Someone compiled this interesting list to illustrate what just 10 words can teach us.

(I’ve searched for the identity of the writer, to no avail. If anyone can fill in that blank, I promise I will put that information out there!)

This list is very useful as an everyday guide. I’ve added my thoughts to the brief explanations. Here goes: 1. The most selfish one letter word – “I.” Avoid it.

2. The most satisfying two letter word – “We.” Use it.

3. The most poisonous three letter word – “Ego.” Overcome or kill it.

4. The most used four letter word – “Love.” Value it.

5. The most pleasing five letter word – “Smile.” Keep it.

6. The fastest spreading six letter word – “Rumors.” Ignore them.

7. The hardest working seven letter word – “Success.” Achieve it.

8. The most enviable eight letter word – “Jealousy.” Distance it.

9. The most powerful nine letter word – “Knowledge.” Acquire it.

10. The most valued ten letter word – “Friendship.” Maintain it.

I/Ego. Let’s combine the first and third words. In my opinion, you should use the word “you” ten times for every time you say “I.” Using “I” too often is an indication that you are more interested in yourself than in others.

That’s an instant turnoff.

Too much I, I, I is indeed selfish, but it’s also like ego. Ego trips have a dangerous destination. I can still hear my parents saying: “Don't hang your hat higher than you can reach.” And my dad’s stern advice, “It is far better to have other people say how great you are.”

We. Whenever possible, say “we” instead of I. Include others in your accomplishments, activities, and ideas. Especially in business, acknowledge contributions of your peers.

There’s strength in numbers, and this is proof positive.

Love. The Beatles insisted “All you need is love,” and I think that’s a great start. Love may be the “most used” four letter word, and with good reason. You can love your family, love your neighbor, love your country, love your work and love life.

Smile. I learned years ago that one of the most powerful things you can do to have influence over others is to smile at them. I’m a big believer in the proverb, “Don’t open a shop unless you know how to smile.” That’s why I never underestimate the value of a smile. You shouldn’t go to work without a smile . . . and that goes for your personal life too.

Rumors. The Internet has brought gossiping up to warp speed. Someone calculated that, if a rumor was started at midday, and was repeated within two seconds by everyone who heard it to two other people, who repeated it and kept the cycle going, by about 6:30 p.m. the same day everyone on earth would have heard it.

Spreading rumors about co-workers can create a hostile environment that customers will pick up on. This is a good reason for avoiding gossip. Add to that the fact that I’ve

seen many deals go down, due to gossip.

Success. Success comes in many forms and means different things to different people.

In the working world, it is often defined as landing the perfect job, achieving a targeted income level, occupying a corner office or owning a business.

My own formula for success includes dogged determination, focus and the ability to finish, daring to dream, owning and learning from mistakes, looking at problems as opportunities, and staying positive. Success is a journey, not a destination.

Jealousy. This word is pure poison. And we all know how deadly poison can be.

Knowledge. While the old theory that we use only 10 percent of our brains has been widely debunked, there’s plenty of evidence that we can increase our brainpower, retention and focus. Books and websites offer all kinds of help. Check out every opportunity to broaden your horizons. Knowledge is power.

Friendship. The best ship to sail is friendship. I enjoy meeting new people because I get a different view of the world. I may not agree with everything I hear, but what a way to expand your mind.

the winter months was harvested.

My first memories of cutting wood included the use of axes and a crosscut saw.

The wood logs were stacked on a 4 wheeled wagon with a post on each corner to hold the load. It was then pulled home with the tractor and stacked in the yard. In earlier years, it was loaded on a wagon or sled and pulled home with the team. It was later cut to needed size with a “buzz” saw on a tractor. The sized wood was then either neatly ranked by the house or moved to the woodshed. Then, as needed, it was carried to the house, placed in the wood box and burned.

In later years a chain saw reduced the hard work of wood cutting. It eliminated loading those heavy logs on the wagon, lifting the logs to the shelf on the “buzz” saw and moving the sized pieces to the wood pile. The chain saw allowed the logs to be sized to acceptable lengths in the woods and loaded on the pickup and taken directly to the wood pile. Larger chunks could be sawed lengthwise to reduce the size and weight for handling.

As the population became more affluent, the use of wood for cooking and heating was replaced by gas, oil and electricity. All of which involve basically no physical labor other than setting the thermostat or turning a button on the front of the stove. This is different than in

Along with the changing colors in the woods, we may possibly recollect some fall memories from our earlier years.

Fall was when we finished the harvest, whether it was filling the corn crib, carrying the sacks of potatoes down to the cellar, getting the canned vegetables on the shelves in the basement, adding a few squirrels, rabbits, ducks, pheasants, grouse or maybe a deer to the menu. There was a small inner excitement when preparing for the coming winter.

Along with the cooling temperatures, there was a change in the family's schedule due to the start of the school year. The kids would not say, “I'm going to be a fifth grader,” they could say “I am a fifth grader.” There were some new and resized school clothing adding to the student's excited anticipation of the coming school year. The excitement was not for the new learning experience, but rather being able to again be with the kids that they hadn't been able to see for the last three months. Maybe some kids are looking for that special person they had been thinking about all summer.

Due to the season change, the wood ticks, deer flies and mosquitoes are no longer a constant pest while spending time in the woods. As a result, paired with the temperature reduction, it seemed that there was an urge to go to the woods. The pleasant temperature, along with the need to accomplish something worthwhile in the woods, there was a need to cut wood. (After all, you couldn't just spend pleasant time in the woods without accomplishing something,) As a result, wood that was needed for heat and cooking during

Leroy B. Ahrens

Leroy B. Ahrens, age 70 of Grey Eagle, died unexpectedly on Friday, September 10, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, September 15 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Leroy Bernard Ahrens was born December 2, 1950 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Norbert and Caroline (Boeckermann) Ahrens. He was united in marriage to Marque Harms on February 20, 1971 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Leroy was a self-employed truck driver who spent over 50 years over-the-road truck driving. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Leroy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed ice fishing, hunting deer, bear, and elk, taking trips to Canada, gambling, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and loved giving everyone a nickname.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Marque Ahrens of Grey Eagle; children, Jeff (Catherine) Ahrens of Burtrum, Lori (Jim) Dreger of Grey Eagle, Jamie (Sophia) Ahrens of Long Prairie, and Lisa (Curtis) Rousan of Waconia; 11 grandchildren, Brittany, Cole, Lance, Justin, Karley, Greyson, McKinley, Harrison, Brayden, Reid, and Lincoln; five greatgrandchildren, Makenna, Aleigha, Wyatt, Blake, and Aubree; brothers and sisters, Anna (Paul) Graves of Long Prairie, Jane (Leroy) Schultz of Eagle Bend, John (Sandy) Ahrens of Grey Eagle, and Joe Ahrens (Denise Leagjeld) of Carlos.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Ahrens; and sister, Joyce Revering.

James C. “Jim” Losey

James C. “Jim” Losey, age 70 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private graveside service with military honors will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date.

James Charles Losey was born September 20, 1950 in Fort Carson, Colorado to Clarence and Ila (Ayers) Losey. After graduating high school, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 27, 1968.

He served during Vietnam and was honorably discharged on October 14, 1978. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Sauk Centre. Jim loved music, had a big heart, and was very proud of his service to his country.

Survivors include his two sons, Chris (Lynn) Losey of Sauk Centre and Jonathan (Katie) Losey of Sauk Centre; five grandchildren, Diminicus, Avi, Zoe, HayLe, and C.J.; and brother, Nick (Joann) Losey of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Penny.

Memorials are preferred.

Lyle R. Karasch, age 57 of Sauk Centre passed away suddenly on Friday, September 10, 2021, at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 20 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Lyle Ray Karasch was born March 10, 1964 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to Raymond and Norma (Gamradt) Karasch. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School and then served in the United States Army from 1984 to 1989. On June 3, 1995, he married Tracy Beilke at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Lyle worked as a guide in Montana, at Schurman Excavating, as a chemical sprayer for Cenex, at Zacher Excavating, Traut Wells, and at various farms including the Gamradt farm. Lyle ended his career being self-employed and helping Stelling Incorporated and Jacob Gamradt.

Lyle was known for his huge sense of humor, wittiness, hard work, intelligence, tall tale storytelling, and sometimes being a bit naughty.

“Big” is a word that could describe a lot about him; big heart, big personality, big smile, and big goofball. His charisma being an inspiration to all those around him up until the last day. He lived life to the beat of his own drum. Lyle stood on the fence of life and looked at both sides, good or bad, he made it fun.

He was a man who worked hard, played hard, loved hard, and slept hard. Nothing he did was easy. What came easy was the love he had for his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.

He was not a materialistic man, but what he had he cherished which was mostly the people in his life. In many ways, Lyle Karasch was “the richest man in town”.

His great ability to operate machinery and equipment came in handy for those who needed him. Lyle had a nose for the need of others; often showing up at just the right time to help or lend a listening ear. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching tractor pulls, snowmobiling, going to Pioneer Days, camping, and trapping.

Lyle’s free spirit is a trait that has been greatly admired, this and his big heart will live long in our memories of him. Like Lyle would say, “Work it, work it, work it.”

Survivors include his wife, Tracy Karasch; children, Victoria (Brad) Becker, Melissa (Dylan) Carpenter, Katey Karasch, Josie Karasch (Chad Schaefer), and Jessica (Jeffrey) Jordon; grandchildren, Jillian, Isabel, Liam, DJ, Emery, Ivory, Luella, LC, Ashley, Lynch, Evelyn, Ellerie, and Jeffrey III; father, Ray Karasch; siblings, Kimberly Flowers-Wink (Bryan Wink), Daryl (Sheila) Karasch, and Mick (Deb) Karasch; parents-in-law, Robert and Lila Beilke; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Rick (Diane) Beilke, Jay (Rachel) Beilke, Kayle (Jamie) Beilke, and Jim Beilke.

Lyle was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Kinsley Schaefer; mother, Norma Karasch on January 21, 2021; brother-in-law, Robert Beilke Jr.; and grandparents, Gerhard and Edith Gamradt.

Thomas ‘Tom’ Ley, age 53 of Fridley, formerly of Melrose passed away Friday, November 13, 2020 after battling an aggressive form of cancer in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 25 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jim Maderak officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Dallas J. Hamilton, age 66 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, September 10, 2021 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Dallas James Hamilton was born July 27, 1955 in Bertha, Minnesota to Laurel and LaVerne (Winnegge) Hamilton. He grew up in Eagle Bend, Minnesota and graduated from Eagle Bend High School in 1973. Dallas served in the U.S. Air Force the same year and was honorably discharged in 1975.

Dallas met and married Doris Wolbeck in 1975 and had their first child later that year.

They had a total of six children of their own but were known to "adopt" many people who needed them. They also have 15 grandchildren over their lives together.

Dallas worked a wide array of jobs until 2006 when he started his own laundry business in Sauk Centre with Doris and their daughters, Cassie (Hamilton) Olmsheid and Kayla (Hamilton) Klejeski. Dallas enjoyed playing with all his grandchildren, having bonfires, and watching old westerns in his spare time.

Beverly M. Biskey

Beverly M. Biskey, 84 year old resident of Swanville, MN passed away Thursday, September 9, 2021 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating.

Burial took place in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls, MN. Caring for Beverly and her family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Swanville, MN. Beverly Mae Pehrson was born on December 27, 1936 in Sauk Centre, MN to the late Clarence and Ida (Ecklund) Pehrson. She was united in marriage to Harold Biskey on May 10, 1986.

After raising her children, Bev started working as a housekeeper at the Douglas County Hospital.

She then worked as a Home Health Aide as well as selling Avon products. Bev was a member of the Swanville American Legion Post #313 Auxiliary. She enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings on TV. Bev was very proud of, and enjoyed spending time with, her family and extended family.

Bev is survived by her children, Vicki Wallin, Glenn Pagel, Jeff (Lynn) Pagel, Barb Robinson, Kathy Halstead, Jim (Erlana) Biskey, Linda (Gary) Gaudreau, and Roxanne (Keith) Oswald; sister, Lois Bense; 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ida Pehrson; husband, Harold “Bud” Biskey; sons, Carl and Vernon Biskey; brother, David Pehrson; and sister, Barbara Jean Pehrson.

He was preceded in death by his parents Donatus and Geraldine, daughter Sandy and Julie, and brother Ken. Anniversary Open House Ivan and Renee Blenker

Ivan and Renee (Hoeschen) Blenker will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, September 19, 2021.

An open house will be held from 12:00-4:00 p.m. with a 1:00 p.m. lunch being served at the Otte Barn in Sauk Centre, 41582 393rd Ave. Ivan and Renee were united in marriage on September 11, 1971 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

The Catholic United Financial’s local Holy Family Parish Volunteer Team of Grey Eagle held their annual Pancake and Sausage Supper at St. Joseph’s Church on Sunday, Sept. 12. The funds raised are used for the Religious Education Program.

I know this is after the fact but before I write this article, I need to let everyone know that I love America. I could not have picked a better place to grow up and then raise my own family. Last week was the anniversary of 9/11.

How could anyone forget. If you are on Facebook or if you watch the news at all, so many people were posting “I/we will not forget”.

My first thought is, no we will not forget.

This was a heinous crime against all Americans. And yet, in all my ministry over the last 15 years at least, I have been impressed that God’s Word wants us to forgive. In fact, God’s Word says to love and forgive in the same way that Jesus has forgiven us. 1 John 3:16 “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” Also, Matthew 6:12; 14-15 “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. In other words, As the Lord’s Prayer so powerfully says (Miller paraphrase) “Lord, forgive me in the same fashion that I forgive those who sin against me.” And then verses 14-15 “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” I am not saying we ought to just plain forget, that would be ludicrous. What I am saying, and I believe God’s Word is saying, remember because history repeats itself. But at the same time, do not hang on to hatred or resentment. Unforgiveness will bring you into a pit of despair.

Funeral services for Mavis Leagjeld, 74, of Long Prairie was held Friday, September 10, 2021 at the Shepherd of the Valley Church in Clarissa.

Mavis Marie (Petrie) Leagjeld was born April, 24, 1947 to Albert and Lydia (Stephan) Petrie in Bertha MN. She grew up in Iona Township and went to Long Prairie High School. She married the love of her life, Thomas Leagjeld on June 11, 1966 in Eagle Bend, MN. Mavis and Tom farmed and raised pigs while Tom also worked at RR Donnelley and she was the homemaker for their five children, Denise, Teresa, Gail, Lisa and Brian.

In the 80’s Tom and Mavis began to create a beautiful refuge of flowers, rock gardens, pathways and ponds for their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to enjoy.

It was surely a work of love that they both spent many hours tending. After Tom retired in 2000 from RR Donnelley, Mavis began working at Custer Floral. Twelve years later she retired so that she was able to take care of Tom who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2012.

Mavis loved gardening, sewing quilts and cloths for their grandchildren, baking birthday cakes and making silk wedding flowers for family and friends.

Mavis is survived by her children, Denise (Joe Ahrens) Leagjeld of Carlos, Teresa (Curt Larson) Hayes of Alexandria, Gail (Mike Kayala) Leagjeld of Little Falls, Lisa (Dan) Warner of Long Prairie and Brian (Jessica Fuchs) Leagjeld of Cold Spring; sisters Betty Pesta; Lucille Mazo; brother Al Petrie; thirteen grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Albert and Lydia Petrie, her husband Tom on March 17, 2016; grandson Timothy Leagjeld; five brothers, Virgil, Raymond, Willard, Loren and Merle Petrie and her sister Mary Jane Kennedy.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Melvina M. Brix, 99, of Albany and formerly of Avon who died Thursday at Mother of Mercy Care Center in Albany.

Rev. Julius Beckermann officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

Melvina was born November 28, 1921 in St. Wendel Township to Vincent & Anna (Pogatshnik) Murphy. She married Robert Brix on June 27, 1949 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

Melvina worked as a nanny, waitress and later for Avon State Bank and Hanaver Gear (Columbia Gear) as a bookkeeper until her retirement in August of 1981. She is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon and was a life long Christian Mother. She was one of the co-founders of the Avon Food Shelf. She enjoyed spending time gardening, fishing, canning, crocheting, embroidery, taking trips to the casino and pink roses. She was very involved in her catholic faith.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Bob) Kroska of Avon; granddaughter, Laura (Randy) Kluver of Osakis; and great grandsons, Dylan and Dalton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert in 2008, siblings, Tim, Herb, and infant brother, Joseph.

Monica A. Ahrens, age 86, of Melrose, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

Monica Ann Dickhaus was born September 20, 1934 in Melrose, Minnesota to Fred and Bertha (Herzog) Dickhaus. She was united in marriage to Ralph Ahrens on November 23, 1954 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

The couple owned and operated a farm three miles west of Melrose until their retirement in 1995. Monica enjoyed playing cards, Bingo, and dancing. She shared many dances with her favorite dance partner, George Zilliox. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Monica was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include her children, Allan (Leah) Ahrens of Sauk Centre, Mary (Roger) Frieler of Yankton, SD, Henry (Jan) Ahrens of Melrose, Philip (Rebecca) Ahrens of Paynesville, Jeff (Wanda) Ahrens of Greenwald, and Michele Winter of Rockville; 21 grandchildren, 38 greatgrandchildren with one on the way; sisters, Corrine Shay of Chesterton, Indiana and Karen (John) Callahan of Coon Rapids; and sistersin-law, Betty Dickhaus of Melrose and Rosie Dickhaus of Melrose.

Dear Leslee, When bad, unexpected things happen, like a job layoff or a blown car engine, you shouldn’t depend on credit cards. If you use debt to cover emergencies, you’re digging a financial hole for yourself. My plan will walk you out of debt forever, and a strong foundation of any financial house includes an emergency fund.

Putting together a fully funded emergency fund is Baby Step 3 of my plan for getting out of debt and gaining control of your money.

Before you reach this point, however, steps one and two should be completed first. Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000 for a starter emergency fund. Baby Step 2 is where you pay off all

A fully-funded emergency fund should cover three to six months of expenses. You start the emergency fund with $1,000, but a full emergency fund can range from $5,000 to $25,000 or more. A family that can make it on $3,000 per month might have a $10,000 emergency fund as a minimum.

What is an emergency? An emergency is something you had no way of knowing was coming—an event that has a major, negative financial impact if you can’t cover it. Emergencies include things like paying the deductible on medical, homeowners or car insurance after an accident, a job loss, a blown automobile transmission or your home’s heating and air unit suddenly biting the dust.

Something on sale you “need” is not an emergency. Fixing the boat, unless you live on it, is not an emergency. Want to buy a car, a leather couch or go to Cancun? Not emergencies. Prom dresses and college tuition are not emergencies, either.

Never rationalize the use of your emergency fund for something you should save for. On the other hand, don’t make payments on medical bills after an accident while your emergency fund sits there fully loaded. If you’ve gone to the trouble of creating an emergency fund, make sure you are crystal clear on what is and isn’t an emergency.

Also, keep your emergency fund in something that is liquid. Liquid is a money term that basically means easy to access with no penalties. I use growth-stock mutual funds for long-term investing, but I would never put my emergency fund there. I suggest a money market account with no penalties and full check writing privileges for your emergency fund.

Your emergency fund account is not for building wealth. It’s an insurance policy against rainy days!

Dear Motor Medics, I have been looking at trucks to be used as both primary transportation and for pulling a camper in the summer. I have a half ton gas powered truck now that is used for about 20,000 miles per year but after upgrading my camper to a larger size this past summer, I don’t feel it is safe to use as a pull truck any longer. I am a Ford guy and want to go with a diesel truck in a 3/4 or 1-ton model 4x4 but hear that most of the trucks in my price range are equipped with a 6.0 engine and that they have some inherent problems. What kind of things go wrong with the engine and what can be done to fix them? I may be willing to buy one and make the repairs.

-Darrin in White Plains, NY Dear Darrin, It is smart of you to think safety. You should never pull with a truck that is too small for the job or safety will be compromised.

The issues we see with the 6.0 are usually the egr cooler and the engine oil cooler. There are some strong aftermarket parts available to update the engine and once done we have seen greatly improved strength and no repeat failures so far. There are some great deals to be had on the 6.0 and if you find one budget for the upgrades to help prevent major future breakdowns.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, My car is dying. I have been told that it is unsafe to drive due to rust but on the outside, it looks fine. I have a 2000 Grand Prix and they have shown me major rust in the rocker panel area that is covered up by the plastic ground effects. The rocker is gone but it doesn’t seem to be supporting anything. I want to drive the car for a few more years but they tell me the rust has severely compromised the structural integrity and the main support structure is weakening so it will be very unsafe in a collision. Are there any repairs that I can make to help get it by for a couple years until I’m ready for a new car?

Burnhamville Township • July 27, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held July 27, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Sup. Muellner was absent.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of June 29, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters from City of Long Prairie concerning an unpaid fire bill. Upon discussion, the clerk will find out more information before paying this fire call.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6125 through 6134: Rev. $853.47; R& B $6,549.67. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor had to respray some roads for dust control. Flicker Road may need more gravel to make dust control work better; for now he bladed road to loosen up gravel to work better. Dry weather is an issue with the roads. He will continue on the road inspection list.

Weed inspections around the township are looking pretty good.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $85,261.30.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Johnson seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center. The Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting should be held Tuesday, August 24, 2021.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej and Jim Molitor. Also present: Doug & Elaine Mrozek, Jerry Koester, Bryan Allen, Dan Thieschafer, John Loxterkamp and reporter Tyler Ohmann.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, July 6, 2021 was reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Norm Carlson and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Allen was present to confirm with the council he will no longer pursue the campground idea on his property to the east of 4th Street in Swanville as he presented in July.

Allen presented to the council he would like to divide his property into 4 or 5 lots for houses to be built on. He would like to have city water piped into each of the lots. City sewer would not be needed as individual septic systems would be installed in each of the lots. Allen would like to visit with the city engineer, at his cost, to see if city water would be a possibility. Mayor Lange stated the city water system can handle the extra hookups to the lots but is unsure what kind of water pressure there would be. The cost for the water outside of the city limits would be higher than what residents pay. Council was in favor of Allen talking with the City Engineer. Property owners in Swanville Township, neighboring Allen’s land, were present to speak concerns on the development also. Morrison County Planning & Zoning has the criteria of what needs to be met for the lots.

City Code Article 1: Administration, was handed out to council to look over and give comments for the next council meeting. The City Vision, Mission, Values and Goals plan was also handed out to council members and asked to look over for the next council meeting as well.

Discussion on the city purchasing “slum houses” that come up for sale were discussed. The city would purchase the lot, demolish the house and then put the empty lot up for sale for a new house to be built. Mayor Lange will visit with the city attorney on this item.

The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) was discussed. The Clerk will put in an application for this money.

After the money is applied for, half will be received within the month and the other half will be received next year.

Crash: September 13, 2021: At at approximately 10:53 a.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call of a single-vehicle rollover crash on 300th Street, east of County Road 41 in Farming Township. This location is approximately three miles south of the city of Albany.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the sole occupant and driver, Brayden Roerick, 16, of Albany, had been traveling west on 300th Street in Farming Township in a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck proceeded into the ditch where it rolled several times before coming to a rest in a soybean field. Roerick was able to call for help and was treated at the scene and released. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded, as well as Albany Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance.

Grey Eagle Library Celebrates 31st Anniversary Come and celebrate the 31st Anniversary of the Grey Eagle Community Library on Friday, September 24 from 1 p.m. to 6 pm and Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Robert Kutter, author of the book ‘The History Of Grey Eagle’ (commissioned by the board) will be present to sign books and discuss Grey Eagle history. A donation to the GELA is suggested for the book. Proceeds from the book helps to keep the library operating.

The Grey Eagle Community Library was created 31 years ago by community members who saw a need for a library in Grey Eagle. At that time Great River Regional Library was not ready to commit to the idea so, with financial help from the Grey Eagle Lions and the City of Grey Eagle, they proceeded to get a building on main street. The Lions and other community members scraped, painted, cleaned and built shelves to get the library operating. Books were donated and volunteers staffed the library. On October 2, 1990 the Library opened.

Two years later Great River Regional Library came on board to help the library with staffing and books.

Shooting: September 12, 2021: At 3:29 a.m., received a report of gun shots in the 500 block of 2nd Ave SE in the city of Long Prairie. Upon arrival, law enforcement located a deceased male victim in the yard of the residence. Another male victim was transported by CentraCare Ambulance to the Long Prairie Hospital and was later airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital. A third victim, later arrived at the Long Prairie Hospital and was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital. The deceased was transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for a positive identification and autopsy. The Long Prairie Police Department is being assisted in the investigation by the Todd County Sheriff's Office and the MN BCA. The Long Prairie Police will release updates when available.

Trees on the city boulevard were discussed. Trees that are dead or need to be trimmed will be removed at the city’s expense. Property owners are expected to cut the grass on the boulevard and shovel the snow on the sidewalk adjacent to their property.

The city attorney contract agreement with Quinlivan and Hughes, formally Brown, Krueger & Vancura from Long Prairie, was discussed. Fees will be $150.00 an hour for 2021-22 and $175.00 an hour in 2023. Tony Maciej made a motion to sign the city attorney agreement. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. motion carried.

The Annual Swanville Rural Fire Association meeting will be held Tuesday, August 24, 8:00 p.m.
