I recently discussed this quandary with my friend Tom Hopkins, who is a sales management rock star. More than four million people have attended Tom’s lively sales seminars. He leads 30 seminars each year throughout the United States and many foreign countries. More than 35,000 corporations and millions of professional salespeople use his sales training materials daily. He’s also the author of 17 books, including the sales classic, “How to Master the Art of Selling.”

Tom hit hard on these areas of improvement for sales managers: Preplan sales meetings. Too many sales managers just show up and go through the motions. Tom led the country’s top Coldwell Banker real estate office, and he constantly had an agenda to pass out so sales reps knew exactly what would be covered. He always had some exciting new things because “You have to really sell salespeople on selling each and every meeting.”

Catch people doing something right and praise them. At every sales meeting

Tom recognized people who were doing something right. He would try to praise 25 percent of the attendees at every meeting.

Serve as a role model. “Sales managers need to be a shining example of what they want their salespeople to be like,” Tom said. “They need to be truly respected as human beings - the way they live, their honesty, integrity and work ethic. Sales managers need to work harder on themselves than they do on the job of management to become the type of person that their salespeople want to become.”

Emphasize time management. Tom said: “Sales managers need to work harder on time planning and organization than most people do. We all have 86,400 seconds in a day. No one has any more or any less. The most successful sales managers are eloquent time planners.”

Strive to motivate and train people.

Tom told me that the biggest mistake sales managers make is to not get their sales people productive fast enough. He stressed the need for up-to-date training and having a top-notch library in the office.

For example, Tom said when he was in management, he would give a favorite sales book to each new hire with a twoweek assignment to highlight the best ideas on each page. On the last page he wrote that he would treat the person to a nice lunch. Then after two weeks, he would call them into his office and ask if they finished the book. If they said, “Oh, yeah. I finished it all,” and they didn’t mention the lunch, then Tom knew his new hire had a character flaw.

I also use books for training, asking reps to share their insights with the rest of the staff. And when we send our sales people to conventions, their assignment is to come back and teach everyone about the concepts at our next sales meeting.

Fire unproductive sales reps. “A good sales manager can’t be afraid to change their people if they can’t change their people,” Tom said. “If you can’t change a person after a 90-day period to where they get their attitude back and are productive, then you have to make a change. Too many sales managers just don’t want to rock the boat.”

I always say, it’s not the people you fire who make your life miserable; it’s the people you don’t fire who make your life miserable.

Obituaries Theodore “Teddy” Czech The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Theodore “Teddy” Czech, age 93 of Holdingford, will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 18 at Church of All Saints St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Teddy died Friday at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Thursday at the church in Holdingford.

Teddy was born January 9, 1920 in Holding Township to Peter and Mary (Trutwin) Czech. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1939.

Teddy married Irene Chromey on June 21, 1950 in St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He was a mail carrier for 8 years and farmed his entire life. He worked for the Soo Line Railroad for over 17 years and he was also a township supervisor for Holding Township for over 47 years.

He retired in 1982. He was a member of the Church of All Saints - St. Hedwig and he was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way. Teddy is survived by his children; Deborah (John) Binsfeld, Holdingford;

Cheryl (Chuck) Barnes, Holdingford; Floyd (Nellie) Czech, Silver Lake; Bonnie (Robert) Soltis, Upsala; Pamela (Donald) Fischer, Albany; Virgil (Sheila) Czech, Holdingford; Loran (Brenda) Czech, Little Falls; Gwen (Al) Seitz, Sauk Center; his brothers and sisters, Marcella (Ed) Hiemenz, St. Augusta; Florence (Victor) Detloff, Melrose; Teckla Scegura, Avon, and Jim Czech, Holdingford. Teddy is also survived by his grandchildren; Greg, Michelle, Tamara, Sheila, Jason, Teddy, Cindy, Brian, Tina, Chad, Curtis, Calvin, Craig, Amy, Peter, Joseph, Amanda, Joanna, Jessica, Jenny and Aaron; his stepgrandchildren; Patrick; Ranae; Julia and Thomas; his great-grandchildren; Grant, Keyona, Teddy, Isabella, Christopher, Jazmin, Emma, Ethan, Sarah, Bryce, Evan, Addilyn, Caden, Parker, Preston, Madison, Brady, Nevaeh, William, Wyatt, Ella, Amber, Zoey, Caleb, McCoy. Teddy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene on July 5, 2011, his brothers, Louis Czech, Frank Czech, Nick Czech, Peter Czech; sisters, Helen Czech, Eleanor Heimenz, and Rose Mary Kociemba. He is also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Terri Soltis and great-grandchildren, Ava Fischer and Bentley Nguyen.

Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin-Brenny Funeral Home in Holdingford.

The Upsala Area School student council is sponsoring a Mock Crash on Thursday, April 25. With help from community agencies including the volunteer fire department, EMS, and local law enforcement from Morrison County and the State of Minnesota, the students will be able to see what really happens at the sight of a crash.

Diane I. Smieja, age 66 of Burtrum, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 15, 2013 at the CentraCare Health Systems Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Friday, April 19 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating.

Interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m.

Friday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the Christian Mothers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Diane Isabelle Arnold was born November 21, 1946 in Litchfield, Minnesota to Romauld and Martha (Bensfield) Arnold. Diane graduated from Royalton High School in 1965. On June 18, 1966 she married John Smieja at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton.

Diane worked as an assembler at HEI from 1980 through 1990. She then was

a care taker at Meridian Services for ten years and at Eagle’s Crossing for three years until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle and the Christian Mothers. Diane loved spending time with her family and playing games with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts and was very artistic.

Diane was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters, Eugene Arnold, Kenneth Arnold, Elaine Thommes, and Linda Rice.

Serving as casket bearers will be Ken Smieja, Tony Smieja, Austin Smieja, Avery Smieja, Kristen Smieja, and Kaelin Smieja. Honorary bearers will be Ashley Severson, Kiley Smieja, Tyler Smieja, Nathan Lambrecht, Shane Lambrecht, Remmi Jensen, and Cooper Jensen.

C o l e t t e was born in Gilman to Adam and Selma (Imbiorski) Helmin. She grew up on a farm in the Gilman area and worked at the St. Cloud Hospital prior to meeting her husband, Elmer. Colette married Elmer Korneck on June 13, 1960 and the couple farmed near St. Anna until June of 1986; they then moved to Avon. She worked at Fingerhut for 10 years until her retirement.

Colette was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Avon and Christian Mothers in St. Anna. She enjoyed baking

She had a great sense of humor and was an eternal optimist; always seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Colette had three things that meant the most to her throughout her life: God, family, and friends. She will be dearly missed.

Rosella J. “Rosie” Schmitz Rosella J. “Rosie” Schmitz, age 73 of Melrose and formerly of Sauk Centre, died peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2013 at her son’s home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Wednesday, April 17 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Ken Riedemann officiating and Rev. Andrew Marthaler concelebrating. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Rosella June Schmitz was born June 14, 1939 in Birchdale Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Otto and Bertha (Kiffmeyer) Beilke. She was employed at Ralph’s Bakery then for Dr. Hanson Veterinarian. She moved to Sioux Falls, SD for 8 years and continued to work for Dr. Hanson. Rosie returned to Sauk Centre in 1974 and married Florian Schmitz on November 29, 1974 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple made their home in Sauk Centre and then moved

to Melrose. She enjoyed spending time with family, baking and going for walks.

She also helped with several community Thanksgiving dinners in Sauk Centre.

Rosie was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church.

Survivors include her three sons, Aaron (Kim) Schmitz of Melrose, Kris Schmitz of St. Cloud and Steve (Chandra) Schmitz of Sauk Centre; three grandchildren, Stephanie, Derek and Jadyn Schmitz; brothers and sisters, John Beilke, Rudy (Janet) Beilke, Betty VanHavermaet, Bob (Lila) Beilke, Dorothy (Don) Jacobs, Bev Huot, Benny (Marie) Beilke, Carol (Roy) Dierkhising all of Sauk Centre and Shirley Beilke of Coon Rapids; sister-in-law, Lorraine Beilke of Sauk Centre.

Rosie was preceded in death by her husband, Florian Schmitz on August 17, 2012; parents; brother, Art Beilke; sisters, Gertie Beilke and Jan Marth; and infant brothers and sister.

Serving as casket bearers were Joel Beilke, Randy Beilke, Gary Dierkhising, Roger VanHavermaet, Scott Beilke and John Beilke. Cross bearer was Derek Schmitz and scripture bearer was Stephanie Schmitz. Lector was Janet Zenzen and gift bearers were Lorraine Beilke and Carol Dierkhising.

It is interesting that even the secular world is familiar with the story of Noah’s Ark and accepts it as a factual event in history. You can find cute little decorations, storybooks, toys, etc. about Noah’s Ark. The truth from Scripture however, does not depict this as a cute little story at all! In fact, it is a story of destruction and horror.

God had created mankind in His own image. Sin entered the world through man’s disobedience to God. God saw how corrupt the earth had become- all the people on earth had corrupted their ways; Genesis 6. Noah was a righteous man who ‘walked with God’. God gave him instructions on how to be spared from the coming destruction that he was going to bring on the earth. Noah was faithful and did everything just as God had commanded him. We can only imagine the ridicule and mocking that this man received during the 120 years of preparation as he built a huge boat on dry land. It had never rained before, so to tell the people that their would be a coming flood must have sounded extremely absurd!

In Matthew 24, Jesus warns us that “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” God in His grace and mercy had given Noah detailed commands on how to be saved from the coming destruction. He has done that for us as well by giving us His Holy Word full of instructions and warnings!

Has this world become like the bystanders who watched and mocked Noah as he was faithfully obeying the Lord? The scoffers stand alongside the righteous people who truly walk with God and make fun of the ‘building of their faith’ as they await the return of Christ. The bystanders today doubt that the Lord will return at any moment, or they would change their wicked ways and be ready for the promised moment when Jesus said He will return like a thief in the night, at an hour when we do not expect Him. For the people in Noah’s day, it was too late once the floodgates opened and they realized that the ‘crazy man’ was right. The Lord had already shut the door to the ark and there was no more time to change their minds. Are we paying attention to the warning signs across the globe? The world is trying to figure out what is going on and who is to blame.

The answers are all in the Bible- if we would just look.

The Lord is shaking up the earth with a global warning, being patient with mankind because He does not wish for any of us to choose everlasting destruction. The door is still open for us to repent and turn to Jesus as our Savior. Don’t find yourself on the outside as the people in Noah’s day. Will you be ready? Will you be safe ‘in Christ’ as Noah was safe ‘in the ark’?

Adam Wayne Mortenson Christopher David Wessman On Wednesday morning, 4-10-2013, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a residential burglary in Burnhamville Twp. The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office also received a call of a residential burglary and two business burglaries in the Swanville area. The Todd County Sheriff’s Office and the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office conducted a joint investigation which led to the arrest of two individuals: Adam Wayne Mortenson (19 YOA) of rural Swanville; and Christopher David Wessman (19 YOA), also of rural Swanville.

Concerned citizens who observed suspicious behavior and contacted Law Enforcement were instrumental in the apprehension of the suspects.

Mortenson and Wessman are being held at the Todd County Detention Center awaiting formal charges.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Thought for the week:

Budget Bills advancing to House Floor Committee action in the Minnesota House is winding down as the final deadline for spending bills to be passed out of committee is this Friday, April 19. Action then shifts to more and longer floor sessions, with the schedule for this week having us in session every day, including Saturday, April 20. It’s expected that all major spending bills will be heard during the week and passed.

The Senate released its tax bill last week, and it contained some mild surprises. They made changes to the sales tax, although not going quite as far as Gov. Mark Dayton did in his first proposal. Under the Senate plan, the sales tax rate would drop to 6 percent but would be expanded to include all clothing and some services, such as auto and farm machinery repairs. Also in the Senate plan is a proposal to exempt cities and counties from paying the sales tax, something I have supported and, in fact, carried a bill in the House to that effect.

The exemption, much the same as townships currently receive, would cost the state around $140 million in lost rev-

enue, so it’s a big item. Various plans in both chambers also provide increased local government aid to cities and counties, and I’d be surprised if they get both the tax break and increased LGA in the final plan that’s passed and sent to the Governor.

One of the other bills waiting to be heard pertains to allowing day care providers to become unionized. It’s been combined with another group, those who are personal care attendants, into one bill seeking unionization for both.

This legislation just doesn’t make sense to me as opposition to a union in this part of the state is overwhelming. I have not visited with a single provider who is in favor of such a move. Talked with one over the weekend who said she would probably leave the field if this vote is successful. She cited the union issue, along with increased regulations from the state and county, as reasons for her possible “retirement.”

A news release last week from a group called Watchdog.org Minnesota Bureau gave details of a survey sent out last month by the Minnesota Licensed Family Child Care Association. The

survey was sent to 8,700 providers, of which 1,788 responded. One of the questions asked was “Do you support the formation of a union of licensed family child care providers?” The response was 86 percent No, 6 percent Yes, and 8 percent Uncertain.

Among the reasons given for the overwhelming negative margin was that a union would affect both the cost of day care and the availability of service to families receiving the state subsidy known as Child Care Assistance Program. Approximately four of five who responded said they “might not or would not” continue providing service to those families. And by an equally large margin, the group said they were against unlicensed providers participating in the possible vote on unionization.

Our winter-like weather just won’t leave us! The landscape became white again from a storm last week, and then a freezing mix of rain, ice pellets and snow made travel difficult over the weekend.

Gravel roads are a mess as they haven’t been able to dry out and firm up. It looks as though field work won’t get going now until sometime in May. Talked with a friend over the weekend about when the ice would be coming off Lake Minnewaska, and he replied, “I think it’s still making ice!”

On April 23, 2013, 25,000 volunteers will give away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the country.

The free book giveaway is part of World Book Night U.S. (WBN), an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially printed paperbacks to light or nonreaders across America on one day. Great River Regional Library (GRRL) has recruited more than more than 50 volunteers who will share books at different locations across Central Minnesota such as parks, coffee shops and fitness centers.

Each volunteer will receive 20 copies of one book to give away. The book will be selected from 30 titles provided by WBN to satisfy a variety of interests. It is hoped that when volunteers give the same book within a community, readers will share their reactions and become more involved in books and reading. Providing people with materials and services to support lifelong learning and personal enrichment is a goal within the library’s strategic plan.

WBN is also celebrated April 23 in Germany, the U.K. and Ireland. April 23 is the date of the UNESCO International Day of the Book, the birthday of William Shakespeare, and the date of death for both Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, author of “Don Quixote,” considered to be the first modern European novel.

Bestselling authors Ann Patchett and James Patterson are honorary chairpeople for WBN. Patterson said: “In my experience, when people like what they are doing, they do more of it. This is the genius of World Book Night — it gets people reading by connect-

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office is making it easier to attract information about crimes and let the source remain anonymous. The Sheriff’s Office again renewed its partnership with Crime Stoppers of Minnesota which makes available information gathering that preserves the anonymity of the provider of the information and offers a cash reward.

By continuing to support use of Crime Stoppers citizens in the area will be reminded that they can help solve crimes and remain safe.

Citizens may be reluctant to give information about a crime or fugitive directly to the authorities, for a variety of reasons, but still want to ‘do the right thing’ by helping solve a crime. They can contact Crime Stoppers anonymously and the information will then be shared with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office or whichever agency the tip information leads to. Since persons committing a crime in one community often move on, this easy access helps fight crime across the State of Minnesota. In 2012 the number of tips received by Crime Stoppers increased by almost 38% with tips being sent to 131 law enforcement agencies at municipal, county and federal levels.

Working with Crime Stoppers of Minnesota gives the Todd County Sheriff’s Office a greater reach for collecting information about crimes.
