag, St. Paul, MN and Anthony (Brenda) Laska, Becker, MN. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Alexander (Laura) Draeger, Spokane, WA; Kimberly (David ) Delgado, San Pedro, CA; and four great-grandchildren.

Eugene H. “Gene” Olmscheid E u g e n e H. “Gene” Olmscheid, age 93 of Melrose, died Saturday, August 24, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery. Military Honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Eugene Henry Olmscheid was born July 29, 1920 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Frank and Elizabeth (Wulfekuhle) Olmscheid. He worked on the farm and drove truck delivering livestock to the St. Paul stock yards during the 1930s.

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he and five other young men from Stearns County attended aircraft school in Minneapolis before getting into a 1937 Ford and driving to San Diego, California.

They were employed by Consolidated Aircraft building the B-24 “Liberator” used in WWII. Gene entered the war in 1944 and was assigned to an amphibious unit of the Navy. He was a motor mechanic aboard one of the landing crafts from the USS Burleigh AP-95 transporting troops ashore during the battles of Saipan, Guam and Okinawa. As the war ended, his ship made numerous voyages to the various islands bringing troops home during operation “Magic Carpet”.

After the war, Gene returned to Minnesota and married Ann Walz on June 10, 1946. They were married for 58 years

before Ann’s death in 2005.

He was employed by Kraft Foods, the Melrose Hospital and Stearns Electric retiring from there in 1985. Traveling and fishing, especially ice fishing, were Gene’s favorite hobbies, but most of all he loved visiting friends and family.

Gene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and a life member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his sons, Dale (Yvonne) Olmscheid of Clearwater and Duane (Gail) Olmscheid of Melrose; eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren; son-in-law, Dick Henry of Avon; brothers and sisters, Julian (Rosetta) Olmscheid of San Diego, California, Stanley (Marion) Olmscheid of St. Martin, Hilary (Mildred) Olmscheid of Milwaukee, Oregon, Bernadine Dingmann of Richmond, Adeline (Howard) Graf of San Diego, California, and Sister Lorraine Olmscheid, O.S.F. of St. Cloud; sistersin-law and brother-in-law, Peggy Herges, Susan Olmscheid, Alverna McLanahan, and Werner Fuchs; and special friend, Vera Ritter.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Ann Olmscheid on March 12, 2005; parents; daughter, Marlene Henry; brothers and sister, Claude Olmscheid, Roman Olmscheid, and MaryAnn Fuchs; and brother-in-law, Jerome Dingmann.

Gene was proud of the city of Melrose and loved its citizens. He will be missed by many.

Serving as casket bearers were Dale Olmscheid, Duane Olmscheid, Rick Olmscheid, Nathan Olmscheid, Mike Garding and Rob Zollar. Cross bearer was Leah Olmscheid and scripture bearer was Heather Olmscheid. Gift bearers were Jennifer Garding and Gena Zollar.

State Patrol seeks assistance in locating hit and run vehicle

On Saturday, August 24, 2013 at approximately 9:45 p.m., the Minnesota State Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal crash on USTH 71 just north of Sauk Centre. A north bound motorcycle’s passenger fell off the motorcycle near the entrance to the Grey Stone Golf Course. The male was then subsequently struck by a passing motorist traveling north bound on Hwy 71.

The driver of the striking vehicle did not stop at the scene of the crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol is asking for the public’s help in locating the vehicle that had fled the scene of the crash. It is believed that the suspected vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper area. Debris from the scene suggests a Buick Regal as the suspected vehicle.

Joel Hanson to perform in Holdingford

Community Country Church of Holdingford is proud to present Joel Hanson in Concert on Sunday, September 15th, 2013. The concert will be a free will offering and will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Community Country Church.

Joel Hanson is the lead singer of the Grammy nominated, Dove Award winning band PFR. He is a prolific songwriter who’s writing credits include PFR, Mercy Me, Sara Groves, Chris Tomlin, Phillips, Craig and Dean, Fusebox, Petra, Phil Keaggy and Geoff Moore and others.

Joel started out as a camp counselor at Camp Shamineau, a Christian youth camp near Motley. In 1991 he helped formed the band PFR, which stands

for “Pray For Rain”. Over the course of the next years PFR released their third album, “Great Lengths” in 1994. The album had the band’s biggest hit, “The Love I Know”, inspired by I Corinthians 13. The Great Lengths tour introduced a new band, Jars of Clay who would become one of the most popular Christian groups to date, also enjoying great mainstream success.

Having changed musical direction with each album, PFR moved into an edgier, heavy sound for 1996’s with the album “Them”. While the album was well-received, the band shortly afterward announced that they were splitting up. In 1997, “The Late Great PFR” was released, a greatest hits album containing three new songs, with one (“Forever”) becoming a Christian radio hit.

After the breakup of the band, Joel went on to a solo career with the albums “Captured”, “Broken” and “What If It Is”. Joel also performed in a duet with Sara Groves entitled “Traveling Light” in 2003.

Originally from Brainerd, MN, Joel currently lives in the Minneapolis area with his family and is the Worship Pastor at the Church of the Open Door. Joel continues to do solo work as well and will be bringing some of his more well known music as well as some uplifting praise and worship to the concert on Sunday, September 15th.

By Val Cervenka, forest health program coordinator, DNR Forestry Division Q: The ash trees in my yard are producing lots of seeds this year, more than in previous years. How unusual is this?

Is it weather related?

A: Trees produce large amounts of seed for a couple of reasons. Trees under stress from drought, soil compaction, or planting “off-site” may produce more seed to ensure another generation.

Weather can also impact the number of seeds a tree produces. Ash are wind-pollinated, so if there are heavy rains during flowering, pollen is unable to travel by wind, and seed set and production can be reduced.

In some species of trees, heavy seed production occurs normally every few years.

Tax issues will not be part of special session There will be a special session of the Legislature, but it won’t deal with the issue of the sales tax expansion on farm repairs.

Agreement could not be reached on an agenda that would look at tax issues, in addition to disaster relief for 20 counties in central and southern Minnesota. As a result, we will convene on the morning of Sept. 9 with the only item to be addressed being Minnesota’s match for federal FEMA dollars for those counties affected by heavy rain and storms in late June. I was disappointed that we won’t be taking up the sales tax issue during the special session, but there still seems to be considerable sentiment that it will be addressed early in next year’s regular session, which begins in February.

While on the subject of taxes, I read an account in the Minnesota Farm Guide of Gov. Mark Dayton’s recent speech at Farmfest, along with his meeting later that same day with the media. His Revenue Dept. commissioner, Myron Frans, later told reporters that, even though farmland values are increasing, many farmers are going to see reductions in property taxes next year.

His department is calling for approximately a 1.5-percent reduction statewide in property taxes next year, or about $121 million. I have talked with assessors who are saying that agricultural land will take another big increase in valuation for next year’s taxes. Keep in mind that our tax system and its valuation of property is about a year behind what is actually happening with the sale of property. Assessors look at the prior year’s arm-length transactions to come up with property values for the coming year’s valuation. So, even if land values have stopped their double-digit increases and have actually stabilized, we still have at least another year of large increases to work through the tax system. The entire process is complicated as assessors must also work with ratios of sales and other measurements as they seek to provide some statewide uniformity.

My concern has to do with ag land values taking another big jump in valuation for taxes payable next year in 2014.

If the values for farm land are going to see a 20-percent increase, or even 15 percent, how are the taxes on that land going to decrease? We are talking about a 1.5-percent decrease in taxes payable statewide, so when these large ag land valuations are factored in, I really wonder about any actual lowering of farm land taxes. Is there going to be a shift in who pays those local taxes? Yes, because when the value of one portion of the proverbial three-legged stool that pays local property taxes goes up, in this case, ag land, and if the other two legs of that stool, commercial property and residential property, remain stable, there will be a shift in how those local taxes are paid.

Stearns County lost an outstanding public servant recently with the passing of Commissioner Don Otte. Don served the western portion of the county with a passion for 14 years. He would always listen to his constituents’ concerns, and then act on those concerns to the best of his ability. Don will be missed by everyone who knew him. My sympathies to the family.

Deer licenses now on sale; lottery applications due Sept. 5 Deer hunting licenses are now available for purchase. Hunters who want an either-sex deer or special hunt permit for the coming season must apply by Thursday, Sept. 5, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said.

Hunters should carefully review the list of lottery areas, particularly in extreme northwestern Minnesota and the Iron Range area of northeastern Minnesota. The following permit areas are designated as lottery this year but were

not last year: 176, 101, 105, 111, 267 and 268. Elsewhere, other permit area designations have changed too in response to local deer population changes.

Regulations are detailed in Minnesota’s 2013 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Handbook and Deer Season Map, which now are available wherever hunting and angling licenses are sold, online at www.mndnr.gov/regulations and in many DNR offices across the state.

Local Municipality Minutes Burtrum City August 5, 2013 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7 p.m. on August 5th by Mayor Allen. All members were present.

People can purchase a deer license and apply for the lottery or a special hunt at any DNR license agent, by telephone at 888-665-4236 or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Lottery winners will be notified in October.

Hunters can apply for lottery deer areas and special hunts using both their firearm and muzzleloader licenses. Although a hunter can be selected for both licenses, successful applicants can only take one deer in lottery permit areas. In the case of special hunts, a person may draw both a firearm and muzzleloader

permit, in which case he or she must adhere to the bag limits established by each special hunt.

Family and Friends Support Group for eating disorders Sept. 5 The St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic will offer a Family and Friends Support Group for Eating Disorders from 4:30-6 p.m. Sept. 5 at CentraCare Health Plaza in the Leonard, Street & Deinard room. This month’s topic will include a brief review of the stages of nutrition therapy and strategies for meal support.

Groups are led by a licensed psychologist or registered dietitian and provide support - through education and sharing - to friends and family of

individuals with eating disorders. Participants will learn tips for making mealtimes less stressful, how to respond to food and body image struggles and what to say or not to say.

had returned and she was able to remember the details of her life. Happily, she went home to her family.

We read in the Psalms of a king who had a similar experience. Though no doubt he knew who he was and where he was, he had been wandering aimlessly.

Once he asked God to teach him good judgment and knowledge, reminding Him that he was aware of His commandments and knew their value for his life.

He admitted that he had gone astray and as a result was “afflicted.” And he added, “It was good for me that I was afflicted that I might learn Your statutes.”

If we let them, the storms in our lives may serve to bring us back to, or perhaps, much closer to our Lord Jesus Christ. It always seems as though the grass is greener after the rain.

This week, the southern third of Minnesota is at low fire danger. The northern third of the state and the metro area at moderate fire danger, meaning fires start easily and spread at a moderate rate. The central part of the state from Pine County in the east to the North Dakota border and from Marshall County to Lac qui Parle County has a fire danger rating of “high,” increasing the probability that wildfires could occur and spread at a rapid rate.

Burning of vegetative debris is allowed with a burning permit available through local forestry offices, local fire wardens, and online. See www.mndnr. gov/forestry/fire for the fire danger ratings and burning permit restrictions.

Small grain harvest and haying operations could be a source of ignition during the coming weeks, as well as recreational vehicles such as ATVs. DNR fire mangers urge people to use caution with all fire – campfires and burning debris. Campfires are allowed if they are no more than 3 feet high by 3 feet across and in a cleared area. When having a campfire, keep a shovel handy, make sure a water source is available, stay with the fire at all times, and make sure the fire area is cool to the touch before leaving. As precipitation over the last 30 days has been at 50 percent of normal over most of Minnesota, fire managers from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are seeing an increase in fire danger and are urging people to use caution when working and recreating in dry areas.

So far this summer, fire occurrence has been low, but a predicted dry spell could change that quickly. DNR forestry areas with the highest fire potential are Bemidji, Park Rapids, Backus, Little Falls, Sandstone, and lands north of Cambridge and south of Cloquet. Continuing warm dry weather could expand the area of concern to the Arrowhead region in northeastern Minnesota where lightning ignitions could become more likely if thunderstorms develop with light rain, fire managers said.

The National Weather Service predicts Minnesota is entering a warm and dry spell for the next week or so. This is the time of year the state sees scattered rainfall where the amounts can vary widely even a few miles apart. Most of the state is still green, but it can change with the hot weather, especially if it stays rain free.

Once the weather cools off, the possibility of a killing frost increases. A killing frost pulls moisture out of fine fuels such as grasses and brush. A combination of dry weather and dry, dead fuels could lead to another active fall fire season.

New Library service furnishes educators with topic materials Busy educators who want a collection of learning resources for study can take advantage of a new service at Great River Regional Library (GRRL).

Using the new Educator Request Form on the library website (griver. org), educators can request subject-specific library materials by specifying the grade level they are teaching, the information they need, how the information will be used, and the sources already checked. On receiving the request, library staff will pull together a selection of books from across the region that are suitable for the specified classroom use.

The educator can then pick up the materials at whichever of the library’s 32 locations he or she selects.

“Not all schools have school librarians, and not all schools have collections of up-to-date resources on a large variety of topics,” said Karen Pundsack, GRRL’s Patron Services Coordinator. “The library can collaborate with schools to help fill that gap.” The service is available to homeschoolers as well as classroom teachers. The library estimates a one-week turnaround window for requests. Educators will check out the materials on their personal library card.

“This is something a teacher or homeschooler could do for themselves.

They could go online, search the library catalog, place holds on a variety of items, and then check them out as they arrive at their local library. The main advantages of using the webform are quality and speed. Our librarians are knowledgeable about the collection and will find good materials more easily. And second, we will be able to do it faster than anybody else,” Pundsack said. It’s likely that some materials will be available for delivery immediately

from the large collection shelved in St. Cloud, with additional materials arriving separately as they are pulled from other library locations.

The Educator Request Form is one of a group of reference and research services available under the Ask A Librarian link on the library’s home page.

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) provides library services at 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. It provides Central Minnesota residents with nearly 1 million books, CDs and DVDs, 250 public computers, programming and information services.

Due to a power outage, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very dark so the paramedic asked Kathleen, a 3-year-old girl to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby. Very diligently, Kathleen did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed and after a little while, Connor was born.

The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom.

Connor began to cry. The paramedic then thanked Kathleen for her help and asked the wide-eyed little girl what she thought about what she had just witnessed?

Kathleen quickly responded, “He shouldn’t have crawled in there in the first place...spank him again!”
