The fourth requirement is discipline.

Let me give you my take on all four: Commitment to excellence. When you are interested in doing something, you do it when circumstances permit.

However, when you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results.

Commitment is a prerequisite to success. Commitment is the state of being bound – emotionally, intellectually, or both – to a course of action. Commitment starts with a choice and is sustained by dedication and perseverance.

Actions speak louder than words.

who are willing to put the blood, sweat and tears into their effort.

Attention to detail. I like to add one word – Fanatical attention to detail. The difference between failure and success is doing a thing nearly right and doing it exactly right.

Having a fanatical attention to detail is a mindset. It must be an obsession. It has to be part of a company’s culture or an individual’s mindset. You can’t just talk about it. You have to practice it every day for years.

It is not enough just to do the best you can. You also have to do everything you can. There are no shortcuts in the world of sports – or life. If it were easy to become the best, everyone would do it.

Sound fundamentals. Look at the great athletes and musicians. There are no walk-ons at the Super Bowl or Carnegie Hall – or in corporate boardrooms for that matter. The level of performance in those exalted places is only partially a reflection of talent. Practice sound fundamentals.

It’s kind of like a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps 100 times without a dent in it. And yet on the 101st blow the rock splits in two. And it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before. If you’re not willing to practice – and practice until you get it right – you will never make the 100 blows that make the breakthrough on the 101st.

Discipline. Most people aim to do right, but they fail to pull the trigger.

For whatever reason, they just don’t have the wherewithal to finish the job.

They are lacking discipline.

It doesn’t matter whether you are pursuing success in business, sports, the arts, or life in general. Hope is not an option. The difference between wishing and accomplishing is discipline.

Discipline is all about setting goals, figuring out a schedule to achieve those goals, and then following your plan.

Obituary Bernice E. Greener

Bernice E. Greener, age 83 of Albany, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m.

Friday, August 23 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany with Rev. Bradley Pearson officiating. Inurnment will be in St. John’s Cemetery following the lunch.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the church in Albany.

Bernice Emma Teske was born November 17, 1929 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Fred and Emma (Schmidt) Teske. On February 12, 1949 she was united in marriage to Albert Greener at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Krain Township. Bernice enjoyed her life

on the farm as a homemaker. She loved her bible study and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bernice was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

Survivors include her children, Glen (Carol) Greener of Albany and Jane Achman of Freeport; grandchildren, Jackie Doubek, Jason Achman, Beth Pallow, Crystal Zeman, Russ Achman, Mike Greener, and Emily Greener; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Evelyn Groth of Albany.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Greener on July 3, 2013; parents; brothers, Roman Teske, Gordon Teske, and Harold Teske; sister, Florence Gruenwald; and infant sister, Martha Teske.

Serving as honorary bearers will be Jackie Doubek, Jason Achman, Beth Pallow, Crystal Zeman, Russ Achman, Mike Greener, and Emily Greener.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Upsala Band to sponsor Annual Back-To-School Brat Supper The Upsala Area High School Band will be sponsoring a Brat Supper on Wednesday, August 28, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The meal, to be served in the Upsala High School cafeteria, will include brat or hot dog, salad, chips, dessert and a beverage. This is also the evening of the Open House in the elementary where students can come and meet their teachers.

The Upsala Band members, under the direction of Mrs. Denise Cheney, work hard to raise money for the tour that the concert band takes every two years.

Proceeds from the Brat Supper will be put toward their next tour to Florida in the spring of 2014.

Updated Minnesota state bicycle map now available Paper, electronic editions cover bike facilities statewide The Minnesota Department of Transportation has published an updated edition of the state’s bicycle map, the first since 2001.

Available both in paper and electronic format, the free map provides bicycle accommodations across the state, making it easier for cyclists to plan longdistance bicycle trips. Map information includes: • Roadway details - shoulder width, pavement type and traffic volumes (low or high) • State and regional trails, including the Mississippi River Trail • State historic sites, parks, city index and other points of interest • Safety tips Paper versions of the map are available at the MnDOT Central Office Building, 395 John Ireland Boulevard in St. Paul, and at the Kick Gas exhibit inside the Eco Experience building on

Randall Avenue, during the Minnesota State Fair, Aug. 22-Sept. 2.

The electronic version of the map, available at mndot.gov/bike/maps.html and compatible with smart phones, features more detailed routes than the paper version, and includes smaller and printable areas of the state. The online version of the map will be updated twice yearly and offers opportunities for public feedback. Cyclists also may request a paper version of the map on the website.

Bicycling plays a big role in Minnesota’s transportation system, and the state ranked as the fourth overall “Bicycle Friendly State” by the League of American Bicyclists in May 2013.

States were evaluated based on legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement, evaluation and planning.

Paying it Forward is Great!

wasn’t only fun; the experience made me happy.

So I started a new quest.

A gentlewoman at my health insurance company who, out of pure compassion upon hearing me crying, took it upon herself to make the countless calls I was supposed to make. When I told her supervisor what a difference this gal made, he surprised her with a huge box of chocolate chip cookies.

My helpers all modestly claim that their performance is simply a part of the job. I know it’s more than that.

Extraordinary kindness is a result of who people are on the inside, not the product of a job description.

Nancy, a pharmacist at Rite Aid, is the queen of helpfulness. I said, “Is there someone I could speak with about how wonderful all of you are who work here?”

“Well,” she said shyly, “you could fill out a short survey if you wouldn’t mind.”

It took me a little over a minute to complete the survey. What a small thing to do to help someone who has been so extraordinary to me.

I have another boyfriend besides Jared. He’s Zack at PetSmart. He’d gladly walk a mile around the store to save me from taking 4 steps. I thought of calling his manager but then focused on the hassle of doing that.

“Such an ordeal,” I said to myself sarcastically. “Pure torture to press 11 numbers on my touchtone phone. ” When I talked with the manager, he proudly told me that Zach is more than a great worker; he’s an exceptional human being who cares deeply about everyone he works with. He then surprised Zach with some free stuff.

Those who help me seem to be the shyest of all. Maybe that’s because they don’t carry out good deeds for recognition. They do them because they believe in their hearts that it’s the right thing.

It’s a win-win-win situation.

They’re happy. I’m happy. Bosses are happy. Why wouldn’t we do this?

Last week Jared texted me. “It was a blessing meeting you.”

He’s the one who feels blessed? It’s because of Jared that I began this pursuit of helping myself by helping others sparkle even more than they already do.

By Saralee Perel When I told my husband, Bob, about my latest doings, he said, “You should tell others so they can feel as good as you do.”

I met Jared Whittemore when he worked at the check out lines at a supermarket. If he didn’t have a girlfriend, I’d be first in line. (Sorry Bob.) Although I didn’t ask for help, Jared knew I needed it. What he didn’t know was that he’d be the recipient of a special treat.

I use a motorized shopping cart because of my walking problem. While I was trying to move items from the basket of my cart to the conveyor belt, Jared stopped what he was doing and put my groceries on the belt without saying a word.

I didn’t accept his offer to take the groceries to my truck. (I have an insane problem with accepting help.)

Jared took my groceries out anyway. “I have nothing to give you,” I said.

“But I want to help you. Please ask for me any time you’re here.”

“Who’s your manager, Jared? I’d like that person to know how amazing you are.”

He was too shy to tell me.

I teased him. “If you don’t tell me, I can find out on my own.”

He still wouldn’t say. I felt too timid and lazy to go back in the store. Then I gave myself one of my talks. “Any action, no matter how seemingly small, can change a life.”

What motivates me to break through my bashfulness or do-nothingness is how badly I’ll feel if I don’t.

So I went back in the store.

The manager was elated, though not surprised, to hear how exceptional Jared was to me. And because of my praise, Jared was given a special token of appreciation.

Taking that step beyond a “thank you” took me no longer than 2 minutes.

It made a big difference for Jared. It made a profound difference for me. It

By Carol Duke “Whenever a Lion’s club gets together, problems get smaller and communities get better”. This is the philosophy of the Lions Club. With over 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members makes the Lions the worlds largest service organization.

The Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions has been a service organization in the area for 34 years. They are a community service international organization with 40 local members. The members are a diverse group from all walks of life.

The Lions are always looking for new members from the local area to join the organization.

The Lions Club sponsors many events to raise money for local projects. The events they sponsor are Race on Trace, Red Cross Blood Drive, Road Ditch cleanup, Community Appreciation events and GEM Fest. Another event they sponsor is the Labor Day Tractor Pull in Grey Eagle and the Grey Eagle Fire Department Corn Feed.

The Grey Eagle/Burtrum Lions have contributed more than $1.4 million to area organizations. Some of the lo-

cal projects are the Grey Eagle Library, Grey Eagle Senior Center, Grey Eagle Veteran’s Memorial, Grey Eagle and Burtrum city parks, the Grey Eagle tennis courts, various school projects, Long Prairie Food Pantry and many other local, national and inter-national community projects.

The Lions also supply many man hours with such events as Heritage Days, Swanville Carnival, Breakfast on the Farm and even with helping residents move in or out of Village View Apartments.

Their time and dedication to the Grey Eagle/ Burtrum area is enormous.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Special session terms remain a work in progress Will there be a special session of the Legislature or not?

High level negotiations continue this week between Gov. Dayton and leadership of both parties, seeking agreement on the agenda for what usually is a one-day session to work on a single issue. The scope of the agenda became a sticking point earlier when the governor surprised many by announcing at Farmfest that he would consider the repeal of a new sales tax on farm repairs. Previously, the special session had only one item, that being the allocation of state funds to match federal disaster money for 18 counties in Minnesota (including all three in District 12B) that were declared disaster areas due to severe storms in June.

The state’s share of the disaster relief money is between $4 million and $5 million, while the repeal of the sales tax on the labor portion of farm repairs is projected to cost the state around $28 million. Enough of a surplus remains from the last fiscal year that ended June 30 to cover the cost of those two items.

In addition, there have been calls ever since the Legislature adjourned to repeal another new tax, one that broadens the sales tax to commercial warehousing and storage.

This “business-to-business” tax would make our state uncompetitive with neighboring states and could drive companies who provide warehousing to leave Minnesota and relocate in other states such as Wisconsin. The tax is not scheduled to take effect until this April, and the governor is saying that it could be repealed next year when more is known about the new state budget. Others say the tax should be repealed immediately to give business the assurance that they can expand here in Minnesota without the threat of this new tax hanging over them.

There were two other taxes enacted last session that are also being touted for repeal. Both are taxes on business, and the cost of which would probably be passed on to consumers. They are expansions of the sales tax, with one being assessed on telecommunications equipment and the other on the repair of commercial equipment. If the farm repair tax is repealed and the tax on other commercial equipment is not, it could lead to confusion about what is taxable or not.

For example, what about a truck used to haul both farm produce and other products not produced by a farmer?

I favor the repeal of all these taxes, but the special session may not be the time to do all of them. Removing all would leave a hole in the state budget too large to be covered by last year’s surplus and may necessitate further work on the budget or tax bill to fill the gap. Adding to the confusion, reports surfaced late last week that a special session may not be needed after all to cover the disaster aid because of unused funds from previous disaster allocations. We should know soon if the Legislature will be called back or not.

It’s been a challenging year on the agriculture front. A late, cool spring was followed by a cool summer, and rainfall has been spotty throughout the area.

Severe hailstorms rolled through the district two weeks ago, leaving shredded crops in the areas they hit. Now, the forecast is calling for heat to finally return for the rest of August. The heat is needed to push crops to maturity, but for the areas short of moisture, rain is needed soon or the crop will deteriorate quickly. A seed company agronomist showed us a cob of corn at the Stearns County golf outing last week and said it would take until around Oct. 10 for the field where that cob came from to reach “black layer” or maturity. The odds of reaching that date before a killing frost are questionable.

Desensitized -By Sheila Ripplinger We cannot deny that there is a lack of sensitivity in this world in which we live. There is a coldness and numbness in the people around us with a gloomy perspective on life in general.

It is interesting that the chosen secular word for this insensitive, dull condition is a word used in photography, which is a process to make the film less sensitive to light- desensitized. Hmm...

The same definition for what is going on in the world.

The enemy of our souls represents

all that is dark and evil. He is constantly at work to make us less sensitive to the (light) - the things that are good and true and right. It would appear that his tactics are working quite well as we witness the increase in wickedness.

When we turn on the television or computer we are bombarded with immoral images, horrific scenes, and ultimate bad news. We do not have to wonder too deeply how this present generation has become so desensitized.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; absent: Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Hank Wilhelm, Patricia Fish, Sue Gurley, Ervin Muellner, Don Brown and Erv Herdering.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of June 25, 2013.

Motion seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4829 through 4841: Rev. $1,185.38, R&B $27,086.63. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Correspondence included notices of District 8 meeting, Todd County planning meeting on Ditch 10, gas line safety information, new sales tax information meeting, and bank insurance notice.

The board received a liquor license request from the new owners of The Hub Supper Club. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the liquor license for Ricky Valencia. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A resident came to discuss the wash outs and repairs on Dunlin Road. Discussed reshaping the crown, building up a berm, and keeping culvert free of debris to help prevent road gravel washing into residents‘ yards. The board and residents will keep checking on condition of the road.

Another resident had questions on issues about irrigation wells in the area. He was advised to contract the DNR if there is a problem.

The DNR has not had problems in this area with irrigation systems.

Also, discussed the condition of Bass Lake Public Access, weeds in that area and dust control spraying weather issues.

Another resident requested the culvert under the driveway of his property be cleaned. This culvert is for private property and the owner is responsible for cleaning it.

Many issues were covered in the road report. The board discussed the soybean oil dust control on 184th St. and Explorer Drive.

The contractor discussed respraying the road in sections to see if it says better. The board will talk to the residents to encourage them to stay to one side of the road to stay off the newly sprayed area so that it sets up and dries better. Last year the contractor made a single pass of dust control to fill in areas on Flicker Rd. While there is some carry over of that spray this year, the board will not respray the between areas again this year. One large rock in the road of Ermine Dr. could not be removed, so it was buried deeper. For 210th the board needs to develop a plan for ditches and washout chutes as well as build up the road. Weed inspection was completed with only a few problems. Supervisor completed the sign inventory and replacement of lost signs.

Next month is the annual Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $241,806.27 before tonight’s bills. The board discussed putting more money in savings or CD. Treasurer’s report accepted on a motion by Sup. Johnson and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

Motion was made by Sup. Thompson to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:16 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on August 27, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

With the Light of the Truth found in the Holy Bible. 2. Teach our children the garbage in garbage out analogy. 3. Teach them to search for the Truth and Light and to learn the Fear of the Lord.

3, 3:30-5:00 p.m. for adults, teens and children ages ten and older to create a community mosaic at the Swanville Community Center. Professional mosaic artist Lisa Arnold will demonstrate how to make beautiful mosaics using stained glass, pebbles and ceramic tile.

Upsala Heritage Festival a Great Success!

Upsala Heritage Festival held on August 9-11, 2013 was a weekend filled with activities which included a parade, entertainment, contests, games, foods, displays, community worship service, fireworks, waffle feed, threshing show and just good times and a lot of fellowship. The weekend was deemed a success with high participation at all levels.

This was the second year for the madallion hunt. The medallion was found on Thursday night by Kandelle Olson winning $100.00 in Upsala Bucks. The clues were tough this year.

Friday night was a free Country Gospel Concert with a great turn out. Good music feeds the soul. Thank you to those groups who participated. College Night 2013 was held at the Upsala High School. This is a good introduction to college.

Saturday was a full day of contests with a 5K Run, Bean Bag Contest, FFA Pedal Pull, Fire Department Water Fight and the Car Show. The kids had a good time on the inflatables. The food was great and the weather couldn’t have been better. Thank you to all who put in so much time and effort to make this happen. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The Borgstrom House had great participation with Shirley Bergstrom, author of “Eyes in The Woods” a book with much Upsala history. Thank you to the Historical Society.

The parade added so much to the weekend. Great job to all. The first place theme float was Woller Equipment winning $150.00 in Upsala Bucks, second place went to the Community Covenant Church winning $100.00 in Upsala Bucks and the third place went to Hennen Carpet in Freeport winning $50.00 in Upsala Bucks.

Saturday night was well attended. UBA did a great job with a softball tournament, wheelbarrow race, ocotoball, music and great food. The firemen also held their raffle.

The fireworks were loud and lit up the sky with much color. It was cool. Thank you to the Lions and American Legion for sponsoring the fireworks.

Sunday was “Dad’s Belgium Waffles” sponsored by the Upsala Area Community Center. The Community Worship Service was well attended by all denominations. We are blessed and we were blessed. The Threshing Show had a beautiful day showing what it was like in the olden days. Thank you to Dennis Westrich.

In conclusion, one might say “A good time was had by all.” We are a blessed town to have so many who use their time and talents to make things happen. Thank you again to all who made this weekend a great success. You are appreciated. Next year, who knows what might be planned. Surprise, surprise. Be here to find out!
