Knock down imaginary walls -By Harvey Mackay In a research experiment, a marine biologist placed a shark into a large holding tank and then released several small bait fish into the tank.

The shark quickly swam around the tank, attacked and ate the smaller fish.

The marine biologist then inserted a strong piece of clear plexiglass into the tank, with the shark on one side and a new set of bait fish on the other. The shark attacked, slamming into the plexiglass divider over and over.

The fish swam around unharmed in their section. After about an hour, the shark gave up, according to this story from “Bits & Pieces.”

Over the next few weeks, the shark made fewer attempts to attack the fish, until it stopped attacking altogether. When the marine biologist removed the divider, the shark didn’t attack. It believed a barrier existed between it and the bait fish, so the fish swam wherever they wished, free from harm.

I love shark stories … is it any wonder why? But how many imaginary barriers do you see separating you and what you really want?

Many of us create barriers for a variety of reasons. Maybe we were trained that way

and need to reprogram ourselves. We don’t think we have options. We don’t want to take chances or rock the boat. Or it could be that we simply don’t want to do something, so we create doubt.

If we try something and fail, is that a reason not to try it again some time later?

Things change. We change. That’s not an excuse to give up on something.

I wrote a column years ago about the late Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University who learned he had pancreatic cancer. He gave a final upbeat speech, eventually viewed by millions, titled “The Last Lecture.” In it he said: “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how bad we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it bad enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”

But brick walls get knocked down every day. When you know that what you want is on the other side, and you want it more than you want anything else, you go looking for a sledgehammer that can knock holes through it.

I think of the challenging times when I was starting my company, or when the envelope business seemed to be on the brink of extinction, or when a civic project I was heading up hit a roadblock. It would have been easier to give up. But then I would have to live with my decision to quit rather than persevere. Could I overcome that disappointment?

So who says that you can’t accomplish your goals? Who says that you’re not tougher and better and smarter and harder working and more able than your competition? It doesn’t matter if they say you can’t do it. The only thing that matters is if you say it. As we all know, if we believe in ourselves, there’s hardly anything that we can’t accomplish.

That shark would have been wiser had it heeded the words of Oprah Winfrey, whose career had plenty of bumps as she started in television: “Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again.

Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire. This is your moment.

Own it.”

Surviving a setback is more tolerable if you step back and review your goal. Get some perspective on the direction you need to take when you recover from this stumble.

When I have doubts, I always remember the famous words of Thomas Edison, perhaps the greatest American inventor of 1,093 revolutionary technologies, who said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

He also insisted, “Sticking to it is the genius! Any other bright-minded fellow can accomplish just as much if he will stick like hell and remember nothing that’s any good works by itself . . . I’ll never give up, for I may have a streak of luck before I die.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Spring Duties

It’s starting to look like spring will be here in a few days.

We now have had snow fall on the robin’s back on three different occasions, so that is a definite sign.

This weather change encourages some of us who came from the farm to think about what we, as farm kids, would be doing in this weather. It’s fun to look back, but if we were to actually again be doing those jobs, it would probably cause serious physical discomfort. That’s why as the years move along, we need to think long and seriously about a project before starting it.

I think that the two easiest spring jobs were cutting potatoes for seed and putting oats through the fanning mill.

Some people seed potatoes using a whole potato. I have never planted a whole potato, but Pa said that practice caused too many sprouts. We cut the potatoes so that there were two eyes on each cut piece. There may not be any basis to my thoughts, but I wonder if cutting seed potatoes may be another result of conservative thinking. With cut potatoes, one could plant 4 or 5 plants, but one whole potato only creates one plant.

One final consideration is that when planting the potato pieces in the ground, it’s possible to plant with the eyes upward so they can see where they are growing.

The fanning mill blew out the weed and lighter weight seeds by blowing air through the falling seeds. This allowed the drill to plant the best seeds for a stronger plant growth. Of course the rejected matter was loaded in a grain tub, put on the back of the pickup and run through the hammer mill to become ground feed for the cows. The cows didn’t complain, but their grain supplement probably tasted like empty oat hulls for the next week.

So now it’s also the time to plow the fields that were not able to be plowed before the freeze-up the previous fall. Once that was completed, all of the fields needed to be worked with a disk harrow, with the oats fields being worked first, since the oats were planted before the corn. The fields to be planted to oats were now worked at an angle with a drag.

Now comes the most dusty, unproductive job, the rock picking. The oats fields were usually picked with a manure fork or silage fork. They were then moved to the rock pile and the wagon was emptied.

The job was backbreaking, but if the oats field was also being planted to alfalfa, care must be taken to remove as many of the rocks as possible, to avoid getting rocks in the hay-making machinery next year. If the field, like some of our fields had a lot of rocks, a packer was run over the field to try to push down any rocks that escaped the

rock picking. Dad would say that picking rocks didn’t make money, but if you are a connoisseur of rock piles, you now have more beauty to appreciate.

Now you notice those new piles of dirt on the field. Some of them are only as big as a cow pie, but sometimes a really productive pocket gopher will pile a wash-tub of dirt on your beautiful, level field.

The only solution we used was trapping them. Sometimes the smarter, older gophers would discover the trap and pack it full of dirt. More traps and soon even the smart ones would mistakenly get a foot in the trap. The dog was first in line to dispatch the gopher. Once the gopher was gone, a hand rake was used to attempt to level the dirt.

Fire: April 22, 2021: At 1:52 p.m. Avon Police Chief Corey Nellis noticed black smoke south of town. He went to 17010 Norman Rd. in Avon Township and located a fire in a wooded area at this address. When he got out of his squad car to speak with the landowner, he could hear someone yelling for help and went to locate the person. He was able to find the landowner lying on the ground and saw that the ground around him was also on fire. Chief Nellis quickly advised the Stearns County Communications Center that he needed assistance urgently, as he was unable to get to the homeowner and move him out of the area of the fire.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Avon Police Department, MN State Patrol, Avon Fire and Albany Fire were summoned to the scene. Once additional help was at the site the homeowner, James Dean, 73, was rescued from the area of the fire. He was later transported to the St. Cloud Hospital with burns to his legs and arms. Mr. Dean was able to let deputies know that the fire started when he was burning a small pile of sicks and he lost control of it. A trailer on the property used for storage was extensively damaged during the fire, along with some minor damage to the residence and several acres of groundcover were also burned.

Gladys F. Kass

Gladys F. Kass, age 76 of Richmond, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at Assumption C o m m u n i t y Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota after suffering a massive stroke.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Gladys will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday, May 7 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday, May 8 at the church.

Gladys Kass was born July 14, 1944 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Amanda (Klasen) Klaphake. She grew up on the family farm north of Melrose. She was united in marriage to O.J. Spanier on September 5, 1966

Virgil Joseph Burg

Virgil Joseph Burg passed away peacefully on April 22, 2021, at the Long Prairie Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimers.

Funeral mass was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala on April 26th, with Father David Grundman as celebrant.

Virgil was born on December 7, 1933 to Leo and Clara (Schaefer) Burg. His love of farming started at the farm he was raised on, which was near St. Martin.

Virgil married Rose Gerads in St. Anthony, on May 9, 1962. After working in the granite quarries of Cold Spring for a few years, he was able to return to dairy farming and also raised

Robert G. “Bob” Welters, age 97 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Robert George Welters was born March 12, 1924 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Reinhard and Mary (Beckers) Welters. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Bernice Wehlage on September 23, 1947 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove. In his earlier years, Bob was one of the first members of the Melrose Area Ambulance Corp. Bob was employed by Kraft Foods in Melrose until his retirement in 1988. He owned and operated Welters Turkey Farm. Bob enjoyed beekeeping and was a Minnesota State Beekeeper Inspector

in Melrose. From this union, she was blessed with two children, Stacy and Darin. On June 29, 1989, she married Richard Kass in Circle Pines. Gladys worked various jobs and was a go getter. Her last job was at Donaldson Corp in Bloomington, Minnesota, retiring in 2008.

Gladys enjoyed shopping, traveling, camping, gardening, reading, and hosting many family functions. She was the family counselor and “matriarch” of the family; always there to listen and take charge. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband, Richard “Dick” Kass of Richmond; children, Stacy (Michael) Katzovitz of St. Louis Park, Darin Spanier of Maple Grove, Adam (Amy) Kass of Lakeville, and Andy (Diane) Kass of Woodbury; six grandchildren, Mason Kass, Benjamin Katzovitz, Rachel Katzovitz, Rylie Kass, Sawyer Kass, and Coenraad Kass; brothers and sisters, Marion “Mike” (Lyn) Klaphake, Gloria Schneider (Darrell Schweigert), Allen “Butch” (Carol) Klaphake, Joyce (Bruce) Hauser, Mark (Nancy) Klaphake, Samuel “Sam” (Sandy) Klaphake, and Sandra “Sandy” (Alan) Niehoff.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Amanda Klaphake; and brother-in-law, Roman Schneider.

Virgil and Rose farmed for nearly 50 years near Upsala, before turning the farm over to their son, Allen. In his later years, he enjoyed sitting on the deck, watching the antics of the chickens as they grazed around the yard.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Rose, and children: Ken (Marlene) of New York Mills; Karen (Loran) Wolbeck of Grey Eagle; Shirley (Marvin) Wensmann of Upsala; Cindy (Kevin) Banks of St. Cloud, and Allen of Upsala. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and siblings: Ramona (Bernard) Stang, Marilyn Neary, Beatrice (Ken) Schmidt, David Burg, Dennis (Wynn) Burg, Victor (Evie) Burg, Victoria Burg, and Harvey (Jan) Burg.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Clara Burg, his mother and father-in-law, Nick and Dora Gerads, brotherin-law, Don Neary, sister-in-law Sharon Burg, and God-son, Daniel Wielenberg.

Arrangements were with Miller Carlin Funeral Home. for many years.

Bob was a devout Catholic and member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Post 101, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters, and former member of St. Mary’s School board.

He enjoyed raising poultry and cattle on his hobby farm, gardening, doing puzzles, going for walks, reading and an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He was a hard worker who loved his family and enjoyed visits from his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Kenneth (Wanda) Welters of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Karen (Jeffrey) Kerfeld of St. Rosa, Dale (Jamie) Welters of Bloomington, Daniel Welters of Melrose, and Polly Jaeger of Roseville; 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren with one on the way in June; sister-in-law, Rosina Welters of Swanville; and beloved Wehlage inlaws.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Welters on November 27, 2009; parents, Reinhard and Mary Welters; parentsin-law, Henry and Mary Wehlage; infant twin brother, Martin; brothers, Herman, Lawrence, and Albert Welters; sisters, Helen Wiener, Hildegard Frieler, Rosie Gregory, Judy Essler; and beloved Wehlage in-laws.

Brian “BT” Toenyan

Brian loved spending time with family and friends and being at the cabin with bonfires. He also looked forward to deer hunting with his hunting party. His heart was huge and soft. If he had a penny, he would give you a nickel. Brian was always looking out for people he knew. He had a heart of gold and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his parents, Gary and Sandy Toenyan of Melrose; brother-in-law, Mark Fiedler of Sauk Centre; nephew and Godchild, Adam Fiedler (Becky Klaphake) of Alexandria; niece, Kirsten Fiedler (Anthony Santana) of South Minneapolis; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Brian was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Fiedler in 2018; grandparents, Justin and Darlene Toenyan and Ralph and Jennie Moore; and cousin, Taylor Toenyan in 2016.

In 2005, a job opportunity to manage Malecha Dairy brought the family back to Minnesota. Since 2012, Greg has been working as a Dairy Technical Specialist for Vita Plus, a company out of Wisconsin.

Greg loved learning new things. He had a very strong work ethic and would hold anyone to that standard, including his wife, daughter, and co-workers. He enjoyed hunting, raising Texas Long Horns, sharing his Catholic faith, and making prayer pamphlets with traditional catholic prayers. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Wiener of Sauk Centre; daughter, Elizabeth Wiener of Sauk Centre; mother, Marjorie Wiener of Long Prairie; sisters and brothers, Michele (Paul) Ruegemer of Browerville, Jeff (Jenny) Wiener of Albany, Chris (Beth) Wiener of Waseca, Pat (Kristy) Wiener of Osakis, Mike (Amber) Wiener of Long Prairie, Tim (Jen) Wiener of St. Cloud, Maria (Mike) Ferschweiler of Foley, Theresa (Darik) Booth of Eden Valley, Jeremy Wiener of Long Prairie; and many nieces and nephews.

Gregory E. “Greg” Wiener, age 53, of Sauk Centre, passed away after a short battle with cancer on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre.

A Requiem Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, April 30 at the Marthaler Shed (10098 County Road 11, Sauk Centre 56378) with Rev. David Hewko officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre. A lunch will be served immediately following the Mass at the Marthaler Shed for those not going to the cemetery.

Gregory Edward Wiener was born November 3, 1967 in Princeton, Minnesota to Arnold and Marjorie (Schmidt) Wiener. He was the oldest of ten. At the age of 18, he worked for his dad at Wiener-Merten Contracting. Greg was united in marriage to Martha Ruegemer on November 28, 1987 at Pius V Chapel in Albany, Minnesota. After their marriage, Greg furthered his education in the fall of 1993 by attending Pine Technical College in Pine City, Minnesota for gun smithing. While in college and working full time, Greg was offered an opportunity to help with a new startup of a new plant in Amery, Wisconsin. Greg and Martha moved to Wisconsin in 1995 where Greg worked as plant

Jean L. Hellermann

Jean L. Hellermann, age 71 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Vince Lieser concelebrating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Jean Louise Primus was born January 15, 1950 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to James and Florence (Meier) Primus. She was a teacher at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Melrose. She was united in marriage to Michael Hellermann on July 10, 1976 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Freeport, Minnesota. The couple farmed north of Melrose. Jean later became a paraprofessional at the Melrose Area School.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Jean had a strong will, a caring heart, and always put the comfort of others before herself. She was known for ice cream socials and her immense gift of gab.

She enjoyed cooking enough food to feed an

army for family functions. Always the host, Jean made sure any company had something to eat. And she so, so loved spending time with her grandchildren; playing cards and games and always being the teacher in God, life and love to them. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Michael Hellermann of Melrose; children, James Hellermann of Upsala, Nancy (Shawn) Duevel of New Munich, Ronald (Michelle Rademacher) Hellermann of Melrose, and Andrew (Jackie) Hellermann of Upsala; grandchildren, Madison, Gabrielle, Elijah, Allison, Parker, and one on the way; sisters and brothers, Arlene Primus of Minneapolis, Lyla (Ken) Olafson of Cedar, Arlene (Urban) Beuning of Melrose, Michael (Judy) Kluempke of Somerset, Kentucky, Gary (Bonnie) Kluempke of McKinney, Texas, Don (Sharon) Kluempke of Melrose, Mary Kay (Gerard) Huhne of St. Joseph, Carol (Mark) Stangler of St. Cloud, and Amy (Ken) Stangler of Blaine.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

Newly re-elected officers were sworn in before the meeting.

To start the reorganizational meeting Sup. Muellner made a motion to appoint Mike Berscheit as chair.

Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Sup. Muellner made a motion to appoint Bruce Johnson as vice-chair.

Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motions passed.

The minutes from the regular meeting of February 23, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

For correspondence the township received letters about asphalt repair, signs ad, and notifications of no in-person county weed inspection training and no in-person county township association meeting this year due to COVID restrictions.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6064 through 6080: Rev. $2,534.41; R & B $1,608.10. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to keep wages of the treasurer, supervisors, clerk and hourly wages the same as last year. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to have the Burtrum Bell Bulletin Board as the official posting site and Long Prairie Leader as the official newspaper. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to keep gopher bounty at $2 per tail for gophers caught in Burnhamville Township. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Sup. Johnson made a motion to set gas mileage for township business the same as IRS rates. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motions passed.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 3, 2021 at Trinity Lutheran Church for Gladys Ida Miller, age 85, of Long Prairie. The Rev. Noah Wehrspann will officiate, and burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services at the church on Monday.

Gladys was born September 25, 1935 in Round Prairie Township, MN to August and Ernestine (Neuman) Knaak. She married Melvin Miller on June 25, 1953 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Long Prairie Township. The couple farmed West of Long Prairie where they raised five children. In 1985 they retired from farming and, starting a second career, Gladys became a Home Health Aid working for Todd County. The board set April 15 at 3 pm to start the annual road inspection where board will drive the township roads with the contractor to note where improvements need to be made.

Road maintenance contract bids were viewed.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the contracts for class 5 gravel, dust control, and road blading from Herdering, Inc. for 2021. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor is working on getting bogs in the road settled and will watch frost boils.

The board will monitor culvert issues. The board suggested doing dust control on all of Dunlin Road and 331st Ave. again.

The clerk noted light election turnout of only 14 voters and no big issues at annual meeting.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $89,379.84.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Muellner seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner.

Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, April 27 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center. Board will also meet to do road inspection on April 15.

Stearns Electric 84th Annual Drive-In Meeting

Stearns Electric Association hosts its 84th Annual Meeting on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the Stearns County Fairgrounds in Sauk Centre. The meeting will be a drive-in event beginning at 7 p.m. All member-consumers of Stearns Electric are invited to attend. Gates open at 6 p.m. and in-person voting begins for members in Cooperative districts 3, 4, 5 and 9. took part in Bible studies. She also volunteered for many years at the local Food Shelf and even served as the Co-Chair for a time. When not volunteering she spent many hours in her own sewing room creating beautiful quilts for each of her children and grandchildren, which they cherish.

However busy she may have been, she always had time for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who each held a special place in her heart. Her grandchildren have fond memories of their times fishing and camping in the RV with grandma and grandpa. The grandkids looked forward to Christmas Day Bingo with Grandma and all her fun prizes. Everyone who knew Gladys will miss her sense of humor, quick wit and the twinkle in her eye when she got you with a good zinger.

She is survived by four sons Loren (Celeste), Wally (Lorie) both of Long Prairie, Brian (Emily) of Tucson, AZ and Brent (Laura) of Andover, MN and daughter Laurie (Rick) Torgerud of Chattanooga, TN and two sisters Margaret Collin of El Cajon, CA, and Dorothea Finseth of Blaine, MN and 24 grand and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Melvin, an infant brother and her sister Elaine Marthaler.

Budget bills making their way to House floor Last week’s action on the House floor was marked by a series of marathon sessions dealing with setting the state’s upcoming two-year budget.

Usual start time was 10 o’clock in the morning, with last action several nights coming around midnight.

All the major spending bills, including the tax bill, were debated and passed off the floor, with one exception. That being the Health and Human Services bill, which was slated for action on Monday of this week.

In floor votes taken on the various measures, most were divided along party lines.

Even the agriculture bill, usually one of the most non-partisan, was split with no Republicans voting in favor. The reason was that, although the spending portion of the bill was OK, the policy provisions were worrisome.

Things like a total revamping of the Board of Animal Health and how the state’s veterinarian is selected were not popular with some.

The board has done outstanding work in the past, especially in regard to their handling of the highly pathogenic bird flu several years ago, and there is reluctance to adding certain members to the board and removing the Senate’s ability to confirm appointments.

There were also issues with the state getting into requiring additional labeling requirements for seed treated with insecticides that no other state requires. In addition, changes stretching out the timeline in the Farmer Lender mediation process were approved. In the past, when modifications to this program were proposed, a working group was convened to study the issues before changes were made.

The tax bill passed in the House contains conformity in regard to PPP loans, but only up to $350,000. It also contains several tax increases, including a new fifth tier income bracket, which would give our state the second highest income tax rate in the nation.

A change in the funding of Soil and Water Conservation Districts came forward in the environment bill. In the past, a major funding source for SWCDs has been the Clean Water Fund, one of the accounts funded by the three-eighths of 1 percent sales tax we all pay. In the second year of the biennium, this new funding source relies on a surcharge on all deed transfers in each county, with that revenue going directly to the local

There was much opposition to this plan, but it was passed in the House anyway.

Things such as what is the connection between real estate transfers and SWCDs, and the disparity of funding that will probably arise from such a system. For example, there are many more transfers in metro counties than in Greater Minnesota, and some counties may choose not to collect this new fee at all. My hope is the plan will be discarded in conference committee and we’ll revert back to Clean Water funding for our SWCDs, which do an outstanding job of getting conservation work done on the local level.

The most contentious discussion came during debate on the public safety bill. With the backdrop of the metro area on high alert, there were provisions in this bill calling for additional regulations on our law enforcement. Another removes expired license tabs from the list of primary violations that allow police to stop a vehicle. One obvious question raised was how many more residents won’t bother to renew their tabs in a timely fashion if they can’t be stopped for not having them current.

Republicans tried to amend provisions onto legislation that would have stopped our state’s move to California car standards, but they were not allowed. We also tried to add language that would allow for mail-in application for conceal-and-carry permits because of the backlog in some counties resulting in long wait-times, but that, too, was not allowed.

These bills will all come back for final passage when conference committees have worked out the differences between the House and Senate versions.

Norma Jean Fox

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date for Norma Jean Fox, 84, of Long Prairie who passed away on April 20, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Norma was born on February 27, 1937 to Harry and Ella (Gronseth) Lunder in Murdock, MN. After graduating from High School, she worked in several secretarial positions before securing a position at Gopher Machine and Engineering in Minneapolis which is where she worked the longest. This is also where she met Robert “Bob” Fox who she married on June 24, 1995. The couple moved to Long Prairie shortly after they were married and Norma worked for Kraft Cheese in Melrose.

Norma was very adventurous and loved to travel. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her laughter was contagious. She adored animals. The birds and squirrels in her neighborhood were fed well and her cats were treated as her babies. Number 24, Jeff Gordon, was her hero on the racetrack and she set alarms to watch the Big Joe Polka Show.

Norma’s faith was very important to her. She was active at her church, American Lutheran and loved attending church retreats.

Norma will be dearly missed by her husband Bob of Long Prairie; Son Keith (Cherri) French of Fridley; Daughter Lorelei French of New Hope; son Robert Strausbaugh of Pheonix, AZ and stepson Scott (Shelley) Fox of Hudson, WI; brothers Lowell (Joy Rud) Lunder of Loveland, CO, Harlow (Helen) Lunder of Little Canada; sisters Audrey Rudnick of Wilmar, Carole Swanson of North Branch and Harriette Nelson of Montrose, CO. and fourteen grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sons Monte French and Kevin Sibell and sisters Arlene Nelson, Lucille Wiegmann and Joan Swanson.

If you’re planning to have kids soon, I’d recommend going the single family route—specifically because of the quality of life. Looking at the other side, you’ll make money with a multi-family construction, but it’ll probably be a pain in the butt. You’ll be giving up some things if you go that route.

Let me put it this way, Joel. I’ve owned a ton of investment real estate in my life, and my wife didn’t want to live in any of those properties. Still, there’s nothing inherently wrong with either decision. Just make sure your mortgage is a 15-year, fixed rate loan, and the monthly payments are no more than 25 percent of your combined take home pay.

Save up for a down payment of at least 20 percent to avoid PMI, too.

Take a hard look at the numbers, and make sure you and your wife have a long, long talk about everything. You two should be in complete agreement about every aspect of this situation before moving forward!

Dear Motor Medics, I am having a problem with my lights on my 2000 Ford Taurus. Both the front and rear lights have water in them.

The rear looks like a bathroom mirror after a hot shower on both sides and the front has water collected towards the bottom of the driver side headlight. When the weather is dry for long periods they will clear up, but if I wash the car or it rains once they fog right back up. The bulbs themselves seem to be working ok and this has gone on for a couple of years. What can I do to fix this? I just don’t like the way it looks.

-Pat in Larchwood, Iowa Dear Pat, Many vehicles have this issue. The moisture comes from the seal around the plastic lens leaking where it is bonded to the inside light reflector housing. During hot sunny days, the heat generated by the sun will break down the seal and moisture will occur. In some cases, the lens will separate completely from the reflector. We have seen people try many things to repair their existing lights but usually the most effective fix is to replace the assembly. Check several places for the best deal. Auto recycling facilities, the dealer, and auto parts stores usually carry the assemblies. Once you find a good light at a reasonable cost, you could possibly install them yourself. You will want to have the front aimed by a professional though.

-Devon in Vandalia, Missouri Dear Devon, You can switch all the fluids over to synthetics but do not expect a huge gain in mileage. If you have all conventional oils now and were to change everything in the drivetrain over, you may see a slight increase in the highway mileage, and you will help extend the life of any parts that are not already worn severely. The oil itself should not hurt your vehicle but you must stick with the factory approved type. On some older vehicles changing may result in leaks. Consult with your dealer to be sure.

Synthetics don’t break down as fast as conventional oils and they hold their viscosity more consistently which is the main boost for the mileage. Changing over to synthetics can be expensive so if you do it you may want to change one at a time when that service comes due.

The St. Wendel Saints hosted a memorial game in honor of Aaron Welle with the Opole Bears on April 17th. Aaron passed away this spring from a tragic work accident. Aaron was a 2020 graduate of Holdingford High School and a member of the Saints baseball team. He was their right fielder. During the first inning the right field was left open in his memory. A sign has been placed on the fence in right field. He wore number 13 and both teams wore his number during the game. After the game the Saints retired his number.

Many of the players had played sports with him or against him. Aaron was a great friend, classmate and teammate. He will be missed by all. Submitted by Gina Boeckermann.
