However, to his surprise, the master carpenter said he would not be hiring the skillful apprentice. The reason: “When you do make a mistake, you won’t know how to fix it.”

His reasoning was shockingly practical. You learn from making real-life mistakes to show people you can handle them.

I completely agree with that hiring decision. It’s okay to make mistakes.

But you have to learn from them. If you just keep making the same mistakes, one of two things is happening: You are not paying attention or you just don’t care.

So often, the person who never makes a mistake takes orders from the person who does. The risk-takers tend to become the entrepreneurs and managers. And some of the mistakes they have made are costly and embarrassing. But the lessons they learned taught them how to “fix it,” as Mr. Rogers would say.

Thomas Watson Sr., the founder of IBM, said of mistakes: “Double your rate of failure … failure is a teacher – a harsh one, perhaps, but the best … That’s what I have to do when an idea backfires or a sales program fails. You’ve got to put failure to work for you … you can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes.

Make all you can. Because that’s where

you will find success. On the far side of failure.”

The person who makes a mistake and then makes an excuse for it is making two mistakes. People respect those who take responsibility for their own errors.

Regardless, you will be better off admitting them than spending considerably more energy trying to avoid the subject. If you seize the opportunity to learn what went wrong, you’ll be a lot less likely to make the same mistake again.

In the words of our favorite baseball philosopher, Yogi Berra, “Don’t make the wrong mistakes.”

Embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow. In today’s business climate, people are making split-second decisions. That presents the likelihood for mistakes. But keep in mind that if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not taking any risks.

“Mistakes are the downside of risktaking. And it seems as if we’ve become very unwilling to tolerate mistakes. We’re willing to risk failure in our games, in extreme sports, in our competition on TV reality shows,” said my friend William R. Brody, former president of Johns Hopkins University. “But not in our business. Not in our research and development – not in our careers or in our medicines or homes, our schools or our personal lives.

As a nation, we’ve become downright pantophobic. We are like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights, afraid to do anything. Being risk-averse is hurting our global competitiveness and stagnating our incomes.”

Managers have a specific role in dealing with staff mistakes. You want your staff to make as few mistakes as possible. But workers do need to know when they make mistakes so that they can learn and grow in the workplace.

As a manager, you need to think about the problem and assess how important the

mistake is. If the mistake was made out of lack of awareness, let the person know what has happened, and explore whether he or she knows how to prevent it in the future. If the mistake was made out of carelessness, then talk to your employee.

Find out if something is distracting him or her. If the worker is feeling overworked, see if you can provide some help.

Remember, when an employee fails, you share the blame, just as you share the credit for your workers’ successes. Make sure that you don’t abdicate your responsibility. Verify that you have communicated clearly so that employees know what you expect. And most importantly, be available to help.

Because if you fail your employees, you are making the worst mistake.

Mackay’s Moral: If you don’t learn from your mistakes, there’s no sense making them.

Obituaries Ronald B. Anderson

Services celebrating the life of Ronald B. Anderson, age 57 of Baxter, was held Tuesday, April 28 at the MillerCarlin Funeral Home Chapel in St. Cloud. Burial will be in Northstar Cemetery.

Ron died Friday at his mother’s home in St. Cloud after a

brief illness.

Ron was born September 22, 1957, in Minneapolis to Allen and Audrey (Swenson)

Alma A. Frieler

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Alma A. Frieler, age 84, of Albany, took place Monday, April 27, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Father John Odero officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery.

Alma passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, April 23, 2015 with family by her side at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Alma was born July 28, 1930 to Fritz and Bertha (Herzog) Dickhaus in Melrose. She grew up in town alongside nine siblings. On June 20, 1950, Alma married Bernard Frieler in Melrose and they welcomed ten children to complete their family. From 1950-1970 she and Bernard farmed while raising their youngsters in Upsala. They also owned and

Anderson. He grew up in Moose Lake and graduated from the Moose Lake High School. He moved to White Bear Lake and then settled in Baxter where he has lived for over 30 years. He owned “Captian Ron’s” bar in Staples for several years. He sold the bar two years ago and authored a children’s book, “Quack, the Lucky Duckling.” He has donated proceeds from the sale of each book to Camp Confidence in East Gull Lake, MN. Ron is survived by his mother, Audrey Anderson, St. Cloud; his brothers, Timothy (Marilyn) Anderson St. Cloud and Terry (Katie) Anderson, St. Cloud. He is also survived by his daughter, Katelyn Hendricks and a grandson.

He is preceded in death by his father, Allen Anderson in 2009.

Bernard handled most of the PR for their businesses and Alma loved the time she spent baking and cooking in the cafes. She retired in 1985 after selling their businesses and spent many years as a “snowbird” spending winters in Arizona. Alma enjoyed travelling, spoiling the grandkids, flower gardening, and sewing. Over the years she has made many clothes for her children, and as they grew-up, for her grandchildren as well. Alma was a strong-willed feisty lady who cared for so many people. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala and the Christian Mothers.

Alma is survived by her children Margie (Roland) Meyer, Burleson, TX; Fred Frieler, Browerville; Mark (Lu) Frieler, Wadena; Donald (Anita) Frieler, Swanville; Nancy (Lonnie) Ritter, Grey Eagle; Denise (Larry) Plumski, Little Falls; Neil (Peggy) Frieler, Elmdale; Trudy (Byron) Westrich, Kimball; her sisters Helen Blommel, Monica Arhens, Corrine (Jim) Shay, Karen (John) Callahan; 27 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.

She is preceded by her parents Fritz and Bertha, husband Bernard in July of 2005, infants Pamela and David, sisters Irene Poepping, Marie Hinnenkamp, brothers Henry Dickhaus, Vernon Dickhaus, Alcuin Dickhaus, and infant grandson Luke Frieler.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anna for Helen Schmainda, 98 who died Friday, April 24, 2015 at the Cherrywood Advanced Living, Richmond. Rev. Al Stangl will officiate and an interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends and relatives may call from 9 to 11 AM prior to the service at the church in St. Anna. Arrangements are being handled by the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home of St. Cloud.

Helen was born New York City, New York.

Some time in her first year or two of life she was left at the Foundling Home in Brooklyn.

At age 2 she was taken by the orphan Train to Avon, MN. There she was greeted by her new parents, Stanley and Anna (Hennek) Dobis.

Helen and her brother Irvin, adopted at the same time and at the same age, were lovingly

reared and cared for by their new parents in the apartment connected to the General Store in St. Anna. Helen was to spend the rest of her working days in that same store and apartment.

Helen married Stanley Schmainda in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Anna in 1938. Together they ran the general store and Pelican Lake Ballroom for over 35 years while raising their four children. It was here, in the store, that Helen came alive. One of her greatest joys was to visit with people who came into the store. Helen and Stanley retired from the store in 1973. She was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church, St. Anna.

Helen is survived by her sons and daughter, Robert and his wife Elizabeth of St. Cloud, William and his wife Geralyn of St. Anna, Ronald and his wife Patricia of St. Anna, and Sharon Hron and her husband Thomas of Fountain Hills, AZ; sister-in-law Elinor Dobis of Michigan; grandchildren Christopher, Stephanie Kerr and her husband Mark, Kelly and Aric; great grandchildren Brandon, Nathan, Jacob and Sydney; also her step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Stanley on August 29, 1978 and her brother Irvin, in 2010.

May is Stroke Awareness Month PSA Stroke is a leading cause of serious, longterm disability and fifth for death in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. Approximately 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke each year, killing nearly 130,000 of them.

Strokes occur when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and vital nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or ruptures. When this occurs, part of the brain is deprived of blood and oxygen, destroying millions of valuable nerve cells within minutes.

The resulting damage can lead to significant disability including paralysis, speech problems and emotional difficulties. Treatment may be available if you get to the emergency room immediately upon recognition of stroke symptoms. Unfortunately, only 25 percent of patients experiencing an acute stroke seek immediate medical treatment reports the article in the Journal of American Heart Association, “Reducing the Delay Between Stroke Onset and Hospital Arrival: Is It an Achievable Goal?”

Dear Dave, I was recently notified that I am one of the beneficiaries of a class action lawsuit against a previous employer.

The amount I can receive is just $200, but I don’t feel like this past employer wronged me in any way. Everyone around me is urging me to take the money, but I feel kind of weird about accepting anything under the circumstances. What do you think I should do?

-Randy Dear Randy, I don’t know all the details of the episode you’re talking about, or what happened with this particular company.

But I don’t agree with the idea that we’re supposed to beat up anyone we can, or milk everything we can get out of every company or human being we come across. Some people are just incredibly opportunistic. They live like it’s anarchy, and they have no sense of fairness or decorum. But you do.

The people who are telling you to take the cash don’t think the way you do. They’re the kind who would take any money, no matter the reason. But you sound like the kind of person who wouldn’t do that, so you shouldn’t betaking advice from those people.

I think your heart has already told you what to do, Randy. God is whispering in your ear. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn’t take it. If it were $100,000, I wouldn’t take it. You were not wronged, and that money is for someone who was wronged.

You have a sense of dignity and pride about yourself and your behavior, and I respect that. My advice is to listen to your heart.

Dear Dave, I just became debt-free, and I live in an apartment. I’m also 28 and single, and I make about $75,000 a year. Do you think I should get a mortgage and go back into debt, or save up and pay cash for a house?

I’d like to keep the price of a new home around $200,000, and I think I can save about $15,000 a year.

When it comes to saving, how about rounding that figure up to $20,000 a year?

Going that route, you’re only 10 years away from a nice, new paid-for home, and you’re still debt-free. That’s one way to do it.

I don’t borrow money, Kevin. And I don’t tell people to do things I won’t do.

The one exception to that is I don’t yell at people for taking out a 15-year, fixedrate mortgage, where the payments are no more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. You could save like crazy for a couple of years and put down a really strong down payment on a home in the price range you’re talking about. Then, you could pay off that house in 15 years max — or even sooner.

I don’t have a big problem with it either way. But wouldn’t it be great to be only 38 years old and still be completely debt-free?

The Cub Scouts of Melrose Pack 68 were visited by DNR Conservation Officer Calob Silgjord during their Monday, April 27th, pack meeting at the Melrose City Hall. The officer discussed water and boat safety with the Cub Scouts and then talked about wildlife and endangered species. The Cub Scouts enjoyed seeing and handling the various animal pelts Officer Silgjord passed around.

Thought for House Budget Bills Advancing; Steps to Combat the week: Avian Flu Continue

Action has switched from daily committee meeting to long floor sessions in the Minnesota House as we debate and pass the major omnibus spending bills that will provide the funding to operate state budgets for the next two years beginning July 1. In all, there are 10 spending bills that need approval, and we worked through half of them in the past week. The others, including House Republicans’ nearly $2 billion tax-cut bill, will be up for debate this week.

One of the spending bills passed last week was the transportation bill, which will now go to a conference committee with the Senate. Included in House plan is a $25 million appropriation for cities under 5,000 population that will as-

sist them with their local transportation needs. In total, it raises $7 billion over the next 10 years without any additional gas taxes. Currently, both the Senate and Gov. Dayton have a different plan in that they are proposing a sales tax increase on fuel, which would go up or down annually, based on the wholesale price of gas. Sixteen cents per gallon would be the minimum increase under their plan, with additional hikes as the price of fuel goes up.

The largest single outlay in state government, the K-12 education bill, was passed in a rare Saturday session last week. Many are concerned about the relatively small increase in the basic education formula the state pays to local schools based on student enrollment. The House proposal calls for a 1.2 percent increase over two years; while both the Senate and governor have a 2 percent increase in their plans. To me, the biggest topic that needs compromise in this area is the governor’s call for a new area of spending for pre-kindergarten students. It spreads available funding too thin and adds additional cost to schools, leaving less funding to put on the basic formula.

On a related note, included in our House education bill is wording that allows local school districts to make their own decision on implementing a fourday school week. One school in our area, BBE, had gone to that schedule

and found it fairly successful. However, the State Dept. of Education will not allow them to continue using the fourday week in the future. It is uncertain if the governor would support the new language in this bill. In additional, on a voice vote, House members voted down the annual request to allow schools to begin classes before Labor Day. National Guard units from Willmar and Brooklyn Park will be activated this week to assist in delivering water for use in disease containment as it relates to the avian influenza outbreak in Minnesota. At least 30 soldiers and 15 military trucks will be utilized at first to assist in the foaming process, which is the method used to de-populate affected birds as a measure to contain the disease and keep it from spreading.

The emergency spending bill, providing funding to the Dept. of Agriculture and the Board of Animal Health during this outbreak, has been caught up in the political process at the Legislature. The House suspended its rules and passed the measure that gives additional funding for the remainder of this fiscal year through June 30. However, the Senate added a completely unrelated amendment to the bill and sent it back to the House. We voted not to accept the bill in that form and appointed members to a conference committee to work on cleaning up the language. As of this writing (April 27), that work had not been completed and the bill has not been sent to the governor for his signature.

James said, “No human being can tame the tongue.” Perhaps the best way to start a “good day” would be to ask God to control our tongue and use it to encourage others and praise Him. 2. Turn from evil and do good! Another way to have a good day is to ask God to make us sensitive to the temptations we are sure to face as the day unfolds. It was Jesus who encouraged us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation.” He knew that we would have to face temptation every day of our lives so he advised us to ask for God’s help before we faced them. And don’t forget the words of Paul, “It is possible,” he said, “to escape temptation and avoid sin” if we call on God for help.

3. Seek peace and pursue it. This does not mean we are to surrender and avoid conflict. It means that we can enjoy peace in the midst of conflict if the conflict comes from being obedient to His Word, doing His will and following the path He has set before us.

Melrose City March 19, 2015 The Melrose City Council met in a Regular Meeting on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melrose City Center pursuant to due notice being given thereof.

Present were Council Members Tony Klasen, Jenny Mayers, Dick Christenson, and Josh Thieschafer, Mayor Joe Finken, City Administrator/Treasurer Michael Brethorst and City Clerk Patti Haase. Mayor Finken presided thereat. The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Ms. Mayers, seconded by Mr. Christenson and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as submitted.

Mayor Finken then opened the floor to public comment. There were no comments.

The following items were considered for approval under the Consent Agenda: a. the minutes from the Council’s February 19 Regular Meeting and the February 19 Special Joint Meeting with Area Township and City Officials. b. list of bills in the amount of $ 191,785.81. c. list of investments for the month of February. d. Stearns County Appraisers Don Ramler and Deb Haus provided an update on valuation changes and other items pertaining to the assessment process. Stearns County Appraiser Don Ramler noted that there were only two commercial property sales for the period of October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. Ms. Haus presented data for the residential property sales for the period of October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. There were 33 residential property sales that occurred during this period of which two were vacant lots. The full report is on file at the City Center. Mr. Ramler and Ms. Haus will be available to answer questions regarding the 2015 estimated market values and tax classifications of city properties at the Melrose City Center on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Police Chief Craig Maus presented the Police Department’s February report. He noted there were 220 calls for service during that month compared to 176 for January 2014. A total of 21 citations were written for the month of February. The year-to-date number of calls is 427 compared to 307 in 2014. For the month of February 2015, the Department received 27 agency assist calls.

Planning and Development Director Walz and Council/Commission Member Klasen reported on the Commission’s March 2 Regular Meeting. The meeting focused mainly on the review of the Zoning Ordinance.

City Attorney Scott Dymoke reported on projects he has been working on for the City: • West Substation Utility Easements: Received additional information from City staff regarding property owners affected by utility easements. Revised easement agreements to incorporate new information and forwarded to City staff for execution • Riverside Avenue Rightof-Way Easements: Reviewed request for subdivision information submitted to City staff. Proposed subdivision request conflicted with prior subdivisions. Reviewed rightof-way easements on file with the County Recorder and determined that proposed subdivision incorrectly located right-of-way of Riverside Avenue. Forwarded easement documents and findings to City staff.

Mayor Finken recognized the Melrose Boys Basketball Team for winning the 2014-2015 Class 2A State Basketball Championship on Saturday, March 14 at the Target Center. Thursday, March 19, 2015 is proclaimed as Melrose Boys Basketball Day. Mayor Finken then read the proclamation and presented each of the coaches and team members with the proclamation. They were given a standing ovation by Council members, staff, and attendees.

A motion was made by Mr. Christenson, seconded by Ms. Mayers and unanimously carried to adopt a proclamation proclaiming Thursday March 19, 2015 as Melrose Boys Basketball Day and congratulating the Melrose Dutchmen and the coaching staff on the 2014-2015 Class 2A Boys State Basketball Championship.

Mayor Finken then presented Mady Brinkman a Certificate – 2015 Minnesota State High School Balance Beam Champion. Mayor Finken, Council members, staff and attendees gave Ms. Brinkman a standing ovation for her brilliant performance and dedication to the gymnastic program.

Mayor Finken noted that the League of Minnesota Cities and the Minnesota Association of Small Cities is encouraging all Minnesota Cities to pass a Transportation Resolution in support of a new dedicated state funding source for our city streets. Administrator Brethorst stated that more than 700 cities with population of 5,000 or less are ineligible for dedicated Highway User Tax Distribution Fund dollars, and rely on local property taxes and other local income sources for funding of street maintenance. Mr. Klasen inquired if the additional funding would come from an increase in the gas tax or other tax increases. It was not determined at this point in the legislative process exactly how this would be funded.

Mr. Thieschafer introduced Resolution No. 2015-11, A Resolution Supporting Dedicated State Funding for City Streets. The motion was seconded by Ms. Mayers with a roll call vote recorded as follows: For: Council Members Thieschafer, Mayers, and Mayor Finken; Against: Council Members Klasen and Christenson.

The League of Minnesota Cites is encouraging all Minnesota cities to pass a resolution supporting a true early voting system. City Clerk Haase noted the intent of the legislation is to allow voters to place their voted ballot directly into the ballot tabulator, thereby reducing the rise of voter errors.

Ms. Haase noted that currently the County processes the absentee ballots and was not sure how the early voting process would be handled. If the City were to conduct the early voting, costs would be incurred for additional election judge staffing.

The resolution failed as the Council did not bring the resolution to the floor for a vote.

The Council then reviewed a draft Telecommuting Policy which is a work arrangement that permits employees to work off-site in their homes for part or all of a workweek in special circumstances such leaves as maternity, care of a sick child, spouse, etc. and/or other extended leaves. Each leave would require City Administrator and/or Appointing Authority approval. The employee would need to complete the Application to Telecommute.

Mr. Klasen commented that he would like to see a clause added requiring a medical note be provided by the employee’s physician.

A motion was made by Mr. Christenson, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried concurring with the Commission adopting the Telecommuting Policy as amended.

at an estimated $429,800. This would include bituminous sawcut, bituminous removal, re-compaction of base and bituminous patching, improving turn radius at the northwest corner of 5th Avenue SE intersection, and 2” overlay, 3” overlay (over existing ag base) on the north shoulder form 5th Avenue SE to 12th Avenue SE, 6” bituminous for turn radius improvements.

Mr. Christenson stated that it may be in the best interest to further review the existing data prior to making a determination.

A motion was made by Mr. Christenson to table this matter at this time and to bring it before the Council at a special meeting or at its next regular meeting to allow for future review of project. The motion was seconded by Mr. Thieschafer with a roll call vote recorded as follows: For: Council Members Christenson, Thieschafer, Mayers, and Mayor Finken; Against: Council Member Klasen.

Finance Director Beuning stated that City staff has spent approximately six months discussing and looking into a new accounting and utility billing software. After an initial email message to municipalities in Minnesota for recommendations, a number a vendors were reviewed until four were decided upon to look into further. Requests for proposals were received from three of those vendors and demonstrations were viewed from each.

Staff contacted a number of references to get the best information of each of the vendors to be sure we were meeting our due diligence on finding the right software to fit the needs of the City. It was focused on finding a system that will be able to provide all technologic needs to bring us up to speed, but yet focused on not overshooting and getting more than a city of our size needs.

From there, it was narrowed

down to one vendor that best suited the City’s needs as well as budget constraints. Areas particularly focused upon were better reporting features, more advanced technology, increased efficiency for staff, and to reduce the need for manual reporting and adjustments which will also reduce the risk of errors.

It is proposed to the Council to approve the switch to Civic Systems, LLC. Civic Systems serves over 250 municipalities and 300 utilities throughout the Midwest over the last 30 years. The contract with ACS/Xerox ends on September 28, 2015 and Civic Systems was confident that they would be able to meet that deadline to have us fully converted by that point.

The total cost of investment

for the proposed system is approximately $77,400. The investment cost will be paid over two years at 0% interest.

The City’s server that supports the ACS software is nearing five years of age. This piece of equipment is planned to be replaced / upgraded every five years. Staff is working with a vendor to develop a cost for the replacement of the server or conversation. This would occur the same time conversion to Civic would occur, if approved. The cost estimates and process would be determined prior to the June 2015 Council and Utilities Commission meetings.

A motion was made by Ms. Mayers, seconded by Mr. Christenson and unanimously carried concurring with the Commission approving the switch to Civic Systems software package at the cost noted.

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month Eighth grade student MacKenzie Feuling has been chosen as the Swanville Schools April Student of the Month for grades 7-9.

She is the daughter of Lisa and Matt Hagstrom.

Although MacKenzie is only an eighth grader, she has certainly been active throughout her high school career so far. She has played volleyball, basketball and softball. She was also in band for two years. MacKenzie has been on the honor roll since first quarter of seventh grade and continues to do very well academically.

“MacKenzie is driven to be successful. She takes great care in completing tasks and does excellent work, states Chantell Frie High School English Teacher.

She goes on to add, “MacKenzie is a helpful, friendly, outgoing young lady who enjoys being with her friends and making people happy. MacKenzie is not only driven in academics, but in athletics as well.

She works hard, does her best, and encourages others in all areas.”

Outside of school MacKenzie is active in volunteering her time, helping neighbors, working at church activities and helping during Swanville Carnival.

She has a multitude of interests outside school, including playing all sports, being with friends, helping out at the family farm, babysitting and hunting.

Marv Poegel, Physical Education teacher adds, “I currently have MacKenzie in a health/physical education class and it has been a real pleasure to have someone who is so kind and respectful in class. She always has a wonderful smile on her face and approaches life with “positive enthusiasm.” She is light-hearted and very quick to give a smile. It is evident that she cares plenty about others as she quickly helps when others are in need. MacKenzie is always active in physical education class and I know that she has participated in a sport during every season the last two years. She is quite competitive and always wants to do well in P.E. class. I also notice that MacKenzie does well with her academics. She makes sure her assignments are done well and on time. She has also taken advantage of some of the extra credit points available in health class. I can see MacKenzie growing up and getting into the human service field. She could easily be a nurse or a teacher because of her patience and understanding for others. MacKenzie truly wants the world to be a better place. It is an honor for me to write this letter for MacKenzie and I want to congratulate her and her parents for receiving this nice honor.”

MacKenzie plans on going to college to become an obstetrician. She wants other students to know to “try to be the best you can, and always give 110%.”

Free Skin Cancer Screening Scheduled A limited number of free skin cancer screenings by board-certified dermatologists will be offered Monday, May 4 and Tuesday, May 5 at CentraCare Clinic - Health Plaza, 1900 CentraCare Circle. Interested participants must call 320-229-4924 for an appointment time. No walk-ins will be accepted.

This 18th annual CentraCare Clinic screening coincides with National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, sponsored by the American Academy of Dermatology and CentraCare Clinic.

The American Academy of Dermatology is coordinating this national effort to raise awareness of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.

Current estimates are that one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is the most common cancer for 25to 29-year-olds.

The Academy’s national detection and prevention program is being launched May 4, which has been designated “Melanoma Monday,” to raise awareness of malignant

melanoma and urge Americans to regularly examine their skin for signs of serious forms of skin cancer.

Skin self-examinations consist of periodically looking over your body for any changes in the size, color, shape or texture of a mole, the development of a new mole or any other unusual changes in the skin. Any of these signs should be reported to your doctor right away.

“With melanoma, early detection is the key. Patients can watch their skin, and if there are visible changes they should be checked by their health care provider,” said Christina Anderson, M.D., dermatologist with CentraCare Clinic.

St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic to offer Support Group for Eating Disorders In the United States, nearly 30 million women and men of all ages, race and backgrounds suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, at some point in their lives. An eating disorder affects the entire family.

To help, the St. Cloud Hospital Behavioral Health Clinic is offering a Family and Friends Support Group for Eating Disorders from 5:15-6:15 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at CentraCare Health Plaza in the Leonard, Street & Deinard room. Upcoming meetings are May 7 and June 4. The group will not meet in July. Groups are led by a licensed psychologist or registered dietitian

and provide support to friends and family through education and sharing with others who also have a loved one with an eating disorder. Each month a different topic will be explored. Attendees will take away tips for making mealtimes less stressful, how to respond to food and body image struggles and what to say or not to say.
