I hate to lose.

And that is how Nick Bollettieri became my friend.

When I was in my early 20s, I gave up my dreams of becoming a professional golfer. Actually, I am a pretty good golfer, but I knew that I wasn’t going to be the next Arnold Palmer. Eventually I decided to seriously pursue the game of tennis.

And I wanted to be really, really good.

I headed to Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, in the early 1970s for some lessons with Nick. From the moment I gripped my racquet, I knew the ball

was in my court. He worked me harder than I ever thought possible. As a coach, Nick is feisty, combative and one of the greatest motivators I’ve ever met. He always delivers more than he promises.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 He founded the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in 1978, the first fulltime tennis boarding school to combine intense on-court training with a customdesigned academic curriculum.

Teaching such a diverse group of students at so many skill levels requires a multi-dimensional approach. His secret? Find the idiosyncrasies of each individual and then work from there.

His methods have been the secret to his success for 55 years of teaching.

Nick’s total package blends technical and strategic on-court training with specialized performance physical training and mental conditioning. His goal is to go beyond training just the physical aspects of the game. He aims to prepare his students for a successful life off the court as well. His college major in philosophy creeps into lessons and long-term thinking.

Nick was a pioneer in the field, which means he took the arrows that go along with the territory. His vision wasn’t shared by his peers (if he actually has any) and the critics didn’t hold back. Then they saw his results.

The noise eventually died down. As Nick says, “You don’t coach skills. You

Nick demands the best from his students because he only gives them his best. He doesn’t settle for average from anyone. Nick produces champions because he is a champion himself, and his students are the big winners.

He has established fabulous inner city youth programs for minority youth.

Nick understands that they don’t pay off on effort; they pay off on results.

In my own home town of Minneapolis alone, Inner City Tennis touches the lives of about 5,000 kids every year as well as the 100-plus volunteer senior citizens who as coach/mentor/tutors build an intergenerational rapport with these children. The program focuses on the development of these young people in specific characteristics such as responsibility, respect, teamwork, enthusiasm, integrity, perseverance and service.

By the way, it is the only board that Nick has ever agreed to serve on, even though he has been asked to join hundreds.

Nick’s story is well worth the read.

Just as with his coaching, he doesn’t hold back.

Obituaries Magdalene M. Garding Magdalene M. Garding, age 100 of St. Martin, died peacefully surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, April 2, 2014 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 7 at St. Martin of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Martin with Rev. Edward Bebelun, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Magdalene Mary Bueckers was born January 26, 1914 near Freeport in Oak Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Bernadine (Boeckermann) Bueckers. She was united in marriage to Nicholas Garding on June 26, 1934 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Magdalene farmed near Albany for 37 years then moved to St. Martin in 1971.

Since 2007 she resided at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany.

She was a member of St. Martin

Catholic Church in St. Martin, St. Ann’s Christian Mothers, Rosary Sodality, and St. Agnes Mission Group. Magdalene enjoyed both flower and vegetable gardening. Her favorite flowers were her geraniums and she also canned the vegetables she grew. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting, cooking, playing cards, and she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Tillie (Rollie) Gilk of Albany, Marie Garding of St. Cloud, Doreen (Edmund) Ebensteiner of Richmond, Joe (Janice) Garding of Albany, Adeline (Ralph) Boecker of St. Cloud, Helen (Donnie) Van Drehle of Melrose, and Steve (Mary) Garding of Freeport; 24 grandchildren and 50 greatgrandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Armella Bueckers of Albany and Tillie Bueckers of Freeport.

Magdalene was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Garding on April 12, 1985; grandson, Tom Ebensteiner; two infant grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; brothers and sisters, Katherine Toenies, Theresa Frie, Agnes Eickhoff, Joe Bueckers, Herman Bueckers, Edwin Bueckers, and Rose Wensman.

Serving as casket bearers were Kevin Ebensteiner, Gail Wieling, Shawn Garding, Nancy Mellesmoen, John Gilk, and Tim Boecker. Cross bearer was Justin Spanier and scripture bearer was Robin Duckson. Honorary bearers were St. Ann’s Christian Mothers and the St. Agnes Mission Group.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Rose L. Schmidt, age 92 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully in her sleep on We d n e s d a y, April 2, 2014 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, April 7 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiated with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Rose Lena Martin was born on January 10, 1922 at home on the family farm near Lefor, North Dakota to Bernhardt and Katherine (Zillich) Martin. She was fourth in line from a family of ten. When just a youngster; she moved with her parents to a farm near Gladstone, North Dakota. She attended school in Gladstone for 12 years.

After she completed high school, she worked for several years and then attended Dickinson Teacher’s College to become certified to teach in a rural school. She taught until she got married. On November 17, 1947 she was united in marriage to Carl Schmidt at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Gladstone, North Dakota. After marriage, she became a homemaker. Their first home was near Dickinson, North Dakota where both children, Rodney and Patricia, were born while they lived there. In 1952, they moved to a farm near

Doetkott, age 73, of Burtrum who passed away on Thursday, April 3, at the CentraCare Health Systems-Sauk Centre. Burial will take place at a later date in the Moses Dane Cemetery, Burtrum.

JoAnn Mary Meagher was born April 18, 1940 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota, the daughter of James and Theresa (Denk) Meagher. She grew up and attended country school near Grey Eagle. She married Dale Payne and they moved to the Twin Cities. After the death of her husband she returned to Burtrum. JoAnn married Donald Tepley and they lived in Upsala. She worked at Jennie-0 Foods for many years. She later married Wayne Doetkott and they lived on a dairy farm for several years. Joann retired in 2005.

Rose’s hobbies were sewing, quilting, baking, and gardening. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle, Christian Mothers, and the Mission Group.

Survivors include her son, Rodney (Kathy) Schmidt of Albert Lea; daughter, Patricia (Dennis) Lye of Taylor Mill, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Peter (Susan) Schmidt, Angela (Chad) Duerkop, Philip (Jennifer) Schmidt, Rebecca Trafton, Adam (Leah) Lye, Bethany (Tony) Miga, and Benjamin Lye; great grandchildren, Sam, Sylvia, Sawyer, Jett, Tucker, Megan, Brooke, and Lawson; sister, Mary Miller of Minot, North Dakota; brothers-in-law, Conrad Schmidt of Wadena and Albert Smebakken of Gillette, Wyoming; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Schmidt on February 17, 2004; parents, Bernhardt and Katherine Martin; brothers, Frank, Bernhart, Peter, William, and Henry Schmidt; and sisters, Ann Birdsall Schiwal, Elizabeth “Betty” Schmidt, and Kathryn “Kate” Smebakken.

Serving as casket bearers were Peter Schmidt, Philip Schmidt, Chad Duerkop, and Benjamin Lye. Gift bearers were Megan and Brooke Schmidt. Reader was Rita Greff. Honorary bearers were Rebecca Trafton, Angela Duerkop, Bethany Miga, Adam Lye, and Tony Miga.

JoAnn enjoyed canning, quilting, sewing, reading, gardening, and cooking big meals. She liked to go fishing in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter.

She loved farming with Wayne.

JoAnn is survived by her children, Donald Tepley, Burtrum; Laura (Douglas) Jaskche, Osseo; and Catherine (Jeffrey) Ahrens, Burtrum; siblings, Virginia (Clarence) Maciej, Elmdale; Carol (David) Butkowski, Freeport; Sandra (Allen) Johnson, Pillsbury; and Janice (Robert) Larson, Burtrum; also 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

DelRoy John Schoenborn Mass of Christian burial for DelRoy John Schoenborn, 83, of Albany, will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis.

Father John Odero will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery. DelRoy died peacefully Saturday evening with his siblings at his side. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, April 11, 2014 at Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Albany and again after 9:30 AM until the time of services on Saturday, April 12 at the church. Parish prayers will be at 6 PM Friday evening at the funeral home.

DelRoy was born on July 1, 1930 to Henry “Harry” and Ida (Schramel) Schoenborn in Spring Hill, MN. Del was raised with six siblings and attended the local school. On June 10, 1952 he married Theresa Rose Caspers in Meire Grove

F u n e r a l s e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Dolores B. Kleve, age 91 of Albany, will be 3:00 PM, Thursday, April 10 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Dolores died Sunday at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. There will be a gathering after 2:00 PM Thursday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany.

Dolores was born September 7, 1922 in St. Rose, MN to Henry and Agnes (Stoermann) Hoppe. She married Walter Kleve on July 23, 1946 in St. Rose.

Dolores was a homemaker, raising her six children and she worked for Fingerhut and then Jennie-O Foods. She was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Seven Dolors Christian Mothers.

Del later moved to a farm in Holdingford where he lived until three years ago before moving to a patio home in Albany. Del loved to farm and enjoyed listening to local radio farm market shows and watching cattle auctions on TV. DelRoy was known for never missing an episode of Judge Judy.

He liked to socialize at Rookie’s and dine at Hillcrest Restaurant. A favorite place of his to visit was the lake in Deerwood.

He will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor. Del was a contributing member of St. Francis Church in St. Francis.

DelRoy is survived by his siblings Marion Busk (husband deceased; special friend Bill Schuler), CA; Joan (James) Wein, Glendale, AZ; Robert (JoAnn) Schoenborn, Deerwood; Herbert Schoenborn, St. Cloud; nieces and nephews; as well as many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Theresa who passed away March 24, 1992; his parents Harry and Ida Schoenborn; his sister Lorraine Haus; and his brother Allen Schoenborn.

Dolores is survived by her children, Duane (LouAnn) Kleve, Albany; Joyce (Lornie) Middendorf, St. Rose; Janice (Donald) Braegelmann, Albany; Denise (Jon Hedtke) Stafford, Regal; and Delilah (Ronald) Stellmach, Foley. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Julie Kleve.

Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter on June 4, 1986, her son, Delroy Kleve; her brothers, Bernard Hoppe, Lawrence “Swede” Hoppe, Wilfred Hoppe, Clarence Hoppe, Ambrose Hoppe and Alphonse Hoppe and her sisters, Oswalda Muellner and Angela Muellner.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I want to roll over a 401(k), and my bank is encouraging me to roll it over to fixed annuities.

Is this a good investment?

-John Dear John, More times than not, when you go to a bank for investment advice, what you’ll get in the bargain is bad advice. And that’s the case here.

I’d move toward a traditional IRA, in a series of good growth stock mutual funds. Put it across four types of accounts: growth, growth and income, aggressive growth and international.

What you’re looking for, John, is a great track record for your investments.

You want a track record so ridiculously good that it gives you a great sense of comfort, even though there’s no guarantee of what’s to come. And there are mutual funds out there that can do just that for you. I own one that’s over 70 years old, and it has averaged nearly 12 percent over that time.

Lots of people talk in “what ifs” when it comes to investing. Well, you can play that little game all day.

But if the economy goes completely down the tubes, and the government destroys things like mutual funds and real estate completely, your little bankrecommended annuity isn’t going to make it, either. The banking system as a whole will fail if all the mutual

funds close because they’re all based in publicly traded companies. And that means virtually every business you drive by on your way to work would be out of business. A bank’s not going to survive that kind of thing.

If you’re looking for things to help you survive the apocalypse, you’re talking about food and water. But if you want rational, well-reasoned investments, you need to look at growth stock mutual funds and paidfor real estate. That’s what I do!

-Tessa Dear Tessa, Debt consolidation is a bad thing because it makes you feel like you really did something to get out of debt and change your financial world when you didn’t. People come to me all the time saying stuff like, “Dave, I got a second mortgage. I paid off all my debt!” Well, no you didn’t pay off all your debt. You just moved it around.

That’s part of the catch when it comes to debt consolidation. If you get a lower payment and move things around a little bit, you feel like you actually accomplished something.

The problem with that is you don’t do anything to address the real problem, which is you.

Upsala High School Presents “Spamalot”

The Upsala High School Drama Club will be presenting the award winning musical “Spamalot” April 11-13.

The show is “lovingly ripped off” from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The musical is an irreverent parody of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. It won three Tony Awards in 2005 including Best Musical. Arthur and his knights encounter a variety of obstacles while searching for the holy grail, including rude Frenchmen, killer rabbits, a black knight and the knights who say “ni.” The offbeat, silly British humor is sure to keep you laughing.

King Arthur is played by Josiah Lojovich, and his knights are Aidan Guthrie, Paul Ripplinger, Aaron Ripplinger and Ruthie Flaa. His lackey Patsy is played by Danica Cheney and the Lady of the Lake is played by Margaux Douvier.

Upsala’s Cardinal Media Center Annual Bookmark Contest

Long-term impacts of new budget bill concerning

Another chunk of Minnesota’s projected surplus was spent last week when the House passed a $323 million supplemental budget bill. There were several good aspects to the bill, including the five-percent pay increase for those who work with the disabled, but overall, it sets in place massive spending increases down the road. This comes on top of last year’s budget, which contained one of the largest spending increases in state history.

The bill also illustrates the problem with large, omnibus bills where, in this case, all areas of state government spending were rolled together and legislators had to give an up-or-down vote on the entire package.

I mentioned the initial cost of this bill for spending in this year, $323 million, which is large but still manageable.

The real concern comes in the next twoyear biennium when the cost of these measures balloons up to $892 million.

The biggest increase comes in the area of Health and Human Services, which accounts for nearly three-fourths of the spending in the “tails” of the budget. In

fiscal year 2016-17 this bill shifts $442 million from the General Fund to the Health Care Access Fund (HCAF).The shift fills a hole created because of the increased cost of ObamaCare mandates like the eligibility reassignment and expansion of MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance, along with lower-than-anticipated reimbursements from the federal government to fund those programs. In less than a year, the projected balance in the HCAF at the end of the 2017 fiscal year went from a positive $79 million to a deficit of $647 million.

As if all this spending wasn’t enough, the House Rules Committee voted April 4 to approve the new Senate Office Building. Originally slated to cost $90 million, the project was scaled back somewhat by removing one of the parking facilities that had been included. This latest version contains offices for all 67 senators but does not feature a “reflecting pool” or workout gymnasium as previous blueprints included. This was the last hurdle to be passed in the approval process for the building although, because of the changes made, it will need to go back to the Senate again. It may be just coincidence, but the House finally

Everyone seems to have a need to be safe and secure. We see warnings everywhere we look and watch for them everywhere we go. They alert us to potential dangers and advise of impending problems. They are an important part of life.

There were several times in the life of David when he was forced to flee for his life. Even though he was God’s anointed king, he was not immune to the injustice and hatred of others. Even Saul had a desire to destroy him.

Once when he was in danger he stood his ground and said, “I trust in the Lord for protection, so why do you say to me, Fly like a bird to the mountain?” During this time of outward trouble he looked inside himself and found what he needed: His Lord!

Our society has become heavily involved in seeking temporary solutions to eternal problems. More than we want to admit are addicted to drugs - whether legal or illegal, prescribed or purchased without proper authority.

But those solutions are temporary and only last for a short time and ultimately end in disaster.

But that is not true if we trust in the Lord. He is more than a stimulus; He will become our Savior and remain so throughout eternity. He does not destroy - He delivers. He does not control us, He transforms us to that which is good, pure, wholesome and life giving. No prayer is too hard for Him to answer and there is no problem too complex from Him to solve.

The Five16 Film Festival takes place on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 7 p.m. in Maranatha Hall on Northwestern’s campus, 3003 Snelling Ave. N., St. Paul, Minn. Festival-goers will enjoy a selection of original, student-written and produced comedy, drama, music video, documentary and animation films. At the end of the event, a winner for each category will be announced, as chosen by a panel of Northwestern faculty, alumni and film professionals from around the country.

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City March 4, 2014 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, Tim Grittner, Jim Molitor, and AJ Johnson. Also present: Brenda Schmidt, Mike Rude, Lonny Hutchins and Liz Verley, reporter.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, February 11, 2014 were read.

A motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes as read.

Tim Grittner seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Tim Grittner to approve the treasurer’s report.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson announced there will be a closed meeting following the regular monthly meeting to discuss personnel issues.

Mike Rude, City Engineer, was present to discuss with the council frozen water lines and what is happening in other cities. Mike advised residents should leave water run in a pencil line stream of water. Council agreed, water will be charged according to last years usage for months leaving water run.

Should water lines freeze up, residents should contact the city clerk and present the bill for thawing water lines and the city will pay half of the plumbing bill.

City maintenance man, Lonny, stated the new bucket for the city tractor should be ready this week. A bucket edge and pins needed to be added. He also stated his cell phone ran over minutes and was wondering if you could get compensated for extra minutes. Council agreed, and asked Lonny if he could check into a more minute plan and report back the extra cost to council.

Jim Molitor stated the Kubota should be ready about the middle of this month. It will come equipped with a sweeper and blade.

Mayor Peterson presented council with a contract from Dan Thilquist. Dan has a class B and C and a type 4-O waste disposal license. The contract states that Dan will assist and advise in the water and wastewater system. He is an independent contractor and will receive $600.00 a month with no benefits. Tim Grittner made a motion to sign the contract with Dan Thilquist. AJ Johnson seconded the

motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

A phone alarm system is being looked in for the sewer plant. If the plant should malfunction the system will alert the numbers that are programmed into the alarm.

The Mayor presented council with the Morrison County Grant Funding Agreement for cleanup day in the amount of $375.00 and recycling grant for $1176.00. Tim Grittner made a motion to have the Mayor sign the agreement.

AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Clean up day is tentatively set for May 3, 2014.

Brenda Schmidt was present to see if city wide garage sales could be in conjunction with the cleanup day. Council agreed. Mayor Peterson would like to have a city bike ride that day also. Notices will be sent to business owners to see if they would like to participate with “crazy day” in store specials.

The Astech sweeping agreement was looked at and discussed.

Tim Grittner made a motion to sign and have Astech sweep the city streets this spring. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The Morrison County Humane Society agreement was presented to the council. After discussion Tim Grittner made a motion to sign the agreement. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson stated she has been getting many calls about dogs running lose in the city. Residents need to have their dogs on leashes.

If complaints continue, the sheriff’s department will be called and the resident will be charged for the pickup of the animal.

The Board of Equalization meeting is set for April 15, 2014 at 2:00pm. It will be held in the Swanville Center. Tim Grittner, Jim Molitor and Mayor Peterson stated they would be present.

Mayor Peterson presented to council a subordination agreement with a deed home on 308 Rhoda Avenue. After discussion Tim Grittner made a motion to sign the agreement. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held April 8, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tim Grittner and seconded by Jay Bartkowicz to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Meeting adjourned 8:10 p.m.

The meeting was then closed to discuss a personnel issue.

Mayer has been named the Upsala Junior High Student of the Month. Rhiana is an eighth grader at UAS and is the daughter of Christina Nienaber. Rhiana participates in volleyball and has excelled in academics. She has been student of the month in the past and consistently sits on the B honor roll.

Rhiana’s Visual Art teacher, Mrs. Kara Poissant states, “Rhiana has shown such an intense desire to learn and create

new projects and puts her whole heart into her work. She is consistent and is not afraid to try new things in her artwork. Rhiana has proven her creativity and passion for the arts, time and time again.”

Rhiana’s favorite class is Art because “it is super fun and I love art. We do a lot of creative things and it is fun.”

Outside of school, Rhiana has a knack for babysitting. She also enjoys drawing, coloring, photography, playing volleyball, and hanging out with her friends.

In the future Rhiana would like to go to college and pursue a degree in photography. Then she would love to travel the world taking photographs.

State Representative Paul Anderson (R-Starbuck) endorsed for another term

Three-term state representative Paul Anderson (R-Starbuck) was endorsed for another term in the Minnesota Legislature by Republicans at their District 12B endorsing convention in Sauk Centre on April 4. Anderson, first elected to the House of Representatives

in 2008, served as vice-chair of the Agriculture Finance and Policy committee during his second term in office, and he is currently the lead Republican on the Housing Finance and Policy committee.

“It’s been a privilege these past six years to serve the great folks who live in this part of Minnesota,” Anderson said.

“Redistricting changed the area I represent last year, but it’s still heavily dependent on agriculture and manufacturing for its economic base. I would like to continue representing District 12B.” “The state-wide economy seems to be improving,” Anderson added, “although we shouldn’t go on a spending spree in St. Paul just because we have a surplus right now. I’m concerned that the DFL-controlled Legislature is passing financial bills that may cause budget problems in the future.”

Anderson and his wife, Faith, reside on their family farm between Starbuck and Glenwood in Pope County. They have three grown children and three grandchildren.

Helping Hands Outreach Awarded Contracts

By Jeff Fromm, Executive Director Helping Hands Outreach has been awarded contracts up to $37,335 by the Central Minnesota Council on Aging (CMCOA) as part of the Older Americans Act Program for the calendar year 2014.

The funds are to provide older adults age 60 and above and their caregivers with inhome services with the goal being to help them continue to remain safely in their homes and avoid premature placement in nursing homes. The funds are specifically for providing transportation, homemaking and chore services, health promotion classes, and caregiver support. The staff and Board of Directors of Helping Hands Outreach want to thank the Board of CMCOA for placing its confidence in the work of Helping Hands Outreach and helping the work to continue.

Helping Hands Outreach is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2001 to serve older adults. Its work has expanded from providing rides

Aaron has been on the A Honor roll throughout High School. He is taking several college classes this year, making the President’s List at Central Lakes College Fall semester.

He is involved in many Extra-Curricular activities including Football, Drama, Choir, National Honor Society and serving on the Student Council as Class President. An honor he has held since 9th grade.

In the fall of 2013, Aaron received the All Conference Academic Football Award and was part of the Honorable Mention All Conference Football Team.

Besides working out and spending time with his friends, community involvement is a big part of Aaron’s free time. At school he is a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Aaron is involved with his church and youth group. Volunteering with youth athlet-

Finding time for volunteer work, extracurricular activities and studying, being involved in so much is very difficult, but Aaron cites his involvement in Athletics as a reason he is able to excel. “High School Sports help teach you time management and leadership skills.

They help motivate you to keep your grades up.”

Aaron’s advice for his classmates is, “Don’t procrastinate on any work. Participate in as many extra curricular activities as you can handle. Stress up to a certain point is a good thing.”

USA Football Coach Jay Loven had wonderful things to say about Aaron.

“Aaron is very deserving of Upsala Student of the Month. He exemplifies everything it means to earn this honor. Aaron is a tremendous student, shows great leadership skills, verbally, as well as on the football field. All of these are great attributes, but I feel Aaron’s best attribute is that he is a terrific person. Aaron is concerned about others, especially the youth that he helps teach. He enjoys teaching the skills that he has learned through the years to the next generation.

Aaron is a young man that everyone can be proud of...I certainly am.”

Aaron’s future plans include attending a college with a good therapy program to become a Physical Therapist.

During Read Down Your Fines week, teens and juveniles who have accumulated fines on their library accounts may read at the library to reduce the amount they owe.

Fifteen minutes of reading wipes out $1 in fines. The first Read Down Your Fines week took place in June 2013, when 173 minor cardholders took part. Another 145 took part during a second Read Down Your Fines week in October.

Library staff like to see a busy children’s area and teen space. They believe it is in the best interest of all young people that they be able to take full advantage of library services. Read Down Your Fines provides a measure of compromise and forgiveness for those who have not always been able to return materials promptly for the use of others.

“Young people aren’t always to blame when items are returned late,” said Beth Ringsmuth Stolpman, Patron Services Specialist. “Sometimes another family member checks out materials on their card, and sometimes they don’t have transportation available to get to the library. Even if they have been forgetful or irresponsible, they’re kids and we need to remember that.” Read Down Your Fines is only available to those 16 and younger, and it only applies to fines accumulated for late

Individuals who want to take advantage of Read Down Your Fines can speak to staff at their library. In the case of very young children with fines on their cards, parents may read down the child’s fines by reading to them in the library. The program is supported by public donations and will be available at all 32 GRRL locations. Young people who want to take part should speak with library staff as local procedures may vary. Individuals who wish to donate to Read Down Your Fines may do so through the library’s website, www.griver.org/support-library.
