The weight of our words -By Harvey Mackay There was a young boy who liked to gossip.

His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he gossiped, he should hammer a nail into the back fence.

The first day, the boy drove 37 nails into the fence. They gradually dwindled down.

He discovered it was easier to hold his tongue than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn’t gossip at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he exercised restraint.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the

same. When you say things about other people, they leave scars just like these.”

Think of gossip like the game most of us played as children, where everyone sits in a circle and one person starts by whispering something in the next person’s ear. That person then whispers what they heard in the next person’s ear, and so on, until the last person is reached. The last person then tells what he or she heard. It’s often fun to see how the initial message changes drastically and quickly.

“Some people will believe anything if it is whispered to them,” said Pierre de Marivaux, French playwright from the 18th century.

Gossip and rumors have probably been part of the workplace culture since the days of the Pyramids. (“Psst! I heard Cleopatra and that Roman dude are an item! Pass it on!”) Although a certain amount of personal chitchat goes on in any workplace, gossiping employees can erode trust among co-workers and infect a team with dissension and hostility.

To keep rumors from gaining a foothold in your organization, follow

this advice: • Improve general communications.

Employees will believe rumors if they don’t have access to facts. Even in tough times, give your people as much information as you can so they can rely on solid data, not half-truths. If you can’t share news, explain why, so you don’t appear to be hiding anything.

• Confront rumors directly. If you catch wind of an untrue rumor, go to the source and set him or her straight, explaining the damage that false information can cause. Clear up the confusion with your entire workforce right away. They may think twice about spreading or believing rumors if they know you’re ready to step in.

• Set the right example. Don’t listen to gossip that comes your way.

Either correct any misinformation immediately, or explain that you’re not interested in rumors. Don’t pass along any unsubstantiated stories yourself.

Let the gossip stop with you. If people persist in spreading rumors, suggest that they need more work to do.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Cars Cars today are not like they were in past years.

Originally, cars were created for only one purpose and that was to get from one place to another. They were originally 4 wheels, an engine, a transmission, a seat, a windshield and some kind of brakes. The ability to start the vehicle with a crank was available through the 1930’s.

As engineering improved the cars, they were equipped with a roof and enclosed sides with doors and windows.

To warn other people on the road that you were going to stop or make a turn, you needed to extend your arm out of the window on the driver’s side.

Extending the arm straight out indicated a left turn, turning the arm up at the elbow indicated a right turn and the arm extended straight down was a warning that you were going to stop. The driver usually avoided these signals if it was cold, raining or if they just didn’t feel like doing it. Even in early days, those on the passenger seat would sternly admonish the male driver that he had failed to signal.

As time went by, new improvements began to appear. The heater began to actually produce warm air. The windshield wipers began to be powered by electricity instead of engine vacuum creating a regular wiping rhythm. Many

cars were equipped with a 12 volt electrical system, which improved night vision. Turn signals became standard equipment. Radios, air conditioning and automatic transmissions became available for additional money.

They were actually becoming more comfortable and fun to drive.

Safety for the automobile passengers then became apparent. The auto industry eliminated the “suicide doors” which opened toward the front of the car and replaced them with rear doors, which opened toward the back of the car. Now the rear seat passengers weren’t thrown from the car when the rear door was opened while the car was moving. Seat belts were installed to avoid being ejected from the car. Padded dash boards were included, so that when your head was headed toward the dash board at a great speed, you would have the protection of an inch of foam as padding; before the metal dashboard readjusted the circumference of your head.

Collapsible steering columns made the driver safer in the event of a front end crash. Breaking systems and tires were greatly improved.

Through the years the auto industry has attempted to make their vehicles safer, but we still find ways to endanger ourselves with them. It has been said that horsepower was safer when the horses had it, but that statement has also been proven not to be true.

who talked trash about someone else unwittingly painted themselves with the same brush. When queried, recipients of gossip (the listeners) consistently attributed any negative traits they heard about a third party to the person delivering the gossip. The finding held even when listeners were told that the statements did not describe the person doing the sniping.

On the bright side: The same is true when the talk is positive. Believe it or not, not all gossip has to be bad. The grapevine can be a valuable source of information that can help you in your career.

Consider that some gossip can be intentional leaks of information you should know, and if you learn who is worth listening to, you can develop a sense of what’s ahead for your organization.

Listen thoughtfully, and don’t feel like you have to add a comment.

Adding grist to the mill may come back to haunt you, so hold your tongue and weigh the information you are receiving before you pass judgment.

Think of gossip like soft butter. It’s easy to spread and adds a little flavor

to just about everything. But trying to “unspread” it is just about impossible.

There is always a little residue left behind, a greasy spot that’s hard to clean up.

Think about that before you try to butter someone up with a little juicy gossip.

Obituary Patricia C. “Patty” Seifert Patricia C. “Patty” Seifert , age 57 of Grey Eagle, passed away u n e x p e c t e d l y, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church in Grey Eagle.

Patricia Catherine Seifert was born March 9, 1962 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Francis and Mary Anne (Blasey) Seifert. She graduated from Grey Eagle High School and continued her education at Moorhead State University. She began working in the Twin

Cities at Unisys as a computer programmer and then at Quicksilver as a courier. Currently she was working at Update Building Supplies in Grey Eagle as a bookkeeper.

Patty was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle where she was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, and sang in the choir. She helped out with the church’s annual Auction/Dinner, was very active with Catholic United Financial, and secretary of the Christian Women. She enjoyed politics and was involved in the Republican party.

In her younger years, she enjoyed volleyball.

Patty could always be counted on to help out in any capacity. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her brothers and sisters, Mary Anne (Bernie) Schroeder, Trudy (Jerry) McCornack, Jim (Margie) Seifert, Charles (Diane) Seifert, Tony (Maddie) Seifert, Agnes (Jim) Jensen, Loretta Winter, and Richard (Cheryl) Seifert; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marie Seifert; and brother, John Seifert.

Dear Dave, What is your opinion on micro investing apps like Acorns and Betterment? Are these good vehicles for building wealth in the long term, and are there any major drawbacks to these types of services?

-Alex Dear Alex, I’m not saying there’s anything really wrong with Acorns or Betterment, but they do different things. Acorns is more of an invest pennies, round-up kind of program, where Betterment is kind of a robo-investing deal.

Here’s the thing. Micro investing is going to create micro wealth. And the big downside is you’re going to feel like you did something important.

The way you end up with money is by investing money. The way you end up with more money is by investing more money. You can argue all you want that using things like these create extra money. Yeah, but not really. The returns are still micro. An app doesn’t make two dollars turn into twenty dollars.

It’s okay to use apps like that. I’m not mad at them, and I don’t think they’re a rip-off or anything like that.

What worries me about these kinds of things, in an investing sense, is they give the illusion that you’ve done something significant with your money.

Dear Dave, My husband and I have been married five years, and we’ve decided we want to have children.

We’ve both been working full time since our wedding, and we were wondering if we should adjust our emergency fund and retirement investing to accommodate all the upcoming life changes that go along with having a bigger family.

-Rachel Dear Rachel, When it comes to an emergency fund, I’d stick with what I recommend in the Baby Steps. A good emergency fund of three to six months of expenses should be fine. If you feel safer leaning toward the six-month side, that’s fine.

As far as investing is concerned, that’s Baby Step 4. This means 15 percent of your household income going toward retirement. None of that really changes.

Now, with another person in the house, your day-to-day expenses are going to increase. That’ll make it even more important to make sure you’re living on a written monthly budget.

What you don’t want to do, is quit your job to come home and be a full-time mom, then find yourselves dipping into the emergency fund. Being a stay-athome mom is fine. It’s a wonderful thing if you can afford it. But if that’s the plan you need to budget accordingly, and practice living on just your husband’s income before you quit your job.

Upsala Area Community Center Update Letter to the Editor

Our relationship with NSI ended as of 07-31-19. So, we’re on our own starting August 2, 2019. We are confident that we’ll be able to continue with our primary commodity provider (US Foods).

We have purchased our own Workman’s Comp. Insurance and appropriate food license.

Breakfasts will continue on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 7:00 to 10:00 am. with the possibility of added items on the menu. Right now we have two fine young women taking orders, but when school starts they will not be able to continue. Interested? Call Bill Krivanek at 573-2231 or the Center at 573-4435. No reservations required.

Lunch will be changing somewhat.

Rather than serving only at 11:30, the serving hour will be from 11:30-12:30. It will still be necessary to call the day before, or earlier, but by extending the serving hour we hope to attract a few business people to join us for lunch. You will be able to walk in the door, claim your lunch and sit down at a table and eat, or perhaps “take it out” to your place of business or just outside. Reservations required.

I have retired as Manager of the Upsala Area Community Center as of June 30. We are looking for a replacement. Interested? Call Bill Krivanek at 573-2231 or the Center at 573-4435.

The Upsala Area Community Center will not have a source of financial support, so we are dependent on contributions, cash, materials such as coffee, toilet paper, various groceries and other products. There is a memorial plaque wall in the center created by donations in various amounts, but we will always take anything you can offer.

Various fund raisers are held by the UACC. Our biggest fundraiser is the Waffle Feed held during Heritage Days at the Upsala High School before, during, and after the community worship service, on August 11. Tickets are available at the door, or purchased in advance at the UACC or by calling Bill Krivanek at 5732231 or the Center at 573-4435.

We also have Brat Fundraisers, held at various times in the summer, at Paul and Kathy’s Grocery Store.

There are two Silent Auctions held at the UACC, one in the fall and one in the spring.

We are also offering the rental of the UACC for various events: birthday parties, showers, retirement parties, Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, etc. The UACC is also available for classes or conferences, or any such arrangement, most likely for no charge.

We hope many people will find the UACC an acceptable location for many different reasons.

Be More Respectful on the Roads

By Robert Kutter, Grey Eagle I walked alongside a parade unit in the GEM Fest Parade on July 21 in Grey Eagle along with some other adults and children. At the intersection of Minnesota Highways 28 and 287, an anxious fisherman pulled in front of the unit to cross to The Junction. At the next to last turn in the parade route, a man and woman on a motorcycle wove in and out around parade units to get on their way north on Todd County 102. I reacted with fear and anger. I feared for the lives of the children and adults walking in the parade, and I was angry that people are so impatient at a parade interrupting their route.

fraud. The victim is out just over $62,000.00.

Investigators will diligently work this case to see if we can recover any of the funds. There are a couple of warning signs here to remember. Publisher’s Clearing House will not call to notify you of winning. They probably will just show up or if it’s a smaller prize, they will mail a check. Second, and most important, you don’t have to pay taxes prior to claiming the prize. That pain comes when you receive the winnings or later when your tax person gives you the bad news. A handwritten envelope for something like this should give you some pause as well. Always proceed cautiously with a situation like this. Again, when in doubt, call law enforcement. As a side note, I saw a recent news story that gave the odds of winning the big Publisher’s Prize as 1 in 6 billion. The Power Ball’s odds are way better.

Fraud: On July 24th, Deputy Peggy Engler responded to a fraud report in Millwood Township. This particular fraud is one that has been used before, but we haven’t heard it recently. The victim was contacted by a person representing themselves as being from Publisher’s Clearing House. The victim was told he had won the drawing, but he needed to pay his taxes first. This occurred on June 6th and the following day he sent off his first check.

The victim received a second call on June 12th.

He told the caller he needed proof he won. Several days later, in a hand addressed envelope, he received numerous pages of documentation indicating he had won the drawing of $4.5 million. From June 12th to July 22nd, the victim sent seven more checks to various addresses to satisfy the taxes. The last mailing was intercepted by FedEx and reported to our office as

gestion, yet there are 28 residences that need to access County 2 in that zone. At the point where County 2 intersects with County 33, there is a stop sign, which to many drivers is just another suggestion.

In the past, I walked and biked on local county roads but have not done so for two years because I no longer trust drivers who I often see talking on cell phones. A hands free law that goes into effect August 1 does not make me feel more secure because too many drivers believe the chance of a law enforcement ticket on rural roads is slim to none.

I understand that we are a busy, impatient, hurried people, but I hope all of us who use the roads could be more respectful of others and of the laws of the road, which are intended to keep us safe.

Moldy birdseed and unclean bird feeders can make birds sick. Homeowners who enjoy feeding birds can takes steps to help birds stay healthy, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

In the spring and especially in warm, humid weather, it is common for mold to form on wet birdseed. The mold can cause an avian disease called aspergillosis, which affects the birds’ respiratory systems. Salmonella is another disease that affects birds and is associated with unclean feeders. Both diseases can be fatal to birds.

To clean a feeder, use a solution of one part bleach and nine parts water, and scrub the entire surface. Always allow the cleaned feeder to dry out in the sun, as the sunlight will help kill bacteria on the feeder. Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned about every week to 10 days during the summer, to keep the sugar water from producing mold.

Program urges bird enthusiasts to also rake or sweep up any fallen seeds and seed hulls under their feeder to prevent moldy conditions from occurring on the ground. Seeds left on the ground can also attract meadow voles, house mice, other rodents, raccoons, deer and even bears.

Keep the feed dry by using a hopper-type feeder or a fly-through feeder, and always scrape out old seed that accumulates in the corners. Tray feeders with a screen bottom will allow seeds to dry out from above and below after a rain shower, but thick layers of seed could still trap moisture, so consider more frequent fillings with less seed.

But “Why” is an important question.

David addresses the “Why” question quite frequently. In Psalm 86, however, he makes an observation and then answers it with “why.”

He wrote, “I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart; I will glorify Your name forever.” Then he adds the why for us: “For great is Your love toward me; You have delivered me from the depths of the grave.”

“Praise” and “glorify” are a most important part of our worship. When we look at these two verses together, we find an important reason to remind us why we worship God: it is because of His love and mercy.

We may not know what he is referring to when He said that “God delivered me from the depths of the grave.”

And perhaps that’s good. What’s don’t matter - God does! There are many days when we feel we are about to be “buried alive.” Then, God delivers us.

It’s time to worship.

There are aftermarket kits out there to do just what you want. These kits have many features like individual tire pressure, low or high-pressure alerts and more. The features depend on the price you pay for the unit. Many people monitor every wheel on the vehicle and trailer. The units can be very easy to install yourself and can be found at many truck stops, camping centers, and parts stores. Knowing your pressures is a great way to increase your safety.

time to see If my car was equipped with one. My vents started to blow much weaker over the past few months and I just kept turning up the dial until I could not get the car to cool off. I was not able to get in right away to have it checked and I started hearing a rattle noise under my hood when I had the defroster or air conditioning on. Once I had time to get it to the shop, they told me my air conditioning compressor had failed and it would cost $1400.00 to repair it in addition to the $15.00 cabin air filter which they will install for free with the repair. Why would a dirty air filter cause a bad compressor? Some cars don’t even have a filter.

-Myron in Valentine, Nebraska Dear Myron, The filter needs to be changed regularly or it will restrict airflow. When it gets severely restricted the evaporator core for the air conditioning may get so cold that oil in the system will not flow well and it is possible that in some cases it could damage the system. Usually the pressure switch in the system would shut it down but we don’t know all your details. If you have a cabin air filter check its condition regularly.

Grey Eagle City June 11, 2019 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of June 2019 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt and Thom Muellner. Council members Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp were absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Tim and Barb Ainali.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the May 14, 2019 meeting as written. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

At 7:03 p.m. council member Brian Hollenkamp joined the meeting.

The council discussed the current subdivision ordinance as a response to a letter to the editor in the Hometown News. County ordinances do not apply to property located within the city and prior to any subdivision ordinance taking effect the county did not approve any property line adjustments in the city. The city must abide by State Statutes and can be more restrictive than these statutes but cannot be less restrictive. Any possible changes to the ordinance may be done after consideration by the council and under the guidance of the City Attorney.

Chico reported that there were no issues this past month and lawn mowing is going well.

The council discussed possible recycling. In order to have this service provided by Tom’s Refuse, it would require 100% participation, and an additional cost of $3 per month per resident. The Clerk was instructed to contact Tom’s Refuse to see if other options would be available.

The council reviewed the court fines list provided by the City Attorney. A motion was made

by Brian Hollenkamp to impose a $75 fine for each violation of the following city ordinances: unreasonable acceleration, unreasonable breaking, no muffler – recreational vehicle, illegal parking of semi or semitrailer, illegal parking, parking in restrictive area, continuous parking, loading zone violation, animal running at large, and failure to clean up animal waste. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed property clean up. Follow up letters will be sent to those where no effort has been made to clean- up, letters will be sent for properties that have not mowed the lawns and unlicensed vehicles. The City Clerk has been in contact with the corporate office for Dollar General regarding the un-mowed lawn.

The council discussed the status of the chickens that were being kept. It appears that the residents have complied with the letter. The council would like to remind residents that farm animals are not allowed unless approved by resolution by the Council.

The council discussed the outof-state travel policy. This policy is only for elected officials as a City employee would need to seek approval to attend training. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the Out-of-State Travel Policy for Elected Officials. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

After some discussion by the Council it was determined that they would not be hosting National Night Out. The council will revisit this for next year.

The council discussed the culvert on Minnesota Street West and

Lake Street. Chico will take care of the removal of the trees.

A building permit was approved by Mayor Joseph Arnzen for Jim Tschida to put in a cement slab for a hot tub and for a 12’ x 24’ portable shed. The placement of the cement slab/hot tub and the portable shed will need to abide by the setback requirements.

The Council is waiting on a quote from Mick Flood before making any decisions on the old City Hall.

The council discussed wages for the 2020 budget. The Clerk is requesting more paid health insurance in lieu of a pay increase. The city is required to pay a minimum of 50% of any group health plan where eligible employees are required to work 30 hours per week or more to qualify.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve covering 75% of employee health coverage beginning January 1, 2020. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve $1.00 per hour increase effective January 1, 2020 for the part time/seasonal employee. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed the maintenance position. Chico informed the council at a previous meeting that he would be retiring effective February 1, 2020. The Council will need to discuss what the future of this position will be and how to best serve the City before they will be ready to take applications.

The council discussed unpaid training for the members of the Fire Department. The discussion has been whether they are volunteering their time, or considering it unpaid training. While there may be pros and cons surrounding this, when a vehicle leaves the Fire Hall, they are conducting official Fire Department duties with City equipment and needs to be compensated for the time as well as being covered by City insurance.

City insurance protects the vehicle as well as any property owned by other individuals if there is an accident, as well as providing for workers compensation insurance if the Fire Department members were injured in any way. The council also discussed whether or not Fire Equipment should be used to haul water to private individuals.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt that any time Fire equipment leaves the hall, the members will be compensated their hourly rate of pay and that no Fire equipment will be used to haul water to private individuals. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve vacation for Clerk and Maintenance Supervisor July 22-28. Matt will cover for Chico and John will take care of the day to day tasks. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

PJ Signs submitted a proposed new design for the community sign and quoted $100 per sign per side. A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the sign design at the quoted price. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed what would be allowed on the community sign. This sign will only be used for community events and no personal items will be allowed.

Mayor Joseph Arnzen reported that he received a complaint regarding Brinkman Street. The council will take a look at the area and discuss at the July meeting.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the temporary liquor license for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for July 21st and 22nd. A second was made

by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the following fund transfer: $148.25 from General Fund of which $31.25 goes to the Water Fund and $117 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall, Old City Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of the bills as listed and to include the payment of the following additional items: $26,579.32 to Central Minnesota Credit Union to pay off Fire Hall Debt Service, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union for employee HSA contributions and $207.13 to First State Bank of Swanville for interest due on Interim Financing. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and

upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

How to help your teen start budgeting

By Anthony O’Neal In order to win in life, your teen is going to need a solid plan for everything—including their money!

If they learn to budget today, they can avoid some common money mistakes and start building a strong financial future ASAP. They might need a friendly push to get started, so here are a few things that will help get them motivated.

Why budgeting matters Your teen is probably pumped to get a taste of the real world, whether that means getting their first job or getting out of your house and into a college dorm.

But before they get too caught up in dreaming about their new freedom, they need to realize that freedom comes with responsibility.

Trust me, I’ve been where they are now. When I first started living on my own, I didn’t have a clue about how to balance my income and expenses, much less how to think about long-term financial goals. Living without a plan got me in some serious trouble. Luckily, my dad saw what was happening and jumped in with some wisdom. He showed me exactly how to create a plan for my income and expenses.

I know that for your teen, the thought of writing a regular budget sounds like as much fun as an all-nighter cramming for a calculus final. But becoming a budgeter was the best financial decision I ever made. Not only did budgeting take away a lot of stress, it also helped me move toward financial peace and achieve my dreams.

How to budget Now that the why behind budgeting is clear, let’s jump into the how. Writing out a zero-based budget every month is your teen’s blueprint for financial success. Tell them not to get intimidated.

A zero-based budget just means they’re creating a complete plan for all their spending ahead of time. It’s like they’re giving every dollar they earn a job to do.

Here’s a simple budgeting plan you can give them: Step 1: Have them list all their income sources for the month. They should include paychecks from work or side jobs, plus any extra financial support they get from family. Add it all up. If your teen doesn’t have an income, and needs some extra cash this summer, I have a list of great summer jobs for them to check out at anthonyoneal.com.

Step 2: Have them list every expense they’re going to have for the month. Here are some examples of what they might want to include: -School fees -Rent (unless they live at home) -Food (unless you still cook for them. Lucky them!)

-Clothing -Gas -Entertainment -Savings -Emergency fund/savings Step 3: Have them total up their expenses, and subtract that number from their total income. Do they get zero? If they’ve got money left over, great! It can go into savings. If not, that just means they need to find a way to make more money or spend less money on some of their expenses.

And that’s it! It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds.

Here’s my last tip. Tell your teen not to get discouraged if every little thing doesn’t work as planned the first month.

That’s totally normal. It might take a few months, but with your help they’ll work out the kinks over time. And as they do, I know they’re going to have the freedom and confidence to take on whatever’s coming their way!

Operation Round Up Contributes $24,964 to 45 Local Organizations

Stearns Electric’s Operation Round Up Program contributed $24,964 to area organizations during its July meeting.

Through the Operation Round Up program, Stearns Electric Association gives its member-consumers the opportunity to give back to the community by rounding up their electric bill to the nearest dollar.

Since the program’s inception in 1993, Operation Round Up (ORU) and Stearns Electric members have awarded over $2.3 million to local non-profit organizations and community service programs. The round up funds, no more than $11.88 per year, per member, are placed in a trust fund that is administered by the Trust Board appointed by the Cooperative’s elected Board of Directors.

Trust Board members met on July 10 to review applications and funding requests for the second time in 2019.

Forty-five organizations were selected to receive funds totaling between $100 to $2,000 in this round of contributions.

New Laws That Take Effect August 1

By Representative Ron Kresha This Thursday, August 1st, a number of new laws are set to go into effect, and I wanted to take a moment to let you know about some of them.

One of the publicized new laws is the “handsfree” law, which prohibits holding cell phones and other wireless communication devices while behind the wheel of a car. The new law allows drivers to use a cell phone to make calls, text, listen to music and get directions, but only using voice commands or single-touch activation, without holding the phone.

There are exceptions for obtaining emergency assistance if there is a threat to life and safety, or when in an authorized emergency vehicle while performing official duties.

Provider-based clinics will now need to disclose facility fees for non-emergency services before treatment, to ensure patients are not surprised by additional charges related to the use of the facility, which result in higher out-of-pocket costs.

A new law prohibits retaliation against residents or employees of a nursing home or a housing with services establishment who intends to file a complaint, reports maltreatment, or participates in a legal proceeding, among other protected actions.

Community emergency medical technicians will now be permitted to serve on a basic life support ambulance service, and services provided by community paramedics via telemedicine will now be covered under Medical Assistance.

The omnibus transportation bill included a requirement that slow vehicles must stay on the right side of the road and move out of the left-most lane to allow others to pass when practicable.

A new law allows an officer to issue a citation to a driver if a work zone flagger has reported a traffic violation, such as speeding or violating traffic flagger directions.

Light rail train drivers will now be subject to reckless and careless driving laws, with penalties of a fine of up to $3,000 and imprisonment for up to one year if a violation causes great bodily harm or death.

There is a new requirement that Beginning Farmer Loan borrowers must be enrolled in a farm management program or have completed one within their first 10 years of farming.

If a person fails a test to determine if they are operating a motor vehicle under the influence, their snowmobile, ATV, and motorboat operating privileges will now be revoked.
