If you can’t execute, you can’t succeed -By Harvey Mackay

When comedian Larry the Cable Guy says, “Git ‘er done,” he’s simply defining one of the buzzwords heard in boardrooms and offices everywhere: execution intelligence, also known as XQ. I personally prefer Larry’s term to the fancier jargon, but the end result is the same: have an end result!

Execution intelligence is the ability to convert smarts and plans into action. A true business expert knows that the idea is not king - the solution is. In a digital culture that can find almost any kind of idea or information on the Internet, the challenge is in converting this universal knowledge into a successful result.

Michael Dell, CEO and founder of Dell Inc., said, “Ideas are a commodity.

Execution of them is not.”

The business world recently lost one of the giants of execution intelligence, Dr. Stephen Covey. Stephen and I shared a podium a number of times, and I am proud to have called him my friend. His life work is an example of how to get things done, from his planning calendars that many of us use to his inspirational writing. In his blockbuster book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” the second habit is “Begin with the end in mind.”

Talking in a broader sense, Stephen said that “organizations that execute with excellence focus on very few clear objectives and align the focus of every worker

and work group to those few goals. Can an organization execute its goals when its people are unclear on the goals, uncommitted to them, unempowered to achieve them and unaccountable for them? Got smart people? Got a vision? Good for you.

Now, what about your XQ?” As a lifelong salesman, I know success comes when you are able to close the deal. In the sales field, all the flashy brochures and well-practiced presentations are just the beginning. No one works until a sale is made. If salespeople can’t execute sales, the business fails.

There’s a whole movement defining different kinds of intelligence. For example, emotional intelligence is centered on being smart about feelings. Interpersonal intelligence deals with being smart socially. IQ tests measure smarts as defined by words or math. So someone who is classified as very smart but lacking execution intelligence might not be able to succeed.

Developing your XQ involves several steps, according to teleseminar guru Alex Mandossian: • Don’t focus on complex solutions or even elegant ones. Sometimes we get too mired in details to see the logical end.

Complicating your progress is counterproductive.

• Execution intelligence forces you to zero in on answers that are pure action.

Don’t stall in the thinking stage. That’s when you get bogged down in meetings, memos, and reinventing the wheel but never reach a conclusion.

• Don’t spend all your time chasing the wrong rainbow. If you determine that a project will not work like you thought it would, let it go. Knowing when to throw in the towel is also a form of execution in-

telligence.

• Many brilliant ideas have been thought up already, but the real genius is being able to put them to work practically.

Many people know - or claim to know what to do. They just never get it done.

A doctor, a carpenter and an electrician were traveling in a foreign country when they unwittingly broke a law. They were all sentenced to die in the electric chair.

The doctor was placed in the chair first. The executioner asked if he had any last words. The doctor said, “I am so sorry.

If I am spared I will spend the rest of my life caring for the people of this country.”

The switch was flipped, but nothing happened. The doctor was spared.

Next came the carpenter. Again, he was asked for any last words. “I am so sorry. If I am also spared, I will spend the rest of my life building homes for the people of this country.” With that, the switch was Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

There will be an open house reception from 1:30-5 p.m. with a dinner following for all their neighbors, friends and relatives at the River Station in Richmond.

Jim and Liz were married on August 25, 1962 at St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring.

Bernice Raden

Obituaries Dorine M. “Sis” Von Wahlde Dorine M. “Sis” Von Wahlde, age 77 of New Munich, died after a two year battle with cancer on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, August 16 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Dorine Margaret Uphoff was born August 29, 1934 in New Munich, Minnesota to Bernard and Frieda (Klaphake) Uphoff.

On June 17, 1967 she married Clarence Von Wahlde at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Dorine worked for Dr. Kuhlman doing secretary work. She worked as a teacher’s aide for the New Munich and Melrose Schools and volunteered at Sacred Heart School in Freeport as a grandmother.

She was a member of Immaculate

Conception Catholic Church in New Munich where she was an Eucharistic Minister, a member of the St. Anne’s Christian Mothers, Immaculate Conception Catholic Aid Council, and the Good Shepherd Mission Group.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence Von Wahlde of New Munich; brother, Virgil “Vir” (Shirley) Uphoff of Melrose; sister, Regina “Regie” Sunderman of Sauk Centre; brother-inlaw, Jerome Lemm of New Munich; sisterin-law, Sally Uphoff of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorine was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Cel Uphoff and Ves Uphoff; sister, Bernie Lemm; sister-inlaw, Rose Uphoff; and brother-in-law, Jack Sunderman.

Serving as casket bearers will be Marty Sunderman, Steve Lemm, Tony Rueter, Craig Maus, Bill Nathe and Greg Uphoff.

Cross bearer will be Bryce Nathe and scripture bearer will be Joan Rademacher.

Lector will be Mary Krueger. Eucharistic Ministers will be Rosie Ostendorf and Georgine Nathe. Honorary bearers will be St. Anne’s Christian Mothers and Immaculate Conception Catholic Aid Council.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

James J. “Jim” Primus, age 84 of Melrose, formerly of Freeport, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Friday, August 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport. Military honors were provided by the Albany American Legion.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

James John Primus was born July 8, 1928, in Melrose, Minnesota to Anthony and Clotilda (Wander) Primus. He served in the Naval Air Force near the end of World War II. He was united in marriage to Florence “Flossie” Meier on May 10, 1948. Flossie died on November 30, 1992, after a battle with cancer. Jim was united to Bernice (Koopmeiners) Kluempke on August 5, 1995, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He was a bartender at Ackie’s Pioneer Inn in Freeport and retired after 54 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose

Antoinette C. “Annette” Breth Antoinette C. “Annette” Breth, age 69 of Albany, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 18 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Michael Naughton, O.S.B. officiating.

Antoinette Catherine Austing was born January 2, 1943 in St. Rosa Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Lawrence and Julitta (Stoermann) Austing. Annette worked as a cook at the St. Cloud Hospital after graduation from Melrose High School.

On June 8, 1965 she married Stephen Breth at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. The couple lived on the family farm near St. Anthony since their marriage until their retirement in 2003. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Annette enjoyed gardening and playing cards with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Stephen Breth of Albany; children, Roger (Cindy) Breth of Albany, Jerry (Tammy) Breth of Albany, LuAnn (Tim) Jopp of Albany and Mike (Stephanie) Breth of Albany; grandchildren, Dillon, Miranda, Makayla, Emily, Rebecca, Ashley and Hailey all at home.

Annette was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Julitta Austing.

Big Swan Lake’s northern pike experimental regulation up for review

The public is invited to a discussion of experimental fishing regulations on Todd County’s Big Swan Lake from 6 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18, at Bruno’s Supper Club, 30905 County Road 13, Burtrum.

Located in south-central Todd County near Burtrum, Big Swan Lake covers nearly 900 acres. Since 2008, it has had an experimental northern pike protected slot limit of 24 to 36 inches, with one more than 36 inches, and a daily bag limit of three. Prior to 2008, a 24-inch maximum length limit was in place since 1997. Fisheries data collected since 1997 show an improved size structure of northern pike, with individual pike larger than 36 inches more common in spring assessments than in previous years.

Public input on existing experimental regulations will help DNR fisheries staff determine whether those regulations should be continued, modified or dropped.

August 13, 2012: At 4:49 a.m., Jonathan Robert Kemper of Little Falls was South bound on CSAH 19 when he drove off the roadway right, struck a field approach and over turned. Jonathan was alone at the time and was trapped inside the vehicle. Grey Eagle Rescue assisted at the scene, and Melrose Ambulance Service transported Jonathan to the Melrose Hospital. Jonathan’s 1994 Chev. 4 door Corsica was a total loss.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

There is some confusion pertaining to how the change-over to electronic pull tabs will affect the charitable gaming industry in Minnesota.

Nothing will change in terms of who operates the games played in local bars and restaurants, and the state will not be in competition with those local charities. Paper pull tabs will continue being an option for those who prefer to utilize them. The electronic version, due out later this year, will provide an additional method of playing the same types of games.

I visited with a compliance officer from the Gambling Control Board and was told that, in order for a charity to utilize the new electronic games, they must continue offering the paper version. In addition, two changes in how state taxes

are figured should help the charities. A new tax rate will go into effect that should result in an approximate 8-percent reduction, according to the Department of Revenue. And on July 1, a new method of calculating that tax went into effect that bases the tax on net receipts after games are played instead of making charities pay the tax upfront before the games are played.

These changes should help local charities in terms of cash flow and making tax payments to the state.

Figures released by Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) show that revenue coming into the state in July was 1.2 percent below forecast. General fund revenues in July totaled $921 million, nearly $11 million less than forecast.

Income and sales tax revenues were less than expected for the month, while corporate income taxes were above expectation.

However, for the fiscal year that ended June 30, revenue for the past 12 months exceeded the February forecast by over $336 million.

for next week, the Dayton Administration has come up with a figure of $189 million to help finance the repair of infrastructure damaged by flooding earlier this year in northeastern and southeastern Minnesota.

That amount is over and above the $108 million already figured by FEMA. Whatever the amount allocated by the Legislature, it’s expected to be funded by taking part of it from the reserve fund with the remainder financed by bonding.

In addition, the Department of Agriculture has identified approximately 300 farms that suffered considerable damage from the heavy rain of up to nine inches in one storm back in June.

Temps dropping into the lower 40’s one night last week in southern Minnesota have raised the possibility of an early frost. Even though most crops are a couple of weeks ahead of normal development, a freeze in August would be very damaging. After our hot and humid July, the month of August is behaving more like September with comfortable daytime temps and downright cool evenings. I’ve heard reports of silage harvest getting underway and the pre-lift of sugar beets also starting this week. It seems early, but these cool nights remind one that football season and other fall sports are right around the corner.

Just one parade left on our summer schedule, and it’s a special one. The city of Sedan is celebrating this week, with the occasion marking the 125-year anniversary of the town. The parade, back after a three-year absence, is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Also on tap that day is their popular tug-of-war contest.

Deer licenses now on sale; lottery applications due Sept. 6 Deer hunting licenses are now available for purchase. Hunters who want an either-sex deer or special hunt permit for the coming season must apply by Thursday, Sept. 6, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Hunters should carefully review the list of lottery areas, because many of these permit areas have not been lottery areas for a significant period of time. Currently, 58 of the state’s 127 permit areas are lottery areas.

Many of these areas, focused in the northwest, north central and a portion of northeast Minnesota, were designated lottery areas in response to hunter desire to see higher deer populations.

People can purchase a deer license and apply for the lottery or a special hunt at any DNR license agent, by telephone at 888665-4236 or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. Lottery winners will be notified in October.

Hunters can apply for lottery deer areas and special hunts using both their firearm and muzzleloader licenses. Although a hunter can be selected for both licenses, successful applicants still can only take one deer. In the case of special hunts, a person may draw both a firearm and muzzleloader

Last Saturday Jeff and Korinna Rohde hosted the 2012 Minnesota Holstein Field Day on their farm near Grey Eagle. Everything on the farm was neat and clean, including all the animals. Two-week saturation patrol of passenger carrying vehicles Buses, limousines and other passenger-carrying vehicles will be the focus during statewide saturation patrols scheduled from Aug. 13–27, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Saturation activities will range from traffic enforcement, driver/vehicle inspections, compliance reviews and educational outreach.

The nationwide effort will take place along high-volume routes and at destination locations throughout the state.

Potential areas of focus will be desti-

nation venues such as Target Field, Mall of America, the Metrodome and area casinos. In addition, the strike force will be performing evening and late night saturations in downtown areas, as well as major concert and convention venues around the state.

The National Passenger Carrier Strike Force effort will be led by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration division offices along with the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program partner agencies, MnDOT, Minnesota State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township August 6, 2012 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, John Young, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus and Bev Eggerth.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. John made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the July 2, 2012 minutes to the board. John made the motion to approve the minutes as presented. Ray made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Zoning Report: Bev reported she spoke with Curt Hoffman from the MPCA office about the burning violations; he stated it was an on-

going investigation. A permit was issued for a garage after the project was started, the permit fee plus fine was collected.

The County has adopted some new changes and the board needs to hold a public hearing to adopt them also. This will be held on Sept. 10 at 7:30 at the township hall.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for July.

Claims list included 14 claims for a total of $14,261.97. John made the motion to approve the claims, Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. A date change for the Sept. mtg., it will be held on the 10th of September. Reviewed letters from the Land Stewardship Project and MN Power. Discussion on the billing process for the claim to the DNR for emergency clean-up on the boat access.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of June 30, 2012: $267,397.39;

Road and Bridge Report: John gave his road reports, starting with the culvert on Austin Trl. being completed. Then he began to report on brush cutting project on Ascot Road. Ray asked that it be noted that he is strictly against all this brush cutting. It is uncalled for and getting out of hand to spend that kind of money when we have roads that could use work too. He felt the brush should be left alone to help hold up the roads. John stated that the $5,000 was an estimate and the job is by the hour, including the crew and all the equipment they would be using. Ron stated that while it is the board’s plan to keep working on our roads; we must also keep our signs and ditches clear. John then went on to report that Central Applicators would begin spraying brush, thistle, and other weeds along the roads that were previously cut. This would be at a cost of $300 per mile of spray for both sides of the road. A request was made by a resident for more signs on Ascot Rd. around the curves. John also reported that the dock is in on Big Birch and getting quite a bit of use. He and Mr.Ainali felt in order to save the paint on the dock it might be a good idea to add an apron to keep sand off the dock. John will check with the Lions for their help in this matter. The boat landing that was improved by Herdering Inc. has been used and looks good.

Placement of campaign signs and other unauthorized objects in state highway rights of way is prohibited under MN State Statute 160.27, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. In addition, campaign signs may not be placed on private property outside of the right of way limits without landowner consent.

Highway rights of way include the driving lanes, inside and outside shoulders, ditches and sight corners at intersections.

MnDOT crews will remove any unlawfully placed signs and impound them at one of its local maintenance truck stations.

Violation of the law is a misdemeanor. Civil penalties also may apply if the placement of such material contributes to a motor vehicle crash and injures a person or damages a motor vehicle that runs off the road.

In addition, the Minnesota Outdoor Advertising Control Act (MN State Statute 173.15) prohibits erecting advertising devices on public utility poles, trees and shrubs, and painting or drawing on rocks or natural features.

MnDOT administers these laws in a fair and impartial manner. Political campaign signs are treated in the same way as any other signs wrongly placed on state highway property by businesses, churches, private citizens or charitable groups.

A road crew supervisor hired Ole to assist with painting the yellow line down the middle of the road. He was skeptical about hiring him, but he appeared enthusiastic and told him that he really needed the job. At least his wife Lena told him he needed the job.

He explained to Ole that his work day would be to complete 2 miles of line on the road, and he was set up with brushes and paint and his boss got him started.

After the first day, the supervisor was pleased to find that he did an excellent job and was able to paint 4 miles of road in his 8 hour shift.

He told him that he did an outstanding job and how pleased he was with his progress.

On the second day, Ole completed painting 2 miles of road.

His supervisor was surprised that on day one, he had completed twice as much work, but did not say anything, as 2 miles of road was the amount that the job required anyway. He decided to just accept it, and to look forward to the next

day when he was sure that he would pick up his speed again.

On day 3, the supervisor was shocked to learn that in his 8 hour shift, Ole only completed painting 1 mile of road.

He was called to the supervisor’s office and asked what was the problem .. “On your first day, you completed 4 miles of road, on your second day, 2 miles of road, and now on day 3, you were only able to complete 1 mile of road. Can I ask you, what is the problem?”

“Vell,” Ole replied, “I’ll tell you vhat, but I tought you vould know. Every day I vas getting farder and farder avay from da paint can.”
