Always hire an expert -By Harvey Mackay When the office photocopies began to look faint, the office manager called in a local repair service. The friendly technician inspected the equipment and informed the manager that the machine was in need of a good cleaning. The tech suggested that someone could read the operator’s manual and perform the job themself, since it would cost $100 if he did the work.

Pleasantly surprised by his candor, the office manager asked, “Does your boss know you are discouraging business?”

“Actually, my boss demands we explain this to all our customers. After people try first to fix things themselves, we end up making much more money on repairs.”

Good advice is always a good investment. If you don’t know how to do something or don’t have time to learn how to do it properly, hire an expert. Knowledge is power. You will save time and money in the long term.

Over the years, I’ve hired experts to help with specific projects so that my staff and I can learn from professionals and gain valuable experience.

My philosophy is that if you can’t be an expert or know an expert, you should always hire an expert. But how do you find the best experts? It’s not as simple as doing a Google search – finding the best lawyer, accountant, doctor, mechanic or whatever professional

you’re looking for requires a few more steps.

Here are some strategies I use in picking an expert: • Go to someone you already know and trust. When a problem hits is a lousy time to look for someone you can trust. I would rather rely on someone I knew I could count on, even if their experience is limited. And if I don’t know the right person, I’ll check with some trusted colleagues for their recommendations.

• Use an expert to find another expert in the same profession. Don’t ask an accountant to help you pick a doctor. But I have asked many doctors to recommend other doctors in other specialties. Nurses are also great resources. I want the best, someone who stays current in their area of expertise.

• Be prepared to pay for any advice you get, even when all you are asking your first expert to do is recommend a second expert.

That makes expert number one think twice about making a solid recommendation.

Good advice is never cheap. And cheap advice is rarely good.

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions ... and a lot of them. When I interview experts, I want a time and action calendar and a deadline before I hire them. For example, one of my favorite investment probes is “Are you putting your own money in the investment that you are recommending to me?”

• Don’t confuse being a good friend with being a good businessperson. Hiring a buddy or family member as a favor or to save a buck may end up costing you dearly.

Unless that person is actually an expert, keep looking.

• It bears repeating, look for experts before you need them. Anticipate challenges you might face at some point in the future and dig your well before you’re thirsty. Get

to know them – or about them – in advance.

• Be prepared to hire a second expert.

If you are not confident in the advice you get from the first expert, a second opinion is in order.

One of my favorite books while cutting my teeth in business was “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. He wrote a story about the Colorado gold rush miner who found a lot of gold and thought he had hit a rich seam. He covered up his work and went home and told relatives and friends about his find and raised lots of money to buy equipment. They set it up and started mining. They filled a cart with gold the first few weeks, but it wasn’t enough to pay for all the equipment and suddenly the gold dried up. They kept digging and spent more money on equipment, but still no gold.

They ended up selling their equipment to a junk dealer and went home.

The junk dealer thought he’d give it another try and got expert help from a mining engineer who did an assessment of the lease. He said they failed earlier because they didn’t understand fold lines and gold seams. One of the richest seams of gold in Colorado was less than three feet from where they were digging.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Happiness

Sometimes when we take a “look-back” to our earlier years, we recognize that a certain person, place or happening is a frequent appearance in our memory.

These things have made a big impression in our memory, even though we, at the time, made no special effort to make it so. These recollections cause feelings today, similar to the feelings we had when the experience occurred. We may experience a warm feeling when remembering someone, a place that was part of a travel experience or an occasion that made a special memory for us.

In most cases these memories are of happy or uplifting nature, because we somehow tend to forget bad memories. So much for psychology! I need to share a memory of someone from my past.

This guy was forever old. He weighed about 125 pounds, walked around stooped and spoke slowly with a loud, almost scratchy tone. His appearance was that of an elderly person, although I never knew his actual age. I’m not aware of his education, but he had some thoughts and words which would indicate more learning than was common for the 8th grade education common at that time.

He had also accumulated a variety of cuss words that he was able to use effectively and were acceptable to the audience that was within hearing range at that particular time.

He farmed some land, milked a couple of cows and had a John Deere H for all of the hard work. He was a little late with the spring planting and fall harvesting, but didn’t worry about it. Actually, he was like a few other farmers in the area at that time. They lived from day to day, having no desire to become more financially successful and were happy with their lives as they were. They earned little, spent little and were perpetually satisfied by having the basics, food, clothing and shelter. In most cases they were having a happy life.

Some of the more vivid remembrances

included his milking method. It was frequently a little later than it should have been. It included picking up a stool and a pail and stationing himself at the location required beginning with singing “Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer do.” The rhythm of the song and the milk hitting the pail were similar, so it worked good for him. I guess the cows expected it.

His son and I spent a lot of time together.

He sometimes found work for us to do, because he just didn’t have enough “poost” to do the lifting himself. In spring we would go down to the “crick” and see if the fish were running, having previously been warned to only get a couple because that’s all we can use. One spring he noticed horseradish in large amounts growing at the end of his field.

He dragged the disk over it several times to kill it off. Afterwards he pulled a drag across the field, which increased the problem. Don’t remember how he solved that problem.

One morning he found a half dozen guinea hens in the yard. He thought that maybe they would help hold down the rodents and bugs around the place. They seemed to do that, but as a couple of years passed the flock increased to more than 100.

We were over there visiting one night and he said that they were better than a watch-dog, since if anything unusual was happening in the yard, they would all begin to “holler” and the threat would go away. About midnight they began their noisy “hollering” from their roosts in the big elm trees in the yard. It was so loud that conversation was difficult.

Finally the guy who had been previously praising them opened the front door and yelled at them to “shut the hell up.” It made no difference, so he reached behind the door, stuck the business end of the old double barrel outside and let both barrels loose on the elm trees. The ruckus that followed included birds falling, feathers flying and a mass exit toward safety. It worked, as he said, “that otta shut the damn guineas up.” I can’t help chuckle when thinking about that occurrence.

Fatal Crash: March 24, 2021: At 11:32 p.m., received the call of a one vehicle rollover crash on County Road 11 near Woodview Road in Millwood Township.

This location is approximately 3 miles north of Freeport. The caller reported that his daughter had been driving home when she noticed lights in a field and notified him. The caller went to check and found the vehicle and reported that there was an unresponsive occupant inside.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a silver 2015 Chevrolet Silverado on its roof. The truck appeared to have negotiated a sharp curve when it left the roadway and hit a field approach. It became airborne and landed on its roof.

Freeport Fire and Rescue responded, extricated the driver, and began life-saving efforts. The driver and lone occupant of the truck was identified as Donald Eugene Pflipsen, 91, Sauk Rapids. Pflipsen was transported to the Melrose Hospital for his injuries. He was later pronounced deceased at the Melrose Hospital.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance Service.

Robert J. “Bob” Schmidt Robert J. “Bob” Schmidt, age 93 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 30 at St. Paul’s Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

E l e a n o r A. Niehoff, age 98 of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday, March 26, 2021 at the Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, March 31 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Eleanor Angeline Sand was born November 20, 1922 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Cathryn (Nefzger) Sand. She was united in marriage to Joseph Niehoff on October 21, 1953 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, Christian Women, Catholic United Financial, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary in Melrose. Eleanor enjoyed cooking and baking, crocheting and embroidering, quilting, sewing, gardening, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Eleanor was God’s humble servant, quiet and reserved, and slow to anger.

Survivors include his loving wife of 70 years, Evelyn Schmidt of Sauk Centre; children, Charlene (Steve) Messerich of Grey Eagle, Kenneth (Laurie) Schmidt of Sturgeon Lake, and Jaime (Laura) Schmidt of Big Lake; eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Schmidt, Jr.; grandson, Andrew Schmidt; brothers and sisters, Ann Gettel, Frank Schmidt, Clem Schmidt, Norman Schmidt, Marion Johnson, Hilda Gorman, Katherine Schmidt, Agnes Schraft, and Stephen Schmidt.

Bertha Etelka Barnes, 83, of Albany, MN, went to heaven on March 22, 2021.

She was born July 28, 1937 in Travers City, Michigan and was married to Ellsworth Barnes Jr. on July 20, 1957 in Inkster, MI. The couple lived in Long Beach, CA for over 50 years and moved to Albany, MN in 1997.

Bertha was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church prior to moving to Bakersfield, CA to reside with her daughter Connie in December 2020.

Bertha is survived by her children, Cathey Rodriguez, Albany, Connie Roche, Bakersfield, CA, and Lonnie Barnes, Albany.

She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her seven brothers and sisters her husband Ellsworth Barnes, and her son Ronnie Barnes.

David N. “Dave” Bertram David N. “Dave” Bertram, age 73 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a short battle with brain cancer on Friday, March 26, 2021 at his home in Greenwald, Minnesota.

Lynn J. Ersland, age 78 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at his home on Big Birch Lake near Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating, Rev. Vince Lieser concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. A family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m.

Lynn Jay Ersland was born January 29, 1943 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Jay and Golda (Hobbett) Ersland. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in Eagle Grove, Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa with a degree in Animal Science. Lynn was united in marriage to Mary Kay Lane on July 9, 1966 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Humboldt, Iowa.

He was employed by Hormel Foods of Austin, MN for his entire management career for the food industry. His profession provided Lynn and Mary Kay the opportunity to relocate many times and amass their large network of good friends.

He was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose; Lynn was the chairman of the St. Mary’s School Endowment Fund and was a member of the Big Birch Lake Association. Lynn had a passion for being outdoors, travel, food & wine and his church and community.

Lynn was quick to share his wonderful wit with all that encountered him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Kay Ersland of Grey Eagle; Ann (Scott) Schleisman of Westminster, Colorado;

loves were his family, grandchildren and fishing every chance he could.

Arlene Marie Beniek

Arlene Marie (Mrozek) Beniek, 79-year-old resident of Bowlus, passed away Wednesday, March 24 surrounded by her loving family at her home in Bowlus. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 30 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. Burial was held at the parish cemetery. A Arlene Marie Mrozek was born on February 20, 1942 in Flensburg, MN to the late Blase and Gertrude (Piehowski) Mrozek.

She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1960. Arlene worked at the West Side Cafe as a waitress during her high school years. She also worked at Munsingwear in Little Falls until it closed. She was also a Teacher Assistant for 20 years in the Royalton School District in Royalton, MN. Arlene created a sewing business mending clothes; altering dresses; and creating Memory Teddy Bears. She enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, canning, gardening, sewing, quilting,

Gladys Psick, 91 year old resident of the Bowlus/ Royalton area died Wednesday, March 24 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, March 29 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus with Father Laurn Virning and Father Greggory Mastey officiating.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Gladys Marion Schwientek was born on December 17, 1929 in Morrison County to the late Peter and Elizabeth (Lyshik) Schwientek.

She attended rural Country school. Gladys was united in marriage to Leonard Psick on June 25, 1953 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. The couple made their home on Great River Road in Royalton, MN. Gladys was a home maker raising the couple’s children, Jim, Mary Jane, Janice, Doris and Rose Ann. She enjoyed gardening, plants, flowers, playing cards, and bingo. She always enjoyed receiving recipes from family and friends. Gladys’ faith was very important to her praying the Rosary

baking (coffee cakes), and canning (pickles and sauerkraut). Arlene was an active member of the MCCL, St. Stanislaus Rosary Society, Eucharistic Minister, and the church choir for over 50 years. Arlene and her husband James were active members of the Heartland Polka Swingers for many years.

Helen Jeanette Mosleth

Helen Jeanette Mosleth, nee Wilson, of Long Prairie, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 26, 2021, at 103 years of age. Helen was born as a pandemic was erupting in the nation and passed away as another pandemic gripped our land.

Helen was born November 20, 1917, the youngest of seven children born to William Phillip and Anna Elizabeth (Brown) Wilson in St. Hilaire, Minnesota.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, Minnesota and attended Mankato Commercial College.

August 4, 1940, she married R. Bertram “Bert” Mosleth of Thief River Falls on her family’s farm in St. Hilaire. Together they raised three children: Katherine Jeannette Holmes (James), Margaret Ann Grewing (Douglas) and Dr. Michael Bertram Mosleth in Thief River Falls and Long Prairie. They were married fifty years before Bert died in 1990.

Helen was a wonderful mother and beloved grandmother to her five grandchildren: Lexy Schwartz (Ryan), Katherine Silcox (Tyler), Josh Holmes (Blair), Amanda Choudhary (Kavish) and Tim Mosleth (Erin); and to her ten great grandchildren.

Besides raising her family, Helen was a valued employee at First National, now American Heritage, Bank of Long Prairie where she was

the first married woman hired by the bank from which she retired as an officer of Personal Banking, a job she truly enjoyed.

Helen was a very active and faithful member of the Methodist Church, serving in the choir, in women’s Circles and various church committees and projects. She also served as a community volunteer Worthy Matron of Eastern Star and a member of the Long Prairie Country Club where she enjoyed playing golf and Bridge, the latter until she was 100 years old.

Besides her beloved spouse, she was preceded in death by her parents and her seven siblings.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Peace United Church in Long Prairie with Rev. David Sorrel officiating. Burial followed at the Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Curtis Lee Graves, age 55 of Long Prairie, passed away March 23, 2021.

Curtis was born on June 6, 1965, in Sauk Centre to LaVerne Jr. & Barbara Jean (Starry) Graves.

After graduation in 1983, he went to work for Starry Construction.

On September 2, 1988, Curtis married Barbara Rosenow. Over the years he worked for several companies; Bauerly’s Construction, Knife River Construction, Mayo Construction of North Dakota, and lastly Riley Brothers Construction as a Superintendent.

Curtis was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting wood and spending time with his cows. He took joy in raising his own beef cattle, processing his own pigs, and especially drinking his diet Coke and diet Pepsi.

One of his favorite pastimes was sitting on the couch in the evening watching Fox News while eating mint chip ice cream, popcorn, or chips; always remembering to share with his dogs

Curtis was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, co-chair of Midwest Outdoors Unlimited for the last 11 years and co-chair of Ducks Unlimited in Todd County for five years.

Curtis is preceded in death by his infant brother Peter, grandparents, Laverne Sr. & Frances Graves, grandpa Whistle Starry, grandpa Forest Nelson and in-laws, DeWayne & Lillian Rosenow.

Curtis is survived by his wife Barbara, children: Cory (fiancé Abbey Minke) Graves, born in 1993, Brianna (Derek Dempsey) Graves, born in 2001; parents, LaVerne Jr. & Barbara Graves; grandma, Myrtle Nelson; siblings: Greg (Dawn) Graves, Corinne (Rob) Mettenburg, Connie (Glenn) Pesta; brother-in-law Jim (Trina) Rosenow and many nieces, nephews and his favorite great niece Ava Graves.

-Enid Dear Enid, I’m not sure I’d recommend doing this. I might think about it if your emergency fund is way too big, plus you have a very small amount left to pay on your home.

But remember, your emergency fund should be three to six months of expenses—not income.

On top of that, paying off your home a few months earlier isn’t exactly an emergency.

Believe me, I understand the feelings that go along with being so close to becoming completely debt-free. It can be tempting to throw a bunch of money at your house, and get rid of the mortgage payments. Still, even as much as I hate debt, I wouldn’t put my emergency fund at risk to make it happen.

When you do things like that, Enid, you’re just begging for Murphy to come visit. The moment you write a big check and weaken your emergency fund for something that isn’t an emergency, the transmission in your car will go out or you’ll have to replace the central unit on your home. It’s not worth the risk!

Dear Dave, Should I catch up on my past due bills before saving up $1,000 for Baby Step 1?

-Sharyn Dear Sharyn, That’s exactly what you should do. Get current or make payment arrangements with everyone who’s willing to work with you first.

In the process, make sure you’re keeping your own living necessities in mind—food, shelter, clothing, utilities, and transportation.

After you’ve done that, and saved a beginner emergency fund of $1,000, start your debt snowball and pay off all your debts from smallest largest, except for your home. That’s Baby Step 2. In Baby Step 3, you’ll save up and increase your emergency fund from $1,000 to a full three to six months of expenses. Once you reach this point, you can really start looking toward the future.

In Baby Step 4, start investing 15 percent of your income into Roth IRAs and other pretax retirement plans. College funding for the kids, if there are any, is next in Baby Step 5.

Baby Step 6 is a big one, because this is where you pay off your home early. But Baby Step 7 is the real deal. This is when you’re completely debt-free, and you’re able to build wealth like crazy and give with outrageous generosity!

Dear Motor Medics, My 2008 Ford Explorer has a humming noise coming from the rear of the vehicle but also a little from the front. I took it to the shop to find the cause and they said it is the rear wheel bearings that have failed. The cost for the replacement was almost $1K. I had wheel bearings replaced on the front of my other Explorer which is a year older just a year ago and it was less than half the price. Cost aside, I still have the noise from both front and rear, but it is much less noticeable. Could the bearings have been installed wrong?

-Casey in Reno, Nevada There could be more than one thing going on here. Let’s start with the cost. Rear wheel bearings often are a pressed-in type in the rear and require much more labor to replace so that can double the cost. As for the noise still being there after the repair but much less pronounced, you likely have two issues. It could be that one of the bearings in the rear is defective, but it could also be that one of the fronts are also out or possibly a Cupped tires will mimic the sound tire issue. of failed wheel bearings. Look for tire cupping and consult with your local shop and see what their opinion is. When dealing with noise it is important to look at all the factors that could cause them.

-Take care, The Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2013 Chevrolet Impala that has a throttle body problem. I have had to replace two of them in 100k miles. There was no warranty on either one and they are expensive. The dealership that replaced them said that the ethanol in the fuel causes soot deposits on them and that is what is destroying the throttle bodies. Since I live in Minnesota, all the fuel I can find contains ethanol. What can I do so it will not wreck my parts?

Lets start off with truth backed up by some facts. Hard to find in today’s world but its always there. We have replaced many of these throttle bodies in our own shop, they can be problematic. The problem is with the design of the part, not the fuel. Just look at how many other millions of vehicles on the road that do not have a problem with the throttle body. Look at ethanol too. When you go into a buffet and see those ethanol candles burning under the food trays, do they give off smoke, they do not, gasoline would. Ethanol is a clean burning fuel. In over 30 years of using it in our own shop we have never seen damage caused by it when used properly. Ask your mechanic why ethanol caused the damage, they probably won’t be able to answer, and Chevrolets own answer is that it is not the cause.
