beverages, and dessert. But those weren’t options for a place that served so much breakfast. I was going to have to be more creative.

“The impressive fresh-squeezed orange juice maker we had … gave me an idea. I had just learned about the “Yes or Yes” theory at a sales seminar. I put a big display of oranges outside the entrance to the restaurant, and while guests were lined up to get in, I had a waitress ask each customer if they would like coffee or juice.

Little room for a “no” in that question.

“As it happened, most people said, ‘Both.’ Pretty soon, the coffee or juice proposition became standard operating practice at all Hyatt coffee shops – along with the welcoming display of fresh oranges.

Never ask a person a Yes or No question when it could be Yes or Yes instead.”

My good friend Brandon Steiner, founder and owner of one of the largest memorabilia dealers in the country, Steiner Sports, has another good suggestion. And I might add, one that I’ve used quite often.

Say you’re having a tough time getting a meeting with someone – a potential client, investor or mentor. You try everything: persistent calls, emails, tweets, carrier pigeon. But nothing works.

This happened to Brandon a couple years ago when he was trying to get a meeting with a bigwig at a bank in Midtown Manhattan. He figured since his target was a New Yorker, he might be a Yankees fan, so he called Mr. Big’s assistant. Before

she could pass him to voicemail for the umpteenth time, Brandon learned he was a huge admirer of Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera. With that news, Brandon saw the light. He immediately sent Mr. Big an empty baseball case with a note attached.

It read: “I heard you love Mariano Rivera. Here’s a case for a Mariano-signed baseball. When you and I meet within the next two weeks, I’ll bring you the ball.”

Wouldn’t you know it? Mr. Big called Brandon that day, and they met the next week.

A florist celebrating its hundredth year in business explained its success as staying in touch with customers. The owner “has one employee responsible for sending out reminders of who-sent-what-to-whom last year at a particular time, and many repeat orders are generated by this simple call.”

I am inspired by Elbert Hubbard, a very successful soap salesperson who retired in 1894 at age 35. He lived by this credo: “I believe in myself. I believe in the goods I sell. I believe in the firm for whom I work. I believe in my colleagues and helpers. I believe in American business methods. I believe in producers, creators, manufacturers, distributors, and in all industrial workers of the world who have a job and hold it down. I believe that truth is an asset. I believe in good cheer and good health, and I recognize the fact that the first requisite in success is not to achieve the dollar or to confer a benefit, but that Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Chickens

The farms in my youth usually had chickens.

They laid eggs, were a source of meat for Sunday Dinner (at noon), and were able to find a lot of their own feed in the summer months.

We originally had about 300 chickens on our farm. The sale of the eggs gave the ladies a little spending money for sewing materials and sometimes a little “grocery money.” As the years went by, some economic studying was done regarding the flock. It was found that egg production wasn’t very profitable. Although the oats, corn and alfalfa came from our own farm, we needed to buy soybean meal, some calcium and salt to put into the feed. There was also a need to buy poultry grit and oyster shells. When a year was completed, the value of the egg production was about $2500.00. When considering that our actual feed cost was over ½ of the egg production value, it didn’t become very attractive. One also must consider that the water had to be carried, the feed had to be carried, the manure was carried in wash tubs out the door to the manure spreader and the eggs needed to be picked and washed by hand.

Lots of work, plus sometimes when one reached into the nest to pick the egg, the hen would peck one’s hand, making the blood flow.

My Uncle when getting pecked while picking the eggs, would cuss at the chicken in German and grab the hen by the neck and throw her out of the nest. It was kindof fun to watch the hen take a couple of rolls on the floor, get on her feet, fluff her feathers and in chicken language say, “what

just happened to me?”

In later years we began raising Indian River chickens for our own personal meat needs. They weighed about 7 pounds at maturity.

A couple of years later, a couple of Bantams were given to my mother as a gift.

They were quite self sufficient, cleaning up the shell corn under the corn crib, having a picnic eating the earthworms after the rain and sometimes finding a night crawler, which started a game of “you have a really big worm and I’m going to chase you ‘till I get it.’ They were quite prolific breeders and if we had a dozen Bantam hens and two roosters in the spring, there would likely be 150 Bantams around the farm in the fall. It’s hard to eat 125 Bantams.

After a couple of years several Indian River chickens were kept over winter to lay a few eggs. That worked well, but in the spring the Bantam roosters found those big hens to be attractive and soon we had 5 pound Bantams in the farmyard. They were especially attractive, with maltycolored feathers of many designs. Since these offspring were large and we couldn’t eat more chicken, we than were forced to spend time finding nests to rob before they became chicks.

Chickens were great to have around the farm, even though mother would sometimes have to take the broom and chase them out of the flower bed or chase them off of the porch to avoid having to clean their poo off of the steps. They also really liked to get strawberries, tomatoes, bugs and snakes from the garden. The sound of their crowing just seemed to come into your mind when you thought about the old farm place.

Obituaries Donna M. Schneider

Donna M. Schneider, age 85 of Melrose, formerly of Hopkins, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at the Cherrywood Assisted Living in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m.

Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A family inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose at a later date.

Donna Mae Schneider was born February 14, 1932 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Mathilda (Stengel) Schneider. After graduating from Melrose High School in 1951, Donna moved to Minneapolis and worked as a secretary at United Artists. She soon began her career as a radio programmer at station WDGY and

moved to New York City in 1963 to continue that career. After more than 20 years in New York City, Donna moved back to Minnesota and completed her career at WLTE Lite FM. Donna worked with numerous sales people and on-air personalities, and she managed to keep them all happy with her dedication, eye for detail, and good-natured personality. She later moved back to Melrose to be closer with family.

Donna enjoyed needlework and crafts, reading, and spending time with her family.

She had a great eye for nice things and enjoyed picking out just the right gift for family.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Michael (Debbie) Schaefer of Coppell, Texas, Margo (Ron) Shebeck of Underwood, Jeanne Schaefer of Burnsville, Mary (Tim) Quick of St. Cloud, and Dan (Maryanna) Schaefer of Falcon Heights; and 13 great-nieces and nephews.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mathilda Schneider; brother and sisters, Luverne, Lorraine, and Margaret; and nephews, Mark and Thomas Schaefer.

Jerome James “Jerry” Humphreys Sr. Jerome James “Jerry” Humphreys Sr., age 83 of Grey Eagle, formerly of North St. Paul.

Preceded in death by parents, Alicia & Jerome Humphreys; sisters, Ann, Mary, Dolly and Linda.

Survived by his wife of 64 years Dolores; children, Linda (Phil), Jerry, Scott; brothers, Tony (Colleen), Mike (Diane); sister Kathleen Maloney; 11

grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; very special friends, Nancy and Dwight Tschida.

Jerry served in the Navy where he met lifelong friends Don & Deane Nelson. He enjoyed winters in Arizona, cooking family favorites like dumplings and boiled dinners, baking, gardening, canning and sharing the bounty with his many good friends in Grey Eagle. He was a regular at the men’s morning coffee group at the hardware store. Like his dad before him, he loved making things in his workshop.

Memorial Gathering will be held Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 10:00 AM12:00 PM at Sandberg Funeral Home, North St. Paul. Interment will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Bayport.

Genevieve M. “Jenny” Wenning Genevieve M. “Jenny” Wenning, age 100 of Albany, died Sunday, August 6, 2017 at her home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 11 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Seven Dolors Gathering Area in Albany. Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m.

Genevieve Marie Zenzen was born February 6, 1917 in Albany, Minnesota to Anton and Julia (Silbernick) Zenzen. On May 7, 1935 she was united in marriage to Alois Wenning at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Jenny farmed with her husband on the farm north of Albany. She would help drive tractor and do other farm work, but mostly she took care of her family.

In 1979, the couple retired and moved into Albany. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Jenny was an excellent seamstress and made beautiful quilts. She also enjoyed cooking and in her younger years, she loved to dance.

Linda A. Berens

Linda A. Berens, age 64 of Greenwald, formerly of Grey Eagle, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 5, 2017.

She courageously fought cancer for nearly five years, sharing her strength as well as the love and joy of Christ with all surrounding her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 11 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Grey Eagle following the lunch.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Greenwald. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Linda Alice Berscheit was born in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota on February 12, 1953 to Ernest and Virginia (Honaker) Berscheit. On November 4, 1972, she was united in marriage to Mark Berens

at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Ward Springs. Linda enjoyed singing in the Grey Eagle Community Choir for many years.

She also enjoyed cooking, sewing, playing softball, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren and always helping others.

She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald and a former member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Mark Berens of Greenwald; three children, Jason (Debbi) Berens, Jenine (Donovan) Rumreich, and Jeremy Berens; nine grandchildren, Sierra, Jesse, Elizabeth, Sheridan, Luke, Julia, Sydney, Henry, and Samantha; brothers and sisters, Mickey Doucette, Rita (Ken) Ritter, Jerry (Fely) Berscheit, Larry (Kathy) Berscheit, Ari (TJ) Trollen, Paul (Lynne) Berscheit, Lisa (Dave) Rahn, Ronald Berscheit; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Virginia Berscheit; and sister, Emily Arvig.

Her faith in God had been the center point of her life. She brought many people to Christ and deepened the faith of countless others.

Loren Gene Reinbold F u n e r a l Services were held at 11 am, We d n e s d a y, August 9, 2017 at Peace United Church, Long Prairie for Loren G. Reinbold, age 78, of Long Prairie, who passed away on Saturday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Rev. Gary Taylor officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Loren Gene Reinbold was born July 24, 1939 in Long Prairie, Minnesota, to Harry and Selma (Voight) Reinbold. Loren lived at home with his parents until the age of 16. At that time, he moved to Faribault, Minnesota.

He lived and worked there for seven years.

In 1962, Loren relocated to Brainerd, Minnesota. He lived and worked there for 26 years wanting to be closer to his family.

Loren moved to Browerville, Minnesota in October of 1988. Loren worked at the Todd County Recycling.

Loren was a member of Peace United Church. He enjoyed going for long walks and paging through books.

Loren is survived by his cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Floyd T. “Tom” Ross

Memorial s e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Floyd T. “Tom” Ross, 68, of Avon was held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Avon Community Church in Avon.

Tom passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital with family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Inurnment with honors was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls.

Tom was born on September 28, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Floyd J. and Edwina (Bromenschenkel) Ross. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1966 and proudly entered the US Navy.

He served with the Naval Air Division based in Barbers Point, Hawaii. During his time with the Navy, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device and the National Defense Service Medal. Tom returned to the St. Cloud area and obtained his Licensed Practical Nursing Degree

from St. Cloud Vo-Tech. He was employed at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center as both a nurse as well as in maintenance, retiring after 40 plus years of service. Tom married Karyl Weberg on October 23, 1982 in St. Cloud. He was a life member of the St. Cloud Eastside VFW #4847 and a member of the Minnesota Street Rod Association.

Tom had a memorable sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. His love of fun, led him to honoring fellow employees at the VA with unforgettable skits. Tom had a passion for cars; he owned and restored many classic cars.

His greatest enjoyment was his family; he treasured spending time with his wife, son, daughter-in-law and most especially his grandchildren.

Tom is survived by his wife, Karyl; son, Zach (Erin) Weberg of Brainerd; grandchildren, Haylee, Hannah, Gracie, Devon, Caleb, and Austin; mother, Eddie; brothers and sisters, Diane (Bill) Weyer, Jan (Fred) Rudolph, Bob (Sharon), Paul, Shelly (Phil) Lindgren, Doug (Sue); sister-in-law, Joan Schwinghammer; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd; and brother, Steve.

Raymond H. Hieserich Raymond H. Hieserich, age 85 of Sauk Centre and longtime G r e e n w a l d resident died Friday, August 4, 2017 at Saint Cloud Hospital in Saint Cloud, Minnesota with his family at his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, August 9th at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Sudhansu Kumar and Deacon Lawrence Kaas presiding. Interment was in Saint Paul’s Catholic Cemetery.

Raymond Henry Hieserich was born January 18, 1932, the son of Joseph and Ottilia (Imdieke) Hieserich in Spring Hill Township, Minnesota. He attended a one room schoolhouse through his 8th grade education. On September 7, 1954, Ray was united in marriage to Louise Elizabeth Schieffer in Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Shortly after their marriage, Raymond and Louise moved to the Hieserich family farm where he grew up. Ray farmed the land and had a herd of dairy cows. Upon retirement in 1997, they moved from the farm to their home in Sauk Centre. While living on the farm, Ray and Louise attended Saint Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

He especially enjoyed participating in Barley Day at Saint Andrew’s Parish each year. His family remembers the radio was on day and night in the barn where Ray enjoyed listening to WCCO AM and KASM stations

throughout the day and evening. Ray was an avid Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins fan and could always be found watching their games from his living room chair. Reading – especially any historical novel, bird watching, playing cards, and “participating” in the game show, Jeopardy became some of his favorite pastimes in his later years.

Raymond was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and was a member of the Bishop Busch Council of the Knights of Columbus in Sauk Centre.

Survivors include his beloved wife of nearly 63 years, Louise; his daughters, Linda (Roger) Vossen of Inver Grove Heights, Susan Kobe of Hopkins, and Nancy (Philip) Ayu of Fridley; twin sons, Daniel (Lori) Hieserich of Breckenridge and Donald Hieserich of Sauk Centre; ten grandchildren, Tim Vossen, Tom Vossen, Timin Ayu, Taver Ayu, Ben Hieserich, Matt Hieserich, Rachel Hieserich, John Hieserich, David Hieserich, and Adam Hieserich; great grandchildren, Calvin Ayu, Teddy Ayu, Avery Ayu, and Isla Ayu; sister, Mary Ann (Richard) Orth; and brother-in-law, Bert Waldorf.

Raymond was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dick Kobe in 2012; parents, Joseph and Ottilia Hieserich; sisters, Eileen Hieserich in infancy and Lucille Waldorf.

D o r o t h y Moorman, 88, of Melrose, passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017, at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

A funeral service and celebration of her life was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Doug Liebsch concelebrating. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the service.

Dorothy Ella Kemper was born, along with twin sister, Dolores, in Melrose, on June 28, 1929, the daughters of Bernadine and Joseph Kemper. She married Jerome “Romie” Moorman on July 6, 1954, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They lived in Melrose all of their married life.

Dorothy was a homemaker, raising their five children, and was a babysitter for a few families. She enjoyed baking, especially cookies, buns and bread and later years visits from her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Dorothy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Women.

She is survived by her children,

Our Psalmist reminds us that God “speaks peace to His people and to His saints.” His peace is what brings us “wholeness and completeness” and unites us with Him. It dissolves the fear we have of Him and removes the guilt that we carry within us from being disobedient to Him. So our Psalmist wisely adds, “but let them not return to their folly” - or perhaps a more appropriate translation of the word “folly” is “stupidity.” What might this mean?

Often we become “presumptuous” and assume that we deserve God’s blessings. We take an inventory of our lives and things appear to be “just about as wonderful as wonderful can be.” We have no “fear” of God and take His goodness for granted. “What stupidity!” says the Psalmist. “Be careful of falling into Your past sinful ways.”

Eugene A. Meyer, age 82 of Avon, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 7, 2017, at the Church of St. Benedict in Avon.

Burial was on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at Calvary Cemetery in Tracy.

Eugene Aloysisus Meyer was born on April 16, 1935, to parents Edward and Lena (Conrad) Meyer in Maryville, MO. He served his country honorably as a soldier in the United States Air Force, until his discharge in 1958. After his release from duty, he graduated from Mankato Area Vocational School as an electronic technician. He married the love of his life, Norma Ellen McCoy, on October 4, 1955, in Tracy, MN, with whom he raised eight children. Eugene was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 10 and worked with sheet metal in commercial construction for many years. He walked strongly in his faith and was a member of Church of St. Benedict (Avon) and St. Mary’s Church (Tracy). He enjoyed spending time

church lawn, the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan has been undergoing restoration of its historic structure.

To help with this endeavor, the Grey Eagle Community Choir has graciously offered to present the concert on August 14th at 7 p.m. Attendees at the event will also have the opportunity to participate in an old fashioned “hymn sing” as part of the program. Refreshments will be provided after the concert in the Parish Hall and on the church lawn, weather permitting.

For those not familiar with the Lessons and Carols event of former years will enjoy this unique venue. The church is notable for the “Good Shepherd” stained glass window, which came by ox cart from St. Cloud and installed in the rear of the sanctuary wall. Due to the restoration of the wall, the window has been reinstalled in the interior wall of the sanctuary to await placement in the outside wall after the restoration has been completed in 2018.

It would cost about $27,000. I have $80,000 in savings, but the company doing the installation will finance it all for just one percent interest. It’s almost like free money. My electric bills average around $310 a month, and I thought this would be a good way to save money in the long run.

What do you think?

-Michael Dear Michael, If you have to finance the project, my answer is no. My guess is the break-even analysis you’re trying to give me is the sales pitch your solar panel company gave you. That’s how they sell solar panels, but it doesn’t justify going into debt.

You told me you have around $80,000 in savings right now. Why not just write a check? Let me ask you a question. What if you could borrow $10 million at one percent interest and put it in the stock market? Would you do that? Of course, not. It would be way too risky, right? Basically, we’re talking about the same kind of thing. I made you feel the risk by scaling things up in my scenario.

You’re not feeling the risk right now because we’re talking about $27,000 instead of millions.

This move wouldn’t bankrupt you, but wealthy people don’t do the kind of thing

you’re talking about. Either pull the money out of your savings account and buy the panels, or don’t buy them at all!

-Dave Dear Dave, I make $48,000 a year, and I have $35,000 in credit card debt. I owe $25,000 on my home, and I was thinking about taking out a loan against my house to pay off the credit cards. Is this a good idea?

-Mike Dear Mike, I would never advise anything like this, unless it’s to avoid bankruptcy. Here’s the problem with that kind of plan. Most people who do that kind of thing don’t change their financial habits. In fact, they end up with a new mortgage and new credit card debt somewhere down the line.

You need to start building a track record of paying off debt. Cut up the credit cards, slash your spending, and start living on a tight, written, monthly budget. Prove to yourself that you’re not going to take out a mortgage and turn around and run up a bunch of new credit cards.

I want to see you not take on any new debt and reduce that $35,000 credit card bill dramatically over the next six months. If you can knock out half of it in a year, you can take care of the other half in another year or less.

Then, you wouldn’t need a second mortgage!

Upsala Heritage Days to offer Disc Golf As part of Upsala Heritage Days the public is invited to experience and learn “everything you want to know about disc golf” Sunday, August 13th at 1:30 p.m. at the Borgstrom Parks Disc Golf Grand Opening Event in Upsala. Two guest speakers, both from the St. Cloud area, will be drawing from near life long experiences of playing Disc Golf to help start up your, and your childrens, beginning first throws... or help you polish your professional drive to each of the metal baskets or ‘holes’.

Speaking will be Borgstrom Parks Course designer Tim Mackey. Tim designed 55 courses in Minnesota, and 2 in North Dakota. Tim is an 8 time Minnesota state overall Disc Golf champion. He is a charter member of the MFA (Minnesota Frisbee Association) Hall of Fame and WSU Ultimate Frisbee Hall of Fame. Tim designed this nine hole course that can be played as a 18 hole course in Upsala Historical Society’s Borgstrom Park woods. Tim will explain the game of disc golf, answer questions about leagues, tournaments, rules, regulations, and guide people through this beautiful wooded, technical course for practice rounds of disc golf.

The main reason for this day’s program is to familiarize people with disc golf. Disc golf is a great way to get exercise and can be practiced independently or played in groups.

Unlike normal expensive ball golf, disc golf is free to play at many different locations across the country. At Borgstrom Park, if you don’t feel like throwing discs you may just want to enjoy strolling the nature trails!

Bring your own discs and frisbees to practice on the course. Be sure to label your name on them. The program kicks off at 1:30 p.m. with the Swanville Boy Scout Troop 33 Flag raising ceremony and welcome from the Upsala Area Historical Society. We will learn that this Disc Golf course is Eric Staricka’s Eagle Scout project that has involved many community members.

Troop 33 will be on hand to help retrieve lost or out of reach discs, and they will also be selling hot dogs, pop and water as a fundraiser. All ages are welcome to this free event. Children under the age of 13 should be accompanied by an adult guardian. Some chairs will be set out for the program, but please bring your own. Swanville City July 5, 2017 Public hearing called to order 6:45 p.m. with the following council members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Deb Wood. Absent: Jim Molitor. Also present: Swanville School Superintendent Gene Harthan.

The purpose of the public hearing is to hear public input on vacating the alley behind 320 Rhoda Avenue (west of Lots 1,2, and 3 of Block 3 and east of Lot 13, Block 3 of the McRae’s addition), Superintendent Harthan stated that the school did not have a problem with the property owner receiving this alley land. No other land owners were present to comment. The public hearing was then closed.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Deb Wood. Also present: Jon Archer, Mark Hallen, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, June 6, 2017 were reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes as printed.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

City Clerk/Treasurer Julie Hollermann told the council that she had wired $68,300.00 to a bank in Georgia for street repair on Monday, July 3. Hollermann thought she had gotten an email from Mayor Lange’s mobile which stated to wire the money for street repair. Hollermann replied to the email and asked if the Mayor wanted this done yet as Hollermann had been on vacation.

The reply said yes. Hollermann went to the bank and wired the money. When Hollermann sent the confirmation to the Mayor’s email, Lange replied back she did not know anything about the wire. Both banks are now working on recovering the money. The League of MN Cities Insurance Company and the Morrison County Sherriff’s Office have been notified of this fraud.

Mayor Lange stated that any electronic funds transferred over $1,500.00 must be approved before being completed. Council will revisit funds policies at the next council meeting.

Jon Archer, from Schlenner Wenner & Co, was present to go over the yearly audit. Jon explained the audit in detail and answered questions from council members. Tony Maciej made a

Mayor Lange read a letter from Mark Proctor who is asking if the curb will be replace in front of his property as he is experiencing water in his basement. Council feels the slope of the road is adequate and no curb will be replaced at this time.

The walking trail to the south of Swanville is owned in part by Joe and Shirley Gessell. Mayor Lange stated that the Gessell’s would quit claim their part to the city. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have the city attorney draw up a quit claims deed for the Gessell’s part of the walking trail. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented council with the Initiative Contribution Agreement for 2018. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to contribute to the Initiative Foundation $700.00 in 2018.

Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2017.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to council Resolution #17-0705 vacating alley located to the west of Lots 1, 2, and 3, Block 3 and to the east of Lot 13, Block 3 McRae’s Addition. Deb Wood made a motion to accept Resolution #17-0705 vacating alley. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The Clerk will have the document recorded.

The following land use permits were approved from the P & Z committee. Tim & Linda Dally would like to build a four-plex apartment building in the new North Berkey Avenue Addition.

Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the land use permit for the four-plex. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. Josh Larum wants to build a30’x40’ garage & 20’x24’cement slab. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the land use permit when Larum has his two lots combined. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor of the two land use permits.

Manage Your Time, Manage Your Life - By John Young Time management is something we all struggle with. You might struggle with this in your business, or maybe in your personal life especially on those days when you don’t seem to get anything done. The following tips are based off some lessons shared by business consultant Brian Tracy many years ago that still ring true today.

These tips can help your organizational skills and help your productivity. Wouldn’t it be great to get more done each day?

Time Management Tip 1: Prepare In Advance First, prepare your work list for the following day the evening or night before.

The best exercise is for you to plan your entire next day as the last thing you do before shutting down for the day. When you plan your day the night before, your subconscious then goes to work on your plans and goals while you are doing other things or asleep. Think of the number of times you have woken up in the morning with a great idea for a new project or activity. That is your subconscious working for you!

One major benefit of preparing your daily list the night before is that you will sleep more soundly. You won’t forget about an important task and sit up all night worrying about possibly forgetting something important you need to do the next day!

Once you have written down everything you have to do on your list, it takes a ton of stress off your subconscious. This helps you become more productive the next work day.

Time Management Tip 2: Schedule Your Time Scheduling your time reduces stress, builds energy and keeps you focused.

When you schedule your day and time, you feel a greater sense of control which leads to greater productivity. It helps feel like you have control of your life when you can set your schedule and keep to it and knock out tasks throughout the day!

Time Management Tip 3: Start Early This is a very tough one, especially if you have children in the house during those summer months!

In the biographies and autobiographies of successful men and women, almost all of them have one thing in common. They developed great organizational skills and the habit of going to bed at a reasonable hour and rising early.

Many successful people arise at 5:00 A.M. or 5:30 A.M. so that they can have enough time to think and plan for the coming day. As a result, they are always more effective than those who sleep in until the last possible moment.

A few minutes of thought and preparation before you begin any task can save you many hours executing the undertaking. When you get up early and plan your day in advance, you tend to be more calm, clear-headed, and creative throughout the day.

Time Management Tip 4: Organizational Skills As much as 30 percent of working time these days is spent looking for misplaced items around your work space. These are things that are lost because they have not been taken care of properly. Does this sound familiar to you? There are few activities so frustrating as spending your valuable time looking for misplaced tools or items because you didn’t put it back in its place when you used it last.

Time Management Tip 5: Know Your Best Working Hours Each person has a different time of day when they are the most productive and creative. This is referred to by Brian Tracy as your ‘Prime Time.’

Your internal prime time is the time of day, according to your body clock, when you are the most alert and productive. For most people, this is in the morning. For some people, however, it is in the evening.

Occasionally, a writer, an artist, or an entertainer may find that her prime time is in the early hours of the morning It is important that you be aware of your internal prime time so that you can schedule your most important projects accordingly to increase productivity. Your most important work usually requires that

you be at your very best, rested, alert, and creative. What time of the day do you most feel this way?

You must also be aware of external prime time. This is the time when your customers or clients are most readily available.

Each person should give some thought to structuring their day for both their external and internal prime times.

Time Management Tip 6: Use The Down Time There are times when you are waiting that can be utilized for certain tasks.

Times of travel or waiting for appointments might be a perfect time to knock off a few smaller tasks and help you get ahead on your daily scheduled actions. Studies have found that those that work while flying uninterrupted for an hour can achieve the equivalent of 3 hours of work in the office.

July 26, 2017: At 16:54 a vehicle traveling west on County Road 13, Burtrum left the roadway and struck a mailbox. The vehicle was described as a gray Chevy pickup with a topper. The vehicle then continued in County Road 13 without stopping at the crash scene.

The vehicle may have sustained some front end damage. Anyone with information on this vehicle is asked to contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

July 28, 2017: At 07:11 Caroline Schwieters, 17, of Melrose was driving east on County Road 2 near Big Birch lake when she hit a deer with 2015 Buick Enclave. The vehicle had damage to the front driver side and was towed. Schwieters was not injured in the accident.

July 31, 2017: At 09:50 Rafal Zajac owner of the Linwood Resort on Lake Osakis reported that a 14 foot trailer had been stolen sometime during the evening of 7-31-2017.

The trailer was recovered in Morrison County near Royalton the same evening. A maroon in color SUV was seen in the area at the time the trailer was found. Anyone with information on the theft can call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

August 3, 2017: At 05:16 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a theft of a motor vehicle from Morrison Line Rd. Trevor Loxterkamp, 22 of Swanville, was later arrested by Morrison County Sheriff’s Office and brought to the Todd County Detention Center.

August 9, 2017: At 11:05 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to Grey Eagle Gas and Groceries for a vehicle that collided with the building. Shyanne Johnson, 19 of Long Prairie, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu when she entered the parking lot and did not slow down enough. No injuries occurred.
