Do what is right, not what is easy -By Harvey Mackay A butcher, who had a particularly good day, proudly flipped his last chicken on a scale and weighed it for a customer.

“Almost 6 pounds,” he said.

“That’s a little too small,” the woman said.

“Don’t you have anything larger?”

Hesitating, but thinking fast, the butcher returned the chicken to the refrigerator, paused a moment, then took out the same chicken and brought it out to the woman and said, “This one is 6.3 pounds.”

The woman paused for a moment and then declared, “You know what, I’ll take both of them.”

Business ethics, like chickens, come home to roost. Lying to customers, or anyone for that matter, will destroy all trust that you have worked to establish.

I once again had the opportunity to speak at the 10th annual Integrity Summit last month in Phoenix, the brainchild of co-founders Gregg Ostro, CEO of Go Media Companies, and Jerry Colangelo, former owner of the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Colangelo, who headed up USA Basketball for 14 years, said: “For us the “i” in winning is integrity. If you conduct yourself with integrity and your business with integrity, it will lead to very positive results.”

Integrity Summit is a half-day event chock full of inspiration, education and real-life stories from leaders of business, government and non-profit organizations coming together to raise the Integrity Quotient® across their organizations and the marketplace as a whole.

It’s like getting a PhD in integrity decisionmaking to give you competitive advantages and rewards.

Each year Integrity Tiger awards are presented to distinguished leaders who are widely known and recognized for operating consistently with integrity in

business, education, government, sports and philanthropy. I was fortunate to be recognized one year as an Integrity Tiger.

Larry Fitzgerald, the former superstar wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals and a previous Integrity Tiger Award winner, said: “Integrity is really the biggest thing in our lives. It’s who we are and what we want our kids to live by. It defines us in one direction or another.”

Integrity is not something you show others. It is how you behave behind their back.

I was shocked to hear some of these numbers: 60% of workers believe managers as well as 40% of their co-workers breach integrity; 60% of high school to grad school students admit to cheating; 52% of employees admit to stealing office supplies; and 43% of store merchandise losses are due to employee theft.

Doing the right thing is never the wrong thing to do.

I learned integrity from my father at an early age. He was looking at my report card and said, “One thing in your favor son – with these grades, you couldn’t possibly be cheating.”

Speaking of college students cheating, Introductory Chemistry at Duke University has been taught for about a zillion years by Professor Bonk and his course is known affectionately as "Bonkistry."

One year, four guys were taking Chemistry and doing pretty well on all the quizzes, midterms and labs. They were each earning a solid "A" going into the final exam. They were so confident that the weekend before the final exam they decided to go up to the University

of Virginia to party with some friends. Due to bad hangovers, they overslept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning.

Rather than taking the final exam then, they explained to Professor Bonk that they had driven up to the University of Virginia for the weekend and had planned to come back in time to study but they had a flat tire on the way back and didn't have a spare, so they didn't get back to campus until late Sunday night.

Professor Bonk thought this over and then agreed that they could make up the final the following day. The four guys were elated and relieved. They studied that night and went in the next day. Professor Bonk placed them in separate rooms, handed each of them a test booklet, looked at his watch and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, which was something simple about molarity and solutions and was worth 5 points.

“Cool,” each of them thought. “This is going to be a slam dunk.” But they were unprepared for what they saw on the next page. It read: Which tire? (95 points) Mackay’s Moral: If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Horse Sense

A majority of the horses we see today are slim, trim and always appear to be well groomed.

The horses pulling the Amish buggies are usually dark colored and have the ability to maintain a trotting pace for miles.

Most of the rest of the horses we see are primarily for the recreational pleasure of their owners. They usually appear very well cared for, are accustomed to being ridden and they think that they are pets. The owner keeps them well bathed, just like he would constantly keep a clean car. After all, clean horses, clean cars, clean houses and mowed yards make the owner think they make a better impression on other people.

Horses from years past were generally almost twice as big as today's horses. They usually existed to do work, hard, heavy work that the human was unable to do by himself. In most cases the horses existed on the farm for a purpose, as did the rest of the farm animals, not to allow them to become pets, because the farmers knew that at some time the animal would need to be terminated and if they were kept at a personal distance it made the final solution easier.

Work horses were not only of different appearance, but they didn't think alike either.

Some work horses wouldn't allow anyone to ride them. Others refused to work as a team, while others refused to work if the other team member wasn't with them. They all seemed to have their own idea of what was correct.

One reader described an experience as a 13 year old, when he and his father went 4 miles to buy a horse for $30.00 from an older lady. After the financial transaction was completed Dad told his son to get on the horse and ride it home. The lady said, “you can't ride that horse.” Dad said “my kid can ride any horse.” As soon as the son sat on the horses back it bucked him off. He decided to try again and this time he flew even higher and landed

hard on his shoulder. After which Dad decided that he should try to lead the horse home.

During the trip a bus passed them, scared the horse, who ran through a ditch with a couple of feet of water, but the kid held on to the lead rope and finally got the horse to stop. Good thing the horse didn't decide to go through a fence. The horse refused to enter a barn, so a neighbor came over and they put a feed pail over his head and backed him into the barn.

It was found that the horse refused to team up with another horse, but worked very well by himself. The best demonstration of his working ability included dragging cut logs from the woods. He was rested between trips to get logs because he pulled so hard he wore himself out. When he went to the mink farm, due to his age, he also bucked off the crew that came to get him, but they were able to lead him into a trailer.

Another reader told of a team that just didn't want to be separated. In one instance one horse of the team was hitched to a carriage, while the other was put in the pasture. When the carriage went past the pasture, the pastured horse followed along on the inside of the fence.

When the pastured horse reached a corner post in the pasture, the horse on the carriage stopped too and refused to go any further.

Since the carriage was made for only one horse, they returned to the farm, put the team back together and took the pickup to town.

In another case a team was attached to a harrow by one of the kids, but when they reached the end of the field, the team would go no further or turn around. They just wouldn't work for the kid. It seemed that the team had reached an agreement that they would stop pulling at the end of the field. The kid's dad walked out to the team and harrowed and the son took the other team and continued his dad's plowing job. Sometimes it's better to not argue with a horse.

I was intrigued the other day as my wife, Lori, and I were talking about God’s healing. So many people either do not know that God will heal them, or they don’t ask, or they do not pursue Him. Luke 8 describes this same scenario. Jesus was walking along and there were a lot of people with Him, in fact crowding in close. They were amazed at His teaching, and they wanted to hear more. One man, Jairus, came up close and begged Jesus to come and heal his daughter. So, Jesus was on His way when a woman, who could not get close enough thought, if I only touch Jesus clothes, then I would be healed. Lydia M. Zenzen

Lydia M. Zenzen, age 103, of Meire Grove, died peacefully with her daughter by her side on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, November 3 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Lydia Mary Schmiesing was born March 24, 1918, in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Theresa (Petermeier) Schmiesing. She attended country school in Getty Township. She had a desire to continue her education but being the seventh child of nine, she was needed at home to help with family obligations. On May 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Clarence Zenzen at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

The couple farmed near Meire Grove in Getty Township for seven years then moved to Meire Grove.

Lydia was an avid quilter and was a cook for many weddings and anniversaries at church.

She enjoyed reading, baking, watching the MN Twins, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Poor Soul’s Society, and Rosary Society.

Survivors include her daughter, Aurelia Schwanke of St. Cloud; son-in-law, Steve Uphus of Hastings; grandchildren, Brian, Bruce, Bradley, and Barry Uphus, Daryl Zenzen, Sara Decker, Bethany Krattenmaker, Debbie Remaly, Chris Zenzen, Tina Aagard, Joe Zenzen, and Patty Turner; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Zenzen on December 8, 2005; her parents; children, Anna Mae Uphus, Albin Zenzen, and Arthur Zenzen; son-in-law, David Schwanke; daughters-in-law, JoAnn Zenzen and Mary Zenzen; brothers, Henry, Ervin, and Alphonse Schmiesing; sisters, Ann Schmiesing, Agnes Meyer, Alvina Zenzen, Clara Clobes, Alma Meyer, and Bernadine “Bernie” Schmiesing.

Clarine H. Stalberger, age 86 of Meire Grove, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 4 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Clarine Hildegard Marthaler was born September 25, 1935, in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alphonse and Dorothy (Imdieke) Marthaler. She was united in marriage to Cyril Stalberger on July 20, 1957, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

Clarine worked as a cook/bartender at a local establishment in Meire Grove for 40 years.

She was famous for her homemade bread and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. She enjoyed playing bingo, and attending the annual classmate get together.

Clarine was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic United Financial, and Lake Henry American Legion Post 612 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughters, Bev (Chuck) Winter of Greenwald and Sandy (Joe) Worms of Glenwood; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Marthaler of Cold Spring; and sister, Janice (Wil) Kalstrom of St. Cloud.

Clarine was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril Stalberger on October 27, 1984; parents; brother, Denis Marthaler; sisters, Lavina Walz and Dorothy Lembeck; brothers-in-law, Leander “Lindy” Walz, and Allen Lembeck; and sister-in-law, Lucille Marthaler.

Alphonse A. “Alphie” Malley, Jr., age 47 of Albany, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at his home in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota.

Alphonse Andrew Malley, Jr. was born September 8, 1974 in Albany, Minnesota to Alphonse, Sr. and Lucille (Rakotz) Malley. He was united in marriage to Lynn Massmann on November 18, 2006 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Alphie farmed his entire life on the family farm, helping with chores and eventually running the farm while he was still in high school. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Alphie enjoyed going to auctions, playing cards, hanging out with his friends, going to dances, and looking at farm equipment. Family and farming were the two most important things in Alphie’s life.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Malley of Albany; children, Kyle, Missy, Michele, Kelli, and Alex, all at home; sister, Debbie (Scott) Stoermann of St. Rosa; and many nephews and nieces.

Alphie was preceded in death by his parents.

Arthur E. “Art” Harlander, Sr., age 94 of Holdingford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

Arthur Edward Harlander was born February 2, 1927 in Holding Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank, Jr. and Helen (Young) Harlander. He was united in marriage to Theresia Barbara Breth on October 22, 1946 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Holdingford. Art was a lifelong farmer who farmed east of Holdingford.

In 1949, he purchased a new Farmall H tractor which is still used to this day. He cherished the farm and his family, and loved when people would come to visit and reminisce.

He was a member of All Saints - St. Mary's Catholic Church in Holdingford and St. Joseph’s Society. Art’s pride and joy were his horses and treated his Holstein cows as pets. For 26 years in a row, Art pulled the water wagon with his horses at the Bill Vouk’s Steam Show. Art’s faith and family was near and dear to his heart. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Patty (Jay) Knevel of Waite Park and Art, Jr. (Rene) Harlander of Holdingford; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother, James (Mary Ann) Harlander of St. Cloud; and sister-in-law, Frances Breth of Albany.

Art was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Theresia Harlander on April 4, 2016; parents; granddaughter, Sandra Rose Rene Harlander; and brother, Alvin Harlander.

Carl O. Gilsrud, age 66 of St. Rosa, passed away after a 27-day fight with COVID and Influenza on Sunday, October 31, 2021, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, November 5 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany with Rev. Kirsten Nelson Roenfeldt officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday at the church in Albany.

Carl Oliver Gilsrud was born November 26, 1954 in St. Peter, Minnesota to George and Mary (Graham) Gilsrud. On August 26,1978 he married Joyce Christen at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany. Together they raised a family of six. Carl worked for Electrolux for 23 years as a press operator and retired in 2008.

Carl was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Farming. He was an avid fisher and hunter and enjoyed being in the outdoors. He also was an avid sports enthusiast and sang in church choirs for many years. In his younger years, he enjoyed time spent on his hobby farm and time with Tilly. His favorite all time activity was spending time with his grandkids telling them stories, jokes, and teaching them life skills. Carl was a loving husband, father, grandpa, brother, and friend and will be missed by all who knew him.

Dear Motor Medics, I have been watching as cars and the car market is changing. With the move towards cars without internal combustion engines and cars that drive themselves I find myself a bit overwhelmed and wondering where this will all go. I live in town now and have a 10 mile commute each way and am thinking about an electric car. If I get one it will be my only vehicle and wonder what I will do about power if I want to travel across the state or country for that matter.

-Tim in Onida, South Dakota Dear Tim, As the number of electric cars on the road grow so will the number of places to recharge them just as when the first gasoline vehicles appeared on the scene. In 1905 there wasn't a gas station on every corner, but it didn't take long for them to appear to meet demand. Supply will always meet demand so eventually you will be able to recharge a car at almost any exit but for now you will need to plan trips accordingly so you can make sure that you have a place to recharge. When shopping for that vehicle make sure you choose one with enough battery life for the driving you think you will be doing as well. Electric cars can vary in range from a couple hundred miles on a charge to more than double that range but the longer the range the more it will cost.

Some of the technology is very impressive and the cars can in some cases even see better than a driver can in certain situations. A computer always monitors everything everywhere where we can only see one direction. In theory the driverless car should be safer than one that has a human driver alone but... We wonder what will happen when the car must decide what to hit in an eminent crash situation.

Grey Eagle Township • October 4, 2021 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe and Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda.

Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the September 7, 2021 minutes to the board. Ray made a motion to approve the minutes. Mike made the second. All in favor, Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for September. Claims list included claims 36123620 for a total of $3,607.26. Ray made the motion to pay the claims, Mike made the second. All in favor, Motion carried. Mail included a job posting for Columbia Gear and U of MN training notice.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray asked about who is responsible for trees that fell during the last storm. Discussion was had about the need to get them out of the road right of way. Property owners should be cleaning up trees from their properties, however, several are absent owners or elderly. Ron said he would clean up what is left to clean up now. Scherping and Carr’s will begin cutting in the areas that were discussed at last month’s meeting. Ray reported the crack filling has been completed. Ray reported he has visited with Erv about the boat access on Big Birch and how to improve it. Erv presented a bid for $6,500.00. He stated he may need a permit from the county but DNR was ok with it as long as he didn’t go in the water. Mike made a motion to accept the bid, Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried. Some discussion on obstructions and trees planted in the road right of way. Board members were unsure of the exact width of the road, however, there needs to be room for snow disposal and maintenance.

Clerk will prepare a letter to the property owner.

Ron reported he had checked on the sewage line that was put through Arbor Drive, and said it was very well done.

Arctic Dr., had a call about gravel not spread out, which Erv took care of. Angler and Ascot had several washouts after the heavy rain. Erv presented his 20212022 snow removal contract at $105 per hour. Ray made a motion to accept the contract amount, Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Additional agenda item: Ron reported on the County Officers meeting he attended.

Several speakers gave updates about county redistricting, septic updates, sheriff’s office now using drones and a K9 dog, County road projects, and others.

Public Comment: None.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 pm.

Minutes not approved Submitted by Mary Ann Primus, Clerk/Treasurer Burtrum City • October 4, 2021 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 pm on Monday, October 4, 2021 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Kevin Rohde, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the August 9, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; and the city discussed current bills/invoices and a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Sharon Erickson, finance report was accepted, and bills paid.

New Business: Community would like to host a Santa Day Event for the City of Burtrum – tentative day for the event is December 4, the city will post updates and details as they are presented, a motion to accept the Santa Day was made by Sara Macho and seconded by Sharon Erickson.

City is discussing pouring concrete under the bleachers at the Lion’s park, and we have received an estimate of $2,100.00, in regard to this project. A motion to approve this estimate was approved by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Sara Macho.

Old Business: City has been in contact with Dan the Fire Marshall, in regard to the old school building.

Discussions are ongoing to a resolution and we will update the community once a solution has be reached.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021.

City Clerk, Laura Horvath Burnhamville Township • September 28, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held September 28, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Supervisor Joe Muellner and Treasurer Pam Throener were absent. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of August 31, 2021 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and second by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received information from DNR about help fixing Mons Lake access, a thank you from Todd Wadena Community Corrections, notice about a new animal feed lot and information on Swanville Rural Fire Association.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the Swanville fire contract. Motion seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6145 through 6157: Rev. $814.33; R& B $6,192.05; Fire: $11,517.08. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

The clerk applied for the American Rescue Plan Act funding. The board discussed how to spend the money.

The clerk gave an update on the county township association meeting which included discussions on broadband development around the county, grants for water projects, and ways to use ARPA funding. The board agreed to do a resolution to support joint powers agreement to develop better broadband around the county.

In the road report after reviewing bids, Sup. Johnson made a motion to purchase a New Holland skid steer from Melrose Implement. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Sup. Berscheit made a motion and Sup. Johnson seconded to purchase a skid steer trailer and accessories from Hillig Auto. Motions passed. After viewing Sup. Berscheit approved the access permit from Vern Fuchs. Contractor is almost done with road inspection list. Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve snow contract from Herdering, Inc. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $61,110.43.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

The nurse started with certain basics. "How much do you weigh?" she asked.

"135," I said. The nurse put me on the scale. It turns out my weight is 180.

The nurse asked, "Your height?"

"5 foot 6," I said.

The nurse checked and saw that I only measure 5 foot 2 inches. She then took my blood pressure and told me that it is very high.

"Of course it's high!" I screamed. "When I came in here I was tall and slender! Now I'm short and fat!"

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

By Connie Nelson, Victim Advocate Hands of Hope Resource Center, Todd County It’s that woman, and she is writing about Domestic Violence Awareness again! Why doesn’t she stop? It is so sad, we don’t know anyone in that situation, do we?

She continues to write about domestic violence, because it continues to happen and to take the lives of men, women and children in our state, nation, and world every day. Domestic Violence will affect one in four women’s lives and one in seven men’s lives, not to mention the children’s lives that become collateral damage in the process and the whole families that are often destroyed as well, yet we rarely hear anything about October being Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

In 2020, Minnesota had 30 domestic homicides, and so far in 2021 there have been 23 deaths, with ten or so weeks to go. Fortunately, none of them have been in our county, but we have had domestic homicides in the past. This year, Hands of Hope has worked with 64 first time victim/survivors of domestic violence, and each of them do live in this county. If my math is correct, that is a little over 5 new victims a month, 5 people who need assistance in learning how they can stay in that relationship safely, or that need help leaving an abusive situation. They are tired of living with someone that needs to have power and control over their partner. These survivors want to feel safe, and to live free of violence and constant fear.

One can’t make a victim leave, until they decide they are ready, but at that point, we need to be there to listen and support them, while being aware of our own safety. If the situation is too frightening or volatile, you can call 911 for assistance. If it is not an extreme situation, you can refer them to Hands of Hope Resource Center to speak to trained advocates in a safe, FREE, and confidential environment, to just talk or to find help with resources, file a court order, have someone to accompany them to an interview with law enforcement or a medical exam.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Fire: October 18, 2021: Deputy Chris Hagstrom responded to a fire in Oak Twp. The owner of the field had been out harvesting corn when the combine he was using threw a bearing. That started some of the field behind him on fire. The owner did not notice the fire right away. When he did, the fire was approximately 20 rows wide. Fortunately, the fire mostly consumed stubble that was left behind.

It did get into a few standing rows of corn, but only burned the lower portion of the stalk, so any crop loss was minimal. That fire was extinguished by Freeport Fir e Department.

The Melrose Fire Department had responded as mutual aid.

Crash: October 19, 2021: Deputy Nate Watson responded to a single-vehicle crash at 37059 Pelican Lake Road in Avon Twp. Once on scene he found that a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblaz- er, driven by Jason Kunstleben, 43, of Avon, had gone off road and struck a garage. Kunstleben had been driving northbound when he said his brakes failed. He ended up going off the road to his left, struck a power pole, and then a garage. The power pole was sheared off and the impact with the garage caused significant damage to both the garage and the Trailblazer. Kunstleben said he was not injured. Some of the personal property items inside the garage were also heavily damaged in the crash. The Avon Fire Department and Stearns Electric also responded to assist.
