Work requires fair play too -By Harvey Mackay One day many years ago, two young fellows were in a quarrel, and it had signs of becoming serious. One of the combatants, who had been defeated in the decision, and above whom the towering Lincoln stood head and shoulders over, boastfully threatened Lincoln.

So you make a chalk mark on me that will show just your size. When we fight, you must be sure to hit me inside this mark or it won’t be fair.”

The idea was so ridiculous, the little bully began to laugh, and the quarrel ended as a joke.

Everyone seeks to be treated fairly.

Remember when you were growing up and you had a teacher or coach or parent who played favorites? I bet that didn’t make you feel very good.

Fairness is important to employees, but that doesn’t mean that you have to treat everyone equally. Not everyone is the same. You have high level producers and others who are content in just doing their jobs. If you treat these people equally and pay them equally, you’re also not going to be seen as fair.

The truth of the matter is that life isn’t always fair. But that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try to be as fair as possible. How do you think companies make the various lists of the top 100 companies to work for? They have perks, of course, but they are fair.

According to RISMedia, fairness means treating each employee appropriately and individually, based on their circumstances and contributions.

Fair companies “treat like cases alike and unalike cases unalike,” says ethics expert Bruce Weinstein.

Bottom line, you can’t play favorites.

You hold everyone to the same standards.

If employees think they’re not getting a fair deal from your company, they won’t perform as well as you need them to. In fact, morale can be destroyed. The best advice is to follow the golden rule: Treat everyone you encounter as you would like to be treated.

Equally important is to lead by example. Be a role model for your employees. If you want them to be at work by 8 a.m., you should be at work before 8 a.m. If you tell an employee they are spending too much time on personal items, you must use your time appropriately. Do as I do, not as I say.

It’s so much easier when you establish crystal-clear rules. Let employees know what is expected of them in terms of criteria for performance reviews, promotions, raises/bonuses, qualifications for benefits and disciplinary actions. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dynamite In previous years, dynamite was easily available at the local hardware store.

You could buy it without proving that you were not mentally d i s t u rb ed or trying to overthrow the government.

There were many really large stumps to be removed so that fields could be created. There were very few large machines which were available to move enough dirt for the stump removal and if they were hired, it would cost “too much money.” The solution was to use dynamite to break up the stumps and large rocks. If successful, the stumps and rocks would be reduced in size so that horses or the farm tractors could move them off the field.

Dynamite was a very effective and cheep way to eliminate a large problem.

Those individuals who used the dynamite were usually not high explosive experts.

The combination of inexperience and volatility of the dynamite created memorable experiences.

My grandfather was usually the person in control of the situation when dynamite was used. I remember two times when things didn’t work out exactly as planned. In one case there was a rock in the field which was about 6 feet across. As with all rocks, it seemed to grow and get higher each year due to frost and erosion. It was decided that we should put holes under the rock with the crow bar, put dynamite under the rock and break it apart. When the fuses were lit and we got out of the way, there was a really big bang due to the really large amount of dynamite needed to effect that really large rock. The rock lifted out of the ground about 8 feet and landed back in the hole, all in one piece. We still had the rock in one piece, but it was now deeper in the ground and easier to move the farm equipment across. Sometimes the desired solution isn’t the result, but the result solves the problem.

There was a white oak stump behind the barn which was always creating problems. When we unloaded hay behind the barn, we needed to pull

the wagon out and make a corner to get out of the cow-yard. Every time we turned the corner, the right rear wheel of the wagon ran over the stump, bouncing the rack on the wagon. Pa had enough rack slamming one afternoon and got some dynamite and placed it under the stump. The explosion blew the stump straight up about as high as the barn.

Stump’s gone, but now there were some windows in the barn that needed to be replaced. Problem solved.

We knew an individual who was blowing some stumps. One day while he and his son were blowing stumps, they had one charge that didn’t go off when it was suppose to. After waiting for a period of time that was more than adequate, he walked up to the stump to see what was wrong. When he got over the stump, it blew, causing a lot of damage to his upper body and making him blind for the rest of his life. It can be dangerous.

be honest and up front so employees understand what is happening. Rules always go over better when you have buy-in from employees.

Maintain an open line of communication. I tell my employees that my door is always open for any of our employees. You have to give employees a voice and listen to their feedback. And then act on their concerns promptly.

Finally, don’t be afraid to apologize if you make a mistake. No one is perfect.

It’s best to admit your mistake and move on. If you fail to acknowledge your own mistakes, your employees won’t think you are fair. Be honest with your employees.

If you truly want to know how employees feel about conditions at your company, here are some questions to ask and then give fair hearing to the answers: • Is management’s treatment of all employees respectful and evenhanded?

Obituaries Victor S. Detloff

Victor S. Detloff, 98, passed away at The Waterford Manor in Brooklyn Park on Saturday, August 11, 2018.

A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Victor, will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, August 16 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Family and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Meire Grove.

Victor Sylvester Detloff was born September 4, 1919, on a farm in Gilmanton Township, Benton County, Minnesota to Bernard and Constance (Rymer) Detloff.

He attended country school through eighth grade. Victor was a farmer at heart but had many occupations during his lifetime. He was a roofer and factory worker in Chicago, laid hardwood floors in Minneapolis, did machinery repair at Modern Farm Equipment in Sauk Centre, and custom combined crops from Oklahoma to the Dakotas and into Minnesota. Even in retirement he continued to help his sons with roofing and farming. Victor continued to offer to help drive tractor if he was needed throughout the summer of 2018.

He was united in marriage to Florence Czech on June 19, 1945, at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford, MN. The couple farmed near Burtrum in Todd County.

In 1978, Victor and Florence sold their farm and purchased a lake lot on the eastern part of Big Swan Lake. After spending 17 years at the lake home, in 1995 Florence and Victor moved to Melrose. His last years were spent in assisted livings at Park View in Melrose, Sunrise in Minnetonka, and Waterford Manor in Brooklyn Park.

Victor was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Men’s Club in Swanville, and Knights of Columbus Council #1633. He also supported Crosier Seminary in Onamia.

Victor was dedicated to his family, loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family and always loved reunions at weddings, graduations, or just any excuse for a party. He was a hard worker all is life. He took his marriage vows very seriously and his final job was caring faithfully for his wife Florence as she battled Alzheimer’s. At the assisted living facilities, he was known for his sweet temperament and teasing. He was beloved by many of those who helped care for him in his last years.

Charlene E. “Char” Petermeier, age 88 of Albany, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Serenity Village in Avon, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m.

Friday, August 17 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckerman officiating.

Entombment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Albany. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Charlene Elizabeth Hoeschen was born August 12, 1930 in Freeport, Minnesota to Conrad and Elizabeth (Kleve) Hoeschen.

She married John “Jack” Petermeier on October 27, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Charlene was an Aide at Albany Public School. She did alterations, made doll blankets, quilts, curtains, and Christmas stockings. She is known for her

homemade caramel rolls and bread and for making delicious roast beef. Charlene has touched many lives in the Albany community.

She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and spent a lot of time volunteering for the church. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers and St. Ann’s Society.

Survivors include her husband, John “Jack” Petermeier of Albany; children, Lisa Petermeier of Albany and Andrew Petermeier of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, Nicole Popplewell, Jamie Feldhege, Philip Lundeen, Cori Lundeen, and Jenna Petermeier; six greatgrandchildren, Brandon, Olivia, Colton, Hannah, Carter, Charlie, and baby Elliot John on the way; and sisters, Shirley Uphoff of Melrose and Judy (Ray “Skip”) Kmitch of St. Cloud.

Charlene was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Roger and LeRoy Hoeschen; and sisters, Donna Kerfeld and Lorene Pfau.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nicole Popplewell, Jamie Fedhege, Lynsey Feldhege, Philip Lundeen, and Cori Lynn Lundeen. Cross bearer will be Brandon Lundeen and scripture bearer will be Olivia Feldhege.

Roger S. Blenker

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Roger S. Blenker, age 69 of Avon, will be at 10:30 AM Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Anna.

Father Gregory Mastey will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

Roger passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home on Saturday. There will be a visitation after 9:30 AM Thursday at Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany.

Roger was born on September 10, 1948 to Leo and Theresia (Meier) Blenker in Albany. He graduated from Albany High School Class of 1967. Roger served in the United States Air Force from 1967-1971. He was married to Janet Vos in St. Anthony on June 9, 1973. Roger worked for the Postal Service and Fingerhut before working at Polar Tank & Trailer in Opole for 40 years and retiring in 2014. He belonged to the Immaculate Conception Church and Albany American Legion. Roger was a family man and enjoyed spending most of his time with his loved ones and good friends. Sharing his love of the outdoors with his friends and family was one of his favorite things. Over the years Roger loved hunting, particularly deer hunting near Pine River and fishing on his “Secret Lake” where the fish were

always biting. Roger also had many canine companions that he enjoyed taking on long walks in the woods. His furry friend Brody kept him good company in recent years.

Roger is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet Blenker of Avon; his children, Tracy Blenker of Avon and Eric Blenker of Andover; his sister, Mary Grund of St. Cloud; sister-in-law Mary Blenker of Albany, his grandchildren, James and Jaxson, as well as many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Leo (1964) and Theresia (2004), his brother LeRoy (2016) and his brother-in-law Jim Grund (2000).

Evelyn Chapin

E v e l y n Chapin, age 80 of Long Prairie passed away Thursday, Aug. 9 at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie. Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 11 at the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie.

Inurnment was at the Evergreeen

Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Evelyn “Evie” Chapin, age 80 of Long Prairie, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 9, 2018, at the CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie, MN. Evelyn Maxine Platt was born on May 14, 1938 to Everett and Grace (Tanberg) at home on the family farm. She attended country school and finished her education at

the Osakis High School. She married LeRoy Chapin on September 17, 1955 and together they went on to raise four children. Evie worked for various employers including Title Atlas, Minnesota Distillers (until its closing), and finally at the Long Prairie High School. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, crocheting, playing with her schnauzer, Libby, watching the Timberwolves (she never missed a game), and most of all spending time with her friends and family.

She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be dearly remembered and greatly missed by her family.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, LeRoy Chapin of Long Prairie; her children, Bob (Tammie) Chapin of Osakis, Ron (Lisa) Chapin, of Long Prairie, and Patty (Trevor) Zastrow of Long Prairie; 8 grandchildren, Jesse, Jack, Stacey, Aaron, Kelly, Samantha, Christian, and Maggie; 10 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jack; and a sister, Betty.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Farmfest notes, including a discussion on biodiesel changes in Minn.

Minnesota’s annual farm extravaganza, known as Farmfest, was held last week on the plains of southern Minnesota about ten miles south of Morton. Always held at this time of year, it usually gets hot during the show’s three-day run, especially in the afternoons. I’ve always marveled at salesmen who could sell winter items such as corn stoves while standing in the hot sun on a sweltering August day.

In addition to the acres and acres of equipment set up for farmers to check out, there is a steady stream of forums and panel discussions held during the event to keep us farm folks up to date.

Especially in an election year such as this, those politicians running for statewide office always seem to head for Farmfest to shore up their chances with folks in the ag community. There were debates among U.S. Senate and House candidates, with the highlight being a debate among the major candidates with an eye on Minnesota’s governorship.

The five running in the primary from the two major parties held their debate on Wednesday morning last week, and it drew a tent full of interested listeners.

As many farmers probably already know, our state moved to a 20-percent blend of biodiesel this year. After an early hiccup because of issues with the

availability of bio, any bulk fuel sold to farmers in Minnesota after June contains this 20-percent blend. I was part of a panel discussion at Farmfest that dealt with the history of biodiesel in Minnesota and what farmers should know about using the product going forward.

I discussed how Minnesota first passed legislation in 2002 and moved to its first mandated blend of two percent biodiesel in 2005. Over the years that blend has been increased, first to 5 percent and then 10 percent. This past May, the final ramp-up to 20 percent took place.

The use of this higher blend of diesel fuel is for half the year, during our warmer months of April through September. During the rest of the year, the blend requirement drops back to 5 percent. I authored a bill this past session that dealt with two aspects of our biodiesel statute here in Minnesota.

Because it tends to get cold here in the winter time, there is an exception to the blending requirement for number one diesel, which is used by many truckers and farmers in the winter to prevent jelling issues with regular diesel fuel. That exemption was set to expire next year, and this legislation made that exemption permanent.

The other part of the bill had to do with the actual blending of fuel. With a 5-percent blend from October through March, the folks who run the pipeline terminals told us that it would be difficult to make the switch back to 20 percent in a short time frame. Anderson continued from pg 5 all at the higher blend on April 1, they would need to start ramping up their blend rate earlier. This legislation allowed for a two-week period when the blending could be ramped up to be at the full 20-percent rate by April 15. It was a good compromise on the part of all involved, and the bill passed both chambers and was signed into law by Gov. Dayton.

I was a bit surprised by one of the other panel members who commented that many farmers were not even aware of the move to B-20 in Minnesota. As mentioned earlier, any tanks filled since planting season this spring, and especially those filled after June, will have the higher blend in them. Psalm 99:1 describes what would happen if we did regain a new sense of the holiness of God. Because “the Lord reigns, let the nations tremble, He sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth tremble.”

This awesome picture of God that the Psalmist presents to us describes His holiness, power, might and majesty. This description of God is not one that we are familiar with since our minds have become so “clouded” with the things of this world. Certainly we can blame the producers for the programs we watch, but they would not produce what they do without us watching and enjoying it.

Dear Motor Medics, I’m having trouble with my turn signals on my 2001 GMC Yukon. They will randomly work on the passenger side and they never shut off after making a left turn. My local shop thinks it’s the turn signal switch but at several hundred dollars to replace I’m a bit reluctant as this is just a truck I use to pull the boat a half dozen times a year and I don’t have the extra funds, they go into my boat. Is the turn signal switch something that can be done at home by me?

-Brad in Davis Oklahoma Dear Brad, If you have a turn signal switch that has failed it can be replaced at home by most average skilled home repair folks.

They are available at most auto parts stores and are usually less than two hundred bucks. The switch controls the wipers, the turn signals and the cruise making it a multi-function switch so it has quite a harness of wires running down the column. If you want to tackle this item for the first time we suggest watching a you tube video about it first and then decide if you want to tackle it or spend the extra for a shop to install it.

Different vehicles are set up in different ways with some requiring the removal of more or less parts to do this job so before you tackle one it’s always good to know what you have.

rear failed first then the driver’s side followed by the passenger front and now my driver’s side is moving slow.

This wasn’t too bad until it got to the driver’s side front. It’s my drive thru window so it has to work guys. I also lost my A/C a few years ago so it would be nice to get some air flow. All of the windows made a grinding noise before they stopped and now they just grind when I try them. I can also push them up and down by hand.

-Tony in Mason City Iowa Dear Tony, Windows are usually a fairly easy fix. The symptom you are describing sounds like a window regulator but you will need to have that verified before you throw parts at it. We wouldn’t want you to spend unneeded money. If it is a regulator that’s a fairly easy fix requiring about an hour of time or so per window to repair. The regulator and motor are an assembly that can be purchased aftermarket or even picked up used for a reasonable price. Some folks choose to do them at home as well. Depending on where you purchase the parts they may even come with instructions if new but watching an online video first is always important. Make sure the tracks are free from dirt too.

Grey Eagle City June 12, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 12th day of June 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent.

Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Patty Seifert, Bob Lefavor, Kristie Kuhlmann, Joe Krueger, Steven Ahrens and Iris Wolbeck.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made

by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the May 8, 2018 meeting with the following change: page 1670, paragraph 2, first sentence add Hwy 287 after west lift station. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve a building permit for Patty Seifert to install a handicap ramp to the front of the house. This ramp would not affect any setback requirements. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Kristie Kuhlmann was in attendance to discuss property clean up at 304 State Street East. Kristie stated that the materials for installing a fence on the property have been paid for but that they are waiting for the contractor before installation can take place. Kristie stated that a fence is needed for the property as there is constant trespassing and that for safety and liability reasons their insurance company would require it. They would like to address the easement that the city holds on the north side of the property at the July meeting so they could have time to clearly mark lot lines.

Kristie questioned the council on what they can do on this property as it was sold as a commercial property and would like to continue its use in that capacity. They would like to keep the integrity of the building and clean up as much as possible.

They currently have two sump pumps and dehumidifiers running to help dry out the building on the inside. They clean branches that have fallen on a daily basis and they currently have no water to the building until the broken pipes can be fixed. Property taxes have been paid up and Highway 27 salvage will be coming in to remove vehicles.

Kristie requested a 30 day extension for the installation of the fence and property clean up.

City Attorney Joe Krueger stated that the council had four options regarding the property clean up as follows: 1. Do nothing.

2. Table to see what progress has been made by the July meeting.

3. Issue an abatement order.

4. Issue an abatement order but stay it for a period of time. If not cleaned up by the stipulated stay date, then the council can

move forward without having to start the process all over.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to move to a closed session to discuss pending litigation with City Attorney Joe Krueger. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Steven Ahrens and Iris Wolbeck were in attendance seeking approval partial blocking of streets as follows: Ward Street East from Woodman Street South to Cedar Street South and Woodman Street South from Ward Street East to Pearl Street and Cedar Street South from Ward Street East to Pearl Street East.

They are also requesting permission to allow a DJ to play until midnight for their wedding reception to be held under a tent in their backyard. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to allow the partial closing of the stated streets but allowing for traffic to as needed for the property owners who would be impacted by the partial closings and to allow for emergency vehicles access to any property within the partial closure. They would also be required to make sure all property owners would be aware of the party taking place. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bob Lefavor was in attendance to inform the council that he is finishing getting the remainder of his items off the property at 304 State Street East. He is asking for a letter of acknowledgement of progress that he has made and that he is in the City’s good standing. Due to pending litigation the City will not be able to honor this request.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2018-07, A Resolution Accepting $50 Donation from Juel Meyer for Fire Department Equipment. A second was made

by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution may be read in its entirety at the Clerk’s office.

Council pay was discussed.

The Clerk stated that the council has not received any increases in pay and that an increase should be considered. The Clerk was instructed to see what other cities councils receive and present at the July meeting.

The tar repair at the fire hall is tabled to the July meeting.

roof of the fire hall isn’t damaged. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to hire Undercut Tree Care & Removal to trim the trees. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk spoke with Janet Schinske regarding placing the community sign on property they own next to the post office.

The sign will be measured to determine how much room will be needed and work with the city attorney to draw up an agreement with the Schinske’s regarding the use of the property.

Council member Bill Pohlmann left the meeting at 8:35 p.m.

The council discussed a building permit for Dale Haffner to install a handicap ramp on the west side of the house. The ramp would be 4 feet wide and would need to be 37 feet long due to the height of the door. This would require a variance to the setback requirement of 25 feet from the edge of the road into the property as there would only be 23 feet 3 inches from the edge of the road to the end of the handicap ramp.

Haffner’s would also be replacing the 32 inch door with a 36 inch door. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to hire Water Tower Clean & Coat to clean the bottom bowl of the water tower and service and check the interior of the water tower for $3,000. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A resident who needs to do community service hours will be utilized to paint curbs and fire hydrants on Main Street.

The Mayor reminded the council that the property at 218 Woodman Street North needs to finish up the items that were approved with building permits.

The council will discuss the matter at the July meeting.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utilities as allowed by ordinance. The council will consider reinstating disconnect/reconnect fees at the July meeting.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $750.67 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $116.12 from the General Fund of which $41.12 goes to the Water Fund and $75 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of the regular bills and to include payment of the following additional items: $60 to Dollar General, $134 to Melrose Bakery, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union, $1,983.60 to Minnesota Power and $250 to Slew Foot.

Susie Johnson from Community Covenant Church representing the Upsala Ministerium invited the City Council to the Heritage Days Community Service on Sunday, August 12 at 10am at the Upsala High School to be recognized at the service.

Tom Grund explained to the Council his desire to build a storage unit at corner of Basswood and Highway 238 and requested to re-zone the property from Residential to Commercial. Currently this property is owned by Marlene Soltis. The Council directed Grund to first purchase the property; once the land is his, he can request a re-zone.

Lisa George & Don Trettel presented a petition requesting to lower the water rates and the City’s levy.

Economic Development Specialist Reva Mische is on maternity leave and will be back in October.

Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

The Fire Department presented their June minutes.

Lange stated that the Fire Department is ready for Heritage Days; they will be doing a car extrication on Saturday during the town celebration.

The Fire Department is also planning a Farm extrication for Oct. Sun, Oct 7, 2018 is the first day of Fire Prevention week. The Firefighters will be hosting an open house 11am – 3 pm with a free will donation meal.

mitted their monthly report and request a gambling permit.

Lange moved to approve Upsala Firemen’s Relief Association Gambling Permit on behalf of the Upsala First Response Team to hold a raffle drawing on Sunday, October 7, 2018 located at 110 West Elm at 2:30 pm with no waiting period, 2nd by Bartells.

Stevens reviewed the August Calendar.

Stevens also discussed the internships with the Council. Intern Kasey Stevens was married last Saturday; he has moved to Moorhead and will be working remotely from his new home. He will be in Upsala as needed.

Also approved a Building Permit for Roger Roerick.

Bartells updated the Council on Heritage Days which is coming up August 10-12. New things are on the lineup. New food venders are coming in for the event. Clue #1 for the Medallion Hunt was put out this morning.

There are approximately 16 craft vendors signed up. The Committee has planned to have something constantly going on all day Saturday and into the evening.

The Rec Board submitted their minutes from the July 24, 2018 meeting.

The maintenance building has been completed and the landscaping is almost finished.

The Planning and Zoning Commissioners will be drafting an ordinance ready for the next City Council Meeting reducing the speed limits on local city streets.

Stevens explained that the Morrison County Public Works Department installed one of the electronic speed signs on County Road 21 near the high school this month. The 2nd sign location was approved by Minnesota Department of Transportation on the south end of town on Highway 238. The goal is to have it installed in August before school starts.

The open house for the new Maintenance Building and City Hall will be August 16 from 4 to 7 pm; all are welcome.

The City Council set dates for the Auditing Firm Request For Proposals. Stevens will have the requests sent out this week.

to be on the interview committee.

Part 1 of the WHPP was sent to the Department of Health requesting approval and to move onto part 2.

The regular City Council Meeting date for September falls on Labor Day. Bartells moved to change the date for the regular Council Meeting to Tuesday, September 4, 2018, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to approve Resolution 8-6-18-1, a resolution to accept a donation of $2,000.00 from the Upsala Lions for fireworks during Heritage Days, 2nd

Intern Kasey Stevens reviewed the numbers on the water and sewer analysis sheets explaining that even though the 2017 Water Fund’s net Income balance was $44,161.00 (which some residents took as the cash fund balance), this did not include the bond payments. The total of both bond payments that come out of the Water Fund total $48,446.00. The actual Fund Cash Balance has a deficit of $-46,532.00. The Sewer Fund’s Cash Balance has a deficit of $-24,403.

Mayor Rollie Johnson tabled the contract with an independent auditor to clean up the Fund Accounting in the Banyon Data System software.

Bartells moved to set August 21, 2018 at 6:00 pm as the midyear review of the budget and to create the 2019 preliminary budget, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Andrea Douvier discussed the unnecessary need to sound the siren every day at noon.

Lange moved to turn off the siren that sounds daily at noon, 2nd Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Recognition to Lana Bartells and the UCDC Committee for all the work they are putting into Heritage Days. It takes a lot of logistical planning to make a three day City Event successful.

A Bakery Funny

After starting a new diet, I altered my drive to work to avoid passing my favorite bakery.

But, this morning, I accidentally drove by the bakery and as I approached, there in the window were a host of goodies.

I felt this was no accident, so I prayed, “Lord, it’s up to you, if you want me to have any of those delicious goodies, please create a parking place for me directly in front of the bakery.”

And sure enough, on the eighth time around the block, there it was!

God is good!

Dear Dave, My wife and I are not on the same page when it comes to money and our two teenage daughters.

I think they should be learning the value of work and money, but she doesn’t want them to work.

She regularly hands them spending money and buys them expensive gifts. I want our girls to have some nice things, but this is starting to cause problems in our relationship. Do you have any advice?

-Stan Dear Stan, Kids should learn to work and make money at an early age. We’ve given nice gifts to our kids, but the difference is they also worked and made money for themselves. The gifts we gave them were for special occasions. Showering our kids with money and expensive toys all the time was not our way of life.

In this situation, your wife is allowing them to be nothing but consumers. I know she loves them, but they’re not learning how to work, and they’re not learning how to save or give. This is setting them up for a lifetime of unrealistic expectations. If something doesn’t happen to change things, you’re going to end up with two spoiled little girls, who think they should be given everything their entire lives.

Still, I think the biggest problem is you and your wife are experiencing a communication and marital breakdown.

If the kids weren’t in the picture, I’ve got a feeling the same problems would exist. The difference is they would manifest themselves in other ways.

Obviously, your wife needs to stop being so impulsive where the kids are concerned. Try sitting down with her, and gently explaining your feelings.

Let your wife know you love her and how generous she is, but you’re worried this is having a negative impact on your children. Maybe you could try to establish some guidelines as to when really nice gifts are appropriate, too.

There’s a middle ground you can reach, but it’s going to take some time and effort. Most of all, it means the two of you are going to have to communicate and work together for the good of your kids.

-Daniel Dear Daniel, Absolutely not! The only sure-fire way to ensure you’ll miss out on a job is by not applying for the position.

Send a copy of your resumé to every job opportunity for which you have a reasonable chance of being hired. Then, when you get an interview, go in there with your head held high.

I’ve met lots of people who say they have 20 years of experience. But in a lot of cases it’s more like one year of experience 20 times. That kind of “experience” is useless. I’ve also met

many sharp, educated people without experience, but you can tell they’re the kind who will put their minds to work, think outside the box, and figure out a way to get the job done with excellence.

The Smartest Way to Pay for College

By Anthony ONeal I spend a lot of time talking with students about big life decisions they’ll face, and one of the most important is how to pay for college.

At a recent speaking event, I asked 100 students if they believed they could ever pay cash for college.

Eighty-seven of them said no.

Now, I know this isn’t a scientific research project. But when I asked those same students why they said no, they told me college costs too much. They figured there would be no way to pay for college without taking out student loans.

For those of you who think the same way, it’s time to think again. I want you to see there’s simply no reason for a teen you care about to go into debt for college.

How did it get that high? The majority of young people in America have accepted the popular myth that student loans are just part of life. And it’s not just the teens from my little survey who believe this. In 2017, Student Loan Hero reported that the average college student graduates with over $37,000 dollars in student loan debt.

As someone who once racked up $25,000 in student loan debt myself, I can relate to people who borrowed to go to school or who still believe it’s the only way.

Here’s some good news though.

There’s a much better way to pay for a college education.

A BETTER WAY As I said before, most of the students I talked to were doubtful about cash-flowing college. But 13 of them agreed that it is, in fact, possible to go to college debt-free. Let’s talk about how more students are getting it done every year.

There’s money available in many forms to help students go to college without loans. A 2015 study by NerdWallet revealed over $2 billion in grant and scholarship money goes unclaimed every year. All that cash could have put a big dent in the billions owed by so many students nationwide.

What’s stopping the teens in your life from claiming those dollars for themselves? There are literally thousands of college scholarships out there.

FINDING COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID The internet is an awesome resource for scholarship hunting. There are tons of great websites, like MyScholly.com, that help students find money for school. However, these resources are only helpful if they’re used.

Here’s my advice for students to get the most out of their search for college dollars.

In middle school, students should spend about 30 minutes a day searching for, and applying to get, scholarships.

By the time they reach high school, students should spend about an hour each day doing the same. During the summer, high school students should treat the search for scholarship dollars like a part-time job, and plan to put in four hours a day. I know students who did this, and they ended up with more than enough money to pay for school and graduate completely debt-free!

And here’s one more thing to keep in mind when it comes to paying for college — the FAFSA. I know, it sounds weird, but it stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students have to fill it out every year they go to college. It’s not just used to

It’s also used to determine eligibility for grants, scholarships, and workstudy programs. The earlier applicants complete the FAFSA, the better. Students can begin the process as early as October 1 (for the following school year), though they will need to come back after January to update their income tax information.

Remember, debt is not necessary to get a college degree. There are ways to pay for college without taking student loans, and being in debt for 10 years after graduation. Yes, it takes some research and hard work, but cash-flowing college is possible!
