Take charge of your attitude A mother was ready for a few minutes of relaxation after a long and demanding day.

However, her young daughter had other plans for her mother’s time.

“Read me a story, Mommy,” the little girl pleaded.

“Give Mommy a few minutes to relax. Then I’ll be happy to read you a story,” the mother replied.

But the little girl was insistent that Mommy read to her now. Hoping to buy a few precious minutes, the mother tore off the back page of the magazine she was reading. It contained a full-page picture of the world. She tore it into several pieces and told her daughter to put the picture back together, and then she would read her a story.

A short time later, the little girl announced the completion of her puzzle project. To her astonishment, the mother found the world picture completely assembled. When she asked her daughter how she managed to do it so quickly, the little girl explained that on the reverse side of the page was the picture of a little girl. “You see, Mommy, when I got the little girl together, the whole world came together.”

Each of us has the responsibility to put our world together. It starts by getting ourselves put together. We can become better parents, friends, spouses, and employers. The first step is adjusting our attitude.

Webster’s Dictionary defines attitude as a “mental position.” Successful companies and employees take the position that change is positive and challenge is good. They accept their environment and look for opportunities.

And opportunities are everywhere.

It just depends on your attitude. Change can be difficult, or it can be exciting. You

get to decide, so make sure your attitude puts you in the winner’s circle.

Winners are positive and believe in themselves. They are committed and don’t easily give up. They take charge of their own attitude. Don’t let it take charge of you.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 books, “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill and Dennis Kimbro: “Our attitudes set the stage for what will occur in our lives – good attitude, good results; fair attitude, fair results; poor attitude, poor results. Each of us shapes his own life; and the shapes of our lives will be and are determined by our attitude.

“Your mental attitude is a two-way gate on the pathway of life. It can be swung one way toward success, or the other way toward failure.”

Success and happiness depend as much on your attitude as on your resources and advantages. To develop the right mindset, keep these precepts front and center: • Control. Ultimately the only control you have in life is over yourself: your thoughts, actions, responses and behaviors. Don’t obsess over what you can’t control. Concentrate on what you can.

• Positivity. Stop yourself when you feel negative thoughts taking over.

Instead, ask what’s the best or worst that

can happen. Then plan your response accordingly. Surround yourself with positive people, and see how quickly your own attitude changes.

• Results. It’s easy to fall into routines and patterns that emphasize the process instead of the outcome. Learn the rules, but apply them with an eye on what you want to achieve.

• Gratitude. You’ll stay positive if you remind yourself of what you already possess. Spend some time every day thinking about your health, your family and friends, and the advantages you have, instead of focusing single-mindedly on what you lack.

• Example. Realize that you are setting an example for those around you.

Attitudes are contagious, and you will be a welcome carrier of this condition!

The good news is that anyone – absolutely anyone – can improve their attitude. As so often happens, we can draw the greatest inspiration for attitude adjustments from those who seem to have the greatest obstacles to overcome.

Obituaries Elmer V. Hammond

Elmer V. Hammond, age 92 of Freeport, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Talahi Care Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Elmer Vernice Hammond was born January 16, 1923 in Caro, Michigan to Ray and Sophia (Seibel) Hammond. Elmer worked on the farm prior to serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. On June 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Lorraine

Beuning at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Flint, Michigan. Elmer worked for General Motors in Flint, Michigan for 30 years and was able to retire at 55 years of age. Elmer and Lorraine then moved to Freeport where they spent the rest of their days until moving to nursing care in September of 2014. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Elmer enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Hammond of St. Cloud; children, Dan (LaVonne) Hammond of Grey Eagle, Judy (David) Harper of St. Cloud, Tom (Doris) Hammond of Albany, and Linda (Gary) Bleck of Brunsville; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Teresa Roerick, Irene Lund, Bernadine (Leo) Ettle, and Mary Jane (Arnold) Blommel.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Letha Clarke.

Serving as casket bearers will be David and Steven Fournier, Matt, Greg, Peter, and Mike Hammond. Cross bearer will be Andrea Bleck and scripture bearer will be Kimberly Fournier.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of William Welle, age 74, of Albany, will be at 11:00 AM on Friday April 10, 2015 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Cletus Connors, OSB will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Bill passed away Saturday morning surrounded by his family at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living. There will be a visitation from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, April 9, 2015 and again after 10:00 AM Friday at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Bill was born at home on December 2, 1940 to Nicholas and Monica (Wiechmann) Welle in Freeport. He was raised with four siblings and, after graduating from Melrose High School, he served with the National Guard in Sauk Centre. On September 4, 1965, he married Jeanette Scheibel at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and together they raised six children. Bill loved being a dairy farmer and had a strong work ethic. He enjoyed being outdoors driving tractors, fishing, and hunting, especially deer

Harvey P. Nienaber

Harvey P. Nienaber, age 73, of Sauk Centre, lived a good life, fought a hard fight, and passed away Sunday, April 5, 2015 at CentraCare Health Hospital after losing his battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 6 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Harvey Paul Nienaber was born July 1, 1941 in Freeport, Minnesota to Theodor and Marie (Borgerding) Nienaber. Harvey met Ruth Lucuik in Canada and married her on July 30, 1977 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

The couple lived in Canada for two years before moving to Sauk Centre in 1979. Harvey served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He worked at Heartland Implement in Sauk Centre as a mechanic and then worked as a custodian at the Holy Family School in Sauk Centre for many years. Upon retirement,

and turkey hunting. Bill was a loyal friend to many and loved socializing. He could be found bowling, playing pool on a local league, participating in other community events, and teaching religious education at Holy Family School. He also liked to watch baseball (especially the MN Twins), visit county and state fairs, and go to auctions.

Woodworking was another pastime and he often built frames for the puzzles he had completed. Bill was a committed family man who supported his children as they grew up, often acting as a sounding board for them. He belonged to Seven Dolors Parish and the Albany Legion Post 482. He was on the Board of Directors for the Freeport Creamery and the Upsala Co-op Creamery.

He was also active with Mid-America Dairyman and the MN Milk Producers.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years Jeanette; children Jim (Karla) Welle, Albany; Alan (Janine) Welle, Albany; Robert (Tamara) Welle, Holdingford; Debra (Steve) Gerardy, Ham Lake; Mike (Mandy) Welle, Freeport; Greg (Lynn) Welle, Avon; siblings Barb (Tony) Welle, Dave (Kathy) Welle, Judy (Duane) Rothstein; sister-in-law Sharon Welle; 15 grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Nick and Monica Welle and his brother Leon Welle.

Arrangements are being made with Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Albany.

Harvey was a devoted Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 67 and a former member of the Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Nienaber; daughters, Lana Nelson, Katherine Gilbert, Erika Nienaber, and Anna (Travis) Salzwedel; granddaughters, Sydney Gilbert and Eleanor Salzwedel; siblings, Roman (Millie) Nienaber, Eileen (Tony) Nienaber, Richard (Millie) Nienaber, Thomas (Rosie) Nienaber, Mary Ann (Alfred) Nienaber, and Henry (Lois) Nienaber.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodor H. and Marie A. Nienaber; brothers, Bernard and Victor; and sister, Anna Marie.

Serving as casket bearers will be Roman, Richard, Thomas, and Henry Nienaber, John Wolfe, and Travis Salzwedel. Cross bearer will be Eileen Nienaber and scripture bearer will be Mary Ann Nienaber.

Louise E. Desautel

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Louise E. Desautel, age 89, of Albany, will be at 4:00 PM on Friday, April 10, 2015 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Fr. Brad Jenniges, OSB will officiate and burial will take place in parish cemetery. Louise died April 6, 2015 surrounded by her loved ones.

There will be a visitation from 4:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany and again after 3:00 PM Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM followed by Christian Mothers praying the rosary at 6:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Louise Desautel was born in Buckman, MN to Matthew E. and Mary (Tetvia) Hesch March 8, 1926. She attended St. Michael elementary school in Buckman, MN, St. Francis high school in Little Falls, MN, and went on to earn her registered nurse degree at St. Francis hospital in Breckenridge, MN. With a strong love for travel she pursued her career at numerous hospitals including: Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii.

In these earlier days it was her lifelong friend and co-worker who joined her on many of these travels, Helen Schmolke of Houston, TX. Returning from Hawaii Louise found herself working at a hospital in Crookston, MN and it was there she met the love of her life and would go on to start her family.

Louise married James George Desautel (from Crookston, MN) on August 27, 1955 at St. Michaels church in Buckman, MN. Louise and James settled in Albany, MN to raise their family. Louise retired from her nursing career and pursued other business ventures including “Big J” citizen band radio sales (a joint venture with her husband) and a distributorship in New Era cookware through which Louise’s

entrepreneurial talents would find her door to door selling her products. Louise’s husband died suddenly on June 27, 1978 (age 48).

Louise spent her remaining years in Albany, MN with a strong dedication to her children, community, and church. She was actively involved as a member in the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care auxiliary (Albany, MN), the VFW auxiliary (Melrose, MN), and the Boy Scout board of directors (Albany, MN), and she was past president of the Christian Mothers, American Legion auxiliary (Albany, MN). Louise maintained close relationships with many of the Franciscan nuns who would frequently join in at these gatherings.

Louise is survived by her six children Denise (Michael “Rocco” Theisen) Desautel, St. Cloud, MN; Paul Desautel, Baudette, MN: Peter (Janet Demarais) Desautel, Albany, MN; Jane (Michael “Monk”) Montgomery, St. Cloud, MN; Laurie Desautel, Lake Forest, CA; Harold (Angie) Desautel, Albany, MN; sisters Irene Kulig, Superior, WI; Laura Alkofer, Park River, ND; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters and brothers-in-law Adeline (Bob) Dion, Mary (Ralph) Linville, Helen Hesch, and Dolores (Art) Eben, brothers-inlaw Gene Kulig, Ray Alkofer, and sisters-inlaw Harriet (Verne) Anderson and Jan Lee (Jim) DeLage.

Louise was remembered by many for her hats and earrings. Louise asked to be remembered as a woman of faith. A woman who loved and cared for her family’s wellbeing.

Richard B. Shank

Richard Brian Shank, age 53, Holdingford, MN, died Monday, April 6, 2014 at his home in Holdingford.

There will be no funeral service.

Richard was born July 18, 1961 to Roy Bernard and Esther Rose (Knoll) Shank.

Survivors include a brother, William Shank of Holdingford, MN.

Bernice M. Nohner

B e r n i c e M. Nohner, age 88 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 5, 2015, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Bernice Margaret Froehling was born February 17, 1927, in Watkins, Minnesota, to Mathew and Frances (Dockendorf) Froehling. On October 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Fabian Nohner at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Watkins.

Bernice brought a warm, welcoming and vibrant spirit to the resort she and Fabian operated on Big Birch Lake for 40 years. Her hospitality brightened the days for family, friends and guests to the lake. She also loved sharing her fishing tips and expertise with anyone who would listen. Her life’s enjoyment was forever reflected in her nine children, 13 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, St.

Swanville Elementary participates in Jump Rope For Heart

By Sharon Pesta On March 13, 2015, the Swanville Elementary students participated in the American Heart Associations Jump Rope for Heart event in their Physical Education classes. The first through sixth grade students collected $4,259.00 which exceeded last year’s amount of $3,726.00.

Students have been improving their heart health by learning challenging skills in our jump rope unit.

Stations on the day of the event included an obstacle course, jump sticks, hula hoops and jump ropes.

Although the elementary school participates in the Jump Rope for Heart event each year, the community continually supports the students. That support is greatly appreciated. When donations reach $1500.00, the physical education also benefits, because it receives a gift certificate from US. Games to purchase equipment.

Because the elementary participates yearly, we were eligible to apply for a grant. We were recipient of a MNSHAPE Jump Rope for Heart $500 grant to purchase additional physical education equipment.

John and Deborah Binsfeld will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 19th at 1:00 p.m., at All Saints-St. Hedwig. Refreshments to follow in the church basement.

John and Deborah Binsfeld were married on April 5, 1975 at the church of St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Travis Barthel has been chosen as the grade ten through twelve Student of the Month for March. He is a sophomore and the son of Bruce and Jeanette Barthel. His advice for other students is to “Work hard at what you want and you will achieve it. Have fun doing it, laugh and smile! People will wonder what you are up to!

Kerie Thoma, Activities Director said, “I have worked with Travis in several different aspects over the years.

He has always been an extremely hard working individual who has never hesitated to do what was asked of him. He enjoys helping whenever he can, and has a lot of pride in the work he does.

Travis is one of those kids who will go out of his way to help someone. He has helped me out at school with several different projects within the activities department. He is always making me laugh and is so much fun to be around!

I have watched him mature since he was in the seventh grade. I am always impressed how he gets along with his peers and teachers. He is careful not to hurt anyone’s feelings, yet he has a way to make people laugh and feel good about themselves. He uses his quick wit and sense of humor quite often to make others smile. Travis is self-motivated so others don’t have to worry if he will accomplish the task he starts. I have every confidence in the world that Travis will

be successful in whatever he pursues in his future! Congrats to Travis Barthel on this very deserving award!”

Travis enjoys playing basketball and baseball. He also enjoys playing video games and spending time with family.

His future plans are to attend college to become an accountant.

Travis has participated in football in grades seven through nine and plays basketball and baseball currently, participating since seventh grade. He is a member of the yearbook staff.

Outside of school Travis donates his time and talents in many ways. He volunteers many hours at the Swanville Carnival, participates in various church activities and helps with the elementary basketball program. He donates blood through the American Red Cross. He is a former Knights of Columbus District Free Throw Champion and is consistently on the Honor Roll.

Char Bzdok, Science teacher comments, “I have had the wonderful opportunity of teaching Travis the past few years! In this time I have seen amazing maturity both in character and academics. Travis is just one of those students who is easy to talk with. He gets along with all of his classmates and I believe his classmates and peers look up to him because he has great character. Travis is very deserving of this award!”

Zebra Mussel - What Do They Look Like?

By Joe Lang At our recent lake Association meeting I was asked what size Zebra Mussels are and what do they look like. Here are some examples.

As you can see they start really small which makes them hard to detect

which is why if you know you have had your boat in a lake with Zebra Mussels in it your boat, motor, live well, minnow buckets and trailer needs to be cleaned with 170 degree water. That is the temp it takes to kill them. Live wells should be wiped out with bleach water, or it takes 21 days for them to die by drying them out. Very dry conditions takes a bit less time. Keep in mind any boat lift or dock from another lake requires the same treatment.

Remember only you can help save our lakes! Clean, drain and dry all water related equipment. If it’s been in an infected lake it needs to be cleaned and dried out.

Mark your calendar: College Night 2015 If you are graduating from high school this spring or next year, or are a current college student, then you should come to the Upsala High School on April 25th from 7-9 PM, for the 5th Annual “College Night.”

The evening is designed to help incoming freshman and current college students understand and better prepare for all the difficulties of college life.

When students experience a first time freedom in making choices after high school, those choices can sometimes lead to life changing consequences.

The College Night staff wants every student to be aware of the many choices that are ahead of them so they can avoid the negative consequences and succeed and finish college without regrets. To

accomplish this the College Night Staff has recruited a panel of current college students from several area colleges to share what they have learned and to answer your questions about college life (study habits, roommates, money, sexual temptations, partying temptations, what to do if you get homesick and what degree should I pursue).

Waiting, at best, is difficult. Giving up, however, can be disastrous.

We often hear the warning, “Don’t ever pray for patience. God may take you at your word and hide from you for a long, long time.” Whether or not we pray for patience, we often end up waiting on God for a long, long time. It is easy to convince ourselves that “I’ve waited long enough. It’s time for me to strike out on my own. God will eventually catch up with me.”

“We wait in hope for the Lord,” said David, “He is our help and shield!” Why would a king with armies and wise men, property and power advise people to wait? Why not, as a warrior, “move into combat?”

From his past David could predict his future. First, the God who created all things, is above all things, sees all things, controls all things will, when it is time, come and “do His thing.” David had experienced God at work in his life and certainly came to believe in God’s presence and power in his life. So, he reassures us and reminds us that He “is now and will be in the future our helper and our shield.”

As our helper, He will, at the appropriate time, deliver us. We may not know when or understand what method of deliverance He will use, but we do know that He will deliver those who trust in Him. We have His word because it is in His Word. However, until He does, we are reminded that He is our shield - the One who will defend us. Our hope is in His hands.

Dear Dave, We have two girls in competitive gymnastics, and it’s costing $12,000 to $15,000 a year at a professional gym to do all this.

My wife and I both work, and we make about $115,000 a year, but virtually all of her income goes toward paying the gymnastics bill. We’re also trying to get out of debt and get better control of our money at the same time. Should we focus more on our finances right now?

-Jim Dear Jim, If I were in your shoes, I’d be asking myself why the kids are in gymnastics.

Unless you guys are trying to send them to the Olympics — and they’re actually good enough to reach that level — teaching them things like discipline and to master their bodies through physical training can be done at a local amateur level. And at a much lower cost.

My son played ice hockey in local leagues for years when he was growing up. We did it as a family thing, and he had lots of fun and we all made great new friends. He even played some in high school, too, but he wasn’t NHL material or anything like that. It didn’t change his life that he didn’t play on a traveling team or with professional trainers, so we had to ask ourselves, “What will it matter when he’s 30 years old?”

You make good money, so that’s not really the big issue. If you guys made $50,000 or less, I’d be yelling at you. But with your income, the gymnastics thing probably isn’t going to slow you down too much when it comes to getting your financial house in order. In other words, it’s a parental thing. Ask yourself why you’re investing so heavily in this, and what the goal is when they’re adults. I think that will help you make the smart decision.

He found a great job with great pay in Charlottesville, Virginia, after graduation, and we both agreed he couldn’t pass it up. I’m still in Portland, Oregon, with a good marketing job making $50,000 a year. We’re trying to get out of debt. If I join him now, I won’t have a job and we won’t pay off our debt as quickly. But being apart is so difficult. Should I go ahead and make the move now?

-Danielle Dear Danielle, If he’s making great money, and you guys can make it on one salary while you look for another job, then I’d say go for

it. There are things in life that are more important than money, getting out of debt in a certain amount of time, or a particular job.

Have you talked to your company about the possibility of doing your job remotely? If that’s not possible, maybe you could do some consulting on a remote basis. Even if you weren’t a traditional employee, they might float some projects your way.

Talk to them about these ideas, and start shopping for a position in Charlottesville.

It’s a university community, if I remember correctly, so there are probably lots of opportunities in your field.

Often times they will leave phone messages stating that the victim is under investigation or is going to be audited by the IRS if they don’t return a call to a specific phone number. If you receive a call similar to this do not call the number they provide. Please contact the Sheriff’s Office if you have been a victim of a phone scam.

Wednesday, April 1, 2015: Todd County Sheriffs Office received a garbage dumping complaint. Grey Eagle Township reported that someone had dumped 15 tires in the south side ditch of 150th St. near the intersection of 315th Ave. If you have any information on this incident please contact the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

Wednesday, April 1, 2015: Todd County Sheriffs Office received a damage to property compliant on Angler Trail. Lowelle Zimmerman of Grey Eagle reported that sometime this recent winter someone came and dug a 8 x 4 foot hole along his septic tank in his yard. Central Minnesota Credit Union Announces 2015 CMCU Scholarship Winners Central Minnesota Credit Union (CMCU) is proud to announce the recipients of the 2015 CMCU Scholarships. A total of $17,000 in scholarships was awarded; $14,000 in video scholarships, and $3,000 for essay scholarships.

Every year, CMCU offers scholarships to CMCU members to further their education at a two or four year college.

This year, more than 160 students applied for the scholarships throughout CMCU’s field of membership. Video scholarships were based on a creative and unique 30-60 second video based on the guideline: “Demonstrate how CMCU has been centered on you and why people should go to CMCU for their financial needs.” Essay scholarships were required to answer the same question.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office Saturday, April 4, 2015: At approximately 2144 hrs. the Little Falls Police Department received a report of a possible residential fire at 800 Highland Avenue. Upon arrival Officers observed smoke coming from the residence. The Little Falls Fire Department arrived on scene a short time later. It was then determined that there was no one inside. Officers on scene received information relating to some possible suspects that may have caused the fire. Three individuals were interviewed regarding their involvement. Officers determined that the fire was intentionally set and the three individuals were taken into custody. They are currently being held in the Morrison County Jail pending formal charges. The home appears to be a total loss.

The purpose of this Public Hearing is to go over the proposed amendment to change the planning and zoning ordinance to: permitted in a commercial district an upto 3 unit dwelling, page 38 in p & z booklet and to introduce the new zoning map.

Mayor Peterson went over the new changes to the P & Z ordinance and presented the new map. Comments and questions were answered by Mayor Peterson and Council Member Bartkowicz.

The public hearing was then closed.

Swanville City March 3, 2015 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, March 3, 2015. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson and Tony Maciej.

Also present: Mark Hallen and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, February 3, 2015 were read. A motion was made

by Jay Bartkowicz to approve the minutes as read. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Tony Maciej to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

There was discussion about the City purchasing a new mower. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to have council member Molitor purchase a new mower after receiving bids and the best

offer for city owned mower and not to spend more than $10,000.00 on a new mower.

Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Local Board of Equalization will meet on Monday, April 13, 2015 at 1:00 pm in the Swanville Center. Jim Molitor, Tony Maciej and Norm Carlson stated they would be present for this meeting The amendment and map for the Planning & Zoning Ordinance was again discussed.

Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to adopt the changes and the new map. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Astech proposal for street sweeping was presented to the council. After discussion Jim Molitor made a motion to sign the agreement with Astech to do the city street sweeping. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson presented the 2015 budget. After discussion Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to accept the 2015 budget. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

would have to be raised. Jim Molitor made a motion to raise the base rate for water to $16.00 and $3.80 per thousand gallons and base rate for sewer $14.00 and $6.00 per thousand gallons. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. The new rates will start May 26, 2015.

The Mayor informed the council there will be a Fire Department and First Response stipend program from the State of MN that will run through the city’s account and be distributed to each member of these departments.

Council discussed cars being parked and not moved on city streets. In the city ordinance it states no cars can be parked longer than 24 hours. It was decided to table.

The following claims were presented for payment.

Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held April 7, 2015 at 7:00 pm.

There being no further business, a motion was made

Watch the skies for pelicans migrating to Minnesota

Flocks of giant white birds are catching the eyes of outdoor enthusiasts across Minnesota, as once-rare American white pelicans migrate north to their nesting grounds across the state, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

These pelicans are among the world’s largest birds and are easily recognized in flight. Wingspans up to 9 feet, bright white plumage with black-edged wings and large,

orange bills distinguish them from any other species.

“Pelicans often fly in evenly spaced lines or ‘V’ formations,” according to Lisa GelvinInnvaer, DNR nongame wildlife specialist. “Unlike swans or geese which fly with necks outstretched, pelicans fly with their necks doubled back against their shoulders. They often set up a rhythmic pattern of wing beats that ripple from the lead bird back to the end.”

American white pelicans were driven to near extinction in the early 20th century from human pressures. There were no reports of nesting pelicans in Minnesota for 90 years, from 1878 until 1968.

Conservation efforts and federal regulations have helped pelican populations make a slow and steady comeback. Still, they remain one of Minnesota’s “Species in Greatest Con-

Picking Vegetable Varieties for Preserving

If you are a home food preserver who plans to pickle, can, freeze or dry your garden produce, it is important to select vegetable varieties that have been developed for home preserving.

Plan to preserve dill pickles this summer?

Be sure to select a “pickling” cucumber variety rather than a slicing cucumber to plant in your garden.

For pickled beets select a dark, rich colored beet. A beet variety description may state ‘harvest early for pickling’ in the catalogue or on the seed packet.

A thick flavorful salsa begins with planting a paste tomato variety like Roma, Viva Italian or Amish Paste rather than a juice tomato. They will be identified as ‘great for sauces and salsa.’ Paste tomatoes are also a good choice for making flavorful dried tomatoes.

With green beans you will find that some varieties are better for freezing while others produce a quality canned bean and some are best for fresh eating. Read the description on the seed packet. Pole beans, rather than bush beans, are easier to pick!

“The prairie pothole region of western Minnesota hosts 22 percent of the global population of this species,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. In Minnesota, the last survey estimated about 22,000 pairs of pelicans that nest at 16 sites on seven lakes across the state. This year, another statewide survey will provide an update.

American white pelicans leave Minnesota each fall as lakes and rivers freeze. They winter along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico, and typically return to Minnesota in early spring as lakes and rivers thaw.

The birds are highly social and live in large, dense colonies. They feed exclusively on small fish and crustaceans, and will work together for a meal.

“A group of pelicans will swim in a semicircle to herd their prey into shallow water,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. “Then, they’ll scoop up fish and water in their beak pouch, drain out the water and swallow their food.”

Gelvin-Innvaer advises that the birds are best enjoyed from a distance. “Pelican nesting colonies are vulnerable to human disturbance. Minimizing contact helps to conserve them as part of Minnesota’s natural heritage,” she said.

The donations fund research, surveys, habitat restoration and education for more than 700 wildlife species that are not hunted.

Reminder for Final Lake Service Provider Trainings Before Ice-Out The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is holding the last round of 2015 aquatic invasive species (AIS) training sessions for lake service providers. The training is required for businesses that install, remove, rent or decontaminate water-related equipment such as docks, lifts, rafts, boats, or sprinkler systems from lakes and rivers in Minnesota.

Lake service providers such as dock and lift companies, marinas, resorts, boat hauling and storage companies, outfitters and irrigators must attend AIS training and acquire a permit before completing work in Minnesota waters. The permit is valid for three years and must be in possession while providing services.

“2015 is the first renewal year for the permit program, and more than 800 busi-

nesses have already completed or registered for one of the 32 trainings offered this year,” said April Rust, AIS training coordinator.

“The remaining businesses that still need training have nine more training opportunities around the state.”

In these sessions, lake service providers learn about current AIS laws and how to integrate prevention strategies into their business practices.

Two optional hot-water high-pressure decontamination trainings will also be offered this summer to businesses interested in becoming trained in AIS decontamination.
