2021 Players of the Year Honored The West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA) celebrated West Virginia’s outstanding golfers on Nov. 12 at the Parkersburg Country Club.

Chris Williams of Morgantown was named the 2021 Player of the Year. He was the 2021 Mid-Amateur Champion, FourBall Champion and Two Person Scramble Champion (both Chris Williams with Cam Roan) and a member of both the West Virginia/Virginia Team Matches and the Captains Putter Team Matches. Williams said, “It was a great year and I’ve got to give a shout-out to my four-ball and scramble partner, Cam Roam. I’m honored to be the Player of the Year.”

Connor Ingels of New Haven received the 2021 Larry Martin Sportsman of the Year Award. This award is named after Larry Martin, known as “The Old Pro”, who founded the West Virginia Golf Association’s (WVGA) Junior Tour 37 years ago. Award eligibility is open to a boy or girl Connor Ingels

18 and under who is a member of the 2021 Callaway Junior Tour, demonstrates good sportsmanship on and off the golf course, embodies what it means to be a “good sport” and shows class at every golf course and demonstrates what it means to be a member of the Junior Tour.

The Senior Player of the Year was Pat Carter of Huntington. He was the 2021 Senior Open Champion, runner up at the 2021 WV Mid-Amateur, Low Senior at both the WV Amateur and WV Open, and member of both the WV/ VA Team Matches and Captains Putter Matches.

The 2021 Women’s Player of the Year was Cathleen Wong of Parkersburg. “This recognition is an honor and I’m really happy,” Wong said. She was Cathleen Wong the 98th WV Women’s Amateur Champion and, with Ben Palmer, was runner up at the 2021 Mixed Championship.

Senior Amateur Championship, while Rainey was runner up at the Women’s Senior Amateur Championship and winner of the WV Amateur Tour at Glade Springs. Younis said, “I want to give special thanks to the WVGA and all they do to promote women’s golf in West Virginia,” while Rainey added, “I love golf and enjoy being around all of the other ladies. I’m so happy to be co-player of the year with Lisa.”

Argyle Downs of Charles Town was the 2021 Junior Player of the Year. He won the 2021 WV Junior Amateur Championship, was runner up in the Junior Match Play Championship, qualified for both the West Argyle Downs Virginia Amateur and the West Virginia Open and won the Callaway Junior Tour event at Locust Hill County Club.

Downs said, “I want to thank the First Tee of West Virginia, Coach Wayne Clark and Locust Hill Golf Club for supporting me.”

The Girl’s Junior Player of the Year was Kerri-Anne Cooke of Oceana. She won the 2021 WV Junior Amateur Championship, is the Girl’s 15-18 Callaway Junior Tour Kerri-Anne Cook Player of the Year, won five Low Round of the Day awards on the Callaway Junior Tour, took 6th place at the WV Women’s Amateur and was a member of the North-South Junior Matches. “Thanks so much to my parents for driving all over the state,” Cook said, adding, “Thank you to the WVGA for all of the events they put on. I’m honored.”

In addition, Jack Richards of Scott Depot received the first-ever WVGA Certificate of Merit in recognition of his record of playing in every Senior Series event for the past 23 years.

The Player of the Year banquet revisited Applause filled the dining room at Parkersburg Country Club in Vienna as the WVGA’s annual Player of the Year Banquet was underway on Nov. 12. Eight golfers were honored at the event, and each was met with a standing ovation as they were presented with their award by Executive Director Brad Ullman.

The evening included two firsts: the first tie for the Women’s Senior Player of the Year, and the awarding of the Certificate of Merit. The certificate was presented to Jack Richards of Scott Depot for playing in every Senior Series event since the latter part of the 1997 season.

With 680 points, the Player of the Year was Chris Williams. Williams won the Mid-Amateur Championship, the Four Ball Championship and the Two Person Scramble Championship with his partner, Cam Roam, Williams was also a member of the West Virginia/Virginia Team Matches and the Captain’s Putter Team Matches. Williams has had a successful career in West Virginia golf; however he recently moved to North Carolina, making 2021 his last year on the West Virginia tour for now. Williams’ favorite part of his 2021 season, was winning the Mid-Amateur.

“I came in second there two years ago, so to get a victory there was nice,” he said.

Cathleen Wong was named the Women’s Player of the Year, with a total of 300 points.

This was her first year competing after taking two years off from competition. She came back strong by winning the 98th West Virginia Women’s Amateur Championship, and placing runner up at the Mixed Championship with partner Ben Palmer. Wong has big plans for next season.

“I love competing and I love playing,” she said. “I’m hopefully going to get a few more wins next year since I’ve got a little more momentum coming in from this year. I’m really excited for next year.”

Younis and Karen Rainey ended the season with 200 points.

Both women had impressive seasons.

Younis was the 2021 West Virginia Senior Amateur Champion, while Rainey won the West Virginia Amateur Tour at Glade Springs. She finished runner up to Younis at the Senior Amateur Championship.

After winning the Senior Open, placing runner up in the Mid-Amateur and being Low Senior at the West Virginia Amateur and West Virginia Open, Pat Carter won Senior Player of the Year honors with 935 points. Carter was also a member of the West Virginia/Virginia Team matches and the Captain’s Putter Matches.

The Junior Player of the Year was presented to Argyle Downes, who had 565 points. He was the champion of the West Virginia Junior Amateur, won at the Callaway Junior Tour event at his home course of Locust Hill, qualified for the West Virginia Amateur and WV Open, and placed second at the Junior Match Play Championship at Parkersburg Country Club.

Kerri-Anne Cooke was presented with the Girl’s Junior Player of the Year Award after accumulating 757.5 points. Cooke won the West Virginia Junior Amateur, had five Low Round of the Day awards while competing on the Callaway Junior Tour, was the 15-18 Callaway Junior Tour Girls Player of the Year, and finished in sixth place at the West Virginia Women’s Amateur at 15 years old.

Connor Ingels was announced as the Sportsman of the Year, and was presented with the Larry Martin Award. Ingels competed on the Callaway Junior Tour, and had a successful high school season at Wahama. He qualified for the high school state tournament in October.

The First Tee hosted “The” Ben McGraw First Tee Classic and Starlit Soiree in October Benjamin McGraw, a Concord University freshman who loved golf, boxing, skiing and time with his family and friends, is the namesake of “The” Ben McGraw First Tee Classic.

He graduated from the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C. His love of golf also included teaching young golfers at The First Tee of Beckley each summer and he planned to attend the Golf Academy of America in pursuit of a career working with the future participants of the game he was so passionate about.

As we celebrated the 13th anniversary of this annual event in October, we continued to honor Ben and his family who have always dedicated themselves to growing the game not only in Raleigh County but throughout the state of West Virginia.

Each year, First Tee - West Virginia holds several premier fundraising and community events, like the Starlit Soiree, to help us serve our ever-growing number of participants. These events are only made possible because of the generosity of our sponsors, who allow us to make each event a rousing success.

The Starlit Soiree, taking place in conjunction with “The Ben McGraw Classic at Glade Springs Resort, drew women from Beckley, Raleigh County and across the state for an evening of fun, friendship and even line dancing!

Character development program entering Logan County through First Tee - WV First Tee – West Virginia, which offers character education, lessons on healthy life habits and golf instruction, is announcing the expansion of its school-based program in Logan County elementary and middle schools.

“This $42,000 investment will allow the program to enter all 11 elementary schools and three middle schools in the county. This is the first time our program has been in free-standing middle schools in West Virginia,” said First-Tee West Virginia Director Jeff Preast.

This First Tee School Program offering is a partnership between the Logan County Board of Education, the Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation and the Michelle Grimmett family, in conjunction with FirstTee West Virginia and the West Virginia Golf Association (WVGA). The training sponsors include Ace Trucking, Inc., Logan Regional Medical Center, Marshall Surgery, Mayo Manufacturing Company, Inc. and Omega Commercial Interiors.

“This program teaches character education and introduces the game of golf to our communities’ youth,” Preast said. “We are excited for Logan County elementary and middle schools to join over 150 additional schools across the State of West Virginia and thousands of schools nationally which teach the program.”

Alex Perry, the gym teacher at Holden Central Elementary School, said, “I am glad that the First Tee program is coming to our school because the area that I teach in, the children are

not exposed to a program like this, and I think this will give them something that they can play for the rest of their life.”

The nine core values taught are honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. The nine healthy habits promoted by the program are energy, play, safety, vision, mind, family, friends, school and community.

“The greatest learning that happens in any classroom is for students to learn resilience and character,” said Logan County Assistant Superintendent of Schools Darlene Dingess-Adkins.

“The First Tee program does both.”

“This program is making a significant and profound impact on our youth in the communities this program serves,” according to West Virginia Golf Association Executive Director Brad Ullman. “We sincerely could not do this without the significant financial support from the Logan County Schools, Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation and Jim and Michelle Grimmett.”

“We did a community grant for the First Tee program to put the program into our three middle schools. The County had funded the rest of the program and an individual funded one of the programs, so we wanted to carry it into the middle schools,” said Wilma Zigmond, president of the Logan County Charitable and Educational Foundation. “We made the commitment because, not only is golf a life-long skill that First Tee in Logan Continued on page 9

you can pick up today and you can wait 10 years and pick back up a golf club, but you’re going to have a skill you can do the rest of your life, number one. Number two, golf is not just a fun sport. It can be a business sport; there’s a lot of decisions made on a golf course. It can be a confidence builder if you get to be a good golfer.

But the main thing about this First Tee program is the character education that goes along with it, and our students need that so badly. We need to know about setting goals. We need to know about being gentlemen and gentleladies.

We need to know that we can do whatever we choose to do in life and golf just shows us one other route to get there.”

Meet the WVGA staff, old and new Executive Director Brad Ullman is a graduate of Williamstown High School and Fairmont State University where he was a member of the golf team for three years. At the age of 11 Brad began working for Larry Martin at Parkersburg Country Club and at 15 became a player-administrator of the Top Flite Junior Tour. In 2007, upon graduation from college, he became a P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Intern for the WVGA and the following year Director of Junior Golf. The previous three years before becoming Executive Director in 2014, he served as the Director of Operations. Brad has a wife, Shelley, and one son, Anthony.

Danielle Monk is Director of Field Services & Outreach. She is originally from the Charleston, WV area and is a 2011 graduate of West Virginia State University where she majored in Communications and minored in Advertising. She also has an 8-year background in accounting and owns Greyscale Photography, LLC. Danielle is a recently married and has two stepdaughters.

Chris Slack is Director of Rules and Competition. He comes from Winfield, WV where he graduated high school in 2006. He attended West Virginia State University and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Business Marketing. During his final year of college and after

completion Chris served as the P.J. Boatwright Intern and became a full-time employee in 2012.

Chris is the go-to guy for all things junior golf.

He is the tournament director for the Callaway Junior Tour, and keeps everything in line throughout the most hectic days of the summer.

Chris is also responsible for Course Rating for all WVGA member golf courses. Away from golf, Chris is a diehard West Virginia University Mountaineer fan.

Jeff Preast is Director of First Tee - West Virginia.

He is originally from Fayette County, West Virginia and is a 2011 graduate of West Virginia State University. He completed his MBA from Salem University in 2013. Prior to joining the staff at the WVGA full-time, Jeff served as a P.J. Boatwright intern in 2012. Jeff has held positions in human resources, insurance consulting, and education fields. Jeff served as the Lead First Tee Coach in Charleston for two years. Jeff lives in Charleston with his wife Caitlyn and their daughter Magnolia Lane. In their spare time, they enjoy operating their business, Magical Preasts Design Co., and cheering on the Mountaineers.

Chance Hindbaugh, originally from Swartz Creek, Michigan, graduated high school in 2011.

He attended the University of Michigan for two years before moving to Arizona to pursue his love for the game of golf. He graduated from The Golf Academy of WVGA Staff

America in 2015 with a Golf Course Management Degree and Associate Business Degree.

Throughout his 4 years in Arizona, he worked at Bear Creek Golf Complex in Chandler, Arizona, finishing his last year there as Assistant General Manager. In 2017, he and his wife Brittany moved to Lexington, Virginia where she started her legal studies at Washington and Lee University. While in Virginia, Chance worked at two different country clubs holding titles of Food and Beverage Manager at The Club at Ironwood in Staunton and Golf Operations Manager/Food and Beverage Manager at Lexington Golf and Country Club in Lexington. His passion for golf started while growing up in Michigan and playing in local junior golf series and the Michigan Powerbilt/Meijer Tour. He now resides in Dunbar, WV with his wife. Outside of work, Chance is a huge Michigan Wolverines sports fan.

Lucas Ware graduated from Grafton High School in 2013, where he was a member of the 2009 WVSSAC AA State Championship Golf Team. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University in 2017 and 2020. He was a two-year member of the Top Flite Junior Tour and played in the 102nd WV Amateur Championship. Prior to WVGA, Lucas worked as Clubhouse Manager for Tygart Lake Golf Course where he grew up learning to play with PGA Professional and five-time WV Open winner, Brad Westfall. He enjoys traveling the country and doing anything outdoors in the beautiful Mountain State, from fishing and hunting to skiing and camping. As a WVU alumni and lifelong fan, he loves watching the Mountaineers!

Diane Slaughter, CAE, APR, Fellow PRSA became the public relations consultant for WVGA in March of 2021. Slaughter formed Homestead Communications in 1993, one of the state’s first independent, female-owned

public relations firms that now provides association management services for five non-profit organizations. She had previously worked as Assistant Advertising Director for The Diamond department store and in several capacities for the WV Society of Certified Public Accountants. She earned her undergraduate degree in journalism and public relations from Marshall University in 1979. In 2015, West Virginia State University dedicated the Diane Slaughter Public Relations Research Laboratory in her honor and she was inducted into the West Virginia Public Relations Hall of Fame in 2021.

Reflecting on an amazing year with thankfulness to so many Now that the holiday season is upon us, we’re reflecting on the tremendous year of golf we had in West Virginia. I’d like to personally congratulate the 2021 Players of the Year, Chris, Cathleen, Pat, Lisa, Karen, Kerri-Anne and Argyle.

Their play this season was not only exceptional, but inspirational in a lot of ways, from Argyle’s historic win at the Junior Amateur Championship to Pat Carter’s continued writing of the history books as the most decorated amateur golfer in WVGA history. Last month our association had the honor of recognizing these individuals’ accomplishments at Parkersburg Country Club at the annual Player of the Year dinner. We also had the unique opportunity to recognize someone for a relatively little known feat, but a record of achievement that will never be matched. Jack Richards was honored with the WVGA’s very first Certificate of Merit Award.

Many know that Jack has played on our wellknown Senior Series for the last 23 years; what they may not realize is that, in those 23 years, Jack has not missed one single senior series event! He is truly the WVGA Iron Man. Thank you, Jack.

The WVGA is very fortunate to have the support of several sponsors and partners and to say we couldn’t do what we do without them is an understatement. Engaging with partners in the WVGA allows us to accomplish so many initiatives for the game of golf across our state.

It enables us to administer and grow the game through projects such as the First Tee and the School Program, as well as the Callaway Junior Tour, along with its Rookie League and High School Series. Having partnerships affords us the opportunity to enhance the players’ experience at our state championships. These partnerships also provide funding to ensure that no matter who the

person is, man, women, junior or senior, there is an opportunity to be a golfer. It is these folks who are the boots on the ground promoting, advocating and providing an arena for this game to prosper in our state. I’d also like to recognize the significant amount of money raised for local charities through the game of golf at these member clubs. Without golf and these golf courses, so many charities would not receive the amount of funding necessary to complete their services and mission and for that we are grateful for this game, as well as our member clubs.

Finally, I would like to recognize the great work of the WVGA Staff and Executive Committee. Their dedication and efforts make a significant and lasting impact on our game for years to come. Our Executive Committee is a group of 11 individuals from diverse backgrounds across this state who are behind the scenes in all facets of our association.
