Warren Bennis led the way; he was synonymous with leadership

By Harvey Mackay Unfortunately, we lost Warren earlier this month but his leadership lessons and principles will live on for years.

He wrote more than 30 books on leadership, including his landmark work, “On Becoming a Leader.” He advised U.S. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Ford and Reagan.

I got to know him during his 30 years at the University of Southern California where he was a Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and headed The Leadership Institute. I had the privilege of serving on Warren’s board.

interviewed Warren for a group I was mentoring, he said, “I don’t know of a time when leadership is more of an issue.”

“To survive in the 21st century, we’re going to need a new generation of leaders, not managers,” he said. He clarified that leaders are strategic thinkers, while managers are tacticians.

Warren prophesied that managers had to change their way of leading. “Move to maestro from macho in the way we’re thinking,” he challenged. That means to shelve “command and control” thinking.

Be a real leader who both listens and guides people to get the job done.

I asked Warren to prioritize, as best he could, the skills of a corporate leader today.

The first thing he mentioned was contextual intelligence. In other words, CEOs and their teams have to know “what is going on in the world that could inflect,

deflect or influence their organization.”

He warned that CEOs and top teams today get too isolated and insulated and ultimately fail.

He said the first and primary task of a leader is to define reality and to give people perspective of where we are and provide the big picture of what’s going on. The next steps are to align the troops and get the team in place.

In “On Becoming a Leader,” he wrote that all leaders seem to exhibit some, if not all, of the following ingredients: • Guiding vision. “The leader has a clear idea of what he wants to do – professionally and personally and the strength to persist in the face of setbacks, even failures.”

• Passion. “The leader loves what he does and loves doing it. The leader who communicates passion gives hope and inspiration to other people.”

• Integrity. “I think there are three essential parts of integrity: Selfknowledge, candor and maturity … Until Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 you truly know yourself, strength and weaknesses, know what you want to do and why you want to do it, you cannot succeed in any but the most superficial sense of the word … Candor is the key to self-knowledge. Candor is based in honesty of thought and action, a steadfast devotion to principle, and a fundamental soundness and wholeness… Maturity is important to a leader because … every leader needs to have experienced and grown through following – learning to be dedicated, observant, capable of working with and learning from others, never servile, always truthful.”

• Trust. “Trust is not as much an ingredient of leadership as it is a product.

It is the one quality that cannot be acquired, but must be earned.”

• Curiosity and daring. “The leader wonders about everything, wants to learn as much as he can, is willing to take risks, experiment, try new things. He does not worry about failure, but embraces errors, knowing he will learn from them.”

For a long time, Warren worked hard to achieve a key ambition: to become a university president. When he finally achieved his goal as president of the University of Cincinnati, he came to an unsettling realization. He liked having the prestige of being a university president, but he didn’t enjoy doing the work it required.

That’s when he started developing

what ultimately became a four-question test for people seeking success in life.

Those four questions are: • Do you know the difference between what you want and what you’re good at?

• Do you know both what drives you and what gives you satisfaction?

• Do you know both your own priorities and values, and those of the organization you work for?

• Can you identify the differences between the two alternatives in each of the above questions – and can you overcome those differences?

“If you can,” he wrote later, “then success will be yours. In a nutshell, the key to success is identifying those unique modules of talent within you and then finding the right arena to use them.”

Obituaries Paul Edward Boeckermann Paul Edward Boeckermann, infant, of New Munich, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 26 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, David and Adriana Boeckermann of New Munich; brother, Dominic at home; grandparents, Ben and Pam Hinnenkamp of Sauk Centre and Pete

and Joan Boeckermann of Albany; greatgrandparents, Florence Hinnenkamp of Melrose, Edna Boeckermann of Upsala, and Lucille Ripplinger of Holdingford; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Paul Edward was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Edward Hinnenkamp, Tony Boeckermann, Paul Ripplinger, and Wilfred and Agatha Roering.

Serving as casket bearers were Jonathan Boeckermann and Matthew Hinnenkamp. Cross bearer was Holly Boeckermann. Readers were Amanda Boeckermann and Gretchen Wolbeck.

Gift bearers were Hope, Bethany, and Anna Boeckermann.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

Raymond A. “Ray” Jennissen, age 63, of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2014 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 26 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment took place in the parish cemetery.

Raymond Alex Jennissen was born March 22, 1951 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Peter and Doris (Schramel) Jennissen.

John Raymond “Jack” Glaser John Raymond “Jack” Glaser, age 79 of Grey Eagle, died Thursday, August 21, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. No services will be held.

Jack was born February 17, 1935 in St. Paul, Minnesota to William and Theresa (Wiener) Glaser. He married Betty Hutchens on July 12, 1984.

The car needs $1,500 in repairs, and it’s worth $5,000. I have $40,000 in cash saved, $40,000 in investments and I make $80,000 a year. I also have $15,000 in student loan debt, but the only other thing I owe on is my house. Should I pay to repair the car or buy something else for $15,000?

-Dave Dear Dave, Nice name! If you wrote a $15,000 check for a newer car and wrote a $15,000 check for the student loans, it would leave you with $10,000. I wouldn’t buy a $15,000 car in your situation. I’d buy a $10,000 car. You could sell your current car for around $3,500 if it needs repairs, combine that with your money and get a $13,500 car. Then, you could write a check and pay off the student loan.

With no car payment, no student loan payment and a good car, you can really lean into your budget. Think about it.

You’d have no debt except for your home, and you could rebuild your savings in a hurry and be in really great shape in about six months. Plus, you’d have $15,000 sitting there in the meantime!

an attitude and the best golden retriever on the planet. I love animals, and like you, I’ve got a lot of rental properties. But I don’t allow animals in my properties.

Some people have accused me of hating all animals except my own. I can tell you that’s not true. But the fact is a lot of people don’t take good care of their animals and keep an eye on them. It’s hard enough to find trustworthy, responsible renters these days, and if you add a dog or cat on top of that you’re just asking for trouble. I’ve had situations in the past where I had to spend $10,000 to clean up a house after a tenant had a dog or cat in there. They’ll chew things up, stain and stink things up, and tear things up.

Sometimes you even have to replace the floorboards!

I had a lady offer me $10,000 deposit the other day on one of my properties, just so she could move in with her dog. I said no. It’s in all my leases now — no animals. I don’t allow them in at the beginning, and if one of my tenants gets one after they move in they either have to find a new home for the animal or move out themselves. At that point they’re in violation of the lease.

The problem is I really do have a heart for animals. I love them. But as a landlord who’s running a business, it just doesn’t make sense.

These songs often defined the mood of the decade in which they became popular at the turn of the century, the sentimental “In the Good Old Summertime”; the flirty flapper of the ‘20s teasing with “Ma, He’s Making Eyes at Me”; “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” mirroring the ‘30s sadness over the Depression and approaching war; the Elvis generation gyrating to “Blue Suede

Shoes” and slow dancing to “Unchained Melody”; the socially-conscious ‘60s and ‘70s with its “Blowin’ in the Wind” folk songs and militant “We Shall Overcome” anthems.

Forever Young banded together several years ago as an outlet for seniors to express their love of music. Currently, there are 40 members from Melrose and surrounding communities. Director Irene Sullivan has led the group from the beginning. Sue Roe accompanies performances and rehearsals, which are held each Thursday afternoon from April through September.

This year Bill Michael is on trumpet, Todd Prout on drums, and Don Neu on bass will perform individually and with the chorus on several numbers.

Report shows where states’ gas taxes rank

Minnesota House Research has produced a fact sheet comparing the taxes that each of the 50 states levy on gasoline. We rank 16th among the states in terms of the gas tax collected in Minnesota and 20th when other states’ local excise and sales taxes are included.

Our gas tax is 28.5 cents per gallon with another 2.1 cents collected for clean-up and inspection fees.

The state with the highest tax on gasoline is Illinois, where a total of 65.7 cents in state and local taxes is collected on each gallon. That breaks down to 42.9 cents on the state level and 22.8 cents locally. New York ranks second in gas tax collections with 41.9 cents on the state level and 18.9 cents locally for a total of 60.9. At the other end of the scale, the states with the lowest gas taxes are New Jersey with total state and local collections of 14.5 cents, Virginia at 11.7 cents, and Alaska with just 8 cents on each gallon of gas.

Some states, including Minnesota, use a “blink-on” method of collecting revenue for underground tank cleanups and inspections. The tax is imposed whenever a specified fund reaches a certain level and blinks off when the fund gets large enough again. In those states with local excise or sales taxes, the amount of tax in the largest city was used to compile information for this study.

Attended an interesting meeting this past Sunday evening with a group of farmers and grain buyers from Slovakia and Hungary. They were in this country to get a first-hand look at our agricultural system and to meet with officials of our grain organizations. Communication, for the most part, was a bit difficult as we had to go through an interpreter when visiting. Each gave a brief description of their involvement in farming back home, with many of them working with what they called a cooperative.

From their descriptions, these appear to be large farming operations and are the remnants of what used to be known under Communism as collective farms.

I visited with one member of the group from Hungary who could speak English. When the topic of importing soybeans came up, I asked about the European Union’s ban on GMO products.

He said it was an important topic for Europeans and will probably remain so. In fact, he said the Hungarian constitution contains an article that bans GMOs from being grown in the country. However, it is NOT illegal to import them into Hungary. That seems like a head-scratcher to me as their farmers are not allowed to grow genetically modified crops, but those same crops are allowed to be brought into the country.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City August 13, 2014 These are unapproved minutes.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 13th day of August, 2014 in council chambers. Council members present were Ralph Muellner, Thom Muellner, Dennis Barrett and Andrea Kraska. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Andy Bartkowicz and guests Dave Tschida, Vance Johnson and Matt Zinniel.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the July 8, 2014 meeting as written. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Mayor updated the council on the following items: 1. Building permits were issued for St. Joseph’s Church to install a new handicap ramp and for Thom Muellner to install a cement apron in front of his garage.

2. A huge thank you to Harold Rohde for his four years of service through Experienced Works.

Matt Zinniel was in attendance to discuss his building permit application in the hopes of building a shed on his vacant lot on Minnesota Street. If the council is in agreement, Matt would then move forward with obtaining more specific information on size, type of materials, and location on lot. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to allow Matt to build a shed on his vacant lot. Prior to any permits being issued, Matt would be required to return to the council with an exact size for the building as well as the type of materials that would be used. Setback requirements will be met. Mayor Gohman called for a roll call vote.

Dave Tschida returned to the council regarding the building permit that was approved last fall to move in a house. One of the requirements of the building permit was to establish property lines, and Dave presented a copy of a bill as proof that the property was surveyed. The house will be five feet off the property to the east and twenty five feet off each of Jackson Street East and Woodman Street North as required by ordinance. The house should be moved in within the next couple of weeks. City water will be connected at that time as well as a new private sewer service line. Dave was reminded that City staff would be required to oversee the digging for the water and sewer service lines.

Vance Johnson was in attendance to seek approval to move in a garage from Dave Tschida’s property to his property. The garage will be tied in to the side of his current garage on the north putting it flush on the west side. The siding and the roof will be replaced. The old truck trailer will be moved out.

The garage door would be reduced from a twelve foot to a ten foot.

They would get any necessary permits for moving the garage. The council asked what the time frame would be for tying the two garages together and replacing the siding and the roof. Vance and Dave in-

formed the council that it would be approximately one month before any of the work would start once the garage was moved.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to allow moving of the garage to Vance Johnson’s property, with work to be started within thirty days after it is moved. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The council would like Andy to obtain estimates on what it would cost to replace sewer pipes with new PVC pipes or line existing clay sewer pipes.

2. Dave and Andy will take over the Fire Hall and Library cleaning duties.

3. Andy discussed the purchase of a blower/vac to be used at the parks to blow off the cement as well as cleaning the leaves from the storm sewer in the fall.

He also would like to purchase a small generator to run the shop vac to clean out all the gate valves around the city. Estimated total cost to purchase both items would be $250. A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve the purchase of a blower/vac and small portable generator. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The clerk shared information with the council regarding a used generator for $18,500. It was the consensus of the council that they would not be purchasing another generator at this time.

The council reviewed the preliminary budget, wages and levy for 2015. Matt will continue on as back-up for Andy through December 31, 2015. The Clerk requested to increase office hours from 25 hours per week to 30 hours per week.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve wage increases as follows: a dollar per hour for Maintenance Supervisor, and fifty cents per hour for part time maintenance employee, and an increase in clerk office hours from 25 to 30 hours per week, effective January 1, 2015. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the fall lawn spraying. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The clerk informed the council that East Side Glass will be coming in to replace the two library windows within the next week.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the election judges for the general elections to be held on November 4th as follows: Lori Hellmann, Jeri Ahrens, Vera Grammond and Marilyn Muellner. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

There were no yard clean-ups for council consideration.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2014-11. A Resolution of Sponsorship for the Community Concern for Youth Program with Todd-Wadena Community Corrections. It is understood that the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle School Board contributes $2,940.00, and the Long Prairie City Council contributes $2,330.00, for a total community contribution of $5,548.00.

Discussion was held on the additional water service line for a fire sprinkler system for Village View. There is no charge from the city for the additional water service line, but any costs associated with digging in and installing the service line which would include any tar that may be dug up, be paid

by Village View. There would be no cost to the City for this project.

Ralph Muellner stepped down as council member to discuss a personal matter.

Ralph and Marilyn Muellner submitted a request to vacate a portion of Bovee Street North from North Lake Street West going north through their property.

They own the property on both sides of the street with that portion of Bovee Street North being their driveway.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve Resolution No. 2014-13, A Resolution Verifying Sufficiency of Petition and Ordering Hearing Date and Preparation of Notice. The public hearing

Paula Muellner will teach First Grade at LPGE Elementary. After graduating from St. Cloud State University, Paula taught at St. Mary’s School in Melrose for 10 years and Grey Eagle Elementary for 8 years. She has been substitute teaching for the past 2 years. Paula and her husband live in Grey Eagle with their two children and one dog.

She likes to bike, kayak and camp. She also loves to read cooking magazines and try new recipes. Paula is looking forward to meeting her first grade students. She is excited to be teaching full time again and looks forward to learning many new things this school year.

Ashley Pesta is not exactly new to LPGE schools but will be taking on a new role this year as Title 1 Teacher. Ashley graduated from St. Cloud State University and has been a substitute teacher and Title 1 Para. She also works for the Long Prairie Ambulance Service. She is married with 3 stepsons and 2 sons. Ashley is looking forward to getting into the classroom and having a great time learning with our awesome students.

Kirstin Welz is the new K-6 Elementary Music Teacher. After graduating from the University of Minnesota - Duluth, Kirstin taught elementary music in the St. Cloud District for grades K-5 and Spanish Immersion. She also taught choir and voice lessons for grades 5-8 at Sartell Middle School.

Kirstin really enjoys musical theatre outside of teaching. She is involved with GREAT Theatre Company in St. Cloud. She also enjoys playing piano and reading during her spare time. Kirstin is excited to meet her new students. She is looking forward to getting to know everyone and to be a part of such a wonderful community.

Abby Edin is a new ELL (English Language Learner) Teacher at LPGE Elementary. This Staples native graduated from Bethel University and taught ESL at Odyssey Academy in Brooklyn Center. She also taught Spanish Education at Delano High School. She holds degrees in ESL, Spanish Education and Spanish. Abby is an avid tennis player and played in both high school and college. She studied abroad in Guatemala and hopes to join the Peace Corps or travel abroad in the future. Abby looks forward to building relationships with her students and their parents, gaining experience and having a lot of fun.

Chuck Speer will be the Secondary Band Instructor. This Minnesota State University-Moorhead graduate has 17 years of experience, which includes tenures in Turtle Lake-Mercer, ND, ACGC, Underwood and most recently West Central Area Schools.

Chuck’s wife Kerrie, teaches English in Browerville. They have 3 children. Jacob will be a sophomore and Mary will be in 7th grade at LPGE Secondary. Their oldest daughter, Dana, is studying music at Iowa State University. Chuck looks forward to making their home in Long Prairie, meeting new students and making the LPGE Band Program become the best it can be.

Pete Phillips will teach US History and Area Studies at LPGE Secondary School.

This Bemidji State University graduate is excited about this first teaching position.

He and his wife Shari, have three children and currently live in Wadena where both he and his wife grew up. Before he decided to return to college, Pete worked as a radio announcer, owned his own painting business, wrote a newspaper column and did some voice over work. Pete served on the Wadena City Council and really enjoyed public service. He ran for the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 2010. He may have lost the race, but it put him on the path that lead him to room A206 at LPGE Secondary School. Pete is looking forward to sharing the adventures of his interesting travels with his students.

Christopher Laine will be the new 7th and 8th grade Math Teacher. This University of Minnesota-Duluth graduate is excited to start his career at LPGE Secondary School as well as to get to know Long Prairie and Grey Eagle and learn what they have to offer. Christopher grew up in Little Falls and is pleased to stay close to home.

He is looking forward to pushing himself and his students to their limits.

Currently, he still enjoys farming when he can help out on his dad’s farm, playing in multiple softball leagues, and spending time with his wife, Trisha, and their 1 year old son, Jackson. Chris is looking forward to becoming a member of this great school system and community and also teaching students how important physical fitness is both now and throughout life. He hopes to challenge students to do their best everyday.

State Fair and Farm Bureau Program Salutes Minnesota Family Farms

The Minnesota State Fair and the Minnesota Farm Bureau recognize 215 Minnesota farms as 2014 Century Farms. Qualifying farms have been in continuous family ownership for at least 100 years and are 50 acres or more. Century Farm families receive a commemorative sign, as well as a certificate signed by the State Fair and Minnesota Farm Bureau presidents and Gov. Mark Day-

ton. Since the program began in 1976, more than 9,900 Minnesota farms have been recognized as Century Farms.
