The irony has not escaped customers, who will be the final arbiter of the current options.

Electronic self-service may be the wave of the future for many organizations, but lots of consumers are bucking the trend. The CRM Buyer website reports that researchers surveyed more than 24,000 consumers in 12 countries about customer interactions, and here’s what they found: • Eighty percent prefer customer service from a human being instead of an automated system.

• Eighty-three percent say that interacting with a customer service rep is important on the phone or in a store.

• Sixty-eight percent believe they’re more likely to get a better deal when negotiating in person instead of online.

• Eighteen percent said they would renew products or services because of good personal customer service, even if they were more expensive.

Good, personalized customer service is that important.

Companies are facing new and serious issues meeting the expectations of customers in the current climate. Hiring difficulties, pandemic restrictions, merchandise shortages and financial challenges have made many organizations

rethink their practices. And stressed employees need support more than ever as they handle extra work and procedures.

In addition, customers who got accustomed to online shopping and home delivery have meant many businesses have had to make adjustments to the services they offer.

Those challenges aren’t disappearing soon.

And an unhappy customer who receives poor service can make or break a business. Bad online reviews can cripple an otherwise thriving business.

So the one constant that must not suffer in the midst of all these obstacles is good customer service. There are some fundamentals to keep in mind to achieve that goal.

Hire the right people. The rule is you either hire smart or manage tough. Hiring smart is better, but it requires you to know what you’re looking for and to recognize the skills and attitude you want. Look at experience and listen to your gut.

Keep score. If you don’t measure performance, your team will be in perpetual warm-up mode. Let employees know what they’re being measured on and how it is relevant to them, their customers, and the organization’s bottom line.

Reward. Make sure you reward the desired outcome. For instance, if you want your salespeople to create relationships and long-term accounts, reward them with backend commissions, bonuses or some form of appreciation.

Practice what you preach. If you want a motivated customer service rep, you need to be motivated yourself first. Are you genuinely excited about the work your group produces?

You need to love your customers, because if you’re not sincerely motivated yourself, you’ll never motivate other people to provide excellent service.

Being put on hold on the phone is a pet peeve for most of us. Although you may have to put a client or customer on hold, offer them the courtesy of waiting or getting a call-back.

Give employees the power to actually serve

the customer’s needs.

Steve Hardison, who went on to become a successful executive coach, began his career in sales at Xerox. Product returns were against company policy at the time, but according to a story in the Chicago Tribune, one day Hardison decided to let one of his customers return a copier regardless of the rule. When his boss demanded an explanation, Hardison said, “If I lose a job because I took care of a customer, then I never had a job.”

The next day his boss’s boss called him into his office. Hardison fully expected to get fired.

Instead, the executive said, “I wish I had more people like you.” His reputation for honesty and integrity was made.

Referring to a column on customer service a few years back, one of my loyal readers sent me an email about the power of personal touch. He and his wife serve on the welcoming committee at their church. Before each service, they try to greet as many people as they can with “happiness and appreciation,” visitors or members alike.

He mentioned an occasion on vacation when attending another church, only one person spoke to them. As they left, the pastor greeted them, and that made all the difference in the world.

Mackay’s Moral: Make “at your service” your motto.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Homemade Soap

Some of us can remember walking into the kitchen and being greeted by an unpleasant strong smell. The smell doesn't alarm you, since you've noticed that smell before and the strong rather unpleasant odor is quite recognizable.

You don't have to be told that the lady of the house is making soap.

Today if we need soap, we go to the store and buy it. In earlier years, soap was made at home for a variety of reasons. Some of them included knowledge, familiarity, economy and being able to change leftover grease into something worthwhile.

The ability to make soap was a skill that was passed down from mothers to daughters for many generations. As a result, making soap was something that was part of the household duties.

They knew how to do it and it wasn't considered an undesirable chore. Their experience told them what the creation of soap required and how the finished product should feel and smell.

They were aware of the amount of soap that needed to be formed into bar soap for personal washing and how much soap would be cooled in a cake pan to be cut into the required shape for washing clothes, floors and dishes. When the soap was added to wash dishes or clothes it needed to be shaved from the soap chunk to create smaller soap pieces that more easily

dissolved in the water. They knew how much soap to add to the washer to wash the white clothes and still be soapy enough to wash the denim and other dark clothing items. If the wash water was not too dirty, one more load was added to the water, which included the work or barn clothes. Remember, in those days warm water didn't appear by turning on the faucet.

Making soap at home was a very cost effective effort. The old saying, “waist not, want not,” certainly applied to soap making.

The basic recipe to make soap included water, lye and grease. In some cases good smelling additives were added to create a more pleasant product. These additives were usually found in the garden or flower patch. Lye was created by dripping water into ashes. The moisture that dripped from the ash mixture was lye. Water was readily available as were wood ashes, both basically free. Grease was a common byproduct of frying beef or pork. Pork grease was usually saved in a jar on top of the wood stove. Pork fat and beef tallow were usually an unneeded leftover from the butchering process.

When heated it turns into the grease used for soap. I have been told that soap created by beef fat was a more solid product and that pork grease made a softer soap. In those days there wasn't a choice of 20 different body soaps and 15 different wash day products, but for those that lived those days were perfectly happy with soap that either had a slight odor of flowers or just a bit of lye smell.

When one considers that a needed product was created from things that cost nothing, it was a really smart creation during difficult economic times.

So, if as we have been told, we are to be expecting inflation to the point that money is

worthless, we should all adopt a pig. This single effort will allow us to have a supply of meat for our family and also have a supply of soap so that we can look clean and well fed. It will make the neighbors think that we are able to survive the economic downturn much better than they.

James J. “Jim” Kluempke

James J. “Jim” Kluempke, age 78 of Grey Eagle, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 at his home on Big Birch Lake surrounded by his wife and children after a short but brave battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 16 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating.

Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls where military honors will be provided.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church in Grey Eagle.

James Joseph Kluempke was born January 16, 1943 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Mary (Gieske) Kluempke. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964, stationed in Munich, Germany.

On July 12, 1969 he married Catherine Mohs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. After their marriage, they moved to Columbia Heights where they made their home for 49 years. Jim worked in the liquor and wine industry his entire working career. He was employed with Ed Phillips & Sons of Minneapolis/Johnson Brothers of St. Paul. Two years ago, Jim and Cathy moved to Grey Eagle to their lake home on Big Birch Lake. In the earlier years, Jim was very involved in his children’s sports and other activities and that same involvement continued with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Survivors include his wife, Cathy Kluempke of Grey Eagle; children, Keith (Cindy) Kluempke of Sauk Rapids, Karla (Gary) Mortensen of Albany, and Kirk (Allison) Kluempke of Brooklyn Park; grandchildren, Nolan and Owen Kluempke, and Kane Mortensen; siblings, Dave Kluempke of Big Birch Lake-Melrose, Nona (Larry) Knoblach of Plymouth, Dick (Rosemary) Kluempke of Portland, Oregon; sister-in-law, Carol Kluempke of Portland, Oregon, Tom (Judy) Kluempke of Melrose, Pat (Tracy) Kluempke of Stillwater, and George (Eva) Kluempke of Big Watab Lake-Cold Spring.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe Kluempke Jr; and sister-in-law, Ann Kluempke.

Serving as urn bearer will be Nolan Kluempke, cross bearer will be Owen Kluempke, and scripture bearer will be Kane Mortensen.

Memorials are preferred to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) Foundation.

Katy Lynn Panek

Katy Lynn Panek, 20 year old resident of Burtrum, MN passed away Tuesday, August 3, 2021 in Elmdale, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial took place on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Father David Grundman officiating. Burial was in St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery in Elmdale, MN. Katy was born on March 27, 2001 in St. Cloud, MN to Jim and Kellie (Boylan) Panek.

She grew up in the Elmdale area and attended school in Upsala, MN graduating from Upsala High School. Katy was currently employed at Dobis Dairy Farm. This job brought her great joy as she had a love and passion for caring and raising animals. Katy will be forever remembered as a super sweet, hardworking young lady that always put others needs before her own. She loved her family dearly, her many siblings, mother, Kellie but deep down she was a daddy’s girl to her father Jim. Katy was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Loren J. “Bubba” Ritter

Loren J. “Bubba” Ritter, age 54 of Merrifield, formerly of St. Rosa, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at his home in Merrifield, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, August 11 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Loren John Ritter was born January 6, 1967 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to George T. and Rita (Athmann) Ritter. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1985. Loren worked on the family farm and at Jennie-O Foods until he joined the Minnesota Army National Guard in 1987. He attended Brainerd Vocational College and received his degree in Parts and Service Management. Loren worked at Dondelinger Automotive in Brainerd and Pine River Motors. On March 17, 2007 he was united in marriage to Lisa Speed in Baxter, Minnesota. For the past 17 years, Loren was the Parts Manager at Anderson Brothers Construction in Brainerd.

He was a member of the Stearns County Pioneer Club and the Ranger Bassmasters.

Loren enjoyed watching NASCAR racing, restoring of Farmall tractors and vintage snowmobiles, bass fishing, ice fishing, taking fishing excursions with family and friends, deer hunting, and snowmobiling. He also had an extensive oil can collection and enjoyed helping his brother, Kenny, with planting and harvesting on the family farm.

Survivors include his loving wife of 14 years, Lisa Ritter of Merrifield; brothers and sisters, Cherylene “Char” (Art) Westendorf of Melrose, Debra (Harold) Lahr of Sauk Centre, Kenny Ritter of St. Rosa, and Laura (Steve) Boeckermann of Baxter; sister-in-law, Jane (Kent) Brown of Melrose; eight nephews, six nieces, seven great-nephews, and eight greatnieces; and his pets he adored, Molly, Mable, Lucy, Nelle, and Nadia.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents; brother, George J. Ritter on December 11, 1992; and infant twin sisters, Janice and Josepha.

Mark T. Kociemba

M a r k Kociemba, 88, of St. Anna, passed away, August 6, 2021, at CentraCare Health, Melrose from AML (cancer).

Mark was born to Valentine and Mary (Dobis) Kociemba, April 23, 1933.

He married Rose Marie Czech on October 20, 1952, in Holdingford, and together they operated a dairy farm until 1991. Mark worked at Franklin Manufacturing, did construction work, repaired small engines and tractor tires, and was a ‘Jack of All Trades.’

Mark was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, served on the Holdingford Township Board for 46 years, was a member of St. Anna Sportsman’s Club, as well as loved bingo calling at the church bazaar. He was also an avid all-season fisherman.

Funeral Services will be held at the

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna, on Friday, August 13th, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford, Thursday, August 12, from 4:00-8:00 PM, as well as Friday, from 10:00-11:00 AM at the church.

The Upsala/Swanville posts 313/350 Junior Legion League earned Division II State Runner-up. at the state tournament held in Montevideo August 6-8. USA faced off against the hosting team Montevideo Friday for the quarter final. USA took a 6-4 win.

On Saturday the Patriots met Caledonia in the semifinal game. The game stayed at a 2-2 dead lock tie through the 7th inning and sent the game into extra innings. The Patriots were able to capitalize with a 5-2 win scoring 3 runs in the top of the 9th and holding Caledonia to three outs in the bottom and clinching a spot in the championship game.

On Championship Sunday USA played Starbuck. The Patriots took a 4-2 loss in a great match up earning the State Runner-up trophy and medals. USA also was voted by the Legion Tournament the Sportsmanship Award. The Patriots also won the trophy for their conference. Dear Motor Medics, I used the remote start on my 2004 Chevy Silverado to start the AC the other morning and came out to find my interior filled with smoke. I did not see smoke coming out of any area, so I aired it out and drove to work. I have checked all the electrical functions and the only thing I find that does not work is the interior air conditioning blower fan high speed. Could this be what was smoking?

- Carry in Battle Creek, Michigan Dear Carry, The interior HVAC blower fan system could have been the source of the smoke. Blower resistor failures are common as vehicles age.

The blower windings break down over time and the resistance on the circuit increases, this extra resistance causes the resistor to run much hotter than it should. Eventually the resistor can fail and sometimes it will let off smoke. In addition to the resistor failing some vehicles have issues with the wires that attach to the resistor and the connector plug melting. In the case of the Silverado, it is a common issue and some of them were subject to a recall so check with your local dealership for more information. Most important of all to remember is to stop driving a vehicle when you see or smell smoke. Fire spreads quickly in a vehicle and you can be overcome by the fumes of the many materials used in its construction.

The thermostat is responsible for keeping the engine temperature at a steady level so that you have proper heat available for the interior and proper operating temperature for the engine to operate efficiently. When a thermostat does not allow the engine to warm to a certain level on OBDII ve-

hicles the computer responds by turning on the check engine light. Another effect of low temps is a decrease in fuel mileage due to continued fuel mixture enrichment. In the past, our vehicles used carburetors with chokes on them to enrich the fuel mixture for proper running until the engine was warm. Around the early eighties this changed to electronic fuel injection and is now controlled by the engine computer. If the thermostat does not regulate the engine temperature properly the computer may continue to enrich the fuel mixture causing the vehicle to have poor mileage. Thermostats should be serviced when the coolant is flushed or when they fail to operate as designed.

Robert E. “Smitty” Smith

Robert E. “Smitty” Smith, age 74, of Avon, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, on Friday, August 6, 2021.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating his life will be 11 a.m.

Saturday, August 14 at the Church of St. Benedict in Avon with Rev. Edward Vebelun officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Benedict’s Cemetery in Avon.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 13 and one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.

Robert Ervin Smith was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on May 13, 1947 to Jerome and Marie (Bohmer) Smith. Robert graduated from Technical High School in St. Cloud in 1966. In 1971, Robert married Mary Rose Stalberger at the Church of St. Benedict. They welcomed three children into their lives and had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Robert worked at Lumber One in Avon for a few years and then drove ready mix truck for Blattner’s in Avon since April of 1974 until they sold to Granite City Ready Mix, where he continued to work until being acquired by Knife River Concrete. Before his health began to decline, he was still waking up before the sun came up and working out of the Richmond plant. He loved his job and cherished the many friendships made throughout 47 years.

Robert was hardworking, determined and could always figure out a solution to any problem, even though the solution was sometimes accompanied by a few “choice words”! He loved fishing, his annual deer hunting trip, playing cards and “shooting the breeze." He was a simple man who didn’t dwell on the past but instead was always grateful for the present. He never asked for help with anything but was always first to lend a helping hand.

Robert is survived by wife Mary; children, Nicole Smith and Roberta (Michael) Ringstad; sonin-law, Erik Groth; six grandchildren, Cole, Haley, Carsten, Jenna, Elayna, and Alyse; many nieces and nephews; siblings, Margaret Budde, Joyce (Ron) Klein, Jerome Jr. (Gloria) Smith, Nick (Shirley) Smith, Jane (Vern) Schreifels, Rebecca (Charles) Arnold, and Mike Smith.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Kay Knoblach. He has also been reunited in heaven with his beloved daughter, Michelle.

Robert was loved by many and will be missed dearly. He will be remembered for his heart of gold, his eagerness to help others, and his dedication to his family and friends.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Janice Brown

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie for Janice Brown, age 79 who passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

The Rev. Omar Guanchez officiated.

Burial will be on a later date at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Janice Wolbeck was born May 23, 1942, to Aloysius and Juletta (Roering) Wolbeck in Little Sauk, MN and graduated from Villard High School in 1960. She married Ronald Brown on February 28, 1962. They were married for 59 years. The couple lived in Blaine, MN. Janice loved children. She was blessed with three Tami, James and Lisa and was able to touch the lives of many others by doing daycare in their home in Blaine. Since retirement 21 years ago, Janice and Ron have lived in rural Long Prairie.

Janice was a very giving person who was always doing something for others. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting, baking and canning produce from her garden. More than anything though, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Survived by her husband Ron; her children, Tami Baxton of Champlin, James (Judy) Brown of Inver Grove Heights and Lisa (Gary) Bennewitz of Champlin; siblings Joanne (Brent) Christianson of Pocatello, ID, Shirley (Kenny) Toenyan of Long Prairie, Jerry (Rosie) Wolbeck of Long Prairie, Sharon Warren of Powell, WY and Karon (Shane) Sanchez of Naples, FL; grandchildren Tiffany, Brianna, Travis, Alex, Katlynn, Haillie and seven great-grandchildren.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents; son-in law, Terry Baxton; brother Eugene Wolbeck; sister-in-law, Sharen Wolbeck and brother-in-law Randy Warren.
