As for a jawbone, we all need help at some time. Don’t be afraid to seek out advice. Consult someone you already know and trust. That person can usually lead you to someone who can help you if different skills are necessary. Use an expert to find another expert in the same profession.

When it comes to a wishbone or dreaming, it’s important to aim high – to have dreams that inspire you to go beyond your perceived limits. Show me someone who doesn’t dream about the future, and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t know where he or she is going.

Indecision can destroy your dreams, if you allow it. Dr. Suess, the author of the beloved children’s books, identified this common workplace malady in “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” He takes the reader on a journey along beautiful streets and into wide open fields under clear blue skies. Then there’s a crossroads and confusion. Suddenly, we’re in what he calls “The Waiting Place” – a place where people just wait because they can’t make up their minds or because they are afraid of change.

I often joke that it takes years to become an overnight success. But it starts with a dream. My dream was to own a factory. I wasn’t even sure what kind of product I’d make, or exactly where it would be. But I pictured myself walking the factory floor, talking to workers. The pile of broken-down machines I bought might have looked more like a nightmare at the time. But

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Movies

Some of us enjoy watching movies from the 1930’s, 40’s, and 50’s.

They still arouse a little bit of the excitement we felt as kids, when we were able to buy tickets for a few cents and go to the moving picture show on Saturday afternoon. Most of these movies were westerns, which is probably why many of the boys of our youth wanted to look like we had close contact with cowboys. We wanted cowboy boots, cowboy hats and six-shooter guns. We found a piece of rope in the shed and tried to lasso calves with very little success. We wanted to ride horses, but the horses available to us didn’t appreciate a human on their back and if you did get there, you found the horse to be much too wide to provide comfort.

Today we still watch some of those old movies. One thing we now notice is that the movies seem to have the same characters. The title of the movie differs, but somehow the people playing the parts look very familiar. Some actors were then in demand and although the story took place in another western town, these same people were there.

Sometimes they continually caused problems or they continually solved problems. They were either good guys, bad guys or were amusing characters to add some decoration to the story. Their appearance was part of their character and remained the same for most of their career. We had an idea of what the character’s reaction would be when faced with a challenging situation.

You knew and anticipated the Dukes reaction if another character challenged his “royal being” and it was fun waiting for him to re-arrange their face.

We were also constantly aware of who the good and bad guys were. The good guys wore white hats, which stayed white even though they were in a fight, a dust storm or a bad guy threw it on the floor. They were always clean-shaven, with a bathed body and newly laundered clothes. Their horses were beautiful and well cared for. The bad guys had dark hats, dirty clothes and bodies, had bad manners, spit, rode dark rough looking horses, used bad grammar, seemed to be intellectually dim with no redeeming characteristics.

They were just totally bad and deserved any misfortune or justice given to them.

Another big part of the early westerns was the chase scene. Whether the bad guys tried to chase a team and wagon or a stagecoach over the cliff, there was frequently a gorgeous, super-clothed, innocent female who desperately needed to be rescued prior

to the wreck. The chases caused by the good guys horses trying to catch the bad guys horses usually appeared several times in the movie. It was a very exciting situation until we got older and wondered how those poor horses could survive the long, punishing run and we noticed that the film showed the horses running past the same rocks several times.

Today movies involve tremendous explosions, characters performing impossible physical feats, evil characters from another realm or planet and as much foul language and sex as can possibly be squeezed into a 90 minute show. Older movies were made primarily to entertain viewers of any age, today not so much.

“Whatever happened to Randolf Scott riding the trail alone? Whatever happened to Gene and Tex, Roy and Rex, The Durango Kid?” Whatever happened to all of these has happened to the industry.

Successful people rarely reach the top without a lot of help along the way.

The ability and willingness to ask for help is one trait that really stands out among those who are truly committed to success.

Ask questions – and a lot of them. I ask a lot of questions. There’s so much information out there, and I want only the good stuff. I want information that will help me make the right decisions.

There is an art to asking questions and discovering what is central to your success. Here’s the secret: what is it that you really need to know? To get a good answer, ask a good question.

And don’t be afraid to speak up.

I received some good parental advice from my father, who told me: “If you want to be seen, stand up. If you want to be heard, speak up.” And I would add to that, if you don’t speak up, prepare to put up.

The backbone may be the most important bone of all. Courage is regarded as one of the major human virtues. Courage is bravery, valor, standing up to danger, guts and nerve all rolled into one. It’s easier to be ordinary. Courage is what sets you apart from the crowd.

Obituaries Lorraine M. Schaefer

Lorraine M. Schaefer, age 92 of New Munich, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, April 21 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in New Munich. Parish prayers will be at 4:30 p.m. and St. Anne’s Christian Women will pray at 6 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Lorraine M. Wiechmann was born June 22, 1925 in Melrose, Minnesota to William and Rose (Austing) Wiechmann. After she graduated from high school, Lorraine worked in Minneapolis at the defense plant for a couple of years. She returned home and on May 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to Alfred Schaefer at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. The couple started farming south of New Munich until 1978 when they moved to town. During retirement, she enjoyed bowling, playing

cards, quilting, fishing, going on trips to the casino, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.

Lorraine was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and St. Anne’s Christian Women.

Survivors include her husband, Al Schaefer of New Munich; children, Dianne Feddema of Waite Park, Pat Frieler of Sauk Centre, Ken (Lois) Schaefer of New Munich, Roger (Rosie) Schaefer of Sauk Centre, Chuck (Jan) Schaefer of Melrose, Judy (Steve) Keller of St. Cloud, and Stan “Haskell” Schaefer of Waite Park; 17 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; brother and sisters, Lawrence (Mae) Wiechmann of Melrose, Carol Pohlmann of Melrose, Claris (Julius) Massmann of Osakis, and Margie (Vernon) Stroeing of Freeport.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents; sons-in-law, Ralph Feddema and LeRoy Frieler; sister, Florentine Korf; brother, Ervin Wiechmann; sister-in-law, Viola Wiechmann; and brothers-in-law, Joe Pohlmann and Jerry Korf.

Serving as casket bearers will be Keith Feddema, Brian Schaefer, Scott Schaefer, Joshua Schaefer, Kurt Frieler, Chad Schaefer, Michael Frieler, and Tyler Keller.

Cross bearer will be Tracey Thielen and scripture bearer will be Michelle Kremers.

Readers will be Kari Ann O’Keefe, Nicole Lauer, Heather Schaefer, and Ashley Keller.

Gift bearers will be Tammy Squires, Kelly Coulter, and Kristi Soule. Honorary bearers will be St. Anne’s Christian Women.

Burial will take place at 11:05 a.m. on Thursday, April 19 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Deloris is survived byer her sons, Michael and Timothy; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Sally Sauer, sisterin-law, Bernice Sauer; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband of 43 years, James Alois Sauer; sisters, Marilyn McIntyre and Harriet Hess; and brother, Alfred Petron.

Juliann Catherine Bueckers was born February 11, 1948 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Herman and Armella (Roehrl) Bueckers.

She graduated from Albany High School in 1966. On August 19, 1967 she was united in marriage to James “Jim” Rademacher at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Julie worked at Hybrid Electronics Inc. and Jennie-O Foods, and recently at Arnzen Construction Inc./St. Rosa Lumber until her retirement in 2015. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 101. Julie loved growing flowers, cooking, crocheting, going camping with Jim, and spending their winters in Texas. They made many

lasting friendships and memories with the Sundowners, Northwoods, and Winnehahas camping groups.

Julie’s true love was her family. She adored her children and grandchildren and had a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Countless stories relating to her “work hard, play hard” attitude will be remembered and shared for many years to come. She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Jim Rademacher of Melrose; children, Michelle Rademacher (Ronnie Hellermann) of Melrose, Chad (Jodi) Rademacher of Melrose, and Jason (Sue) Rademacher of Melrose; grandchildren, Callie, Cole, Savannah, Katie, Ashley, and Tyler; brothers and sisters, Shirley Hiltner of Albany, Mary Evens of Albany, Bernard (Diane) Bueckers of Albany, Patty (Mike) Marthaler of Talmoon, Mike (Rita) Bueckers of Avon, Geri (Steve) Hanson of St. Cloud, Fran (Debbie) Bueckers of St. Cloud, Norbert (Janet) Bueckers of Cushing, John Bueckers of Staples, and Richard (Jane) Bueckers of Nashwauk.

Alexis Feldewerd, of Albany, MN named a Merit Scholarship recipient at the U of M Crookston. A scholarship brunch was held for incoming Merit Scholarship recipients at the University of Minnesota Crookston in late March.

The students learned about First Year Experience courses, financial aid, and registered for their fall semester 2018 classes. During the brunch, the students were recognized followed by the opportunity for a campus tour.

There is a big difference between power and influence. Power comes from a position we have in a group or organization. We gain influence by what we know or are able to do. In our relationship with God, He has all of the power and He uses it to shape us into the plan He has for us. But we can go to Him in prayer and ask Him to grant us His power to overcome some sin in our life and bring hope, healing and wholeness to us or our loved ones when we are sick or broken.

Our Psalmist reminds us of this important fact. When we feel alone or abandoned, depressed or have a doubt about God’s care or concern for us, he reminds us to look to God for help: “Unless the Lord had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.”

Unfortunately, we do not know what was going on in the life of the writer. He may have been facing a life-threatening illness, grieving over the loss of a loved one or perhaps facing financial disaster.

He reminds us that “it” made no difference. Whatever problem he was facing or whatever disaster may have been on the horizon or whatever sickness may have stricken him no one could have made a difference in his life but God. “Unless the Lord...,” he wrote. Not “unless I find” or “a friend helps me find” the right physician or the right attorney or the right banker. No. He realized the limitations of man. His situation was beyond them. But he knew first hand that only his Lord could rescue him.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Ag issues crop up; session enters home stretch

Five weeks remain in the 2018 legislative session, with adjournment set for May 21. This Friday marks the third deadline when all finance bills must be completed.

Committees have been meeting extra hours in order to get their omnibus bills ready for floor action. Supplemental spending targets were released late last week, and they proved to be a nice mix of tax reform and spending, on such things as school safety and transportation, along with funding to erase a possible seven percent cut for those who care for residents with disabilities.

Those in the ag community were especially busy last week, trying to understand a penalty option proposed by the Board of Water and Soil Resources. Despite current statute that calls for a maximum $500 penalty for buffer non-compliance, a BWSR sub-committee voted to release the new option for public comment. Response was swift and overwhelmingly negative to the plan that called for penalties based on linear footage. Included in the draft release was a table specifically outlining what those penalties should be, the size of which was so high it bordered on ridiculous. Fines could range up to at least $100,000 for a farmer being non-compliant on several feet of buffer!

Because this new option was so onerous, I’m not sure if it was ever a serious plan. With hundreds of negative comments pouring in, it quickly became evident that a wave of negative attitude towards BWSR was growing.

The governor sent out a letter dated April 9, in which he distanced himself from the new option. He wrote, “The proposed fines are unreasonable. They have come as a shock to not only myself, but also to Minnesota farmers.”

The BWSR director, John Jaschke, also sent out a letter in which he took full blame for the release of the draft document, saying it was done without taking into account the full effect it would have on farmers. He also testified last week before special committee hearings in both the House and Senate. At the special hearing Thursday before my House Ag. Policy Committee, 15 testifiers talked about the new penalty option and their dealings with BWSR and SWCDs at the local level. A common thread was that local control was lacking because of a perceived need to be in compliance with BWSR’s statewide penalty structure.

Stevens County was a case in point. Their county board chairman testified that they had received a letter from BWSR that, in effect, took away the county’s buffer enforcement because it wasn’t “sufficient” when compared to BWSR’s model ordinance. The Stevens County attorney also testified, saying that state statute calls for a maximum penalty of $500, while the BWSR plan calls for recurring penalties, which could result in much higher fines.

It was also made known that compliance with buffers on public waters has reached 98 percent. So, the obvious question to be asked is, “what is the problem that was being addressed with this new penalty structure?” Yes, it has been dropped by BWSR, but the doubt and lack of trust remain.

The Legislature needs to go back and take a look at the buffer law again, and more exactly define non-compliance and what the range of penalties will be. We also need to revisit the entire area of local control and make sure that our local units of government truly have a voice in these matters.

This spring weather situation is rapidly getting serious. Many areas of the state got wacked over the weekend with yet another storm that set records for April snowfall. It would appear that little, if any, field work will get done in April, and that means the acreage of small grains planted will

When it finally does warm up (we hope), my guess is that we’ll see many more acres of soybeans, as that crop can be planted all

the way through May and into June, although yields will be reduced the later it’s planted.

Burnhamville Township March 27, 2018 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held March 27, 2018 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

Newly elected officers were sworn in before the meeting.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to appoint Mike Berscheit as chairman. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to appoint Bruce Johnson as vice-chair.

Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motions passed.

The minutes from the regular meeting of February 27, 2018 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from Todd County and Bruce Township Planning and Zoning, asphalt patching and tree service ads, life insurance and address updates for officers, and election equipment grant update.

The clerk received an access permit from property owner on Fitland Loop. Sup. Ber-

scheit approved application and Sup. Johnson will view area for culvert requirement.

The clerk received notice that each township should have electronic funds transfer policy.

Burnhamville Township will allow treasurer and or clerk to authorize electronic transfer of funds previously approved by the board for normal township business.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5552 through 5566: Rev. $1,688.79; R & B $3,645.00 Fire $1,672.00. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

At the March 13, 2018 township election Shirley Hulinsky was re-elected clerk and Joe Muellner was elected supervisor.

Dear Lisa, Well, it’s difficult to be generous when you’re broke. You don’t even have $1,000 to your names, and you’re going to buy two laptops? I don’t know how much debt you have, or what your household income is, but I do know neither of you have managed your money very well in the past.

If you make $50,000 a year, and you have $70,000 in debt, you should sincerely and apologetically bow out.

Explain that you made a big mistake, and just be honest about why you can’t provide the laptops. If you make $200,000 a year, but you’ve just been incredibly silly and lazy with your money, you should buy the laptops and then get serious about growing up and getting control of your finances.

Don’t make promises, financial or otherwise, you can’t keep. I know this is

By Connie Nelson, Hands of Hope Resource Center Over the years, specifically in April, as April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Hands of Hope Resource Center has shared statistics, definitions and resources about sexual assault. We will continue to do that, but in the last months, many have joined in talking about sexual assaults, with the #METOO movement, the NO More campaign, and the ongoing sexual abuse accusations by women and men from all walks of life, ages, and occupations that are coming to light in the media.

Victims have started to speak out about the abuse they have endured. In 2018 the theme for SAAM is “Embrace Your Voice.” How we talk about sexual violence matters. We can create a culture of respect, equality and safety, by using our voices to support victims, by speaking out against victim blaming, and educating young and old about what sexual violence is.

The unfortunate reality of sexual abuse, is that nearly every one of us know someone that has been sexually abused at one time or another. There is no age limit to being a victim of sexual assault, it’s happening to our young children, our elderly and all ages in between. Victims often times never reveal these assaults. They are often embarrassed, ashamed of what has happened, are blaming themselves for the incident,

or are in fear of retribution from the attacker. Also, a large number of sexual assaults are perpetrated by family or household members or someone the victim is familiar with, and some assaults are happening right in their own homes.

Victims often times show signs of their victimization, it can be bedwetting, soreness or redness in genital areas, and for teen victims, grades may change, less socializing with friends and family, feelings of guilt, and often times signs of depression, and or even PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome).

So how do we help victims? We listen, we are compassionate and understanding of their trauma, and provide support. If a victim chooses to report the violence, perhaps suggest they stop in or call Hands of Hope Resource Center and talk with an advocate. The conversation will be heard with care and compassion and will be kept confidential. An advocate can assist if that person decides to report to law enforcement, or medical professionals or refer to counseling resources. Stearns County Sheriff’s News Sneaky Scammers Well known cyber security journalist Brian Krebs is reporting a scam aimed at chip-based payment cards. The crooks steal cards before they reach their intended recipients—an old technique for credit card fraud, admittedly, but now with an added twist. These days, just stealing a new card in transit often will not work because the crooks do not have the information needed to activate the new card.

In this scam, the crooks figured out a way to do an end run around the activation process: steal just the chip off the card and wait for the legitimate recipient to activate the card. Assuming the recipient does not spot the tampering of course.

How the Crime Works: The crooks intercept the cards on the way to corporate recipients and pry the chips out of the cards. They then glue old chips from expired cards into the holes left by the real chips. (The replacement chips do not need to work. They merely need to look OK to disguise the fact that the cards have been tampered with.)

Next, they send the original cards onwards to the intended recipients and wait for the recipients to activate the modified cards. The final step is to spend, spend, and spend using the stolen chips glued onto fake blank cards. This works either until the card issuers spot irregularities in the transactions being processed or until the cardholders try to do chip transactions themselves and realize their new cards have dud chips and report the problem.

What to Do? You should inspect any new cards carefully. It is hard to remove the chip without leaving some signs of tampering so look for heat damage (the card plastic tends to wrinkle, bend, and change color easily) or scratches around the chip where the original was pried out.

Take the card into your bank to activate it if that is a possibility. If you cannot activate in the bank, do a small chip transaction immediately after activation. Do not swipe the card because you are testing to see if the chip is a dud or not. If it is, cancel the card IMMEDIATELY! In addition, make a police report with your local jurisdiction, notify the credit card company and put some type of notice on your credit report.

ATV Rules Well, in most years, you might be tooling around on an ATV by now. With it being January 104th or so, the season is a bit delayed. With that being said, it is probably a good time to go over some of the rules that apply to ATVs. Minnesota defines ATVs as Class 1, width less that 50 inches or Class 2, width of 50-65 inches.

Typically, Class 1 is what we recognize as the one rider style ATV and Class

2 is the side-by-side that can hold 2 or 4 riders. Where can ATVs be driven?

Generally, on private property without restrictions and then on roads or public lands with some restrictions. Between April 1 and August 1, ATVs cannot be driven in the ditches of state highways or county roads.

Stearns County is in the Minnesota agricultural zone where this restriction applies. What this means in reality is that with the exception of Class 1 ATVs registered solely for agricultural use, they can’t be on or within the road right of way of state or county roads during those times. Class 2 ATVs may be operated on the shoulder of extreme right hand side of state or county roads. They are never allowed to be operated in the ditches, also known as road right of way.

Do I need a driver’s license to operate an ATV? If you are on public lands or roads and over 16, yes. If you are between 12 and 16 and on public land or roads, you need an ATV safety certificate and need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Do I need to wear a helmet? If you are under the age of 18 and on public land and roads, yes.

When can I ride an ATV through fields? Unless you have permission from the land owner, the answer is NEVER. Can I ride either a Class 1 or Class 2 ATV on the Wobegon Trail? No. ATVs are not allowed on the trail; however, law enforcement and parks personnel are authorized to travel the trail for safety, security and maintenance. Obviously, these are only a few of the rules for ATVs. One more piece of advice, dirt bikes, also known as off highway motorcycles, may only be operated on private property.
