The magnitude of attitude -By Harvey Mackay “I am seldom considered, though I do more to influence everything about you than virtually any one thing in your life. I often control the time you get up in the morning, the time you go to sleep, what you eat and drink and the very thought that runs through your head.

I can make you either happy or sad, loving or hateful, cheerful or remorseful, congenial or spiteful and in doing so, control the very capacity that you have for success.

“No, you don't often think of me; instead you BLAME the problem I create on the shortcoming of others, or the state of the economy, or your family or a million other reasons.

“When my impact on your life is fully considered in your every thought and action, when you are mindful of my awesome power, when you nurture and groom me for positive use in your life, I can become more contagious than the most prolific disease ever witnessed by man. My influence will spread to every person you come in contact with.

“Groomed and nurtured in a positive manner there will be no person or obstacle that can stand in the way of my success or fail to be impacted for the better.

“I AM YOUR ATTITUDE.” This wisdom from an unknown author is perfect as we recognize Positive Attitude Month in October. A positive attitude is one of the best traits you can carry with you, because it makes any difficult or frustrating situation a lot easier to deal with.

Researchers believe people who embrace

a positive outlook have less stress, an increased sense of well-being, better coping skills, greater success and longer life spans.

Do whatever you must, but always look on the bright side.

Harvard psychologist William James, who taught more than a century ago, said: “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.”

Author Glenn Van Ekeren lists six attitude axioms: 1. Attitude affects quality of life. A positive attitude won’t let you do anything, but it will help you do everything better than a negative attitude. Our attitude is the way we see events, people and circumstances in life.

2. Attitude is a choice. Circumstances are uncontrollable. Life’s events happen. Our responsibility is to choose our responses – our attitude. Situations may color your view of life, but you have been given the power to choose what the color will be.

3. Attitudes alter abilities. People who believe they can’t do something are usually right, and so are those who believe they can.

Our attitude toward a task will trigger the body’s ability to respond to it. My good friend, college football Hall-of-Fame coach Lou Holtz frequently speaks on the correlation between ability and attitude. Lou says: “Ability is what you are capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

4. People with a positive attitude anticipate adversity. Optimistic people do not have their heads in the clouds believing nothing will go wrong because they have a positive attitude.

Positive people know challenging events, adversity and tough situations are inevitable.

5. Attitude affirms success and failure.

Positive people keep success and failure in perspective. These people tend to remove the word failure from their vocabulary and use

words like experience, results, challenge, temporary setback and unsuccessful attempt.

6. Actions alter attitudes. Making the magnitude of attitude work for you begins with acting in a manner consistent with the mental state you desire. You are who and what you are today because of the attitudes you choose.

Our attitude toward the world around us depends upon what we are ourselves. If we are selfish, we will be suspicious of others. If we are of a generous nature, we will be likely to be more trustful. If we are quite honest with ourselves, we won’t always be anticipating deceit in others. If we are inclined to be fair, we won’t feel that we are being cheated. Of course, it’s important to be on the lookout for scammers.

In a sense, looking at the people around you is like looking in a mirror. You see a reflection of yourself. Pay attention to that reflection. If the image is less than sparkling, it’s time for a change. You don’t need a new mirror. You need an attitude adjustment to help you see the brighter side of life.

Mackay’s Moral: There are no negatives to a positive attitude.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Ray and John Potato Picking

In 1934 there just wasn't any work to be found in this local area. The two boys, now almost 20 years old, decided that other areas offered better opportunities for work. It was decided that there must be a need for help picking potatoes in North Dakota. They took along a loaf of bread and a jar of strawberry jelly. They each had 50¢ in their pockets and they began their adventure.

They climbed into a box-car in Swanville, along with six other occupants and headed for their destination. When they reached Morris, they had to get on another box-car, since the one they were on was heading west and they wanted to go north. The new train had about 100 other “bums” on it. Most of the other passengers were not actually looking toward any special destination, they were just riding along. The train offered a chance for companionship with others who were in the same desperate condition. The box-car also offered some protection from weather along with a changing scenery.

The train kept moving north until it came to the Canadian border. It then stopped and all of the passengers were required to get off to avoid the border inspectors. The next couple nights were spent in a chilly, open railyard. The next night was more comfortable,

since a rail-road worker unlocked a box-car loaded half full with potatoes. Sleeping on the potatoes wasn't actually comfortable, but it was much warmer than being outside.

The next part of their journey included climbing into another box-car that was going south. They were so tired that they slept all the way to the next stop, which was Morris.

They then spent the next two nights sleeping in a hay pile. No work was available there and they didn't want to continue begging for food at the near-by houses, so they decided to return home.

Still having the 50¢ in their pockets, they purchased tickets on the “Galloping Goose” train car and returned to Swanville. They hadn't picked any potatoes, but their travel experience made home seem much more attractive.

Dry weather drastically reduced cattle forage in the area, so they took the team of horses and a hay wagon out into a large swamp to scythe and load meadow hay. This was used both by their father's cows, but was an item to sell or trade.

The weather was extremely hot and their water needs while cutting the hay were kept cool in an ingenious way. A two quart jar was filled with water at home and when they got out on the swamp, they made a hole in the bog and stored the jar in it. This kept their water cool.

The next couple of years were spent doing odd jobs in the area. They still kept looking for more permanent work and in 1937 they made some important life decisions.

I have been preaching through Galatians. Last week we looked at Galatians 3:1-5 but verse one is very direct. Paul made three missionary trips to Galatia, and many came to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. He taught that we come to Jesus on our faith alone, the Law points us to our sin, but it does not bring us salvation. After his missionary journeys Paul was informed that some Jews went to the churches in Galatia and gave them another message. They basically said, Yes you come to Jesus by faith, but you must also be circumcised (a Jewish law).

Paul then says in Galatians 3:1 “You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.” The Galatians had the Truth, they accepted the Truth but now they

Patricia M. Bromenshenkel

Patricia M. “Pat” Bromenshenkel, age 74 of Sauk Centre, passed away from a tragic automobile accident on Monday, October 4, 2021.

Her children will honor her life in a private memorial mass with inurnment in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Elrosa. Family and friends are invited to an informal celebration of her life to be held at the Sinclair Lewis Park on Saturday, October 30 from 1-3 pm.

Patricia Mary Wiechmann was born on March 12, 1947 to Robert and Dolores (Herzog) Wiechmann and was raised on a dairy farm in Elrosa. She graduated from Belgrade High School in 1965. She then worked at the Sauk Centre Creamery, owned a home daycare business, and more. Most notably, for more than 20 years she was a manager of a local agency, currently called WACOSA. She was passionate about helping individuals with disabilities find opportunities to work and live in Sauk Centre and surrounding communities.

Patricia was an active member of the community throughout the years. She was the President of the local Dollars for Scholars Organization and the President of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society for multiple years. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. Paul’s Church and sang in the church choir.

Patricia is survived by her six children and their families, Eric Bromenshenkel (Courtney Vail), Sonja (David) Goerdt, Tara (Brett) Oberg, Amber (David) Cziok, Lindsey (Andy) Bronczyk, and Dana (Jeff) Hellman. She is also survived by her siblings Darlene (Daryl) Rachey, Marc (Audrey) Wiechmann, Anita (Jerry) Vearrier, and Pamela Wiechmann. Patricia always put family first. Her love and devotion were an inspiration to her family.

In retirement, she spent as much time as possible with her children and grandchildren; Raegin, Pragya, Eric, Catherine, Bennett, Ayden, Ellery, Leyton, Matthew, Lauren, Greta, Elise, Ellana, Madelynn, and Penelope. She took the time to know each of her grandchildren and encourage them in all that they did. Her memory and love will live on with all of them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joe, and infant sister Marilyn.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Anna M. DeFoe

Anna M. DeFoe, age 84 of Grey Eagle, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at the Little Falls Care Center in Little Falls, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, October 19 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Jacob Holck officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Anna Marie Showalter was born May 27, 1937 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Mearl and Swea (Larson) Showalter. She was united in marriage to Dale Montzka on September 17, 1955 at the United Methodist Church parsonage. The couple started their family and lived in Grey Eagle. Dale passed away in November of 1973 leaving behind Anna and their six children. On August 23, 1977 Anna married Jack DeFoe at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie. After marriage, the couple resided lived in Long Prairie and later resided in the Burtrum/Swanville area.

She was a member of Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle. Anna enjoyed reading, working puzzles, cross stitching, working on the computer, and going to the casino.

Survivors include her children, Ray (Wendy Mull) Montzka of Crosby, John (Karen) Montzka of Alexandria, Janice (Wayne) Rahn of Burtrum, Larry (Trina) Montzka of Gilbert, Bruce (Mickey) Montzka of Fort Ripley, Ann (Neil) Davis of Alexandria, and Amy (Marv) Lemke of Swanville; step children, Dave (Regina) DeFoe, Rick (Trish) DeFoe, Ann DeFoe, Connie (Dennis) Holtz, Pat DeFoe, Teri (Dick) Stepanick, Rita (Sears) Warren, Bill (Shelly) DeFoe, Alice (Mike) Mueller, Joe (Anne) DeFoe, Mary (Gary) Herigon, Lois (Mike) Ness, John (Shari) DeFoe, Tony DeFoe, and Becky (Jim) Fisher; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brother, Bob Showalter of Grey Eagle.

Anna was preceded in death by her husbands, Dale Montzka in 1973 and Jack DeFoe in 1999; and brother, Vernon Showalter.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.

Ross S. Norgren

Ross S. Norgren, 68 year old resident of Long Prairie, MN passed away Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at CentraCare Health in Long Prairie, MN. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN with a remembrance service at 7:00 P.M. Caring for Ross and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Ross was born on January 29, 1953 in Duluth, MN to the late Donald and Beverly (Prevost) Norgren. He grew up in Little Falls, MN where he graduated from Little Falls Community High School with the Class of 1971.

After graduation Ross worked various jobs out west and later returned to Little Falls, MN. When he returned to Little Falls, he began working for Morrison County Public Works as a Senior Engineering Technician. Ross was a dedicated employee for the county for many years until retiring in 2015 after 28 years of service. He was united in marriage to Nadine Schmiesing in 1996 at the Lake Beauty Bible Camp on Lake Beauty.

Ross and Nadine made their home for many years on Lake Beauty living the Minnesota Lake Life. Ross had many hobbies and interests that he enjoyed. He was an avid music lover as well as an outdoorsman that loved hunting and fishing.

He also enjoyed gardening and was a very talented craftsman and carpenter. His greatest joy in life was his daughter, Angela and granddaughter, Samantha.

Ross was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Ross is survived by his daughter, Angela (Terre Martin) Norgren-Caruth of Rice, MN; granddaughter, Samantha Caruth; brother, Mark (Cathy) Norgren of Little Falls, MN; niece and nephews, Reed (Alyssa) Seifert, Lauren Seifert and Oscar Norgren, and many cousins and close friends.

Ross was preceded in death by wife, Nadine Norgren; parents, Donald and Beverly Norgren; sister, Deanne Seifert and brother-in-law, Mark Seifert.

Michelle A. Poepping, age 36 of Avon, formerly of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at her home in Avon, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 23 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Arnold Allison officiating.

Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m.

Michelle Ann Poepping was born on February 24, 1985 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Ronald and Julie (Pederson) Poepping. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 2003 and furthered her education at Rasmussen College, earning her degree in the Medical Assistant program. Michelle worked at the St. Cloud Eye Clinic for a number of years. She enjoyed fishing, taking in the beauty of the lake and nature. Michelle truly loved spending time with her children.

Survivors include her children, Morgan Poepping and Riley Brown; parents, Ron (Diann) Poepping of Hutchinson and Julie Lieser of Sauk Centre; sister, Dawn Poepping (Jordan Adams) of Sauk Centre; stepbrothers and stepsister, Chace (Kristi) Jensen of Dexter, Michigan, Josh (Ivy) Harrison of New Ulm, and Charity (Adam) Laidlaw of Willmar; and many loving relatives and friends.

Michelle was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Ralph Poepping and Paul Pederson; and step grandfather, Tom Sharp.

I’ll be leaving the military soon, and I’ve been evaluating my living situation once I am out. My parents said I could live with them for a while, but I am not sure that would work out well. I have done some research on renting versus buying a home, but I understand that you hate VA loans. Can you clarify as to why you feel this way and give some advice for a person in my situation?

-Tyler Dear Tyler, Hate might be a strong word for how I feel about VA loans, but there are some things you should know about them. Number one, VA loans are usually more expensive, with the interest rate and all the fees, than FHA or conventional loans. Number two, the reason most people gravitate toward a VA loan is they can get a house with no money down. But if you’re trying to buy a house with no money down, it means you’re too broke to buy a house!

no money in the bank, that house is going to be a curse instead of a blessing. What happens if you buy a home this way, and the air conditioner goes out next week? What happens if your car needs a new transmission next month? Most people who find themselves in situations like this start piling on debt to fix things, and that’s not a wise answer.

VA loans and other “no down payment” mortgage loans allow you to buy a home from a position of financial weakness rather than a position of financial strength. Don’t get me wrong, I want you to own a home someday.

I just don’t want the home—and a bunch of other debt stacked on top—to own you.

My advice is to rent a decent, affordable place for a while and concentrate on getting your new life and career off the ground while saving some money. You might even consider a roommate situation for a while to help cut costs. But you don’t need to be buying a home right now.

Dear Motor Medics, My vehicles heater has been losing its ability to heat gradually over the past few years and it has reached the point of almost no heat and my wife says it’s time to get it fixed or else. She’s steamed and I’m freezing. I had it flushed a couple times and it seemed to work better for a short time but when I had it done this year it made no difference. The vehicle is a 2001 Dodge Caravan. Can you help me cool down my wife and heat up the van?

- Terry in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Terry, Your problem is most common when the cooling system has not been flushed according to scheduled service times, but if it has been they may have not serviced the core. When we flush a cooling system we flush everything, not just the radiator. We remove the hoses to the core and rinse them with clean water and then connect our machine and completely flush the system. We also use a cleaner in the system before we flush it. These simple things can mean the difference between a heater core that goes the distance or one that fails prematurely.

If you core has become so clogged that it can’t be flushed enough to give proper heat then it will need to be replaced. Replacement can be very expensive so if it is determined that a new core is needed check around for prices.

I had my vehicle in for an engine replacement and it took a week longer than promised and after five days it developed an oil leak. I have a warranty and they did reimburse me for some rental car charges but have not gone back for repairs because I’m so frustrated with the problems.

My wife says I should have them fix it since we paid the money. Then go elsewhere. What should we do?

- Darrel in Arlington, Texas Dear Darrel, I don’t know what business you’re in, but it must be one where there are never any problems, or your customers just don’t care about them. I can tell you that any business has a main objective of keeping happy customers. We don’t always hit our mark even in our own shop, but we try, and we make it right no matter what. Often a major job has unforeseen parts needs that can take an extra week or more. It’s just unavoidable in rare cases. They did reimburse you for rental charges and that was not required. As for the leak I’m sure they don’t like it any more than you and it was not

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Upsala Senior Living Owners Tim & Amy Jo Matros. Tim & Amy Jo Matros gave the Council a progress update on the Upsala Senior Living. The goal is break ground in November and to be open by September of 2022.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Brian Lange informed the Council about the Raffle and Cornhole Tourney.

Bill Koopmeiners explained that the Department received a FEMA grant to purchase Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses. He was directed to meet with the Fireboard entities to ask for approximately $27,000 to complete their SCBA needs.

First Response Team: Douvier updated the Council on the First Response Team calls. The October 3 Open House to kick off Fire Prevention Week was a huge success.

Maintenance Report: Tschida handed in his report on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the city.

Thein Well did their annual inspection; they recommend servicing Well #4 due to the reduction in capacity. They gave a quote of $7,775.00; if the motor is replaced at the same time, it would be an addition $1,800.00.

County Commissioner Greg Blaine shared his intentions on how to spend the County’s ARPA dollars.

The Main Lift Station pump is not expected to continue its life expectancy for very long. The cost for a new pump is approximately $11,000.00. Benson moved to approve the Public Works department to purchase a new pump when the current pump no longer functions, 2nd by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

The two water plant well meters will not display information correctly. The cost for new meter heads is $780.00 apiece.

The tentative schedule for hydrant flushing is Monday, October 18 starting at 9:00 am.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the calendar and updated the Council on the month’s events and reminded the Council of the school referendum that will be held at City Hall November 2.

Planning & Zoning Commission: The Planning & Zoning Commission did not meet last month.

Unfinished Business: LMC Fall Forum: The Regional Fall Forum has been cancelled.

Business Trick-Or-Treat: Stevens shared the flyer that will be going to the local businesses for the First Annual Business Trick-Or-Treat afternoon in Upsala.

New Business: Designate New Poling Place Brian Lange moved to approved Resolution 104-21-1 to designate the new city hall location at the rec building, 320 Walnut Avenue, Upsala, MN as the polling place for 2022, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Bid Approval for the Walnut Ave Extension: Three Requests for Proposal were sent out to get bids on extending Walnut Avenue past the townhomes down to the lift station. Only one bid came in and that was Moore Engineering at $22,700.00. Benson moved to approve the Moore Engineering Bid at $22,700.00 to extend Walnut Avenue down to the lift station, 2nd

by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Quit Claim Deed for 131 N Main: Lange Oil owns a small knockout portion of Phil Johnson’s acreage; as time progressed the area that Lange Oil used was larger than the land they owned. Phil Johnson and Lange Oil are requesting a Quit Claim Deed to extend the area around the original small piece of land. Benson moved to approve the Quit Claim Deed for Parcel “A” on the property known as PID 47.0027.000 resolving the property infringement issue, 2nd by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Quit Claim Deed for the City of Upsala and Jeremy Carlson: The City of Upsala owns a triangle piece of land that lays between the Jeremy Carlson property (known as PID 47.0601000) and 1st Avenue West. A Quit Claim to transfer the property to him since it was assumed he owned it all along would solve the issue.

Brian Lange moved to approve a Quit Claim Deed to give Jeremy Carlson the triangle piece of property, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Transfer of Funds: Benson moved to transfer $8,375.93 from the general fund to the Fire Fund, $3,694.16 from the general fund to the First Response Fund, and $22,750.00 from the general fund to the Walnut Ave Fund, 2nd by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Acknowledgements: The Firemen’s Raffle Team gave a beautiful presentation at Bullfrogs honoring the veterans and the September 11 fallen heroes.

Mike and Melissa Tschida worked until after midnight Friday night finishing the women’s bathroom at the Rec Building so the party on Saturday afternoon would be successful.

Financials: Benson moved to approve the bills as presented, 2nd by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Breanna Becker, Grey Eagle First, I would like to thank Sherry Kutter for acknowledging that a baby is a human being even before it is born. When she said that a woman “may know that she doesn’t have the emotional, financial or moral support to raise a healthy, happy child”, she confirmed that abortion kills happy, healthy children.

But I would like to ask you to think about this…if a woman, like Mrs. Kutter mentioned, had a two year old happy, healthy child and decided she wanted to be a doctor or some other profession, is it OK for her to get “rid of” that child so she may further her career? A person is a person, whether in the womb, age 5, 25 or 105 for “God formed my inmost being; You knit me in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13 How can we as mere human beings think we have the right and power to take life away from someone if it interferes with our lives and/or plans. There are many people and organizations available to help mothers in difficult situations, for example Options for Women in Sauk Centre, Prenatal Partners in Life, Pro Life Action Ministries, the Sisters of Life, and so on.

These organizations help mothers through pregnancies and beyond and if raising a child is NOT an option, these organizations also help mothers find the resources they need to give LIFE to their babies. Abortion not only kills a small child, but it hurts so deeply the mothers and fathers who have abortions, there is healing and hope and resources available for those who have had abortions.

One of your concerns about the Texas ban was that abortions will not stop. “They will continue but will be illegal and unsafe for the mother and child”. Could you please explain to me how a legal abortion would ever be SAFE for the child.

In choosing LIFE, mothers and fathers give life to the next generation of doctors, lawyers, farmers, neighbors and friends. So the Texas ban on Abortion is a great step towards healing our broken nation and hopefully other states will follow their example. The United States of America was founded on three basic rights. The right to LIFE, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If these rights are taken away from us we are no longer a free country and a nation that follows God’s laws.

I, too, will pray for my neighbors to respect the right to life of all human beings.

Arlene Brinkmann After reading the last week’s letter to the editor, I pondered on what happened to the adults.

If a single mother doesn’t have enough money to support another child what is she doing having sex and committing adultery? Where are the fathers of these children? In the book of Genesis God told Adam because you have eaten of this fruit by the sweat of your brow you will feed your family.

Where are the parents? Why are you not teaching your sons if you have sex outside of marriage and get a gal pregnant you are responsible for the well being of the child it’s half yours. What makes a woman’s life more important than the child’s?

Don’t babies have a right to life? You did! When are people going to take responsibility for their own actions?

One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is self control. Having sex outside of marriage is breaking one of the Ten Commandments! God knew you before he formed you in your mother’s womb. It’s in the Bible look it up yourself! It all boils down to which master do you serve.
