Sports prepare women for life, business -By Harvey Mackay I attended a virtual panel presentation recently in Minneapolis about women in sports, which highlighted the important benefits of participation.

One of the panelists cited a study that discovered nearly 90% of women in C-suite positons in companies have a sports background. The moderator, Mary Jo Kane, a retired professor in the School of Kinesiology and the former director of the Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport, both at the University of Minnesota, asked the four panelists what role sports play in developing this executive skill set.

Everyone mentioned mental toughness and resiliency, which translate to all aspects of life, especially business.

Mental toughness is persevering through difficult circumstances, conditioning your mind to think confidently and being able to overcome frustration. Athletes must be in tip-top physical shape, but if they don’t prepare themselves mentally, they will never become champions.

Mental toughness needs to be exercised to grow and develop. Get out of your comfort zone by taking on new tasks, and then seek out other duties to test your determination.

As for resilience, nearly all the successful people I know have dealt with defeat, slumps, failures, change and adversities of every nature. The reason they are successful in spite of all that is they had the confidence and courage to face those setbacks and find a way to overcome them, whether it was pure stubbornness or refusal to admit defeat.

Successful business people, however, know that even if adversity strikes, they can work around it. They are resilient.

The strong survive not because they are determined to conduct business as usual, but because they find ways to rise above the issue at hand.

Remember, you can’t live life with an eraser. You can’t anticipate every possible problem, no matter how hard you try. But you can resolve to face challenges as they arise.

The panelists also discussed teamwork, goal setting, hard work and the importance of having mentors.

“Sports teach you about wins, losses and failures,” said Pam Borton, CEO of PBP Consulting Group, and former head coach of the women’s basketball teams at the Universities of Minnesota and Vermont. “As a coach, you have to build highly skilled teams. You learn how to hire, fire and recruit. All these skills are transferrable to business. As leaders you learn how to help people and enhance people skills.”

Laura Day, executive vice president and chief business officer of the Minnesota Twins, said she learned to “surround herself with champions – both men and women. You also need to be comfortable with change. Sports unlock a lot of things.” She mentioned that she is curious by nature and has an insatiable desire to learn.

Day added: “Culture is important because you can thrive in an organization that shares your values. It’s tough to fit a square peg into a round hole.”

Lisa Lissimore, associate director of the Minnesota State High School League, said you learn a lot from winning and losing and tackling challenges. Sports gave her the confidence she needed because she had a complex about being tall and skinny growing up. Sports also allowed her to work with a variety of people.

director of Gopher Athletics at the University of Minnesota said she learned grit from competing in sports. “You stay in there when you get knocked down.

You have to perform under pressure with calmness. There is always a sense of urgency, but you must remain calm.

“Sports teach you to solve problems.

For example, if you have a bad tee shot on the golf course, you have to think about how to get out of that situation. Sports also builds consensus. You learn to strive to get better every day,” Manning added.

So what can parents and grandparents do to help their daughters and granddaughters be successful going forward?

Manning talked about her older brother who always told his daughter to dream big and then dream bigger.

Day also talked about “feeding your dreams. Tell your daughters and granddaughters to stay positive. Trust yourself. Many people are willing to help, so don’t be afraid to ask them.”

Borton also mentioned the importance of being role models for your children and to provide support and encouragement. “Everyone needs positive reinforcement,” she said.

“We need to make visions of possibilities available to young women,” Lissimore said. “You can do a lot of things if you put your mind to it.”

Truly, it’s mind over matter.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Depression Changes The Great Depression has had an effect that is still haunting us today.

Prior to the stock market crash, the bank failures and the drought, Americans lived in a “pay as you go” country. If you figured out how to have enough to eat, keep a roof over your head and set aside a little money for your old age, you were doing what was expected of you as an American. The system worked pretty well. The old folks spent their later years in their homes or the homes of the kids.

There were charities that may add some nutrition to those in need. The seniors weren’t faced with excessive medical bills, since the medical world had not yet identified some of the ailments or the medicines to cure them. Life expectancy was not into the 80’s or 90’s, there was a feeling that when one was no longer able to contribute to society, it was time to go, since it was difficult enough to feed the productive family members.

In 1935, the height of the depression found a ¼ of the population without an income and 50% of seniors living in poverty. Banks were closing and taking with them the security that the citizens had worked their lifetimes to accumulate.

Farms were facing closure due to drought and prices that were far below the cost of production due to consumers inability to pay money for food. Many were unable to pay mortgages and as a result were forced from their homes. My Grandmother told of living one year with a gross family income of $200.00. There were actual cases of parents giving children up for adoption, since they could not afford another mouth to feed. In other words, it was a rather unpleasant situation.

To be able to supply the family with food, many individuals made beer and whiskey for a small additional income.

Others looked to the surrounding area harvesting fish, pheasants, ducks and rabbits for food. Excess amounts of these food products were sold or traded to others. In one case, a fellow paid kids a nickel for cottontail rabbits and a dime for jackrabbits. He also purchased squirrels from his local hunters. These animals were purchased in the fall when cooler temperatures prevailed. They were gathered until there was a large enough number to take them to a city for sale. One time he filled the box of a 1 ½ ton truck with rabbits, took it to the city and sold them all in a couple of days. This seems to indicate how hungry the people had become.

In 1935 things changed. The Government began to release money to help relieve the lack of money. Social Security was created to assist seniors, disabled, widows and orphans. The benefit varied from $10.00 to $65.00 per month.

To relieve the unemployment situation CCC Camps and the WPA were created to make jobs building forests, government buildings, bridges, playgrounds, streets and many other needed community projects. The difference from what we see today is that the individuals receiving the income were required to supply their labor to earn it.

The changes that occurred during the depression are still with us today. Social Security contributions have created a fund that in some cases is the only income source for Seniors. Economic help from the government no longer requires that the recipient supply their labor to earn it.

job, but feel they have the right to demand more free money through constant complaining and demonstrating. They feel that they deserve more, just because they are special citizens that deserve it.

Each year Americans are allowing the government to supply more free handouts.

Our thinking has certainly changed. Each year there are less workers and more freeloaders. Other than the pride of being productive, it seems that the free-loaders

1. Write down your financial goals I recently read about a Harvard study on written goals. They asked students if they had set clear, written goals for their

future and made plans to accomplish them. Only 3% of them had written down their goals and plans. Thirteen percent had goals, but hadn’t written them down. And 84% of respondents didn’t have any goals at all.

Ten years later they followed up with the students. The 13% who had goals that weren’t written down were earning twice as much as the 84% who had no goals at all. But here’s the real kicker: The 3% who had written down their goals were earning 10 times more than the other 97% combined.

That’s the power of a written goal. I can’t emphasize enough how crucial it is that you write down your goals. Your goals can be anything from getting out of debt by the end of the year, to making a plan for retirement. Even your budget counts as a

2. Save up an emergency fund An emergency fund turns a crisis into nothing but an inconvenience.

Kenneth J. Rafteseth

Kenneth J. Rafteseth, age 92, of Sauk Centre, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at the St Cloud Hospital in St Cloud, Minnesota; after suffering from a broken hip.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 27 at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Becky Thomas officiating. Interment will follow at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the funeral home in Sauk Centre.

Kenneth Jerome Rafteseth was born May 16, 1928 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota to Hjalmer and Nellie (Wiseth) Rafteseth. His mother passed away when he was 8 ½ years old and he was brought up in various foster homes, attending several different elementary schools. Kenneth attended the last two years of school in Thief River Falls, Minnesota and graduated in 1948.

Kenneth was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls on July 8, 1928 and was confirmed at Holt Lutheran Church in Holt, Minnesota.

He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 and then attended the Northwest Electronic School in Minneapolis.

He installed and repaired mobile radios for Motorola, RCA and then moved on to General Electric, repairing small appliances.

Kenneth married Darlene Zarbok of Parkers Prairie on April 11, 1959 at Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minnesota.

In 1973, they purchased a hardware store in Sauk Centre and it was known as ‘Ken’s Ok Hardware’. Kenneth, Darlene, and family operated ‘Ken’s Ok Hardware’ until 1985. He also drove school bus for 30 years, charter bus for the St. Cloud Bus Company and Mayers Bus Company of Melrose. He enjoyed music, singing with the various choirs in Minneapolis, a barbershop group in Alexandria, and the choir at First Lutheran Church. Kenneth’s favorite was the ‘jam’ sessions with various friends playing his electric steel guitar.

Survivors include his son, Dale (Kelly) Rafteseth of Albany; daughter, Donna Rafteseth of Hendersonville, North Carolina; grandsons, Adam Rafteseth and Matthew Rafteseth both of Albany; brothers and sister; Merle (Ruth) Rafteseth of Crookston, Delores Harder of DeLand, Florida and Duane Rafteseth of Hawley.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Darlene Rafteseth on September 29, 2017.

Arrangements were handled by PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Dean V. Ahrens, age 53 of Grey Eagle, died at the St. Cloud Hospital after having a heart attack while riding his motorcycle on Sunday, August 23, 2020.

Saturday, August 29 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Dean Virgil Ahrens was born February 17, 1967 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to William and Darlene (Jacobs) Ahrens. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1985 and graduated from Alexandria Technical College in 1988 with an emphasis in Diesel Mechanics. He was united in marriage to Susan “Sue” Von Wahlde on November 28, 1987 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Dean worked at Jures Repair in Wadena for two years and then purchased the farm where he raised his family near Grey Eagle.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Dean enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, going on family vacations, spending time at the cabin and was a collector of John Deere 435 tractors. Dean loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren in which he adored. He loved taking them on gator rides and watching them dance.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Ahrens of Grey Eagle; four sons, Chris (Samantha) Ahrens, Mitchell Ahrens, Tyler (Tina Bauer) Ahrens, and Douglas Ahrens; grandchildren, Amelia, Emmera, Aubrey, Everett, Adaley, and Everly Ahrens; brothers and sisters, Deborah (Joseph) Tauer, Dale (Patsy) Ahrens, Denise Clifton, Dennis (Nancy) Ahrens, Donna Ringler, and Dan (Sara) Ahrens; and sister-in-law, Kathy Von Wahlde.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Ray and Rita Von Wahlde.

Milo Hartwig

Milo Hartwig, 86 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN. A Christian Burial was held Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN, with Pastor Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial took place in Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Milo was born on December 17, 1933, to the late William and Emma (Strom) Hartwig in Swanville, MN. He attended School District #91. He entered the U.S. Army in 1957, and was honorably discharged. Milo started a career in long haul trucking working with Janesville Auto in Dilworth, MN, until transferring to Janesville, WI, where he lived until retiring in the late 1990’s and moved to a farm in Swanville, MN. He enjoyed taking care of his farm yard and growing sweet corn.

Milo rented out the remaining crop land to local farmers. In his free time, visiting with family and friends was his favorite. Milo was known to be a great cook, especially his potato sausage. It was not odd to find him with a bowl of ice-cream. He also could be found working on small projects in his wood shop, and helping fix anything else as he was a great handyman that was willing to help others.

Darlene C. (Spieker) Mrozek, entered her eternal life on Monday, August 24, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving husband & family at the young age of 74. They were blessed with 56 years of marriage and together they had 5 beautiful children and raised them in their hometown of Little Falls, MN. Becca Mrozek-Scott of Apple Valley, MN, Roberta (Chuck) Tichy & their 6 children of Apple Valley, MN, Netta (Jason) Mrozek Hodgkins & their 4 children of Shakopee, MN, Rae Mrozek & her 3 children of Little Falls, MN, Rory (Jessie) Mrozek & their 6 children of Sartell, MN. Her interests included reading, camping, quilting, cooking & spending precious time with her family. She was a devoted Catholic and an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Help for Kids who Stutter is as Close as Your Library Kids who stutter have a lot to say, and friends can show them how in Stuttering: For Kids By Kids, a DVD in English and Spanish starring kids who stutter, available at most public libraries or through interlibrary loan.

Many children who stutter have never met others who struggle with the same disability. In this DVD from the Stuttering Foundation, they meet kids who recount how they handle challenges such as teasing, speaking out in class, and teaching others about stuttering.

Swish, a lively and engaging animated basketball character designed by students at Purdue University, narrates the DVD. The children, who range in age from first-graders to high school students, offer frank and sometimes differing views of stuttering.

For example, Matthew, age 10, says about his speech difficulties, “It’s no big deal.” But Kate, age 9, worries about talking, what is going to happen next and whether or not she’ll stutter.

Arianne, age 14, says, “The hardest part about stuttering is to get through it and to stay in there when you’re stuck.”

Umang, age 12, agrees, “Sometimes it

gets kind of annoying when you want to say something and you can’t. I also get worried what other people might think if I do stutter and wonder if I’ll be able to get out of my blocks and things.”

“All those interested in helping kids learn more about stuttering will want to see this tape,” said speech-language pathologist Bill Murphy of Purdue University. “The children featured are a perfect example of how to openly and honestly handle stuttering.”

“This is an important tool for families and teachers of kids who stutter,” added Jane Fraser, president of the nonprofit Stuttering Foundation.

Other professionals and specialists in stuttering in this production include Kristin Chmela of Northwestern University, Joe Donaher of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Lisa Scott of Florida State University, and Lee Caggiano of Friends.

The 73-year-old nonprofit Foundation has provided free materials to public libraries nationwide. A library that will shelve them can download a request form at http://www.stutteringhelp.org/ libraries-information.

August 20, 2020: At 11:22 responded to a residence on the 27000 block of County Road 98, Grey Eagle for a damage to property complaint. A garage had been shot by a shotgun. If you have any information, please contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

August 21, 2020: At 18:06 responded to County 13 near the Hub Supper Club for a 2 vehicle accident. Timothy Draxten, 56 of Long Prairie, was traveling south when his van left the roadway. The van then traveled out of the ditch and collided with a Ford pickup, driven by Jason Theisen, 39 of Burtrum, traveling north on County 13. Theisen and his passenger reported minor injuries. Draxten was taken to the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie with minor injuries. Grey Eagle Rescue, Long Prairie Ambulance and Petries Towing assisted with the accident.

The murder of Carol and Barry Bennett occurred in August 2019 in rural Long Prairie. Dylan Bennett entered a guilty plea to 2 counts of 1st Degree Murder. Dylan was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release. Currently, I make the same money as a co-worker with the same title and the same amount of time on the job. But since we’ve both been there, I have taken on many more responsibilities than he has. What’s your advice on asking for a raise? I feel that I have the right to complain about the situation, and think I should make more money than he does.

-Vincent Dear Vincent, If you honestly feel like you deserve a raise because of your effort and performance on the job, that’s fine.

Sit down with your leader, and make an objective, logical, and reasonable argument for why you deserve more money. I wouldn’t mention your coworker, because it’s just not relevant.

What is relevant is the value you bring to the company.

I understand how you feel right now.

But no, you don’t have the “right” to complain. You agreed on your pay when you took the job, and you should perform your duties with integrity and character.

What someone else does, or doesn’t do, isn’t tied to your personal compensation.

If you think you deserve a raise, and you’ve got the results to prove it, sit down and have a respectful conversation with your leader. Show him or her the numbers, and the value you bring to the company, and explain why you feel you should get more money.

-Elizabeth Dear Elizabeth, I get what you’re saying. It might help speed up the process a tiny bit, but the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but it doesn’t keep you from taking on more debt.

Many people think they’ve really done something to solve their debt problems when they do this. But you’ve got to remember that getting out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the person you see in the mirror. You’ve got to make a commitment to getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, monthly budget—that means keeping track of every, single dollar and living on less than you make.

In many cases, when people have problems with debt it’s the result of unwise lifestyle and financial choices. But guess what? When you change, interest rates don’t matter nearly as much. And when you shift your mindset about money, that will make a difference in a way that changing credit card companies and chasing lower interest rates can’t!

Dear Motor Medics, I drive a 2011 Ford F150 and I am having trouble with the in-dash tv screen which controls the radio and the air conditioning. I like the way it has worked until now that I can not see the screen and there is no way to control the vent system or radio. My radio is stuck on a station I do not want to hear, and the blower is in the full cold position. I need to roll down my windows at times to warm up. I have always feared something like this would happen but was assured when I purchased the truck that it was an unlikely scenario. What must be done to repair it, and can I get around it until then?

-Michael in Redwood Falls, MN The modern features in today’s vehicles are convenient and give us a feel of luxury even in the least expensive of car models. The dash screen in many models now controls several systems and some of them are designed with knobs which are plain old switches so that in the event of a failure in the screen they can still be controlled. With the touch screen you are out of luck. A shop will have to diagnose and repair it. Many times, it is just the monitor screen but sometimes is also the module behind it. Many people have had great luck with used parts when the cost of new is remarkably high.

-Bill in Madison, SD If the diagnosis is correct, then the symptoms you are having are aligned with the problem. Active fuel management works by deactivating certain valve lifters which effectively shut off their corresponding cylinders. The engine computer handles this operation based on engine load. When this system starts to have problems do to wear or lack of oil system care, you can have several symptoms all the way down to total engine failure. Your engine has lasted a long time. We see a number of these in our shop which have failed camshafts and lifters with fewer miles, and in a few cases the engine can be torn down and repaired but many times the engines need to be replaced. Metal contamination in the oil system and cylinder wear necessitate larger repairs.
