Once a first impression is made, if it’s less than great, unfortunately it takes a long time to change it. People look at socio-economic status, level of education, social position, level of sophistication, economic background, social background, moral character and level of success. First impressions are influenced by our backgrounds, including our families, friends, education, religion, jobs and other factors. These include body language, dress and appearance, and voice. Your body language and appearance speak much louder than words. Use your body language to project appropriate confidence and selfassurance. Stand tall, make eye contact, greet with a firm handshake. Quite possibly, one of the most important and terrifying times to make a spectacular first impression is when you are interviewing for or starting a new job. The first day of a new job can be exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. Even if you never plan to leave your current job, you’ll probably be promoted or switch to a new position at some point, and the experience will be much the same. There are some guidelines for relieving some of that stress on day one that you should keep in mind. • Don’t be late. In fact, it’s best to be a little early. Double-check where you’re supposed to be and what time
you’re expected to start. If it’s a new workplace, test your route and give yourself extra time for a prompt arrival. • Learn the lay of the land. Your manager will probably show you around, but make an extra effort to remember what you see so you don’t have to repeat the same questions. Yes, you can always ask for directions later, but you’ll impress people more by being a quick study. • Master people’s names. Again, you’ll gain a reputation for attention and thoughtfulness by memorizing the names of everyone you meet. There are a variety of memory strategies that will help you match names and faces. There is no bigger compliment than using someone’s name when you speak to them. • Bring your lunch. Maybe the boss or co-workers will take you out to lunch on your first day, but don’t count on it. Stay in the workplace and eat in the lunchroom so you get a chance to meet more people. Just don’t waste too much time chowing down on your first day – demonstrate your eagerness to get back to work. • Smile. Put a pleasant expression on your face. Be friendly. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Moving straw
Looking back at some of the greatest users of our personal labor, I have to give a strong vote to straw. I’m sure that those of us who grew up on the farm remember moving straw. Originally it created some oats, but then it became bedding for the cows, steers calves, chickens, horses and pigs. Think of how many pounds of weight were created by lifting straw. Originally, the oats were cut with the old grain binder. The bundles were then picked up by hand and set, head up, to make shocks. After a couple of weeks, the bundles were picked up with a fork and manually loaded on a hay rack to be hauled to the thrashing machine. They were then unloaded with a fork into the thrashing machine. The thrashing machine then blew the straw into a big pile, which was fun to try to slide down. The straw pile was close and convenient to one barn, but that left the other four a greater distance away. As the straw pile settled, it became obvious that you could no longer just go out there and pick up the straw with a fork, so now you needed a hay hook. This tool had a straight handle and 4 right angle tines, which were slammed into the straw pile, pulled and hopefully you would be able to dislodge and pull down some straw. After a lot of pulling and jerking
you had a pile of straw which would be sufficient to create a fork load, which was picked up and carried to the barn. It was then put down, picked up and distributed to the various locations for bedding the animals. After a day as bedding became saturated and soiled with animal manure, it needed to be picked up and carried with a fork to a pile for later pick-up. A wagon or a manure box was used to move the manure. The manure was again picked up, placed on the wagon and hauled to the field, where it was picked off the manure wagon with a fork and thrown out on the field. Now we are finally done picking up straw. Thank God! Farmers began to realize how labor intensive straw was and began to mechanize. Combines thrashed the oats, rakes gathered it into rows, balers or choppers either baled or chopped the straw into wagons which hauled it into the barns for use as bedding. The manure is mechanically loaded into manure spreaders and spread on the field. We no longer carry straw around. However, now with all of these new labor saving devices, we need to have many more livestock to create enough revenue to be able to pay for all of these new labor saving machines. This requires more land, greater production and longer hours. Now the back is being saved from stress, but the stress has moved to the mind. Ain’t it great? be interested in your new co-workers. They’ll remember and appreciate your effort. • Restrain your instincts. Your first day is a time to learn, not to show off what you think you know. So show you are glad to be there, but don’t let your enthusiasm get the best of you lest you come off as insincere. Concentrate instead on what you can contribute and how you can fit in to the culture. On the other side of the equation, when I hire people, I am acutely aware of the first impression they leave on me. Will a customer have the same reaction? We’ve all had cringe-worthy moments hoping we came across as positive as we could. Remember the movie, “Pretty Woman?” Julia Roberts’ character goes into a swanky Beverly Hills shop looking for a wardrobe upgrade, wearing a very casual and somewhat provocative outfit. The saleswomen ignore her, thinking she can’t afford their clothing. She gets the
message and walks out of the store as quickly as she came in. But a couple days later, she returns, dressed to the nines. The sales staff is most attentive, anticipating a huge sale from this elegant woman. They obviously don’t recognize her. So she reminds them that they had snubbed her and so she took her business elsewhere. Nothing could make up for their pathetic first impression. Obituaries Brian D. Brix
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 AM Monday August 21, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Brian D. Brix, age 60 of Albany who died Wednesday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. The Rev. Gregory Miller, O.S.B. officiated, and burial was in the parish cemetery. Brian was born in St. Cloud to George and Helen (Studniski) Brix. He married Anne Konz on October 2, 1982 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake. He attended technical college to be a lineman after high school but instead took over the family farm in Avon and later farmed in Albany. In addition to farming he owned an excavating business for decades. He is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Brian was a hard-working family man

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 21st at 10:30 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph for Brent P. Bechtold, age 45, of Holdingford, formerly of St. Joseph, who died on Wednesday at his home. Rev. Jerome Tupa OSB officiated. Entombment was in the Parish Cemetery. Brent was born February 28th, 1972 in St. Cloud to Herb and Darlene (Kosel) Bechtold. He married Nicole Wentland on June 8th, 2002 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford. They resided on a hobby farm near Holdingford. He was employed as a 911 dispatcher for Stearns County Sheriff’s Office for 12 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic

Mary Bernadette “Bernie” Welck who took an active interest in his community. He served on the Board of Directors at the Central Livestock Association as well as the Minnesota Simmental Association. He served on the Avon Township Planning Board for 15 years. Brian enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching western shows, and spending time with his family. He was a skilled storyteller and liked to chew the fat, literally and figuratively. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren looking through tractor books, giving golf cart rides, and sneaking them Starburst and licorice. He was a man of integrity and honesty, and he took pride in a job well done. He is survived by his wife, Anne of Albany; children, Brady (Sandy) of Albany, Amy of St. Cloud, and Adam (Leah) of St. Cloud; sister, Jean Shepherd of Avon; grandchildren, Cory, Brooklyn, Phillip, Peter, Kathryn, Blaise as well as one more on the way; and 13 brothers- and sisters-inlaw. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ryan (April 25, 1991); sisters, Mary, Marlene, Inez, and brother, George.
Church. His passionate hobbies included umpiring softball games, and caring for his horses, his donkey, dogs and cats. He was known for his deviled eggs. He cherished spending time with his many nieces and nephews as they loved spending time with him. His professional life was dedicated to helping those in need or in crisis. He will always be remembered for his competent and dedicated service to Stearns County. Survivors include his wife Nikki, parents, Herb and Darlene Bechtold, of St. Joseph, siblings, Brian Bechtold (Kirsten) Sartell, Bruce Bechtold (Pat) St. Joseph, Brad Bechtold (Jane) Sauk Rapids, in laws, Donald and Mary Wentland, Holdingford, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeff and Christy Gustafson, Holdingford, Josh and Sue Wentland, Holdingford and Mike and Therese Lynch, Bowlus, many nieces and nephews, and his many four legged children. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Peter and Agnes Kosel and John and Esther Bechtold.

M a r y Bernadette “Bernie” Welck, age 89 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 31 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Mary Bernadette Peschel was born February 11, 1928 in Little Falls, Minnesota to George and Alice (Grimes) Peschel. On December 27, 1948 she was united in marriage to Thomas “Bud” Welck at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Bernie worked as a clerk at St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre for 25
years. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Christian Mothers, St. Joseph’s prayer line, and volunteered by helping deliver Meals on Wheels. Bernie enjoyed reading, watching the Minnesota Twins, the companionship of her dog, April, taking occasional trips to the casino, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Thomas “Tom” Jr. (Sharon) Welck of Grey Eagle, Cindy (Scott) Mathre of Cold Spring, and Jan (Fritz) Steile of Maple Grove; seven grandchildren, Jessi, Annie, Shannon, Leah, Ryan, Drew and Erin; and five great-grandchildren, Keegan, Quinn, Cal, Jack and Bennett. Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Bud” Welck on January 8, 2008; parents; granddaughter, Katelyn in 1985; brother, Don Peschel; and sister, Marjorie Fiduk. Serving as urn bearer will be Drew Steile. Cross bearer will be Keegan Mathre and scripture bearer will be Calan Heying. Memorials are preferred. Marcella “Sally” Bergmann The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Marcella “Sally” Bergmann, age 84 of Albany, will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 25 at the St. Rose Of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Sally died Saturday at the Mother Of Mercy Senior Living in Albany. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Thursday, at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany and again after 10:00 AM, Friday at the church in St. Rosa. St. Rose parish prayers will be at 5:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Sally was born September 28, 1932 to John and Adella (Kerfield) Blommel. She married Loren Bergmann on May 12, 1954 in Sacred Heart Church in Freeport. The couple moved to Minneapolis where they lived for 20 years before they moved
to the Big Birch Lake area. Sally worked at the Mother Of Mercy Senior Living, Fingerhut and she and Loren owned the Travelounge in Melrose. They eventually retired in Albany. She was a member of St. Rose Of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa and she was a past member of Incarnation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where she had been very active. Sally is survived by her loving children, John (Jayne) Bergmann, Bradenton, FL; Cindy (Jack) Sandberg, Hutchinson; Judy (John) Schulte, Eden Prairie; Gregg (Patty Kringen) Bergmann, Albany; Jason (Lindsay) Bergmann, Albany; Lisa (Eric) Roling, Brooklyn Park; her sisters, Helen (Eb) Hinnenkamp, Birch Lake; Alice (Wally) Hoeschen, Freeport; and Annie (David) Stommes, Nine Mile Falls, WA. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Sally is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Loren on December 16, 2012, her brothers, Roman Blommel and Norbert Blommel, and her sister, Marlene Hinnenkamp.

Anna B. Boeckers
The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Anna B. Boeckers, age 89 of Albany, will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, August 25th at the Church of St. Anthony in St. Anthony. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Anna died Sunday at Arlington Place in St. Joseph with her family by her side. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Thursday and again after 12:00 Noon Friday at the church in St. Anthony. St. Anthony parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM Thursday at the church. St. Anthony Christian Mothers will pray at 12:30 PM, Friday at the church. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home. Anna was born April 28, 1928 in Albany Township to Martin and Anna (Einyk) Heinen. She lived all her life in the area. She married Alois Boeckers on October 18, 1949 in the Church of St. Anthony. She and Alois farmed together and she worked
for the Green Thumb Program. She also worked as a school Custodian for the Avon schools for 13 years. She was also an avid twins fan. She was a member of the Church of St. Anthony, the St. Anthony Christian Mothers and the Poor Souls Society. Anna is survived by her children, Ralph (Janet) Boeckers, St. Joseph; Diane (David) Yell, Brooklyn Park; Dennis (Mary Ellen) Boeckers, Sauk Centre; Roger (Nancy) Boeckers, Forest Lake; Sharon (Joseph) Knepprath, Maple Grove; Ervin (Shirley) Boeckers, Adell, WI; Janice (Richard) Collins, Aitkin; Thomas (Elizabeth) Boeckers, Arlington, TX; Carol (Dennis) Miller, Sun Prairie, WI; Mark (Judy) Boeckers, Buffalo, 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Dolores (Robert) Weyer, Sauk Rapids; Mildred (Richard) Nienaber, Freeport; David (Margaret) Heinen, Waite Park; Gerald (Ione) Heinen, Albany, Rosemary (Thomas) Nienaber, Burtrum; and Vernon (Karen) Heinen, Albany. Dear Dave, My husband opened his own commercial painting business in May. He knows he will have about three months in the year where he’s making little to no income. We’ve gotten $1,000 set aside for our Baby Step 1 beginner’s emergency fund, but because of that down period he would like to skip paying off all our debt except for the house, which is Baby Step 2, and move to Baby Step 3 and put an emergency fund aside. I can understand his thinking, but I wanted your thoughts on the idea. -Melody Dear Melody, Baby Step 3 is not a fill-in-thegap measure for income you already know won’t be there. Baby Step 3 is an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, and the scenario he’s talking about is not an emergency. He knows it’s coming, so it is not an emergency. I think he needs to re-work his business model. This guy needs something to do during those three months, so he doesn’t drop off to no income. Also, if you’re going to set some money aside for a down time, that would not be Baby Step 3. It would be a line in the budget where you’re setting some money aside, because you know a problem’s coming. If something happens around the same time every year it becomes predicable, and it’s not an emergency. So, it’s not really a matter of the order

You have incredibly stable employment, so you would probably be okay on the threemonth side of that equation. And you wouldn’t need quite as much emergency fund money as if you were a straight commission salesman. However, my guess is you’ll still have emergencies that will be your responsibility to cover. Everyone needs an emergency fund, Brad. But in your situation, you’ll probably be okay with one that’s closer to three months of expenses rather than six months of expenses. Morrison County Sheriff’s Office
August 23, 2017: Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen reports that at approximately 5:52 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one vehicle accident on 55th Avenue, north of 50th Street and northeast of Upsala, in Elmdale Township. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a Ford truck was traveling north on 55th Avenue when it went into the ditch on the east side of the road. The truck rolled and the lone occupant was ejected. 21-year-old Cody Babineau, of Bowlus, MN was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is under investigation by the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Minnesota State Patrol, Upsala First Response Team and Gold Cross Ambulance.

It Is Almost Here! - By John Young
This week’s article will be a bit different. Instead of sharing something about functioning online or how to improve your business, I wanted to share a bit about a new project we will be launching on Thursday, September 7, 2017. A bit of back story first. In 2014 we launched what was at the time the only weekly live video shows in the mobile DJ industry with our DJNTV channel. Each week we created programming and would stream the shows live to an audience from around the world. This project had its ups and downs as all projects do. We have had issues with equipment, software, internet access along with our streaming websites having growing pains as more and more started to use that medium. It seems in the first year we were finding and fixing problems with the live shows every week! But, as time went on, we developed a system to stream semi consistent quality shows (there are some days that we still have hiccups) and it has helped develop a community of small business owners who enjoy gathering each week for our live shows. We knew the concept of live shows produced on a smaller scale would be popular. We wanted to take some of the best from our experience with our weekly live shows on DJNTV and bring that to the Hometown News. The Hometown News is a unique publication in the print publication arena. While many newspapers suffer from falling circulation numbers and fewer readers; thanks to great folks like yourself, the weekly numbers and circulation of the Hometown News has been steady and slightly growing each year. This is so unusual in the print industry to have a publication stay so strong in the internet age! You might have noticed that in the past few years, we have started to develop our online side with more information on our social media channels as well as on our website. We have live covered many local news events over

Grey Eagle Township August 14, 2017 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe. Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the July 3, 2017 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved. Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for July. Claims list included 13 claims 3084-3096 for a total of $13,344.73. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Mail included advertising, P&Z letters, District 8 mtg. notice and a copy of the discharge permit for the City from MPCA.
Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that he had picked up two new culverts and that the two projects on 130th west and 321st were completed. The two culverts on Brakken Road were redone as the engineer suggested. The paving projects are scheduled to begin mid September till approx. early October. Ray will review the spraying and contact Carr’s if needed. This year’s mowing project was poorly handled. No return calls from the contractor, grass clumps on the
road and not done in time frame that was required. Will be sending a letter to request the contractor to attend the next meeting before payment can be made. Ron stated he had obtained a permit from DNR to trap beaver along 116th where a culvert had been blocked. Additional agenda item: September meeting will be September 11. Public Comment: None. CentraCare Clinic receives awards for exceptional care
A total of 13 CentraCare Clinic sites received awards from the Minnesota Health Action Group’s Minnesota Bridges to Excellence (MNBTE) program. MNBTE recognized 248 Minnesota and border state clinics who demonstrated a commitment to improving treatment of diabetes, vascular disease and depression, three chronic conditions that are key drivers of health care costs in the state. This year’s recognized clinics will share $163,358 in rewards. Financial rewards for each clinic are based on the number of patients treated there who receive health care benefits from participating purchasers (the Minnesota Bridges to Excellence Champions of Change). Since 2006, MNBTE has awarded more than $6.5 million to high-performing clinics and care systems to reward optimal care for people with diabetes, vascular disease and depression. Those rewards have helped inspire improvements to care for patients across the state.

August 15, 2017: At 12:23 Harland Grant Kunz (72) of Burtrum reported a damage to property complaint. Kunz reported that sometime over the summer months someone had put sand in his fuel oil barrel for his furnace. August 15, 2017: At 17:52 TCSO received a call of a burglary that happened at the address of 32194 County 12 in rural Swanville, Bruce TWP Sect 34. Between the dates of Friday 08/11/2017 at 12:00 hours and Sunday 08/13/2017 at 16:00 hours, suspects forced entry into an unattached shed on the property. Three motorcycles were stolen in the burglary. If you have information regarding this incident, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 1-800-794-5733. The incident is currently under investigation. August 17, 2017: At 14:08 Todd County Sheriff’s Office investigated the theft of a Cabela’s game camera from Dunlin Rd, Burtrum. The game camera was camouflaged and was taken off of a tree around July 28th or 29th. Anyone with information please contact the Sheriff’s Office. August 18, 2017: At 13:38 Todd County Sheriff’s Office is asking boaters in Todd County to observe a NO WAKE period until the area lakes have

August 21, 2017: At 16:47 Joshua Peters of rural Long Prairie crossed the lane of traffic to pull into his driveway on County 12 when his Chevy Tahoe was struck by a Ford Mustang driven by Alita Scherping of Swanville. Both vehicles sustained severe damage and had to be towed from the roadway. Peters was injured in the crash while Scherping sustained minor injuries. August 22, 2017: At 06:31 Todd County Sheriff Don Asmus reports that a search warrant was executed at 612 1st St. South in Long Prairie. Taken into custody was: Dwight Carroll Miller Jr. (43) 612 1st St. South LP and Mesikt Elizabeth Iyechad (37) 612 1st St. South LP. Both were arrested for multiple charges including Felon in possession of weapons and ammunition, 5th degree possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine) and probation violations. The investigation is ongoing and other arrests are expected. Todd County was assisted by Agents from the Central MN Violent Offender Task Force, Wadena/Hubbard County SWAT Team, Sauk Centre PD and LPPD
Sealing Abandoned Wells Well sealing is permanently closing a well that is no longer used or is deemed unsafe. State law requires abandoned wells in Minnesota to be sealed. Well sealing involves clearing debris from the well and filling it with grout. This must be done by a licensed contractor. An unused well can act as a drain, allowing surface runoff, pollutes water and improperly disposed of solid or other waste to contaminate groundwater. Sealing abandoned wells protects groundwater quality. It can also protect surface water quality in areas with spring fed streams, such as the karst landscape of southeastern Minnesota.
