Letter from the

Executive Director Hello Amazing Supporters, The word for 2025, hands down, is pivot.

That is what we did month in and month out of 2025 with all the awful brought about by the Trump administration. After the election, we knew 2025 was going to be a tough year for forced migrants, and we fully expected resettlement to drop dramatically. We even planned for a new mentoring program, Newcomers to Neighbors, to redirect our resources.

But what followed was far beyond our worst-case scenario planning: • A pause on ALL foreign aid, including resettlement stipends and casework for refugees.

• A stop on ALL resettlement.

• A new focus on accepting only Afrikaners as “refugees.”

• ICE menacing neighborhoods heavily populated with forced migrants.

• Cutting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for refugees without green cards.

• The halt of processing immigration documents for most all refugee countries.

• An end to issuing Special Immigrant Visa to our Afghan Allies.

But luckily, we have amazing supporters like you all who provide HNB with the bulk of our funding, and we had very little direct federal money or restricted funds. Consequently, HNB was able to pivot quickly, helping to mitigate one horror after another. Rental assistance to prevent evictions; casework for brand new arrivals who were left in the lurch; mentoring for those who needed extended casework; and finally, in December, launching Food Assistance for Refugees (FAR), our home-delivered food assistance program for those who lost SNAP. All the while we continued with home set ups – albeit at much smaller levels (but still pivoting couches up stair, much like Ross from Friends), as well as growing our storytelling program and revamping our artisan program.

Through it all, I have been so impressed to see the resilience and graciousness of our new neighbors, like Yessica or Sayed, working through all these obstacles and partnering with HNB to make a better life for their families.

It seems clear that things will not be improving for forced migrants in 2026. But at least we are in a steady state of horribleness, which allows us to plan for the long term without so many pivots. I look forward to a steady 2026 when we double down on welcoming newcomers, and, unlike the federal government, do all we can to make their new lives in the United States a success.

2025 Home Set Ups Ayoub arrived in the United States in October 2025 with his wife and four children, through a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV).

In Afghanistan he was a procurement manager, working with the U.S. Army, and because of that involvement had to leave after the Taliban took over. After staying with his brother for two months, he moved into his own apartment and HNB helped him with his home set up.

Ayoub said his favorite item is the sofa set, which he says is very comfortable and has become the center of their family time together.

“HNB generously provided us with all the essential

furniture. They completely transformed our empty apartment into a comfortable and fully furnished home. At that time, we were thinking about how we could manage to provide these items, but the they fulfilled a very important need for our family and truly helped us build a proper home.”

2025 Newcomers to Neighbors Badsah Mohammad Kheshki came to Maryland in November of 2024 with his wife and three children, fleeing Afghanistan because his life was at risk after supporting the U.S. military there.

While he initially arrived to support via the resettlement agency, Badsah and his family were cut off from case management and their resettlement stipend in January when the administration halted all foreign aid. Homes Not Borders stepped in to provide the Kheshki family with rental assistance, and then they became part of the first cohort of Newcomers to Neighbors.

He and his wife and children attended outings like the Nationals baseball game and workshops on topics like “how to improve their employment situation”. Badsah said his mentors and the HNB staff helped him “navigate many challenges, provided valuable guidance, and assisted me with important resources and services needed to establish a stable life in my new community.”

2025 Artisan Empowerment

Atheer came to the United States in February 2016 with his wife and two children, on a special immigrant visa after fleeing Iraq because he worked as a driver for the U.S. government.

He first started working for a bakery, but then in 2021, Homes Not Borders hired Atheer as a driver and mover. His interest in carpentry started after he would make simple coffee tables and end tables out of scrap wood when they were needed for a home set ups. Then in 2025, when home set ups slowed down, Atheer honed his carpentry skills and started making cutting boards and custom furniture.

He said he is most proud of the first custom coffee table he made. He said he worked hard to figure out how to create tapered legs that blended with the exquisite wood top, and that after creating the perfect legs, he was “overwhelmed with pride.”

2025 Storytelling Amandine is originally from Cameroon, took HNB storytelling classes in 2024 and has since has made four appearances in front of three groups. She tells the story of when her parents made her stay with relatives in France when she was 12 because of the restrictive law that banned LGBTQ+ people in Cameroon. She moved to the United States as an adult and now works as an accountant when she is not telling her stories.

She says she really appreciated the coaching and that helped here go more in depth into her journey and helped her come to see the intention behind her parents’ decision.

“I feel like it (storytelling) helped me release a difficult time of my life and process my loss and see it in a new perspective…I like going to schools and telling my story because the kids ask good questions, some that I never thought of and it makes me feel good that they are getting an experience that they may have never thought about or reflected on.”
