are being interviewed. But I’m willing to hire someone who doesn’t have perfect credentials, but is willing to learn because skills can be taught. A finely-tuned training program can weed out those who are not up to the job.

Character is a little more complicated.

Multiple interviews expose different parts of someone’s personality. For key hires, I always insist that candidates meet with an industrial psychologist to detect any red flags. Even then, we’ve had a few slip through.

Once that new person has started on the job, it’s only fair to be very clear about what is important to your organization. If you don’t define your expectations, you can’t fault someone for failing to live up to them.

legendary David Ogilvy, who was chief executive officer of the advertising company, Ogilvy & Mather. He was giving a talk at the company’s annual year-end party. Speaking particularly to newcomers in the business, he said: I want the newcomers to know what kind of behavior we admire and what kind of behavior we deplore.

1. First, we admire people who work hard. We dislike passengers who don’t pull their weight in the boat.

2. We admire people with first-class brains, because you cannot run a great advertising agency without brainy people.

3. We admire people who avoid politics – office politics, I mean.

4. We despise toadies who suck up to their bosses. They are generally the same people who bully their subordinates.

6. We admire people who hire subordinates who are good enough to succeed them. We pity people who are so insecure that they feel compelled to hire inferior specimens as their subordinates.

7. We admire people who build up and develop their subordinates, because this is the only way we can promote from within the ranks. We detest having to go outside to fill important jobs, and I look forward to the day when that will never be necessary.

8. We admire people who practice delegation. The more you delegate, the more responsibility will be loaded upon you.

9. We admire kindly people with gentle manners who treat other people as human beings – particularly the people who sell things to us. We abhor quarrelsome people. We abhor people who wage paper warfare. We abhor buck passers, and people who don’t tell the truth.

10. We admire well-organized people who keep their offices shipshape, and deliver their work on time.

11. We admire people who are good citizens in their communities – people who work for their local hospitals, their church, the PTA, the Community Chest and so on.

I’m not sure whether these remarks were framed and hung in every office at Ogilvy and Mather. But I think the sentiments bear repeating for employees in so many organizations. Just imagine

David Ogilvy seized an opportunity to share his thoughts on the corporate culture explicitly and publicly. Some organizations may not have the luxury of such an event, but they nonetheless owe employees a clear explanation of expectations.

When you’ve worked hard to hire and train the best people you can find, it only makes sense to help them succeed in your organization. Managers bear the responsibility for establishing policy.

They serve as role models, cheerleaders and enforcers. They absolutely must set the example for all employees.

Obituaries Eugene H. “Gene” Loecken Eugene H. “Gene” Loecken, age 86 of St. Martin, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, August 21 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin with Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thursday at the St. Martin Parish Hall in St. Martin.

Eugene Harry Loecken was born July 31, 1928 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Peter and Alma (Schoenborn) Loecken.

He graduated from Albany High School at the age of 15. He was united in marriage to Emma Hoppe on September 6, 1949 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. The couple was married for nearly 50 years before Emma passed away from cancer in 1999. He then married Carol Finken on July 11, 2003 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Gene worked for the Cold Spring Granite Company for 47 years. He lived

Gene was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin and the Catholic Order of Foresters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing BINGO, bird watching, and going for rides with his dog, Sparky.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Loecken of Albany; children, Charlene Loecken of St. Joseph, Joan (Thomas) Breth of St. Joseph, Beverly (Arche) Bergeron of Tracy, California, Mary (David) Wright of Fletcher, North Carolina, Debbie Loecken of St. Joseph, Eugene (Melissa) Loecken, Jr., of Frederick, Maryland, and Amy (Stephen) Rothstein of Ramsey; step-children, Deb (Bruce) Hinnenkamp of Albany, Jeanne (Bruce) Hoeschen of Freeport, Vickie (Glenn) Hinnenkamp of Melrose, Scott (Darlene) Finken of Albany; ten grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; sister, Priscilla Klassen of Cold Spring; and brothers, Joseph (Terri) Loecken of Melrose and James (Liz) Loecken of Swanville.

Gene was preceded in death by first wife, Emma Loecken on May 10, 1999; daughters, Bonnie and Charlotte; and sister, Bernice Bible.

Serving as casket bearers will be Matt Breth, Russ Eiynk, Cody Hinnenkamp, Jason Bjerke, Sam Rothstein, and Brandon Hoeschen. Cross bearer will be Angela Rothstein and scripture bearer will be Jaclyn Joyner. Gift bearers will be Dalton Finken, Cole Finken, and Olivia Hinnenkamp.

Selestia E. Zenzen

Selestia E. Zenzen, age 94 of Melrose, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Selestia Elizabeth Enneking was born June 14, 1920 in Melrose, Minnesota to Bernard and Elizabeth (Hinnenkamp) Enneking. She was united in marriage to Edwin Zenzen on June 18, 1946 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

The couple farmed in Melrose Township, Stearns County until retiring in 1982.

They moved to Melrose in 1990.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, Sts. Bernard and Elizabeth Society, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary. Selestia enjoyed quilting, embroidering, and baking. She also enjoyed outdoor activities such as gardening and spending time at the

Survivors include her children, Art Zenzen and his wife, Marilyn of Plymouth, Wayne Zenzen and his wife, Shirley of Melrose, and Carla Peschel and her husband, David of St. Cloud; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ray Zenzen and his wife, Laura of Melrose; and sister-in-law, Rita Enneking of Sauk Centre.

Selestia was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Zenzen on November 27, 2005; parents; step-mother, Katherine Enneking; and brother, LaVerne Enneking.

Serving as casket bearers were Drew Peschel, John Peschel, Matt Zenzen, Mark Zenzen, Noah Zenzen, and Molly Kjorstad. Cross bearer was Ashley Zenzen and scripture bearer was Beth Zenzen.

In November 1947 she married George Clear and they moved to St. Paul where she worked at St. Luke’s Hospital. In 1974 they divorced. In 1988 she retired and in 1999 she moved to the Village View Apartments in Grey Eagle.

Redi was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and she enjoyed embroidery, knitting, canning and gardening.

Survivors include her three children: Pamela (Robert) Morse of Altoona,WI, Duane (Patricia) Clear of Elk River, and Bruce (Sandra) Clear of Grey Eagle; 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild; and sisters, Rita and Henrietta.

Redi was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters.

Jerome A. “Jerry” Wenning

J e r o m e A. “Jerry” Wenning, age 78 of Albany, died Sunday, August 17, 2014 at his home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, August 22 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. officiating. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Friday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area.

Jerome Anton Wenning was born July 4, 1936 in Avon Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alois and Genevieve (Zenzen) Wenning. He farmed on the family farm in Holding Township his entire life. Jerome joined the Minnesota National Guard in 1955 through 1961 and then reenlisted through 1963.

He was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Jerome enjoyed going to auction sales and fishing with his friends. He was proud of his collection of farm tractors, John Deere machinery, and his toy tractor collection.

Survivors include his mother, Genevieve Wenning of Albany; brothers and sisters, Marlene (Lloyd) Maus of St. Paul, Arnie (Ellen) Wenning of St. Joseph, Betty (Jerry) Baggenstoss of St. Joseph, Kenny (Linda) Wenning of Albany, David (LuAnn) Wenning of Albany, Diann (Duane) Shabel of St. Cloud, and Allen (Joan) Wenning of Holdingford; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Jerome was preceded in death by his father, Alois Wenning on April 18, 1980; nephew, Jon Maus; great-nephew, Taylor John Wenning; and great-niece, Lily Klaphake.

Serving as urn bearer will be Joe Baggenstoss. Cross bearer will be Joe Wenning and scripture bearer will be Jason Wenning.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I have a 5-year-old daughter, and I want to start a 529 for her. However, I’m concerned that the government might seize the 529 assets in order to pay off debt and give people treasury bonds instead. Do you think this might

happen?

-Barry Dear Barry, I think there’s less than a one percent chance they’d seize the actual assets.

Really, I don’t believe they’re any more likely to come take investments away than they are to come take your home. I mean, we’re really talking about private property here. If you have $100,000 in a retirement fund, and they say they’re going to take that away from you, it’s like taking a person’s home. I just don’t see that happening.

The big question, I think, is this: Are they likely to take away some of the tax benefits — like the 529 plan’s ability to grow tax-free? As in, they just come in and say they’re making it all taxable to pay the bills they’ve accumulated up in Washington, D.C. from all their stupid behavior. That kind of thing actually could happen.

Watching Your Own Bobber

By Sheila Ripplinger Living in Minnesota, we are familiar with some dialect that others associate us with, such as ‘Youbethcha!’, which can be translated to mean, ‘You are most certainly right about that!’ One of my personal favorite idioms is, ‘Watch your own bobber!’... which I understand to mean, ‘mind your own business!’

I grew up with some die hard fisherman and learned a few life lessons from going fishing with them. From patience testing to casting away from the wind, along with many more lessons in between! One thing I remember being taught literally was that I was responsible for keeping my eyes on my own bobber. If you were not paying attention, your bobber could go down quick and you could lose your grip and lose your whole rod and reel to the bottom of the lake! There are many of them lying at the bottom of our Minnesota lakes that could testify to that reality.

When we concern ourselves too much with what those around us are doing without paying attention to our own selves, it leads us to condemn, criticize, slander, and judge others. That leads to pain and discouragement, and often the destruction of lives.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 7 to ‘take the plank out of our own eye instead of trying to remove the speck of sawdust in someone else’s eye.’ We can always find someone who appears to act more sinful than us. Maybe this is human nature, but the Lord clearly condemns it. We are all sinners in need of God’s saving Grace; every single one of us, whether we have a plank in our eye or a speck of sawdust.

One day, we will individually face the Judgement of God Almighty. We will not be able to stand before Him and say, “Look at that person Lord, they were much worse of a sinner than I was!” That will not be acceptable. In Matthew 23, Jesus gives some woes to the religious leaders and teachers, calling them hypocrites. They were like whitewashed tombs which look good on the outside, appearing to be righteous with their robes and rituals, but on the inside are full of hypocrisy and wickedness and everything unclean.

We somehow tend to think more highly of ourselves if we can look down on another person’s faults and failures.

This is wrong in God’s eyes. He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins that we have committed against God. Big sins, little sins, hidden sins, open sins.... only Jesus’ perfect blood can set us free from the chains of sin.

We need to stop comparing ourselves, stop judging others, and mind our own business of where we stand before a Holy and Just God. We are responsible for ‘watching our own bobber’. Are we living by God’s commandments and warnings? Or are we living by the sinful standards of the world? We cannot do both, or we may lose our grip if we try.

We will one day be judged fairly by what we did with the life that God gave us to live.

Church on Birch August 24 For over 20 years, GE UMC held a summer worship service on Hammarsten Island on Big Birch Lake. Since the island was sold last summer, the option of island worship ended. Last summer no outdoor summer worship was held and some people felt a void in our worship experience.

New Senate Office Building Moves Forward

Despite being bogged down in controversy, the construction of a new Senate office building moved another step ahead August 5 when the state completed the sale of $85 million in bonds to finance the project. The building, to be located across University Avenue just north of the Capital building, will contain offices for all 67 senators. That part of the project is expected to cost state taxpayers $77 million, with the additional money going for an adjacent parking ramp that will be paid for by user fees.

Initial planning money for the project was contained in the omnibus tax bill passed two years ago in the final days of session. Including the project in the tax bill drew the ire of many, as the building was not part of the bonding bill, which is how most capital projects are funded. It wasn’t until this past year that the House Rules Committee, the majority of whose members are DFL, gave the project its final approval.

In addition to the unusual initial funding, those opposed to the project question whether the building is even

needed. The desire for more space came about because of a major remodeling project taking place in the Capital building itself. That $272 million job is expected to take several years, and has made many parts of the building inaccessible. And since the majority party’s senators have traditionally utilized office space in the Capital, they needed to find alternative space during the renovation project.

However, the timing doesn’t make sense. By the time this new office building is complete, the Capital restoration project should be nearly done, as well.

The new office building will not be able to house anybody during the majority of the time the Capital is being worked on, and that was the initial reason for its construction! The senators who have been displaced by the Capital restoration project have found other space for their offices.

The city of Brooten received good news recently when MnDOT Rail announced funding for a rail crossing that serves the city’s industrial park. The crossing lights and arms will be constructed on County Road 194 to the east and south of the park where it joins Highway 55. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2016.

traffic is heavy around the area, especially during certain times of the year.

The new alignment of the road and rail crossing will greatly improve safety going into and out of the area.

Some areas received heavy rain this past weekend, while others got little or nothing. Parts of the city of Glenwood received four or more inches early Sunday morning. The harvesting of small grains has proved to be challenging this summer, as the humidity and heavy morning dews have slowed the drying process.

I have wheat left to combine, and the heavy weekend rains have lodged the grain down close to the ground, making it difficult to dry out again and also to pick up with harvesting equipment.

Feelings of being abandoned and forsaken are, perhaps, among the most painful feelings of life. In desperation we cry for someone or anyone to come to our rescue. Tragedy strikes, hopes are dashed, one whom we deeply loved and have spent our lives with is suddenly taken from us. And there we are: alone.

Our cries go unheard - and it seems as though the heavens above have turned to brass and the clouds have become marble. So, we cry out in fear and frustration for our God. But He does not answer. He’s not available.

Jesus knew those feelings. As life was ebbing from His body He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” David and Jesus felt abandoned, indeed were abandoned, by those who were their closest friends.

They had invested time in training them, being open and honest with them in sharing the ups and downs of life and had come to believe in and trust them.

And then in their darkest moments they felt the pain of desertion and the fear of being alone.

But they would not give up on God! The lamp of faith may have been dimmed by God’s silence but it had not been extinguished by life’s tragedies.

Both confessed that He is still “My God!” God never promised that if we believed in Him our lives would be free from the fear of isolation or loneliness.

He did, however, promise to be with us in our darkest moments. He did not promise to take us around the dark valleys of life, but through them.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township August 4, 2014 These are unapproved minutes.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented.

Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the July 7, 2014 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as written.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for July. Claims list included 10 claims for a total of $4,916.94.

The list included $1,402.50 for ditch mowing which was done this month. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Clerk shared mail received this month; including a letter from MN Township Association stating the District 8 meeting will be on August 20 at Wadena. Also, a reminder that the September Township meeting will be on Sept. 8, due to Labor Day. Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of July 1, 2014: $280,978.30; Checks cleared: 17, $1,928.67; Deposits including interest: $18,488.53; Balance as of July 31, 2014: $264,418.44; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $264,418.44; CD Balance: $204,239.95. Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Second by Mike. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that he and Erv H. had inspected the Angler Trail washout after the June meeting.

Ray stated that Erv will blade off the edge of the road so that the water could run off. Several trees needed to be cleaned up after the wind storm. A report was made of a landowner placing a post in the road right of way. The Supervisors asked the clerk to send a letter to the property owner to request it be

removed. Another question was raised as to drainage from a field and Ray recommended the property owner check with Soil & Water at Todd County. Tryg Hansen from DNR Parks and Trails was present to review the process for the upgrade on the Mound Lake Access Road.

In order to clear up the access issue for the property owners on Conifer Drive the road was improved so that the Township would now be responsible for the maintenance under the cooperative agreement with the State of Minnesota. The DNR contributed to the cost of the upgrade, as well as residents on Conifer Drive. This will now ensure that those property owners will have legal ingress and egress rights. The documents will be recorded once the fence and brushing issues are completed.

Additional agenda items: The Eagle Mountain liquor license application was discussed and Mike made the motion to approve the township part of this application. Ray made the second. Motion carried. A property owner along Cottontail Drive was present and had a question about road right of way. The Clerk was asked to write a letter stating that this was not a Township Road.

Public Comment: A question was raised as to what the progress was with the paving project. Ray will contact TriCity to see if the Township needs to meet with the contrac-

tor and what his schedule is.

Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting.

Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

Members present include Supervisors: Louis Thompson, Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Lonnie Marcyes, Ervin Muellner and Ervin Herdering.

Sup. Thompson made a motion to approve the minutes from the regular meeting of June 24, 2014. Motion was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Correspondence included notice of a District 8 meeting and a Planning and Zoning meeting.

With the primary election coming up the board agreed to set up voting booths on Monday, August 11 at 5 p.m. For the voting lights the board agreed to put in florescent fixtures.

In the road report dust control should be completed and contractor will only blade as needed on extra sprayed areas.

321st Ave needs more clay and more gravel by culvert. 210th St was discussed more and the power company already cleared more trees. With the storms that went through the board and

contractors will watch for more trees that need to be trimmed back. There was a complaint of a resident on 331st Ave having fence too close to the road so a supervisor will contact him.

The board heard complaint of road grading not wide enough on 150th St. The supervisors finished weed inspections with no serious problems.

The board inspected access added by Randy Friese and approved to add gravel.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $101,589.33. Treasurer’s report was approved by

Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Clerk notified board she will destroy election papers older than 22 months as outlined in the state record retention.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded

by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:46 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on August 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

By Val Cervenka, DNR Forest Health Program Coordinator Q: I hear a lot about invasive insects like emerald ash borer and gypsy moths, but what are some of the good bugs that help keep our forests healthy?

A: There are many more beneficial insects than insect pests; we just don’t hear about them as often. One beneficial insect, the friendly fly, is named for its habit of repeatedly landing on people without biting. The larvae of this fly feed on forest tent caterpillars inside their cocoons. During the third or fourth year of a caterpillar outbreak in Minnesota, the friendly fly can kill nearly 90 percent of the cocoons.

Parasitic wasps also keep insect populations in check. Most parasitic wasps are extremely small, which is why we don’t usually see them at work.

There are thousands of different species, none of which sting people, but nearly every insect species is attacked by parasitic wasps during at least one life stage.

Beneficial wasps feed on pests such as spruce budworm, gypsy moth, fall webworm and emerald ash borer.

Many types of beetles, the largest and most diverse group of insects, are predacious and feed on aphids, scale insects, caterpillars, other beetles and

A rich millionaire throws a massive party for his 50th birthday. During this party, he grabs the microphone and announces to his guests that down in the garden of his mansion he has a swimming pool with two great white sharks in it.

“I will give anything of mine to the person who swims across that pool.”

So the party continues with no events in the pool until SUDDENLY there’s a great splash and all the guests of the party run to the pool to see what has happened.

In the pool a man is swimming as hard as he can - fins come out of the water and jaws are snapping and this guy just keeps on going. The sharks are gaining on him and this guy reaches the end and gets out of the pool, tired and soaked.

The millionaire grabs the microphone and says, “I am a man of my word. Anything of mine I will give: my Ferraris, my house, absolutely anything, for you are the bravest man I have ever seen. So sir what will it be?”

Breathless the guy grabs the microphone and says, “Why don’t we start with the name of the jerk who pushed me in!”
