The guru stared at him, and then after 10 long seconds opened his lips to speak: “That is indeed the road to success. It lies just beyond the ditch.”

The road to success is not without potholes. That’s the problem with many of us. We quit before we find success.

We let challenges beat us rather than rising to the occasion. We see only the difficulties in front of us but not the opportunities that can grow from them.

My own formula for success includes: • Dogged determination, • Focus and the ability to finish, • Daring to dream, • Owning and learning from mistakes, • Looking at problems as opportunities, and • Staying positive.

When Dale Carnegie was asked on a radio program to tell in three sentences the most important lesson he had ever learned, he said: “The biggest lesson I have ever learned is the stupendous importance of what we think. If I knew what you think, I would know what you

are, for your thoughts make you what you are. By changing our thoughts, we change our lives.”

In other words, the will to succeed very often determines our success.

Another important part of success is just getting out of bed. Benjamin Franklin pointed out that early to bed and early to rise can make you healthy, wealthy and wise. Unfortunately the early to rise part is a problem for many people.

But if you want to get a good start on the day, you can’t sleep your life away.

I’ve found that if you establish a routine and get up at roughly the same time every day, your body wakes itself up.

Being good at your job is only part of the recipe for success at work.

You must also incorporate these key ingredients: • Positive attitude. Managers and co-workers alike appreciate the support of someone with an upbeat outlook.

Don’t hide your enthusiasm for your job and the organization you work for.

Look for opportunities that arise from problems. Challenges help you grow.

• Integrity. Be honest with people.

When you don’t have an answer, say so.

Admit your mistakes (and concentrate on not repeating them). Keep your promises, and meet your deadlines. All this demonstrates your respect for other people and proves your reliability.

• Willingness to try. Stretch out of your comfort zone. Volunteer for new tasks and extra responsibility. Take risks—be realistic about what you can and can’t do, of course, but don’t back away from a challenge because of the possibility of failure. Ask the

right questions so you understand the situation. Never be afraid of asking a “dumb” question. Be more concerned about having to claim ignorance after the fact.

• Co-operation. Be a team player.

Help your colleagues with their priorities. Share information instead of hoarding it. Know what your manager wants, and support him or her to the best of your abilities. Offer your support when people need it. When your team is successful, you are successful.

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month

Senior Nielle Sutton has been chosen as the Swanville March Student of the Month for grades 10-12. She is the daughter of Pam and Dan Sutton.

Kathy Detloff, English teacher states “Danielle Sutton is a good student who works hard to do high quality work. She is always pleasant and gracious both in and out of class. She is a positive person with a sense of humor and a delightful laugh. Nielle has participated in Swanville theater productions since she was in 7th grade. I have so enjoyed watching her skills develop. Nielle dives into a role immediately and works to create a character. This spring in particular, she tackled the challenge of learning an Irish accent and is showing leadership by consistently being in character.

She came to the first read-through of the play with her accent in place. Her determination to do the accent well has been a positive force in the production. She shows leadership not only on the stage but backstage as well. During the fall play Nielle was one of the students who organized the scene changes so that the results performed in front of the audience were professional and efficient. No doubt that will be true for the spring play as well. Danielle Sutton is well deserving of being Swanville’s March senior high student of the month.”

Nielle has many interests including reading, listening to music, singing, spending time with friends and family, playing volleyball and shopping. She plans on attending college, but has yet to choose one. She would like to major in a medical field and possibly also attain a minor in theatre.

Nielle has stayed very active in her school career. She has been a key volleyball player, participating since seventh grade all the way through her senior year. She has been in all theatre productions since entering seventh grade and is currently one of the lead roles in the 4th Annual

spring theatre production. She has been in band since seventh grade and also added choir to her musical endeavors her junior and senior years. She has participated in the Healthy Communities Collaborative since she was a freshman.

She is a two-year veteran of the National Honor Society. Nielle also played softball for a number of years and also participated in speech for three years.

“Nielle is a very patient and understanding person. She will help others in any way that she can. Nielle’s family and background have given her values that are very hard to find in today’s society. I am impressed with her accountability, respectfulness, honesty and other fine attributes. She will bring good wherever she travels. She will be an asset to any astute employer that hires her,” adds Marv Poegel, Physical Education instructor. “I highly regard Nielle as a person. I currently have Nielle in a physical education class and it has been a real pleasure to have someone who is so kind and respectful in class. She always has a wonderful smile on her face and approaches life with positive enthusiasm. She will be successful in life because of all her great attributes. Congratulations to Nielle and her family for this nice honor.”

Nielle was selected as All Conference Honorable Mention this year for volleyball. She has lettered multiple times in volleyball and theatre. She is consistently on the Honor roll and has been nominated for top performer nominations in theatre multiple times.

Nielle’s positive energy does not just stay in school. She was a girl scout for six years. She has volunteered her time and efforts at Share a Meal through the National Honor Society and is a JO volleyball coach for the 13-year-old team this year.

“Be yourself now because it will be harder to find your true self later in life,” is her advice to fellow classmates.

Second, you guys have obviously worked hard and been extremely smart and disciplined with your finances. For someone in your situation, bringing your family together for one of the most important days of the year isn’t foolish on any level. I think it’s awful that you’re even having this conversation with her.

One of my great dreams years ago was to have the ability to do things like that for my family. When I was 22, I worked for a real estate guy who would bring his entire family in from all over the country once a year to go skiing for a week. He and his wife would pay for everything. They would rent a nice chalet, and spend that time having fun as a family and growing closer together. I sort of borrowed that idea a while back. Once a year we’ll take all our kids and their spouses on a nice vacation. We pay for everything, and it’s just one of our gifts to them because we love them.

So, I think your mom is completely wrong. There are three things you can

do with money: spend, save and give.

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month Seventh grader Hailee Schmidt has been chosen as the Swanville Schools March Student of the Month for grades 7-9. She is the daughter of Darrin and Heidi Schmidt. Hailee has started her high school career off well, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball already this year. She also is participating in the theatre production this spring and was in the fall performance.

“Hailee is very respectful towards everyone around her. She always has a smile and a kind word to share. Hailee is a very enjoyable student to have in class,” states math teacher Liza Hasse.

She adds, “Hailee is a very responsible student. She works very hard to be sure each assignment is turned in on time and completed to the best of

Outside of school Hailee is active in church activities. She also participates in Just for Kix, an activity she has enjoyed since age three. She enjoys shopping, swimming, fourwheeling and being with her family.

The Upsala UC-Botics Team was at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities last week for the FIRST Robotics Competition. They competed in a game called Aerial Assist, where they needed to push, kick, pickup and throw a giant yoga ball through some goals for points. The UC-Botics Team placed 34 out of 60 teams. Thought for the week: Minimum wage, new Senate complex are

The topic of minimum wages has been discussed at the Legislature for the past two years. The House passed its version of a bill addressing the subject last year, but was unable to persuade the Senate to go along with its proposal to raise the rate to $9.50 per hour. The legislation got stuck in a conference committee, and that’s where it still sits.

Various reports say the two sides have finally agreed on the $9.50 figure, but negotiations are still ongoing pertaining to other factors, such as how fast the wage scale would ramp up to that amount. However, the biggest obstacle yet to be resolved is House language calling for the minimum wage to be tied to an automatic inflation factor. That’s a classic example of government on autopilot and, in itself, would be a factor that boosts inflation. I have heard from many small business owners who say that an increase of that size would lead to, especially among younger employees, and/or higher retail prices to cover the increased

cost of doing business. I’ve also heard from several who support the increase.

Also underway are negotiations on the proposed new Senate office building and parking ramp, which carries a $90 million price tag. I don’t dispute the need for additional space, especially during the Capital restoration project, but didn’t care for the method in which the building was approved last year. Added to the tax bill in the final days of session, the proposal was never fully debated in the usual method of funding building projects. All that’s needed now for final approval is the okay from the House Rules Committee, which has had one hearing on the topic but has yet to vote on it.

This week marks a transition in scheduling, at least in the House. We have passed the second deadline so most committee work has been completed.

The one that still has much work to do is the powerful Ways and Means Committee, which is the last stop for bills before going to the floor for debate and voting. Floor sessions are scheduled for all five days this week, up from the usual two days when all committees were still

Heard an outstanding speaker last Friday evening, March 28, at the Pope County Corn and Soybean Growers annual meeting. His name is Bruce Vincent, whose family used to run a logging company in Libby, Mont. His hometown is surrounded by 2.5 million acres of national forest, but he says increased regulation from the EPA has made it difficult to stay in business. He called on those of us living in rural America to become more active in promoting our businesses and our way of life. He cited criticism of American agriculture by some environmentalists, but called U.S. farmers “the best in the world” at what they do.

We got a taste of spring last weekend, with Sunday’s high reaching the 50s. But the forecast calling for a blizzard warning the following day brought us quickly back to reality. However, the calendar says that April is here, so things have got to start improving soon … we hope.

“I do not know why God ever made me,” he cried in deep despair. “God has not made you yet,” said his friend. “He is making you and you do not like what is going on.” That story neatly summarizes the tenth Psalm.

Whoever wrote this Psalm was asking the same question. “O Lord, why do you stand so far away? Why do you hide from me when I need you the most?” But is this a question or an accusation? If God is distant or hiding, could there be a reason? What is going on here? Is it God’s doing or the Psalmist’s? Who is responsible for the feelings of isolation or separation? Is it doubt or is it distrust? Or is it neither?

This Psalm does not end where it begins. It concludes with a bold proclamation, “The Lord is King forever and ever!”

And a short time later we read, “Lord You know the hopes of the helpless. Surely You will hear their cries and help them.”

Is God ever absent from the lives of those who look to Him for salvation?

It surely seems so. When the ones who claim they do not need God seem to prosper and we who worship Him are forced to go without, where is He? The author does not speculate about what God is doing nor why He does not respond to our cries immediately. He simply reminds us of the grace of God and that in His time and in His way He will hear us and comfort us. Our faith only grows through adversity.

Dr. Van Gorp receives the Caduceus Award Local Municipality Minutes

Family Medicine Physician Paul Van Gorp, M.D., was selected as this year’s recipient of the Caduceus Award, which recognizes the outstanding work of Central Minnesota physicians who exhibit exceptional humanitarian medical efforts locally or around the world.

Dr. Van Gorp is employed at CentraCare Clinic - Long Prairie and is the 15th recipient to be honored by his peers with this prestigious award. The Caduceus award will be presented to Dr. Van Gorp at the Caduceus Social on May 7.

The Caduceus Society is a philanthropic guild of CentraCare Health Foundation. Established in 2000, the society is open to all members of medical staffs at Central Minnesota hospitals or surgical centers who make a commitment of $10,000 or more to support the mission of improving health and health care in Central Minnesota. The Caduceus Society has 133 members.

“Dr. Van Gorp brings passion, wisdom and humanity to his work as a clinician, teacher and health advocate, and he imparts these qualities to his colleagues, community and students he teaches,” said CentraCare Health - Long Prairie Administrator Dan Swenson. “Dr. Van Gorp is an influential, well-respected leader in the Long Prairie community. He is extremely committed to the well-being of the Long Prairie community and to each and every one of his patients.”

As a physician in Long Prairie for 38 years, Dr. Van Gorp was instrumental in developing the Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) Program beginning in 1993. The CALS course is designed to help care providers in rural and remote sites, with limited specialty and technological support, improve quality of care when life-threatening medical emergencies occur. Training was developed for whole teams to be confident and competent to deal with trauma situations that may not be encountered often. CentraCare Health Long Prairie became the first accredited CALS Hospital.

Dr. Van Gorp continues to be very involved and passionate about CALS. He spends many hours each week continuing to develop this program for rural communities and for communities around the world. CALS Program is proud to have a contract with U.S. Department of State to provide emergency training to the U.S. embassy medical personnel around the globe. Currently the chair of the CALS Board of Directors, Dr. Van Gorp is a certified CALS instructor and travels throughout Minnesota and Canada to teach CALS. Dr. Van Gorp has served as a preceptor for medical students, family medicine residency and advanced practice providers since 1976. He has positively impacted and influenced over 150 of today’s practicing providers. Although teaching students is an added time commitment, Dr. Van Gorp finds this teaching role fulfilling in many ways.

“It’s just wonderful to watch these young people become compassionate, competent and confident family physicians,” Dr. Van Gorp said.

In his pursuit of continuous improvement and excellent care for his patients, Dr. Van Gorp is currently working on implementing a new care model project, Team Based Care, at CentraCare Health - Long Prairie. His goals with this program are to improve the quality of care delivered while increasing access for patients and improved overall clinic efficiency.

“Paul has been my partner for over 20 years,” Family Medicine Physician Rene Eldidy, MD, CentraCare Clinic Long Prairie. “To see his passion and dedication for his patients, the education of students and the community continue to be as strong as when I first met him, is inspiring for those of us who are lucky enough to work with him. Dr. Van Gorp volunteers one Saturday each month at Project H.E.A.L (Health, Education, Access, Link), offering free health screenings and basic care for those with little or no insurance. About 90 percent of his patients at Project H.E.A.L are from the large Amish community that lives in the area.

The Amish community can be hesitant to use modern-day health care, but Dr. Van Gorp has, over many years of delicate conversations and actions, earned the trust of the Amish community. The Amish contact Dr. Van Gorp whenever they need assistance, many times after hours.

In 2013, Dr. Van Gorp received the Exemplary Teaching Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians. From the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians, he received Family Physician of the Year in 2003; Merit Award in 2004; and Teacher of the Year in 2012.

Simply put, the changing day lengths are sensed by the eyes, which send this message via the optic nerve to the pineal gland located at the base of the brain. The declining day length in late fall and early winter causes a decrease in testosterone, which results in antler shedding. The actual process of antler shedding involves the formation of a thin layer of tissue destruction that forms between the antler and the pedicle, called the abscission layer. The degeneration of the bone-tobone bond between the antler and the pedicle is considered to be the fastest deterioration of living tissue known in the animal kingdom.

American white pelicans are among the world’s largest birds and are easily recognized in flight. Wingspans up to 9 feet, bright white plumage with blackedged wings and large, orange bills distinguish them from any other species.

“Pelicans often fly in evenly spaced lines or V formations,” said Lisa Gelvin-Innvaer, regional nongame wildlife specialist. “Unlike swans or geese which fly with necks outstretched, pelicans fly with their necks doubled back against their shoulders. They often set up a rhythmic pattern of wing beats that ripple from the lead bird back to the end.”

American white pelicans were driven to near extinction in the early 20th century from human pressures, according to the DNR. There were no reports of nesting pelicans in Minnesota for 90 years, from 1878 until 1968.

Conservation efforts and federal regulations have helped pelican populations make a slow and steady comeback. “The prairie pothole region of western Minnesota hosts 22 percent of the global population of this species,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. An estimated 22,000 pairs of pelicans nest at 16 sites on seven lakes across the state.

American white pelicans leave Minnesota each fall as lakes and rivers freeze. They winter along the Gulf Coast from Florida to Mexico and typically return to Minnesota in early spring, as

lakes and rivers thaw.

They are highly social and live in large, dense colonies. They feed exclusively on small fish and crustaceans and will work together for a meal.

“A group of pelicans will swim in a semicircle to herd their prey into shallow water,” Gelvin-Innvaer said. “Then they’ll scoop up fish and water in their beak pouch, drain out the water and swallow their food.”

Pelicans are popular among wildlife watchers. Gelvin-Innvaer advises that the birds are best enjoyed from a distance. “Pelican colonies are vulnerable to human disturbance and contact should be minimized.”
