Humor works at work -By Harvey Mackay

Life is funny, the saying goes.

And when it isn’t funny, sometimes a sense of humor is what gets us through the tough times.

H u m o r plays a special role at work. As critical as it is to take your work seriously, it is equally important to NOT take yourself too seriously.

Many years ago, a Fortune Magazine article talked about how executives should be funnier. I remember it well, because one of my biggest pet peeves is people who cannot laugh at themselves.

The wonderful example the magazine used involved auto executive Eugene Cafiero.

When he was president of Chrysler, Cafiero went to England to meet with troubled employees at the company’s plant there. Conflict between management and union employees was tense. As Cafiero entered the plant he was confronted by a man who loudly said, “I’m Eddie McClusky, and I’m a communist.”

The composed Chrysler executive extended his hand and replied, “How do you do. I’m Eugene Cafiero, and I’m a Presbyterian.” The subsequent laughter squelched this potentially explosive confrontation.

“A sense of humor is the one thing no one will admit not having,” said Mark Twain. A good sense of humor helps to overlook the unbecoming, understand the unconventional, tolerate the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected and outlast the unbearable.

I like to say if you can’t take a joke, then you’ll have to take the medicine.

That can be a bitter pill to swallow.

Think about your co-workers who you most enjoy working with: They typically have a good perspective on the importance of specific projects, get work finished on time, offer to help out when it’s crunch time, and keep a smile on their faces through it all. And they often manage to put a smile on your face too.

Humor can make unpleasant tasks more palatable. It can diffuse difficult situations and improve already good relations.

I have a friend in a business that you would usually not associate with humor – he’s a funeral director. He doesn’t joke around about the seriousness of his work, but he does encourage his clients to allow

themselves to laugh and share humorous memories about their loved ones. He says it helps break the tension and brings comfort to a trying situation.

There is plenty of evidence to support the benefits of humor at work. In a new study, researchers from Harvard’s Business School found that cracking jokes at work show your employer an increased perception of confidence and competence.

The study shows the most effective joke tellers are more likely to be chosen as a group leader. Just make sure the jokes in the office are appropriate. Researchers found inappropriate jokes lead to a perception of low competence. In other words, save the locker room banter and personal insults. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Yesterday’s kids

From time to time today’s young people ask what we did as kids.

How did we spend our time?

What did we do for fun? Did we ever get together with other kids?

These are good questions, since the things which occupy the young people’s time today didn’t exist years ago. They probably didn’t have a telephone and if there was one in the house, it was for “important” parent calls. They didn’t have computers, computer games, cell phones and if there was a TV, it was a black and white screen with so much snow and interference, the picture could only be seen part of the time.

They probably didn’t have or use their own car to drive to school, that was what the school bus was for.

Kids were often part of a much larger family than we have today. The older siblings helped to care for their younger brothers and sisters. The boys also had numerous chores to do on the farm. The girls learned general housework and meal preparation. Growing and harvesting the garden vegetables involved all the family members.

If our work was done, we were able to spend time doing “kid stuff.”

We would walk over to see some of the neighbor kids. These visits usually

involved new and exciting ideas of things to do. Talking, playing games, pestering their farm animals, fishing or exploration of their woods usually occupied our time. Whether we were hunting, building forts in the woods or helping the neighbor kids with their chores, the change made it a fun time.

One of our neighbors had a natural swimming pool in his woods. The pool was totally spring fed, so it was a really cool place to go skinny dipping on a hot summer evening. This was fun until some ground bees took up residence on the edge of the pool. Since we weren’t clothed, the bees had lots of excellent targets for their stingers. After they calmed down, we went back to retrieve our clothes and didn’t swim there the rest of that summer.

After unloading the last load of haybales in the evening, we would be very dusty and itchy. Since my cousin would drive tractor to our farm to help with hay making, we would sometimes drive his tractor to a local lake, drive it out into the water and jump, fully clothed, into the water. A couple of minutes in the lake was very refreshing. The ride back home on the tractor really cooled you off.

A neighbor boy had a shack he built in the woods. We would sometimes spend the night there. As young boys, we enjoyed conversation late into the night. These conversations included some jokes and stories that were sometimes the kind of stories not told at church. One night the jokes were being shared, along with a good amount

anyway.

The most difficult part of using humor at work is knowing where to draw the line. You can joke with a customer, but never about a customer. You can tease your co-workers, or even your boss, but when it gets personal or hurtful, you are in dangerous territory. Refer to the Golden Rule if you are wondering if your remarks are appropriate: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you have to ask someone, you already have your answer. No joke is funny if you are the only one laughing.

Here’s a great take on how one company used humor – as an April Fool’s joke – to deal with requests for taking a day off: • There are 365 days per year available for work.

• There are 52 weeks per year in which you already have two days off per week, leaving 261 days available for work.

• Since you spend 16 hours each day away from work, you have used up 170 days, leaving only 91 days available.

• You spend 30 minutes each day on coffee breaks; that accounts for 23 days each year, leaving only 68 days available.

We were not sure if we should run or just stay there and prepare for a punishment. He just turned around and walked back home. He never spoke to us about the evening in the future. Got lucky there!

Can A ‘Yes’ Cost You Money? - By John Young The phone rings, you check the caller ID and don’t recognize the phone number.

“Hello?” you say. There isn’t an immediate answer.

(Background noise) “Hi! Goodness, this phone is just acting up again today!

Can you hear me ok?”

An innocent question that one would tend to answer without thinking twice.

“Yes, I can hear you ok.”

BUT, this is a recent scam allowing scammers to steal your “Yes” for later use.

Why would they want that? What can they do with that?

Plenty these days! Many transactions online can now be authorized with just your “Yes” and it can cost you a TON. With a bit of information they find on the internet about you (yes, it is out there if you know how to look) they can charge things to a variety of your accounts.

These calls are most often something called a robo call. This is a computer programmed to interact with a caller. The lines they read are recorded and the computer on the other end can distinguish between some statements you say and then can respond in a way that sounds like a live, reacting person! Their goal is to get the audio they need to steal your identity for future damage to your finances. You will also have some of these scam calls that are utilizing a live person on the other end of the line. But in this day of automation, they can have computers calling much cheaper than a live person.

What should you do? First off, if you don’t recognize the phone number, let it go to voice mail. swering (robo calling systems will dial dozens of numbers at the same time and once a person picks up, the system routes it to the first live person on their end) it is most likely a solicitor or scammer. Now, there ARE some legitimate calls that start like this. When I travel, my credit card companies call and sound like this when they are confirming charges. So, it isn’t always an easy way to sort out incoming calls.

Secondly, if you are asked a question right away that would typically be answered with a “Yes,” pause, and give them a “I don’t understand?” This can cause the system to repeat the same question, which will let you know if it is a computer system fishing for your “Yes” and it is time to hang up!

These calls have been coming to land line phones most of the time. Yet, now they are starting to hit cell phone numbers also. If you are finding you are getting a few of these calls from the same number, you can block that fairly easily via your iPhone (learn how to do this at http://www.

Typically, they can change their caller ID number from call to call and from area code to area code so you can’t block them very easily.

The best one I have seen was when my phone’s caller ID showed MY phone number as calling myself. That was really a ‘I don’t understand’ moment!’

Obituaries Richard L. Zarns

Richard Lee (Dick) Zarns, 71 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away suddenly Sunday, April 2, 2017 while vacationing in Hawaii. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial was at the St. John’s Parish Cemetery in Swanville.

Dick was born January 3, 1946 in Little Falls, MN to the late Fred and Faye Zarns.

He grew up in Swanville and graduated from Swanville High School in 1964. He married his soulmate Zita Frank on April 30, 1966.

Dick joined the Army National Guard in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1969. He and Zita resided in New Brighton where they raised their family. He enjoyed making skis at Hart Ski, then moved into the trucking industry for the remainder of his career. After retiring from

LouAnn M. Schultz, age 76 of Albany, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

Inurnment was at Our Savior’s Lutheran Cemetery.

LouAnn Marilyn Starry was born November 15, 1940 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to Fred and Una (Thiegs) Starry. She attended the catholic school into her middle school years, then graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1958. LouAnn figure skated when she was in her younger years and as she got older she enjoyed watching it on TV. She married Dale Schultz on August 3, 1963 at Long Prairie Catholic Church in Long Prairie.

Dick enjoyed retirement and kept busy with new activities including: wine making, canning, making maple syrup, playing cards with his buddies, and his newest project, whittling canes. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing with his snow plow, tractors, and other big toys. You may have caught a glimpse of him driving his mule around town.

He was an active member of the community. Dick was President of both the Swanville Lion’s Club and Senior Center, and was an active member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He was a friend to all and ready to help anyone in need. He will be greatly missed.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Zita; sons, Michael (Darcy) and David (Leah); daughter Tanya; grandsons, Kionte, Caleb, Mason, Wyatt, Aaron; sisters, Yvonne, Diane (Bill); brothers, Jim (Bonita) and Don (Carole) and many loving nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Faye Zarns.

Dale and LouAnn moved their family to Albany in 1974. Soon after, LouAnn began an in-home day care. Every winter LouAnn and Dale would put puzzles together.

LouAnn enjoyed doing needlework, such as embroidery, making crafts, and painting.

She loved to bake and was known for her cinnamon rolls. LouAnn was the reason all of her children got a sweet-tooth. She also watched many black and white western movies, played card games, and collected porcelain dolls.

Survivors include her children, Jeffrey Schultz of Phoenix, AZ, Kelly (Dale) Rafteseth of Albany, Kimberly (Brian) Marquart of Crosby, and Kristi (John) Mueller of Melrose; seven grandchildren, Adam and Matthew Rafteseth, Nicole and Josh Marquart, and Aaron, Reagan, and Daniel Mueller; sister, Pearl Ruud of Alexandria; and brother, Dennis (Lynnae) Starry of Long Prairie.

LouAnn was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Dale Schultz on December 8, 2012.

Serving as urn bearer was Adam Rafteseth.

John Henry Koopmeiners, age 69, of Reno, NV, died on March 17, 2017 in Reno, NV at Reno Renown Hospital surrounded by his wife and children.

He died from complications following a vehicle accident.

Cremation was performed by Simple Cremations in Reno, NV. His ashes will be interred in Minnesota at a future date.

John was born on February 14, 1948 in St Cloud, Minnesota to John Aloys and Verena (Roering) Koopmeiners. He married Toni I. Poepping on August 12, 1972 in Spring Hill, MN. John attended Country School through the 8th grade and graduated from Upsala High School in 1966. He was in the army from 1967 to 1969 during the Vietnam War serving in Korea with the Communications Division. He loved working with his hands

Donald B. Wieling

D o n a l d “Don” Wieling, 72, a resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, April 10, 2017 at the Melrose Hospital due to complications following his fight with cancer.

A celebration of life will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 17, at Immaculate Conception Church in New Munich.

Visitation will be from 4-6 pm, with mass starting at 6 pm, lunch to follow in the church basement. Internment will be at a later date.

Don was born on February 10, 1945 in Melrose to Hugo and Rose (Holdvogt) Wieling. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1963. He was united in marriage on April 24, 1965 to Bernadette (Bernie) Thomes at St. Boniface Church in Cold Spring. He was a dairy farmer for much of his life, raising his family on their farm in

Grove Township. He retired and moved to Melrose in 1994, and was always on the go between cutting the grass on the sod fields to sharpening blades for his small business he ran out of his home to finding where the fish were biting.

Don was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed hunting and outdoor activities with his family. He enjoyed playing cards, and was always ready for a game of 500 rummy. His humorous personality and sharp wit will be always remembered, even if the joke was on you. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and always would have the time to listen and offer advice to anyone who asked.

He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Don is survived by his wife of 51 years Bernie, children Paula (Kevin) Peltz, Donna (Jeff) Tiemann, Sheila (Roman) Doll, Ronald (Dawn) Wieling, Allen (Joelene) Wieling, 18 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Also survived by his sister Joyce (Ted) Westendorf, and brother Delbert (Marian) Wieling, and Ruth (Norman) Wieling, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Rose Wieling, and brothers Norman Wieling and Roger (Judy) Wieling.

Due to warmer weather, the crews were able to break ground the first week of April.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

April 9, 2017: At approximately 3:53 pm, their office received a report of a one vehicle rollover accident near the intersection of Great River Road and 130th Avenue in Swan River Township, south of Little Falls.

51 year-old Michelle Holt of St. Cloud, MN was traveling north on Great River Road when she misjudged the curve and overcorrected, causing her vehicle to roll. She was transported to the hospital by Gold Cross Ambulance with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the MN State Patrol, Bowlus First Response Team, Bowlus Fire Department and Gold Cross Ambulance.

Melrose Mayor Joe Finken visited the Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 during their meeting at St. Mary’s School gym on Monday, April 10th. He talked to the Scouts about what it is like being a mayor, what his duties are, and what are some of the issues that come up during meetings. He discussed the duties and rights of a citizen, which is a requirement for the Scout’s First Class Rank.

He also had time to talk about being a fireman and how important it is to give back to the community. The mayor spoke with the twelve Boy Scouts for about 30 minutes and answered several of their questions. Boy Scout Troop 68 greatly appreciated Mayor Finken for stopping by the troop meeting and spending some time with them. Submitted by Steve Borgerding.

Budget bills, ditch mowing, ag policy and more from the Capitol All of the major finance bills have been passed out of the two chambers of the Minnesota Legislature. After returning from the Easter break, conference committees will be announced, and they will begin the work of negotiating with the governor and his staff to craft bills that he will sign. It’s hoped that agreements can be reached, but in all likelihood, several face a veto threat and may need to be re-worked. The Environment bill is an example in that it contains language that slightly modifies the buffer requirement facing farmers this year. Gov. Dayton has said on at least two occasions that he will compromise no further on buffers, so we will see what develops in that area.

The flap earlier this year caused by MnDOT announcing strict requirements for ditch mowing in its right-of-way has resulted in a bill the governor enacted on Friday. It doesn’t go as far as I’d like, and basically calls for a one-year timeout from the issuance of permits for the right to mow state ditches. The bill says that by March of 2018 the commissioner of transportation must recommend to the Legislature the establishment of a permit or notification system to mow or hay in truck highway right-of-way. The recommendation must contain, among other things, the ease of permit application, the frequency of permits, and priority for the owner or occupant of private land adjacent to state highways.

ing back to our state’s territorial days, the law basically said that two adjoining land owners must equally share the cost of building a fence on the property line.

That made sense in earlier years when most rural residents farmed and had livestock. The law was challenged some years ago when a paper company refused to pay for a fence in northern Minnesota. Because of that court case, St. Louis County was given an exemption from the state’s fence law.

Today, many residents living in the rural areas don’t necessarily farm or have any kind of livestock. That has resulted in disputes over who pays for a fence that only one party needs. The proposed change in the statute says that land owners will share the cost of fencing only if the adjoining lands are both used in whole or in part to produce or maintain livestock for agricultural or commercial purposes.

The long-awaited “alternative practices” guide for buffer implementation was released last week by BOWSR. It doesn’t contain any big surprises, although it will give guidance to local SWCDs on quantifying how an alternative practice stacks up against buffers in terms of reducing erosion and run-off.

Grassed waterways will suffice where there is no clearly defined bed or ditch bank. Negative slopes running down and away from the ditch or waterway will also be accepted if the ditch bank is stabilized with vegetation. If side inlets are utilized in this type of system, those inlets must be buffered.

The alternative practice that gives the most flexibility in terms of narrower buffers pertains to those who practice conservation tillage. Along public waters, the width of the buffer can be reduced to 25 feet for those who utilize no-till or strip-till in their operation. Other reduced tillage practices could also be used, but a technical analysis would have to be run to determine the exact width of the buffer.

Nelson requested the City pay to pay to remove the electrical box that will be in front of the employee parking area.

Nelson also requested the City pave their portion of property between the street and the parking areas on the north and west side of the new Elmdale Mutual building.

GRRL, Great River Regional Library: Contract: Lange moved to approve the contract between GRRL and the City of Upsala, 2nd

by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

7:15 Public Hearing: Tower Road: Mayor Johnson recessed the regular city council meeting and opened the public hearing. A hearing on the City adopting a street reconstruction plan and approving the issuance of general obligation bonds.

Comments were heard from Tower Road resident Garrett Doucette.

Lange moved to close the public hearing, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council meeting back to order.

Lange moved to approve resolution 4-3-17-1 to Concur Award of Contract with Morrison County for Tower Road contingent on not receiving a petition from the citizens to oppose the project, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to adopt resolution 4-3-17-2, a resolution adopting a street reconstruction plan and approving the issuance of general obligations bonds, 2nd by Bartells.

Motion carried unanimously.

7:30 Public Hearing: Capital Improvement Plan; Maintenance Building: Mayor Johnson recessed the regular City Council Meeting, and opened the public hearing; a hearing on the City’s proposed Capital Improvement Plan also known as the Maintenance Building Plan.

Fire Department Report: Lange reported the firefighters will be doing a raffle on Heritage Days.

The Fire Department will be holding a grain bin extrication training on the 15th of April The water truck is almost completed.

Westich moved to allow the Fire Department to proceed in working with PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association) and possibly have PERA manage their retirement fund, 2nd Bartells.

First Responders: First Responder Vice President Garrett Doucette reported that the First Responders are working on helping the Fire Department with the extrication training on the 15th.

They also plan on doing Pork in the Park, and teaming up with the Fire Dept.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the March Calendar.

Stevens requested the City pay for lodging during training at her clerk’s training in May. Lange moved to pay for lodging while Stevens was at a week long training May, 2nd by Olson.

Planning Commission: The Commission approved the permit for Roger Roerick’s building project.

They also reviewed the temporary parking issue in front of the post office.

UCDC: The logo for Heritage Days has been created: “Come Home to Upsala” celebrating 100 years. The logo was designed by Tina Gunderson.

Vendor registration forms have also been created.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Unfinished Business: Vacation/ Personnel Policy: The vacation portion of the personnel policy was reviewed as well as hours of operation.

Lange moved to adopt the changes to the personnel policy as presented, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: UBA Gambling Permit: Lange moved to approve the Gambling Permit with not waiting for UBA (Upsala Ballpark Association) on July 2, 2017, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Park Improvement Project: Lange moved to have the Public Works department remove any dead or decaying trees, 2nd by Bartells.

Basketball Court: The City Council requested Bill Abeler to move forward on fund-raising money for an outdoor basketball court.

RFQ: The Request For Qualifications that S.E.H submitted for the sewer lining project was tabled until the City receives more information.

Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Thom Muellner. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Bill Berscheit, Lori Hellmann and guests Mark Larson, Sherry Larson, Pat Conroy, Jeri Ahrens, Stuart Ahrens and Ken Messer.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote,

with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the January 10, 2017 council meeting with the following change: third sentence, change “present” to “absent”. A second was made

Jeri Ahrens was in attendance to discuss undeveloped Bovee Street. Since the city would not vacate this section she would like the city to maintain it. The council will discuss the matter with the city attorney before a decision will be made.

Mark and Sherry Larson were in attendance seeking approval for the following community events that will be sponsored by the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club: Community Appreciation on May 20, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., GEMFest for July 14-16 with parade to be held on July 14th at 6:00 p.m., Car Show on September 3, 2017 and Tractor Pull on September 4, 2017.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the community events sponsored by the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club with some costs being run through city accounts but reimbursed by the Lions Club. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Pat Conroy was in attendance to update the council on the Small Cities Development Grant application. Due to the fact that no bonding bill was approved by Minnesota State Legislators, the city went from marginally competitive to non- competitive. Until a bonding bill is approved the grant process is stalled.

Ken Messer was in attendance regarding the letter he received on his unlicensed vehicle. Bill Berscheit gave a Fire Department update regarding the following items: 1. The wage committee met and after some discussion came up with a bonus incentive based on the percentage of calls and training.

The matter will be discussed with the city attorney before a policy can be drawn up.

2. A roster of fire department members will be posted on the wall with dates and times of calls or training.

3. Race on Trace currently has 16” of ice and the Sheriff’s Department will determine if the race can take place.

4. The department is working on bids for a new tanker. Current rough estimate is approximately $160,000 for a new chassis, lights and siren. They will try to get a more approximate estimate before coming to the council for approval.

5. Craig Tschida would like to take a leave of absence from the fire department.

6. There is no information from the insurance company as to the repairs to the Rescue Rig. The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Due to some heaving at the Bass Lake Access, Herdering took out one of the cement pads. Any other maintenance needed at the access will take place in the spring.

2. The bubbler system in the tower was not working properly when it was real cold. The company will come back in and install a heated box over the stem and the air compressor at no additional cost to the city.

3. Quotes were obtained to run underground power from the Fire

Swimming Beach Maintenance, Road Ditch Mowing

Grey Eagle Township is looking for someone to maintain the swimming beach on Big Birch Lake. Duties would include putting in the dock and fall removal, general clean-up and mowing as needed. The Clerk discussed utility bills with the council. Over the past couple of years residents have been receiving their utility bills in torn or illegible condition, or not receiving their bills at all. The Clerk would like to request sending bills by email for those residents that have email available to them. This would eliminate the torn or illegible bills and also save money. The Clerk would like to send a letter to all residents that currently receive their utility bills by mail, requesting email and updated contact information. Those that do not have email would still receive their utility bill in the mail. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to send a letter to residents asking them to sign up to receive their utility bills by email. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Resolution No. 2017-06: A Resolution Restricting Parking on the Two Business Blocks of State Street (also known as “Main Street”) WHEREAS, the City of Grey Eagle has a mutual agreement with MnDOT regarding snow removal on a trunk highway; and WHEREAS, THE City Council deems it necessary to restrict the hours of parking along the trunk highway known as State Highway 28 or State Street in the City of Grey Eagle; and WHEREAS, the City Council believes restricting the parking along the trunk highway known as State Highway 28 or State Street in the City of Grey Eagle will allow for the removal of snow for the two business blocks of State Street (also known as Main Street).

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GREY EAGLE, TODD COUNTY, MINNESOTA: That the two business blocks of State Highway 28 or State Street (also known as “Main Street”) in the City of Grey Eagle is hereby restricted as follows: There will be no parking from 2:00 - 6:00 a.m. on the two business blocks of State Highway 28 or State Street (also known as Main Street) from November 1st to May 1st each year. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $748.26 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $101.26 from the General Fund of which $31.26 goes to the Water Fund and $70 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities, and $143.70 from the Sewer Fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

If a relative is qualified and the kind of person who understands they’ll have to bust it every single day and perform at a level equal to or above your other team members, that can be a special and productive thing. A relative who is a problem child, however, can be a nightmare in both your professional and personal lives.

Ask yourself a few questions: Would you hire this person if they weren’t part of the family? Would you hire this person because they would make a good team member? If the answers are no, then you don’t hire them — period.

Be kind about the situation, because there may be some bruised feelings. But the bottom line is you have to do what’s best for your business, your immediate family, and your team.

Highway 71 through Elrosa closes as construction project begins April 24 Motorists who travel Highway 71 through Elrosa will encounter delays and detours after the road closes for construction beginning Monday, April 24.

Motorists and residents should plan for the following: • Highway 71 between Industrial Avenue and Main Street in Elrosa will close April 24, and reopen by Aug. 4.

• A signed truck detour will direct commercial vehicles along Interstate 94, Highway 4 and Highway 55. Get truck detour map.

• A signed passenger vehicle detour will direct cars and light trucks along County Road 191, County Road 13, County Road 175 and County Road 14.

• Driveways and intersecting roads within the Highway 71 work zone will close as needed throughout the project.

The closures and work are part of a project to reconstruct Highway 71 through Elrosa. The project will reconstruct the roadbed, resurface the roadway, improve sidewalks, driveway entrances, and install new curb and gutter and underground utilities. When complete, the project will result in a smoother ride, and improve drainage and accessibility.
