Collaborate to increase your success rate -By Harvey Mackay The late Nora Ephron was a famous writer of essays and screenplays.

Working on a movie, Ephron said, is a collaborative effort.

“When you deliver a script, it’s like delivering a great big beautiful plain pizza, the one with only cheese and tomatoes,” Ephron said. “And then you give it to the director, and the director says, ‘I love this pizza. I am willing to commit to this pizza. But I really think this pizza should have mushrooms on it.’

“And you say, ‘Mushrooms! Of course! I meant to put mushrooms on the pizza! Why didn’t I think of that? Let’s

put some on immediately.’”

Next, someone else comes along and suggests green peppers are just what your pizza needs, and you agree. Then along comes someone else who suggests anchovies – and that one causes an argument. And what you end up with is a pizza with everything.

Sometimes it’s great. Sometimes it’s just the thing. And sometimes you kick yourself for allowing someone to put green peppers on it, because they overpowered everything else and ruined the pie.

That, Ephron said, is how collaboration works.

Famous movie director Steven Spielberg has a similar take on collaboration: “When I was a kid, there was no collaboration; it’s you with a camera bossing your friends around.

But as an adult, flimmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these flims by yourself.”

Collaboration is defined as individuals working together for a common purpose to achieve business benefit. Collaboration is crucial for business.

For proof, look at Procter & Gamble in the early 2000s. The company’s share price was down 50 percent. According to Rick Lash in the Ivey Business Journal, productivity had plateaued and the

company’s innovation success rate – the percentage of new products that reached financial objectives – was stuck around an “unsatisfactory 35 percent.”

The company’s new CEO at the time, A.G. Lafley, was determined to make P&G known as the company that “collaborates, inside and out, better than any company in the world.” An analysis revealed that most of the company’s most profitable innovations came through collaboration, either internally across business units or externally with outside researchers.

So Lafley established 20 crossfunctional “communities of practice” within the company and said that half of P&G’s products, ideas and technologies would come from external sources.

Result: By 2008, P&G improved its research and development productivity by nearly 60 percent and more than doubled its innovation success rate while lowering Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Collaboration is different from teamwork. According to an article from AAIM, the global community of information professionals, collaboration at the conceptual level involves: Awareness: We become part of a working entity with shared purpose.

Motivation: We drive to gain consensus in problem solving or development.

Self-synchronization: We decide as individuals when things need to happen.

Participation: We participate in collaboration and we expect others to participate.

Mediation: We negotiate and we collaborate together and find a middle point.

Reciprocity: We share and we expect sharing in return through reciprocity.

Reflection: We think and we consider alternatives.

Engagement: We proactively engage rather than wait and see.

“Collaboration relies on openness and knowledge sharing but also some level of focus and accountability on the part of the

business organization,” AAIM says.

There is power in collaboration. It is a great way for companies to work together to achieve success in unexpected ways. In today’s fast-paced marketplace it is crucial to develop mutually beneficial partnerships to leverage creativity, experience and resources. This allows companies and individuals to innovate much more quickly and create solutions to problems.

For example, LEGO, the toy company that produces a variety of interlocking plastic building blocks, signed on with NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, to help familiarize children with real-world challenges in space.

Through the Space Act Agreement, LEGO and NASA entered into a threeyear collaboration to promote technology, engineering and mathematics, and to work on practical applications. In addition, astronauts use LEGO models and toys in the International Space Station to demonstrate scientific concepts and perform experiments. NASA has also provided LEGO with ideas and educational

Obituaries Rita J. Poepping

Rita J. Poepping, age 83 of Albany formerly of St. Cloud, died Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Mother of Mercy Campus of Care, Albany.

M a s s of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, August 26, 2015 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery Rita was born November 28, 1931 in Melrose, MN to Bernard and Elizabeth (Wenker) Bussmann. She was married to Jerome Poepping on September 23, 1952 in Melrose, MN. Rita worked on the lunch staff at St. Cloud School District 742 for many years. She was a member of St. Anthony’s

Catholic Church and the Christian Women.

Rita enjoyed Crocheting, knitting, baking bread and cookies, golfing, bowling, bingo and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her 9 children, Gary (Judy) of Brooklyn Center, MN, Beverly Delong of St. Cloud, Sandy (Mike) Cruzen of St. Cloud, Debra (Paul) Theisen of St. Cloud, Pamela (Greg) Schultz of Rice, MN, James (Mary) of St. Cloud, Robert of St. Cloud, Brian of Sartell and Shannon (Mike) Anderson of Clear Lake; 31 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bernard Bussmann, Jr. of Melrose and Edward Bussmann of Melrose; sisters Cecilia Hansen of Sauk Centre, Lorraine Kraker of Melrose, Doris Peterson of Sauk Centre and Betty Lou Goebel of Freeport.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Jerome; daughter, Sharon Harris; sisters, Anna Mae Morrison and Bernice Thieler and an infant son.

James “Jim” V. Wimmer James “Jim” V. Wimmer, age 71, of Albany, MN passed away at home on August 21, 2015 surrounded by family.

A public gathering in memory of Jim will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM Friday, August 28 at Seven Dolors Church in Albany, MN. Funeral service to

Born in Melrose, MN to Joe and Eleanor Wimmer, Jim graduated from Albany High School in 1961. He served in the U. S. Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968. Jim successfully

operated a second generation dairy farm outside of Albany. Once retired from farming, Jim enjoyed part-time employment with Kozy Kab where he made many friends while driving elderly and disabled clients to medical appointments. Jim was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Family was the focal point of his life. In his free time Jim was an avid fisherman who spent summers angling Lake Edward and winters spear fishing a secret hot spot. He was also a skilled card player and sportsman who never let facts get in the way of a good story.

He is survived by the love of his life, Joyce (Welle) Wimmer whom he married in 1964. Six children Juli Mader (Paul) of St. Cloud, MN, Amy Wimmer (Steve Kennedy) of Edina, MN, Peter Wimmer (Teresa) of Albany MN, Maria Wimmer of Carbondale CO, Sarah Koshiol (Chad) of Minneapolis MN, Susan Pauling (Billy) of Eden Prairie MN; along with twelve grandchildren, Josh, Ashley, Nick, Nathan, Hailey, Henry, Gretchen, Norah, Presley, Pearse, Parker, Harris and his loyal Labrador retriever, Lady.

Jim is preceded in death by his daughter Carla Wimmer, parents Joe & Eleanor Wimmer, and in-laws Adalbert and Appolonia Welle.

Herbert L. “Herb” Schilling, age 95, formerly of Grey Eagle, died Friday, August 21, 2015 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, August 25 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Herbert LeRoy Schilling was born March 4, 1920 in Woodworth, North Dakota to Joseph and Mary (Barnard) Schilling.

After high school he worked at Cargill Manufacturing in Minneapolis. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in World War II from 1942 to 1945. After serving his country he returned to Minneapolis and worked as a city bus driver for nine years and then worked for Orfie and Sons for 32

Alvina A. Brang

Alvina A. Brang, age 100, of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 surrounded by her loving family, at the CentreCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian was held Saturday, August 22 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove and Rev. Marvin Enneking officiated.

Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Alvina Ann Zenzen was born August 29, 1914, in Elrosa, Minnesota to Joseph and Anna (Tschida) Zenzen. She attended Catholic School in Meire Grove through 8th grade. After school she took care of the neighborhood children by cooking and cleaning for their families before moving to the Twin Cities where she worked as a nanny for $1 per week. She returned to Meire Grove and married Alphonse Brang on June 1, 1937, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove, MN. The couple farmed between Melrose and Meire Grove for over 35 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, cooking, card playing (especially 500), and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alphonse on February 18, 1999; brothers and sisters, Andrew, Edward, and Clarence Zenzen, Mary Winning, Theresa Messer, Ann Bruce, Clara Pajewski, Veronica Kleve, Alma Welle, and Betty Hewitt.

years as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. In 1979 he moved to Grey Eagle. After retirement he worked part-time for a company that delivered trailers all over Minnesota and drove truck for Ewing Potato Farm. He had been a resident of CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie since, February of 2013.

As a young man he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In 1986 they went traveling in their RV. He loved dancing and playing music with his band in Texas. He also enjoyed woodcrafting. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, VFW Post 1140, and Operating Engineers Union, Local 49.

Herb is survived by his lifelong love of 49 years, Linda Rohde; six children, Gayle (Larry) Woodbury, Donald Schilling, Maureen (Rick) Bailey, Danette (Jim) Rogers, Kevin (Diane) Schilling, and Ken (Diane) Schilling; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald “Jerry” Schilling; son-in-law, Dick Madsen; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandy Madsen; son, Ronald Schillling; and Dino, his dog of 19 years.

Colette E. Von Wahlde Colette E. Von Wahlde, age 101 of Melrose, died peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman and Rev. Vincent Lieser concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Colette Elizabeth Hinnenkamp was born January 25, 1914 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Mary (Angelbeck) Hinnenkamp. On June 1, 1932 she married Henry Von Wahlde at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple farmed in Melrose Township until retiring in 1979. Since October of 2006 she had resided at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

Melvin M. Worms

M e l v i n M. Worms, age 92 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, August 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Knights of Columbus will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Melvin Mathew Worms was born June 21, 1923 in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Lambert and Agnes (Ellering) Worms. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Melrose High School in 1941. On October 8, 1951 he married Edna Wenker at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. Melvin was a hardworking dedicated farmer who spent his entire life working on their third generation century farm in Spring Hill Township.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society in Greenwald, and the Knights of Columbus Council #1633. Throughout his life, Melvin

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Edna Worms of Melrose; children, Donald (Marina) Worms of Hercules, California, Harvey (Janet) Worms of Eden Prairie, Diane Worms of Farmington, Joann (Russ) Olson of Breckenridge, Rosie (Tim) Beier of Paynesville, Lisa (Dave) Sarne of Eagan, and Jon (Laurie) Worms of Greenwald; 15 grandchildren, Nathalia (Daniel), Philip (Natalia), Sarah, Matthew, Mariah, Chad, Eric, Chris (Annie), Emily, Stephanie, Tony, Jessie, Michaela, Madison, and Carter; and two greatgrandchildren, Naya and Mateo; and brother, Ray Worms of Melrose.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert, Luverne, and Leonard Worms; and sisters, Lorraine Imdieke and Bernice Athmann.

Verna “Renee” Delores Gregory Verna “Renee” Delores Gregory, age 89, formerly of St. Cloud, MN, passed away peacefully at her daughters home in Glendale, AZ on Saturday, August 15, 2015 F u n e r a l services will be Friday, September 4, 2015 at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at the church on Friday. Interment will be in North Star Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. Arrangements with Benson Funeral Home, St. Cloud, MN. Renee was born September 2, 1925 in St. Cloud, MN to George and Clara (Katzner) Conrad. She graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School in 1942. Renee worked at Weidner’s Plumbing until her marriage to Kenneth Gregory in April 1948.

Renee and Ken raised 11 children on 23rd Ave. S. in St. Cloud. In 1964 she began working at the Germain Hotel. When the Germain closed she worked at the Anchor Inn in Waite Park.

Renee also worked at Northern Refrigeration and was store manager at South Side Grocery Store until her retirement in 1987. In 2000 she went back to work for Granite City Pawn Shop and worked until she was 88 years old, retiring only to move to Arizona. Renee was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, St.

Cloud VFW Post #4847 Auxiliary, Waite Park American Legion Post #428 Auxiliary.

Renee loved to read, paint, play scrabble, words with friends, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles. She also enjoyed traveling, especially road trips. Renee traveled thousands of miles with her children and grandchildren.

At the age of 60 she backpacked Europe for a month. Her bags were always packed and ready to go! Renee had a wonderful sense of adventure, a great sense of humor and a quick wit. Renee will always be remembered for her spirit and love of a party. Upsala Band to Sponsor Annual BackTo-School Brat Supper Sept. 2 The Upsala Area High School Band will be sponsoring a Brat Supper on Wednesday, September 2 from 4:307:30 p.m. in the Upsala High School cafeteria. The supper will include brat or hot dog, salad, chips, dessert and a beverage.

This is also the evening of the open house in the elementary where students

can come and meet their teachers.

The Upsala Band members, under the direction of Mrs. Denise Cheney, work hard to raise money for the tour that the concert band takes every two years. Proceeds from the Brat Supper will be put toward their next tour in the spring of 2016.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Touring Ag. Facilities; Renewable Energy Update; Crops Look Great The two committees in the Minnesota House that deal with agriculture will conduct a joint tour this week to view ag-related facilities around the state. The Policy Committee, which I chair, along with the Finance Committee, chaired by Rep. Rod Hamilton, will be on the road Tuesday and Wednesday to get a first-hand look at turkey processing facilities, the poultry testing lab in Willmar, along with a biodiesel refinery and an ethanol plant.

The first day we’ll visit the Jennie-O plant in Faribault, where workers were laid off during the height of the avian flu outbreak earlier this year. The plant is now ramping production back up, and workers are being called back. We’ll also swing through Austin for a stop at Hormel before heading to Albert Lea to visit a biodiesel refinery in that city.

After returning to St. Paul that evening, we’ll head out the second day to Willmar for a tour of the poultry testing lab. This facility was granted funding in the bonding bill for an upgrade so testing for the avian flu can be done right there in Willmar instead of having all samples sent to the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. Our tour will also visit the MinnWest Technology campus and the Jennie-O Turkey Store, both located in Willmar. The last stop Wednesday will be at an ethanol plant in Granite Falls.

It’s good for legislators to get a handson look at facilities impacted by legislation that we pass. For example, we dealt with the flu outbreak in poultry flocks this past session and it will be timely for us to be updated on the industry’s recovery and on progress being made in addressing a possible outbreak of the disease again this fall when migrating birds return to Minnesota.

Minnesota is not the only state to have imposed renewable energy mandates. Others have also passed legislation requiring a certain percentage of energy sales come from renewables.

According to the magazine STATE LEGISLATURES, one state, Hawaii, has even gone so far as to mandate that its utilities generate their total amount of electricity sales, that’s 100 percent, from renewables by the year 2045!

There has been push-back in some states against these mandates. The state of

New York announced it will not extend its renewable portfolio standard but will instead look for new ways to increase investments in this area. West Virginia became the first state to repeal a voluntary goal with legislation passed earlier this year.

And Kansas enacted a bill that changed its enforceable mandate, which many utilities had already met, into a non-binding goal.

In driving around the district, it’s amazing how good the crops look. Because of all the rain this summer, everything still looks lush and green. As an example, I traveled down Highway 4 from Meire Grove to Paynesville one day last week, and the corn and soybeans along the road were truly impressive. Minnesota is the garden spot this year, with our crops rated higher than any other state. Cool temps over the weekend have some concerned about an early frost, which would certainly hurt these crops. We need warmer weather to return for another few weeks to finish off what could be record yields all across the state.

Sometime in the last two weeks someone drove what appears to be an ATV into his corn field in two separate locations along County Road 41. Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

August 23, 2015: At approximately 1706 hours the Todd County Sheriffs Office received a report from Andrew Gravdahl who ran in the ditch on County Road 19 and hit a sign. Gravdahl was uninjured in the accident and his 2010 GMC pickup received passenger side damage.

One of the major influences in our society today is the emphasis on being “politically correct.” The threat or possibility of offending anyone about anything at any time has silenced many of us. We fear that we will be condemned or criticized. Unfortunately, many Christians now remain silent when opportunities to speak of or for their faith arise. Rather than defending the gospel we have become fearful of offending others even if their values are wrong and beliefs unscriptural.

Being politically correct was not a problem for David. In fact, it was the exact opposite. He was not ashamed to speak boldly and publicly about God’s involvement in his life. He had no hesitancy or fear to talk about his relationship with God. Once at a very special occasion in front or a large crowd he said, “I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly!” He

put his faith on public display.

He had been through an intense struggle with God. It must have been both long and difficult. But finally, his patience and perseverance, his respect and reverence for God were rewarded and his prayer was finally answered.

As he reflected on God’s goodness and thought about His mercy and blessings, he could not contain himself. “I speak of your faithfulness - Your salvation, love and truth,” he proclaimed. “I do not seal...I could not conceal...my gratitude.”

If we were taking about this event today, we would say that David “gave his testimony to a large gathering.” However, it was not the size of the group that mattered to David. It was his need “to proclaim” God’s salvation and faithfulness to others. He could not be contained when it came to sharing his faith.

Melvin K. Jackson, 76, of Sauk Centre passed into the spirit world August 18, 2015 at the CentraCare Hospital in St. Cloud, MN; he had an ongoing battle with liver & kidney failure.

Mel, Walking Eagle, Chief, Z, full of fun, good humor, mischief, and daring, was the “Kokopelli” of his tribe. He had been an escort for “Tony’s Tours” keeping the casino runners entertained.

His farewell on each trip was “Tony thanks you, and I thank you for the new moccasins for all my children.” According to Mel, there were three B’s; beer, brandy & bingo. Ever a charmer, Mel believed in replenishing the tribe, he had 4 wives and 17 children.

Mel Anaquat (Cloud) was born April 6, 1939 in White Earth, MN. Having lost his mother at age 5, he was sent to American Indian Boarding schools in Wahpeton, ND, and Pipestone, MN, here he was immersed in European-American culture and forced to abandon his Native American identity, culture, and language - this made him all the

more rebellious. He eventually turned his energy into creativity, producing beautiful dream catchers, snuff drums, earrings, drawings, and key chains; all of Ojibway color & nature. Attending Pow-Wows, he would tear up at every entry, so proud of his Native American people. Mel, true to his heritage was a natural at hunting & fishing, gardening, cloud visions, and communing with the animals.

Mel graduated from Akeley High School, the Greer Tech Institute in Chicago, and White Bear Community College. During his working years, he had been employed as a landscaper, truck driver, auto mechanic, and a free-lance handy man. A “Jack-of-all trades” he could repair most anything.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer & Iona and sister, Leona.

Mel is survived by his sister, Betty Price, brother, Elmer, Jr., children, Jackie T., Debbie, Melvin, Jr., Jeremy, Matthew, Klye, Margarita, Audrey, Leona, as well as other children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of life for Mel will be at Diamond Point on Sauk Lake, September 13, 2015. Visitation starting at 12:00 pm, traditional outdoor service at 2:00 pm, followed by a feast. Please bring your Mel stories and jokes.

F u n e r a l Services were held Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Peace United Church, Long Prairie for Darlene J. Chase, age 80, who passed away on Friday, August 21, 2015 at Valley View Assisted Living, Long Prairie.

Rev. Gary Taylor officiated and burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Darlene was born in Clarissa on April 29, 1935 to Michael and Anna (Lapitz) Sutton. She grew up in Clarissa. She was baptized at the United Methodist Church in Clarissa on April 4, 1937 by Upton E. Dahle. Darlene graduated from Clarissa High School on June 4, 1954.

She married Norman Chase on June 9, 1954 at the United Methodist Church in Clarissa. She and Norman lived on a farm west of Bertha and in 1955 they moved to Long Prairie. She was a housewife and a mother. When her children were in school she worked for Wilbur Shinabarger at Jack & Jill grocery store. Later she worked for Marie’s Cafe’ as a dish washer until 2003 when she retired to take care of Norman who had cancer.

She enjoyed gardening, canning fruits, vegetables and pickles, embroidering gifts for family and friends, reading and putting jigsaw puzzles together.

Darlene was an active member of the United Methodist Church (now Peace United Church) where she sang in the choir, was president of the women’s group, wired many cones for Christmas wreaths, worked at the annual bizarre, helped Norman with janitor work. She was for several years Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School and Bible School teacher, Lay Delegate to Annual Conference, lay leader, served as Financial

Secretary from 1981 to 2011. She also served on many other committees. She was also Secretary-Treasurer for Long Prairie Evergreen Cemetery Association from 1971 to 2011.

Darlene is survived by her children, Sharlene (Larry) Schroeder, Long Prairie; Willis (Gwen) Chase, Grove City; Michael (Karen) Chase, Long Prairie; Jon (Angela Manteuffel) Chase, Litchfield; and Harley (Kristi) Chase, Garfield; sister Elaine (James) Kingston, Long Prairie; brother George (Thea) Sutton, Aberdeen, Maryland; nieces and nephews; ten grandchildren, Cory (Gina) Chase, Amy (Michael) Schroeder; Matthew (Kristle) Chase; Chrystal Odin, Ashley Chase; Rachael Chase; Lance Chase; Nora Chase; Morgan Chase; and Brenan Chase; great-grandchildren, Mekayla Schroeder; Shelby Chase; Colton Schroeder and Conor Rothenberger; and two great-grandchildren on the way; step grandchildren, Kimberly (Troy) Dierkhising; Timothy (Stacey Larson) Schroeder; and step-great-grandchildren, Abbigail Schroeder; and Farrah and Eden Dierkhising.

Burnhamville Township July 28, 2015 These minutes are not approved.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held July 28, 2015 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky, Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Erv Herdering and Ervin Muellner.

The minutes from the regular meeting of June 30, 2015 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Thompson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the board received a letter from Todd County Public Works on the delays in the permits of Pillsbury Bridge, a notice of District 8 meeting on August 19, and a letter concerning bank securities.

Supervisors will blade the Buck Lake access.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5143 through 5153: Rev. $590.54; R&B $10,747.19. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed. The board questioned the DNR permit bill. Clerk will check with public works on this new charge.

In the road report the contractor has completed dust control spraying. Culvert on 321st Ave minimum maintenance area was repaired. He will continue with repair list and maintenance grading and graveling.

There was also a complaint of a water puddle on 162nd St. Board will

contact state highway department to cut ditch weeds by intersection of 150th St. and State 28.

The board got one of three easement from property owners along the Pillsbury Bridge.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $120,943.41. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on August 25, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

The finance report was read and approved on a motion by Beau Krueger and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich. Upon vote motion carried. Checks number 7421 thru 7429 were approved for payment on a motion by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Anna Payne.

Upon vote motion carried.

Street lights in town were discussed. Motion was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich to change to LED bulbs. Motion approved upon vote.

Word Search Answers from August 20

Central MN Tractor Club requested a beer license for the Heritage Days on August 22 and 23. Request granted on a motion by Kevin Wunderlich and seconded by Beau Krueger. All voted in favor. Motion carried.

The swing set at the hall needs some repair. Motion was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Anna Payne to have the work done.

Snow plow needs inspection.

Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet.

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the next council meeting will be held on August 31, 2015 at 7 p.m.

Dorothy Strassburg, Burtrum City Clerk Grey Eagle City July 14, 2015 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 14th day of July, 2015 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Ralph Muellner, Roland Ahrendt and Joe Arnzen. There were no council members absent.

Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Mark and Mary Monroe and Mike Fogel.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the minutes of the June 9, 2015 meeting as written. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council read a letter written by Ken Messer regarding the culvert extension that he put in without a permit. The addition to the culvert is a drain tile that is of smaller size than the culvert itself.

The council remains firm that this culvert extension is to be removed and the ditch is to be restored to its original state.

The following building permits were discussed: 1. Del Uecker was issued a building permit for a front step with cement.

2. Ken Messer, in his letter, asked for tin on the shed on his rental property. No permit will be issued until all open projects are completed.

3. Ken Messer, in his letter, asked for deck and patio pads. This permit was tabled until a time that Mr. Messer can attend a council meeting to discuss this further as there is no indication as to where the deck and patio pads are to be installed.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2015-08, A Resolution Accepting a $15,000 Donation from the Grey

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve Resolution No. 2015-09, A Resolution Accepting a $300 Donation from Swanville Dollars for Scholars for Fire Equipment. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Chico obtained two quotes for a generator for the west lift station. Jim’s Electric was a verbal quote for approximately $23,000 and a quote from Ellingson’s for approximately $16,000. This generator would ensure that when there is a power outage, the lift stations at the west lift will continue working.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the purchase of a generator for the west lift station from Ellingson’s for approximately $16,000, as well as the installation of a cement pad for it to be placed on. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon roll call vote, the council voted as follows: Roland Ahrendt: aye, Ralph Muellner: nay, Thom Muellner: aye, Joe Arnzen : aye, Jim Gohman: aye. Motion carried.

2. A quote from Cutting Edge Tree Service for the removal of trees behind the fire hall. It was the consensus of the council to not remove the trees at this time.

3. The temporary employee is finished but would come in if needed.

4. Chico informed the council on a gate valve that was missing the

cover on Maple Street. He found a replacement in the shop but the line is now full of water and dirt. The company installing the gas lines will vacuum out the pipe.

5. Chico informed the council that there are three resident’s curb stops that are underneath the tar.

The council conducted the six month review for Chico. Things have been going well.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to increase the pay rate for the maintenance supervisor a dollar per hour effective with the current pay period. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed wages for the 2016 budget.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the GEMFest Liquor License for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

There were no yard clean ups for council consideration.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve a $250 donation to the Initiative Foundation. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The clerk informed the council that Minnesota Power is doing pole inspections in the city. There is a line that runs from the fire hall to the siren that is attached to the power pole. If the line remains attached to the power pole, it would require paying a fee and entering into a contract with Minnesota Power. The clerk was instructed to do some research on prices for a contract with Minnesota Power as well as what it would cost just to move the line off the pole to a new location.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to schedule a work session for Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 6:00 p.m., to meet with Chase Johnson from Johnson Jet-Line to discuss the recent jetting and televising that was done on the city sewer mains.

The clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utility bills as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the various funds transfers as follows: $25,386.58 from the Capital Projects Fund to the Sewer Fund, $748.26 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $87.41 from the General Fund of which $27.91 goes to the Water Fund and $59.50 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities and $113.00 from the Sewer Fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include payment of the following additional items: $4,700 to Dennis Bacon, $1,785.03 to Minnesota Power and $6,000 to Central Minnesota Credit Union. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to adjourn at 8:37 p.m.

The next regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 in council chambers.

Thrivent Financial is hosting a free educational workshop on Social Security on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Little Falls Senior Center, 510 7th St. NE, Little Falls.
