Knowledge is the treasure of a wise person -By Harvey Mackay A giant ship’s engine failed, and the vessel’s owners consulted one expert after another, but none of them could fix the engine. They finally brought in an old man who had been fixing ship engines since he was very young. After looking things over, the old man reached into his bag of tools and pulled out a small hammer and gently tapped something. Instantly the engine started and was fixed.

A week later the owners received a bill from the old man for $10,000 and couldn’t believe it. In their eyes he hadn’t done much, so they wrote him back and asked for an itemized bill.

His bill read: “Tapping with a hammer = $2. Knowing where to tap = $9,998.”

We’ve all heard that “knowledge is power,” but there’s one caveat: It still must be used. I like to say knowledge without action is worthless. It’s not what you know, or even who you know – it’s how you use what you know.

Knowledge is more readily accessible today than at any time in our history thanks to the internet, 24/7 cable TV, online media and so on.

We start absorbing knowledge as infants and continue the process through years of schooling. Really smart people don’t stop learning then, however. Being a student of life will provide practical knowledge that continues for a lifetime.

As Jim Rohn, a motivational genius, said, “Formal education will make you a living; selfeducation will make you a fortune.”

It’s all about learning as much as you can to make yourself more marketable. Building knowledge has so many benefits, as seen in the following.

Knowledge creates opportunities, as any entrepreneur will tell you. They identify a need and seize it. They look for opportunities for

learning and growth.

Knowledge helps you minimize risks and make better decisions. When you are informed, you make better choices, so do your homework and learn as much as you can. I always check with people I trust to give me guidance from all sides.

Knowledge helps you solve problems by using the information you have at hand or learning how to deal with issues. Knowledge allows you to handle adversity and persevere.

Knowledge improves relationships. When I meet with employees, customers, suppliers or anyone with whom I want to develop a relationship, I try to learn as much as I can about those persons and make note of the information for future use, which I compile in a tool I call the Mackay 66 Customer Profile. A copy is available on my website (harveymackay.com).

You can only talk about business so much. Your people are not one-dimensional, so you must humanize your strategy. People don’t care how much you know about them once they know how much you care about them.

I also pass along my knowledge to my valuable employees, customers and contacts. I tell them I’m available 24/7, and to call me if they ever have a need. I’ve built my business on this philosophy.

Knowledge can keep your business relevant. Change is inevitable; you need to be aware of new technologies, advancements and improvements. What you don’t know can hurt you. Just ask Blockbuster, Kodak, RadioShack, Toys R Us or Pier 1 Imports.

Knowledge can certainly improve your health and well-being. I am always studying

ways to improve my health, whether through nutrition, exercise, sleep or whatever will allow me to live a better life.

Knowledge can also improve your finances. According to an article in “Forbes Magazine,” 54 percent of Americans are having trouble with some aspect of their financial lives.

There is so much information available in this area that there is no excuse not to learn.

Knowledge might be most important in the customer service area where companies must identify the needs and wants of their target audiences. Nothing is more important than customer service. Don't wait for customers to tell you there's a problem. Go out and ask them if there's a problem.

Having and using knowledge will never go out of style.

At a 1962 dinner for the American Nobel Prize recipients, President John F. Kennedy celebrated the importance of knowledge. He said: “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House – with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”

Mackay’s Moral: Knowledge is like a garden; if it is not cultivated, it cannot be harvested.

wouldn't see the smoke rise. Communications definitely needed improvement.

Next communication improvement was the telegraph. The first telegraph lines were constantly being interrupted by the bad guys, who pulled over the poles or cut the wires.

Remember that the bad guys didn't want the good guys to be able to communicate.

The telephone began with a wood box on the wall, followed by dialing on the phone.

Since in the 1960's, it needed to become more convenient, push buttons were installed on the phones. Cell phones started in the 1970's, so both good and bad guys could communicate from a pickup, a car, their home or office or if needed, from the back of a horse.

The newer movies were at least 90 minutes long with the actors sleeping indoors and eating at the saloon and driving a hot vehicle. Evidently the commonly served baked beans had been replaced by meat and potatoes.

It seems that the newer the movie is, the longer the main character's hair have become.

Originally, the main good guy's hair were styled by a barber in the WWII style. The newer movies also have become based more on hatred, bloody close-ups and someone trying to repay for a previous wrong-doing.

The newer movies are still able to let the viewer know in the first 5 minutes who were the good guys and who needed to be injured to prove justice had been served. The good guy usually was alive when the movie ends. Is this

When viewing western movies today, it is possible to guess the year they were produced.

There have been some changes that help the viewer make a decision.

One obvious hint is that those in the cast may no longer be with us.

That will involve movies up to the 1950's. The movies that were made before 1960, are probably still in black and white, since Technicolor, etc. came along in the 1960's.

If you are watching westerns, the older ones usually were about an hour long, as the newer ones may be as long as two hours. The older westerns usually involved herding or moving cattle, eating from the chuck wagon, fighting Indians and sleeping under the stars.

They usually had trouble with cattle rustlers or a very important man, who didn't want the cast driving cattle across the land that he thought was his, since he had acquired that land in his own mind many years ago. There were always problems and the favorite actor was always able to find the right solution, since his character was given the moral high ground and his opponents wore dirty clothes, were uncouth, were immoral, wore dark hats and hadn't shaved in over a week. With a small amount of concentration, one can notice that the good guys chasing the bad guys involved riding the horses past the same rocks several times during one chase. And everybody hated fences.

Another way to tell what time period was involved is to check out the method of communication. The very old ones required taking a two day ride back to the fort to report to the commander, who probably was either stupid or had criminal intentions either to advance his military position or improve his own economic position. The natives used smoke signals, which may have been a few days late because the constant windy conditions made the smoke move at ground level, so those they were wanting to communicate with,

Obituaries

Florence A. Schurman

Florence Arelia Schurman, age 93 of Sauk Centre passed away March 31, 2022, her work on earth was done, and she was welcomed home. May she be blessed by God and greeted by the angels in heaven.

Details will follow regarding a date and time for a public celebration of life to be held in Florence's honor.

Florence Schurman was born on the family farm in New Munich. She was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Lizzy) Brickweg. She and her husband Bud were married on October 21, 1948. They worked side by side tirelessly pouring their heart and soul into the family farm and the road construction business that they owned. Florence was strong, determined, and fiercely independent.

She understood what it was like to serve; she was a part of countless mission trips to remote places like Tonga, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers since 1950. Because she loved children, she spent 30+ years volunteering her time to the Holy Family School lunch program since 1989.

She was a lively presence at Carefree Travel.

Her travels brought her to virtually every continent but Antarctica. From riding elephants to hiking the remote villages in Vietnam, she lived for the thrill of the adventure. She said, "If I don't do it at 90, I never will. So let's go do it."

She loved all animals and will be fondly remembered around town with her 4-legged friend Brandi beside her, strolling down the Lake Wobegon Trail. Feeding the birds was a passion of hers. In the past, traveling to horse shows was another one of her joys. One of her greatest delights was going to the Timberwolves games and meeting Ricky Rubio. At 90 years old that was a thrill. She treasured her children and grandchildren and embraced any time spent with them. She never gave up until dementia took her away from us.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Streese; sister, Rita Loxtercamp; daughter in law, Jane Schurman; 4 grandchildren, Jessica (Jon) Ferris, Jay Schurman (Leah), Jacob Schurman (Catie) and Jenna (Ben) Clink, and 12 greatgrandchildren with her first great-grandchild on the way.

Florence was sadly predeceased by her parents, her husband Bud "Virgil" Schurman; son, Jerry Schurman; brothers, Herman Brickweg, Tom Brickweg, and Joe Brickweg; sister Marie Christen.

When you walk along a beach at sunset and see the ocean shimmer in last light of day or see the mountains rise up from the plains, stand in wonder and think of Florence. When you hear the first songbirds of spring or breathe the crisp air at the last harvest of fall, remember Florence. When you see a child delight at the county fair, smile for Mom. This was her joy and heartbeat, and she would wish nothing less for you.

Rose Ann Stoermann

Rose Ann Stoermann, age 86 of St. Rosa, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 8, 2022 at the Saint Cloud Hospital in Saint Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, April 13 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Rose Ann Stoermann was born March 20, 1936 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Joseph and Marie (Stoetzel) Bernet. She married Raymond Stoermann on June 23, 1977 in Milbank, South Dakota. Together they farmed the Stoermann Family Farm north of St. Rosa for many years. Along with farming, Rose Ann did bookkeeping and income taxes throughout her life.

She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. She also served as a clerk on the Millwood Township Board. Rose Ann enjoyed traveling, going to the casino, setting jig-saw puzzles, playing cards, watching the game show network and movies.

Survivors include by her husband, Ray Stoermann of St. Rosa; children, Charles Kunkel (significant other, Terri S.) of Faribault, Tim Kunkel of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Bill Kunkel (significant other, Liz) of Breckenridge, Colorado, Kurt (Jamie) Kunkel of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Jim Kunkel of Suisun City, California, Joe (Deb) Kunkel of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Rick Stoermann of San Diego, California, Bob Stoermann of St. Rosa, and Scott (Debbie) Stoermann of St. Rosa; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Sr. Maurita Bernet, O.S.F. of Little Falls and Peg Huffman of Phoenix, Arizona.

Rose Ann was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Agnes (Virgil) Decker, Terri (Dick) Petron, Joan Bernet, Joseph Bernet, and infant sister, Bernadette Bernet; brother-in-law, Ed Huffman; grandchildren, Jason Kunkel and Heath Kunkel; great-grandchildren, Rian Stock and Atticus Kunkel.

Serving as urn bearer was Tyler Stoermann, cross bearer was Cody Stoermann, and scripture bearer was Christopher Stock. Reader was Kendra Wimmer. Gift bearers were Chuck Kunkel, Sr. Maurita Bernet, O.S.F, and Josie Stoermann.

Honorary bearers were Louis Kunkel, Jeremy Kunkel, Dylan Kunkel, Logan Kunkel, Anna Stoermann, and Kendra Wimmer.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Claude Jospeh Yurczyk

Mass of Christian burial was held Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala for Claude J. Yurczyk, age 88, of Swanville who peacefully passed away Friday April 8, 2022. Father David Grundman officiated.

Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.

Arrangements were made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Claude was born March 16, 1934, on the farm near Saint Wendel to Julius and Adelia (Masog) Yurczyk. He grew up near Saint Wendel, then joined the Army and served in the Korean war from April 13, 1954 to April 13, 1956, and later he got married to the love of his life Janet Dingmann on May 28, 1960, in St. Francis. He later farmed near Upsala. Claude worked in farming his whole life. He enjoyed farming and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed gardening, growing sweet corn, playing cards, hunting, fishing, trapping, and reading. He was a member of American Legion Post 350 in Upsala and a lifetime member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church of Upsala.

Claude is survived by his wife of 62 years, the secret is to always listen to your wife; children, Duane (Lisa) Yurczyk, Swanville; Sharon (Tim) Bartkowitz, Sobieski; Edward Yurczyk, Melrose; Diane (Brian) Harren, Inver Grove Heights; and Donald (Michelle) Yurczyk, Albany; thirteen grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Linus (Marilyn) Yurczyk, St. Joseph, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers; Norbert Yurczyk, Dennis Yurczyk, David Yurczyk; and infant sister Patricia Yurczyk.

Harold “Harry” Dale Erickson, age 85, drove his John Deere to Heaven on April 8, 2022.Born of Christ & Clarice (Berry) Erickson in Burtrum, MN on August 6th 1936.

Harry grew up on the family dairy farm in Burtrum, MN and graduated from Grey Eagle High School. After graduation he moved to St. Paul where he met and married Carol Simons. They had four children, Jeff, Tom, Dan & Lisa. Later they moved to Linwood, MN. In 1998 he married Linda Amundson, who had two children, Denise & David. Harry retired from 3M after 32 years and also served 15+ years on the Linwood Volunteer Fire Department. Harry loved his family, his 1936 B. John Deere tractor, his concertina & his motorcycle. He also loved to travel, fishing, enjoying nature and the MN Twins & Vikings.

Survived by loving wife, Linda; children, Jeff (Connie), Tom (Shareen), Dan (Robin), Lisa (Jamey), Denise (Bryan) Weis, David (Jennifer) Rands; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Audrey (Ken) Stevens, Norma (Howard Cary) Niemeyer; sisters-in-law, Annette, Shirley; brother-in-law, Jerry (Brita) Amundson; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

Anna Z. “Ann” Hinnenkamp, age 101 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, April 19 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the church. The Christian Women will pray at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Anna Zita Bertram was born August 18, 1920 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to Joseph and Katherine (Hemmesch) Bertram. She attended Spring Hill Elementary School through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Isidore Hinnenkamp on September 22, 1943 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. The couple farmed five miles northwest of Sauk Centre where Ann was a housewife and mother.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Women. Ann enjoyed playing piano, sewing, quilting, playing cards, and gardening, especially flowers. She loved all music in general, but her favorite was old time music. Ann also enjoyed dancing, baking, and mowing the lawn.

Survivors include her children, JoAnn Stuckel of Independence, Missouri, Rosie Winter of Sauk Centre, Geri (Mike) Ebensteiner of Edmond, Oklahoma, Karen (Raleigh) Hinnenkamp-Milton of Welcome, Maryland, and Allen Hinnenkamp of Sauk Centre; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Isidore Hinnenkamp; parents; grandson, Chad Christopher Ebensteiner; brothers and sisters, Leo Bertram, Nick Bertram, Mary Lieser, Loretta Lieser, Clarence Bertram, Alois Bertram, Aurelia Sunderman, and Catherine Lieser; infant sister, Theresa Bertram; and sons-in-law, Don Stuckel and Larry Winter.

Dear Motor Medics, We purchased a two-year-old Ford truck that has the flex fuel option.

I’ve never owned a flex fuel vehicle so I read the owner’s manual and at your suggestion went to fueleconomy. gov to get an idea of what kind of mileage it should get. They claim about five mpg more than what we are getting. The truck was a lease vehicle and has about 70,000 miles which seems high for two years, but they say it was taken care of. What can we do to improve the fuel economy? 10mpg on the highway for most of the time using e85 seems very low. Your answers are always appreciated.

-Darren in Lemmon, SD Dear Darren, Driving the truck primarily on the highway and assuming it’s in perfect tune, you are not carrying extra weight, and you are using no ethanol fuel, it should do better. With 70,000 miles on the truck even though they claim it has been well taken care of it likely has not had much work done in the way of tuning. It’s two years old, it just doesn’t happen much. Without a fuel system cleaning you can lose a couple mpg and using e85 will take another couple. Being flex fuel you can use a blend. If available, try 30% and check the mileage. That percentage has resulted in an increase for many of our customers with flex fuel vehicles over e85 or nothing.

-Todd in Yankton, SD Dear Todd, Yes Saturn is gone but this vehicle shares many of the common drivetrain parts with other vehicles and the aftermarket makes many commonly used parts for popular vehicles, so you don’t have to rely solely on the manufacturer.

For most unique parts like body and interior that are still available you would purchase them through a GM store. Many companies that are still in business today have discontinued less popular parts to save money and they can be tricky to find. Popularity commonly drives what is available. We have found ourselves looking for parts on a three-year-old vehicle that is out of warranty and at times just could not come up with a new part. In most cases we were able to find a good used part as an option and get the customer going and save them some money as well.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce: Good or Bad Upsala High School 2021-2022 Fall Semester Have you ever wondered why Good Fri- good about Good Friday?

Honor Roll day is called good? I have. I mean look at the Let me tell you. As for me… I am a sinner events of the week. This happened the day after Jesus was at a feast in His honor put on by Mary and Martha because Jesus had raised their brother from the dead. These are things I call good and maybe even great. My wife and I have four children and sometimes there are bad things that happen to your children… just the thought of this gives us a heavy heart. Most of the time we cannot do anything about their agony and pain.

On Good Friday God’s Son, Jesus Christ had a mock trial, then they beat Him, and put a crown of thorns on his head (after all He was a king). They blindfolded Him and hit him, and said, Prophesy, who hit you. They made a mockery out of everything that Jesus stood for.

The sad part was, just less than a week earlier, they wanted to make Him king. So, what is so

and the penalty for my sin is death or separation from God for all eternity. Hell, is where I end up, and I endure the rest of eternity in agony, separated from God's grace. The alternative is better than good, it is incredibly awesome! 1 Peter 2:24 says it all… “He himself bore our sins, in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

Even though this is great news for us, not everyone will experience this sort of healing or forgiveness. Only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ will experience life everlasting, in heaven, with all sins forgiven. Acts 16:31 “They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved-you and your household.”

Letter to the Editor: Dear neighbors

By Sherry Kutter, Grey Eagle The international high gas prices and international inflation are tough on everyone except for the oil industry executives and their investors. Consider doing an online search for “oil industry record profits”. They have skyrocketed. We hear much about energy independence these days but the oil industry will sell to the highest bidder regardless of where they are in the world. If the energy that is currently produced in America stayed in America we would be energy independent. Consider that production in the Bakken Oil Fields of ND has dropped significantly but may be ramping up now due to the high prices we are paying at the pump. Another reason that the oil industry continues to make record profits is that we, as taxpayers, are funding trillions of dollars in subsidies that were intended to support the new fossil fuels industries over a century ago.

It is time to shift those subsidies and support to local, sustainable energy. The effects of our changing climate and weather patterns are cre-

ating billion-dollar disasters all over the world.

We must be alert and know that the fossil fuel industry will spend billions to lobby politicians as well as convince us that sustainable energy production is bad. They want the money all to go to themselves and will even pay certain news media to tell us that story.

Solar and wind energy production is ramping up because it is cost-effective, efficient, and profitable. The big deal about these renewable energy sources is that they don’t destroy our climate, water, and health as the fossil fuel and ethanol industry does. We can even produce this energy locally rather than getting our fuel from Texas and beyond. Putin doesn’t own the sun or the wind. Imagine taking back energy and even food production from distant corporations. It will be better for our health, our planet, and our future generations. Let’s ignore the corporate and media hype and produce it locally and keep the profit local. Let’s support our political leaders who support us, sustainable energy, and local food production.

Reynolds encourages residents to use alternatives to burning to dispose of yard waste, such as composting, chipping, or taking brush to a collection site. For more information, visit the wildfire prevention page of the DNR website (mndnr.gov/Wildfire/ Prevention).

People cause 90% of wildfires in Minnesota. If a debris fire rekindles or escapes, the person who set it is liable for any damage caused, as well as for wildfire suppression costs.

GREY EAGLE TOWNSHIP Beach and Public Boat Access Maintenance

Grey Eagle Township is looking for someone to maintain the swimming beach on Big Birch Lake and the public boat access area. Duties would include putting in the dock and fall removal, general clean-up and mowing as needed. Interested applicant must be at least 16 years old and provide proof of insurance. Spring burning restrictions begin in Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is restricting open burning due to increased wildfire risk from warm temperatures and dry conditions.

The restrictions apply in the following counties: Anoka, Benton, Chisago, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Ramsey, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd, Washington, and Wright.

The DNR will not issue permits for open burning of brush or yard waste in these counties until restrictions are lifted.

“Wildfire risk increases each year after the snow melts and before grass greens up,” said Allissa Reynolds, DNR wildfire prevention supervisor. “Spring burning restrictions help to reduce the number of wildfires, especially those caused by debris burning.”
