LITTLE BLACK DRESS

E

Equivalent to the iconic “little black dress,” this contemporary 4,022-square-foot lakefront home is a must-have. It’s stylish, effortless, and timeless… and like its fashion counterpart, once you own it, you can never go wrong. The home, that was originally built as a model, is situated in the upscale golf community The Concession. Brian Johnson, president and CEO of Johnson Homes of West Florida, a family-owned home builder since the 1970s, enlisted interior designer Amy Smith of Designs by Amy Lou for its design and staging, just as he does with all his other projects. Trust, the essential element of any successful relationship, is what keeps them together.

Above: Low profile white leather seating in the living room is glamourized by indulgent black faux chinchilla pillows, and a posh emerald and gold cocktail table. When the weather is nice, a wall-to-wall sliding glass door can be opened to eliminate the barrier between the indoor and outdoor entertaining areas.

The dining room exudes Mid-Century modern flair, complete with a cream shag rug emblematic of the unforgettable design era. Although round, the marble-topped table gives the room an edge; its base, and the antique brass legs of the surrounding swoop chairs complement the intricate contoured lines in the artwork that was flown in from Milan by interior designer Amy Smith. The matte black chandelier is slender enough to not obstruct the view of the spectacular wine closet, powered by JennAir. homeanddesign.net

The smokin’ hot kitchen features floor-to-ceiling white shaker cabinetry and matte white appliances with copper pulls from the CafÊ Distinct by Design line. An urbane set of black leather and brass stools line up along the sleek Arabescato Pompeii Quartz waterfall island, which is smartly accessorized with a brass Moen faucet from Ferguson, Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. A trio of metal teardrop pendants, matte black outside and brass inside, impart high drama, and just beyond the opening, the Fossil Series Triptych by Grace Howl Contemporary Art transforms the hallway into a museum gallery. 28

“Brian is really good at letting us have our way with his projects,” jokes Smith. “I have never had him say no to any of our selections. He trusts our vision.” Besides trusting Smith, Johnson also makes it a practice to stay abreast of what’s trending. “We track trends on social media and see what’s popular in the markets that seem to be ahead of ours but are also careful not to miscalculate our own market by being too trendy,” Johnson explains. So, when Smith presented black, and lots of it, to anchor the home’s palette, Johnson went along with it. “We wanted to achieve a modern vibe with drama,” says Smith, stating her case for the walls painted solid black and massive stone slabs she proposed. “I instinctively knew that I wanted black as my base.” The designer’s belief in “letting the house tell her how it wants to look” never fails her. “I tend to let the home ‘speak’ to me,” she says. “If you try to coerce it or force things to fit that really don’t, you end up with a hodgepodge of items that tell no story.” Guided by the white walls, recessed lighting, and clean architectural details, Smith sensed exactly what she needed to add: furniture pieces that would be both chic and enduring, brass finishes throughout for the decorative lighting, hardware, and even appliances, and style-savvy accents like animal prints and rich jewel tones. “It just kind of morphed into this trendy New York vibe without me even trying,” she says. u

Above: Tall mahogany doors stained dark walnut, with over seven feet of glass, open to a stylish entry. A charcoal-colored antique-washed silk rug lays atop naturally aged white oak floors. An understated console features a high gloss lacquered top and shiny gold base fashioned into a Greek key motif. The collage of blackened brass decorative mirrors complements the cubed chandelier from Bee Ridge Lighting that hangs above the space. Left: In a concentrated effort to bring impeccable style to the study, Smith chose a delicate black metal etagere and hung a stunning black, white, and gold abstract artwork above it. A pair of deep-seated Mid-Century modern lounge chairs swathed in a veiny velvet fabric sit before a solid glass waterfall desk. That, and the three-blade aerodynamic ceiling fan from Bee Ridge Lighting, take minimalism to the outer limit.

Above Left: Easily mistaken for the lobby of a chic boutique hotel, the master bedroom sitting area features a glam pair of gold-tone barrel chairs done in emerald velvet and accented by sexy cheetah-print pillows. Statement-making, nine-foot travelers palms in black clay pots from International Design Source stand in each corner, and a boxed starburst chandelier dangles overhead. Above Right: The master bedroom’s Lucite four-poster canopy bed is fashioned with patterns including velvet cheetah print, African mudcloth, and a banana leaf motif reminiscent of the Beverly Hills Hotel — a favorite of the Mid-Century glitterati. High-gloss white Art Deco nightstands and two emerald “alligator skin” lamps sit in front of massive gold mirrors that draw the eye upwards. A sculptural, Cubist black credenza adds dimension, and not to be outdone, the black and white geometric patterned wool rug refuses to lay low.

30

homeanddesign.net

The ironic thing about staging: you never want it to look “staged.” Smith achieves this with her designs by giving each room its own character and uniqueness. To do so, she asks herself the following questions: Who would live in this room? What would they want to do here? How would they want to feel? Imagining the future residents helps Smith give the feeling of “real life” to a home, even if it’s yet to be inhabited. “When you take the answers to those questions and then put them together like a puzzle, you have the perfect mix of design,” she concludes. Johnson, too, has a few magic tricks of his own. “I did about 40 mini LED puck lights in the ceilings to accent the rooms,” he says. “I’ve seen this before in pictures and love how it emulates stars in the sky.” n

Above and Left: It’s no-holds-barred panache in the master bath, where the walls and floors are treated to the ultimate: Calacatta Oro marble, grouted with sparkly gold. The floating slab of black Cosmic quartz, a focal point Smith was very excited to create, imparts a trendy, color-blocking vibe in the “insanely large” shower. The stand-alone tub has an appropriately modern silhouette, and the “Sputnik-style,” 24-light chandelier from Bee Ridge Lighting radiates in brass and intermittent crystal — bringing a quirky, Mid-Century modern personality to the room.

homeanddesign.net

33

Above: Smith retrofitted the black European two-door cabinet with a white acrylic front to embrace Grace Howl Contemporary Art’s kinetic Vortex art hanging above it. And in the bath, she selected a black and white Moroccan tile to add extra character to the space. Right: Visitors will find their guest room irresistibly alluring now that Smith has made it her own; she removed the headboard from the white linen and stainless platform bed and replaced it with a flirtatious, pop art image of Three Ladies from Rugs As Art. Slender side tables — gold pedestals with chunky square bases — are a funky substitute for traditional nightstands. A silky, marbleized duvet cover is juxtaposed by geometric black and white, and solid gold accent pillows, and the Glyph rug — also from Rugs As Art — introduces unexpected pops of fuchsia, yellow, and periwinkle to the room.

Above: Clean lines characterize the contemporary exterior. Iron corbels custom-designed by Johnson support the roof and its chocolate-brown concrete tiles. White stucco in a shiplap-like design brightens the home’s façade. The contrasting light and dark finishes of the exterior are indicative of the sophisticated scheme that lies within.

Above: The massive pocketing sliders, a result of Johnson’s brilliant construction, make the lanai a veritable continuation of the interior. To appoint it in comparably high style, Smith repeats the black and white color scheme with a geometric rug and furnishings of black rope-loomed shells with white cushions. The tongue-and-groove ceiling is constructed of cypress stained in a finished called Boudreaux, which unexpectedly, runs down the range hood of the “fully loaded” outdoor kitchen. In the living room beyond, Smith’s “perfect black,” Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black, coats the swanky great room’s entire focal wall. The built-in fireplace is adorned with crystals and lights up in alternating jewel-tone colors for incomparable drama. On either side is a mini bar clad with antiqued glass tiles in lieu of the anticipated mirrors.

The root of design is the BOLD showing of truth. People make a living in design copying the IMAGE of truth instead of understanding the formula that develops it. It is from this awareness where innovation is sparked.

Comedically placed, almost protecting specific areas of the home, one can find original KAWS sculptures guarding the wine room, screening room, and perhaps sharing a joke in the great room. “It’s theatre, and we create the stage,” says interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz referencing how he creates a design experience to be felt, rather than only seen.

Above: “The countertop is Sequoia Brown and it almost looks like wood with its texture. It went through a wire brush technique that takes out the softer material leaving behind the higher, dense material giving the wood-like texture. The coloring and seamlessness also make it look like one extraordinary, single piece of Redwood, describes residential designer Jeremy Strong.

Welcome to this penthouse filled with whimsy and unexpected details. Sip your aperitivo and whet your appetite for exquisite design filled with illusions and stravagante. “This residence was a 14-month build out on the 19th floor. The homeowner purchased two penthouses, so we took out the firewall making the one unit 6,700 square feet,” explains Joe Menna of Cabex Construction.

The architecture and layout of the penthouse has an Italian courtyard theme, as if several buildings are stacked next to each other where each surface is unique in texture and color. The main hallway in the unit acts as a street in this al fresco design and branches off to the different rooms in the house. u

The owner’s contributions to the décor and design were vital say the builder and architect. And she knew her mind. She wanted a “timeless” home—one in which accessories could be interchangeable. “I chose grays and white and relied on a variety of textures for interest and definition,” she says. From the 12 ft chandelier in the foyer to each of the furnishings, the home bears her imprint.

“This client knows a lot of people in town, so we were very fortunate to get this project. We worked hard to do so — it was almost a year’s worth of design, one-on-one with the homeowner to design the whole thing,” adds residential designer Jeremy Strong of Cabex Construction. This homeowner’s extensive art collection is on display in every room. The great room features two large wood-carved statues by one of the most popular living artists today, KAWS. Known for his satire and repeated use of iconic characters with double X’s for eyes, KAWS uses provocative poses spoofing mostly wholesome figures, such as Mickey Mouse. Comedically placed, almost protecting specific areas of the home, one can find these statues guarding the wine room and screening room as well as possibly sharing a joke in the great room. u

This type of whimsy, using parodies and sensual art, evokes a feeling beyond traditional interior design. Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, interior designer and principal of BNO Design, tells the story of the homeowner’s life. “I began this project, much like with my other projects, with a theme; the theme can be a poem, a picture, or artwork. It all must tell a story,” Noriga-Ortiz says with grace and appreciation, describing his own masterpiece. This story begins when you enter the unit through the kitchen, since as Noriega-Ortiz says, “That’s where we all go anyway!” In agreement, Strong adds: “The client wanted an open concept and modern kitchen without being ultra-modern or cold. So, we used natural products that would give warmth and texture. The entire back wall is textured marble. All the cabinet doors are Servo-Drive. You just touch them and they open by themselves. Touch a button, and they close.” u

Left and Below: Cloaked in sensuality, the screen room is draped in cherry-red velvet. You can’t see it here, but long, black feathers densely dress the theater’s back wall from floor to ceiling. More of the client’s extensive artwork collection is displayed with a pair of sculptures flanking the television. Two original, iconic KAWS spoof art Mickey Mouse statues “guard” the entrance to the room.

Right: This master bedroom might be the cat’s meow but the Barrel of Monkeys chain on the custom-designed chandelier should take credit as the most hidden gem. Draperies behind the vanity conceal a glass window to the spectacular tub. This en suite, complete with private balcony, features an incredible panoramic view. Lutron motorized shades from Wicked Smart Homes can be lowered to block early morning sunlight. Left: This Italian Garden theme is not complete without the master bath’s exquisite Flower Tub. Created by glass artisans, this smooth, lightweight fiberglass tub is available in five exterior finishes: black, red, white, and silver or gold leaf. The tub is located inside the shower on a raised glass tile floor and has an unobstructed view through the terrace.

A thick Cristallo Quartzite countertop vanity engineered by Cabex Construction and wall-mounted toilet look heavy and yet float weightlessly above the floor. Right: Aptly named, “The Man Cave doubles as a smoking room, equipped with its own HVAC system. The floor is layered with another collection: around twenty antique, hand-made rugs, accumulated from around the world. Floor-to-ceiling windows flank the custom-made wood door and pediment and support the old-world, Italian garden theme.

54

To conceal the necessary yet unsightly components of HVAC and sprinklers, beams are perfectly placed, since “the locations can ruin the illusion” as Noriega-Ortiz explains. The great room’s pink sofa is much like a bright garden flower, and the custom-dyed feathers on the dining room chandelier add to the outdoor motif. With all the trickery of how to open doors, hiding cooling and safety elements, a wine cellar-guarding mouse, is this just a penthouse or truly a fun house? u homeanddesign.net

55

With conviction, Strong concludes: “I design from a functional mindset. I work backwards from how the client utilizes the room, and from there we can make anything look aesthetically pleasing. If the space doesn’t function for the client, then it’s not a truly successful design.” n

Below and Right: Spectacular views of Sarasota Bay, Bird Key, and John Ringling Causeway — which is colorfully lit at night — can be seen from inside the home and enjoyed from the balconies. Interior designer Ed Biggs had the valance — which hides motorized shades — made and painted to blend into the surrounding walls so as not to take away from the view. homeanddesign.net

Designer Ed Biggs is not a man afraid to speak his mind. When it came to his first visit to the site of a proposed condo renovation, the words he used were “vanilla” and “generic,” and those were some of the kinder descriptions. “I walked through the condo with the new homeowners and I saw a very dated look overall, with five different types of floor treatments with an ugly floor medallion right in the middle, a brown marble master bath, and builder-grade cabinetry,” says Biggs, owner of Biggs Design Group. But the biggest sin in Biggs’ book was the lack of a view. “The kitchen, particularly, cut off the sweeping view over Tampa Bay and down to the Skyway Bridge,” he says. “I knew we had to remedy that problem immediately.” u

Below: The wine room, usually furnished as a chat area, is here shown as it was for a party the homeowners held after the renovation was completed. The guests of honor were all the contractors, subcontractors, and artisans who had worked on the home, and the baby grand piano was rented for that evening. Underneath it is a geometric velvet upholstered bench by Chaddock.

66

Biggs also had to find plenty of space for the couple’s art collection and encouraged them to buy other pieces they loved, no matter if they thought what they chose would suit their new seasonal home or not. “I told them of a T-shirt I had years ago that read: Good art doesn’t have to match your sofa,” says Biggs. The homeowners took him at his word and even bought a quadriptych they found while sailing in Antigua. Their boat captain built a crate for the art so it could sail home with them to Connecticut, eventually finding its perfect home on the wall of their new dining room. u

Above: Faced with the problem of hanging artwork on a curved wall, Biggs made the wall itself the art. Sarasota’s The Shower Shop created ¾-inch strips of colored glass affixed to a lightbox. The curve of the installation echoes the round ceiling detail, highlighted by a Recoil chandelier from Corbett Lighting. The entry doors were originally designed to be glass to afford immediate views of Tampa Bay, but were replaced by commercial doors — painted a shimmering metallic — with contemporary commercial handles selected by Biggs. Right: Warm white walls host contemporary artwork in the gallery hallway. Portrait lighting illuminates the paintings and reflects softly off the large-format porcelain tile floor from SRQ Modern in Sarasota.

Above: The countertops around the perimeter of the kitchen are a lighter colored quartz for contrast, and custom cabinetry above is fronted both by acrylic and glass. Underneath, the cabinets feature stainless steel pulls, set with alternating left or right handle openings. Outlets are set into the bottom of cabinets, so as not to break the sightline. Above Right: The white quartz island, previously a wall separating the living room and kitchen, now functions as a dine-in kitchen island. The main island, now four times the size of the original, is a darker quartz, with a vegetable sink, two refrigerated produce drawers, a prep sink with Hansgrohe faucet, and a lighted niche showcasing glass art by a local artist.

68

Biggs joined the couple on antique hunting trips in Connecticut to find vintage artifacts to bring warmth to the space. The designer kept most of the backgrounds neutral, allowing touches of color to be introduced by the art — such as the blown glass by local St. Pete artists, in the living room and kitchen island niche. Biggs even found himself using a bit of his own artistic expression by designing architectural details to overcome some of the challenges he faced, due to unchangeable elements from the existing floor plan. “I asked the builder, Bill Konecy, to assemble what I call ‘clouds’ to cover the existing lighting in the ceiling, allowing me to move things to where I needed them without having to resort to using a big, heavy plate for camouflage,” says Biggs. u homeanddesign.net

“It is in the nature of existing condominium buildings that the ceiling in one unit is the floor of the unit above you, so we had to be careful and respectful of other tenants and the building management,” says builder Bill Konecy, vice president of Brenneman Building Company. “We needed to solve the problem, while complementing what was already there,” explains Chris Westberry, Brenneman Building Company’s other vice president. Besides taking down the wall between the kitchen and the living room to create a 180-degree view, the builders also upgraded all the surfaces, which had not represented the finest in materials. “The building was finished during the downturn,” Konecy explains. “So this was a great opportunity for us to upgrade everything to the very highest standard.” Out went the marble and in came gorgeous large slabs of porcelain tile. The entire appliance package was upgraded, countertops became elegant quartz, and stunning new cabinetry was installed and up lit to greet the night with a soft glow throughout the space. “We are very sensitive to our customers needs,” says Konecy, “and with 40 years experience, not much throws us for a loop. We find solutions for all challenges.” Though this project has some of those, Biggs and the homeowners were delighted with the outcome of the project. “If you could have seen what the condo looked like before, as opposed to what it looks like now, you would say it is miraculous,” Biggs says with a smile. This 400 Beach Drive condominium was sold by Lisa Siver with Benoot Realty. n

The hot tropical colors of the Lady Liberty painting are echoed in the room’s sitting area. Left: The master bedroom sitting area overlooks the new St. Petersburg Pier. Vibrant blue cotton covers the Venzano chairs, and the ottoman between them is covered in the same fabric as the bed. Here porcelain flooring is run from wall-to-wall, with no grout lines visible and special grooves cut by the master installers from SRQ Modern to ensure proper drainage. Mosaic natural stacked stone covers the wall behind the tub and large-format porcelain tile was used on the shower walls, both supplied and installed by SRQ Modern.

Right: In this guest room, Biggs borrowed an idea from an Italian bed he saw in a design showroom to have a wallto-wall walnut wood slat headboard. The bedding is by Legacy Linens and the colorful accent pillows are by Ryan Studio. Biggs made good use of the owners’ own brass and frosted glass lamps on the nightstands.

Above and Right: Each guest bedroom has its own bath and each has a different design scheme. In this one, Biggs chose the same porcelain wood-look tile that is seen throughout the condo. In the shower, SRQ Modern grooved and installed it so that water will drain properly, and Biggs chose to run it up the middle of the wall eliminating the need to cut the contrasting 16-by13 white porcelain tiles. The vanity features leather and acrylic handles, a Hansgrohe faucet, and a rectangular undermount sink set into a quartz countertop.

Below and Right: Nick Ferguson explains that while the design morphed during the build, the home’s layout did not change. Originally planned as stucco and cast stone, the home’s façade gave way to a Hardie board product that has a cedar shake look without the cedar shake maintenance. Slate-look flat tile roofing complements the traditional look. Customfabricated powder-coated aluminum railings introduce “the x-theme,” repeated throughout the home.

TRADITIONAL VISION & PERSONAL STYLE

N

Nick and Sara Ferguson have moved 10 times, built two homes together, and renovated many others. But their Sandpiper Lane home is Sara’s favorite “to date,” she says with a knowing smile. The couple, a contractor and a real estate agent, took a chance on the property. Originally part of a double lot, it had been on the market for a while and some site work was needed. Nick offers one example, “There was a boat basin that protruded into the canal, creating setback issues. We filled it in and built a new seawall.” “This project might have been a big undertaking for others, but we had the knowledge and the resources to take advantage of a really great piece of property,” adds Sara. u

Aurora hardwood wide-plank flooring in walnut provides a dark contrast to the home’s all-over white. The living room’s sectional and chairs, slipcovered in a washable cotton-linen fabric, surround a glass-topped Blake raffia coffee table from Serena & Lily. The pair of Robb & Stucky green chests flanking the fireplace came from the Fergusons’ previous home and served as inspiration for Sara’s accent color. The oyster shell mirrors from Made Goods bring in a coastal element.

“The neighborhood is a hidden gem, west of the Trail, between downtown and Siesta Key. Nick loves to boat, so being one lot off the bay was a plus. But the real reason this lot was perfect for us,” continues Sara, “is that it’s close to our kids’ schools — we can walk there.” When it came time to design and build their dream home, Sara was clear about what she wanted. “I had a vision, I wanted something you just don’t see in Sarasota — a traditional design with a coastal feel. It had to be cozy and casual for two little girls, yet comfortable and elegant. I wanted a home that didn’t feel like a museum.” u

Above: Because she works mostly from home, Sara needed functional storage. Not wanting to sacrifice style, she presented her cabinet maker with a picture and he brought her vision of a bookcase wall to life. Painted a deep charcoal, it is a foil for the trademark white walls, glossy Phillips | Scott Crawford desk, slipcovered chair, and Dash & Albert’s Glitter Diamond woven rug from International Design Source. The hand-braided Lidor raffia chandelier from Made Goods adds a feathery touch. Left: With a view to the bay, the eat-in kitchen is Sara’s favorite place to sit with her morning coffee. White Chippendale-style chairs of cape lilac mahogany from the Quay collection at Bungalow 5 surround the Stockholm black cerused tabletop mounted on a hammered-metal tulip base. Made Goods’ Silvana classic empire chandelier featuring strands of white shells adds a coastal element. The Serena & Lily South Seas rattan bar cart doubles as a console table.

Some of their clients were curious to see what they would build for themselves and many were surprised with the Fergusons’ design choices, as their last few houses were more contemporary. “This home most closely reflects our personal style,” Sara muses. “But it still has clean lines, and it’s still white!” she laughs. “I can’t remember the last time I didn’t live in a white home. This home is white inside and out and the paint can be touched up over time, whereas color fades, and then you must paint the whole wall.” Sara relied on interior designer Melissa DeMore to “steer me, to keep me on track, on time, and within budget. Hiring a designer actually saves you money!” she declares. Using his employees from NC Ferguson Construction and his regular team of subcontractors, the house took a year to build. “For a house like this, in today’s market, that’s pretty fast,” Nick states. “The typical time frame for a home of this quality is 18 months or more. There are a limited number of subcontractors who can do this caliber of work and that dictates your schedule. I used my guys, the same crew I use on clients’ homes. They are like family.” The 5,000-plus-square-foot home was designed with the ease of construction in mind, in the most cost-effective way possible, leading Nick to remark, “What looks large and complex was really pretty simple as far as building goes. That’s a benefit of having a builder design the home.” n

It’s a favorite spot for Lucy, the Fergusons’ French Bulldog, to curl up. Below Right: Surprising herself, Sara makes great use of the dedicated vanity — a first for her. Resembling earrings, a pair of glitzy Kate Spade sconces flanking the mirror lend femininity to the space. Above: To eliminate the need for bulky storage pieces, Sara commissioned her cabinet maker to build custom closets throughout the home, each room having its own configuration of rods, shelves, and drawers. The vintage desk and bedside chest were repurposed and painted white. The bright accent colors of coral, aqua, and navy were pulled from the Ananas drapery fabric by Matthew Williamson from Osborne & Little and repeated in Dash & Albert’s Aruba Stripe woven cotton rug. Above Left: Originally planned as a mancave/TV room, this space above the garage has an attached bath and a separate stairway. It was built out by NC Ferguson Construction’s carpenter as a true kid space, with “the x-factor” incorporated in the top bunk railing. Beds are dressed in mermaid-themed linens and the alcove glows with light from the Lily chip quartz beaded chandelier by Ro Sham Beaux from Blu Home, softened by sheer drapes in sea glass. Below Left: Unabashedly coastal, fish scale tile and Barbies-as-mermaids artwork add pizzazz to the guest bath. A subtle gray driftwood frame and accessory baskets carry on the theme. Left: Nick used sandblasted marble on the pool deck. A first for his family’s home, the marble gets rave reviews from his clients. On par with travertine, the textured stone remains cool throughout the day. The gentle breeze off the water keeps bugs at bay. Because the pool is within 30 feet of the water line, a pool cage was prohibited, which was fine with Nick, as he prefers a clear, unobstructed view. Right: From the rooftop deck the Fergusons can see North Siesta Key, Lido Key, and downtown Sarasota. The southwest orientation offers expansive sunset views over the bay. Powdercoated aluminum railings repeat “the x-factor” design element.

Right: Accessed from either her office or the main living area, the patio is another of Sara’s favorite coffee spots. The Pacifica all-weather resin wicker furniture in Driftwood from Serena & Lily features white canvas Sunbrella fabric on the cushions. A 100% polypropylene pink and white rug pulls the color from the office artwork onto the patio.

“Strong horizontal lines, shallow-pitched roofs, deep overhangs, horizontal banding of windows, and terraced planes,” is how architect David Wash describes this style. A clever use of terraces and planters soften the grade and “heighten the spatial experience,” he continues. Bright and backlit, the garage door strengthens the design concept. The airy paint color, Aesthetic White by Sherwin-Williams, complements the organic look of the cut-coarse stone in Oyster.

ISLAND BLING homeanddesign.net

107

C

Coastal, beach-y vibes are out — a contemporary take on the Prairie style is in for these homeowners in Holmes Beach. Strong, horizontal lines and terraces anchor both the home and the architecture. Modern taste, colorful art, and a call from the homeowner for bling in each space, inspires the interior design. To build this refreshing style of beach house on Anna Maria Island, the homeowners enlisted builder Dan Gagne of Gagne Construction, to lead the way. Interior designer Gail Carlson Brundage of Studio G Home seamlessly curated the home’s theme while honoring the style drawn by experienced architect, David Wash. u

Above: Fluid shapes and soothing blues in Jill Pumpelly’s artwork merge the calm island atmosphere with this upscale entry. Light sparkles off the crystalline decor atop the angular console table in a natural yukas wood from Studio G Home, blurring the line between the cool and warm colorways. Anchoring this vibrant foyer is oak flooring in Drawbridge, provided by Wade’s Carpet & Interiors.

108

homeanddesign.net

Custom mahogany doors in Benjamin Moore’s Dark Walnut stain open into the artful foyer. Angles, corners, door panels, and railing lines all reinforce the linear design, yet a sculpted arc in the drop ceiling adds surprise, spontaneity, and radiating ambient light. This abstract art piece of billowing cloud-white shapes and vibrant veins of cobalt blue stand out against the crisp Sherwin-Williams’ wall color in Agreeable Gray.

Purposefully placed artwork can be seen through the horizontal glazed-glass panels on the front doors, luring you into the foyer. This space is a brightly lit gallery of contemporary artwork. A custom, cantilevered bench that wraps around the corner leads you to the main living spaces. The kitchen, dining, and living areas create a great room that showcases each space, yet is unified by the repetition of horizontal lines, contemporary furniture, and tasteful bling. The living room, with views of the waterway and pool, opens to the outside for more seating. “The clients wanted to have pops of color in the furnishings, but wanted the majority of the color to come forward in the artwork, says Brundage, who expertly creates a serene backdrop on which the vibrant artwork shines. u

Left: Gray velvet fabrics and the muted hues of the soft area rug set the stage for this living room. Available exclusively through Studio G Home, this coffee table steals the show with an oxidized metal finish base and a bleached-wood-slab veneer overlay. The peacock blue club chairs reflect the pops of color in the vintage artwork and offer a tropical view. Sparkle and bling shine in the polishednickel crystal chandelier all selected by Studio G Home.

This handcrafted iron silver-leaf chandelier in a polished stainless finish is the pinnacle of bling, and has “attitude to spare, says Brundage. The mocha finish and soft white cotton-linen fabric on the dining set rhythmically move the eye across the dining set provided by Studio G Home, and lands your sight on the glowing lit shelves of the bar. The thick back-lit Think Glass countertop of the wet bar is glitzy, rivaling the excitement of the chandelier. 112

homeanddesign.net

A higher ceiling brings drama to this high-gloss, high-functioning, modern kitchen. Considerable thought was dedicated to this space through cabinetry details like: “The top glossy white cabinets sit more forward and proud of the lower two rows,” says Brundage, “and there is a line of LED accent lighting that glows and flows down the face of the bottom-upper cabinets.” Convenient to the kitchen, the dining room displays bling in the form of a wildly ornate chandelier. Horizontal lines in the window frames echo the bar’s shelving, creating another parallel between the exterior and the interior. u

Above: With sleek lines and bright white exotic wood cabinetry, this built-in kitchen blends seamlessly into the architecture. Most of the amenities are purposefully hidden to maintain the modern mood, except the Bosch Benchmark double oven, which is expertly placed to achieve maximum function. Three white glass pendants appear to float from the ceiling illuminating the cantilevered bar and off-white leather bar-height chairs provided by Studio G Home.

The wide-plank wood flooring guides you across the main level to the master suite. The soft, soothing color palette ties in the setting of this island home. Original oxidized artwork on the wall catches the eye, leading one’s gaze to the master bathroom brimming with glamour, and of course, bling! An infusion of colorful artwork, horizontal lines, soft-to-touch furnishings, and a relationship with the landscape through terraces fashions this bling-y, contemporary home. Anna Maria Island has “been discovered,” says Gagne, and with that comes a surge of new ideas on just what a beach house can be. n

114

Left: Strong horizontal lines and surfaces accentuate the thick Caesarstone Blizzard quartz countertop. Its crisp color contrasts the deep tone of the cabinets and veneered wall treatment. Bling is tastefully woven throughout, with the pearlized wall tiles, crystal accents and rhinestones on the hardware, and the glass pendants from Studio G Home. “By layering glass rods at staggered lengths, this classic drum-shape pendant feels both contemporary and welcoming,” says Brundage. Below: “The headboard wall was a natural focal point in this master,” says Brundage, who uses a textural, cork-like wallpaper behind the bed. Studio G Home provides the custom floating nightstands in a glossy taupe finish that anchor the bedroom’s bling — polished nickel and crystal bedside pendants! Sandy hues in the luscious rug tie in the island setting to the room.

Above Left: Seven-and-a-half-inch white oak flooring from Sticks & Stones Flooring is used throughout the home’s living area. A glass railing allows light to shine through from the living room into the stairway and its landing. On the left, a rectangular window gives a glimpse into the innovative space as guests enter the home from downstairs. Above Right: The home — named after its roof — is called the Betonhaus, which means “The Concrete House” in the owner’s native German tongue. A marvel of structural engineering, the roof is only eight inches thick, yet it weighs one million pounds and is supported by pilings sunk 30 feet into the earth. Pillars and beams, tapered like fan blades, prevent the structure from being large and bulky, transforming it instead into something thin and sleek. The rear of the property faces west, affording long views across the water to Longboat Key, and the 60-foot lap pool appears to spill over the edge into Sarasota Bay. A retaining wall was created to avoid erosion beneath the drop-off to the water line.

MINIMALIST MASTERPEICE

O

On an elongated lot, perpendicular to Sarasota Bay, sits a house that is a masterwork in minimalism. According to Designing Buildings Wiki, legendary architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mieus Van der Rohe believed that minimalism condensed the content and form of a design to its bare essentials, thereby revealing the architecture’s true essence. Designed by Mark Sultana of DSDG Architects, this six-bedroom, six-and-a-half bath home totaling 5,850 square feet under air, proves that architecture is indeed art by showing its unfettered essence. The client first asked Sultana to create a coastal design with clean lines and a metal roof. The architect, with the help of the homeowner’s sons, convinced him that the site cried out for a modern design. u

homeanddesign.net

127

“Anyone can design traditional homes, but properly proportioned modern homes present more of a challenge, and I love a challenge,” says Sultana, who has designed more than 30 such homes, in locations from Southwest Florida and New York to Costa Rica. He has also just penned his second book on the subject, DSDG Architects Modern Homes Volume 2. His expertise allows him to pick and choose his projects and he is proud of this one. “I am fortunate enough to have great clients,” says Sultana. “I really enjoyed working with this client to realize his vision and it gives me a great sense of pride to be introduced as his architect.” Equally glad of his affiliation with Sultana is Michael Voigt, president of Voigt Brothers Construction, who has worked on dozens of custom homes over almost two decades with the architect. “We have a great relationship and bounce ideas off each other,” says Voigt. “Mark designs one-of-a-kind homes that are structurally unique, and this makes for a challenging, but enjoyable, experience for us as the build team.” In this instance, the site itself proved to be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, with protected grand oak trees on either side of the site’s access, requiring some maneuvering by all of the large delivery trucks which were vital, as the concrete roof designed for the house required one million pounds of concrete to be poured. u

Right: High-gloss cabinetry in warm white brightens this streamlined kitchen. Channel cuts on the bottom cabinets and motorized touch corners on the upper cabinets eliminate the need for traditional hardware. Countertops are Rugged Concrete Ceasarstone from 301 Granite and Marble and between the Kohler trough sinks with its Brizo brushed stainless faucet from Ferguson, Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, the glass backsplash cleverly hides pop-up outlets, an innovative idea by DSDG interior designer April Balliette so as not to wreck the line of the counter. The island, via a strategic cutout, offers seating on both sides. Above the flush stovetop is an ingenious stainless hood that raises nearer to the ceiling at the push of a button. Wooden pocket doors seal off the kitchen (and any view of cooking chaos) from the adjacent dining and living rooms.

“That weight required extra pilings to be used as part of the foundation. They all had to be connected horizontally below grade, meaning we had to pump water out of the hole 24-hours a day for weeks to complete the foundation and then backfill the hole before we turned the pump off,” Voigt explains. “The entire project was a triumph structurally and a real home run for us,” Voigt continues. “Also, in the end, the client loved it, and that is why we do what we do.” The interiors of the home are courtesy of April Balliette, of the interior design arm of DSDG Architects, who, interestingly enough for an interior designer, chose none of the home’s furnishings. u

Left: Conversation is no doubt sparked at the solid wood dining table adjacent to the great room and art wall (shown on previous spread), affording privacy and shielding the view from the neighbors’ property.

homeanddesign.net

133

“Apart from some pieces he brought from previous homes, all furniture was purchased by the homeowner,” says Balliette. “Since I work with an architectural firm, this isn’t that unusual. Out of the more than 80 homes I have worked on with Mark, I have only furnished 10 of them.” Balliette instead helps choose the flooring, surfaces, cabinetry, plumbing and wall colors or, as she puts it, “Anything you can’t walk away with.” “The client was very invested in keeping things simple and mostly using tone-on-tone colors,” Balliette explains in reference to the owner’s preference for only the subtlest use of color and warm whites or creams over grays. The homeowner was also a man of good and very definite taste. “He attended every design meeting and made his opinions clear. He knew what he wanted,” recalls Balliette. “Once I understood his aesthetic, I was able to help create a true minimalist sanctuary for him.” n

Right: Super high-performance windows, rated to 160-mile per-hour wind gusts, are shaded by an 18-foot overhang, and therefore don’t ever get warm to the touch. Solar panels, a high-efficiency air conditioning unit and LED lighting earned the home a Green LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for energy efficiency. On the home’s right side, Nichiha horizontal concrete siding was used as it performs better than cypress in direct sun and requires no maintenance. Galala limestone from Sticks & Stones Flooring in Sarasota, was used on the pool deck. Below: The upper deck sports a cypress tongue-and-groove ceiling, from which hang Minka Aire fans from Light Up Your Life. A powder-coated aluminum railing encloses the space, which is also accessible by an outdoor staircase from the pool area. This deck, also made of Galala limestone from Sticks & Stones Flooring, offers guests the perfect vantage point for sunset viewing.

Above: Tucked within the luxurious Vineyards neighborhood in the Lake Club at Lakewood Ranch, Stock Development’s Merion floorplan is artfully landscaped and designed with coastal Florida and British West Indies influences in mind. Such an expansive lot requires the utmost attention to scale, so that both the structure and the land exist in perfect harmony. Decorative wood brackets, pre-cast accents, and a rustic trellis detail were added to the roofline, openings, and garage doors, respectively, to bring enhanced interest to the façade. Above Left: Immediately upon entering, the worldliness of the homeowners is evident. The entry is furnished with a raw metal and glasstopped console they purchased abroad and repurposed here from their Brussels home. FUN AND FEARLESS

A

According to an old Latin proverb, fortune favors the bold, and when interior designer Lisa M. Guild, principal of LMG Design Consulting for Pizzazz Interiors (part of the Stock Family of Services), partnered with the intrepid owners of this vibrant 3,054-squarefoot home in the Vineyards neighborhood of the Lake Club at Lakewood Ranch, everyone lucked out. Color is its heart’s-blood, and one sees it pumping throughout. For clients who have had multiple homes in Europe and elsewhere, the liveliness of Florida’s foliage presented a rare opportunity to enlist a nostalgic palette. As Guild relays the tale, the lady of the house loves purple and green, but the passengers of a NYC bus she once rode while wearing a pair of purple pants, lime green blouse and lavender sweater, disagreed, commenting aloud: “Those colors don’t go together,” (as though she’d asked for their opinion)! Unfazed, she thought: “Well, they do to me,” and went about her business. u

Above: The dining room embodies Parisian-chic style with the clients’ existing table and chairs from Roche Bobois. The table’s translucent glass top reveals a deep charcoal Surya area rug from International Design Source. The aesthetic of the framed giclée obtained at Soicher Marin gallery is closer to home. “The colors of lavender, magenta, and gold are reminiscent of a Florida sunset,” notes Guild.

Above: In the great room, the color journey truly begins. On the focal wall, Guild uses a textural black wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries as an inset, while boldly-colored floral paintings from Left Bank Art blossom on either side. An ebony-toned sideboard from International Design Source by Bernhardt is accessorized with shapely green ceramic urns. Taylor King’s upholstered seating features a contrasting velvet stripe in moss green, and the other key shade, the color purple, is represented in the draperies using a Kasmir fabric.

A momentary, but meaningful color pause happens in the predominantly white kitchen, where clean, bright cabinetry is counterbalanced with rich stone surfaces. Sleek armless stools in white leather from International Design Source by Star International provide island-side seating for six. A trio of glittering Hudson Valley pendants illuminates the space.

Turns out, she knew something they didn’t: when secondary colors are used together in design, they can result in a wonderful contrast. And with the bountiful palm trees, hibiscus, and bougainvillea characterizing the region, her beloved hues were even more apropos. “As her design team, we applaud her bravery to live with colors she loves,” says Guild. “She’s no shrinking violet, and we wanted to work with that.” To impart a feeling of cohesion, Guild grounded each space with black and white. “The backdrop of those graphics allowed the other colors to speak up when applied in differing degrees,” says Guild. While she played with varietal tones like aubergine and verdant green, melding the clients’ collected items with their new acquisitions, many of which were sourced from International Design Source, required precision, but was no less inspiring. “We inventoried the items we’d be using and built around them,” says Guild. “We felt the old things elevated the new, and we never shied away from integrating pedigreed pieces.” u

The traditional Lillian August bed is framed by horizontal decorative millwork climbing the headboard wall and is flanked on either side with apple-green-and-white-lacquered Vanguard Furniture nightstands from International Design Source. Overhead, the Hudson Valley chandelier — an asterisk punctuated with silver “candles” — ups the elegance factor. Below: The theatrical master bath is bursting with grape walls featuring a Phillip Jeffries vinyl wallcovering that shows off a “pond” of Global Views lily pad sculptures cascading down towards the soaking tub. A Surya garden stand, with the client’s own miniature purple dish placed on top, perpetuates the bold color scheme. The floors and the ample, open shower are graced with polished marble and tumbled mosaic.

Karla Payes, production manager of South Florida Design, who was tasked with housing all this enthusiasm, quickly got the gist. In addition to satisfying the fundamental desires of the Florida homeowner, she also sought to capture the owners’ carefree spirit of pushing boundaries while exercising tasteful restraint. “We offered minimal but effective accents that catch your eye,” says Payes. “It is a perfect balance of wonder and charm”. The builder concurs. Viewing the finished product, they feel like they know the buyers even better now than when they originally purchased the model home. “I recognize the ‘bones’ but this really demonstrates how our design team can start with our structure and bring about endless possibilities,” says Claudine Leger-Wetzel, vice president of sales and marketing for Stock Development. “The clients utilized our beautiful models for inspiration while adding personal touches to truly make it their own,” contributes Catherine Ferber of Stock Development’s in-house design center. The joyful collaboration where everyone “vibed” is plain to see. “We pushed each other to go further in creating visual depth,” says Guild. “The result is a colorful, cheeky, Euro-modern home that genuinely reflects our clients’ confident, curated taste.” n

The interlocking diamonds on the rug and black and white stripes on the inlaid wood nightstands and console further demonstrate the clients’ daring style mantra: it’s okay to be brave as long as it’s done right. Left: The bonus room is a big perk of the model, and this one is brought to life with navy cabinetry inset with a rainbowcolored abstract paper by Cole & Sons from International Design Source. The black leather chair with slender stainless steel arms by Lexington Home Brands is contemporary in feel, whereas the Surya rug beneath a smoked acrylic cocktail table by Made Goods refers to the Old World. Once again, the designer and her clients refuse to be bound by “rules.”

Above and Right: The home’s location, adjacent to a preserve, was a factor the residential design firm kept at the forefront of the home’s design. “It was important in our design to allow for openness throughout while keeping as much privacy in the lanai as possible,” remarks Payes. Guild stays consistent with her palette right out to the pool area, where the outdoor furnishings are flavored with fruity plum cushions and citron accent pillows. In contrast, the finishes are muted, the fire pit is natural stone, and the deck and spa surround are elegantly appointed with Greystone travertine, delivering the familiar neutral grounding that the designer tends to use as a springboard.

SLEEK SEASIDE DESIGN

D

Desiring a departure from the traditional look of his New Jersey home, the new owner of this Longboat Key condo gave husband-and-wife team Mike and Brittany Cocozza of Trinity Construction and Trinity Design, respectively, free rein over the renovation of the unit. Along with Sarah Tenaglia, her Trinity Design business partner, Brittany honored her client’s request for “something completely different” by presenting a modern design infused with elements of warmth. “We used pieces that give a nod to the coastal location, without screaming ‘Hey! We’re at the beach!’” says Cocozza. “We kept things simple, clean, and streamlined, bringing in some color with rich blue hues. We didn’t want to add anything that would take away from the gulf-to-bay views.” u Above: Chenille-covered sectional and accent chairs provide a comfortable gathering space in the living room. Behind the sectional stands a freeform silver-leafed resin console table from Phillips Collection. The Ava end table from Sunpan’s MIXT collection is sculpted from concrete and overlaid with a marble finish. Balancing the freeform pieces is a structured glass-topped Bernhardt coffee table with a gray-washed wooden base.

Above: Book-matched quartz covers the counters and faces the backsplash in the kitchen. A recessed Wolf cooktop and sleek, glossy cabinets devoid of visual hardware add to the streamlined design. Bottom cabinets push to open, while a finger channel was built into the upper cabinets. A complementary walnut column houses the wall oven, microwave, and built-in espresso machine.

Using Benjamin Moore’s Shoreline, a neutral warm gray, to lend continuity throughout, the duo chose natural wood elements, customized furnishings, original designs, and added a few surprises. “We like to find things that are a little unexpected,” explains Cocozza. n

Above: Subtle tone-on-tone vinyl woven sisal wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries in Dusty Gray covers the dining alcove back wall. A Belmont settee from Pasha Furniture is custom-upholstered in fabric featuring the deep blues and grays of the accent colors used throughout the condo. The custom-made solid wood gray-washed tabletop inlaid with polished oyster shells sits atop a cast stone base from Robert James. The seven chrome-finished arms of the Pinnacle LED chandelier from Craftmade can be moved into different configurations for an ever-changing look. Right: Design Works Sarasota built the bar cabinet Cocozza designed in a high-gloss walnut finish. The back is faced with 12-by-24-inch tiles with a three-dimensional hexagon pattern. It rests on a waterfall base of book-matched quartz housing a wine refrigerator and ice maker. Cocozza explains bookmatching — matching two slabs of stone so that the adjoining surfaces mirror each other, like an open book. “The process takes a skilled fabricator,” she says.

ITALIAN INSPIRATION

A

Aria, the new Neal Signature Homes community in Venice, combines the grandeur of the Old World with the amenities of today. The result is luxury living at its finest. The Italian-inspired community has 152 acres in an exclusive gated environment. The tree-lined streets, residents’ clubhouse, fitness center, and serene spa offer homeowners a truly top-notch lifestyle. Part of the stress-free experience is that prospective owners deal with only one company — Neal Communities — who handle everything from sale and custom building to interior design in-house. Charlene Neal, president of Charlene Neal PureStyle and vice president of design at Neal Communities, shares insight one of their latest models, the Ravenna. u

Above: Solid cream draperies with a contrasting gray textured edge allow plenty of light to flood the expansive great room. A Vanguard sectional in Dove Gray hosts cognac, cream, and orange pillows, and sits atop a hand-loomed Jaipur rug. An Italian advertising poster in the dining room brings a riot of color to the primarily neutral-tone space. Right: Graber Custom Cabinets from FineCraft Custom Cabinetry are painted with Sherwin-Williams Dorian Gray and boast Amerock Champagne brass knobs and pulls. The backsplash, of Old Brick Originals in Ironworks, adds character to the Old World-inspired kitchen. Visitors to the chef find comfortable seating at the painted wicker tub chairs with metal legs by Palacek Furniture. Illuminating the island are Elk Lighting Farmhouse Copper Pulley pendants, and the farmhouse kitchen sink is white enameled cast iron from Kohler with a satin nickel faucet by ROHL Home from the Perrin & Rowe Collection.

Walls are painted PPG Porter Paints’ Delicate White to provide contrast to the burlap wire brushed hickory wood hardwood flooring.

“Neal Communities and Neal Signature Homes have the advantage of being a part of a family of companies,” says Neal, an award-winning interior designer. “We are the developer of our projects and at PureStyle, we have both a retail design business (to the public) and we do all our models.” Working with a team that includes Kathy Cioffi, Neal Communities vice president of design and Amy Schwake, associate designer for Neal Communities, they work on plans, including architectural details, floorplan development, exterior color palettes, model programming, and also do the amenity designs in-house. “We think this is a huge value to our customers,” explains Neal. “We do have talented architects that we use for the initial plans and amenity building, but a lot of the work is a collaboration between our Neal team and a few individuals that we have had a relationship with for years.” u homeanddesign.net

For the Ravenna model, a three-bedroom home with a three-car garage, Neal brought her nearly 40 years of experience to bear on creating a stately and elegant home, designed for entertaining and comfortable living. Like all Aria models, it can be customized with an extra bedroom and different bath configurations. Many of the model’s furnishings are available for sale by Charlene Neal PureStyle. n

Light filters in through custom color-block drapes by Wildcat Territory, and the recessed ceiling sports a textured wall covering by Thibaut. Left: Making beautiful use of geometric patterns in the master bath, the shower walls and floor are made of 12-by-24 Grigio Tattered and Rockwood tile in an offset pattern. A hexagonal wall covering in ochre and gold by Wallquest brings contrasting color to the room. A custom vanity is Shale Truetone with sable glaze and a Corian Quartz Calacatta Natura countertop with a 3-inch mitered square edge. Neal chose a triple light fixture of polished nickel to illuminate the vanity.

GRACE HOWL Utilizing the power of art to communicate, Grace Howl sources her inspiration from within to create contemporary abstract art work unlike anything you’ve seen. When it comes to the artist process, for Grace, it’s really a process of self-discovery. Grace uncovers what she’s painting through the act of painting. “I must let go of fear and inhibition and trust my intuition and imagination to create paintings that are not representative of things we see in our everyday world. It is pure, simple and freeing. For me, abstract art is the most genuine form of ‘expression’ in art,” says Howl. Courtesy of Grace Howl | gracehowlart.com

TALON HOME BUILDERS Talon Home Builders was delighted at the opportunity to remodel a 1926 home in the Old Pasadena neighborhood of St. Petersburg. This beautiful estate home is charming and warm, surrounded by mature oak trees and a nostalgic red brick façade. The homeowners’ creative style and unwavering attention to detail helped to cultivate a stunning result with personal touches that define luxurious living. The inspiration for the new kitchen was generated from a desire to have a window overlooking the sprawling backyard of the property. The space was transformed in to an open concept design for preparing and eating food — perfect for the chef and guests to eat and enjoy time together in continuity. The chef’s new kitchen is equipped with a counter-depth SubZero refrigerator and freezer drawers at the island, which is complete with a prep sink and a faucet as well as plenty of dine-in space. The dual-fuel Ilve professional range was shipped in specially from Italy, and the hand-painted tile backsplash from Tabarka Studio in Arizona bring the look together. Talon Home Builders is both proud and honored to have been a part of this home’s incredible transformation and hopes the next century brings even more happy memories for the homeowners and their redesigned space!
