The clerk reluctantly let her in, and she headed to the produce section where she spent several minutes inspecting several heads of lettuce. She said, “Actually I only need a half head of lettuce.”

The clerk said, “I’ll have to check it out with my manager.” He went into his office and announced, “You won’t believe this but some idiotic, cranky old woman wants half a head of lettuce.” Just as he finished talking, he noticed the woman standing behind him, so he turned back to his manager and said, “Fortunately this fine woman will take the other half.”

This young man knew the importance of good human relations in order to get positive results. By sparing the woman’s feelings, he knew she would be back again as a customer.

You can fail at almost anything and you will get another chance. But if you mess up even a little bit on human relations – people skills – you’re usually done.

A Carnegie Foundation study once showed that only 15 percent of a businessperson’s success could be attributed to job knowledge and technical skills. It showed that 85 percent of one’s success would be determined by what they called “ability to deal with people” and “attitude.”

In an essay that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs penned shortly before his untimely death he

wrote: “There is a big difference between being a human being and being human. Only a few people really understand this.”

Being human means different things to different people. For some it might be to show strength, to others vulnerability. For me it’s being morally responsible, kind, friendly, doing the right thing, admitting to and learning from mistakes, and most importantly, being compassionate and kind.

These past months seem to have put a new emphasis on how we treat others. For months when we couldn’t get together or go to work in person, we checked on neighbors and friends.

Keeping in touch took on a new urgency. We missed the human interaction. Wouldn’t it be amazing if that spirit of humanity continued long into the future?

As life slowly returns to normal, we are figuring out how to respect each other’s ideas and concerns. This is certainly true as businesses reopen.

Where, you might ask, does being human fit in business? Being human and profitability are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, businesses that are perceived as people-oriented and good corporate citizens have a far better chance of succeeding than those that put profits ahead of people.

There are scientific studies that suggest there are physical benefits to practicing compassion.

People who practice compassion produce 100 percent more DHEA, which is a hormone that counteracts the aging process, and 23 percent less cortisol — the “stress hormone.”

The main benefit is that it helps us to be happier and thus make others happier.

Compassionate people are also more positive.

That’s why we should practice compassion every day of our lives.

There is plenty of evidence to suggest that mean people are not happier, or necessarily more successful. If you don’t believe me, spend a few minutes on Twitter or Facebook. The comments are too frequently cruel or so extreme, and they

breed even more ugliness. That’s the definition of “anti-social media.”

When used well, the internet provides so many opportunities for kindness. It is possible to offer constructive criticism that has a positive result. That would be a great TikTok challenge!

The list below from an unknown origin offers a great starting point.

The six most important words in the English language are: “I admit I made a mistake.”

The five most important words: “You did a great job.”

The four most important words: “What is your opinion?”

The three most important words: “If you please.”

The two most important words: “Thank you.”

The single most important word: “We.” The least most important word: “I.” Memorize these phrases and use them when you respond in person or online. Give others the benefit of the doubt whenever possible. That would be a tremendous contribution to a civil society.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne What's New

There was a time when an individual who wanted to communicate with another person, they needed to be within eyesight and in most cases close enough to hear the other person.

This method of communication limited the sharing of ideas to a very limited extent. For instance, if you were born of parents that were from a certain country, of a certain religious belief or of a certain moral character, your communication probably was very biased and you carried the biased beliefs into your thinking as an adult.

You didn't feel slighted by your views; it was, in your mind, the way the world thought and believed.

This restricted flow of ideas began to change when Americans began to travel greater distances from their home. They were somewhat fascinated by how the other person viewed life. However there were new inventions to help open our minds to new ideas.

The telephone and radio helped to add dimension to our thinking, probably around the 1920's. Motion picture shows, first offering only visual presentations and later offering

visual and sound were a really big thing. There were, in many cases, no theaters, as we see them today. Movies were shown wherever there was enough space for people to gather.

They were sometimes viewed in open park settings, with a few chairs gathered in front of a white sheet which served as a movie screen.

Those that didn't get a chair stood for the show. But it was an exciting addition to our social life. I think it was so popular because it allowed the viewer to transport themselves to a different and in many cases a more exciting situation. Many churches that already had the space available, did not allow movies because somehow they seemed sinful.

Television became popular in the 1950's.

It brought entertainment and news into our living rooms. It was very convenient, but didn't offer the entertainment value away from home, which was what many of the younger people wanted. The typical spot for a date was to go to the movie, followed by a stop at the malt shop.

The entertainment offered by television today frequently offers an option to watch thousands of movies at home. I don't know if dating today involves sitting at home watching TV. The telephone changed from a party line from a wooden box on the wall to a little hand tool that allows the user to access the internet, communicate with friends, sell unwanted belongings and consume many waking hours of our lives. It sometimes seems to be the owners best friend and in some cases taking priority over their own family.

Robert G. Luetmer

Robert Gerard Luetmer (60) of Big Lake passed away Tuesday, September 28 surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life was held at Becker City Park Pavilion on Monday, October 4th, 2021.

Bob was born January 10, 1961, to Aloysius “Al” and Maureen (Heinen) Luetmer in Sauk Centre, MN. Bob was raised on a dairy farm in Meire Grove, MN, along with his 7 siblings whom he loved dearly. He graduated from Melrose High School and went on to the U of M in Minneapolis, where he studied journalism. Bob worked various jobs in the cities and met Amy through mutual friends. Bob married Amy Spriggs on February 14, 1993, in a private ceremony at their home in Zimmerman. Together they built their family of 5 children, Nicholas, Anthony, Vincent, Franklin, and Isabella. Bob’s two passions were his family and his music. If he was not immersed in a board game or watching a movie with his wife and kids, you could find him strumming a guitar or noodling on the piano. He was a member of different rock and roll bands, playing covers and his own original songs.

Bob was very handy and enjoyed the challenge of a new project. He built a beautiful Finnish sauna in the back yard to enjoy with the family. He was an accomplished athlete and loved playing basketball as well as running marathons. Bob was always a huge film enthusiast and would watch his favorite, Jaws, any time it was on TV (and you would, too, if you happened to be in the room with him!) He was also a Stephen King fan and had read nearly all of his novels.

Bob is survived by his wife, Amy, of Big Lake; Children, Nicholas (Marie) of Park Rapids, Anthony of Big Lake, Vincent of Maple Grove, Franklin of Brainerd, and Isabella of Big Lake; Parents Aloysius and Maureen of Melrose; Siblings, Rose Pawlenty of Monticello, Marty (Linda) of Belle Plaine, Tony (Sheri) of Meire Grove, Pat of San Diego, and Lois of Los Angeles as well as many nieces and nephews.

He will also be missed by his many close friends and his dogs and companions Roxy and Reggie.

Bob was preceded in death by his sister Mary Monroe, brother Theodore Luetmer and brother-inlaw, Steve Pawlenty.

Edna M. Polipnick, age 87 of Sauk Centre, passed away from complications of dementia on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 surrounded by her family at Fairway Pines in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial as held Wednesday, October 13 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Todd Schneider officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Edna Mae Schurman was born June 7, 1934 in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Edward and Loretta (Schwartz) Schurman. On October 1, 1955, she was united in marriage to her best friend and love of her life, Robert “Bob” Polipnick. Edna was a homemaker all her life, raising their four children. She loved playing bridge, golf, entertaining, shopping, and eating sweets. She could be found on a bleacher or on the sideline at every sporting event, band/ choir concert, play and dance recital that her kids, grandkids, and most recently her greatgrandchildren participated in. She was also known as “balloon grandma” to her great-grandchildren.

Her life was a living example of her faith in God. She was instrumental in starting the St. Faustina Adoration Chapel where up until a couple of years ago she spent time daily in front of our Lord in the Chapel.

Edna was a wonderful cook and baker. The cookie jar was always full of her homemade chocolate chip cookies. Her famous brownies may die with her as none of her family has yet to get the recipe right. She was a lifetime homemaker who took pride in her home and her appearance.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Polipnick; children, Mary (Dan) Borgmann, Mickey (Bruce) Welle, Marcia (Lee) Riedel, and Rob (Sue) Polipnick; grandchildren, Tim (Janelle) Borgmann, Matt (Lindsay) Borgmann, Katie (Cory) Nathe, Annie (Charlie) Korenchen, Chrissy (Kris) Hokanson, Becky (Paul) Winters, Beth (Ira) Bradford, Lindsay (Nick) Cox, Jordan Welle, BJ Welle, Andy Riedel, Jenny (Ben) Roloff, Courtney (Curtis) Krump, Robby (Ashley) Polipnick, and Stephy Polipnick; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Mason, Isaac, Peyton, Nora, Isaiah, Carter, Boston, Max, Liam, Raya, James, Brynn, Easton, Holly, Sawyer, Mila, Millie, Hudson, Quinn, Maisey, Neil, Grayson, Jack, Brooks, Parker Krump, and baby Polipnick due in 2022; brothers, Ed Schurman and Bill (Dee) Schurman; sisters-inlaw, Florence Schurman, Juleen “Lee” Johnston, Mary Ann Polipnick, and Laura (Bill) Pohl.

Edna was preceded in death by her brother, Virgil “Bud” Schurman; and sisters, Valeria “Larrie” Polipnick, Germayne “Jerry” Simmer, DeLoris Trombley and Bette Hennessey.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Family School in Sauk Centre and St. Faustina Adoration Chapel C/O St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Robert O. “Bob” Willey, age 94 of Melrose formerly of Burtrum, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A gathering with family and friends will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, located at 30422 County Road 2, 2-½ miles South of Grey Eagle.

Jeanette K. Orth, age 88 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, October 18 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m.

Sunday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Jeanette Katherine Orth was born August 30, 1933 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Herman and Elizabeth (Winters) Kemper. On August 7, 1956 she married Donald Orth at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the couple farmed in Sauk Centre Township for 17 years. Jeanette worked at First State Bank in Sauk Centre for a number of years and then at Elrosa State Bank until her retirement.

She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Christian Mothers.

Jeanette enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Maureen Laube of Foley, son, Joel (Brenda) Orth of Avon; grandsons, Shaun Beilke of Sauk Centre and Donald "DJ" Orth (fiancé, Jen Hommerding) of Avon; and great-grandson, Keagan Mikel of Sauk Centre.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Orth on June 10, 2012; parents; sisters, Eileen Jennissen and Sister Marian Kemper; and son-in-law, Scott Laube.

Memorials are preferred.

Patricia A. “Patty” Klassen, age 64 of Melrose, died peacefully on Monday, September 27, 2021 at Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 18 at Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre. Lunch will follow at the American Legion in Melrose.

Patricia Ann Bosshardt was born November 20, 1956, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Harold and Betty (Butenhoff) Bosshardt. She was baptized on April 14, 1957, at First Methodist Church in Sauk Centre. Patty was raised with her brothers on the Bosshardt family farm in Sauk Centre Township.

She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1976. Patty was united in marriage to Harold Klassen on June 23, 1979, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond, Minnesota.

Together they raised two beautiful children in Melrose. In 2017, Patty moved into Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich for better care for her extensive health needs. There Patty was welcomed as part of the caring and loving Tree of Life Family. Harold and the kids would visit daily.

She loved her visits from family and friends.

Patty was an avid bowler. She bowled for many years on a league with her husband and parents. Patty loved anytime she spent with her family. She had a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by all.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Klassen of Melrose; two children, Kristine Klassen of Albany and Joseph (Jennie Stai) Klassen of Albany; three grandchildren, Jordan (Alexis Schindele) Klassen of St. Augusta, Peyton Klassen of Albany, and Sabrina “Nina” Klassen of Albany; brothers, Gary (Natalie) Bosshardt of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Tom Bosshardt of Sauk Centre, Jim (Maricel) Bosshardt of Sauk Centre, and Dale (Nancy)Bosshardt of Melrose; sister-in-law, Deloris Bosshardt of Tacoma, Washington; several nieces and nephews; one great nephew; and her Tree of Life Family.

Roger A. Hoffman, age 82, of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, October 15 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Family would appreciate those going through the receiving line to please wear a mask.

Roger August Hoffman was born on November 6, 1938, in New Munich to Harry and Helen (Schulte) Hoffman. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1956. He then served in the United State Air Force from 1956 to 1960, honorably discharged as First Class Sergeant. On June 23, 1962, he married Teresa Vos. Roger worked as a butcher most of his life. After retirement, he worked part-time at the Sauk River Watershed District. Roger enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, playing cards, puzzles, playing bean bags, gardening, bird watching, and camping with his family.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and the Melrose Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Hoffman of Sauk Centre; children, David (Judy) Hoffman of Sauk Centre, Douglas Hoffman (special friend, Diana) of Brownton, Pamela (Greg) Petermeier of Sauk Centre, Patricia (Brad) Meyer of Sauk Centre, Debra (Joe) Moritz of Albany, and Kirstie (Vince) McClellan of Excelsior; 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and brother, Ted (Jo) Hoffman of Mesa, Arizona.

Grey Eagle-Burtrum Lions and Central Minnesota Credit Union collaborated on road ditch clean up on Highway 287 west of Grey Eagle. Submitted by Linda Gohman.

Theft: October 4, 2021: City of Freeport, the victim had left their motorhome, with a generator on the back, at a local shop for repair. Within 2 1⁄2 hours the generator had been swiped by thieves.

Fire: October 4, 2021: The fire was in a silo, one-half to two-thirds full of haylage, in the 17000 block of Co. Rd. 52. The silo had not been in use for about 5 years. Deputy Breth arrived on scene to find white smoke wafting from the top of the silo. The Holdingford Fire Department arrived on scene and began working to extinguish the fire.

Ultimately the silo was knocked down and the fire extinguished.

Crash: October 7, 2021: Responded to a two vehicle crash on County Road 10 at County Road 40. Sally Valentin, 81, of Richmond, was driving her 2009 Chevrolet HHR westbound on County Road 40 towards 310th Street. Christopher Kotzer, 46, of Albany, was driving his 2019 Dodge pickup southbound on County Road 10. The investigation revealed that Valentin did not stop at the stop sign for westbound traffic, entered the intersection, and was struck on the passenger side. The crash was witnessed by a vehicle that was following behind Valentin.

The Chevy truck ended up in the southwest corner of the intersec-

tion and rolled onto its roof. The Chevy HHR spun around, traveled south, and ended up in a field on the southeast side of the intersection. Due to the type of crash and potential for injuries, a Life Link helicopter was dispatched to the scene. The helicopter arrived and transported Valentin to the St. Cloud Hospital. Kotzer was also transported to the hospital via by Mayo Ambulance. The Albany Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Albany Fire Department also assisted at the crash.

Due to the serious nature of the crash and injuries, the scene was marked for possible accident reconstruction if needed.

HOMECOMING! As you may know, I live in Swanville. I went into the school last Wednesday to pick up kids for Release Time to find out that I missed pajama day. Most of the students and staff (not all but most) were wearing pajamas. Yes, the excitement of Homecoming. I was the Bible teacher/Chaplain at Sunshine Bible Academy in South Dakota and Homecoming at a small private school is something to remember. All the past students and their families come for the festivities.

So, there is another homecoming that is just as exciting and might I even say, more exciting. That is when a believer in Jesus Christ dies here on earth and gets to spend eternity with his Creator. Wow, what a day that is going to be, I can’t wait.

Paul says in Philippians 1:20-23 “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether Grey Eagle-Burtrum Lions Club funded new picnic by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is tables at the Lions Park and the resurfacing of the tennis gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn courts in Grey Eagle. between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far.”

I have done many funerals, most of whom I have not known. I did one funeral where the funeral director told me that I don’t need to read the Obituary. I said, “Why not, everyone has one, and it's in the paper.” So, I did read it…, but you need to understand something. Even though I have done many funerals, I have never said, they are in heaven, or they are in hell. That is not up to me, I cannot judge the heart. This guy's Obituary started like this… __ was raised to be a proper Catholic boy, unfortunately it didn’t take. Now, as a pastor, where do I go from there? The rest went on to explain that he had only 8 happy days in his life, 4 marriages and 4 divorces, and the last love of his life missed the bullet only because he passed away.

That woman was the wife of his brother who I buried only 2 months before.

I try on and review clothing, and I’m paid $30 for each clip that’s anywhere from 30 seconds to two minutes long. Right now, I have about 1,000 viewers. This requires me to buy items from several brands.

I usually return the items when I’m through filming, but I’m currently funding this with a credit card I only use for this project. I only pay the minimum each month until I get the refund, so at any given time there can be up to $4,000 on the card in rotation. I make about $86,000 at my normal job, so is this an okay way to fund my project and chalk it up as a business expense?

Basically, it sounds like you’re trying to put yourself in a position to be an influencer. And the way influencers get paid is by monetizing eyeballs. Obviously, YouTube and other platforms will pay you if you can get the eyeballs.

But 1,000 viewers really aren’t a lot these days.

You’re getting there, though, and I’m glad you’re working at it and trying to make things happen.

You make good money, Amber. I want you to set aside $2,000 or $3,000 for this business, maybe out of the business income, and prime the pump one time. By that, I mean open a separate checking account that’s for your clothing exchange process only. Here’s the thing, let’s say you bought $1,000 worth of stuff from one of these companies, and they suddenly decide they’re not taking it back. You just ate that $1,000. And guess what else? Now, you really have credit card debt.

There are three things you can always be sure of in business. One, it’s going to cost twice as much as you think it will. Two, it’s going to take twice as long as you think it will. And three, you are not the exception to these things. While we’re at it, add this to the list of stuff you can always be sure of—you’ll never find me advising or endorsing credit card debt!

Dear Motor Medics, On occasion my 2006 Chevy Colorado vehicle won’t turn over.

When I turn the key, there is no sound and all the lights on the dash stay bright. I have found one thing that is different when this happens and that is a symbol of a padlock on the dash that flashes when the key is on. When the vehicle cranks normally the light comes on then goes off right away. I have had it in for service several times with no luck as they can’t duplicate the problem. They have told me that the symbol is for the anti-theft pass lock system and that it can’t be the problem because it shuts off fuel to prevent theft and does not control the starter. They think it may be the starter and want to replace it but at a cost of over $500.00 I want a second opinion and value yours.

We don’t want to criticize others repair knowledge since we make our own mistakes but… If they were to look under GMs description and operation of the pass lock system in the manual they would see clearly that the theft system does control the starter. We see this issue often and almost always it is a problem with the lock cylinder sensor. This would be a good area to investigate before changing a starter.

What should I do to help my vehicle?

- Carson in Mora, MN Dear Carson, What you need depends on how well you have taken care of your vehicle. If you have been following the recommended maintenance schedule you will be closer to ready. Consult with a local mechanic for a complete list but here are a few things that can catch you off guard. A battery that has been worn down by summer heat may fail when very cold. A capacitance test will reveal its true condition. Poor heating or engine freeze-up caused by lack of regular cooling system care. Flush the system and the heater core on a scheduled basis to keep it in good shape. Don’t forget to inspect belts and hoses; the cold is very hard on them. Burtrum City • September 7, 2021 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the August 9, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; and the city discussed current bills/invoices and a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Sharon Erickson, finance report was accepted, and bills paid.

New Business: City received bid of $6,200.00 to replace culverts at the end of the alley. Motion to accept bid was made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and Kevin Rohde.

Old Business: Dan the Fire Marshall has requested the school be boarded up and have no trespassing signs placed on the property and will come back to inspect it.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, October 4.

City Clerk Laura Horvath Grey Eagle City • August 10, 2021 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 10th day of August 2021 in council chambers. Council members present were Brad Johnson, Roland Ahrendt and Brian Hollenkamp. Council member Bill Pohlmann was absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Janine Kutter, Tim Ainali, Barb Ainali, Terry Lanoue, Mike Meagher, Jr Bueckers, Charla Bueckers, Steve Neville and Larry Van Hout.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the July 13, 2021 meeting as written. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Charla Bueckers is seeking an extension of the contract with Tom’s Refuse, with no changes. The current contract will not expire until the end of May 2022. Tom’ Refuse will be purchased by Long Prairie Sanitation effective October 1, 2021 and the contract could then be assigned to Long Prairie Sanitation after the sale date. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the extension of the contract with a new expiration date the end of May 2027. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Steve Neville reported that the new picnic tables are at the picnic shelter and discussed whether or not to bolt them down. It was the consensus of the council not to bolt down the new tables and the old wooden tables will be removed and placed elsewhere in the City.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve snowmobile grass drags for CMRP (Central Minnesota Pond Racing) on the southeast side of the city on October 2, 2021 with approval from the property owners and with the rescue rig and Fire Department personnel on hand. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the building permit application for Tim Ainali to put in a 14’ x 24’ cement slab for his shed. A second was made

by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the building permit application for St. Joseph’s Church to put in a curb on the west end of the parking lot with adjoining property owner approval. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

2. The pickup rear shackle rusted out and went through the box. It will cost approximately $150 for parts plus labor to repair. A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve the truck repair. A second was made

by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve KLM to spray the weeds at the ponds at the same rate as the last application. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Janine Kutter discussed items relating to Lakeview Cemetery. Janine also informed the council that Bill and Amy Hinman voluntarily cleaned numerous Veterans markers at Lakeview cemetery.

The council declined a request to loan out the bleachers for a family reunion.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve a temporary liquor license for the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club for Monday, September 6, 2021 for the Labor Day tractor pull. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Joe will talk to a resident regarding required connection to city water when a property has been sold or transferred.

The council received a draft from the City Attorney regarding the moratorium. The council was instructed to review the draft and be prepared to discuss or make changes at the next meeting.

The 2022 preliminary budget and levy was presented to the council for review. The levy will need to be approved by resolution at the next meeting.

Property clean up/junk cars were tabled.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the following fund transfers: $3,325 from the RV park project funds in the money market to the general fund for removal of the practice wall and slab by the tennis courts, $10,016.67 from the RV park project funds in the money market to the general fund for picnic tables at the picnic shelter and $110,000 from the Sewer Rehab Project fund to the money market fund for amount reimbursed for city CD’s that were cashed in to pay for items before project started. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of claims #2201-#2221 totaling $418,872.80. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dear Neighbor

By Sherry Kutter, Grey Eagle This is a touchy subject but I would still like to chat with you about it. It’s the Texas abortion ban. I sincerely honor your kind, compassionate hearts and will continue to do so even if you question or disagree with my concerns.

A woman does not consider an abortion lightly. She may know that she doesn’t have the emotional, financial or moral support to raise a healthy, happy child. She may have hoped to be a doctor but this option and other professions would not be available due to the time needed to raise a child. Without the abortion option, more women will be destined to lives of poverty and depression. It’s not easy to hold down a front line job at poverty wages and care for a child. It is rare when anyone steps up to help. Pro-life and church organizations have moved on to other activities.

Unfortunately our “pro-life” politicians are no longer pro-life once they get our votes and the child is out of the womb. Like my Senator Paul Gazelka, they get our votes, cut support for young families and call them lazy. If our politicians were truly pro-life we would see this in their compassion, aid and support for families, workers and our environment. We would not see hungry, suffering, impoverished children in Minnesota. Women are less of a problem for these politicians if they are

What critical Christian and moral values do these same pro-life politicians lack? Honesty, compassion, generosity and love are a few. They are quick to be self-righteous, judgemental, selfish and will blame anyone who dares to disagree with them.

Another concern about the ban is that we know abortions will not stop. They will continue but will be illegal and unsafe for the mother and child. I have a personal, well-documented family story of this nature that resulted in two deaths in 1928. I think of my great-grandmother often and wish there had been better options.

I honor the choices that you want to make about your own lives. Please honor mine.

Let’s not allow our kind, compassionate hearts to be tricked by politicians who want our vote. Let’s all be alert for the tricksters who come, insincerely, holding a cross.
