There was a barn fire last week at the Peter Wuertz residence just north west of Spring Hill. Both Lake Henry and Elrosa fire departments responded. The fire was speculated to have been caused by lightning. The cows were able to get out before the building went down. The milking facility was a total loss, and they lost some calves in the fire. This is a good explanation for why people are so long-winded. It’s easier.

You don’t need to think and prepare as much. Just let it roll.

Maybe that’s why William Shakespeare said, “Brevity is the soul of wit.”

One thing I know is that brevity is powerful. People who can speak or write concisely and to the point are more successful.

The late comedian George Burns was right on when he said, “The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two as close together as possible.”

I have a little different take on preparation. The nature of my public speaking engagements usually requires me to present for longer periods. But that doesn’t mean I don’t need to be completely ready and well-researched to keep my points brief and interesting.

If I have to make a 60-minute speech on a new subject, I figure it will take 60 hours of preparation. It’s almost one hour of preparation for every minute, if you want your message to be good. You never want your audience to wonder if you will ever stop talking. You want to leave them wanting more – more fabulous content, not just more words.

Are you one of those people for whom conveying information can sometimes turn into the unraveling of a saga? Here are some tips adapted from iVillage.com on how to keep your conversations short and sweet when necessary.

• Don’t get bogged down with irrelevant details. Get to the meat of the information as directly as possible.

“I talked with Jim Thursday, or was it Wednesday? No, I think it was Thursday …” Does anyone really care? Get to the point.

• Don’t repeat information. Unless the person with whom you’re talking indicates that he or she didn’t hear what you said, say things only once. I can’t tell you how many times I hear the same message repeated over and over with different words. Don’t rehash old news.

• Take a writing class. A good writing class can teach you to make your points using the fewest words possible. The training can also benefit your spoken communications.

• Eliminate non-word fillers. I am very aware (and annoyed) when people use too many “ums” … “likes” … and “you knows.” It’s better to pause briefly and say nothing.

• Bring up information that is relevant to most of the group. Save Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Sulfuring

A couple of my readers called and spoke about sulfuring food as a preservative procedure. I was interested in the process, since the only thing I did with sulfur was to light a sulfur candle and put it in the bottom of a hollow tree and watch the squirrels or coon come out to get away from the awful stink it created.

After doing some research and making some phone calls, I found that sulfuring fruits and vegetables is still done today. Many of the dried fruits at the market have been exposed to sulfur wash, sulfur steam or sulfur smoke.

Sulfuring preserves the fruits color and prevents spoilage. A food scientist explained that a fruit has natural ability to defend itself if it is attacked by insects. It produces a substance to discourage and in some cases harm the attacker. Sulfur restricts the production of these defense measures, including becoming overripe and therefore the fruit maintains the appearance and condition it was at the

time of it’s exposure to sulfur.

I don’t know when using sulfur as a preservative began, but it possibly has been used for over 1000 years. How the process was discovered was not explained.

One of my readers said her mother would peel and slice apples (as for pie), and put about 2 inches of apple slices on the bottom of a stone crock. A plate with a small amount of sulfur was placed on top of the apples and lit on fire. A cover was placed on the crock to both keep the smoke in the crock and also keep the strong stink out of the house. Another spoke of sulfuring out on the porch, due to the smell. One remembers buying apricots and peaches and preserving them with sulfur and then drying them.

I was told that some individuals must avoid a sulfured fruit or vegetable because their body reacts to a sulfured product.

Sulfuring was new and interesting to me and maybe someone can recall the process from years past. My impression was that it was quite common.

any questions specific to you or any specialized conversations for later discussion.

Here’s a grand example of when short is sweet. One of the most memorable Academy Award acceptance speeches was delivered by Patty Duke, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “The Miracle Worker.” She uttered just two words: Thank you.

If all the winners were so succinct, the entire program would last about an hour instead of three or four.

But my choice for best short speech ever goes to Winston Churchill, Great Britain’s prime minister during World War II. He led the British through the darkest days of the war, rallying spirits with his soaring rhetoric.

Churchill, rarely recognized as a man of few words, was invited to address the graduating class of Oxford University in his later years. Following his introduction, he walked to the lectern and simply said, “Never, never, never give up.” Then he sat down.

Memorable? Absolutely.

The lesson in writing for newspapers is always “Be brief!” However, a certain beginner in journalism picked up what seemed to him to be a big story. He hurried to text his editor what he had

The editor responded promptly, “Go ahead and write 600 words.”

The enthusiastic young reporter was depressed and fired back a text, “Story can’t be told in less than 1,200 words.”

The editor’s reply said, “Story of world’s creation was told in 600 words.

Try it.”

Obituaries Rose Magdalen Jonas Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 14, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring, MN for Rose Magdalen Jonas, age 86, who died Wednesday at her home in Cold Spring.

Rose was born in Richmond, MN to Hubert and Anna (Simons) Barthel. She married Sylvester J. Jonas on June 19, 1954 in the St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring, MN. Rose was a homemaker. She drove truck for the family milk truck business, was a school bus driver, and a daycare provider for

Richard “Dick” Boyer Richard J. “Dick” Boyer, age 87, of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, August 11, 2017 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

F a m i l y will be holding private services at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls to honor Richard’s years of service.

Richard Jerome Boyer was born September 4, 1929 in Page, Nebraska to Oscar and Laura (Lueth) Boyer. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in January of 1955. Richard served during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands between Russia and Alaska. Shortly after being discharged Richard married Neola Wesely on April 12, 1955 at St. Mary’s in Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Nebraska for several years.

Rose loved cooking, flowers, crocheting afghans and visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, She is survived by her children, Carol (Sam) Tschida, Avon, Paul (Shelley), St. Joseph, Peter (Tina), South Haven, Larry, Sartell, Mary Joan (Paul Sandell) Jonas, South Haven, Theresa (Steve) Todd, St. Cloud, Judy (Mark) Spies, Sartell, Linda Jonas-Brown, St Joseph; sister, Dorothy Eisenschenk, Richmond; brother in-law, Marcellus Schreifels, Cold Spring; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and her beloved dog, Sweet Pea. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sylvester; son-in-law, Darby Brown; grandson Sean Jonas; siblings, Clem (Christine) Barthel, Osmund (Gertrude and Becky) Barthel, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Eisenschenk, Sr. Aidan Barthel, OSB, Raymond Barthel, Marie Schreifels, Margaret (Clarence) Schreifels.

Fire and Rescue Squad. He and Neola owned a lawn and snow business called Boyer Lawn Service for 13 years. When Richard and Neola moved to Minnesota in 1971 they bought a dairy farm by Eagle Bend. They kept the farm for 25 years before retiring and moving to Melrose.

Richard was known for his woodwork.

He hand crafted many treasures filling his home, and the homes of his family, with beautiful woodwork. He also had a joy for collecting firearms and would shoot clay targets with his children and grandchildren.

Richard was a firm believer of the 2nd amendment. Richard was an avid reader of western novels and loved telling stories from the past.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years.

Neola Boyer of Melrose; children, Deb Sletten (Doug) of Gonvick, Kate BoyerEndres (Tom) of Greeley, CO, Rick Boyer (Carol) of Melrose, and Barb Stueve (John) of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren (and one on the way); sister, Deloris Kyncl of Elkhorn, NE; and his beloved dog Truman who was at his side at the end.

Richard will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

R o b e r t “Bob” Charles Budde, age 93, of Albany passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 16 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating and Rev. Edward Vebelun, O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Albany American Legion.

Robert was born June 15, 1924 to Bernard and Frances (Moening) Budde in Avon, Minnesota. Bob proudly served in the US Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in the Philippine Islands. Bob was united in marriage to Ella Keppers on August 30, 1960 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Together they lovingly raised five children on their dairy farm west of Albany, where he enjoyed working the land and tending to the animals.

They moved off the farm in 1994, but you couldn’t take the farmer out of him. He continued to help his eldest son on the farm until he was in his late 80’s. Prior to farming, he co-owned and operated Budde Trucking for several years with his brother, Cyril.

Bob was a gentle man who had a great smile and a sense of humor that was enjoyed by all. He loved his family and

enjoyed pheasant and deer hunting, old-time dancing (especially to The Jolly Fishermen), bowling, playing cards, watching the Twins, an occasional trip to the casino, and spending time with his family and friends.

Bob was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Albany American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ella Budde, of Albany; children and grandchildren, Lori (Dennis) Rolfs— Lindsey, Maggie (Derek) Berggren, and Abby of Maple Grove, Ron (Doris) Budde— Nick, Chris, and Katie of Albany, Randy (Denise) Budde—Kaela, Gabby, Nathan, and Emily of Sauk Rapids, Krista Budde (Mark Eckel) of Anoka, and Jerry (Lisa) Budde— Angela and Carson of Windsor Heights, IA; sisters, Rita (Bill) Ryan of Minneapolis, Vonnie (Art) Diedrich of Avon, MaryAnn (Eddie) Waletzko of Waite Park, Corrine Szafranski of St. Cloud; and sisters-in-law, Donna Budde of St. Cloud and Marge Budde of Avon.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Janelle Budde; brothers and sister, Alvin, Cyril, Ralph, Arthur, and Jean Budde; sisters-in-law, Elenor Budde and Delores Budde; and brother-in-law, Dave Szafranski.

Casket bearers were Ron Budde, Randy Budde, Jerry Budde, Dennis Rolfs, Mark Eckel, Nick Budde, Chris Budde and Nathan Budde. Cross bearer was Abby Rolfs and scripture bearer was Gabby Budde. Placing of the pall was Ella Budde, Lori Rolfs and Krista Budde. Readers were Maggie Berggren and Kaela Budde and gift bearers were Katie Budde, Emily Budde, Angela Budde and Carson Budde.

Rep. Anderson reminds parents about back-to-school tax benefits With back-to-school shopping in full swing, Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, is reminding Minnesota parents about tax benefits for their 2017 Minnesota tax return for many school supplies. Minnesota has both a credit and a subtraction for education expenses.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue has reminded families interested in claiming these tax benefits to save all receipts related to school supplies.

“The big thing is to make sure you save those receipts so you have them handy when tax season arrives,” Anderson said. “This is a way many people can increase the amount of their tax return and I encourage those who can take advantage of this opportunity to do so.”

Most school supplies qualify for the credit or subtraction, including writing utensils, textbooks, and musical instrument rentals. Common items that do not qualify for the subtraction or credit include school lunches, uniforms, backpacks, and more. Parents are encouraged

to check the Department of Revenue website to determine which expenses qualify.

While the education subtraction is not subject to income limits, the credit is limited to households with incomes less than $37,500 for families with one to two children, $39,500 for families with three children, and adding $2,000 per child for families with four or more children. According to the Department of Revenue, more than 43,000 families took advantage of the education credit saving an average of $242. In all, nearly 200,000 families took advantage of the education subtraction.

Roller Coaster Rides -By Sheila Ripplinger Statewide citizen science event These summer months are so full of making precious memories with family and friends. So many choices of fun activities. Camping, picnics, parades, carnivals, lake and pool fun! Some people enjoy amusement parks, however I am not one of those people. I was always grateful that my kids could get that opportunity with the church’s youth group so I could opt out. I especially strongly dislike roller coaster rides! I have been persuaded to ride them and I have regretted it each time. You get jerked around, anxiety maxes out as you are climbing higher and higher knowing you will eventually reach the peak .... only to drop quickly to get jerked around a sharp corner and continue to climb another peak and do it again and again not knowing when exactly it will come to an end! I find no enjoyment in any part of the agonizing ride. Being strapped in does not give me enough assurance that I am safe during the terrible experience.

Life can be like that ride at times.

However, you usually do not buy an expensive ticket and stand in line to purposely put your life on the edge of danger. Sometimes, you just wake up and you realize that you are on the roller coaster whether we have chosen to be or not. Difficult trials, challenges, and sometimes temptations can force us to sit tight, buckle up, and hang on to the security bar in front of us. We can try our best to prepare for the upcoming adrenaline rush, but at some point during the ride we have to have faith, sit still, and trust during the ups and downs.

Epinephrine is a stress hormone that is made by glands by our kidneys. It plays a crucial part when we are faced with threatening situations or environments in our lives. We produce this hormone as a fight or flight reaction when we feel threatened as humans. God gave us this when He designed and created us.

So how do we have faith during these times of fight or flight when we are getting painfully jerked around and it appears certain that we will crash around the next corner and our stress levels are up way too high? The Apostle Paul answered this for us in 2 Corinthians 10:13. He knew the ups and downs of life more than anyone during his time as a witness for Christ. Read about his adventures and missionary works some day and it will astonish you! He assures us that God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear. God will always make a way of escape so that we are able to stand up under the trials and temptations of

life. God does not send temptations to us~ our enemy does that. But God does make a way of escape for those who put their trust in Him. Even if we have made bad choices of sin or made poor decisions by buckling ourselves in a not so wise situation, there is still hope. There may still be negative consequences, but we can unbuckle, step back and admit we were wrong, and deal with the after effects by taking responsibility and embrace the fact with humility that we can move forward with integrity.

Whether we have personally chosen the ride or we were forced on in one way or another, either way we must realize that the same God who created us offers and provides amazing strength, Grace and forgiveness to all who come to Him in faith. There is great hope in our eternal future. We may not physically see the end of our ups and downs in this life, but we can know with certainty as a child of our Good Father that His promises and His Word is True.

There will be a day when those who have trusted in Jesus as their security will fully experience the peace that passes all understanding. All that is in us will be exposed and laid bare before the Lord when this roller coaster comes to a final stop.

Do you have your life Assurance covered when that day comes? Take anxiety medication if you must, but make sure that your seat belt of Faith is buckled up first. Faith does its work a little like the stress hormone- it is unseen by the physical eye, but it helps us fight our fears during the ride!

Two hundred volunteers across the state turned out on Saturday, August 5 to participate in Starry Trek, a statewide search for starry stonewort that was organized by the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center (MAISRC) and University of Minnesota Extension. Here in Todd, eight volunteers participated. After being trained to identify starry stonewort, volunteers fanned out and checked four lakes across the county including Osakis, Maple, Little Birch and Big Birch.

After volunteers searched a total 211 public accesses on 178 lakes statewide, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed the invasive algae starry stonewort in Grand Lake in Stearns County. This is the first new confirmation of starry stonewort in a Minnesota lake in 2017. No infestations were found in Todd County.

The lakes that were searched had been prioritized as potentially high-risk for a starry stonewort infestation based on a model created by MAISRC researchers along with local use information from Starry Trek local coordinators.

The model took into account several factors such as temperature, precipitation, and pH. “With over 13 million acres of surface water in Minnesota, it’s incredibly difficult for state and local officials to examine every lake and river reach for invasive species,” said Megan Weber, MAISRC Extension Educator. “We need as many eyes on the water as possible, and that’s where citizen scientists come in.”

Starry stonewort is an invasive algae that was first found in Lake Koronis in 2015 and has since been found in ten Minnesota lakes, including Grand Lake.

Research into control options is ongoing at the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center.

“Although we were hoping to find no new populations, we are glad this one was discovered early, thanks to the people who participated in Starry Trek,” said Heidi Wolf, DNR invasive species unit supervisor. “We’re also encouraged that there hasn’t been a greater number of lakes found to have starry stonewort during this major search.”

Starry stonewort can grow tall and dense, forming mats on the surface that interfere with recreation and potentially displacing native plant species.

“This huge statewide search effort would not be possible without the help of the local coordinators from each participating county and the many volunteers who participated in the event,” added Weber. “They are truly making a difference in the health of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers.”

In Psalm 85:11 we read, “Faithfulness (to God’s Word) will spring forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven.” If we believe the Word of God, we are to live the Word of God and that means we are to do whatever is within our power to establish His Kingdom on earth.

Whenever people’s hearts are right with God, we see God-things happen.

The abolition of slavery and the end of child labor followed a resurgence of faith in God. The Salvation Army came to life when General Booth was convicted that God called him to bring God’s love to the needy. Seeing children, who were neglected, ignorant and hungry burdened Robert Raikes to start “Sunday” school. Many educational and charitable institutions came into existence because God’s people saw God’s children in need and were convicted by His Spirit to do something about it. Evidence that righteousness on earth comes from Heaven!

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Interesting tours of hemp, Hmong farms

The House Ag finance and policy committees went on a joint tour last week to an industrial hemp farm south of the metro area, and we also visited a 150-acre vegetable farm run by Hmong farmers.

Both were interesting and showed potential for further growth.

The re-establishment of hemp as a commercial crop was made possible by the 2013 federal farm bill, which allowed for limited cultivation under the supervision of land grant universities.

Hemp is related to marijuana, but contains only trace amounts of the drug THC. Despite those low levels, it is still classified as a controlled narcotic under federal law.

Here in Minnesota, the number of acres devoted to the crop has grown from 37 acres last year to 2,100 this year.

The University of Minnesota has been studying hemp for many years, but it was only after the farm bill allowed for its cultivation again that the crop began making a comeback. It was widely grown during WWII and used mainly for its fiber in the making of rope.

When we arrived at the field near Hastings, the first thing I noticed was the number of weeds mixed in with the hemp. We were told that there are no herbicides currently labeled for use in hemp fields, so weed control can be an issue. The owner of the field told us that planting of the crop is not done until early June, the main reason being they make several tillage passes to take out the first couple of weed flushes before the crop is planted. There are male and female plants interspersed in the field, with the male plants drying up after pollination has occurred. Harvest is done with a combine and soybean header, with the plants being cut fairly high off the ground so only the portion containing seeds goes through the combine. It is possible to go back into the field again

with another cutter if the stems are to be harvested for fiber.

The field we visited was only being grown for its seeds, which will be processed following harvest to yield hemp oil and a high protein meal product. The oil is high in omega fats and can also be used in cosmetic products such as lip balm. The hemp meal is fairly high in protein and could be used as a livestock feed, but current federal law doesn’t allow that on a commercial basis.

Strangely, it is permissible to be used as a protein source for human consumption, such as in high protein milk shakes.

There seems to be a solid future for this crop. The trick will be in developing the processing and marketing networks to make these products widely available.

We were given a sample of one such product called Hemp Hearts, which can be added to yogurt, salads, and smoothies.

The roll out of a new software program for the processing of car titles and license tabs in Minnesota has not been a smooth one. The system, called MNLARS, has been in the development stage for several years and was introduced statewide several weeks ago. It has been frustrating for vehicle owners trying to obtain new plates and for dealers needing to register vehicles to new owners. It’s also been very frustrating for those who work in deputy registrar’s offices around the state, as they at times have simply closed their doors because the new system was not working properly. I have been in contact with the Department of Public Safety and have relayed concerns and problems from those trying to work with the new system. Things have improved, but they need to get a whole lot better.

-Kevin Dear Kevin, I know you guys are scared right now, but from what you’ve told me this could be the kind of thing that turns into a blessing. First, she should already be looking for another job to start right after her current employment ends. That way, any severance pay will turn into a signing bonus of sorts.

I know there are always question marks and uncertainties when you’re job hunting, but this lady is a software project manager in Seattle, Washington. You’re not in the middle of a cornfield, dude. If she can’t find something in the next fourto-five months, there’s some other issue you’re not telling me about.

Now, in the very unlikely event she doesn’t land another gig, you guys are going to have to put Baby Step 2 on hold for a while, and cut your spending down to the bare necessities until something does come along. But your lady has a superemployable skill set. If she gets out there and really busts it looking for another job, I think you two are going to land on your

feet and in even better shape than before!

-Dave Dear Dave, My brother-in-law moved in with us several months ago. He’s 32, and he doesn’t have a job or contribute anything in terms of helping around the house or with bills. I think he needs to move out, but my wife is hesitant to say anything.

She complains about the situation to me, but she knows her family will be upset if we do anything. How can we handle this?

-Chuck Dear Chuck, Responsible adults don’t behave like bums, and I don’t care what the rest of the family thinks. This issue is between you and your wife. You two are the only ones dealing with this, so it’s easy for others to chime in about what should happen.

You shouldn’t just kick the guy out, but you do need to get busy formulating a plan that will allow him to get back on his feet. Have a gentle talk with him about the situation and his future, and tell him things aren’t going to continue on the same path. Let him know he must have a job within 30 days, and 30 days after that he has to move into his own place. Write it down on the calendar, if it will help, but make sure he understands why you’re doing this and the date he must move out.

I know these things can be difficult, but sometimes you’ve got to take the bull by the horns and make something happen.

It’s what’s best for him – and both of you – in the long run.

MnDOT accepting applications for Local Road Improvement Program funding Minnesota cities, counties and townships can apply for funding support for transportation infrastructure projects on local roads as part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Local Road Improvement Program.

Approximately $25.3 million in bond funds is available for constructing or reconstructing local roads in 2018, 2019 or 2020. Funding may be requested for projects that will reduce traffic crashes on rural County State Aid Highways, for projects on local roads that have regional significance or for the local share of a trunk highway project.

Types of projects previously funded include roundabouts, pavement reconstruction, curve and roadway alignment, pavement resurfacing and reconditioning, and safety improvements such as turn lanes, traffic signals and rural intersection warning systems.

“This funding assists cities, counties and townships in paying costs associated with eliminating a transportation system deficiency. In turn, this program pro-

motes local, regional or state economic development efforts and improves safety,” said Mitch Rasmussen, State Aid Division assistant commissioner.

Deadline for counties and state aid cities (population greater than 5,000) is Nov. 3, 2017.

Burtrum City August 7, 2017 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:02 pm on Monday, August 7, 2017 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

Those in attendance included; Ron Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Kevin Rohde, Beau Krueger, Deb VanHavermaet, and Mitchell Bruggenthies.

The meeting minutes from July 3rd, 2017 were read and approved by a motion made by Beau Krueger seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted. Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb Van Havermaet and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies. The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Beau Krueger, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, still working on getting more estimates for fencing at the Burtrum Lions Park. The mayor is awaiting a call back and also getting a hold of someone of another person regarding bushes in town that still need to be trimmed. A call was placed to the state regarding putting in culverts from Ed Walkers to Mitchell Bruggenthies, and through the road, but are still waiting to hear back as well.

Next, in new business, Joe Kemper was present at the meeting in requesting of the City Beer Permit for August 26th-27th for Heritage Days. This was approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Deb Van Havermaet.

Attending the meeting was also Virginia Axel, owner of Burtrum Liquor, who was requesting intention for Sunday Off sales with appropriated time allotted for sale. This was approved by a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Beau Krueger.

Water Inspections were recently done at the Community Center and Burtrum Lions Park and was noted that the wells will need to be modified for proper ventilation.

Also, one shed is too close to the road and may cause an issue with the snow plow. Overall the board said the road looked good and the residents said they would go ahead with the next steps of paying the contractor and getting the road petition signed.

A resident of 184th St. by Moose Lake contacted a supervisor to ask for that road to be bladed. That road is not a township maintained road and landowners are responsible for maintenance.

Supervisors are working on weed inspections. Thistles are very bad by Flicker Road and Essex Drive. Poison ivy and thistles are very bad also in ditches by Ermine Drive and Dunlin Road. Supervisor will go out with sprayer to control weeds in these areas.

In the road report the fence on 331st Ave still too close to the road.

Maintenance personnel will not be liable for damage to fence during road and road right of way maintenance. Supervisors discussed plans to improve 210th St. Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept estimate of $15,000-20,000 from Herdering, Inc. to remove stumps and shape road ditch. Motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Supervisor will talk to other landowners about taking the stumps. Also, Buck Lake access needs gravel.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $125,933.03. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:36 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Check That, You Really Should - By John Young The internet is a great thing! You can find all sorts of information on almost any topic or thought you might have that is consuming your life at that exact moment! You can find sites dedicated to almost anything. Want to find photos and videos of kittens playing in bath water? They are there! If you want to find information on how to cook with a pressure cooker while wearing a lederhosen, it’s there also! (ok maybe it isn’t there, but that should be there.)

The internet and specifically social media have brought a new component of what would be termed as ‘fake news’ that many feel is ‘real because I saw it on the internet!’ Every day in your news feed on Facebook you will see stories shared by friends of things that just seem too out there to be true. Many of these stories are a hoax or fake stories found on websites that are designed to attract a certain type of person who is looking to reinforce a bias or stereotype and help them make their point on how right they are and how evil the other side is.

These fake stories might be based on a photo of a famous person that has been Photoshopped (edited to make something look real that isn’t) or on a quote that is taken out of context. The question is how can one tell if a story or image is real, or if it is fake or a hoax meant to bend opinions with their deceptive work.

The best way is to start with our good friend Google. Go to the Google website (or type in the search bar at the top of your browser) and pick out some key words from the article or title. Be sure to put a few of those words in, and include the word ‘hoax’ along with the words. As an example, if you saw a shared story that was titled, “President Obama Will Be Starting In Center Field For The New York Yankees.” We can take the words “Obama starting center field hoax” and search for anything that pops up.

which feature fake stories, some of the common hoax buster websites like Snopes (http://www.snopes.com) might not show up as a top result. The hoax sharing websites tend to share these fake stories back and forth and are Google friendly so that they will rank high in those types of searches that don’t include the word hoax. Keep scrolling down a bit and you might find an entry from Snopes regarding that story. There are stories out there that seem fake, but Snopes has done the research to show how much of the story is accurate (from none to part to all accurate) and gives you a bit of the back story.

Taking a bit of time to research the items you find online that you feel the urge to share is something everyone should do especially when the story or article is coming from a website that seems to have an agenda. Researching before you share items keeps you from looking foolish and helps not promote these unscrupulous websites that are only out there to mislead people and promote their twisted agenda.

House launches web form for Minnesotans experiencing hassles with MN licensing and registration system In response to a significant number of constituent complaints about ongoing issues with the newly-launched Minnesota Licensing and Registration System (MNLARS), the House Select Committee on Technology and Responsive Government is launching a web form to collect information from constituents that can be forwarded to Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) as they work to address and resolve problems with the MNLARS system. Rep. Dave Baker, R-Willmar, chairs the committee, and has been contacted by numerous constituents and registrars across the state about issues related to the MNLARS launch.

“We know it’s frustrating going to the DMV to begin with, and it’s disappointing to hear about the ongoing problems Minnesotans are having. We’re encouraging folks to use this web form to tell us what they’re experiencing so we can assist DVS is fixing this problem,” Baker said. “We are monitoring this closely and hope that we can help by collecting and forwarding information so DVS can put an end to these headaches.”

Paul Torkelson, R-Hanska, Chair of the House Transportation Finance Committee, sent a letter to Governor Dayton urging him to shift any resources necessary from MN.IT and other relevant agencies to assist DVS with resolving the ongoing MNLARS issues. In addition, he requested regular updates be sent to himself and DFL Rep. Frank Hornstein, DFL-Minneapolis, so legislators can continue to communicate with constituents and registrars.

Baker urged those submitting comments to be as specific and detailed as possible to better assist DVS as they work to improve user and registrar experience with the new system.

“It’s clear this system was not ready when it launched—we share everyone’s frustration and want people know that registrars are doing everything they can to provide the best customer service possible despite the challenging circumstances. We’ve got folks at DVS working to improve the system, and I’m confident they can get it back on track soon,” Baker concluded.

August 10, 2017: At 20:41 TCSO received information that there was a burglary that occurred at the Happy Hoarders Storage sheds at 402 Maple St. South in the city of Grey Eagle. Between July 26th, 2017 and the time of the report, six units at the storage sheds were broken into. Multiple items were taken during the burglaries. August 11, 2017: At 10:31 Todd County Sheriffs Office received a report of a car deer crash on County 13 near County 102.Jim Hobbs age 70 of Burtrum was traveling southbound on County 13 near County 102 in his 2012 Chrysler Town and Country when he struck a deer causing damage.
