Spring GARDEN INSPIRATION Spring gardening is really important and if you have not started with small tasks around the garden, it's not too late! Create a foundation for a beautiful summer garden that will look great for months, if taken care of correctly. Here are a few things you can start doing in your garden to give your home a well-kept, easily maintained garden. SIGNS OF GROWTH Now is a good time to start paying attention to which plants and trees are starting to blossom. Jasmine, Mongolia and Jacaranda blossoms are signs of spring and also a sign for you to start planting and preparing your bedding. BEDDINGS Remove winter mulch from surrounding perennials or, if you have a well-composted pile, work it into the bedding soil with a garden fork. Loosening the earth allows for better water filtration and better air circulation. Clear away dead leaves or any other debris from the soil surface, giving a fresh foundation to start planting.
PRUNING Spring is the time to trim fruit trees. Try to prune before the buds begin to bloom. Doing so any later will stress the tree and not give you much of a crop. Prune summer-blooming trees and shrubs before they push out new growth. BASIC MAINTENANCE Basic maintenance around your garden is really important to avoid running into problems later - for example during the first heavy rains. Now is a great time to check, clean and repair patios and decks by ensuring that they are sealed properly. Check for loose boards, insect infestations, cracks and that railings are secured. Cracks, blisters, bubbles and peeling paint, especially on exterior walls, can become quite an eyesore. Look out for water stains, moisture and dampness in walls and ceilings. Clear leaves from your rain gutters at least twice a year to avoid water backups that can rust gutters made of sheet metal.

The Devil is in the Details
Whether you’re tackling a project on your own or you’ve appointed a landscaper to help you realise your designer garden dream, these simple details are some of the most important, yet overlooked, aspects to making your garden a success.
Lighting
your garden as well as being a feature in and of itself.
The first of these aspects, and the one that usually gets cut from the project first, is lighting. This is usually because of cost, and it can get really expensive, especially when the landscape is lit up like a Christmas tree.
We love using edging in the 200 x 200mm size range as it makes more of a statement than the usual 100 x 100mm one seen in everyone else’s gardens. For a more seamless edge we like using steel edging that hides away pretty effectively.
The key to great landscape lighting is subtlety. Less is more when it comes to lighting. Focus on highlighting (wink, wink) key feature pots, statues, architectural details, water features and/or trees.
Edging After lighting, we find that so many gardens don’t make use of garden edging. We’ve seen countless gardens with the same problem. Where the edge has been chipped away to trim the lawn, the flower bed has migrated many meters into the lawn from its original position and the original shape of the bed has become some sort of an obscure shape snaking around the entire garden, only half of which having any plants in it. Edging is not only important to prevent the above, but it is instrumental in defining the overall design of
Irrigation Planning Selecting the correct type of irrigation, angle and radius of coverage for the specific area are the first things to consider. Avoid having the irrigation spray against walls, because this has the potential to cause damp and water damage problems. Then determine coverage. A good guideline to follow is to have the radius of one sprinkler cover all the way to the head of the next sprinkler. It’s best to hire an irrigation specialist to get this done properly. There are a number of other things to consider like water pressure, flow rate etc., but at least you’ll have some very basic info on your side to help.
A “Boma-fide” South African Experience

Fire pits, more affectionately referred to as bomas, are a quintessential part of South African gatherings. They conjure up images of African sunsets with beers and cocktails, a roaring fire and heaps of laughter late into the night. I would say that about two thirds of briefs given to us by our clients include a fire pit area in some shape or form, which we don’t mind, as we love designing them and having a hand in our client’s future experiences.
Design Decisions
When deciding on what kind of boma you want, it all depends on what goes best with the design and theme of your home and your lifestyle. Then we must consider the position of the fire pit area in your garden. Ideally, it should be very close to your general outdoor entertainment area. If it is put too far or hidden in an obscure spot, the reality is that it won’t be used all that often.
Budget
This is probably the most important aspect in determining how big and complicated you can go, as construction costs can add up quickly. Once you have determined your budget, then we can determine what we can do, but don’t let the cost put you off either. You can still create a beautiful and inviting space with a tight budget.
Style One of my personal favourite styles is that of a gravel area, with or without flagstones, a constructed or freestanding fire pit and loose furniture positioned in a lush section of the garden. This allows an enormous amount of flexibility when it comes to adding to the area and how you, your family and guests interact with the space. This style is also generally more cost effective. If you do have a bigger budget, consider more constructed elements such as having it sunken, more complicated lighting and even having a gas fire as opposed to a wood one. The options are virtually limitless when it comes to fire pit areas, and so is the amount of enjoyment we can get from them. However, a poorly planned one can be disastrous, so we recommend seeking professional advice from a reputable designer or architect so that you can get the most out of your beautiful boma.
