The ABCs of Risk-taking -By Harvey Mackay One of the reasons we admire people who take risks is that most of us are scared stiff at the prospect of taking risks ourselves.

“I could never do something like that,” we say. The “something” we could never do might be anything from starting a new career to learning how to cook something. It doesn’t matter. Sometimes it seems that the only people who can take risks successfully are the people who have nothing to lose.

You’ve got to go out on a limb sometimes – but not so far that you fall off.

To help you in these perilous times, I’ve come up with my ABCs of risk-taking: A is for apprehension. Taking a large or small risk comes with a degree of apprehension.

B is for bravery. Afraid to try something new? Most people are.

C is for challenging. Don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. If you win, you will be happy. If you lose, you will be wise.

D is for differentiator. Some risks can make or break your business.

E is for enterprising. Thinking outside the box to find the information you need

or to get the project accomplished is one of the traits that I really admire in people.

F is for flexibility. Nearly all the successful people I know have dealt with defeat, slumps, failures, change and adversities of every nature. The reason they are successful despite all that is they had the confidence and courage to face those setbacks and find a way to overcome them.

G is for genius. Recognizing a genius idea is one of the traits that characterizes serious risk-takers.

H is for healthy. Approach risk with a healthy skepticism, then assess the real hazards and benefits to reach a reasonable path to fulfillment.

I is for inherent. From taking your first step to investing your life savings in a new venture, nearly every activity we undertake in our lives involves taking risks.

J is for jealousy. Never take a risk out of jealousy for another’s accomplishments, because it will end in disaster. Instead, study their success and learn how they turned risk into success.

K is for knock it out of the park. You can’t hit a homerun unless you take a swing at the ball.

L is for leap of faith. Every major decision requires a leap of faith. In the final analysis, what your inner voice tells you is the best advice you can get.

M is for mission. A clearly defined mission makes managing risk considerably easier. If you know where you want to go, you can anticipate some of the landmines along the way.

N is for nerve. Risk-taking often requires nerves of steel to face the inevitable challenges and failures involved with big risks.

O is for originality. Hanging around with creative people helps you understand different ways of looking at the world and stimulates your thought processes to more original ideas.

P is for possibilities. When you see

what is possible, you are more inclined to take a risk that will pay off.

Q is for quit. Quit complaining, quit dragging your feet, quit talking yourself out of what could be a fabulous opportunity because you are afraid to take the risk.

R is for realistic. Taking risks can reap big rewards, but only if the venture is realistic.

S is for stepping out of your comfort zone. No risk, no success.

T is for turtles. A turtle only makes progress when it sticks its neck out.

U is for undaunted. Understand that failure will happen. There will be some pain and failure. It’s part of life.

V is for visionaries because risktakers don’t see things as they really are.

Visionaries exercise a lot more control over the outcome of events.

W is for willpower, which keeps people hammering away. Determined people possess the stamina and courage to pursue their ambitions despite criticism, ridicule or unfavorable circumstances.

X is for eXhilerating. Young people especially take risks for the thrill and as part of normal development.

Y is for yes you can. When others say no you can’t, and you see a better way forward, ignore the nay-sayers and tell yourself yes you can.

Z is for zinger. When you get a zinger of an idea, zero in on how you can make it happen. There’s no greater feeling in business than to know the risks you take are paying off.

Mackay’s Moral: Sometimes it’s risky not to take a risk.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne More Early Stories At a time when there were very limited opportunities to earn cash money, people had to think of unusual ways to earn a buck. Some used skills and crafts learned at earlier times in their lives. Here are some of the things they would do.

One of the most interesting methods involved commercial fishing.

The kids lived in Grey Eagle and the most commonly fished lake, Big Swan Lake, was about 2 ½ miles North of town.

To get to the lake, the two kids needed to take the team and wagon through a heavily wooded area to a row boat kept on the shore of the lake. Upon arrival, the kids took their cane poles and grub worms and rowed to the fish beds. They had no nets. They caught sunfish and crappies and when it was time to leave the lake, one rowed and the other would remove the guts and gills from the fish.

It worked quite well, since the unwanted parts were thrown into the lake. The kids would gather empty barrels from the grocery stores, since many grocery items were delivered to the store in barrels. The barrel was taken to the depot and a layer of ice was put in the bottom, followed by a layer of fish placed belly down and back upward to make a solid layer. Then more ice and fish until the fish were gone. The barrel was then topped off with ice and a cover put on. The barrels were shipped to a wholesaler in Minneapolis. The kids were paid from 4 ½ to 7 ½ cents per

pound. There were no game wardens or slot limits at the time, so the kids caught an average of 200 fish per day, with a maximum number of 504 as one day’s catch.

At age 16, the 8 years of schooling were completed. The kids then took the train to western Minnesota and eastern Dakota to work in the harvest fields. They would shock grain for $2.00 per day plus board and room. Board was regular meals and the room was on a hay pile in the barn.

After thrashing began the pay was $2.25 per day plus board and room for loading and moving loads of grain bundles to the grain separator. This work usually lasted from 4 to 6 weeks. In one situation, the kid was allowed to sleep on the kitchen floor, which required that he feed and harness the teams before the rest of the workers woke up. To compare, a new pair of shoes at that time cost $2.00.

In many cases the young folks that worked away from their home farm sent a majority of the earnings home to help the family pay the mortgage or other family expenses. There was a belief at that time that the farm was a family farm and everyone in the family needed to work to make it successful.

Those kids from town were usually able to keep more of their earnings to pay future education expenses. Some attended 9th grade, which was a college prep study.

In our area, the most attended college was St. Cloud. Many courses were offered there, especially teachers prep courses. As to the living expenses while at college, a student paid $5.00 per month for a room shared with one other person. The same student paid $3.25 per week for 3 meals per day. This equals about $20.00 per month.

occupations that have disappeared, one that has gone is cigar manufacturing. At one time there was a cigar manufacturing location in both Grey Eagle and Long Prairie. Today one would have to travel a long way to buy a hand made cigar from a cigar factory.

Last weekend Anthony Wessel and I watched an adult Loon catch and kill a good size sunfish then feed into its juvenile loon. This was on Little Birch Lake north of Melrose. They allowed us to float fairly close with our boat as they were only interested in downing the sunfish. The first few minutes or so the adult loon kept stabbing (killing) the sunfish before giving it to the younger one. It took about 15 minutes for the younger loon to finally swallow it as it was a big fish. It looked like it was choking on it as it spit it out many times before it could finally swallow the whole thing. Submitted by Ron Lahr.

Angela “Angie” Hopfer

Nancy Marlene Schulte was born on November 17, 1968, in Melrose, MN, to Justin and Alma (Frericks) Schulte. Nancy was raised in the Freeport area and graduated from Melrose High School with the class of 1987. After high school, she furthered her education at Central Lakes College in Brainerd, MN and graduated from SCSU with a Social Work degree. While going to college in Brainerd, she met the love of her life and future husband Leonard Holmer.

Leonard Lewis Holmer was born October 15, 1969 in Park Rapids, Minnesota and is the son of Roger and Helen (Deitchler) Holmer. He grew up and attended school in Park Rapids, graduating with the class of 1988. He attended Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd and furthered his education at NDSU, graduating with a degree in Agronomy.

On November 27, 2004 Nancy and Lennie were united in marriage in Freeport, Minnesota. They made their home in the Perham area. Nancy worked at Northwinds Memory Care Unit and Lennie farmed with his family.

Lennie and Nancy loved spending time together, and enjoyed shared activities such as traveling, motorcycling, and spending time with their families and friends. They also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and flying Lennie’s plane.

On Sunday August 2, 2020, Nancy and Lennie passed away together in Shell Lake Township, Becker County, Minnesota.

Nancy is survived by her mother, Alma Schulte; siblings, Joyce (Frank) Koopmeiners, Sue (Leroy) Tweet, Chuck Schulte, Tom (Janet) Schulte, Pam (Kurt) Scherping, Karen (Steve) Zwack, and Brian (Amy) Schulte; nieces and nephews: Kayla (Dustin), Arica, Justin, Cody, Katie, Brooke, Ryan, Melissa, Maddison, Emily, Katelyn, and Ethan; great niece and nephew: Elle and Elijah.

Angela M. “Angie” Hopfer, age 37, of Greenwald passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at her home in Greenwald, Minnesota.

Per Angie’s request, no public service will be held.

Angie was born March 7, 1983 in Melrose, Minnesota to Dave and Linda (Thelen) Klaphake.

She married Rob Hopfer on January 28, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked at CentraCare in St. Cloud for many years.

Angie enjoyed reading, spending time with friends, and watching movies with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Rob Hopfer and their children, Terry Clinton and Malia Hopfer of Greenwald; parents, Dave and Linda Klaphake of Melrose; father and mother-in-law, Dan and Mary Hopfer of Melrose; sister, Katie (Jon) Gonzalez of Kingston; sister-in-law, Amy (Isaac) Stumler of Melrose; brother-in-law, Tim (Shanna) Hopfer of Spring Hill; nieces and nephews, Destiny Hopfer, Aiden Hopfer, Niley Hopfer, Sullivan Stumler, Roman Stumler, and Leo Gonzalez; grandparents, Alice Klaphake of Melrose and Mark and Evelyn Thelen of Melrose; and uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Todd County Sheriff’s Office

August 8, 2020: At 14:15 hours, a two vehicle accident without injures was reported at the intersection of County Road 47 and County Road 2 South of Grey Eagle. A 2013 Toyota mini van driven by Andrei Shofman of Lakeville was making a left turn onto County Road 2 from 47 when he did not see a 2003 Chevy truck driven by Paul Koetter of Swanville. Shofman pulled into the intersection and hit the Koetter truck on the passenger side. All parties were wearing seat belts.

Grey Eagle Rescue, Melrose Ambulance and State Patrol assisted at the scene.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Car versus Bicycle Crash: Aug. 11, 2020: At approx. 11:19 a.m., the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a bicycle versus car crash. The caller reported that the cyclist had serious injuries. The location of the crash was given as Main Street near Plymouth Street in the City of Holdingford. The Wobegon Trail in Holdingford crosses Main Street just north of Plymouth Street.

Camille Klepaida, 38 of Albany, was driving her maroon 2004 Chevrolet Impala southbound on Main Street from County Road 17. Christopher Tacl, 66 of St. Cloud, was riding his bicycle northeast on the Wobegon Trail. Tacl failed to stop for the trail stop sign, striking the Impala on the passenger side. According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, Tacl was given immediate medical assistance by Klepaida and another bystander until Holdingford Fire and Rescue arrived on scene.

Mayo Ambulance also responded to the scene. Tacl was later airlifted from the scene by North Memorial Air Care to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale. Tacl suffered life-threatening injuries and is listed in critical condition.

The Minnesota State Patrol also assisted with crash reconstruction and the crash remains under investigation. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office reminds all trail users to use caution on area trails and to obey all stop signs and other safety signage.

The College of St. Scholastica has announced its list of conferred graduates for Spring 2020. They include the following local students: Cody Pundsack of Melrose, MN. Pundsack graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance.

Savana Bitz, of Grey Eagle, MN, graduate of Melrose Area High School and member of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s swimming & diving team, is one of 373 UW-Whitewater student-athletes representing all 22 of the institution’s varsity sport programs were named to the 2019-20 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Honor Roll.

Bitz, who was a freshman in 2019-20, is majoring in biology.

The Warhawks’ 12 women’s teams had 200 honorees, while 173 student-athletes from the 10 men’s teams garnered Scholastic Honor Roll accolades. The Honor Roll is part of the “WIAC Scholar-Athlete Recognition Program”.

In addition to the 373 individual awards, UW-Whitewater was named an All-Academic institution as student-athletes earned a GPA equal to, or greater than, the collective GPA of the overall student body.

To be eligible for the list, student-athletes must have carried a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Swanville City July 7, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Jim Molitor, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, and Tony Maciej. Absent: Sandy Lange. Also present: Ashley Meagher and reporter Sheila McCoy. Jim Molitor serving as acting Mayor in the absence of Mayor Lange.

Minutes from the June 2, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes.

Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made

by Deb Wood and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Ashley Meagher, auditor form Schlenner, Wenner & Company, presented the city audit for 2019. Meagher stated no significate issues with any statements, errors or any issues that would raise a red flag. Overall, the audit went smoothly. After explaining the audit by Meagher and discussion by council, Tony Maciej made a motion to accept the 2019 audit. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A letter of intent to vacate from the Swanville Dentist Office was received. Council accepted the vacate. The dentist office is closed and will be emptied by the first part of August. The dentist office has been serving the area for many years and will be missed by many.

A land use permit was submitted by Deb Walburn to build a 30’x38’ house at 106 Rhoda Avenue. The application was looked at approved by the P & Z committee.

Norm Carlson made a motion to approve the land use permit for Walburn. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The council was presented with the COVID-19 preparedness plan for the City of Swanville. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the COVID-19 preparedness plan as written. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Affidavits of Candidacy for the City of Swanville, General Election will open July 28 through August 11, 2020 until 4:00 p.m. Expiring elected offices are: Mayor (2 year) position, and two Council members (4-year terms). Council members terms expiring are Norm Carlson and Deb Wood.

If you can’t do that at a reasonable price out of pocket, I’d be in the market for a decent, used log splitter. And pay cash! I get your line of thinking when it comes to increasing productivity. Splitting wood is real work. But don’t try to justify buying an expensive, new piece of equipment when it’s just not necessary.

If you’re making that much with a side hustle, you can make your money back on a used splitter in a month or two—three at the most. Be smart about it, Chris!

Dear Motor Medics, I am the proud owner of a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan that has had at least 6 sets of brakes on it.

Mind you I only have 130k miles on the vehicle. You may think it is just my heavy foot resting on the brake pedal with that kind of replacement history, but I have owned it since new and the first set lasted for 90k miles. The front have only been changed three times, but it is the back that give me the trouble. The passenger side rear keeps sticking and at night they sometimes glow red they are so hot.

-Kyle in Larchwood, Iowa Ouch! That is way too many brake jobs for any vehicle in that low mileage. Unless you are doing some heavy towing or riding the brakes, they should not need more than a few sets of brakes in that time on average.

When you say the rear has been replaced that many times but the front only three It makes us wonder about the shape of the rear system other than just the pads and rotors. The brake calipers and caliper brackets must all move freely, and the brake hoses all need to be in good shape. If any of these components have failed it will lead to repeat brake failure. Check with the mechanic doing the repairs and ask what parts have been replaced and make sure that all of the components have been checked.

The Uplander is a great platform and we usually see the body outlast the drivetrain with many of our own customers replacing a transmission or engine or both before they reach 200k miles. Your 350k is an exception to the norm. You obviously have been doing a good job of changing fluids and filters and driving the car with care or else you would not have come this far. As for what you can do to keep it running, keep doing what you have been and keep those fingers crossed. One of the most common failures on this engine is the intake gaskets or head gaskets. It really is an expensive fix and many people will add a bottle of KSeal which helps prevent future leaks in a cooling system to help keep the car on the road a little longer. Good luck Phil.
