Look around you. What do you see? If you were asked to be a witness at a trial, would you be able to remember details and conditions? One of the qualities of successful people in all walks of life is keen observation of things about them. They notice things about people, human nature and the general world around them. Many of us, unfortunately, go through life with our eyes half closed. Perhaps you remember the story of the two streakers who interrupted a New York Yankees baseball game when Yogi Berra was the catcher for the Yankees. In the bottom of the ninth inning, two young people suddenly ran onto the field stark naked, slid into home plate, and then ran off again. Asked later if the streakers were boys or girls, Yogi replied, “I don’t know. They were wearing bags over

their heads.” Of course, Yogi also famously said, “You can observe a lot just by watching.” That’s why we love Yogi, even though his observations are mind-boggling. Most people are easily distracted and not aware of what is going on around them. Being a keen observer is very important in life. Perhaps one of the most famous “observers” in history is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes character. Holmes’ method of detection was “based on the observation of trifles.” To him, absolutely nothing was insignificant. Clues and information were all around, if only people would take notice. Doyle’s readers are challenged to recall and relate details of his stories to solve the mysteries. Dr. Joseph Bell was the physician said to be the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was particularly interested in Bell’s emphasis on the importance of close observation in making a diagnosis. For example, Bell told the story of a famous surgeon who used to tell his stu-

dents that a doctor needed two abilities: freedom from nausea and the power of keen observation. One day he poured kerosene, castor oil and mustard into a little cup. He dipped a finger into the foul liquid and then sucked his finger. He passed the cup around to every student in the class and asked them to do the same. Reluctantly, the students did as the professor requested. After all the students had dipped into the vile liquid, the professor remarked to the class: “I am afraid that not one of you used your powers of observation. The finger I put into the cup was not the same one that I stuck in my mouth.” Observation has practical applications in business, according to the Royal Bank of Canada newsletter: a businessperson being able to size up a situation accurately and quickly; an engineer who can scan a factory floor and notice key aspects of workflow; a sales representative who can tell how best to approach Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

So he devised a plan to fill his belly before the other animals could figure out his secret. He limped back to his den where he collapsed, feigning grave injury and illness and announced that his time on the plains would soon fade into the sunset. One by one the animals of the forest came to pay their respects. And one by one they disappeared as the lazy lion licked away any evidence of their visits. But when the fox came to visit, he maintained a cautious distance outside the lion’s cave. “Who is that I hear stirring about?”

whispered the lion. “It is I,” said the fox. “Come closer friend for I can barely see you.” “No,” said the fox. Some distance between us is best. I see many footprints leading into your den, but none leaving.” The lion roared in anger, causing the fox and other animals to scurry into the forest. The fox was hailed as a hero, and the animals of the forest learned a valuable lesson: Those who are wise and observant learn from the mistakes of others. Obituaries Mary E. Marsolek

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM on Friday, August 16, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Mary E. Marsolek, 53 of Albany. Mary was diagnosed with cancer on November 27, 2009; she passed away on August 11, 2013, at the Hilltop Care Center in Watkins. Inurnment will be at the Parish Cemetery. The Reverend Blane Wasnie, OSB will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Joseph, and from 9:00-10:00 AM on Friday at the Church in Avon. Parish Prayers will be at 4:15 PM on Thursday at the Funeral Home in St. Joseph.

Eva Kierzek of Avon, Minnesota passed away August 2, 2013. Funeral service was held August 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Avon. Intermet was at St. Benedict’s Parish

Cemetery. Eva was born on December 24, 1919 in St. Anna, Minnesota to the late Joseph Dobis and Victoria (Schitchta) Dobis. She married Alois S. Kierzek on October 17, 1938. Eva was employed as a seamstress for the Fingerhut Corporation in St. Cloud for over 15 years then worked at the Eastside Laundry in St. Cloud for 10 years until retiring. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon,

Mary was born on September 6, 1959, in Little Falls, MN to John and Dorothy (Ziemba) Gallus. She graduated from Holdingford High School. Mary started her career at DeZuriks as an Office Clerk at the age of 18 and worked her way up to a Master Scheduler in the Foundry. In June of 2002 she became a Buyer for the Purchasing Department, dedicating 35 years to DeZurik. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Mary loved being outside: walking, gardening, yard work, tanning, just opening a cold one! She enjoyed cooking and baking for others. She always made sure her truck was the cleanest on the block. Mary is survived by: sons Cody (Darcy) of Albany, Clint (Taylor) of St. Joseph; grandson Cole; brothers and sisters, Nina, John, Ellie, Diane, Gene, Delphine, Carol, Jim, Patty, and Tim; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Angie and Theresa.

St. Benedict’s Christian Women and the St. Benedict’s sewing circle. Eva loved gardening, especially growing tomatoes. She enjoyed sewing and embroidering of which she made pillow cases for her children and grandchildren. She was a fabulous cook, enjoyed baking and could be counted on to make her famous coffee cake for holidays. Eva was particularly fond of playing Bingo. Survivors include children, Kenneth (Rita), of Avon, Carol (Harold) Hinnenkamp, Maple Lake, Lenny, Avon, Audrey (Lonny) Eibensteiner, Lino Lakes; grandchildren, Jill, Shelley, Todd, Kim, Ken, Kayla and Chad; 8 greatgrandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband Alois on October 14, 1984; siblings, Mary Kociemba, Julia Tholl, Gertrude Bianga, Frances Smith, Veronica Woidyla, Vincent Dobis, Louis Dobis; infant brother and sister, Edward and Clara.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Herbert W. Breth, age 81, was held at 11:00AM, Thursday, August 8, 2013 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, MN. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Herb died Monday morning at the Pine Haven Care Center in Melrose. Herb was born July 9, 1932 in St. Anthony, MN to Stephen and Catherine (Gerads) Breth. He retired in 1994 and the couple returned to St. Anthony. Herb was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, St. Stephens Catholic Church Knights of Columbus in Anoka, Anoka American Legion and Coon Rapids V.F.W. Herb is survived by his children; Jan (Randy) Beers, Columbia Heights; Jim Breth, Isanti; Debra Conard, Woodbury; grandchildren, Brett, Stephanie, Rachel and Hannah. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Dorain Layton, Portland, OR; Reinhard Breth, Upsala; Irene Pierskalla, Albany; and Stephen Breth Jr., Albany. Herb is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene, his son, Jeff and his brothers, Martin Breth and Werner Breth.

Schedules for Upsala Junior/Senior High School students in grades 7-12 will be available beginning Monday, August 19th. Students and/or parents may pick up the schedules in the district office. Students entering Grade 12 and Grade 11 can schedule 10 minute counseling sessions with Mr. Capelle and Mrs. Glaser during office hours Monday, August 19th - Wednesday, Aug. 21st. Upsala Ballpark Association (UBA) and Blue Jays getting the bid to host the 2014 region tournament. There is currently lots of volunteer and contracted work being done and lots more improvements planned for this fall and next spring to be ready for this tournament. UBA is an organization started by local Upsala residents for the purpose of improving Upsala ball parks. Submitted by BJ Lange The Upsala Blue Jays beat St. Stephen Steves 8-3 Saturday, August 3rd to make it to the State Class C Amateur Baseball Tournament. This is the first time the Blue Jays have made it since they started in 1987. Eric Lampert and Brady Burggraff were named All Tournament Team, Region 8c. Eric Lampert, 6-13, led the team in tournament hits with a bb, sacrifice, 2 rbi and a run. Had an rbi single in the 10th inning in the elimination game against Buckman and had 2 hits and an rbi in the win over St. Stephen. Started the final 3 games at 3rd base and handled every chance (1616) flawlessly. Brady Burggraff, 5-18 with a double, bb, sac fly, stolen base, 3 rbi and 3 runs. His 2-run single in the 8th inning broke a 3-3 tie against St. Stephen in the State play-in game and helped clinch Upsala’s first ever State Tournament berth. They play Saturday, August 17 at 4:00 p.m. in Delano against the Midway Snurdbirds. They are also looking ahead with the

Ron Kresha As you may have heard, the legislature is tentatively scheduled to hold a special session on September 9th to pass much-needed disaster relief funds from the major storms that affected many parts of Minnesota earlier this year. Governor Dayton and DFL leaders have since expressed support for repealing the farm equipment repair tax that went into effect July 1 during special session. This is welcome news, and I’m glad that we will be providing our farmers relief from this burdensome tax. A new maintenance and repair tax that began July 1 means it now costs more to get your combine, tractor or other piece of equipment fixed. The warehousing tax may exempt certain products like soybeans and corn, but farmers will still have to pay more for fertilizer, fuel and storage of any equipment that passes through a warehouse. And it doesn’t stop there - non-partisan House research projects that agriculture properties will see a 6.5 percent increase in their property taxes. The agriculture industry accounts for about one in five jobs here in Minnesota. Agriculture is the backbone of our state, and one of the main drivers of our economy. Farmers are the ones that put food on our table and help produce fuel for our vehicles; raising their costs just doesn’t make sense to me. While these taxes should have never been proposed in the first place, I’m encouraged that Gov. Dayton and some Democrats are already discussing the potential repeal of these harmful taxes. Spruce needle rust appearing in northern Minnesota Homeowners in northern Minnesota are noticing their spruce trees turning tan, yellow, orange or sometimes, pink. Most likely these trees are infected with the spruce needle rust fungus, which presents an aesthetic problem but seldom a tree health problem, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Spruce needle rust infects currentyear needles of blue spruce but can also

be found on white and black spruce. Infected needles will turn yellow and then shed in the fall. However, healthy buds on the ends of the branches will produce new needles the following year. “Seeing favorite ornamental trees turn a rusty color and appear to be dying can cause concern, but homeowners shouldn’t rush to cut them down,” said Mike Albers, DNR forest health specialist. “The fungus only infects the current

Road and Bridge Report: Trygg Hanson from the Sauk Rapids DNR office of Parks and Trails was present to determine the future of the DNR access on Mound Lake near Shipwreck’s. He stated it was never recorded as a public road only a DNR road which means the property owners going off of the access have no legal ingress and egress to their property. Several of the property owners that were present stated that it was part of the original deed. Mr. Hanson then stated they would be willing to grant the Township a road easement and then the township could maintain it as a minimum maintenance road or however they decide later. The DNR would be willing to do some upgrades to improve the road before granting the easement. The township could then apply for state park road money and work with the county engineer if that is what is decided. The township will discuss this topic further and Mr. Hanson will bring more information at a later date. The DNR also plans to improve the boat landing yet this summer. Discussion on road work done this month includes 311th, 116th gravel, 337th- new culvert, 116th at the top of the hill. Some discussion on whether or not to do some brushing this year. Some bad spots are the corner of 337th and Brakken Road and along Ascot, and the Stearns Line Road. It was decided to have Erv. M do all the roads south of County 2 this year and spray next year. The clerk presented a draft of the tree removal policy for the Township, supervisors will review them and revisions will be made at the next meeting. Additional agenda items: Ray reported he had found someone to make a grate for the dock at a price much less than first quoted. Ron made the motion to purchase the grate second by Mike. In early summer, the rust fungus produces spores on the leaves of Labrador tea or leather leaf, which grow in peatlands, bogs and swamps. Winds can blow these spores onto current-year spruce needles. If the weather is wet and cool, needles can become infected. Rust fungus produced by the infected tree can reinfect and overwinter on alternate host plants, but this is generally interrupted by changing weather conditions. A widespread infection one year can be undetectable the next. Chemical control with a fungicide is usually not helpful and cannot cure the infected needles. Library looks for feedback on open hours Great River Regional Library (GRRL) wants to know when you’d like to use the library. The library has posted an open hours survey on its website, griver.org. Staff want to know: • Which GRRL location you use the most • Whether you would prefer the library to be open the same hours each day or a range of morning, afternoon, and evening hours • What day(s) of the week you use the library • Which day of the week you wish the library was open • What time of day you are most likely to use the library • Which time of day you wish the library was open GRRL is the library system that operates 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. GRRL provides the staff, materials and technology for library service; local municipalities provide the buildings. Open hours are set by GRRL.

Library open hours range from 20 to 59 hours per week, depending on activity level and community size. In general, the libraries in small communities are open fewer hours than those in larger communities. GRRL staff review library use each year, determining not only the quantity of material checked out, but also the times of day when libraries are busiest. “A lot of what goes on at the library is recorded on our computers. That information provides a mine of data we are able to use to determine how busy we are,” said Karen Pundsack, GRRL’s Patron Services Coordinator. “What we don’t know is how many people might use the library if the hours changed. We hope the survey can provide some of that information.” Evaluating open hours and making adjustments to enhance patron access is a priority written into the library’s strategic plan. The survey will be available through August. Staff will review the data and make any necessary changes for 2014.

Quit tobacco through five weekly group sessions led by experts from the CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center at St. Cloud Hospital. The class will run for five consecutive Tuesdays from 5:306:30 p.m. starting Tuesday, Sept. 10 in the Heart Center’s third floor library. Deadline to register is Sept. 5. Find success through the program’s personalized treatment, support group, medication therapy, relapse prevention and self-help plan. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death accounting for approximately 443,000 deaths in the United States each year - about one of every five deaths. People who use tobacco are at higher risk of stroke and heart attack. “The cigarette industry spends billions on advertising and promotions each year,” said Sarah Volker, a tobacco treatment specialist from the CentraCare Heart & Vascular Center. “Your health is priceless and we want to help anyone who would like to discontinue use of nicotine.” According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 46 million people smoke in the United States, which is 19.3 percent of adults 18 years and older.
