On a sunny Southwest Florida day at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club, water-skiers test their skills on the 700-acre freshwater lake, kayakers paddle across the clear blue water and children play on three miles of white sand beach. You will find residents relaxing in the private beach cabanas, gazing at the lake over the infinity-edge swimming pool, attending a fitness class or having a luxurious treatment at the full-service European-style spa. Golfers work to beat their personal best on Southwest Florida’s only Arthur Hills “Signature” championship golf course while tennis enthusiasts hone their strategy on the courts. As the sun sets, the waterfront comes to life with friends gathering for any number of social activities in this one-of-a-kind community. 700 Acre Lake | 3 Miles of White Sand Beach | Boating Water Skiing | Kayaking | 2 Marinas | Tennis | Bocce Courts Fitness | Wellness Spa | Signature Championship Golf 3 Restaurants | Dynamic Social Scene

VISIONARY design

CONTEMPORARY REDEFINED IN CAPE CORAL

FLORIDA HOME & DESIGN

Vision, invention, and extreme dedication built what is arguably one of the most innovative and unique contemporary homes on Florida’s West Coast. The realization required the perfect synergy of client, design professionals, and builder. “Much of what you see in this home is the product of vivid imagination,” explains K2 Design Group president and design principal Jenny Provost, “But imagining it and getting it into bricks and mortar on the job site— that is something that requires a truly dynamic team.” The client had been renting an existing home on the magnificent wide-water lot in Cape Coral, Florida. After searching for the perfect property to build his dream home, he decided instead to purchase the rental home and tear it down, allowing him to keep the view he loved. With roots in South Africa where modern, contemporary architecture is prevalent, he enlisted friend, builder, and fellow South Africa native Lionel Wilson of Modern Homes International to build his modern mirage. “I’ve built modern but never anything to this degree, so the creativity of what came through building this home was probably the biggest challenge I’ve ever had or ever will have. I’m referring to everything from the materials we used to the electrical, lighting, ceiling detail, and innovative design,” says Wilson. The framework for the floor plan was crafted through on-site meetings between the homeowner and residential designer Richard Guzman of R.G. Designs. “When I met the client he showed me where he wanted his sofa to be situated to take advantage of the water view. Our goal was to eliminate any support columns that would obstruct the view, and to capitalize on that view from nearly every room. Across the back of the house we designed and engineered a 50-foot expanse with an uninterrupted vista.” u

Right: The great room reveals the spectacular view through the pocketing 12-foot tall electronic sliding glass doors. The laminated walnut staircase envisioned by Provost and crafted in Wilson’s workshop, angles around the custom-built glass, quartz, and stainless steel elevator. The fireplace surround is solid quartz with quarter-cut walnut panels and floating shelves. The ceiling detail, also conceived by Provost, ties the room together with the same walnut panels. A Minotti sofa complemented by Gyform chairs creates a comfortable seating area atop the Kravet area rug.

Glass and aluminum handrails from Florida Glass & Aluminum line the open second story hallway leading to the guest bedrooms, exercise room, and office. The white Artemide light fixture spirals downward, softening the wood-beamed ceiling. A morning bar at the end of the hall serves guest bedrooms and the upstairs office.

Right: The kitchen blends pure white with the strong warmth of the quarter-cut walnut panels. K2 Design Group drafted, engineered, and installed the Irpinia cabinetry throughout. Effervescent Sonneman light fixtures float above the glass countertops. Miele stainless steel appliances blend with the sleek design. At left, the bar area design replicates the tornado-shaped leg of the kitchen island. Above the bar a porthole reveals a salt water aquarium which mimics the weather and water temperatures in South Africa.

Pianca cabinetry with floating shelves provides storage for totes and handbags, while drawers secret garments and softer accessories. At center, a rolling island provides jewelry storage and additional drawer space. A masculine steel staircase with glass rail by Florida Glass & Aluminum leads to the second level of the his-and-her space.

skill in execution, as well as a bit of good fortune. “When you are creating something for the first time, all that planning and putting it together can be for nothing if it doesn’t work,” Provost explains. According to Wilson, many of the subcontractors were also learning new techniques or creating methods to execute the visionary design. “This is what we love to do. At the end of the day, what resulted was uncompromising quality—nothing was sacrificed.” u

35

Above: The home office is equipped with a conference space, audio-visual capability, and a large balcony overlooking the water. The conference table and cabinetry were designed and crafted through K2, as was the wall cladding. Picking up the lighter element of the ceiling cladding, Provost used sand-colored leather Polflex boardroom chairs and a Desede desk chair. In this room and throughout the home, residential designer Guzman says much of the innovation is in what isn’t visible, “The lighting system capability, the way all of the mechanical equipment is hidden, the structural engineering—all of this adds to the overall uniqueness of design.”

36

FLORIDA HOME & DESIGN

“I’m really proud of this project and the entire team that worked on it,” notes Provost. “This was a very complicated project with a client who pushed the limits. The client was the catalyst for making this as extreme as it became, and as exceptional as it turned out. It required us to work harder and think more cleverly.” n

Above: The stepped theater features acoustic-rated wall covering and electronic room darkening drapery by Statewide Window Treatments. Provost combined custom two-toned luxury leather chairs and a sofa with the high-gloss quarter cut paneled walls for a rich, warm feel. The electronics and audio equipment are hidden behind flush-finish panels at the front of the room.

Left: The unique design of the home and infinity-edge pool follow the curve of the property. The design coupled with the ceiling elements give a distinct “cruiseship” feel to the outdoor space. A fire pit creates a warm ambiance for the poolside bar. On the covered upper level, Wilson added a new porch cooling system to the outdoor design. Twenty-two “eyeballs” installed in the ceiling, spray a high velocity mist which cools the ambient temperature up to 18-degrees. The upper deck includes a dining table, conversation seating, and an outside bar that mimics the same tornado-shaped leg design as seen in the kitchen.

BEHIND THE STORY

BEHIND THE STORY

K2 DESIGN GROUP

C

EO & Design Principal, Jenny Provost says, “many years ago, I dreamed about creating an integrated design company that prides itself on leading innovation through fearless design. In 1985, I formed a company with two architects in Montreal where we designed and built luxury residential projects in what I believe was the only fully integrated company in the area and included a full kitchen and bath showroom. I searched for the same type of integrated services we had provided in Montreal upon my return to Southwest Florida in 1993, but there was nothing. In 1994, K2 Design was born and K2 Kitchens followed in 2016. Some might call us a one-stop shop but that’s a lightweight moniker for the real work that goes on. From site planning, architecture, lighting design, interior design, kitchen and bath design, project management and a full size kitchen and bath interior design showroom, K2 Design sets the standard for its global clients.” Call to schedule a free consultation. COASTAL STYLE ON LONGBOAT KEY

Calling it “calming and exciting at the same time,” Longboat Key residents Keith and Kristie Harrison loved living on the water, so much so that when a vacant lot with both canal and bay frontage became available, they seized the opportunity to build a new home on it, in concert with John Cannon Homes. The designbuild firm has completed over 370 custom waterfront homes during its 30 years in business, each with its own particular set of requirements and goals. Below: A wall of windows in this sitting area commands a view of the bay. Tempus Pro Services completed the audio-visual in the home including a TV which rises from the custom-built, wood-top bar. Harrison created what she jokingly refers to as the world’s largest sofa by combining leather sectionals. A striped, occasional chair and the Palecek Owen seagrass chair from Robb & Stucky round out the seating. Right: Chaises from Jonathan Adler invite lounging by the fire on custom-made pillows from Robb & Stucky, snuggled under raw-linen ombre throws from Mélange Home. Between the chaises is a glass-topped seagrass coffee table. A Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams rectangular cocktail table in acrylic, glass, and polished stainless steel serves the sofa. Drexel Heritage étagères flank the fireplace. The dark wood plank flooring is from Design Works.

“It was very important to maximize every available square foot of allowable building area while respecting how this home’s shadows fall on adjacent properties, all the while taking advantage of the spectacular waterfront views of Sarasota Bay,” John Cannon explains. John Cannon Homes’ design-build approach couples the firm’s professional design expertise with superior construction practices to ensure the finished home is a true reflection of the client’s character and sense of style. The process solicits input from the client along the way, and in this case the team reworked several aspects, which resulted in opening up the main floor to create one room with living, dining, kitchen, and family room areas. “It was the best change we made,” explains homeowner Kristie Harrison, an interior decorator who served as her own client. Kristin Goff, ASID, NCDIQ, of Robb & Stucky International’s Sarasota store, aided Harrison in her search for the perfect furnishings. Heather Weisenborn of Mélange Home Décor sourced seaworthy accessories.

Left: A custom-built dining table with glass top is impervious to water marks and other damage. “That’s a hallmark of mine,” says Harrison, “Topping pieces with glass protects the furniture without distracting from the beauty.” Seating is a combination of upholstered end-chairs, and Stewart seagrass and teak side-chairs, with custom chair pads in Robert Allen’s Grand Chenille fabric from Robb & Stucky. Harrison used slat stock as crown moulding throughout the home to unify the space, and serve as a valance for the window treatments. FLORIDA HOME & DESIGN

“The Coastal style is well-suited for both the neighborhood and the Harrisons’ lifestyle. A balance of new trends, such as the intricately detailed coffered ceilings, with timeless features like the open floor plan keeps this home relevant,” continues Cannon. “A house takes on a personality, and after you start making a few decisions the process gets easier because you let the house tell you what it should look like,” muses Harrison. “You also have to keep in mind how the house will be used. This house will host adults and babies, so

even though most of my furniture pieces are upholstered in white, I used outdoor fabrics wherever I could and I covered most of the case goods with custom glass.” With her love of seashells as inspiration, Harrison chose a soft palette of whites and tans, mingled with grays and blues inspired by the sea to create the coastal ambiance of this waterfront wonderland.

This British West Indies style home with Bahama shutters, wroughtiron balcony rails, cypress brackets, and terraces creates a strong tropical feel. “The client wanted a really timeless, classical look. Natural materials say a lot about the quality of construction and longevity. The cladding is a shell-stone, notes architect John Cooney.

Designed as both a showcase for a personal art collection and a comfortably elegant retreat, this waterfront home captures the classical elegance of the British West Indies-inspired style. A palm-lined motor court sets a grand tone, leading to the front door of this stately home, situated on a generous one-and-a-half-acre lot. Inside, the 8,314-square-foot residence includes four bedrooms, five full baths, and multiple living areas. Views of the waterway can be captured from each room and from the multiple balconies on both the front and rear exteriors. John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, artfully incorporated elements of an art gallery in his design, complete with dimensional space for sculpture, focal point niches, and ample wall space. Cooney coordinated with the designer and artists to showcase the owner’s existing collection along with additional works commissioned during the project. Interior designer Sherri DuPont of Collins & DuPont Design Group notes the important interplay between the art collection and property design in this twostory masterpiece. “The clients worked with their favorite artists to create distinct pieces to enhance specific areas,” remarks DuPont, adding, “Every piece of art was inspirational for each setting.” u

Left: The team’s efforts resulted in perfectly-fitted recessed niches for major pieces of art, such as the one chosen to hang above the fireplace in the living room. “Hands down, the Chagall is the focal point in this room. The fireplace was designed to showcase this piece,” says DuPont. Two matching Henry Royer cocktail tables sit side-by-side on a custom handtufted wool/silk Axis area rug from Tai Ping, bringing a modern Asian aesthetic. A pair of J. Robert Scott L’Envol slipper chairs and two matching upholstered wood frame chairs face the cocktail tables, flanked by Swaim custom tapered consoles.

FLORIDA HOME & DESIGN

To capture a sophisticated gallery-feel, the team used classic millwork throughout the home. Cooney explains, “Every ceiling was intricately designed. The walls feature panels and extensive wainscoting. Both quantity and quality of details were very important to this house.” Builder Mark Smith of Harwick Homes says of the finished product, “It was a real joy to step back and see the client appreciate the finished trim and interior. It’s the details which make the core of the home something special. From the wood flooring to the stone cladding on the exterior, the home is stunning.” n

The design team reconfigured the coffer with a light shelf to enhance the John Pomp Studios’ Spun Thread Cluster pendants, created with hand blown glass crystal and molten glass threading. The brilliant colors in the mixed-media glass collage triptych by Diana Ahrens serve as a muse for the rest of the house. The carefully selected furnishings include upholstered Baker, Knapp and Tubbs Abrazo side chairs surrounding a walnut-finished dining table.

Offering a bit of a whimsy, the Osborne & Little drapery in the master sitting room displays a geometric Normandie pattern with bright accents of magenta and ultramarine. Large windows capture a water view, while tree-stump tables created with silver-leaf over artisan-grade resin add a modern, natural flair, softening the contemporary open-barrel chair clad in bright blue and gray.

Maya Romanoff Ajiro Fanfare Wood Veneer wallpaper in Lux Silver softly repeats the diamond Livorno pattern in the Cowtan & Tout draperies. The brilliant blues, grays, and blacks of a striking three dimensional wall sculpture—part of the homeowner’s personal collection— create a dramatic focal point above the bed.

Right: The elegant master bath enjoys a private view as DuPont explains, “The tub is framed by the window with the garden as a backdrop. All other elements radiate around the tub, which is carved from the same single piece of stone as the flooring to guarantee grain and color match.” The floor is a 24-by-24-inch Calacatta Caldia honed marble, and pairs richly with the Calacatta marble vanities. The graceful lines of white and soft gray Eva tile in the shower echo the curves of the tub. Ritz wall sconces with Hermes cast-glass complement the starburst design of the plated-chrome ceiling-mount fixture accented with ribbed glass balls.

egno Bastone was founded in the late 1800’s by the same family that runs the company to this very day. Over the years, we have optimized and expanded our production process, but we have never abandoned the age-old European traditions of craftmanship when it comes to our floors. We proudly admit that quality means everything to us. There are no greater projects than when we are paralleled by those who feel the same way. This is the reason why Legno Bastone works closely with International designers, architects and builders. Legno Bastone Floors provide for a unique style. That is why our floors are referred to as “Custom Designed Furniture for Your Floor.”

The clients wanted two seemingly divergent feelings in their vacation home on Sarasota’s Harbor Drive—modernity and warmth. But architect Mark Sultana is in the business of realizing people’s visions. “I listen carefully to my clients and give them what they want,” explains Sultana. “I get a good feeling when I am able to design something that delights the clients, and then be invited back months later for the party where they are proudly showing off their new home.” Sultana particularly enjoys working with builder Mike Voigt, whom he has teamed up with on many other projects. “There’s no reinventing the wheel with Mike, who understands what I’m looking for and does the highest quality work,” says Sultana. “I am passionate about exceeding expectations,” agrees Voigt. “My hands-on approach means I am actually on the job site to oversee all of the details during construction.” The third member of this successful team is April White. She served as interior designer on the project for clients living abroad. “Besides a handful of in-person meetings, the majority of the project was done via email,” explains White. “We made sure to use our limited time together very efficiently, making color, fabric, and finish selections. White summed up the project, “The whole thing came together incredibly smoothly.” Right: In the great room, a two-story fireplace wall of 8-by-4-foot custom precast concrete panels hosts a linear gas fireplace. Pacifica Interior Design principal designer and CEO Lou Shafran says the builder desired “a clean, contemporary, ‘wow’ factor home.” Furnishings and decor mingle traditional and modern, for a truly transitional style. “Pacifica’s current philosophy is light and bright. We chose scarlet as our ‘pop’ color, as we hadn’t seen anything in red in a while,” says Mark Vanagas, senior designer. Shafran also notes that so many homes are going white for mass appeal. To mix things up, this unique Naples model home features both white and dark wood walls throughout. The result is a substantially neutral palette. “Our desire was to create a home with wide appeal using colors and textures we’ve used in the past with great success,” says Watt. “We did this with stunning results.” n

Right: The vaulted great room ceiling features dark, inverted, exposed, T-shaped trusses. “They visually anchor the space,” says Shafran of the design. “We didn’t want to put a particular time or style on the home.” Delicate Ralph Lauren ring chandeliers, made of nickel, with Edison-style bulbs, continue the elegant simplicity. As with all the rooms in the home, this one features straight lines and neutral base colors with scarlet accents. “If you don’t like scarlet, you could easily change out the accent pieces and artwork without changing all of the furniture,” Shafran adds. The Century sectional offers a softness and comfort. Lexington white leather and chrome chairs, and a Pacifica custom-designed sofa table complete the seating area. An all-wood, double-pedestal table and upholstered chairs define the dining area. Pacifica also custom-designed the room’s floral centerpieces. At the far end of the room, the kitchen features two wine rooms, one for reds and one for whites, and Tradewind Designs custom cabinets. The front island has a granite waterfall countertop with cabinets on either side, while the rear island serves as a cooking and work space. The refrigerator is Sub-Zero and the cooktop, oven, and dishwasher are all Miele from Monark Premium Appliances.

The approach to the four-car side-entry garage deliberately breaks with the formality of the typical driveway. Pavers in vanilla, caramel and charcoal are broken by meandering borders of natural grass, blurring the lines between landscape and motor court.

Location, location, location—the real estate mantra is brought to life in this home on Doctor’s Bay, an inlet of Venetian Bay in Naples’ Park Shore community. The waterfront residence is an eclectic blend of traditional and modern architecture and design, inviting easy, breezy indoor as well as outdoor living. Architect Falconer Jones describes the style as a “mix of tropical and contemporary, with a few signature design elements such as the unique exterior corner treatments.” Built by Knauf-Koenig Group, the home sits on one-third of an acre with ideal southwest exposure. “As with any KKG home, the uniqueness is evident throughout in the woodworking, custom finishes, and attention to detail,” explains Matt Knauf, CEO, Knauf-Koenig Group. The interior living space includes a great room, a kitchen and gathering room, five en suite bedrooms, an owner’s study, as well as

Bay Design principal, Leslie Sherman, says, “We were given a blank canvas, an opportunity to define the soul of this gorgeous home. The result is a sophisticated, inviting, coastal retreat that does a terrific job of framing the stunning long water views that are the centerpiece of the residence.” The trio of architect, builder, and design team has created numerous homes for the sophisticated Naples buyer. As Jones succinctly puts it, “Over the team’s evolving relationship on many projects, we have created a shorthand to describe our vision, merging the best ideas from each into this home.” “It was a true team effort,” adds Sarah Chapin. “The result is simply fabulous.”

Creating a home reflective of the warm and inviting personalities of its owners led to a design and build experience that the team of seasoned professionals behind this residence characterizes as a favorite. Avid golfers Lisa and Geoff Covert fell in love with the home site overlooking the 12th fairway at Mediterra in Naples, Florida. They sought out Kurtz Homes, based on a stellar reputation over the company’s 35-year history, only to learn that they had purchased the lot right next door to the personal residence of company co-founder Randy Kurtz. “It adds a bit of extra pressure living right next door to your client,” laughs Kurtz. “The good news is that we became terrific friends through the process.” John Cooney, partner at Stofft Cooney Architects, came onboard simultaneously with Kurtz Homes, followed by interior designer Teri Kellam of Kellam Group Interiors. The trio aimed to create a home as hospitable as the clients who brought them together. “This floor plan is one of the most entertainment-based plans I’ve designed. From the exterior to the interior, every design decision was made with guests in mind, entertaining friends and family, and their level of comfort,” says Cooney. “Lisa had a vision for this home.” Throughout the very open concept plan, the architectural elements act as room dividers. Stacked stone columns, ceiling detail, and various flooring treatments are used strategically to delineate the space. The wine room, for instance, is visible from the dining room, club room and living room notes Cooney. u

Custom benches sit in front of the fireplace by Grate Fireplace & Outdoor Living. The table from Swaim ties in with the dark marble fireplace. To the far end, the award-winning custom designed bourbon bar by Carol Ruffino of Ruffino Cabinetry is crafted from walnut. A radius-glass bourbon display case, custom cigar humidor drawer, and the overall detailing create a rich, beautiful masterpiece.

“The use of black walnut was very important to Geoff,” says Kurtz, adding, “We incorporated it into the wine room, the bourbon bar, and clubroom. The wood ceiling cantilevers out over the seating area, helping to define it.” u

“There is a soothing flow to this home, in the floor plan, the lighting, and the furnishings,” says Kellam. “Lisa wanted comfortable, upscale elegance. A neutral color palette of blues and grays with splashes of color achieved this look.” With ample glass in the front and back of the home, the spaces are naturally lit. Each hallway, window, and room was carefully planned to capture interesting vistas from every direction. “As you experience the home, there are natural vistas and strategically created views of fire bowls, sculptures, courtyards, landscape architecture, and the golf course,” remarks Cooney. Kurtz says there was a sense of camaraderie throughout the construction of this home that ultimately yielded an award-winning residence, and a good neighbor. “It starts with the client; this was a fun client,” he adds. “They were very into the architecture and details of what they wanted out of this house. The entire team was very committed to this project.” n

The custom kitchen backsplash in backpainted glass from Builders Glass of Bonita adds a zen feel to balance the dark wood. Double islands of Taj Mahal quartzite create a usable work area and a core space for entertaining. Around the two-tiered game island, Kellam used COM’s Roma Texture Line with acrylic leg chairs by DesignMaster. To the left is a custom-designed coffee bar with glass sides, also by Ruffino. On the right wall, Kellam designed a banquette, adding a soft feature wall and additional seating.

andy Kurtz relocated to Naples 35 years ago. Soon after, the father-son team started their first renovation, and completed the work largely on their own—even donning nail aprons to do the rough and finish carpentry. The quality of their work gained immediate recognition, and today Kurtz’s superlative custom homes are in Naples’ finest communities, including Port Royal, Old Naples, Bay Colony, Mediterra and more. Every Kurtz home is for generations, just the way father and son intended. By focusing on a limited number of builds, the results are true masterpieces cherished by families for years to come. The satisfaction extends to Kurtz employees, many who have been with the team for over 20 years. As for the future, Kurtz Homes is staying in the family. Randy’s daughter and son-inlaw, Carolyn and David Gordon, are now essential to the team—and when grandson Noah Kurtz Gordon is old enough, it might just be four generations. When father and son work together, it’s special. When they build a legacy, it’s truly remarkable.

Architect Don Cooper was charged with designing a tropically-styled house in Palmetto that was simple yet iconic, and created both indoor and outdoor circulation while maximizing views of Florida’s Bradenton River. Cooper knew just where to look for inspiration—the Parlange, a French Colonial plantation house, built in 1754 in Pointe Coupee Parrish, Louisiana. The full wrap-around porch, symmetrical columns, and many graceful nuances supplied much inspiration. “I was able to study how the house had stood the test of time in the tropical weather and make use of the proportions and details which such beautiful historic architecture provides,” says Cooper. “It was like mining for treasure.” Builder Kenneth Keating of Camlin Custom Homes, a friend of the homeowner, even drove on a research trip to visit homes in Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. “I was eager to get the details correct, from the rafters and shutters to the interior and exterior trim, but I also wanted to make use of modern technology. We used Versatex, which looks exactly like wood with none of the problems that wood can present in such a humid environment,” explains Keating. “Working with such talented professionals like Don Cooper and interior designer Susan Hritz was just a joy, and the owners love the finished home,” says Keating. Hritz was delighted to work on a project where she could mix styles, textures, and colors. “I pushed the envelope ever so slightly and created an interior design that is both exactly what the homeowner wanted but is even more beautiful than they could have imagined, says Hritz.” Left: The great room takes its color scheme from the water, sand, and lush landscaping. As the Bermuda-style home is viewed from the new custom-poured shell driveway one would never guess at the extensive redesign and artfully executed renovation which took place. The orientation of the home was changed from the narrow side street to face Gulf Shore Boulevard, a second two-story wing was added on the right, and the triple arches were changed to reveal a new grand entryway.

As you approach this elegant Bermuda-style home, you would never guess that it was once hidden behind a jungle of trees and subtropical shrubbery, obscuring its potential to be a modern family home in one of Naples’ best locations. Looking at it today, it’s also impossible to tell that it has undergone four renovations in its past life because this, the fifth and last renovation, was done with such vision, skill, and care. Home & Design® Magazine’s 2017 Signature

Home has at last been transformed into the modern Old Naples estate it was meant to be. “I was always drawn to the home and I felt it was too important to be torn down,” says developer Kristen Williams of KW Properties. “Living in this area, I knew it was one of the first grand homes built on Gulf Shore Boulevard. I could tell it had great bones, we just needed to revive it, and create a home that fit the needs of the new Naples resident.” u

Left: “This home was about surprise elements for me—from the way a hallway would open into an intimate sitting room, to accent items found throughout, I wanted people to be excited about each new space,” says celebrity designer Lillian August, seen here in a portrait taken in the formal living room by photographer Lorin Klaris. An expertly curated mix of traditional formality and a relaxed lifestyle is apparent. The sleek silhouette of twin Maison sofas pairs with the gold finish of the coffee and side tables offering an ’80s vibe. The art in this room is from August’s Wendover collection, inspired by her love of Florida’s always beautiful sky. The large antique mirror was retrofitted for the home and plays off the arched windows it reflects.

Williams enlisted the talents of architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura and builders Jay Bowerman and Jaider Gonzalez of Big Island Builders. The team set to work designing an additional wing and new entry worthy of the home. “We felt it was important to change the orientation of the entrance to create more curb appeal and to give the home a true Gulf Shore Boulevard address. Also, the original two-story wing made the home feel off balanced,” comments Abad. Armed with a plan for her vision, Williams was thrilled when she was approached by Home & Design with the idea of collaborating with celebrity designer Lillian August to turn the property into a one-of-a-kind show house. “I am such a fan of Lillian’s collections, so I jumped at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with her,” says Williams. u

Steps away from the tranquil aqua waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Asian influence and modern tastes are evident in this threestory beachfront home of contemporary design from architect Bradley John Smith. Although this 7,000-plus-square-foot home, with five bedrooms and six full- and two half-baths was a private commission, it would appeal to many homeowners says builder Brent Whitehead. “Modern design is popular with sophisticated, high-end clientele,” explains Whitehead. “The Asian influence makes it attractive to younger homeowners, as well as those of European descent.” In keeping with traditional Asian design, natural wood and stone were used extensively. Sophisticated natural materials like mahogany, tiger wood, and natural and man-made stone were used in simple ways in the cabinetry, countertops, ceilings, and floors. Working closely with the homeowners, interior designer Debbie Stevens added furnishings, fixtures, and finishes that would weather the beachfront elements while preserving the continuity of the warm, contemporary design. “My goal was to create a simple, clean design using neutral colors accented with architectural elements of wood and stone. I achieved this through multiple-wood ceiling designs, floor inlays, custom doors, and trim details. It’s also important to me to complement the exterior materials and elements by continuing them on the interior in a slightly more refined manner,” notes Stevens. u

Right: An oversized sectional with double chaises custom-designed and covered in Momentum Soho Sapphire velvet, dominates the generously-sized living room. Behind it, a series of five-panel shojistyle sliding doors pocket into the wall. A pair of swivel barrel Lexington Kava chairs in creamy, stain-resistant Crypton fabric completes the seating group. Polished Limra limestone runs up the fireplace wall. Twin mahogany bookcases are connected by a mahogany beam set low on the wall. Backlighting on the splitcoffer ceiling design makes it appear to float. The clever design also conceals motorized sunshades for the western-facing sliding doors.

The table rests on two Bernhardt Argent polished stainless steel bases. Ten arm chairs surround the table. Visible in the corner is the wine room, where treasured bottles rest on racks crafted from a system of cable wires. Designed by Epoch Solutions the bar features high gloss Sapele Pommele Lauriermax cabinetry outfitted with bar sink, Scotsman ice maker, and an under-the-counter refrigerator. The bar top and full backsplash are brilliant blue Vetrazo Cobalt Sky counters made from recycled glass from Skyy Vodka bottles, beer bottles, condiment jars, demolition architectural glass, and aquariums. The gas fireplace does double duty for the parlor, accessed through either of the doors flanking it.

Right: The focus of the kitchen by Epoch Solutions is the center island with its carvedglass waterfall counter-height table. The lightly brushed-finish of the Thinkglass countertop designed by Epoch Solutions resembles waves. LED lighting tucked under the table edge gives the piece an ever-changing glow from within. A wall of Lauriermax lacquered wood cabinetry in Macassar Ebony houses a Thermador gas range with pot filler, and steam and traditional single ovens by WOLF. Miele and Sub-Zero refrigerators are faced with custom doors. Twin Asko dishwashers and a Scotsman ice maker round out the fully equipped kitchen. Above the sink, motorized Roman shades are hidden when fully retracted. A trio of glittering Letizia pendant lamps hangs above the island. Made from Taj Mahal quartzite, the top and apron edges are mitered to give the appearance of a six-inch thick slab. Light from the twin Fine Art Lamps Allegretto wall sconces in silver leaf finish bounces off each of the John Richards mirror-framed, gold-trimmed oversized mirrors. Frameless glass walls and door surround the extra-large shower. Backlit floating walls inlaid with green opal-stone bullet-mosaic from La Casa Tile contain full-body shower sprays. The ceiling by Epoch Solutions is African Sapele mahogany accented by strips of burled-wood. Recessed lights around the ceiling edges give it the appearance of floating, while lights in the panels themselves provide illumination for the room.

Opposite: The foyer exemplifies the fusion of mathematics and nature. One-by-one-inch mother-of-pearl was carefully embedded in two-by-two-inch laser cut pieces of the Turkish Limra white limestone from La Casa Tile which were installed following the Golden Mean proportional design of a Nautilus shell. The metallic powder-coated aluminum stair-rail and spindles echo the curvature. Months of research, samples, and drawings went into the creation of the chandelier, which resulted in the selection of thick Murano glass tiles, assembled into 18 glass tubes. Attached to a three-foot diameter stainless-steel plate, the entire fixture is motorized to descend for maintenance. Carpathian Burl and Carvalho veneers on a planked Sapele from Epoch Solutions crisscross the ceiling in a 3D design, complementing the shape of the room.

“Learning what my clients like and dislike typically guides my design process,” continues Stevens, who has worked with the homeowners before, completing two renovations of their previous home. “In this instance, that included a trip to The Ulmstead Hotel and Spa in Cary, North Carolina. The homeowners had recently visited there and were enamored with the warmth and feel of the interiors. I wanted to get a first-hand feel for the actual elements that made them happy.” n

Left: Serene in shades of silver and gray, the parlor is simply furnished with a plump sectional and a circular ostrich-patterned leather ottoman. A striped cowhide rug anchors the seating group. Above: The lanai runs the entire width of the house, offering multiple possibilities for outdoor living and entertaining. The 36-by-36-inch precast flooring tiles from La Casa Tile are enhanced with embedded bits of shell and stone. Split-faced stacked stone covers the entertainment wall, housing both a fireplace and large screen television. Tongue-and-groove mahogany gleams overhead. Furnishings such as the bar-height mesh and metal dining chairs are impervious to the elements. The vanishing-edge pool features a hidden spa just under the surface of its crystalline waters.

Opposite: The harmony and balance of the Asian contemporary design is evident when the home is viewed from offshore. The symmetrical wings of the top floor and the equal spacing in the alignment of the outdoor areas on the main floor exemplify parity. The simple, low-growing landscaping at the rear of the home allows for an unimpeded view of the Gulf of Mexico beyond the natural shoreline border of grasses and reeds.

“The details are not the details. They make the design.” The words of the late world renowned designer Charles Eames are the essence of this Hickory Beach revival in Bonita Springs, Florida. What began as a renovation to create a modern beach bungalow took on a life of its own—leaving no surface untouched and creating a visual feast. Owners Deb and Greg Petersons’ search from Sarasota to the southern Florida Keys for a home with a view nearly led them to a beachfront condo. But, after considering the inconvenience of high-rise elevator living, they toured this four-story 30-foot wide home with spectacular multi-tiered views of the Gulf. “We looked at this house as it was before and instantly loved the views to the outside,” says owner Deb Peterson. u

The Petersons wanted to capture the views, open the floor plan, and bring in the natural light. They turned to Kevin Claes of Bucklebury Home and West Berkshire Design for the fine architectural details and interior design they desired, and that is when the real transformation began. “With this home being more than twenty-five years old it had its challenges. In remodels of older homes, ceiling height is an issue as we try to create volume. I wanted to push the envelope toward a transitional look while using some traditional elements fitting for the age of the structure. I incorporated this take on modern classic in the octagonal wainscot up the staircase, and in the ceiling detail in the great room, says Kevin. u Right: The great room was transformed from floor to ceiling. Custom wide plank, white oak Madrid hardwood flooring by Legno Bastone Wide Plank Flooring expands the space. Neutral area rugs add texture without distraction. Focusing both on the interiors and outdoor living areas, the project from start to finish added a garage and pool, exercise room, cabana room, all new baths, ample comforts for family and guests, and also designed a penthouse owner’s retreat. The attention to detail in each room highlights the customization and full-service design detail of the Bucklebury brand. “This home has its luxury design in the interior architectural flair, in the bones of the home,” says Kevin, adding, “When so much attention is paid to the lasting finishes, the actual furnishings don’t make the design but instead complement it. They neatly tie it all together.” “We had a vision of what this house could be when we bought it, but this far exceeds what we imagined was possible,” beams Deb Peterson of her newly renovated home, adding, “Now the views on the inside rival the natural beauty on the outside.” n

The glorious and exclusive Longboat Key barrier island on Florida’s West Coast has only 10 miles of beach frontage, so beachfront development is a rarity. The new Infinity Longboat Key condominium, a private enclave of just 11 luxury residences, is a welcome anchor to the island. Designed in the coastal- contemporary style, it’s a mix of modern and traditional styles with large exterior overhangs, clean lines, and abundant floor to ceiling azure windows. The units sit atop four stories of private parking and each lucky owner enjoys endless sight lines. The building’s footprint offered architect Mark Sultana the opportunity to create unusually deep balconies that run the full length of both the Gulf of Mexico and Bay sides, equipped with upscale outdoor kitchens and enough space to host a party on either side. With condominiums that live like single-family homes and unmatched views, every unit was sold long before construction was completed. The Infinity units open from the elevator directly into the foyer, with a great room, kitchen, and owner’s suite on the Gulf side, and additional en suite bedrooms on the Bay side. “It’s all about family,” states Chuck Gile emphatically. “That’s the most important thing,” agrees his wife Georgia. That was the motivation behind the couple’s decision to build a large, family-oriented home when their Naples, Florida condominium proved to be too small to include their two sons and daughters-in-law, and four grandchildren all in one visit. They spent two years looking for the perfect location before falling in love with a homesite overlooking a lake and the golf course. Architect Alberto Abad of New Architectura, Design West interior designers Brooke Meyer and Kelsey Talis, builder Steve Watt, and landscape architect Ed Westwood of GardenBleu Designs comprise the creative team that brought the Giles’ vision to life. “We began with the builder’s Cielo model and customized the design,” explains architect Abad. The result was four bedrooms plus a study and four full baths and one half-bath and a cabana bath artfully arranged in 4,757 square feet of living area. “This is definitely a lifestyle home,” says Abad. “It’s a merger of several styles; it’s clean and bright and has the beginning of modernism.” Designers

Myer explains, “Mixing patterns, scale, and texture is popular nowadays. The European white oak flooring is a lovely example of cerused wood—a technique that brings out the grain. Faux is coming back, in certain aspects. Nail-head trim is in vogue.” The duo designed the built-in display walls flanking the fireplace in the great room. Left: The curve of the steps and the sun shelf are favorite features of Westwood, who designed the pool, terrace, spa, fire table and seating, water pots, swim-up bar, outdoor hardscape and landscape. Noting that this is easily the largest private pool in the community, Westwood says, “It was fun to create. The biggest challenge was to make sure all of these elements felt appropriate for the space, and not like a showroom of outdoor living accessories.” An outdoor kitchen, and dining and living areas are tucked under the lanai. “This family home on Sarasota Bay features a standing seam metal roof, painted shutters, and bungalow rafter-tail details,” states Murray. “The contrast in light colors and darker woods and how the overall mass is broken down into a more human-scale, with breaks in walls, roof lines, and porches give it that distinct British West Indies architectural style.” This is a fully integrated smart home which includes Crestron controlled audio, video, lighting, shading, thermostats, and more, provided by Wicked Smart Homes.

homeowners—a pair of empty-nesters with grown children and grandkids—wished for and more. Interior designer Gail Carlson of Studio G Home collaborated with builder Steve Murray of Murray Homes and architect John Potvin to build the clients’ forever home. With this tried-and-true team, the odds of creating something special were very good. “It all started with finding them the right acreage,” says Murray. “This lot is in a great central location. It’s close to downtown, near good schools, and has navigable water and stunning views.” “Because we’re in the flood zone, we had to raise the home’s elevation,” says Potvin. “We brought the feel and spirit of water inside, starting in the foyer, where you see the raised infinity pool straight out the sliding doors.” Once inside the 5,100-square-foot home, waterfront views are paramount from glass doors and covered balconies. The home is divided into two wings—one with the main living spaces, the other with the master suite. Upstairs are three guest rooms, including a bunkroom with play area on the open landing. “The décor is transitional in style,” says Carlson. “I wanted it to feel sophisticated. There are subtle references to coastal elements throughout the home, but nothing is stereotypical.” u

Whether in pops of blue, or in the cypress paneled and beamed ceilings, or the weathered pine floors, a refined coastal look prevails. But the selected mix of materials and furnishings is timeless for any location. “I like to juxtapose the dark against the light, the textured against the smooth, the coastal against the refined,” notes Carlson. n

Ronna Romney wanted her newly purchased penthouse at Longboat Key Club Bayside to sparkle. And sparkle it does—during the day when the sun shines in, and at night, thanks to spectacular lighting choices. “Lighting, for me, is very important,” she says. “I love to walk out on the terrace and see the rooms lit up. It’s like a jewel in the sky. The chandeliers look like stars falling from heaven.” Romney and her husband, Bruce Kulp, bought the 4,600-square-foot condominium in late 2015. The 20-year-old unit needed major updating and they turned to interior designer Deeia Topp, who had worked with them on a previous Florida home. “Deeia pulled in the builder, architectural designer, and fine custom cabinet maker, and we had an outstanding team.” The couple’s goal was to create a haven. “We’ve led busy lives and I wanted to walk in and see it as a soft, comforting refuge,” Romney notes. The color palette is designed to be warm and inviting, but a neutral backdrop for their extensive collection of art. “I didn’t want any colors in the house to compete with the natural colors of the grand view.” Architectural designer Rick Arieno, owner of Arieno Custom Home Design, says condos are always a design challenge. “There are things you can’t change, but it’s u

A FLEXIBLE LIFESTYLE DESIGN

FLORIDA HOME & DESIGN

243

A

Architectural designer Paul Fletcher set out to create a model home that any future buyers could easily make their own and that took advantage of beautiful views on whatever type of lot it was built. With The Marquesas, he succeeded in both goals. The home in Bradenton, Florida is situated on a wide preserve-view lot in The Concession, a golf club community, surrounded by 1,200 acres of century-old oaks, towering pines, and protected wetlands. The 4-bedroom, four full- and one half-bath home, with 5,105 square feet under air, was built by Fletcher’s long-time collaborator, Roy Dupuis of Anchor Builders, who terms the style Island Colonial. “The style is less formal than British Colonial and is very popular, especially with those homebuyers looking for a different style from the traditional Florida designs,” says Dupuis. “This type of home works very well on a preserve, golf course, lake, or any lot with a water feature.” “I designed the home with both formal and casual features and made great use of glass windows and doors to maximize the views from many of the rooms,” explains Fletcher, adding, “The home is also perfect for extending hospitality to out-of-town visitors.” “Every bedroom is ensuite and allows the homeowners to entertain a crowd or make use of the private ‘zones’ in the design. I like to suggest the different lifestyles that could be accommodated in this wonderful home,” says Fletcher. Interior designers Diane MacAndrew and Molly Walker envisioned the eventual homeowners relaxing with family and friends when they plotted their design and made use of what they considered the home’s biggest asset—the amount of light that floods the interior. “Your spirits lift and you get a great sense of energy,” says MacAndrew. “We tried our best to capture that in our design,” agrees Walker.

Right: A restful palette of soft blues and grays set the tone for The Marquesas’ interior design. In the living room, the indigo built-ins frame the simple fireplace. Twin streamlined chairs are slipcovered in light denim cotton and the sofa is clad in a warm ivory cotton blend. A Century bench in a patterned indigo allows for extra seating. The Lexington coffee table is polished travertine, and the end tables are of darkstained driftwood. Visual Comfort ice blue porcelain lamps feature parchment shades.
