TRENDY YET TIMELESS 138

Combining current trends and timeless features, this home melds British West Indies architecture with the ever-popular coastal-contemporary style. The exterior’s clean lines are complemented by classic choices: decorative columns, traditional railings, shutters, and corbels. Inside, dark wood mitered box beams dress the great room ceiling in contrast to the light-colored tray and recessed spaces in typical British West Indies style homes, while thoroughly modern touches such as the 60-inch linear gas fireplace in the same room shout “on trend.” Washable fabrics and “no-fuss silks” define the resortstyle living on the interior. “The owners wanted a comfortable house to entertain in, to enjoy with their family and friends,” explains interior designer Stephanie Nolan, owner of Distinctive Interiors. Builder John Cannon and his team captured the client’s vision and presented them with an exquisite, functional home to personalize and enjoy. Nolan built on the foundational work of Barbara Benigni, the clients’ own design liaison from Cannon’s design center to guide them through the myriad choices of finishes and fixtures presented in the building process.

Left: Fixed drapery panels — fashioned from Beacon Hill’s Priyanaka pattern and suspended from brushed nickel medallions — elegantly frame the great room’s lake view. Flanked by ocean-hued abstract art, the sleek gas fireplace features a programmable LED lighting system in its floor and can be controlled with a variable remote control for convenience. Eyecatching Camilla fossilized clamshell tables anchor the seating arrangement and the Blaire console table and pair of Reverie side tables offer sleek surfaces for accessories from International Design Source.

Following her clients’ direction for a “clean look in a kitchen where the architecture and detailing speaks for itself, we found pieces to complement that,” adds Nolan. “We popped in the tray ceiling color — Sherwin-Williams’ Samovar Silver — for a bit of personalization” in the gray and white kitchen with cabinets from Albrecht Cabinets. Vanguard Furniture’s Miles bar stools from International Design Source make it easy for friends and family to gather at the sleek counter. A quartet of Karin pendant lamps from Mitzi bounce light off the glossy finishes and fixtures from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery.

Above: Declaring the dining room “a fun room,” Nolan furnished it with a Germain table in Graphite from Highland House and Brattle Road chairs from Vanguard Furniture. Wanting something “different” for the buffet, Nolan chose Global Views’ Crinkle long cabinet in Nickel from International Design Source. The Gianna chandelier of textured glass panes dangling from concentric silver circles was so perfect for the space, but was originally on backorder. Nolan doesn’t hesitate to exclaim it was “worth the wait!”

Above: Luxurious neutrals and tranquil blues flood the master bedroom. Vanguard Furniture’s Lillet bed — dressed in bedding from Ann Gish and Legacy Linens — rests between twin chests from the same collection, and Shenzhen grasscloth wallcovering accentuates the headboard’s elegant details. A pair of oversized modern wing chairs by Theodore Alexander demonstrate both masculine and feminine qualities with their curves and edges, altogether creating a “very dramatic, restful retreat,” muses Nolan.

Albrecht Cabinets crafted underlit floating cabinets of maple in the clean lines of their Wakefield profile. Stained in the rich Nitefall finish, they hover in stark contrast over the white floor. The MSI quartz countertops were rendered in Antico Cloud, a blend of soft white, taupe, and dark gray. The Sommelier Blanc chandelier from Currey & Company is fashioned from wrought iron and opaque recycled bottle glass and is finished in silver leaf to complete this contemporary-coastal en suite.

Above: “Comfort is key for this room,” states Nolan about the home’s bonus room. Bold artwork from International Design Source and a pair of full-motion brown leather recliners from Universal give the space a masculine air. The Vanguard Furniture Vision sofa sports sliding wooden trays on the arms — a perfect place to rest snacks, remotes, or both! Beside it, Dagmar cubes feature easy-care stone tops so that condensation from ice cold beverages is never a concern.

“Still living primarily in New Jersey, these homeowners wanted coastal colors (grays, blues, and aquas) but not literal depictions of the water; they wanted more of a ‘concept’ of coastal,” Nolan continues. “For example, the artwork is more abstract expressionism than conventional beach scenes.” Upscale but easy-care flooring throughout the home achieves the comfort factor without sacrificing style. Refin Design Industry 10-by-60-inch wood-look tile in Raw Light was used in the highly-trafficked areas of the great room, kitchen, and dining room. Engineered wood flooring in Greystone Hickory warms up the bonus room and study. Challenged by a uniquely-shaped homesite 14 feet narrower in the rear than the front, Cannon and his design team nevertheless crafted a home with an outdoor living area that takes full advantage of its sleek poolside setting. The end result: a trendy yet timeless contemporary-coastal home with a resort-style ambiance inside and out. n
Above: “This home has beautiful dramatic ceiling heights,” says Nolan. “Choosing Marcus Williams Loving fabric in Beet was a wonderful way to bring in the plum color the owners wanted.” As was the Mystique rug from Surya in Eggplant and the Orchid welting on Fairfield’s Kyle lounge chair in Platinum. Shades of gray in paint, paper, furnishings, the built-in cabinets by Albrecht Cabinets, and even in the Regina Andrew Diva chandelier of gray-colored milky glass discs balance the room’s dominant color.

Above: Resin wicker lounges, bar stools, and dining chairs from Sunset West’s Coronado collection; dining, bistro, and side tables from Lexington’s Tommy Bahama Cypress Point Ocean Terrace collection; and glazed garden stools from Emissary all feature performance fabrics and finishes designed to withstand harsh sunshine. Ivory pavers from Artistic’s Shellock Atlantic Series are set in a hopscotch pattern around the pool and form the relaxed-edge coping. Twin arcing water features, a tanning deck, and integrated spa enhance the resort atmosphere of the pool area.

Below: The modern symmetry of the front entry draws the eye inward, where the lakeview can be glimpsed through the “X-factor” — diagonal bronze muntins accenting the windows and front door. The multi-hipped roof, tiled in shades of brown and gray, adds dimension. Metal Bahamian shutters coated in a blue-gray fronting introduce the coastal color scheme. Opposite the three-car garage by D & D Garage Doors, a privacy wall shelters a private garden located just off the master bath.
