Summertime - a time for slowing down, taking a break from studies, and enjoying

vacations. Suntan lotion, sandals and flip flops, lemonade, flowers, swimming, pools, laughing children, sprinklers, watermelon, ice tea, early morning and late evening walks with our dogs, leisurely reading a good book are all things we associate with summer. Of course, we can’t forget the picnics, Memorial Day, parades, and other outdoor activities. Summer is a time to add rest, relaxation, and recreation to our normal routines of living.

Know the airline’s pet policies before making your reservations

E

very day, thousands of travelers take to the skies with their pets for a variety of reasons. In the United States, over 2 million animals fly on planes each year. Flying your dog, cat or other critter can be complicated, expensive and stressful. If you are planning to fly with your pet here are a few helpful tips. There are three basic options for pets and air travel: fly with your pet in the cabin; check your pet as baggage, or fly your pet as cargo.

Flying with your pet in the cabin may be your best choice if you have a cat, small dog or other small pet. The maximum weight depends on the airline, but typically tops out at 20 to 25 pounds, including the carrier, which must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. It is important to reserve space for your pet as early as possible since most airlines limit the total number of pet carriers per flight as a first come first served basis.

Some airlines offer the option to check your pet as baggage in an approved carrier; fees vary depending on the airline. Your pet flies in a pressurized and climatecontrolled compartment in the lower portion of the plane. You need to check weight limits and breed restrictions. Check restrictions before you book, and tell the airline you plan to check a pet.

The other option is to fly your pet as cargo. Flying a pet as cargo is generally more expensive than other options. Depending on the airline, the cost will be tied to the size of the carrier or the weight of the pet and carrier, as well as the length of the trip. If you’re flying your pet as cargo, you can use a professional pet shipping company.

Flying with a Service or Emotional Support Animal

The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to permit a service animal that performs specific tasks or gives emotional support to accompany a passenger with a disability.

Recently there has been an increase in the number of problems with emotional support animals on flights. Many airlines are tightening their policies regarding comfort or emotional support animals. As of March 2018, Delta and United require extra documents from passengers flying with emotional support animals such as a signed veterinary health form, current vaccination records and confirmation that the animal has been trained to behave in public. Almost all airlines ask for a letter or signed form from a certified mental health professional.

Non-Profit Organization Spotlight

Community Cat Coalition of Clark County The Community Cat Coalition of Clark County (C5) began its highly successful Trap-NeuterReturn program (TNR) in January 2010. It is an all-volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by protecting healthy free-roaming and feral cats in Clark County from unnecessary euthanasia. The volunteers are dedicated to making life better for the homeless cats, their caretakers and the community. In addition to the humane TNR program, they manage outdoor cat colonies, and do educational out-reach.

Since its beginning, they have trapped, neutered, and released over 32,000 feral and stray cats. The cats are released back to the colony caretakers who provide food, water, and shelter. The TNR program has contributed to a 90% reduction in cat euthanasia at the local shelters.

The work of C5 is funded through donations and grants so that their services are provided at no cost to the caretakers. If you have feral cats which need to be spayed or neutered you can call them at 702-582-5867.

STOP THAT SCRATCHING!

Have you ever engaged in a “no scratching” power struggle with your cat?

Probably every cat mom or dad has struggled with this behavior. It can be very destructive to furniture, carpets and other household items if not properly handled.

F

irst, it is important to understand that scratching is a natural cat behavior. Cats scratch for a number of reasons.

Scratching is a feline pedicure - it helps remove the outer sheath of a nail and promotes the healthy growth of new nails. It helps to strengthen their backs and front legs. They scratch to communicate their presence to other cats. They have scent glands in their paw pads and scratching marks their territory by leaving their scent.

Finally, it helps relieve stress and they enjoy it!

Sprinkle lots of catnip on the scratchers as an added incentive AND reward them with praise and possibly a treat when they use them.

Here are a few ideas to create a win-win for your scratch-loving cat and for you. To encourage appropriate scratching there are two essential items: vertical scratching posts and horizontal cardboard scratchers. Select ones that are high enough and large enough to allow your cat to do complete stretches. Watch your cat to discover their “preferred” scratching areas.

Place the scratching posts/scratches near those areas.

Another method is to discourage inappropriate scratching by making those areas undesirable places to scratch. For example, cats don’t like having sticky paws and placing double-sided tape on the arms of chairs or sofas can be effective to stop destructive scratching. There are sprays available that replaces your cat’s “communications” with an unpleasant scent that also discourages scratching.

Stop in at your local pet store and ask for other products that are available to help.

If your cat persists in destructive scratching consult with your veterinarian or a cat behaviorist for ideas and support.

Do’s and Don’ts for Decorating with Pets

You love your home and your pet, so it’s only natural that you want the two to work together. And while it’s important to find ways to make your pet feel comfortable, there are certain aspects of home décor to take into consideration to keep peace in your home. Here are a couple do’s and don’ts to help you.

CARPET AND RUGS It’s best with pets if you steer away from carpet, but for those who still enjoy the plush, consider this.

DON’T purchase a looped carpet or area rug as their nails will snag it in a red hot second.

DO get a cut pile instead.

DON’T buy expensive area rugs in the rooms your pet spends the most time.

Slobber, accidents, pet traffic, hair balls and just the oil from their fur can ruin a pricey investment. Also, avoid fringe, it will most likely just get chewed off.

DO look into a moderately priced area rug and upgrade the pad to give you more of a luxurious look and feel.

WOOD FLOORS When you know your pets like to run around the house you need to know their nails are going to scratch any wood floor.

DON’T install high gloss and/or smooth wood floors and expect them to always look like new.

DO select one that is hand scraped with a distressed finish which you can touchup with a stain stick. Engineered wood is one of the hardest. Check what the Janka hardness number is, the higher the better. It measures the resistance of wood to denting and wear. Or even better, consider all the options available in wood plank tile.

ACCESSORIES Accessories are the finishing touches to any room, like a pearl necklace is for a basic black dress. But you have to watch where you place them and what they’re made of.

DON’T use any breakables or sentimental items within their reach. Tails, paws and teeth can bring an end to your precious items.

DO display them on wall shelves, in a curio cabinet or hutch piece. Make a wall gallery by placing shelves with your accessories in with your artwork.

DON’T have pillows or throws with tassels and fringe. They’re an invitation to chew and can become a choking hazard.

DO decorate with pillows that have a decorative cord trim. It’s an attractive and safe alternative.

WINDOW TREATMENTS I’m finding more people are moving away from fabric window treatments, mainly because of the upkeep due to our dusty environment. But if you still want that extra colorful layer, be mindful when selecting the fabric and style.

DON’T use fabrics which are hard to clean, such as linen, silk or delicate sheers.

DO use slipcovers instead. There are many inexpensive, machine-washable options which also let you change your décor when the feeling moves you.

BEDDING We all love the pretty dressed beds we see in magazines, but many are not meant for a pet-friendly home.

DON’T dress your bed in expensive, delicate linens, especially if your pet sleeps with you or spends a considerable amount of time on your bed. Fussy and dry cleanable sets are not for you.

DO look for machine washable treatments; dry cleaning gets expensive.

DO purchase washable comforters, quilt or duvet covers. I know bedding can be dry cleaned, but that can become expensive if it needs to be done frequently.

DON’T puddle your drapery panels. Fabric on the floor is an open invitation to your pet to cozy up or make into a chew toy.

And finally,

DO have them a couple inches off the floor.

Depending upon the room and style, they can stop a few inches below your window.

This is a more casual look, and one that is very pet friendly.

UPHOLSTERY We all have to sit somewhere and that includes Fido. I know not everyone allows their pets on the sofa, but they still walk by it. And if they are like my Matilda, love to rub their body against it.

DON’T use any fabrics that have a weave.

Fur loves to get in-between the fibers and are a pain to get out and feel like a pin sticking you.

DO consider fabrics that are easy to clean, such as ultra-suede, faux or real leather. With

DON’T think you can have a picture perfect home with pets. Putting in expensive and priceless items and then getting mad at your pets is not a way to live. The truth is, you cannot live impeccably with pets.

You have to accept it and make certain concessions.

DO face it, having pets adds work to our daily routine and life. But we all know they are well worth it with all the love and joy they bring to our lives.

Looking for a fun cure for those hot summer days? All you need are 3 basic ingredients to change those “dog days of summer” into exciting, fun times: You, your dog, and…WATER! Yes, some of the best fun you can have this summer can be had with entertaining and creative water activities.

E

ven if you don’t have a swimming pool, there are many water activities you can do in your own backyard. By using items you already have, like a garden hose and a sprinkler, you and your furry friend can enjoy hours of fun playing in the water. Hook up your sprinkler and play fetch through it. (Don’t be surprised if your dog attacks the sprinkler itself!) If you don’t have a sprinkler, try attaching a spray nozzle and create your own games. Try squirting your dog’s favorite ball across the yard and see if he’ll chase it. Getting wet and cool is the main goal. If you’re wanting more of a pool experience, purchasing an inexpensive kiddie pool is always an option. Favorite toys tossed in the pool are always a challenge to fetch. For added entertainment, try freezing a water balloon to create a large, round ice-cube. After removing the balloon material itself, toss it in the pool and watch your dog’s puzzled reaction. He will undoubtedly enjoy having a huge slippery ice cube to play with! When your dog is tired from playtime, he may also enjoy lying down in the pool for a long soak.

After swimming, it is always a good idea to give your dog a rinse off or even a quick bath with shampoo. Towel dry your dog, making sure that the inside and outside of his ears are thoroughly dry. (Towel tug-of-war during this process is often unavoidable )

Non-Profit Organization Spotlight

Founded in 2015, Desert Diva Dogs started as a small meetup group and quickly became a non-profit. Their mission is to serve and support rescues and community organizations dedicated to improving and saving the lives of animals. They collect and donate needed supplies for rescue organizations so that their resources can be fully utilized toward rescuing, providing medical care, and placing more animals. They work with community organizations providing supplies and petrelated information and resources to those in need to help keep pets in their homes.

They now serve over 35 rescues and have provided over 5100 supply items thanks to the generosity of donations from the community.

Desert Diva Dogs is launching a monthly bowling fundraiser for animal rescues called Pins for Paws. The 1st one will be held on May 8th at the Bowling Center at The Orleans Hotel & Casino.

The monthly fundraisers will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month to raise funds to help rescues with veterinary expenses.

Horses and humans have enjoyed a special relationship for thousands of years. For largely unknown reasons, working with horses seems to have a uniquely positive impact on people. This positive therapeutic effect that has been witnessed and studied by cultures all over the world and has launched specialized equine therapy centers nationwide. Equine therapy has become an increasingly popular and effective therapy for those struggling with a variety of psychological and interactive issues; specifically, for helping those who may be having difficulty with communication or anxiety issues.

Equine therapy has been especially helpful for those with communication difficulties by teaching them about body language and reading subtle bodily cues. Horses can communicate with each other almost silently, which is something that we humans are unaccustomed to. With the flick of an ear or the timely swish of a tail, a horse can reveal its mood, desires, and intentions without making a sound. By interacting with a horse, participants attempt to engage in a relationship using non-verbal cues to achieve a series of assigned tasks. Participants learn new methods of communication while also learning how to motivate and encourage their partner horse. By learning effective horse communication, individuals can then utilize those skills in their interactions and communication with people.

For those who are dealing with stressful life situations or general heightened anxiety, a horse can be a natural remedy. A horse’s quiet and non-judgmental disposition has a naturally relaxing effect on people. The mental and psychological benefits horses provide make them one of nature’s best stress relievers. Whether you’re grooming, feeding, or riding them, the mere presence of a horse has a soothing effect.

The skills learned while working with horses are transferable to so many human interactions.

he community of dog owners focused on canine health is growing at a rapid pace. Since the launch of the film Pet Fooled, a documentary about the inner workings of the pet food industry, pet parents are starting to feed a more species appropriate diet to their dogs and extending the longevity of their lives by leaps and bounds.

BUT WHAT ABOUT CATS Nutrition is often overlooked by us cat parents, but giving our kitties good nutrition is actually one of the best ways that we can love them. Nutrition is the fundamental foundation for overall health. It’s also nature’s best prevention against feline illnesses and ailments.

Cats are stoic beings and they mask pain instinctively.

Everyone who has ever been owned by a cat knows that felines seem super resilient and we usually don’t know they’re sick or hurting until the damage has already been done.

This is why cat parents have to be even more proactive than dog parents when it comes to our cat’s health. It’s our job, as responsible pet parents, to make sure they live the long and healthy lives they deserve.

WHERE DO WE START First, cats should be fed a diet that closely mirrors what they would eat in the wild if they were hunting their own prey. This means the diet should be high in animal protein, low in starch and carbohydrates and no grains. Cats can’t actually process grains in their digestive tract the way that we can as humans. If you find corn or soy in the first 5 ingredients of your cat food, it’s time to switch up the food.

Cats, unlike dogs, have a low thirst drive so they must get moisture from their food. In the wild their prey is made up of 70-80% water. Without the appropriate amount of moisture, our cats stay in a constant state of mild dehydration - which

leads to health problems over time. Feeding them a moisture rich diet allows their bodies to properly function in the way that nature intended.

Over 96% of cat parents feed dry kibble to their kitties - laid out as an all-day buffet for them to munch on whenever they want or need to fuel themselves. If you’re part of this statistic, start adding some wet food into your cat’s daily feedings. We recommend feeding smaller meals 2-3 times per day on a routine schedule.

Another point to consider is supplementation. One of the key ingredients that is missing in all processed foods - that means ANYTHING in a can or a bag – is enzymes. Metabolic and digestive enzymes are the building blocks for our cats’ overall wellbeing. They are very sensitive to heat, so these important enzymes are lost during processing. Enzymes are needed for healthy organ, tissue, cellular, joint and immune functions. If you’re feeding a processed food, you will want to supplement these enzymes back into your cat’s food so that she can still get a well-balanced and healthy diet.

Twenty one years ago, when we rescued our oldest boy, resources for cat health were all but unheard of. We didn’t even think about his nutritional needs or ever consider what kind of diet a cat should be eating for optimized health. We just grabbed a bag of cat food at the market – because it was ‘cat food’. If you have a reputable pet sitter that can come to the house, you’ll want your pet sitter to be as prepared as possible to make them feel more confident while watching your pets. DOG INTERACTION: Does this facility have a play area for all of the dogs to get to know each other? This can be a great advantage if you have a dog who loves social activities, but some dogs don’t play well with others. You can let the facility know your preference.

Why does my dog

?

T O O C S I remember my childhood dog scooting across the carpet; we always thought it was something funny and just a little gross, but there are definitely reasons why dogs scoot their bums and we’ll discuss some commons ones here.

cooting can be caused by anything that causes itching or irritation to the anus or the skin around the anus.

Some causes include anal gland problems, food and environmental allergies, diarrhea, and abnormal growths or tumors in or around the hind end. Yeast and bacterial infections are common secondary problems to these primary causes. Sometimes, in females, scooting can be caused by irritation or infection involving the vulva or urinary tract.

The vulva should always be evaluated when trying to find the source of scooting.

The first thing you should do if you notice scooting is simply check under the tail for any sores, scabs, inflamed red skin, feces on the hairs and any lumps or bumps on the anus or surrounding skin. Be cautious and only attempt this if you know your dog well. Most dogs, especially with irritated bums, can be reactive when in pain. If you feel uncomfortable checking, then don’t hesitate to bring him/her in for an exam by a veterinarian. They will determine if there is any other cause for the scooting other than the most common cause of full anal glands.

The anal glands are glandular sacs located at the 4 and 8 o’clock position if you are looking at the anus. They each have a very thin duct that empties their contents during defecation.

They are usually not visible from the outside, but your vet can feel them on the inside during a rectal exam. These sacs typically are the size of a large pea or almond and are filled with a fluid that varies in consistency, from thin and watery to thick and pasty, and it is heavily scented...not in a pleasant way!

Historically in wolves, the dog’s direct ancestor, the glands were thought to excrete a small amount of this pungent fluid 34

when they defecated for marking of their territory. Today, because domestication pretty much eliminated the need for this marking phenomenon, often times the small duct gets plugged and the sac overfills; this causes distension of the pea size gland and can make it grow to a grape or even a peach pit size! And while wolves and wild dogs might tolerate the smell, most humans can’t!

Have you smelt a pungent, fish like, sometimes metallic smell suddenly from your dog? It could be his/her full anal glands that need to be emptied. The smell, which is leakage from the overly full gland, paired with scooting is most definitely a telltale sign your dog needs to be brought into the vet for a full anal gland emptying or “anal gland expression” as it’s referred in our field. Remember if your groomer expresses the anal glands, they typically only empty from the outside without fully emptying them from the inside like a veterinarian or veterinary technician will. The external expression will help empty some of the glands, but often times they need a periodic full expression by a veterinarian. The expression is affordable, with our charge being $11 for routine expression.

If the glands are felt to be abnormal you will be given the option of a consultation with your veterinarian who will perform an exam and discuss options which may include testing, medications and/or surgery. Surgery is typically reserved to repair anal gland abscesses or for full anal gland removal if there is evidence of chronic issues.

So the moral of the story is... SCOOTING means something! Routine anal gland expression is the most common cause for scooting. If the glands are normal or not full when checked by a veterinarian, there is typically some other medical cause that can be determined.

And don’t forget to check the vulva in females!

The secret to healing is found in the quiet bond we share with animals.

The way to access that space is through meditation.

N

ot that long ago, Reiki was considered unusual and odd. People simply did not understand it or believe in it, but times are changing. Reiki is growing in popularity and it’s even being used in hospitals to help people recover from surgeries and illnesses. And while many people today are familiar with the healing modality of Reiki, far less people have heard of Animal Reiki. You may be wondering, isn’t Reiki for people and Reiki for animals the same thing?

It is and it isn’t.

The word Reiki is a Japanese word meaning spiritual energy, referring to all things that make up the universe. Reiki is compassion and relaxation, and it supports the body and mind’s natural ability to heal. In that sense, Animal Reiki and Human Reiki are the same. However, when it comes to techniques and offering Reiki, the two are very different.

WHAT IS ANIMAL REIKI?

In its simplest form, Animal Reiki is meditating with animals. Research has shown that meditation can help manage anxiety, cancer, depression, heart disease, pain and more. It affects the mind, body, and spirit, and brings a peaceful state of being. When we find peace of mind through meditation, then healing, contentment, transformation and renewal will follow. This can happen not only for us, but also for any animals and people around us. We call this the Reiki Ripple!

WHAT DOES AN ANIMAL REIKI SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Animals are always in control of the Reiki session. They decide if they will accept the Reiki, how much they will accept, if they want to be touched, and how long the session will last.

An Animal Reiki practitioner begins each session by asking the animals permission to proceed. It is as simple as silently letting the animal know that they are there to meditate, offer Reiki and that the animal is free to accept as much, or as little Reiki as they choose. Then the practitioner sets an intention for the exact healing that is needed in this exact moment. Practitioners do not diagnose or try to focus on what they think needs to be healed. They quiet their minds, connect to their compassionate hearts, and then invite the animal into the healing space this creates.

Reiki is ideal for use with animals because it is gentle, noninvasive and doesn’t require physical contact. It doesn’t cause stress, discomfort, or pain, and yet yields powerful results. Animals respond intuitively to Reiki and the peaceful space it creates supports the healing of emotional, behavioral, and physical illnesses and injuries.

HOW WILL A TREATMENT HELP MY ANIMAL?

For animals who are healthy, Reiki helps to maintain their wellbeing by enhancing relaxation and a sense of peace.

For animals who are ill, Reiki supports the body and mind’s natural ability to heal.

For dying animals, Reiki is a powerful yet gentle way to provide comfort, relief from fear and anxiety, and to ease the transition to death.

Reiki is also a wonderful way to support a dying animal’s family through the grieving process.

Reiki is also a safe complement to conventional medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, essential oils and flower essences. It is not a replacement for veterinary medicine.

World Pet Memorial Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of June, is a day set aside for the pet parents of the world to remember and to honor the pets they have lost.

Loving and losing a pet causes the same loss, grief, pain as losing a human loved one. Even when death is expected, most of us are not prepared for the onslaught of raw emotions and feelings that keep surfacing; some describe it as a tsunami of sorrow that overwhelms us when we least expect or are prepared for it. Remembering and honoring our pets is a way to heal from our grief and to celebrate their lives.

Here are a few suggestions for honoring your pet’s memory:

Spend time remembering your pet and the love you shared.

Write out your memories and feelings in a journal or write a letter of appreciation to your pet.

Create a memorial or special space in your home to place photos, tangible items like a special toy, collar, or name tag.

Make a Keepsake Box, Shadowbox or scrapbook to creatively display photos, decorations, and mementos.

Go through your photos and put together a photo album of your pet’s life with you.

Reach out and share some of your memories or photos on social media. Many people have lost pets and your sharing will help them.

Donate money in a pet’s name to an animal charity

Volunteer at an animal shelter or for a rescue.

Remember you are not alone – on June 12 pet parents around the world will be remembering and honoring the pets they have loved and lost.
