Sailing the Cs of life -By Harvey Mackay I wrote a chapter in my recent book – “You Haven’t Hit Your Peak Yet!” – on “The Seven Cs of Success.”

They included: clarity, competence, constraints, concentration, creativity, courage and continuous learning.

A reader sent me a very fitting quote from Zig Ziglar: “The three Cs of life: choices, chances, changes. You must make a choice to take a chance or your life will never change.”

Who would have known there were so many Cs to help sail through life? And I have listed several more: Curious. Curiosity is one of nature’s greatest gifts. The old saying, “You learn something new every day,” should be taken very seriously. Be curious about everything around you. The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it and turn it inside out. Let curiosity turn “I don’t know” into “I want to find out.”

Commitment. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results. Commitment is a prerequisite to success. Commitment is the state of being bound – emotionally, intellectually or both – to a course of action. Commitment starts

with a choice and is sustained by dedication and perseverance.

Competition.

The breakfast of champions is competition. Competition has made me a better businessman, a better golfer and a better person. And when there isn’t another company or business to compete with, I try to outdo myself. If that sounds simple, well, it is. I always want to be at my best and show my best side.

Communication. The most basic yet crucial life skill is communication. From time to time, re-evaluate your performance in these fundamental areas: speaking, listening, writing, leading meetings and resolving conflict. Communication needs to be clear and understandable.

Communication requires both effective sending and receiving. No one can succeed in business, or in life, for that matter, without developing good communication skills.

Consistent. Don’t be resistant to being consistent. If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it. Consistency is especially important in business. Consistency establishes reputations. In any business, customers expect the same standards. They want predictability.

Compassion. Compassionate people really care. Compassionate people are also more positive. That’s why you should practice compassion every day of your life.

Helping someone up won’t pull you down.

Caring is contagious. Help spread it around. People don’t care how much you know about them once they realize how much you care about them. This concept

is so important I made it the theme of my first book, “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.” It’s also central to my Mackay 66 Customer Profile. Learn as much about your customers and suppliers as you possibly can because you can’t talk about business all your life. Build those relationships and take it from a business level to a personal level.

Customers. Nothing is more important than customer service. No customer service, and pretty soon, no customers. The key is to latch onto your customers and hold them fast. Don’t just meet their needs. Anticipate them. Don’t wait for them to tell you there’s a problem. Go out and ask them if there’s a problem. They are your most important focus group. Disappoint customers and they’ll disappear.

Charisma. Some people walk into a room and all heads turn. When they begin to speak, people are mesmerized.

They instantly gain respect and trust. In a word, they have charisma, one of the most desirable and enviable qualities in the world. Charisma is hard to define, but it is many things, such as likeability on steroids.

Charm. My mother used to tell me that you could catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. When I finally understood what she was talking about, I realized that our personalities often determine the outcome of situations. Charm is what you bring out in other people because you are

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Swan River

In past articles I have made reference to the Swan River.

The Swan River originates from Big Swan Lake in Todd County and meanders in an easterly direction to it’s destination at the west side of the Mississippi River on the south edge of Little Falls. The Swan River, like many other smaller rivers, consists of many changes of direction in it’s travel toward the final destination.

A smaller river needs to create it’s course by flowing around dirt bumps, rocks and hills which are in it’s path. Larger rivers have sufficient water force to either eliminate or remove natural obstructions in it’s path. Remember that a river is water seeking to move from a higher location to a lower location. When the first drops of water have found a path to a lower level more water will follow.

The Swan River, has for hundreds of years, been a navigable river. The water level may become lower in summer months, but is able to allow canoe or kayak travel during the warm months. The Indians frequently traveled on the Swan River. Their means of travel consisted mainly of walking or canoe travel. Canoe travel allowed the canoe to carry the load weight that would be a burden to carry on their back over longer distances.

As had been mentioned in earlier articles, I as a young kid, trapping the neighbor’s pocket gophers, came to know a very old gentleman who lived on Swan Lake during his lifetime (this would go back about 140 years). He remembered the

Indians camping across the lake from their farm while on a trip to Big Birch Lake, or Birchbark Lake, as I believe it was called at that time. Their travel had started on the Mississippi River in Northern Minnesota.

The purpose of the trip was to trade food and furs with other Indians who had traveled from other locations to Birchbark Lake.

After their trading was completed, they again canoed back to the Swan River, the Mississippi and their tribal location.

Today travel on the Swan River is again being developed. A group of residents in the Swanville area have removed some of the fallen trees from the river so that those in today’s world can experience the joy of the historic river ride. Kayak and canoe rentals are available. The current beginning of the river trip is at the dam in Pillsbury, Minnesota and goes about 7 miles to a location North of Swanville, Minnesota.

The trip includes travel through swamp areas, heavily wooded areas and areas for just relaxing on the river.

Future plans include a cleanup of the waterway to Sobieski, Minnesota, which will extend the trip by another 17 miles.

When this has been completed, future plans include extending the trail another 7 (?) miles to the Mississippi River. The project has been supported by the DNR, Swanville Lions Club and local citizens.

At a time when our industrious natures are continually eliminating the natural beauty in our area, there is an effort to keep some of the good things for us to enjoy.

Each year, communities across the country revisit the history of the victims’ rights movement, celebrate the progress made, and recommit to further advancements in the crime victims field. April 18-24, 2021 is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. A time to raise awareness about crime victims’ issues and rights and introduce the community to the important resources and services available.

Crash: April 11, 2021: At approximately 1:56 PM, responded to a roll over crash near the intersection of County Road 12 and Fitz Rd. It was learned that a Nissan Sentra, driven by a juvenile female, was traveling eastbound on County Rd. 12 when it left the roadway, causing it to roll several times. The driver was transported to the Long Prairie Hospital by the Long PrairieAmbulance with minor injuries. Joseph J. Seifermann

Joseph J. “Joe” Seifermann, age 86 of Spring Hill, died peacefully on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at Assumption C o m m u n i t y Nursing Home in Cold Spring, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Saturday at the church in Spring Hill.

Sally Jane Zimmerman

Sally Jane Zimmerman, age 74 of Melrose, passed away one day after her 58th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private service will be held due to the coronavirus.

Sally Jane Kendall was born October 28, 1946 in Duluth, Minnesota to Earl and Mildred (Colwell) Kendall. Sally grew up in Knife River and Two Harbors. In 1963, she married Terry “T.Z.” Zimmerman and in 1971, they moved to Melrose. Sally worked at the Meadowlark

Joseph Joseph Seifermann was born March 27, 1935 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Martin and Anna (Eichers) Seifermann. He farmed all his life on the family farm. After his dad passed away, he continued to take care of his mom on the home place. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and helping his neighbors with driving tractor.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s Men’s Society in Spring Hill.

Survivors include his brother, Al Seifermann of New London; sisters-in-law, Louise Seifermann of St. Cloud and Jane Seifermann of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers, Loretta Seifermann, Sylvester, Margaret Dingmann, Roman, Herbert, Celestine, Theresa Wuertz, and Martin Jr.; and niece, Mary Ann Dingmann.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Country Club for 25 years. In doing so, she met many of her long-time friends. She adored her family to the fullest. Sally was a family-oriented mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who looked forward to the annual family reunion at her cabin on Lake Superior in Grand Portage.

Survivors include her loving husband, Terrell “TZ” Zimmerman; daughter, Teri Jean “TJ” (John) Hessburg; sons, Trent (Jessie) Zimmerman, Troy (Linda) Zimmerman, and Travis (Linda) Zimmerman; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Janet (Mert) Larson; brothers, Earl (Lori) Kendall and Rod (Wendy) Falk; and many nieces and nephews.

Sally was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Judy; and grandson, Takoda Zimmerman.

To know her was to love her.

Survivors include her children, Audrae (Larry) Weber, Doug (Judy) Streit, Peggy Streit all of Avon; grandchildren, Waylon Weber, Stacy Brown, Jeff Streit and Pat Streit.

She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Camden & Chase Weber, McKenzie & Emily Streit, Zachary & Colton Brown.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Patty, siblings, Elmer, Daniel “Donny”, and Stanley Korneck, Gladys Morgel and David Withers. owner of Apollo 13, a bar and restaurant. He is a member of the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Elmer is survived by his brothers and sisters, Ambrose (Kathleen) Gertken, St. Joseph; Donna Mae (Wilbert) Poepping, Avon; Annette Blonigen, St. Martin; Rosemary Ehlinger, Avon; Larry (Peggy) Gertken, Swanville; Lloyd (Jenny) Gertken, Pine River; Eugene (Sharon) Gertken, Albany, sister-inlaw, Vera Lou Klaphake, and brother-in-law, Richard Klaphake. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Donald Gertken and his sister, Bernice Klaphake, brothers-in-law, Leander Blonigen and John Ehlingher, and sister-inlaw, Dorothy Gertken.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

State budget work coming to the forefront at Capitol Many of the major funding bills were passed out of their respective committees recently. Last stop before heading to the House floor for debate and passage is the Ways and Means Committee. We should start seeing these bills show up on the calendar for debate late this week. Stark differences between some of the House and Senate versions could make final passage somewhat challenging as conference committees will be assembled to iron out compromise versions.

One of the bigger surprises came when the House Transportation Committee released its proposed two-year budget proposal. Among the items contained in the bill were increases in the gas tax, vehicle registration fees, and an increase in the sales tax on vehicle purchases. What was unusual was that none of these proposed increases had ever been discussed in committee before they became part of the final bill. And when included with another provision in the transportation bill, a bump in the sales tax for the metro area to fund mass transit, these increases totaled about $1.5 billion.

The bill funding the Department of Agriculture passed out of the House Ag Committee. I was glad the bill included a provision providing financial assistance to retail service stations to upgrade their equipment to handle higher blends of ethanol gasoline. There is a push to move our state to a 15 percent blend of ethanol in our regular gasoline. However because of EPA regulations, much of the equipment in use today, such as underground storage tanks and fuel dispensers, are not certified for blends higher than E-10. So before moving to the higher E-15 standard, we must assist more of our service stations in becoming fully certified. These grants would have a dollar limit with the retailers themselves sharing in the cost of the upgrades.

One of the provisions coming out of the Energy Committee in the House would make more land eligible for solar gardens.

There is a federal definition of land that includes what’s called “prime farmland,” and this legislation would allow solar arrays to be constructed on this type of land. I am not the biggest fan of community solar gardens in the first place, and this legislation would open up more of our state to this type of construction.

It seems like a waste of good farm land to utilize it for this purpose when we have other, less productive land that would be better suit-

ed for this purpose. In addition, these smaller, community solar gardens are the most expensive way to produce electricity and Xcel ratepayers all share in that increased cost of generation.

One of the more challenging areas where the House and Senate have major differences in their bills is in taxes. The Senate has already passed a stand-alone bill granting full conformity with federal PPP loans, while the House tax bill goes only as far as $350,000.

However, the House provision is part of an omnibus bill that also calls for an increase in taxes of around a billion dollars. One aspect of the DFL tax plan calls for the creation of a new, fifth-tier income-tax bracket. The tax rate of this new bracket, 11.5 percent, would give our state the distinction of being the second highest income tax state in the nation.

Congratulations to the Albany girls basketball team on their championship in the Class AA state tournament. They knocked off a very good team from Providence Academy 57-43 to win their first title since 2008. Senior Paige Meyer capped a brilliant career as she led the way with 20 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the championship game.

Three other teams from the area were also in the finals, including the BBE girls and the Alexandria and Hancock boys. Congratulations to them, also.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month Swanville Athletes of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the March Senior High Student of the Month, junior Mackenzie Morris. She is the daughter of Kim and John Lindemann and Justin Morris. Mackenzie has a wide variety of interests, which include sports, being outside, buying slushies and hanging out with friends.

She is very active in school, participating in volleyball, basketball and softball since 7th grade. She was in the school play this year as a junior and also is currently on Student Council and has previously served for 2 other years.

She has garnered numerous awards including the ExCEL award, best passer in volleyball, most improved in softball and both All Conference Honorable Mention and All Conference player in Volleyball.

Outside of school Mackenzie volunteers at Vacation Bible School during the summer.

Math instructor Liza Hasse says, “Mackenzie is a student that I look for-

ward to seeing in class every day. She is a hard-working student that puts forth her greatest effort at all times. She is conscientious of her academic performance and strives to achieve high grades. One thing I truly appreciate about Mackenzie is her ability to be compassionate towards others.

She is always willing to lend a helping hand, share a kind word, or be a friend to someone in need. Mackenzie has developed a strong work ethic through her involvement in the classroom and on the court. Therefore, I believe that Mackenzie will be successful in whatever career she chooses to pursue.

Mackenzie’s future plans include attending college for maybe teaching and/or coaching. Mackenzie’s favorite thing about school is getting to see her classmates and friends. She advises other students “Get a head start on homework and try not to save everything for last minute.”

Physical Ed instructor and coach Chad Brever says, “I have enjoyed working with Mackenzie in my classroom and on the basketball team. She is upbeat and positive every time I see her. Mackenzie works hard to achieve excellent grades and to improve herself on and off the court. She is a positive role model for classmates, teammates and younger students. The student of the month award is well-deserved--she is responsible, respectful, honest, helpful and hardworking.”

When she has time for herself, she enjoys sports, cooking, hiking and hanging out with family and friends. In the future she plans to go to college, however, she is not sure what she would like to major in. Since sixth grade she has played sports which include volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is a leader at Vacation Bible School at St. Peter’s church

in Swanville.

Abbie is a student that is consistently on the A Honor Roll. Her favorite thing about school is geography and math classes. Her advice to other students is “to never give up and always study for tests!”

Social Studies teacher Tom Bzdok says, “Abbi is a well-liked student because she is kind and friendly towards everyone she meets. Abbi always has a smile on her face and puts everyone around her in a joyful mood. She has a positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and never complains or makes excuses when things do not go as planned.

Abbi can always be counted on to make the right decisions in life. Congratulations Abbi!”

Upsala City • April 5, 2021 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Pro-Tem Brian Lange at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor ProTem Brian Lange, Lana Bartells, Crystal Benson, Mitch Lange. Absent: Mayor Rollie Johnson Staff present: First Response Vice President Andrea Douvier, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk-Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Benson moved to approve minutes from March 1, 2021 City Council Meeting, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Bartells moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Jon Archer from Schlenner Wenner gave a report via Zoom on our City’s Audit.

Mitch Lange moved to accept the Audit Report from Schlenner Wenner, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Brian Rollins and Scott Homvig with Ferguson Waterworks gave a presentation on water meters.

Bartells moved to upgrade the current residential meters to R900I with radios and commercial meters to Mach 10 ultrasonic meters with radios, including a belt clip device, and one year of software at an approximate cost of $40,000.00, with the calculated savings to cover the costs of the upgrades within five years, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Brian Lange informed the Council the Upsala Fire Department will have their physicals on Wednesday.

The letter from City of Elmdale was reviewed.

First Response Team: Douvier updated the Council on the First Response Team activities. They are looking at serving a meal on Memorial weekend in conjunction with the Upsala American Legion Memorial Service.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City. He also updated the council on his monthly activities.

Tschida explained to the Council the quote he received from Tenvoorde Ford for a pickup truck.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the office work done in last month. The Consumer Confidence Report has been certified and is now available on the City’s website. The Wellhead Protection Plan Implementation plan on course.

Planning Commission: Brian Lange reported on the Planning Commission’s meeting.

Mitch Lange moved to approve the lot split located at 112 Walnut Ave, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to hold a public hearing to discuss the proposed ordinance on lot splits Mar 5, 2021 at 7:30 pm at Upsala City Hall, 2nd by Mitch Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Unfinished Business: Heritage Days Meeting: Bartells reviewed the Heritage Days meeting that was held March 16 and reminded everyone of the meeting set for April 20. The theme this year is “Welcome Back.”

Upsala Senior Living: Mayor Rollie Johnson will be meeting with Tim Matros on the current stage of the Upsala Senior Living facility.

LBAE: Benson moved to have the Council Members of the Local Board of Appeal and Equalization meet in person at City Hall and conference call with Morrison Land Services to review any contentions, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Initiative Foundation Grant Opportunities: The initiative Foundation offered information on grant opportunities for businesses and non-profits.

UBA Gambling Permit: Benson moved to approve the Gambling permit for the Upsala Ballpark Association with no waiting period set for August 14, 2nd by

Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Little Falls Recreational Facility: The City of Little Falls’ Community Recreational Facility was discussed.

Letter of Concern from A Peaceful Dragon Owners The letter from Jill Zasadny and Joan Wingert was reviewed.

Initiative Foundation Letter of Thanks: The initiative Foundation thanked the City for their annual donation.

Amending TIF #2-4: Bartells moved to approve Resolution 4-5-21-2, a resolution amending the boundaries of Tax Increment Financing District #2-4, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: Appreciation to all the Library workers for their help and dedication to not only their patrons but to the entire community.

Financials: Mitch Lange moved to approve the bills as presented, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Council members in attendance in council chambers were Joe Arnzen, Roland Ahrendt and Bill Pohlmann. Council member Brian Hollenkamp attended remotely. Also in attendance in council chambers were John Call and Lori Hellmann. Guests in attendance remotely were Skylar Rosenow and Janine Kutter.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and a roll call vote was taken. Roland Ahrendtaye, Bill Pohlmann-aye, Brian Hollenkamp-aye, Joe Arnzen-aye. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the February 9, 2021 meeting as written.

The following maintenance items were discussed: 1. There are more overhead lights out at the Library that need the ballasts replaced.

2. The Kubota needs oil, filters and blades and will be ordered from Arnold’s.

3. Estimates will be obtained for spraying the rocks in the ponds.

4. John will be gone April 16-18.

5. The new chlorine scale has been put in but needs to be calibrated.

The Council discussed the brush pile at the pond site. The brush pile got too big and had too many big pieces of wood to burn properly. Too many keys for the lock on the pond gate have been given out and people have been getting employees off the lawnmowers to unlock the gate and going to their homes after hours and on weekends. Moving forward, the lock on the pond gate will be changed, and access to the brush pile will be by advance appointment only. Every effort will be made to accommodate reasonable advance appointment requests but keys will no longer be given out. Last minute access will not be available moving forward. Residents are asked to call City Hall to set up appointment times.

Since the city contracts for sewer and water operation, residents are reminded to call city hall when issues arise. It takes time for the operators to be onsite when a problem arises and water and sewer problems don’t always occur during business hours. The City voice mail is monitored until 10 p.m. on nights and weekends. If there are issues, please call city hall and leave a message and someone will contact the operators and return a call to you if needed.

City wide clean-up will be held on May 15th from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Tom’s Refuse will bring in roll offs where you may bring in items to be hauled away for prices set by the hauer.

The spring leaf and lawn date is scheduled for Friday, May 7th, 2021 and the fall leaf and lawn date is scheduled for Friday, October 15th, 2021.

In attendance was Mayor Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the March 1, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Sharon Erickson, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved, current/bills and invoices paid with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde.

Old Business: Still waiting for an update from Greater Gas Company. Easter Egg Hunt was a huge success, with a large turnout and enjoyed by all who attended.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned with a motion made by Sara Erickson and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Cleaning-Up Stearns County Highways Beginning in May, Stearns County Highway Department, as part of its vegetation management program, will be scheduling some roadside vegetation work along all Stearns County highways. The unwanted brush and noxious weeds will be cut and/or treated with herbicide. This notice is to inform all property owners which have property abutting county roads of the work we have scheduled and their right to use alternative methods.

Our goals are to eliminate the brush and noxious weeds and to promote grass cover along the roadside. Brush along the road reduces driving visibility, obstructs road signs, and reduces driver reaction time to crossing wildlife. Brush presents maintenance problems by retaining water along the roadbed, obstructing ditches, and damaging equipment.

First of all, I don’t play around with single stocks. There’s just too much risk there for me. Since I don’t invest in single stocks, I don’t recommend others do it, either. I look at two things when it comes to investing—real estate and mutual funds.

I always pay cash for income-producing real estate. And when it comes to mutual funds, I invest in good, growth stock mutual funds with a solid track record of at least 10 years. Now, I don’t get mad at people if they want to dabble in single stocks a little, but I wouldn’t recommend having more than 10 percent of your investment portfolio wrapped

up in them. The numbers on playing single stocks are just not that good for the individual, and besides that, I don’t like losing money!

If I woke up in your shoes, I’d move the 25 percent you have in single stocks into good mutual funds. And I wouldn’t use a brokerage account. I’d stick with a quality financial advisor, one who has the heart of a teacher. I think you’ll end up doing better with your money in the long haul this way.

It might be a little boring, but boring is good when it comes to stuff like this. Exciting means you stand a good chance of losing a lot of money.

You’ve got a good income, especially for a single guy who’s 24, so I’d make those adjustments and live like the inheritance money wasn’t there. Stay away from debt, live on a reasonable budget, and make sure you’re putting 15 percent of your income away for retirement. Then, when it’s time a few years down the road, use some of that inheritance money to pay cash for a nice home.

If you can manage to do all that, the money you inherited—even with buying a home—will likely grow to millions of dollars by the time you’re ready to retire. Pretty cool situation, Drew!

Dear Motor Medics, T h e r e ’s smoke coming from near my steering wheel at times right out of the column. It’s not a lot of smoke but I can see it and smell it and it scares me. All my vehicle systems seem to be working fine now but a few months ago my turn signals were acting up. The car is a 2001 Buick Regal. Is this something I should be concerned about or can I let it go?

-Robert in Sheldon, Iowa Dear Robert, Your car is smoking... There is no way we would let that go without a thorough check out for safety. Without seeing the car hands-on it’s hard to say but we have seen smoke generated in this way due to failing turn signal switches. The switch can fail simply because it is old or it can be stressed by things like shorted wiring, failed bulbs or adding an extra load to the system such as a trailer which has an added load of extra lighting that has to be carried by the cars wiring. The first step will be verifying where the smoke is coming from. That will require someone experienced with the system to open it up and inspect the parts. If any parts are found to be burnt they will need to be repaired then the rest of the effected system will need to be diagnosed to make sure that what caused the first failure does not happen again.

-Doug in Branson, Missouri Dear Doug, It is common on many cars especially GM cars and trucks to have this happen and it is often caused by a failure in what is called the evaporative emissions system.

The fuel system is a closed system which prevents fuel from evaporating into the atmosphere which would cause pollution and also be a waste of your money as your fuel would simply disappear over time. The system does need to vent at times for things like filling the tank and also when fuel is being consumed by the engine or it would back up like yours does. Also, in the case of the engine using fuel the tank would eventually collapse. This is just one possible problem.

David A. Wegleitner

David A. “Dave” Wegleitner, age 73 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at his home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A private family memorial service will be held Saturday, April 24 at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Military honors will be by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Public visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home in Melrose. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

David Alois Wegleitner was born January 8, 1948 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Anton and Verena (Heinen) Wegleitner. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 in Germany. He was united in marriage to Linda Gerads on December 26, 1975 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Dave drove semi-truck within the Twin Cities metro area as well as over the road. He retired in 1999. He enjoyed spending time with family, golfing, caring for his yard, hunting, bowling, and playing cards.

Dave was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and SchanhaarOtte VFW Post 7050 of Melrose.
