How to turn your company into a learning organization -By Harvey Mackay A Marine corporal was driving a benefits specialist from base to base delivering lectures on life insurance, according to a story in “Reader’s Digest.”

After listening to a dozen of these talks, the corporal insisted he knew the spiel by heart.

“Prove it,” the benefits specialist said.

So at the next base, the corporal delivered the speech flawlessly until a Marine asked, “What do I pay for insurance after I leave the Corps?”

The corporal temporarily froze before he had an idea. “Marine,” he said sternly, as he pointed to the benefits specialist, “that is such a dumb question that I am going to let my driver answer it.”

That corporal demonstrated two important skills: thinking on his feet and continuous learning.

When I was building my envelope manufacturing company, I was driving all over the area to get business. I drove 15,000-20,000 miles a year and would constantly listen to audio tapes in the car, and later CDs to boost my motivation and

sharpen my sales skills. I didn’t want the drive time to be down time.

Knowing the average person spends three and a half years over their lifetime in their car, I had a plan to turn my automobile into a university. I wanted to pass that opportunity on to our sales force as well. That’s why for years our company has had a tremendous library of motivational, sales and marketing materials for our employees to use. Now, like everyone else, we’ve moved on to podcasts. Why not maximize your time and learn something new?

Whenever we send someone to a seminar or training program, we ask them to come back and teach everyone at our company what they learned to maximize the return from our investment dollars.

This is true for anything that our people learn that might benefit others. That way the entire group can improve their skills.

No matter how long you have been building your career, and how much you have learned with experience, there’s always more to absorb. Getting better at your job goes far beyond just learning the ropes; it’s a forever process that every successful person already knows. Maybe you can’t learn something new every day, but you can take advantage of every opportunity to learn.

the ability to process information, and the ability to learn as an organization is crucial. Here are five ideas to create a learning organization: 1. Encourage self-directed learning for employees. Don’t tell anyone what to learn, but give permission for people to explore what they think is important. Provide resources and access to information, the internet, time off and tuition reimbursement if possible.

2.

Promote inter-department collaboration. Bring together members of teams from different departments and let them share ideas and strategies.

Encourage staff to share different opinions and points of view, so that meetings produce thoughtful, innovative results.

3. Use open-ended language. In your meetings and discussions, ask questions that stimulate creative thought and learning without simply focusing on finding “correct” answers. Show everyone on your team that you consider striving for improvement more important than arriving at a single “right” answer.

4. Treat mistakes as learning opportunities.

Hold honest, straightforward conversations when something doesn’t work as anticipated. On a regular basis, ask team members what’s working and what isn’t. Look for lessons that might improve the process next time, as well as ideas for new processes that might result in an innovative product.

A baseball manager made an announcement to his team at the hotel on the morning of the game that there would be two buses leaving for the ballpark.

“The 2 p.m. bus will be for those players who need extra work, and the empty bus will be leaving at 5 p.m.”

We all need extra work if we want to improve.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Staying In I’m sure that everyone reading this article has spent much more time at home lately.

We can buy gas at a bargain price, but since we don’t go anywhere, we buy very little gas.

Grocery stores will bring your groceries out to your car if you are afraid of the surfaces, people or air in the store. Churches are closed during a very important time of the church year to avoid contact with large numbers of people, which may include some Covid-19 carrier. Restaurants are offering curb delivery service so that there is still a possibility for intimate candlelight dinners at home. Everybody in town can still go to the post office to get their mail, whether they are well or not. We are delaying the exposure in a hope that some miracle pill will be developed before the bug gets to us. Probably a good plan.

The on-sale liquor establishments have been ordered to shut down, due to the concern about gathering of more than 10 people at one location. Frequently these bars have either a patio or a parking lot which would be suitable to allow a gathering of up to 10 people, even if they stayed 8 feet from each other. Since the meat department or bakery in a grocery store, a restaurant kitchen or a gas station that services your car all physically humanly act to produce the service that we need, there should be some form of service that a bar can offer. Why can’t they sell on-sale beverages to their customers as a pickup item to be consumed on premises, based on the number of customers on the premises? Since it is not a good idea to consume in your car, it would be more popular as soon as spring gets here.

For those who still have children home from school, they may now be able to spend one-on-one time with the

kids. Hopefully both parents and kids will come to know each other better in relation to guidelines, bounds and a more clear understanding of logic and reasoning by both the parents and the kids. We, as parents, sometimes wonder where the kids “come up with that way of thinking.” If we remember that our children are influenced toward the teachers way of thinking at least 6 hours per day, the thinking of the fellow school bus riders an hour per day, plus social media and the TV using up most of the rest of their waking hours, we begin to feel a lack of commonality of our thoughts. We need to spend quality time together--sharing ideas and feelings.

We recently went to pick up a few groceries and discovered that we were two of the three customers at the location wearing masks. It seems that the media reports and warnings are not being taken as seriously as some of the experts expect.

The news must not ignore a good crisis.

But, we sometimes turn off the news to avoid constantly hearing that “it’s bad” according to one report and “it’s getting better” on another. Neither are considering different geographic locations.

One of the scary results of this crisis is that the guys previously said that they would do that part of their wives request when they had time, but now they have time! Scary! Like Red Green says, “hang in there, we’re all in this together.”

Statewide Tornado Drills on Thursday, April 16 The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management wants to remind everyone that Severe Weather Awareness Week is recognized this week. On Thursday, April 16th, we will be participating in the Statewide Tornado Drills with sirens being activated at 1:45 PM and 6:45 PM. Outdoor warning sirens will sound in a simulated tornado warning. The tornado drills allow everyone in the community to practice their emergency plans for tornadoes. The first drill is intended for institutions and businesses. The evening drill is intended for second shift workers and families. There

is no such thing as an “all-clear” siren.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, burning restrictions are on due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Their intent is to lower the amount of fires to minimize the risk of first responders being paged out and being potentially exposed to the virus. It is also their intent to try to limit the amount of smoke in the air so a person who is at home can rest without the added irritant of smoke and stay out of an already stressed healthcare system.

Campfires are allowed if they meet the statute definition: - No larger than 3x3 ft.

Grey Eagle Township is looking for someone to maintain the swimming beach on Big Birch Lake and the public boat access area. -Peter Dear Peter, You should only buy a building when you have solid track record of success, and a really good idea of what your building needs will be. A growing business is always a good thing, but you don’t want to focus too much on real estate and not enough on generating revenue and managing that growth intelligently. even better if you can work out of your home, but I understand that’s not always practical. Down the road, you can choose to lease with an option to buy, or in the right situation, just buy a building.

Remember, make sure you do it all with cash. Don’t add debt to the equation!

-Dave Dear Dave, Life insurance is one of those things I always said I would get around to buying someday, but for various reasons I just haven’t done it yet. Is there ever a time when it is too late to get life insurance?

-Angie Dear Angie, First of all, I only recommend level term life insurance. It’s fairly easy to get until around age 70, depending on your overall health situation. Once you get into your seventies and beyond, however, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced coverage.

I recommend that most people have 10 to 12 times their annual income in term life insurance. To be honest, though, you really shouldn’t need life insurance if you’re 70 or older. At that point, if you’ve saved and invested wisely over the years, you can be self-insured. By this, I mean you’ve got enough money in savings and investments to cover funeral expenses— plus enough for a spouse to live on comfortably after you’re gone.

Todd County Planning and Zoning News As we all navigate through that battle with Covid-19, Todd County Planning and Zoning would like to inform all county residents that we are still available during regular business hours to conduct business. All Planning and Zoning staff are available for phone and email to answer questions, review applications, calculate fees, or assist with any other land use activities that are needed.

We encourage land owners to contact us to discuss your land use plans in advance of application. Our staff can assist you through the application process that works best for you. We always have paper applications available that can be mailed or emailed to you. We also have an online permitting option that requires a log in and password but is very simple to navigate once logged in.

Similar to applications, fees can be paid by check or online. Checks can be mailed to our office or can be placed in

the tax payment drop boxes. Those that wish to drop payments in the tax payment drop box should clearly address the envelope to Planning and Zoning. Credit card payments can be completed online through a very simple process. Please note that credit card payments are subject to transaction fees. Prior to submittal of fees, please confirm with Planning and Zoning staff what the total fees will be for your application.

As you start to plan your construction projects, we highly encourage you to contact our office early in the process to discuss the permitting process. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Ron asked for approval of the resolution to conduct the Township meeting by telephone. Mike made that motion, Ray made the second.

Ray said not much to report, roads are in good shape except for a few holes which can wait till frost is out. Discussion on how to handle the annual road check. It was decided to wait on this, if issues come up they can be handled at that time. Some shouldering will need to be done on 335th and also on Arden Drive. Ron asked Ray to contact Midwest Asphalt as there are some spots and cracks that need to be filled. Erv H. presented his contracts for 2020. Blading was proposed at $95.00 an hour, a slight increase from last year. Mike made the motion to accept the bid.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

A look at numerous issues related to stay-at-home order The stay-athome order continues in Minnesota, although it was relaxed somewhat to allow several additional businesses to go back to work. Those who perform lawn and garden services, landscaping, and golf course management are among those getting the ok to resume work. It’s hoped the governor will allow more companies to call employees back in coming days if they can demonstrate social distancing in their work places.

It’s my opinion that folks are becoming more restless and concerned about their financial future, especially following last week’s announcement that the stay-home order would continue until at least May 4.

With the date of May 15 being when the first half of property taxes are due, there is talk of somehow moving that date back.

Only the Legislature can officially grant an extension of the due date. However, counties could decide to waive penalties and interest on payments made after May 15, effectively doing the same thing. That could be of great help to those out of work or to businesses that have been shut down and have no income source.

I would support a 30- or 60-day period, during which there would be no penalties for late payment. One thing to keep in mind with such a plan, however, is that it would affect other jurisdictions as well. School districts, cities and townships would also be in line for late tax settlements, as would any other special assessments levied on property.

Something else being discussed in at least one area county is a pro-rated discount on liquor licenses. It’s only fair, during the time bars or restaurants are forced to be closed except for take-out orders, that the cost of their on-sale liquor license be adjusted to reflect the loss of potential busi-

ness. That decision would be up to counties and cities where those establishments are located.

One of the governor’s executive orders that could use some revision is the one dealing with a three-month moratorium on foreclosures and utility disconnects. I understand the reasoning behind the order, in that if someone is out of work and can’t pay those bills, they should have additional time to come up with the money necessary. However, there are no guard rails with the order and it says that anybody can stop paying their rent. That would include those who are still working and basically unaffected financially by the stay-at-home order.

I think we are setting up for a bigger problem three months down the road when the entire amount of back rent is due. There is legislation being discussed where the state would step in and make these rental payments, but again there needs to be some guidance regarding who would be eligible for this assistance.

We go back into session again this week on Tuesday the 14th. Last week’s session marked the first time remote voting was done in the Minnesota House. Many of us who live a great distance from St. Paul were at home and voted over our phones.

The process worked, but each vote taken was by roll call, and that was a bit cumbersome.

Obituaries

Richard Anders Hammarsten

R i c h a r d A n d e r s Hammarsten, 69, left this world after a short, but mighty fight with neuroendocrine cancer on April 8, 2020.

He was born June 28, 1950 in Richfield, MN, went to grade schools in Minnesota and Oklahoma, graduating high school from Casady. He obtained his B.S. from Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, his M.B.A. from Duke University, and his J.D. from University of Tulsa College of Law. His interest in wills and probate led him to a lifelong career working for bank trust departments, with his last years spent as the internal trust auditor for BancFirst.

In 1979 Richard married the love of his life, Cathy Clendenin, of Oklahoma City.

He was proudly supportive of her through her years of law school, and into her many years as a public defender. Together Richard and Cathy lived and worked in wonderful cities; Phoenix, St. Louis, Tacoma, Salt Lake and Oklahoma City. Richard was a world traveler when he met Cathy, and together they were able to continue that passion, making repeated trips to Richard’s favorite cities of Budapest and Paris. Richard loved dogs. He and Cathy’s steady stream of rescues provided him great joy. Richard was also a sports fan and loved all sports trivia, without regard to team loyalty.

Richard is survived by his wife, Cathy, as well as his sister, Linnea Ingold (Harry, d 2002), sister in law, Beth Hammarsten (James, d. 2016), sister in law, Ann Clendenin (Lydia Moore, d. 1994), brother in law, James Clendenin (Paula Radosevich, d.

2015), and brother in law Steven Clendenin and wife, Karol. Richard is also survived by several aunts and uncles, including special aunts, Judy Hammarsten Jarsko, and Sharon Wolf Lafferty, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, all of whom were important to him. He is especially missed by his niece Krystal Clendenin Launius of Louisiana and his cousin, Iina Hammarsten of Turku, Finland.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothea Jung Hammarsten and Dr. James Francis Hammarsten, as well as his brother, Dr. James Eric Hammarsten. He is also preceded in death by his parents in law, James Philip Clendenin and Mary Wolf Clendenin.

Robert “Bob” Tomsche COVID‐19 Update: Confirmed Cases in Robert J. “Bob” Tomsche, age 84 of Sauk Centre, passed away Friday, April 10, 2020 at his home in The Villages, Florida.

A memorial service will be held at a later date after restrictions are lifted.

Robert John Tomsche was born October 20, 1935 in Albany, Minnesota to Emil and Christine (Broker) Tomsche. Bob attended Holy Family School in Albany for eight years and four years at Albany High School. He continued his education at St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1965.

Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed in Wurzburg, Germany. On June 22, 1963 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Sadlowsky at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. The couple moved to Sauk Centre in July of 1965 and purchased the Sauk Centre Fleet Supply on south Main Street. A new building was built in 1969 at the present location.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 67, and member and past president of the Chamber of Commerce. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing. He regularly traveled to Canada on fishing trips with his sons and grandsons.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Tomsche of Sauk Centre; children, Kim Tomsche of Mankato, Todd Tomsche of Long Prairie, Kelly (Mark) Winter of St. Joseph, Mark Tomsche of Sauk Centre, and Mike (Susan) Tomsche of Eden Prairie; nine grandchildren, Matt and Sarah Winter, Ashley Tomsche, Amanda, Marcus, Jacob, and Allison Tomsche, and Michael and Chloe Tomsche; five great-grandchildren, Mason and Kylie Winter, Hayleigh Primus, Brooklynn Magnuson, and Lilah Tomsche; brothers and sisters, Edward (Theresa) Tomsche of Melrose, Dorothy (Ben) Schaefer of Fairfax, Virginia, Thomas (Marlyn) Tomsche of Albany, Agnes Cushing of The Villages, Florida, and Mary Lou (Whitey) Christenson of Paynesville.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents.

LeRoy Schultz

L e R o y Schultz, 88, of Long Prairie passed away on April 3, 2020.

A private family interment was held at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery in Long Prairie.

LeRoy was born October 11, 1931, in Long Prairie to Edward & Ella (Dehn) Schultz. He graduated from Long Prairie High School and in 1950 joined the National Guard. LeRoy married Roselyn Mollner in 1955; they had three children: Candace, LeRoy Edward and Paul.

LeRoy worked for many years at Starry Construction and Central Specialties as a mechanic. He was a member of St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents; children: Candace and Paul; siblings: Roselyn Blais, Ellen Peterson, Dale Schultz and Daniel Schultz.

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 63 years Roselyn, son LeRoy Edward (Jane) Schultz of Eagle Bend, 5 grandchildren: Jill, Jaculyn, Nikki, Randi and Cody; 8 great grandchildren and sister Donna Schneekloth of Long Prairie.

Todd County

On the evening of April 11, 2020, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reported to Todd County Health & Human Services there was one lab confirmed COVID-19 case. This individual is in their 80s, had community exposure, and is self-isolating.

On April 12, 2020, the Minnesota Department of Health reported two lab confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Todd County on their website. As of April 12, 2020, Todd County Health & Human Services became aware of a second lab confirmed case of COVID-19. This individual is in their 50s and their condition and likely exposure is unknown at this time.

To protect the confidentiality of each lab confirmed COVID-19 case, the Minnesota Department of Health provides Todd County Health & Human Services with limited information on each case.

Todd County HHS is only able to disclose the following information on each lab confirmed COVID-19 case, if available: a. County of residence b. Age range c. Reported medical condition (i.e., self-isolating, hospitalized) d. Likely exposure method (i.e., com-

munity spread, travel) The Minnesota Department of Health is conducting the investigation for each confirmed COVID-19 case. At this time, Todd County Health & Human Services is not involved in investigating confirmed COVID-19 cases or their immediate contacts. Todd County Health & Human Services is continuing to actively monitor the spread of COVID-19 in Todd County with local community partners, and state and federal agencies, and will alert the public if more information can be shared.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

We All Can Play a Part in Building Community, Building Hope April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Sexual assault Awareness Month

By Connie Nelson, Hands of Hope Resource Center Let’s be honest, sex is not a comfortable conversation for many, and when you add the word violence to it, it becomes even more uncomfortable.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and over the years, we have had many different themes for our conversations about sex and sexual violence.

Themes such as “Choose Respect,” “Prevention is Possible,” “Embrace Your Voice,” and “I Ask.” All these themes are meant to bring awareness to all of us about safe, healthy relationships, and the crime of sexual assault. For some of us this issue will not be a part of our lives, or will it?

One in three females and one in six males will experience some type of sexual assault in their lifetime. These assaults are happening to children, teenagers, adults and yes even senior citizens, with an assault happening every 92 seconds in the United States. Reality is that two thirds of these assaults are never reported to anyone, as victims fear not being believed, feel ashamed and are self-blaming. Some victims will however report, but then again survivors deal with disbelief, a lack of understanding as to “why did they wait

so long to report,” and also those who refuse to believe that anything like that could be happening in their community.

One more factor that is difficult to comprehend, is that most offenders of sexual assault are people that the victim/survivor knows, a friend, relative, teacher, intimate partner, which plays a huge role in a survivor’s silence.

Sexual assault is defined as any sexual activity engaged in without explicit consent of the other party. So, no means no, not now means no, I’m tired means no, I’m not sure means no, silence means no. Anything other than “YES” means “NO.” In our society, we need to learn to respect each other, value our right to make choices and learn about boundaries and to respect those boundaries. Life would be much simpler for all. Survivors need to be believed and supported, and a clear message needs to be sent to everyone, and that is that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of any crime #sexual violence, as that shame lies only with the aggressor.

Martin Luther, who is recognized for his work in reforming the church, had one deep desire that drove him every day of his life: he wanted everyone to have a copy of the Bible and a song book in their own language. He had an unswerving belief that people needed God to speak to them directly through His Word and the songs they sang during times of worship at home. This was not a new idea, but one that had its beginnings in the earliest worship of the Lord.

Music and God’s Word have always been a very important ingredient in worship. When there is joy in the hearts

of the faithful, praising God is a natural part of life and is always evident in times of worship. With shame and sorrow the captives of Babylon admitted this in Psalm 137:4. As their captors ridiculed them for it they said, “How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?” Sin separated them from God and they lost the joy of their salvation. It will do the same to us.

In the Old Testament we find many occasions of God’s children coming together to sing and shout and praise the Lord. In Psalm 95:1 the “worship leader” looked at the crowd before him and said let’s “sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.” That invitation remains open to us today.

When we pause and ponder the grace of God in saving us and becoming our “Rock” - our only source of safety and security in times of trial and temptation, defeat and despair - it’s time to lift our voices in worship.

Automotive Advice from The Under the Hood® Show

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2017 Chevy Cruise and I’ve put over 190k miles on the car. During that time, I’ve had to replace three turbo chargers. One was under warranty and the other two I paid regular price for. After looking across the internet I have found many people who have had to replace theirs. Are these turbos no good or do I need to do other things to the car to make them last? I change the oil every 6k miles regularly.

-Johnathan in Rochester, MN Well, three turbos on this engine in 190k miles is not unheard of. We’ve seen cars with 200k with one turbo but not too many in our own shop. We do tend to see many more with early failures when the car is either driven hard such as on a long drive then shut off right away so the turbo does not have time to cool down and when the oil is not changed often enough. 6k miles is a long time on one of these cars. We recommend around 4k miles to our customers and they seem to have better luck. Small engines with high horsepower generate a lot of heat and the engine oil is the lifeblood of the engine. When the oil starts to break down it no longer protects and will start to burn on the turbo bearings. On another note we don’t see many of these engines last over 200k miles.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I’m on my second rear wiring harness and side obstacle detection sensors on my 2016 Chevrolet Impala. The first set went out when the car was only three days out of warranty, but I only had 22k miles on the car. I really thought that was low mileage for something like this to fail. It cost me almost $1500.00 to repair it. They told me that both sensors located in the rear bumper area had water and salt get into them and that it damaged the sensor and the harness,

so they had to replace them both. The second set only lasted another 10k miles and two years. Is there any way I can just have the system shut off so I don’t get the warning light, and why are they so cheap?

The Impala has two sensors located on the rear bumper cover and they have a weather resistant connector facing forward. Not a weatherproof connector. If we had designed it, we would have faced the connector towards the rear because the rear tires throw dirt and water directly into the connector causing the failure. The back side is usually almost clean. It is not a very good design in our opinion. As for shutting it off it can’t be done, not legally anyways. It is a factory safety system and disabling by a shop is not allowed.
