Maximize your shot clock of life -By Harvey Mackay When you are a youngster, you never think about tomorrow.

You take tomorrow for granted, thinking you have an endless string of days ahead of you.

In short, you put things off. You are not really aware of the shot clock of life.

As the years fly by, you begin to become more aware that there isn’t always going to be a tomorrow. You understand and appreciate today more than ever.

Having this mindset gives us a sense of urgency. We can’t continue to put off important things until tomorrow. We have to devote time to our goals and dreams today.

Perhaps the best example I can give of someone who won’t let the clock run down is my close personal friend, Sid Hartman, who turns 100 on March 15. Sid has been a mainstay in Minnesota sports for a span of eight decades. He is, in every sense of the word, a real buzzer-beater. By most human standards, Sid is in triple overtime.

Sid never played any of the games he writes about and never made it to college, much less journalism school. His success is rooted in pure doggedness.

He still writes a column for the “Star Tribune” in Minneapolis three times a week, a job he’s had for 75 years. Plus he has commented on sports on WCCO Radio for 65 years and broadcasts “The Sports Huddle” show every Sunday morning. He continues to build his immense network, which includes every athlete or team owner that’s ever been part of Minnesota sports, plus many national sports superstars and coaches. You don’t pass through the Twin Cities sports scene without getting to know Sid Hartman.

He owns the most important advantage of sports reporting: one of the biggest, most reliable networks of sports sources of any journalist in the country. Once you’re in Sid’s file, you don’t ever get cut. You’re in it for life.

Sid’s network is second to none. In my entire career, I have never once heard a successful person, like Sid, say he or she regretted putting time and energy into building a network of contacts. You must always have your antennae up. Never pass up an opportunity to meet new people. I call this “dig your well before you’re thirsty.”

I was privileged to co-chair huge

events for Sid’s 85th and 90th birthday bashes that brought in people like former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz, University of Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight, former Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, and New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, to name only a few.

And Sid fondly refers to all of them as “my close personal friend.” Sid Hartman is in a league by himself.

There are more than 7.6 billion people on the planet, and few work harder than Sid, even at his age. He reminds me of Kemmons Wilson, the founder of Holiday Inn, who was asked to give the commencement speech at his high school.

He said, “My advice is to work half days every day. And it doesn’t matter which half – the first 12 hours or the second 12 hours.”

Sid is also one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met. He is the only person I know who can follow you in a revolving door and still come out ahead of you. He hates to lose. Sid understands that competition is healthy. It keeps you sharp.

It makes you better. Competition drives people to work harder and dig down deeper to deliver more than they ever thought they could.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Coffee A majority of the coffee used today comes from a plastic container, already ground and ready for use. It is usually measured into a coffee maker, water added and the result is our morning wake-up.

In early years, if one purchased coffee, it usually came as whole beans. The beans were either ground by the customer in the store, (Red Rooster Coffee), or it was taken home and put through a hand cranked coffee grinder.

Coffee makers came on to the scene in later years. In early years, coffee was added to a large coffee pot that usually stayed toward the back of the wood cook stove. When more coffee was needed, more coffee was added to the existing grounds and more water was added. The result was dark colored, but not necessarily good tasting.

My grandmother told that in their family a new pot of coffee was started every Sunday morning and was added to and used until Saturday night. She told

of one happening involving her brother’s shoe. It disappeared on Monday and wasn’t found until the following Saturday night when the coffee pot was dumped out.

So they had coffee on her brother’s shoe all week and didn’t know it.

The big pots were replaced by smaller pots called drip coffee makers. The coffee was added to the upper chamber and hot water was poured through the coffee and the result was a better tasting beverage. When electricity arrived, coffee percolators were very popular and still being used on a limited basis today.

Coffee was not always made from coffee. Families were located a long horse and wagon ride from the store, so coffee was not always available on the home pantry shelf. Also, when money was scarce, families substituted less expensive materials in place of coffee.

The least expensive replacement and most easily available product was acorns. Dried dandelion were sometimes used. Several grains were used including barley and rye.

The substitute items were roasted in the oven until they turned a darker color. They were then ground in the coffee grinder and used to create a beverage in the same way coffee was made. Many individuals added milk or cream to their beverage to cover unpleasant flavors. Used in this way, these beverages were quite pleasant.

Sid may never make it to the Baseball or Football Hall of Fame, but if they ever get around to a Close Personal Friends Hall of Fame, he’ll be the first one they call. Talent is a gift, but like many gifts, we often take it for granted. If Sid Hartman had applied equal energy, dedication and perseverance to any other career – sales, for example, I’m positive he would have achieved the same great success he attained as a sportswriter.

I’m not quite to Sid’s age yet, but I’m trying to maximize my shot clock before the game is over. Give me the person who uses 110 percent of what they’ve got, like Sid, and they’ll find a way to get the job done when no one else can.

The last grain beverage that I am aware of that was sold in stores was a product called Postum. It’s taste was different from coffee, but was actually great with a small scoop of ice cream added to it. I must say that I do miss it.

Obituaries Ann M. Nietfeld

Ann M. Nietfeld, age 89 of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at the CentraCare Melrose Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 3 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Ann was born July 8, 1930 to Leonard and Caroline (Spillman) Kuefler in Lake George Township, the youngest of 12 children. She was a graduate of Belgrade High School. On April 25, 1949 she was united in marriage to Sylvester Nietfeld at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, Minnesota. Ann and Sylvester and their family built and operated a dairy and crop farm in Getty Township.

Ann was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

Sylvester and Ann were active in farm organizations especially Farm Bureau and Communicating for Agriculture receiving various awards including Family Farm of the year. Ann was on the Melrose School

Board for 25 years and active in many organizations including Diocese Council of Catholic Women, Daughters of Isabella, American Legion, and 4-H. Ann’s passion was art. She was very creative and loved to do crafts, paint (oil and watercolor) beautify (home decor and garden) and she had a flair for fashion, fabric and color. She loved photos, especially of family/friends and the beautiful Minnesota farm countryside.

Ann was an avid bowler (Ann’s Angels) and enjoyed playing cards, dice, cribbage, and watching the MN Vikings and Twins.

In her younger years she was an avid snowmobiler, played community volleyball and tennis and even participated in plowing contests. She most enjoyed gatherings visiting with family and friends.

She is survived by her children; Sandra, Richard (Michelle Olmshenk), Robert (Michell Johnson), David, William, Deborah (Kelly Lanier), Michael and Patrick (Suzy Rosenow). Grandchildren; Joseph, James, John, Jaycob, Nicholas, Angela, Heidi, Anna, Sean, Ryan, and Benjamin; great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Her welcome home committee include her husband, Sylvester; sons, Joseph and Timothy; grandson, Eric; parents; and siblings.

state patrol training, Dave was placed as a Minnesota State Trooper in the Grand Marais area for eight years and served in the St. Cloud area for 28 years. He also worked for the St. Cloud V.A. Hospital in Food Service and the Soil Conservation Department.

He was a member and trustee of Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. Dave enjoyed woodworking, running marathons, 5k and 10k races, and snowshoeing.

Survivors include his wife, Aurelia Schwanke of St. Cloud; brother, Don (Ruth) Schwanke of Buffalo; stepsister, Marlene Hiliger of Texas; mother-in-law, Lydia Zenzen of Albany; and many loving relatives and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Luella Schwanke; and father-in-law, Clarence Zenzen.

Serving as casket bearers were Daryl Zenzen, Heath Schwanke, Heather Schwanke, Brian Uphus, Bradley Uphus, and Bruce Uphus.

David E. “Dave” Schwanke, age 74 of St. Cloud, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Monday, March 2 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Cloud with Rev. Bruce Timm officiating. Interment will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

David Edgar Schwanke was born October 21, 1945 in Melrose, Minnesota to Edgar and Luella (Meyer) Schwanke. Dave graduated from Sauk Centre High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage to Aurelia Zenzen at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. After completing his

He began working for Multi Foods as a junior in high school and continued to work there for 16 years. He worked several other positions in freight distribution and spent 5 years as the manager of the Elmdale Creamery. He was currently self-employed. Jeff especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was well known for his cooking and barbecue skills. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling and watching the Minnesota Vikings.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, David and Benita of Elmdale; sisters, Jolie (Jay) Gombos of Rice and Sara (Nicole) Baggenstoss of Jacksonville, Florida; brother, Jay of Elmdale; nieces and nephews, Isabella Czeck, Lynsey (Goddaughter), Landon, Levi and Lara Baggenstoss, Jordan and Jamie Gombos, Kyle, Kaleb and Madeline Hinchliffe and many aunt, uncles, cousins and friends.

Rita C. Blommel

Rita C. Blommel, age 89 of Freeport, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, March 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the church in Freeport. A rosary will be prayed by the Freeport Christian Women and Senior Citizens at 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Rita Catherine Rueter was born September 10, 1930 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Eleanore (Hoeschen) Rueter. She attended Flowing Well Country School. Rita married Maurus Blommel on September 5, 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple farmed near Freeport until their retirement in 1983, at which they moved to their new home in Freeport. Rita was a resident of Parkview for the last year. She was a homemaker and had also worked at Charlie’s Cafe and Jennie-O.

Roger Christen

A Mass of Christian Burial for Roger Christen, age 72, will be at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church of Farming, MN at 11:00 AM on March 14.

Roger was born September 15, 1947 to Herbert and Theresa (Douvier) Christen. He graduated from Albany High School in 1965 and was drafted into the Army in 1966. He went to medic training and was stationed at Cu Chi in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division as a medic. He married Linda Trulson in 1971.

He enlisted in the Air Force and became an Environmental Health Specialist in 1973 living in many different states. Roger and Linda were later divorced.

Rita was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Christian Women, and Senior Citizens. She loved to bake, along with sewing, quilting, word find puzzles, and playing cards.

She participated in various card groups.

Survivors include her children, Ron (Marj) Blommel of Eagle Lake, Tom (Mary Kay) Blommel of Freeport, Gene (Marlene) Blommel of Freeport, Carol (Ron) Funk of Sauk Centre, and Brenda (Reinie) Gruber of Clear Lake, 17 grandchildren; 26 greatgrandchildren; brothers, Clarence and Joe Rueter; and sisters, Bernadette Ritter and Rosemary Ardoin.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Maurus Blommel on August 8, 2007; her parents; grandson, Darin Blommel; brothers, Julius and Ben Rueter; and sister, Juliana Hollermann.

Serving as casket bearers will be Pam Laing, Paula Elfering, Jennifer Lang, Lori Lemm, Dacia Deter, Sheena Black, Megan Gruber, and Jamie Gruber. Cross bearer will be Andy Blommel, scripture bearer will be Abby Larson, and statue bearer will be Austin Gruber. Gift bearers will be Mike Elfering and Mark Elfering. Readers will be Russ Funk and Tina Gruber. Reading petitions and the eulogy will be Sherry Eveslage and Leah Trierweiler.

Roger worked at the St. Cloud Veterans Hospital from 1977 as a Social Service Assistant for alcoholic and chemical dependent veterans until he retired. He was a member of the Albany American Legion and lifetime member of the Melrose VFW. He enjoyed fishing with family and friends. He did some hunting, mostly with black powder or using a crossbow.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Theresa.

Roger is survived by his sister, Jeanette Royce; children, Michelle Christen, Jeremiah Christen, and Matthew (Tanya) Christen; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I went through a divorce a couple of months ago, and I’m not sure what to do next. I received custody of our kids, ages 13 and 15, plus I have a good job and I got the house in the settlement.

It’s a nice, simple home, but it’s paid for and worth about $200,000. I receive $1,400 a month in child support, and I got $125,000, which was half our savings. I also have no other debt. Most of my friends are telling me I should begin investing, but they all have different ideas about where I should put the money. Can you give me some guidance?

Dear Michelle, I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through this. Divorce is hard enough when it’s just a couple, but it must be incredibly difficult with kids involved.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the February Senior High student of the month, senior Jacqueline Pechan.

She is the daughter of Donna Pechan and Tyrus Klemish.

Jaxx, as she is also known, enjoys arts and crafts, spending time with her six siblings and helping others with homework. She plans to attend Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She will be doing a work study at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and also plans on working at Hobby Lobby.

Jaxx has stayed busy during her high school career, participating in tennis eighth and ninth grade, softball seventh through sophomore year, volleyball as a seventh grader and also as a senior. She was in band all the way through her junior year, including marching band and participating in the theatre department seventh through freshman year. Her achievements include being the art student of the year for 2018-19, lettering in tennis, softball and band. She recently was selected as one

of the two Sourcewell Student of Character representing Swanville.

Outside of school Jaxx helps with clean up at the Swanville Midsummer Carnival yearly and also volunteers to work in the concession stand at school for a variety of events. Jacqueline’s favorite thing about school is that she really looks forward to the school’s lunches. Each of them are absolutely delicious. They have the power to make a bad day good. She advises other students “sometimes you need homework help and that is nothing to be ashamed of.”

Science Instructor Jason Lee says, “Jaxx is a hardworking and intelligent student. In physics class, she learns quickly and regularly completes assignments ahead of schedule. Jaxx also shows great initiative. She readily asks questions about science or the complex tasks she completes in school. Jaxx is an awesome student to have in class.”

Social studies instructor Tom Bzdok adds, “Jaxx is very deserving of this recognition. She is a pleasure to have in class as well as to be around. She always seems to be in a cheerful mood and never fails to greet you in a friendly manner. Her positive energetic personality is passed on to those around her putting everyone in a better mood. Jaxx is a mature and respectful individual who will certainly be successful in life. Congratulations Jaxx!”

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the February Junior High student of the month, ninth grade student Aliana Pechan.

Ali is the daughter of John and Leslie Pechan.

She enjoys baking, reading, traveling and playing guitar. She also likes hunting and fishing and caring for her variety of animals. She plans on becoming a veterinarian. Ali plays both basketball and softball. She joined the recently formed trap shooting team. She has been in band since 6th grade and this year also joined choir. Ali is a student that is consistently on the A Honor Roll. Ali’s favorite thing about school is being with her friends and playing flute in band. Outside of school Ali is in 4H and also volunteers at the Humane Society.

Math teacher Liza Hasse says, “Ali is well deserving of being chosen as Student of the Month. She works hard to maintain her grades in every class. Ali works independently only seeking help after she has given the problem much thought. Ali is a student that leads by example, she is respectful towards others, she always tries to do the right thing, and if she wants to achieve a goal she works hard to reach that goal. I give Ali a lot of credit as she was the only female that participated in Trap Shooting last year and she is going to participate again this year. I enjoy working with Ali and look forward to continue working with her.”

We all wonder, at one time or another, how a group of people can watch a person being beaten or robbed, or fall ill in a crowded mall or on busy street corner, and no one responds. We see the ravages of war, watch people die on a battlefield, see disabled veterans trying to adjust to life with artificial limbs and seem to accept it as “normal” in today’s

culture. It seems as though the pain and suffering of others matter little to anyone except the one enduring the hardships.

The Psalmist who wrote Psalm 94 was troubled by the evil in the world.

He looked around and saw people oppressed. He was aware of calloused leaders whose only concern was for themselves. He was troubled by the lack of concern for widows and children and asked, “God, if You created ears for people to hear, and eyes for people to see, why don’t You hear the cries and see the suffering of those whom You created?”

Do something God! So, has God, like us, become insensitive to the needs of people and the condition of the world? Does He not care about what is happening to His creation? Indeed He does.

“He will repay them and destroy them for their wickedness,” says the Psalmist. But until He does, we are responsible to bring His hope and healing to the suffering.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve been listening to all the talk about driverless cars and cars that can take control and it scares me. I started driving in the 70s and back then cars didn’t even have a computer in them. I don’t know if I want to be sharing the road with robots. I just want to know if they are safe, how they work, and when they will be here so I can start looking out for them.

We started to see it used as a safety enhancer in vehicles a while back to aide you in the way of helping to prevent collisions while backing up and when getting too close to someone in front of you. The systems would be able to reduce throttle and apply the brakes if you were in a “bad spot” and in danger of a collision. The tech has now advanced with the enhancement of laser sensors and GPS and super high definition cameras and much more that allow the cars to navigate to destinations and avoid collisions. The cars are on the road now being tested and chances are you have seen one and don’t even know it. They have logged over a million miles on America’s roads. As for how safe they are is yet to be seen. The future is headed our way!

off and other things like my personal settings are changing. I saw on the news that cars were getting hacked and taken over by computer people. How can I tell if this is happening to me?

-Marie in Detroit, Michigan Dear Marie, The symptoms you are experiencing sound more like things related to a Body Control Module or BCM for short. You need to have it diagnosed to know for sure before you spend the money to replace it but this is a good time to address the “hacking” you bring up. Your car being a 2005 Impala it’s not susceptible to the hacking level you may have seen on the news. The newer cars have been given so much tech that the electronic systems run things like throttle, brake and steering and can be accessed through the Telematics systems and with the right circumstances and information a smart hacker could gain access to some systems controlling the vehicle. Manufacturers are working diligently to stop this from happening and hopefully it will never be a problem. Consult your local mechanic and talk about your symptoms. The car will need to be scanned and the effected systems checked and repaired.

Eugene T. “Gene” Waldorf Eugene T. “Gene” Waldorf, age 84 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 29, 2020.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m.

Friday, March 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls on Monday, March 9.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

Friday at the church in Freeport.

Gene was born in St. Cloud, MN to Frederick and Erma Waldorf on February 25, 1936. He graduated from St. Cloud Cathedral High School in 1954. He married Bernadine Riemer on April 25, 1959 in Little Falls, MN. He was a 1964 graduate of the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology and spent most of his career as an engineering specialist, designing automated manufacturing equipment for the 3M Company. In his early work at Honeywell Corporation, he worked on the guidance system for an Apollo Space Mission. Gene served twelve years as State Senator for District 66 in St. Paul and in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1976 to 1980. He completed his service in the legislature in 1992. He was a Korean War era veteran, serving in the Army.

Gene loved adventures and enjoyed sailing, gardening, woodworking, putting out loon nests each spring, checking for invasive species on the lake, piano playing, golfing, reading, and running in 5 marathons. He cherished time with family, especially when he could whip up some of “Grandma’s pancakes” on a Sunday

Harvey G. Mayers, age 82 of Freeport, passed away February 14, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Father Daniel Walz officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. at the church. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Harvey, the oldest child of George and Alvina (Poepping) Mayers, was born on the family farm in Oak Township, Minnesota on April 9, 1937. He resided there most of his life and later lived south of Freeport where he passed away as a result of a fire in his farmhouse.

Harvey loved crop farming and spent many seasons doing similar work for neighbors and relatives. It was important for him to pray the rosary daily, especially saying it at 6 p.m. with KASM radio. He enjoyed being with people. It gave him pleasure that he was credited for matchmaking. His hobbies included attending auctions, and owning and breeding Belgian horses. For a

morning. He had a keen sense of direction and, with Bernie, took the family on many road trips, including a memorable trip from Minnesota to El Salvador. He was an active member in the Catholic Church, serving as lector, choir member, Eucharistic Minister, Trustee, driver for monthly Masses for the Handicapped, speaker for Sacrificial Giving, and presider at word and communion services.

Gene’s community service included serving as a Trustee and Board Chair of the Initiative Foundation, member of the St. Cloud Diocese Catholic Community Foundation Board of Directors, and the Advisory Board of the Sauk River Watershed District. Gene was an active member of the Big Birch Lake Association (BBLA), serving as its President from 19952007. In 2019, he and Bernie received the BBLA Friends of the Lake Award for their 27 years of service to the organization.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick and Erma Waldorf; brother, Ron and his wife, Marie Waldorf; sister, Margie and her husband, Ron Skelton; and other beloved extended family members.

Gene is survived by his wife of sixty years, Bernie Waldorf; his six children, Jeanne (Dean) Peterson of Upsala, Paul (Barb) Waldorf of Oakdale, Sr. Bridget Waldorf, SSND of Dallas, TX, Renee (Jody) King of Albany, John (Katie) Waldorf of Sunrise, and David Waldorf of Sartell; grandchildren, Curt (Lisa) Peterson, Matt (Lauren) Peterson, Christy (Adam) Wehlage, Anna (Tyler) Wolbeck, Amy Waldorf, Greg Waldorf, Megan Waldorf, Elizabeth Waldorf, Joshua Waldorf, Joanna Waldorf, Benjamin Waldorf, Anthony King, Zachary King, and Samantha King; greatgrandchildren, Jack, Rohan, Charlie, Luetta, Addie, Phoebe, Oliver, and Charles; and many other relatives.

Surviving family members are siblings, Arne (Diana) of North St. Paul, Hilary (Doris) of Fridley, Vi Geislinger of Litchfield, Vali (Ron) Flint of Richmond, Lill (Jim) Wawra of Corcoran, Leona Wieland of Sartell, Ange OSF of San Rafael, Mexico, Fran (Michael) Fischer of Blaine, Ernie (Jean Schlosser) of Corcoran, and Morrie (Char) of Freeport.

Thirty nieces and nephews, 69 grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, including his Godchildren, Lisa Schloegl and Darian “Harv” Geislinger.

Harvey was preceded in death by his parents, George and Alvina; brother, Melvin; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Geislinger, George Wieland and Dave Bolling.

Marie A. “Mayme” Imdieke M a r i e A. “Mayme” Imdieke, age 102 of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 6 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.

Friday at the church in Greenwald. St. Ann’s Christian Women and Catholic United Financial will pray a rosary at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

Marie Anne Marthaler was born April 8, 1917 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Simon and Rose (Schwegmann) Marthaler. She attended St. John’s Catholic School. She was united in marriage to Raymond Imdieke on June 5, 1940 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

The couple farmed near Greenwald until their retirement in 1976 when they moved to town.

Raymond and Marie were also custodians at the Greenwald Bank for 21 years. She has been a resident of Mother of Mercy since July 2014.

Mayme was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald, St. Ann’s Christian Mothers, St. Andrew’s Catholic

United Financial, and Daughters of Isabella Joan of Arc Circle of Melrose. She enjoyed quilting, baking, cooking for her family, playing cards, bowling, reading, watching the Minnesota Twins, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Gladys (Tony) Meyer of Brooklyn Park, Carol Athmann of Melrose, Alice (Ron) Loxtercamp of Melrose, Roger (Deb) Imdieke of Greenwald, Henry (Doris) Imdieke of Sauk Rapids, and Jeffrey (Jonelle) Imdieke of St. Cloud; 17 grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Kevin, Kirk, Dale, Steve, Laurel, Lynn, Chad, Kelly, Doug, Cody, Ryan, Holly, Ben, Kallista, and Nikki; step-grandchildren, Gabbie, Paolo, Miranda, Dan, Dustin, and Travis; 27 greatgrandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Lydia Schulzetenberg of Melrose.

Lorell Dale Anderson Lorell Dale “Andy” Anderson, of Stone Mountain, GA passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the age of 92.

Lorell was born in Upsala, Minnesota on October 2, 1927, the only child of John and Florence (Berg) Anderson. He graduated from Upsala High School in 1945, was drafted by the Army and discharged early in the winding down of forces after WWII. Always mechanically inclined, he began working for creameries associated with Land O’ Lakes, eventually moving to Minneapolis to work full-time for the company in 1949.

He worked for Land O’ Lakes until he retired in 1992, progressing from driving a sales truck to developing the company’s national foodservice sales program. He met Alice (Peterson) Anderson in the late 40s, they married in 1951, and then he was drafted again and served as a radio operator

in Germany during the Korean War. After his (second) discharge he and Alice settled into their own home, the first of nine they would own in Minnesota, Maryland and Georgia over a 68-year marriage. After retirement he and Alice wintered in Georgia and summered at their cabin on Pine Lake near Upsala. Lorell loved to have a project to do (fast and with total absorption), loved 50s era country music, and loved to sing bass, lending his signature sound to a succession of Lutheran church choirs over 50 years. He was Papa to his grandkids, generous, edgy at times, really smart, and hilarious all the more so because he rarely broke his deadpan countenance. We’ll miss him a lot.

He is survived by his devoted wife Alice, daughters Nancy (Dave) Bartkowicz, Circle Pines, MN and Natalie (David) Batchelor, Atlanta, GA; son Bill (Ann) Anderson, Hopkins, MN; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren (and counting).

The family will be celebrating Papa’s life in a private ceremony, singing a few of his favorite hymns and wishing we had a good bass in the mix.

Anthony J. “Tony” Janke, age 90 of Melrose, died peacefully on Saturday, February 29, 2020 in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Tony will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, March 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Arockiya Newton concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the church in Meire Grove.

Anthony John Janke was born May 4, 1929 in Spring Hill, Minnesota to John and Elizabeth (Korf) Janke. He married Rosemary Zierden on February 20, 1970 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Tony was employed at Space Center in Minneapolis for 37 years and commuted all those years from their home on Big Birch Lake. He retired at the age of 65. Tony was a simple family man with strong faith. He lived out his faith by putting his neighbors, friends and family before himself. He was always willing to help anyone who needed him. Everyone that met him loved his witty sense of humor.

Tony was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Loved to tend

Robert R. “Bob” Meldaus Robert R. “Bob” Meldaus, age 71 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A graveside service was held Wednesday at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Military honors were provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Robert Ray Meldaus was born December 30, 1948 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Clarence and Loretta (Nagler) Meldaus.

Burglary: February 28, 2020: At approximately 7:42 am, received a report of a business burglary at Kaiser Iron & Auto, located on Cable Road in the city of Sobieski, MN. According to the Sheriff’s Office, sometime between 5:00 pm on 2-26-2020 and 7:15 am on 2-27-2020, the suspect(s) made entry inside the building through the back window. According to the initial investigation, at least 2-3 catalytic converters were reported stolen. This case is still under investigation.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Township officials among local groups visiting the Capitol Last week was busy at the Capitol in St. Paul, with visitors filling the halls of the State Office Building making their way to appointments with legislators.

I visited with a group of township officials who had reserved a meeting room in the Capitol building because all the available meeting spaces in our office building were in use. The upcoming presidential primary was a topic of discussion, with several wondering why their political party preference would be disclosed as a result of voting in the primary. The ballot each voter requests will be made known to the political parties. In addition, two parties whose platform deals mainly with the use of marijuana have also gained major party status in Minnesota. They, too, will receive details on what ballots people requested when voting.

Because of that concern, a bill was heard in the House last week that would curtail the information stream from the primary. If the bill becomes law, each political party would receive information only on those who voted in that party’s primary. Even though the bill could not become law before this week’s primary, it could be enacted in time for the voter information to be affected. To me, it seems a bit too quick to change legislation that was passed less than a year ago. However, I wouldn’t mind if the entire idea of the presidential primary were ditched. One reason is the cost, estimated to run between $12 million and $15 million, which the state is set to cover.

Township annual meetings and elections are coming up next week. One of the main items that town boards administer is the maintenance of their roads. It’s a challenging job, as townships receive only a small percentage of gas tax receipts in Minnesota. Yet, township roads account for nearly 40 percent of all road miles in the state. In all, there are approximately 55,000 miles of township roads in Minnesota, with 1,300 of them located within District 12B. MAT, the Minnesota Association of Townships, has provided other interesting facts about townships. Statewide, there are 1,781 townships, with 34 of them located right here in District 12B. Nearly one million residents of our state live in townships. In District 12B, the number of folks residing in townships is just over 21,000, which represents 53 percent of the total population of the district.

A bill that would allocate another $30 million to the state’s Border to Border broadband program passed out of the Greater Minnesota Jobs and Economic Development Committee last week. That’s on top of the $40 million put into the program last year. Those dollars have already been awarded for projects scheduled for completion soon. Our district fared well in the latest round of broadband grants.

the Lake Mary area southwest of Alexandria, another near Forada, and the third in the industrial park area of Melrose.

In anticipation of possible spring flooding, that same committee heard legislation that would replenish the state’s disaster fund. Because of near-record flooding last year, the fund is in immediate need of $9 million to cover additional costs from last year. FEMA increased those damages from $40 million to $76 million, and since the state is obligated for 25 percent of the federal estimate, that comes to $9 million.

We went into winter with a full moisture soil profile, in addition to near-record levels in lakes and rivers. Much depends on the rate of spring thaw, but early estimates called for the potential of severe flooding. However, the ground has very little frost and we haven’t had much snow in the past few weeks. If this gradual warm-up continues and we don’t get too much additional spring precipitation, we may escape major statewide flooding.
