Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees had a fierce pride about always doing his best. The Yankees were on the road for a doubleheader against the St. Louis Browns.

The day was not only boiling hot, the Browns were last place in the league. Despite this, DiMaggio made an off-hand comment that he was looking forward to playing that day.

“In this heat!” said an amazed sportswriter. “How can you enjoy playing a doubleheader in stifling weather like this?”

Glancing toward the grandstand, DiMaggio said, “Maybe somebody out there has never seen me play before.”

er. He was serious and genuine when he made those comments. Unfortunately I know many people mistake pride for selfishness. When I looked up pride in a thesaurus, I was shocked at the suggestions – arrogance, conceit, smugness, self-importance, egotism, vanity, immodesty, superiority and on and on.

Maybe there isn’t a good synonym.

But pride to me is being self-confident, but not egotistical. Pride is having a positive, can-do attitude because you will settle for nothing less than your level best.

I want people like Joe DiMaggio who are proud of the work they perform.

Here are ways to build the pride that I look for: • Build your reputation. Whatever you do for a living, your signature is on it. You can’t buy a reputation for doing good work, you must earn it. Reputation is one of the few assets that your competition cannot undersell or destroy.

• Play your role. Everyone has a specific job to do, no matter how small it might seem to you. Do it to the best of your ability. Be a good team player. The boat won’t go if we all don’t row.

• Be confident, but not cocky.

There’s nothing wrong with being proud of your accomplishments, but you don’t have to tell the world. Keep your ego in check. A person who has the right to boast doesn’t have to. Self-esteem is a must for a prideful person.

• Stay positive. Don’t let others bring you down, which is why I don’t hang around with negative people. Be friendly to everyone, including the people you dislike. As Michael Corleone said in “The Godfather,” “Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer.”

• Build trust. The most important five-letter word in business is TRUST. Trust is central to doing business with anyone. Josh and Trista Klaphake are proud to announce the birth of their son, Mathew David Klaphake, born July 26, 2013, at the Centra-Care Health-Melrose.

Mathew weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches in length.

As a professional photographer, Julie took a lot of pride in her work, and brought samples everywhere she went in hopes of getting new business. One evening she was at a dinner party, and her host asked to see her portfolio. She showed him over a dozen pictures, and the host was impressed.

“These are some really nice shots,” he told her. “You must have a great camera.”

Julie was annoyed at the suggestion that it was her camera – not her talent – that allowed her to take great pictures.

But she said nothing until the meal was over.

“That dinner was excellent,” she said.

Clarence R. “Dick” Anderson, Jr.

Obituaries Isabel M. Bogard

Isabel M. Bogard, age 96 of Albany, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, August 2 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany with Rev. Bradley Pearson officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Farming Township.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday morning at the church in Albany.

Isabel Margaret Lemke was born January 27, 1917 in Farming Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Paul and Tillie (Scheid) Lemke. On November 23, 1940 she was united in marriage to Albert Bogard at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming Township. Isabel was a homemaker who loved being at home to take care of her family. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

in Albany. Isabel enjoyed watching wrestling and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include her children, Jeanette “Jan” Grunert of St. Cloud, Dennis Bogard of Albany, Terry Bogard of Albany, Jay (Julie) Bogard of Albany, and Kim (Harvey) Bogard-Imdieke of Albany; grandchildren, Konnie Hill of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Pam Grunert of Bethesda, Maryland, April Bogard of St. Paul, Leah Kellen of Long Prairie, Jordan Bogard of Albany, and Gracie Bogard of Albany; great-grandchildren, Erik Hill of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Kristin Hill of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Kacie Hill of Los Angeles, California, and Brady Guttropf of Westminster, Colorado; one great-great-granddaughter; sisters, Alice Hamann of Cold Spring and Lorraine Sager of Cold Spring; and sisters-in-law, Helen Lemke of Sauk Rapids and Eleanor Lemke of Albany.

Isabel was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bogard on February 17, 1964; parents; brothers, Ervin Lemke and Norman Lemke; sister, Hazel Schulz; and son-in-law, Ron Grunert.

National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at the Lion’s Park in Grey Eagle at 7:00 p.m.

A concert in the park will kick off the evening with the Community Choir singing at 7:00 p.m.

Clarence R. “Dick” Anderson, Jr., age 85, of Melrose, died peacefully on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Inurnment followed in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Clarence Richard Anderson, Jr. was born September 14, 1927 in Ferndale, Washington to Clarence, Sr. and Alice (Bakkom) Anderson. He attended school in Melrose, joined the army and served in the occupational forces in Japan.

He graduated from St. Cloud State as a social studies and art teacher and enjoyed coaching basketball and track at Monticello High School. He worked in Greenland for the U.S. Military and returned to Melrose to marry the love of

his life, LaNita Zinniel. They married on November 8, 1952 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. They lived in California for ten years where he began his career in sales and later returned to Melrose. He was a member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050, American Legion Post 101, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include his children, Cecilia (Pete) Tylutki of Melrose, Pat (Tom) Hollermann of Alexandria, Cindy Weisbrich of Chesapeake, VA, Michael (Doris) Anderson of Chanhassen, John (Lisa) Anderson of Lester Prairie, Jim Anderson of Melrose, and Mary Jane Anderson of St. Cloud; ten grandchildren, Nicholas (Penny) Tylutki, Nathan Tylutki, Matthew and Christine Hollermann, Justin Weisbrich, Elizabeth and Grace Anderson, Amy (Travis) Anderson, Timothy (Anna) Anderson, and Jake Anderson; four greatgrandchildren, Blake and Grant Tylutki, Brody and Clayton Wanous; sisters, Jan (Lawrence) Williams of Melrose, Sharon Staley of Melrose; and sister-in-law Carole Anderson of Melrose.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, LaNita in 2008; his parents; brother, Allan in 1991; grandson, Kyle Weisbrich in 2006.

Serving as urn bearers were Tim Anderson and Nicholas Tylutki.

Viewpoints of the World -By Sheila Ripplinger

Everywhere we turn, there is some sort of intelligent worldly viewpoint facing us. We see it in the media, movies, magazines and music. Mainstream churches are even allowing the sinful viewpoints to creep in as well, encouraging tolerance of such detestable things that are against the Lord. Churches become so afraid to be labeled judgmental and lose attendance, that they join in with the tolerance of the world and become wishy washy in what they believe and teach. That is NOT what Jesus taught.

If we care to know what the Bible says and believe those Words are Godbreathed and Truth, we should not be surprised at what we are seeing in the world in which we live. People of the world have tried so fervently over the years to prove God’s Word as error.

They have never been able to succeed.

If fact many who have set out to prove it wrong, have become strong, devoted Christ- followers in the process! It has never, nor will ever, be found to be incorrect. The world may have theories and viewpoints, but they will never find any areas of the Bible to be false.

Interestingly, great archeologist digs over history have only proved to give more and more accuracy to the events documented in the Holy Bible.

The prince of this world is Satan, ‘John 16:11’. His mission in this world is the same as it was in the beginning even before his damage in the Garden of Eden. He wanted to be God. His pride as a powerful angel got him booted out of Heaven and his goal ever since has been to strive to gain more power on earth. He does not succeed in the long run. His doom is certain- it was finished at the cross when Jesus conquered him once and for all. However, he is still free to roam and devour souls that will allow

him in and believe his lies. He masquerades as an angel of light, but he is the father of lies and the personification of all that is against God. Unfortunately, the world listens to what ‘sounds good’. There are secular teachings of peace, love, and harmony, but on the inner core there is great deception. If we accept the ‘do whatever we please and accept me anyway’ theology, we cannot dare to call ourselves a true follower of Christ. No one would see the need to repent and be saved. Jesus loves all people, in fact He died for the ‘world’ and still reaches out in His Grace to the most sinful ones... but He does not say, “It’s okay to keep living in your sin.” -no- He says with great love, “Go and sin no more!”

Who is the mastermind behind the distorted thinking of the world’s present day accepted viewpoints of perversion and depravity? The same one who was there in the beginning to tempt Adam and Eve, and later to tempt Jesus during His forty days in the desert. The devil knows God, and he also knows what Scripture says and knows that it is for real! He tried to use God’s own words to trick Jesus in to giving up and giving in to him. Three times it is recorded that Satan manipulated Scripture to try to make Jesus fall. Praise God that the enemy’s evil intentions did not succeedand never will!

Sadly though, people of the world are believing in Satan’s delusional tactics because they do not know the Truth and do not seem to care either. The devil has a kingdom as well- it is called the bottomless pit, lake of fire, or hell as most know of it. He is rapidly gaining souls to bring with him at his grand fi-

Most people, if asked, would say that they believe in one God. The Bible says in James 2:19, “You say you believe in one God? Good! Even the demons believe that and shudder!” Saying we believe in God is not enough to save our souls from being manipulated, deceived, and devoured by the devil and burdened with his heavy chains of sin and shame.

It all comes down to Truth or lies.

Upsala athletic meeting set for August 8

The Upsala sports meeting for parents and athletes, has been scheduled for Thursday, August 8. This meeting is for all athletes in grades 7-12 involved in all sports and any season. The meeting will take place at Upsala High School, in the theatre at 7:00 p.m. Parents and athletes are encouraged to attend if they plan on participating in athletics in any season for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Wissmanns and Kingerys together in Concert August 5th

Monday, August 5, the Community Country Church of Holdingford, is proud to announce the joining of two musical families. The Kingery and Wissmann families are coming together to provide a night full of entertainment and musical enjoyment.

The Kingery family has been performing for 8 years round North America. This family of 16 sings primarily gospel bluegrass music while also incorporating fiddle, patriotic, Americana, and a Capella.

The Wissmann family started playing in 1999 with their 13 children, starting in small town events and local venues. They now travel all over North

America sharing the Gospel in churches, schools, Bible camps, fairs, festivals, state and local conventions. You’ll hear the warm sweet sound of the younger children blending harmonies with the deep bass and high sopranos of the mature voices of the older siblings.

The variety in each program is exciting and refreshing. The concert starts at 7:00 p.m. at Community Country Church in Holdingford. There will be a free will offering for the families. Mother of Mercy Campus of Care receives Grant to reduce medications

The Minnesota Department of Human Services has awarded Mother of Mercy Nursing Home a two-year Performance Improvement Project grant to reduce medications and improve quality measures. Mother of Mercy is a member of the Care Ventures Cooperative, a collaborative of 16 rural nursing facilities in Minnesota. Mother of Mercy will work closely with other cooperative members and consultant geriatric pharmacist to develop and implement a specialty program aimed at the reduction of medications and treatments for skilled nursing facility residents. Staff will ensure all

medications are relevant and necessary, and also identify ways to reduce psychopharmacologic drugs, with a focus on antipsychotics.

“Our ultimate goal with this grant is to reduce unnecessary medications by collaborating with our Providers, Physicians, Nurse Practitioner’s and Physician Assistant’s in our community”, comments Debbie Massara, Director of Nursing at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, continues, “by working together as a team of professionals we individualize each resident’s plan of care to meet their needs.”

We walked to my office and paused in front of our “prayer board” which contained pictures of the items we were praying for. Looking at a folding machine he asked, “Think you’ll get it?” I replied, “I know we will. God answers prayer!”

A citizen in town came to the meeting to request a waiver to allow him to have 3 dogs in the household. After some discussion, the request failed due to the lack of a motion Speed limit signs are here.

remove the dead tree on City property. Upon vote motion carried.

Being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Anna Payne and seconded by Ron Strassburg. Motion carried upon vote.

Supervisor updated the board on the sign inventory and replacement of lost signs.

Due to recent heavy rains there was a lot of road damage and trees downed on local roads.

Supervisors discussed blading and repacking gravel on hill at north end of Dunlin Road then spraying with dust control to try to hold in place. Several other roads will need additional blading and maybe additional gravel in spots. Ermine Drive needs rock removed and check culvert rising up. Supervisor got clearance from land owner to add culvert on 341st Ave. Contractor will start ditch mowing right away. Supervisors have started weed inspections and should finish soon.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $168,627.41 before tonight’s bills. Treasurer’s report accepted on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:47 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on July 30, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

150th Commemoration of the Civil War

The American Civil War (18611865) was the most devastating war ever fought on American soil, with 620,000 of 2.4 million soldiers killed, and injuries numbering in the millions. The war was a culmination of years of division between northern and southern states regarding issues of slavery, westward expansion, and state versus federal authority. Following the election of Abraham Lincoln, the southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. Civil War service men from Stearns County and Minnesota served in various regiments including the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment who fought in the Battle of First Bull Run, Antietam, and they played a pivotal role on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg.

On Sunday August 11th, from 1:00 - 4:30 p.m., the Melrose Area Museum will host a Civil War themed event. The event will include: a uniformed Civil War interpreter, Civil War displays, free museum tours, live entertainment by local musicians, and refreshments. Free

9 am - 7 pm: Softball Tournament: at the Rec Building. Food and Beer available.

10:30 am: “The Best Central Mn Small Town” PARADE. Theme Ole and Lena & 130 years of Swedes in Upsala. Parade entries will begin at Gethsemane Lutheran Church with line up at 9:00 AM. There will be prizes for the BEST 3 Theme Floats.

Following the parade, visitors can head to the city park for the city’s “Party in the Park”.

11:30 am: the Borgstrom House will have lunch and tours.

1:00 pm: Presentation by Author Shirley Bergstrom “ Eyes in the Woods” a story of Early Upsala.

1:30 pm: Raffle.

All Day Long: Visitors can enjoy a Car Show, Food Booths, Beer Garden, Cake Wheel, Dunk Tank, Kids Games, Bean Bag Tournament and Big Inflatables and music.

12:30 pm: FFA Kids Pedal Pull.

2:30 pm: - Fire Department Water Fights followed by Kids Water Fights.

7:00 pm: Party at Rec. Building sponsored by UBA. Beer Garden, Concessions.
