Be inspired to be your best self -By Harvey Mackay I recently came across this wonderful poem

by Nancye Sims, “A Creed to Live By.” It captures life’s challenges in a very inspirational fashion, and I hope you learn as much from it as I have.

D o n ' t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others.

It is because we are different that each of us is special.

In our materialistic society, there will always be people who have a bigger house, nicer car and so on. Get over it. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything.

They just make the best of everything.

Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

Anytime is a perfect time to set your goals for the year, for the decade or for the rest of your life. After all, if you don’t know what you want to achieve, how will you know when you get there? Goals not only give you more than a reason to get up in the morning; they are an incentive to keep you going all day. Achieving goals produces significant accomplishments.

Don't take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them life is meaningless.

Focus on what is important to you. The subtitle to one of my books is “Do what you love. Love what you do.” And remember the people who mean the most to you too.

Don't let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

The present is when you can change your life. Mother Teresa said it best, “Yesterday is

gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”

Don't give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

One of my lessons when I speak to corporate audiences is believe in yourself even when no one else does. Who says that you’re not tougher and better and smarter and harder working and more able than your competition?

It doesn’t matter if they say you can’t do it.

The only thing that matters is if you say it.

Don't be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.

No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. The important point is to admit your mistakes, learn from them and move on.

Don't be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.

One of the reasons we admire people who take risks is that most of us are scared stiff at the prospect of taking risks ourselves. No risk, no success.

Don't shut love out of your life by saying it's impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give love. The fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Love never asks, “What can I get?” It asks, “What can I give?” Ever notice how poets talk about love? It’s usually about the other person.

If we all care about others, that means someone is caring about us too.

Don't dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be without hope is to be without purpose.

I often joke that it takes years to become an overnight success. But it starts with a dream.

My dream was to own a factory. I wasn’t even sure what kind of product I’d make, or exactly where it would be. But I pictured myself walking the factory floor, talking to workers.

The pile of broken-down machines I bought might have looked more like a nightmare at the time. But dreams come true – with a lot of wide-awake work.

Don't run through life so fast that you forget not only where you've been, but also where you're going. Life is not a race, but a journey to be savored each step of the way.

Every day is a gift! That’s why it’s called the present!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Gatherings

It was common for neighbors and relatives to get together at someone's home to accomplish a task that required assistance from larger numbers of people. Some earlier examples of these gatherings would include barn raising, corn shucking, thrashing and butchering.

The gatherings were spoken of in relation to the task performed, but it actually was a reason to gather with people that didn't live in your house. In earlier years the conversations and ideas were primarily confined to one's own home and there was a need to communicate with others to “refresh your mind.” New ideas just seem to happen while performing your regular daily occupation. It is great to be able to share those ideas with others and have them share their ideas with you. These gatherings were a great help to women with their food preparation, gardening, home making and child raising duties. The guys would get ideas about where to sell extra farm products, crop raising, machinery repair and health care for the farm animals. There was also the advantage of accomplishing the needed job, such as getting the barn built or the corn shucked.

These gatherings allowed people to share some of their problems and find that others had similar problems, which lifted the burden of carrying the load yourself. It offered the opportunity to laugh, which may not have been common in the home work environment. It also allowed the opportunity for contact with friends, which in early years was definitely needed.

In later years, these gatherings became less common. The farmers bought machinery to do

the work and they hired skilled laborers to build their barn. They discovered farming ideas from the media. They had the butcher shop do the butchering. Ladies can find any solution for their homemaking needs from the media. They can get all kinds of advice about child raising on TV, but in some cases the ideas are from experts who have never raised kids.

Today there are a limited number of these gatherings. In most cases these gatherings involve family members. Sometimes these gatherings are to make deer sausage or jerky. Another occasion may be to prepare and process sweet corn or sauerkraut.

These projects usually require a large amount of space and the use of a lot of pots and pans. As a result, it seems better to mess up one area, rather than two or three.

We appreciate the help from those that assisted and attended our recent garage sale.

Yes, it is good to accomplish these projects, but the real advantage is being able to spend time with those who make your own life better. It's a good thing.

Several individuals have asked if I knew how to make sauerkraut. What we did was to rub the cabbage across our kraut cutter, or any other method to thinly slice the cabbage. Get a couple of clean plastic 5 gallon pails and a crusher, which could be the end of a 2 by 4, some canning salt and a couple of waterproof plastic bags. Shred the cabbage, put a couple inches of the cabbage in the pail, add a little salt and pound it down with the end of the 2 by 4. Taste and if it's salty add more cabbage and if it tastes like cabbage, add a little more salt. Keep adding cabbage, salt , tasting and the crushing until the pail is about ¾ full. Put water in the bag and place it on top of the pail to seal it.

There is a lot of fear out in our society. It does not matter what the situation or circumstance I find myself in, I find myself talking to someone about the world and all that is going on. I want to encourage all the readers of this article; fear is not a godly characteristic!

Before you object, let me explain. It is good to fear fire, or freezing temperatures, or bad people but to have a “spirit” of fear comes from Satan himself. 2 Timothy 1:7 “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

My wife and I have never been wealthy; however, there have been times in our life that we have had extra. It was then that I did not need to trust God, I could take care of it; then one of us needed dental work done or the car needed work and the extra was gone. Paul has said in Philippians 4:11-13 “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12I know how to be brought low, and

I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”

Donald B. “Donny” Gieske

Donald B. “Donny” Gieske, age 58 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Donny’s Life will be held on Sunday, August 29 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Greenwald Pub in Greenwald.

Donald Bernard Gieske was born November 20, 1962 in Melrose, Minnesota to Valentine and Louise (Tiemann) Gieske. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1981. Donny worked with his dad on the farm for a number of years before working at Midwest Machining in Melrose. He later worked with his brother on the farm. Donny enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, mowing the lawn, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and his dogs. He enjoyed all types of music, listening to KASM radio, and liked to have a good time, especially when it came to dancing.

Survivors include his significant other of 12 years, Lelia Ramthun of Sauk Centre; Lelia’s children, Richie Ramthun of Litchfield, Ryan Ramthun (Faith) of Litchfield, and Brittany (Josh) Daddino of Brainerd; Lelia’s grandchildren, Kinnley, Darrell, and one on the way; brothers and sister, Randy (Lynn) Gieske of Sauk Centre, Ron (Kristi) Gieske of Sauk Centre, Debra Gieske of Melrose, and Bob (Cheri) Gieske of Melrose; 11 nieces and nephews; and seven great-nieces and nephews with one on the way.

Donny was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Billy Gieske; and sister, Judy Gieske.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Joan Wettstein, 78, of Long Prairie, passed away on August 20, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 25, 2021at St. Mary’s of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie with Fr. Mitchell Bechtold officiating.

Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Joan Mary was born September 19, 1942, in rural Browerville to Anthony & Olivia (Klimek) Pampy. She married Norman Wettstein at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Browerville on September 24, 1962. Joan worked at Austin Mutual Insurance Company in Minneapolis, the Sears catalog store in Long Prairie, Todd County Oil for many years, Mobil and Holiday. She enjoyed gardening, canning, watching birds, and her cats, especially Angel. In her younger years she was an accomplished bowler.

She is survived by her siblings: Edna (David Sternitzke) Pampy of Santa Clara, CA, John (Barb) Pampy of Ronan, MT, niece Jennifer Pampy, great nieces Nicole Marie and Emma Leigh and many cousins.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents and husband Norman.

Lenore M. Pallansch

Lenore M. “Norie” Pallansch, age 73 of Grey Eagle, passed away after a long struggle with health issues on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota with her family by her side.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 28 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Lenore Mary Frey was born June 4, 1948 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Albert and Eleanore (Deering) Frey. She graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls and furthered her education by earning her bachelor’s degree in social work from Moorhead State University.

Norie served for three years in the Peace Corps and also worked at the Minnesota Special Education Programs for three years. She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Pallansch in 1982 in Long Prairie, Minnesota. Bob and Norie owned and operated the Double R Bar and Restaurant in Grey Eagle since 1982.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Norie enjoyed working crossword and sudoku puzzles, playing golf, BINGO, and darts on her dart league, watching the Young and the Restless, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Pallansch of Grey Eagle; children, Robert Pallansch II of Grey Eagle and Kristin (Brandon) DeFoe of Grey Eagle; grandchildren, Liam and Carson DeFoe; brother and sisters, Mary (Russ) Cichy of Madison, Wisconsin, Beverly (Larry) Kautz of Pine Island, Dorothy (Larry) Lampert of Pierz, Barbara (Dave) Brown of Brainerd, Lynn (Lee) VanDenBroeke of Omaha, Nebraska, Albert (Mary Ann) Frey of Racine, and Sandy (Tim) Statema of Lincoln; and many loving relatives and friends.

Norie was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Patricia Frey.

Melvin R. Larson, 87 year old resident of Upsala, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at his residence.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 30, 2021 at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN with Rev. Steve Weihsmann officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Donald J. Maciej

Donald J. Maciej, 87 year old resident of Elmdale, MN, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at his residence.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 23, 2021 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN, with Fr. David Grundman officiating.

Burial was at St. Edwards Parish Cemetery.

Donald James Maciej was born on June 11, 1934 in Bowlus, MN to the late Leo, Sr. and Jennie (Sobiech) Maciej. He graduated from Little Falls High School and entered into service with the U.S. Army in 1954, serving overseas during the Korean Conflict. Donald was honorably discharged on November 22, 1955.

He was united in marriage to Jeanette Jendro on November 25, 1958 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale. Together they farmed on the family farm in Elmdale and raised their family.

Donald farmed his entire life and was self-reliant in fixing his own machinery as well as making wood to heat his home. He cherished his time spent with his family and was known to blow on a harmonica now and then. Donald was active at his church and active in St. Edwards Choir. He was on the Elmdale Creamery Board and was also a member of CBI (Creamery Blending). Donald served as commander of the Bowlus American Legion Post #642.

Donald is survived by his wife, Jeanette; sons, Duane (Teri) of Somerset, WI and Pat (Ann) of Holdingford, MN; daughter, Carol (Dan) Weber of Cold Spring, MN; grandsons, Zac of Swanville, MN, Adam (Sara) of Sartell, MN, Alex and friend Katie of Duluth, MN, Chaz Walls of Somerset, WI, and Miles Walls of Somerset; great-grandchildren, Ethan Walls, Madison Walls, and Landon Maciej; brothers, Alvin and friend, Doreen of Coon Rapids, MN, Harvey (Mary) of Wrenshall, MN, Jim (Ann Marie) of Annandale, MN, and Dennis and friend, Kathy of Elko, MN; sisters-in-law, Odele Maciej of Rice, MN, Collette Maciej of Zimmerman, MN, Jeanne Maciej of Austin, TX, and Chris Maciej of Elk River, MN. By Roger Lahr Greetings to all, I am a former union man, a once proud JFK Democrat, possessing and supporting the general political philosophies of this great leader. Something changed within my party and my country over time. No longer do you ever hear the famous quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” If Kennedy were alive today, he would be hated by the left. He would be considered someone who had the ideology of a conservative Republican. I did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me.

Within our diverse population, we have a significant number of our fellow citizens who believe that the government should support them in all facets of their lives. Free health care, free education, free housing, free transportation, various free food programs, FREE, FREE, Free, etc. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from someone else. The “government” does NOT have any money…The dollars come from those of us who pay taxes. There is a vast difference between helping and enabling. We have safety net programs for those truly in need, and rightfully so, but all the “FREE” programs are unsustainable.

Accident: August 22, 2021: At 14:15 hours a motorcycle accident was reported on County Road 47 South of Grey Eagle. A 1998 Harley Davidson was south on County Road 47 when the driver lost control going into the east ditch, the motorcycle rolled once. The driver was air lifted from th scene. Melrose Ambulance and Grey Eagle Rescue assisted a the scene.

Crash: August 15, 2021: At approximately 1:00 a.m. responded to the report of a truck that had crashed into a tree on 2nd Street NE in St. Stephen. Upon arrival, Saint Stephen Fire Department was in the process of extricating the driver from the truck. The driver was inside on the floor of the truck. Deputy Simon spoke to several people in the area and determined that the driver of the truck, Jerry Puchalla, 23, of Bowlus had been at a housewarming party. He became upset and tried to leave. The others tried to prevent him from leaving without success. He left at a high rate of speed and made it approximately 430 feet down the road where he then crashed into a tree.

Once he was extricated, he was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Ambulance. Deputy Garret Okerstrom met with Puchalla at the hospital, where a warrant was obtained for a sample of his blood. The investigation did reveal evidence of alcohol consumption and the case will be pending the return of the sample. Puchalla was left in the care of the hospital.

Theft: August 9, 2021: Responded to the Freeport Softball Park for a theft report. Sometime over the previous weekend thieves broke in and took a 1986 Honda 200 TRX that was used to drag the ball fields. The ATV is described as being mostly red with some white and blue. There are no suspects, and we have no idea who might be so desperate for transportation that they would take what some might consider to be an antique.

That being said it’s an important piece of equipment for the softball park.

Theft: August 13, 2021: Took a theft in Melrose Twp. The caller reported that they were missing two paddle boats from their address on Sylvia View Rd. The boats have been missing since approximately May of this year. The paddle boats are worth $500 a piece.

By Joe Wilwerding The American Legion Post 101 from Melrose Minnesota would like to commend the great students of the fifth and sixth grade of the Freeport Sacred Heart School for the patronage and honor they showed our National Guard and our fallen comrades at the veterans cemetery at Camp Ripley on May 7th.

On May 7th at 0900 hours the 5th and 6th grade students and their teachers, 5th grade Gina Benson, 6 grade Sister Janine Braun boarded a bus at the Freeport Sacred Heart School. They traveled the 50 minute ride to Camp Ripley arriving 0950 hours checking in at 1000 hours at the post main gate. Then it was off to the environmental center where they were given an extensive educational briefing on the wildlife and the interaction of wildlife on Camp Ripley by Sergeant Josh Pennington who was very interesting. It truly was very impressive to watch the students interact with Sergeant Pennington.

1100 hours it was time for latrine break and off to the Camp Ripley museum. We were greeted by the curator, Doug Thompson. After a warm welcome and a short briefing Doug gave the green light for all the students to interact on a hands-on basis throughout the museum. It was wonderful to watch the students inquisitively explore this wonderful military museum. 1210 hours off to the mess hall for lunch. 1250 latrine break and then to the veterans cemetery. We were warmly greeted by Sergeant First Class Eric Sogge, cemetery administrator. We were then escorted to the flag assembly area where the students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang God Bless America. We listened to the voices of the students giving honor to this hallowed ground where veterans lie in eternal peace. Truly, this was a stirring moment as it brought tears to the

After witnessing this wonderful moment it was off to the committal hall where there were five murals, one for every branch of the service. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. This is known as the Veterans Art Monument. The explanations of the murals and the interactions from the students questions with First Sergeant Eric Sogge was inspirational.

1340 hours it was time to load. We headed back to Sacred Heart School completing this journey. At this time all of the students were presented a commemorative US flag lapel pin in memory of their patriotic journey.

American Legion sponsorship and funding from two wonderful anonymous donors from Freeport made this outside the classroom education possible.

The six escorting Legion members were Dave Humbert, Richard Koll, Allen Notch, Richard Cross, and Joe Wilwerding and representing the Upsala American Legion, David Finken would like to commend these amazing and inspiring students for the honor they displayed. May God bless them, their teachers and America.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a general question about air bag safety. I heard you talking on a recent episode of Under The Hood about the testing of air bags and how they were tested differently in America and Overseas markets. The difference was in America they are tested with the use of a seat belt and Overseas sometimes without. I have never had an airbag deploy in my vehicle and I don’t look forward to ever having it occur, but I want to know what to expect if it does and what I can do to prevent injury. Personally, I would rather not have airbags in my cars, but it doesn’t look like they are going away. What is your take on people who ride with their feet on the dash or a pet in their laps?

-Mike in Sweetwater, Texas Dear Mike, Air bags are great inventions that have saved many lives but if misused can cause severe injury. Every car made has a guide for proper air bag use printed in the owner’s manual and it needs to be followed. Proper distance between you and the airbag is crucial as well as seat belt use. Follow the guidelines in the manual and never place anything between you and the airbag. Anything placed in this zone will become a projectile, including a pet and is extremely dangerous. As for feet on the dash, an inflating air bag can cause irreparable damage to them.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My car has been overheating and the shop I have been going to can’t seem to find the cause. It only seems to overheat when I drive it and I can’t seem to find a pattern with it that I can use to have the shop duplicate the problem.

On occasion I will find the heater stops blowing hot air and at the same time the temp gauge increases into the red zone. If I pull over and let the engine idle for a while it will cool down and the heat will come back. It has also done this at idle before. They want to replace head gaskets, but they aren’t sure if they are bad. Is there anything I can do to find out for sure before we tear it apart and possibly don’t find anything wrong with it?

A simple test can be done to check for these gases and if any traces are found you know there is an issue with a gasket or something more severe. Valuable tax benefits await those who save backto-school shopping receipts With a new school year on the horizon, parents and caregivers are reminded to save receipts on school supply purchases in order to claim valuable K-12 tax benefits when filing their taxes next year.

“Purchasing school supplies is an investment that nearly every parent or caregiver in Minnesota makes on a yearly basis,” said Revenue Commissioner Robert Doty. “Saving receipts from these purchases, including distance learning needs, and claiming the K-12 Education Credit or Subtraction will help save money or increase a refund when it comes time to file taxes.”

Two tax benefits can help Minnesota families pay expenses related to their child’s education: the refundable K-12 Education Credit (income limits apply) and the K-12 Education Subtraction (no income limits).

These programs reduce the tax parents pay and could deliver a larger refund when filing a Minnesota income tax return. To qualify, the purchases must be for educational services or required materials. The child must be attending kindergarten through 12th grade at a public, private, or home school and meet other qualifications.

Last year, more than 33,000 families received the K-12 Education Credit and saved an average of $250. Nearly 190,000 families received the K-12 Education Subtraction.

Save those receipts Remember to save your receipts to claim the credit or subtraction. Most expenses for educational instruction or materials qualify, including: • Paper, Pens and notebooks, Textbooks, Rental or purchases of educational equipment such as musical instruments • Computer hardware (hotspots, modems, and routers) and educational software (up to $200 for the subtraction and $200 for the credit) * • After-school tutoring and educational summer camps taught by a qualified instructor *Fees for internet service do not qualify Household Income for the K-12 Education Credit Number of qualifying children in K-12

additional child Taxpayers who are not required to file an income tax return must do so in order to claim a refund for any eligible education credit.

K-12 Education Subtraction There are no income limits to qualify for the education subtraction. Most parents qualify. Parents can claim the K-12 Subtraction for tuition paid to private schools or college courses used to satisfy high school graduation requirements.

Burnhamville Township • June 29, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held June 29, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of May 25, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters about taxes received an update on Planning and Zoning, web design offer and clean-up day review.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the ditch mowing bid from Mike Berscheit. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Sup. Berscheit abstained. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6110 through 6124: Rev. $26,630.92; R & B $33,864.14. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor should be done with dust control. There were several areas where they had to haul and apply water to the road before dust control could be done. He will continue on the road inspection list.

Time to do weed inspections around the township.

Supervisors divided up the area for inspection coverage.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $144,271.43.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Muellner seconded motion. Motion passed.

After discussion, Sup. Johnson made a motion to transfer $25, 000.00 from checking to savings account.

Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed with all voting in favor.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, July 27 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 13th day of July 2021 in council chambers.

Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Brad Johnson, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Bryan Bye, Evelyn Budde, Tim Ainali, Janine Kutter, Dave Borchert and Jane Eizenhoefer.

The council will discuss property clean up at the August meeting.

The council is working on building permit checklist and procedures as well as committee duties.

There were no building permit applications for council consideration.

Council instructed the Clerk to check with Update Building Supplies to see if they could build the sandbox.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve closing Woodman Street South from Spruce Street East to Pearl Street East on August 14th for the Grey Eagle Fire Department Relief Association Corn and Ham Feed. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The rescue rig was damaged and once the estimate for repairs is received, the clerk will submit it to the insurance company.
