It might be essentially a marketing stratagem but there is always something reassuring, even revitalising, about Pantone’s annual announcement of its “Colour of the Year”. To recap… in the recent past we’ve had:

“Classic Blue” (2020) – to “instil calm, confidence and connection, highlighting our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era”. (Some new era that was!)

“Ultimate Gray” and “Illuminating” (2021) – dual colours that year, “practical and rock solid, but at the same time warming and optimistic… a story of colour that encapsulates deeper feelings of thoughtfulness with the promise of something sunny and friendly… We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”

“Very Peri” (2022) – to “help us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives”.

Quite a succinct and illuminating résumé of the past three years… Now, as we enter a new year that we can only hope proves – finally – to be the end of this wild roller-coaster ride of upheaval, Pantone’s creative palette is being accentuated by “Viva Magenta” in 2023.

According to the design community’s pre-eminent colour authority, the hue (officially Pantone 18-17509) “is powerful and empowering… a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying and a boundary-less shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement… (it) welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a colour that is audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all.”

Pretty heady stuff, but there is more. “Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”

Actually, we could all do with a “new narrative”, banishing the old one – whose first chapter back in March 2000 so redefined life for many of us – and foreshadowing a less turbulent period of relative tranquillity in 2023.

That sentiment is also likely to be prevalent at the first major décor and design exhibitions of the year. The annual international showcase begins with Maison & Objet in Paris from 19 to 23 January, with the theme of “engagement and social responsibility”. Next up, from 1 to 5 February, will be Intergift in Madrid, the premier fair in Spain and Portugal for the gifts and decoration sector. Then, rounding out the first two months of the year, the Stockholm Furniture Fair – “the world’s largest platform for Scandinavian design” – will run from 7 to 11 February. Several keynote speakers will be on hand to discuss the subject of “building and designing for a better tomorrow”. Coinciding with the fair, Stockholm Design Week also returns to its traditional date in February (6th to 12th).

Back on the Costa del Sol, we will have our own special celebration in 2023. It will be 50 years ago, on 8 April, that Pablo Picasso died, and celebrations are planned throughout the world to mark that milestone for the Málaga-born maestro. This year is also the 20th anniversary of the Museo Picasso Málaga, which was inaugurated on 27 October 2003.

As we start a new year, we hope all this positivity plays a significant role in your own lives here in southern Spain, and that 2023 brings everyone a reinvigorated sense of optimism and a renewed opportunity to enjoy a fulfilling professional and personal life balance. And please: no more global convulsion.

POSITIVE LIGHT

Light not only affects how we visually experience a space, but it also influences our energy levels, productivity, and even our mental health. However, great lighting is not only reserved for dark nights. Although general lighting may not be necessary during the day, accent lighting can be used to help brighten up a dark corner and help balance daylight and electrical light across your space. As many of us continue to WFH, be sure to pay attention to the task at hand too: cooler blue and white light is good for working and concentration. Unsure? Try lighting up different places in your space and see how you feel. You’ll eventually settle on the right position for you.

Opposite Page Contardi’s Stick collection by Studiopepe was inspired by the simplest of shapes. These lamps start from a basic module with a triangular section – a repeated object, which allows for infinite configurations and always conveys new expressive strength. Available in wall-mounted and pendant versions, these pieces are characterised by a minimal design and interpret lighting in its most artistic and evocative form. Contardi is available through Alison Bethell-Collins Interior Design in Avenida del Mediterráneo, San Pedro de Alcántara (www.alisonbethellcollins.com)

Right Sustainability has been key in the design of the Zile floor lamp by Luceplan. The diffuser is made of a bio-durable polymer which means that if (ever!) discarded it will break down naturally in the environment. Also available as a table lamp, its steel frame comes in four matt finishes: white, black, dove grey and brick red. Luceplan is available from Ges Lighting in C/ Uranio in Pol. Ind. La Ermita in Marbella (www.grupoelectrostocks.com)

Below Designed by Isamu Noguchi for Vitra in the fifties, over 100 different Akari light sculptures are characterised by their weightless luminosity. Each is meticulously crafted by hand in the Ozeki workshop, a traditional family-run company based in Gifu (Japan). For the first step, bamboo rods are stretched across the original wooden forms designed by Noguchi to make the framework that determines the object’s shape. Washi paper, derived from the bark of the mulberry tree, is cut in strips to fit the size and shape of the lamp and then glued to the bamboo ribbing. After the glue has dried, the wooden form is removed and the shade can be folded (www.vitra.com)

Left The Atollo table lamp by Vico Magistretti for Oluce has been gracing the world’s most stylish nightstands since 1977. Atollo is available in three sizes and a choice of white, black, satin bronze or satin gold metal finishes (www.oluce.com).

Below Left Foscarini’s Filo lamp was born from the desire to display the individual parts that go into a lamp – the light source, decoration and electrical wiring. La Ermita in Marbella (www.grupoelectrostocks.com).

OUTDOOR LIVING WITH STYLE

OUTDOOR LIVING ...
28 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2023

Outdoor living plays a key factor in the Mediterranean lifestyle, so furniture for the outside areas is highly important and should be a carefully considered investment when furnishing your home. Making your outdoor space – whether it is a terrace, patio or garden – a comfortable place that you can relax in, the same as for your indoor area, is what will make your home complete. Very often the general design trend stops at the patio door, but this shouldn’t be the case, as there is no reason why there can’t be a continuous flow of the same style to the outdoors. Making the outdoor area loungey and cosy, just like your living room, shows continuity and a strong sense of design integrity. Even through the winter months, we can enjoy our outdoor areas in southern Spain, so wisely choose good-quality furniture that will withstand harsh weather conditions – and get creative. Low blocky sofas and chairs have become a popular trend over the last few years as they are not only comfy but also casual in appearance, making them more welcoming aesthetically. Adding appropriate-sized side tables for resting drinks, plates and devices is a must, as it is so easier to have a table close to where you are sitting rather than having to get up and move when you are in the middle of a conversation. Finally, even in the colder season we are fortunate enough to be blessed with sun, but some shade is always appreciated at certain times of the day – if not to protect you from the heat, from the glare of the sun itself. So, parasols, awnings and pergolas are just some of the many other options to consider in order to make your outdoor area the perfect place to enjoy winter days and nights.

LIVING ROOMS WITH A LITTLE LOVE

The living room has to be a versatile space, not only offering comfort but also showing off your finest design skills to guests who come to visit. The space should accommodate a multitude of elements to make the room work at its best. From seating, tables and storage to textiles and artwork, there’s a lot to consider. If you feel your living room needs a small update, simply changing your coffee table can sometimes make a huge difference as they are usually placed in the centre of where all the action is – therefore receiving a greater focus than you might realise. Adding storage to your living area is a great way to make the room look more organised and easier on the eye. If your living room is short of space, consider tables with built-in storage or wall shelving. The trend for minimalism doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. However, it doesn’t mean that the room has to be cold and bare. The addition of cushions, rugs and throws creates a feeling of cosiness, which every living room needs for a welcoming look. Neutral-coloured rooms are also becoming increasingly popular, evoking a sense of calm and relaxation. Of course, this can sometimes result in a room looking lacklustre so, if you are someone who prefers to avoid bold colours, consider adding rich deeper tones to provide more warmth to the space. Here are some ideas…

Opposite Page Cattelan Italia’s clever Orlando coffee table transforms itself into two heights. MISIA LUXURY IN THE GLAMOROUS HEART OF PARIS

Lovers of the finest style and taste are invited to pay a visit to the heart of one of Paris’s most iconic settings: the Marais. It is the birthplace of the capital, an architectural gem filled with tales and stories. Exquisite silks billow at the windows of the Hôtel de Sully and plush velvets with hexagonal or diamond patterns linger on the chaise-longues of private mansions. Perrotin, Templon, the most famous Parisian art galleries, are nestled here, showcasing their abstract, striking and colourful forms.

The perfect inspiration, therefore, for “Place des Vosges”, a bold, glamorous and refined collection that reflects the Misia brand’s Parisian origins. A wonderful chance to savour an artistic and emotional moment, and a new journey into the glamorous soul of luxury fabrics, exquisite colours, fine materials and unusual textures.

The themed collection takes its name from the former Place Royale in Paris, nerve centre of the Marais. Its 36 mansions are historic monuments (private houses once home to the upper classes and high-ranking royal officials), and today they provide the opportunity to stroll along historic arcades, with their art galleries, luxurious cafés and five-star hotels including The Ritz.

For 2023, “Place des Vosges” and the textures collection “Le Marais Secret” have been created with joint inspiration, without straying from the brand’s favoured theme of “travel”.

Misia says it is “embarking on a stationary journey, one that is both symbolic and introspective, returning to its glamorous, refined and sophisticated origins, but always with the same commitment to customers: to accurately portray French-style elegance”.

This launch is further complemented by a textures collection, “Laine Lin Textures”, in which refined weaves and bouclette fabrics are produced using natural, fine materials that are both soft and generous; and an outdoor collection, “Estival”, featuring luxurious fabrics that are designed to be taken from inside to outside to meet the requirements of both professional and private clients.

Misia is available from Alison Bethell-Collins Interior Design in Avenida del Mediterráneo, San Pedro de Alcántara (www.alisonbethellcollins.com), GC Studio in CC Camoján Corner in Marbella (www.gc-studio.es) and Arte del Lusso in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.artedellusso.es). CURTAIN INSPIRATION

Curtains can transform a room, aesthetically adding drama or subtle warmth. Choosing the right curtains for a room requires some careful thought. If a room lacks light or has small windows, sheers could be a good option, whereas blackout curtains would be appropriate for a bedroom when you want to block out light in the early morning. Linens have become increasingly popular as they drape well and add a natural organic feel to the room. They are especially ideal for Mediterranean homes because the material allows air to flow through while blocking out dust particles and providing privacy. If the room is restricted in space, go for curtains that do not have bold motifs. A plain curtain hung high can make the room feel larger than it really is. On the other hand, a large room might be in need of a focal point and this is where a patterned design would be more appropriate. Take a look at these ideas…

THE ULTIMATE WORKOUT AT HOME

HOME GYM ...
74 JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2023

It is that time of the year again when we realise that the excesses of Christmas haven’t done any favours to our waistline. With summer not that far away, it is time to get fit and ensure our bodies are well-toned in time for when the beach months are suddenly upon us.

The thought of joining a gym is daunting for many, so bringing the gym into the home can be a more appealing and realistic option. Having the convenience of a gym in your home generally means that you are more likely to use it. Since the dreaded lockdown, the concept of working out at home has become the new normal for many. With the recent rise in the cost of living, gym memberships can often be the first to suffer a cut, and the home gym equipment market has benefitted as a result.

If the room you have dedicated to your home gym is limited, consider a foldable treadmill and cabinetry to store equipment away after use. Dumbbells, resistant bands, yoga mats and gym balls are all inexpensive easy ways to start putting a gym together. Larger equipment such as spin bikes, rowing machines and cross trainers turn things up a notch. If your equipment needs electrical points, the layout needs to be carefully considered.

Workout equipment can seem very impersonal and even ugly, so make the space inspirational so that you are more inclined to use it. Work out in style with these ideas…

DINING AT HOME THIS WINTER

As the nights draw in earlier over the winter months, there is more of a tendency to dine at home than venture out as often as we might do at other times of the year. The dining area not only needs to be functional, but it should also be an area where people feel comfortable and relaxed. Needless to say, there is quite a lot to consider when embarking on purchasing a new dining set. The size of the table should allow the usual number of diners to sit comfortably, with plenty of elbow space between each person. If the room is restricted in space, a rectangular table would perhaps not be as suitable as a circular one, with the latter creating more space for people to walk around the table. In terms of materials, durability is key as dining tables can take quite a few knocks and stress from hot earthenware, which is why wooden tables have always been such a popular choice. Ensure that your dining chairs are the correct height for the table, leaving around a 30-centimetre gap between the table and the seat for diners to place themselves comfortably. Take a look at these ideas…

FANTASTIC FLOORS

The addition of a rug can brighten up a room and inject a sense of warmth and ambience. Area rugs come in a multitude of shapes, sizes, textures and designs, and they can often provide the perfect solution for creating a focal point in the room. Rugs can visually anchor the furniture, especially if it is a large space, adding a cohesive solution if furniture items seem a little lost. Having textile underfoot always feels cosy and aesthetically comforting. Rugs also help with noise reduction, especially if the room is echoey, as well as dumbing down the sound of footsteps for those in the room below. In general, there are many benefits to adding a rug to a living space, and prices vary hugely depending on what it is made of and how it was produced. A useful rule of thumb is that the higher the quality the longer it will last, which is particularly important with rugs as they can take a lot of wear-and-tear, especially in high-traffic areas of the home.

A UNIQUE PROPOSITION

BY DANISH HOME STYLISTS

Your Home Styling started up during the pandemic. Tell us more about this. Laura and I met in September 2019 and shortly afterwards we became a couple. We had a dream to start a business together offering turnkey solutions and interior design but, as nobody could leave their homes due to COVID-19, we started out as personal shoppers for customers, buying furniture from various retailers, putting packages together and installing the furniture into people’s homes who couldn’t be there themselves due to the restrictions. We even took photos and videos to help our clients see how their homes were progressing. We realised that this is something homeowners really appreciated so we continued to do this using our storage unit to keep our clients’ furniture safe and secure before installation.

Since then, we have opened our showroom on the Mijas Road and, even though we have a wide range of our own furniture in the Your Home Styling showroom, if clients like a piece of furniture or decorative item from elsewhere, we will incorporate it within the design to create the perfect home for the budget set by the client, which is why we consider ourselves as stylists within the interior design world.

How did you become so popular in such a short space of time?

I have been working here on the Coast within the furniture industry for some years and I really love to network. As I already had so many contacts here on the Costa del Sol as well as from my home country, Denmark, among other Scandinavian countries, it made sense to get in touch with them, informing everyone who I thought would be interested in the services Your Home Styling could bring to them. Of course, we are always interested in meeting new people and forging good relationships to create happy collaborations, and this is something we very much enjoy doing.

What is it that you feel your clients particularly like about how you work?

I think our clients have really bought into our level of service. They trust us and have faith in what we deliver. Both Laura and I have worked tirelessly to set up solid foundations so that the business could have the best opportunity to thrive and I think people have soon realised that we were serious about our work and we go the extra mile for our clients.

When we have been required to do so, we will work around the clock to ensure a job gets done properly and on time, which is something our customers

have recognised about us – our efficiency, attention to detail and the fact we genuinely care a lot about their homes. Many of our clients have become our friends and we often meet up socially for dinner and a catch-up. When you style someone’s home, you have to really try to understand that person’s artistic style and individual living requirements, which naturally brings you and the homeowner closer together.

What does 2023 have in store for Your Home Styling? Many things but we are currently working hard on our website so that we will be able to show everything we have available in our showroom on the site, and customers can peruse the webpage and buy immediately anything we have available in-store. We have plans to offer our clients interesting international brands such as Bolia, Tine K Home, Skagerak by Fritz Hansen, Fritz Hansen, Houe and Umage. We also have plans to buy some lovely new items for the showroom in the early part of the year which, of course, we plan to showcase on our website also.

Mijas Road has many home decoration showrooms. What do you think sets you apart from the others?

Even though our primary styles are contemporary, Nordic and boho (like many other showrooms in the area), we also gladly cater for other design preferences. We would also consider our prices to be generally more competitive than in other stores and, where other shops charge for an initial design proposal, we have chosen not to go down this route – thus making us more approachable to clients. We want to be considered as the friendly furniture company that offers a personal service with a high standard of service. We are very versatile and aim to help with everything and anything. That’s the major difference, and this makes Your Home Styling unique on the Costa del Sol.

WINNING WALLS

The world of wallpapers has had a bumpy ride. For a period, wallpapers were seen by some as old-fashioned and were often left out of interior design schemes. However, over recent years they have made a comeback in a big way, single-handedly transforming the aesthetics of the rooms they adorn. Wallpapers can add warmth, ambience and depth to a space, and if you choose to go for a bold statement design they provide a huge visual impact. A textural wallcovering can change the whole look and feel of the room, making it feel cosier.

Don’t be nervous about using wallpaper in darker tones: a wall in dark, sultry shades can be very alluring and evoke a relaxed mood, as well as accentuating whatever you have placed in front of it. Statement walls work best in large spaces, giving the room a focal point, so get creative and express yourself.

If wallcoverings are not your bag, then perhaps tiles are an option. Whether you want to create a look that is rustic, luxurious or contemporary minimalist, the tile sector is vast so it is wise to do your research.

KITCHENS TO BRING OUT THE PROFESSIONAL IN YOU

For those who love to cook, a commercially inspired kitchen will allow you to create and construct your culinary masterpieces quickly and with ease. Professional kitchens are designed to maximise space, workflow and efficiency so size really doesn’t matter.

Carefully consider the location of these key zones or workstations: preparation, cooking, washing, storage and service. Make life easier and position food storage next to a well-lit preparation area and cooking within easy reach of washing and service for speed and hygiene. You should be able to move swiftly from one area to another. Space permitting, an island is a great way of separating yourself and the job at hand from chatty dinner party guests or overly excited children, but do position your refrigerator within easy reach of both you and passersbys so that your workflow is uninterrupted. Strategically placed open shelves will help keep everything to hand and are easily cleaned. Keep work surfaces free from clutter and think twice before investing in unnecessary appliances – it might be nice to have but will you use it? And remember: open plan or not, you will never regret investing in a powerful extractor.

INSPIRING BATHROOMS

Previously, bathrooms were often seen as utilitarian spaces with very little thought given to design flair and innovation, but all of this has now changed. It is surprising how much a home can be judged by its bathroom. Simply adding some contemporary touches can sometimes make a huge difference, so updating your bathroom doesn’t always mean a huge investment in remodelling. Modernising your faucets, showerhead or washbasin can be all it takes to give the space a more elevated look. Keeping surfaces clear with good cabinetry helps to create an orderly look, allowing you to hide away unsightly bottles and self-grooming paraphernalia. Adding baskets to store towels is a great way to organise the room and, if the bathroom is quite small in size, floating shelves are always an excellent option – freeing up valuable floor space. Tiles can play a key role in the overall aesthetic of a bathroom, and this market has exploded in recent years. So it is worth doing your homework when choosing tiles, as it can be quite a minefield.

NEW BUSINESS HELPS MAKE COSTA DEL SOL HOMES SAFER THAN EVER

For the ultimate peace of mind for you and your loved ones, as well as protection against natural disasters such as forest fires and flooding, Marbella and the surrounding areas are welcoming the latest innovations in home protection and safety. Military-grade techniques and materials are behind Arcadia Engineering, who offer homeowners a range of products and services to ensure their home and family are looked after to the highest degree. According to Arcadia Engineering owner Levi Boterdael, “Safety is one of the utmost priorities for families, especially while in the comfort of their home. Not only is it important to protect yourself with home security but also, for the ultimate peace of mind, to protect you and your family against any outside threat as well as natural disasters. Your home is your castle and you should feel 100 per cent comfortable in it.”

Arcadia Engineering’s products range from panic rooms and jewellery safe rooms to fire detection and air purifying systems – for peace of mind, security and wellbeing in the home.

Panic Rooms

A safe (or “panic”) room is a fortified room installed in a home to provide a safe shelter or hiding place if there is a home invasion, but these rooms can also store personal belongings such as jewellery and items of value. The rooms can be hidden with a secret passage or hidden door and can also be bullet-proof or anti-explosion.

These panic rooms contain communication equipment with artificial intelligence, and the rooms are encased in concrete or steel for maximum durability. They can be positioned within the house or within the property site. Depending on the requirements, the panic rooms can be singular rooms or a larger area with multiple bedrooms, living areas and bathrooms for the entire family.

Secret Passages and Storage Rooms

Hidden routes throughout the home for stealthy travel allow the movement of people or goods, and it is common for these to lead into secret rooms, so that the family can enter or exit buildings without being seen. There is

a choice of customised doors to fit the décor of the home and provide a seamless and invisible entrance.

The most common use of a hidden bookcase is security. Unlike conventional safes or vaults, a secret passage or vault will not direct criminals to the location of your valuables. In addition, secret rooms provide more space for storing valuables, leaving you able to store and display valuables conveniently.

Anti-Fire Systems

The Arcadia long-range EFD system uses advanced AI-based early fire detection algorithms to alert you to the early signs of a wildfire breakout in the surrounding area – a particular concern in the south of Spain and for homes located in the mountainous areas of the Costa del Sol. This is an advanced system compared to existing detection methods which have “over temperature” alarms, and therefore enables early evacuation and fire alarms.

FULLY-ELECTRIC SUV MARKS NEW ERA FOR VOLVO

Volvo Cars has embarked on a new era with the launch of the company’s first fully-electric model. The EX90 is a seven-seat, all-electric SUV that has been developed to consolidate Volvo’s commitment to high safety standards and a more sustainable lifestyle.

According to the company, the plan is to unveil one new fully-electric car each year. “By 2030, we aim to sell only fully-electric cars, one of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry and crucial to our ambition to be a climate-neutral company by 2040.”

The launch presentation was held in Stockholm to reflect Volvo’s Swedish roots. “At the same time, reflecting our global footprint as a company, the Volvo EX90 will be built in the USA starting next year and later also in China. By then, we aim for those two production facilities to be climate-neutral.”

The Volvo EX90 is described as “a new instant classic in Scandinavian design… defining the principle of form following function. It’s a versatile, stylish family car with modern proportions, combined with cutting-edge technology in core computing, connectivity and electrification to optimise safety, efficiency and aesthetics.”

Delivering up to 373 miles (600 kilometres) of tailpipe-emission-free driving range on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle, the Volvo EX90 charges from 10 to 80 per cent battery capacity in under 30 minutes.

The initially available twin-motor all-wheel-drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 380kW (517hp) and 910Nm of torque.

The SUV is reported to contain approximately 15 per cent of recycled steel, 25 per cent of recycled aluminium, and 48 kilogrammes of recycled plastics and bio-based materials, “which corresponds to around 15 per cent of the total plastic used in the car – the highest level of any Volvo car to date”.

The EX90 is Volvo’s first car equipped with all the necessary hardware to enable bi-directional charging. “It’s a technology whereby you can use your car battery as an extra energy supply, for example to power your home, other electric devices or another electric Volvo car. We plan to make bi-directional charging available in the future, starting with selected markets.”

Phone key technology comes as standard for the EX90, with the driver’s smartphone serving as their car key and automatically unlocking the car and starting a “personal welcoming sequence” as they approach the vehicle. Their personal profile will also be loaded automatically as they enter the car. The Volvo EX90 has an “invisible shield of safety” enabled by latest sensing technology, inside and outside. State-of-the art sensors such as cameras, radars and lidar are connected to the car’s high-performance core computers, where NVIDIA DRIVE runs Volvo Cars’ in-house software to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world.

“Our sensors don’t get tired or distracted. They are designed to respond and react when you’re just a fraction too late. Our lidar can sense the road in front of you, whether it’s day or night – also at highway speeds. It can see small objects hundreds of metres ahead, creating more time to inform, act and avoid. The sensors also contribute to improving the reliability and overall

performance of our assisted driving function, Pilot Assist, with a new steering support function while changing lanes.

“Inside, our invisible shield of safety also looks out for you. Special sensors and cameras, powered by our own in-house-developed algorithms, gauge eye gaze concentration. The technology allows the Volvo EX90 to understand when you’re distracted, drowsy or otherwise inattentive, beyond what has been possible in a Volvo car to date.

“It’ll alert you, first softly nudging, then more insistent. And if the unthinkable happens and you fall asleep or are taken ill while driving, the Volvo EX90 is designed to safely stop and call for help. Finally, thanks to the state-of-the-art sensor set including lidar, the Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo that’s hardware-ready for unsupervised driving in the future.”

A core system – powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms Xavier and Orin, Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies and in-house-de-

veloped software by Volvo engineers – runs most of the core functions inside the car, from safety and infotainment to battery management.

“The result is a more responsive and enjoyable experience inside the car. In other words, your Volvo EX90 won’t be just a new car: it will be a highly advanced computer on wheels. Even better, just like your smartphone or your laptop, the Volvo EX90 is designed to get better over time, thanks to regular over-the-air software updates.”

Complementing this technology is a pleasant and elegant car interior highlighted by natural and responsibly sourced materials.

“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” says chief executive Jim Rowan. “It’s fully-electric with a range of up to 600 kilometres on a single charge, designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices. The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways.”

FIVE EXCEPTIONAL DINING EXPERIENCES AT LUXURY RESORT

It is not widely known that the luxury hotel complex of Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís Marbella Resort is home to as many as five impressive restaurants within its sprawling grounds – open all-year-round. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was privileged to be invited to this palatial hotel to experience their entire gastronomic portfolio first-hand… and what an evening it was.

All culinary tastes are sumptuously catered for at the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís Marbella Resort with each of their five restaurants offering its own distinctive gastronomic personality, all enjoying a picturesque setting, surrounded by nature and gardens with views over the resort’s lake and Flamingos golf course.

Located on one of the Sierra Blanca mountain range slopes, three kilometres inland from the beach between Estepona and Marbella, both hotel guests and locals can enjoy breakfast at the buffet, savour an Andalucian aperitif, choose from a selection of healthy Mediterranean dishes, opt for Japanese haute cuisine or try the finest Italian gastronomy, with vegan options at all five restaurants, as well as children’s menus.

Hole 55

Located next to the tee area, Hole 55 is the ideal place to relax in the open air and recharge your batteries after a day of golf. Chef Malika Bensouna Elabasee has created an informal menu that includes healthy salads and Andalucian tapas, plus special daily dishes such as couscous on Sundays, and a selection of Middle Eastern and other international dishes.

99 Sushi Bar

Contemporary and original, 99 Sushi Bar offers a menu that showcases the authentic flavours of Japanese fusion cuisine, based on its philosophy of respect for ingredients and the use of traditional techniques. These iconic dishes are created by Ángel Sánche under the direction of the executive chefs. The restaurant also has a private area for groups of up to eight people.

La Loggia

The hotel’s main restaurant, La Loggia remains open all day, offering a cosy ambience for both indoor and outdoor terrace dining that is overseen by

executive chef Manuel Navarro. The day starts with breakfast at 7am, while lunch features light and appetising Mediterranean cuisine. Also, at noon diners can choose their salad ingredients from a small gourmet market displaying the finest “Kilometre Zero” seasonal vegetables. At night, La Loggia is transformed into an Italian restaurant under the baton of chef Esteban Periañez.

La Veranda

Anantara Villa Padierna’s most iconic and elegant restaurant, La Veranda is the perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner under the stars in a stunning garden setting with ponds. Executive chef Santiago Altuna creates new gastronomic options that showcase a return to the restaurant’s historical roots, regaining its most symbolic dishes that have been favourites among guests over the past 20 years.

La Pérgola and Irene’s Health Kitchen

Located next to the pool, La Pérgola is open throughout the day. In addition to wines, cocktails and aperitifs, chef in charge Irene Hernández has put together a menu of light cuisine with Mediterranean flavours, including fresh salads, vegetarian dishes and pizzas, complemented by a daily selection of flavoured waters and detox juices. Other healthy dishes can be tasted in Irene’s Health Kitchen, a cosy new space in the spa, which (at 2,000 square metres) is one of the most luxurious and largest in Europe.

WINES FOR A ROMANTIC VALENTINE’S EVENING

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’m sure many of you will already have in mind some romantic gift ideas. However, have you thought about what wine to drink for the evening? I’m here to help you choose wine that both tastes good and looks attractive – and add some spice to your special evening.

First of all… Love You Bunches from Stolpman Vineyards. I mean, look at the handwritten font and text. How cute is that? The answer is, loads. From Santa Barbara in the United States, this carbonic fermented Sangiovese is surprisingly pleasant, with a light body featuring ripe red berries, watermelon and high acids. Super juicy.

Some say French is the most romantic language, so for a third option try this Love by Léoube (Château Léoube). It is a classically pale, salmon-coloured Provence rosé – fresh, dry, crisp and elegant. The nose and palate confirm strawberry, raspberry, pink grapefruit and rose petals. Un pur amour…

Our second wine is Petalo-Il Vino Dell’Amore (Bottega). A sparkling rosé, it is a little bit on the sweet side, displaying aromas such as apricots, sweet peaches and lychee. The stunning bottle has a large pink rose on the label – truly romantic.

If you prefer a full-bodied wine, check out this fourth choice, Il Mio Amore Amarone (Cantina Valpolicella). It is a classic-style Amarone with dark berries, figs, coffee and chocolate notes and some nice leather touches. Its lovely label means you can taste true love in a bottle. If your partner isn’t romantically impressed after this, they might have a heart of stone.

So, to sum up… if your Valentine’s date doesn’t go as planned, at least the wine was good.

A GREAT TIME TO FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

If you have an old passion, now is the time to revitalise it. The new year can usher in a new you. Never before has there been such a great demand for workers, and many companies are especially seeking older adults because they tend to have a stronger work ethic. Currently, it is very easy to establish your own business no matter what your age thanks to the internet.

At 74 years of age, painter Mary Joan Branstetter never thought she would be having such a big career. In the past couple years, her daughter and son both almost died. It was only through her art and the encouragement of her husband that she was able to endure. Her husband Mark knew she had talent and so he arranged for a workspace in their house filled with windows and outside light. It was just the right light and environs for bringing her brand of contemporary impressionism to life. Branstetter is a contemporary abstract impressionist and her recent collections found surprising popularity in the Pacific Northwest in the States. Now, she has several art shows planned. “I started painting again after I retired. I am now a mother, grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of four. My husband is a golf professional and retiring this year. He is a big part of my art because he has supported me and encouraged me to follow my passion,” said Branstetter. That support now is paying off in a significant way: A new career at 74. For many years, Branstetter had been doing hand-painted cards and they were noticed and word spread. Now, she has had two art shows in Seattle (Washington) and other venues are planned. “My work is inspired by colour. Colour in the world is what makes life beautiful. My multi-cultural family has inspired me to see that the combination of everyone is a blanket of amazing differences. When you combine all that beauty together, it’s colour at its best. The more colour, the more beautiful the world becomes,” said Branstetter. Leigh-Ann Webster, who is the executive director at the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching and a certified personal trainer, says this is an ideal time for an older adult to start a new business or career. “It is invigorating for people to begin new careers later in life, and these people can also bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the people they are serving. If someone is thinking about starting a new career path they should figure out how to do it and begin. I doubt they would regret this decision,” said Webster.

Start by writing down what your dream is, said Webster, who is 51 years old. Then, ask yourself why you want to pursue this venture and what regrets you think you will have if you don’t chase after this dream. “If you still want to pursue your dream after this, then begin creating a roadmap and charting out what needs to happen, so you can take the first step forward,” said Webster, who is based in San Diego (California).

Re-Wirement May be Required

Career consultant Paula Fitzgerald Boos is a re-wirement coach. She helps older adults define their personal value and create a proactive plan to get them to their next great role. As a “third act/re-wirement” consultant, she works with clients as they make intentional and thoughtful choices about “who” they want to be by designing a life of richness. She said anyone can start a new career at any age. “A mistaken belief continues to be that careers and professional lives are linear. This is not the case,” said Boos. Some of her clients have made dramatic vocational changes later in life. One of Boos’ clients was an artist who became a nonprofit development leader and started their own website related to art and returned to creating more of their own art.

Another client was a corporate marketing and communications leader at Boeing who became a photographer. “There continues to be more research

confirming the value of age diversity in teams, and more companies are getting on board with the idea that having different generations in the workplace can contribute to strong culture,” said Webster.

There are many talented people who didn’t get their career rolling until later in life. Duncan Hines developed his cake mix brand when he was 73 years old. Anna Mary Robertson Moses was nicknamed Grandma Moses and started her American folk painting career at 78. In 1938, Louis J. Caldor, an art collector in New York, saw Moses’ paintings in the window of a drug store. He bought their supply and 10 more from her house for $3 or $5 each. The next year, three Grandma Moses paintings were included in New York’s Museum of Modern Art exhibition titled “Contemporary Unknown American Painters”. Too often it is fear that holds individuals back,” said Webster. “Facing your fear, choosing change, and being a half a shade braver leads to growth. Humans are designed to continue to keep growing until we die.”

Many of today’s older adults are redefining what it means to be retired and they are following their passions. Having a job after official retirement is becoming increasingly common. Employers are recognising that mature workers often have strengths that some younger workers don’t.

NORDIC WALKING FOR HEALTH

Being an advocate of all things walking I have recently begun exploring the rather strange looking phenomena of Nordic walking. This form of walking has been around since the early 20th century when skiers explored different methods to maintain fitness during the summer. However, the Nordic walking we see now arose in 1997, when a Finnish sports institute and ski pole company came together to engineer high-performance poles and develop a walking technique that would deliver maximum health and fitness benefits.

Nordic walking is a great all-round body workout. Walking with poles combines cardiovascular exercise with a vigorous muscle workout for your shoulders, arms, core, chest and legs. Unlike walking without poles, you activate all the muscles above the waist (utilising about 90 per cent of your musculature as opposed to 50 per cent without poles.)

Because of this Nordic walking burns 20 per cent more calories when compared with normal walking. You might also experience elevated heart rates during Nordic walking compared with normal walking but without noticeable additional effort.

The lightweight, tall poles and upright posture encourage a rhythmical gait that tends to feel more comfortable than walking without poles, even at a fast pace. It is important to note here that the correct poles are essential to enabling the full health benefits of this sport. Hiking poles that take the support of the body do a different thing entirely.

Nordic walking can be done by almost everyone. There is evidence that it is superior, with respect to improvements in functional health, than other exercise in people with heart disease. In a recent study from Ottawa, 130 patients were randomised to either high-intensity interval training, moderate-to-vig-

orous intensity continuous training or Nordic walking over a 12-week period. The researchers evaluated functional capacity, quality of life and depression symptoms following the exercise programs. Although all the exercise programs improved quality of life and depression symptoms, Nordic walking demonstrated the most significant improvement in functional capacity, an increase of 19 per cent, compared with 13 per cent for high-intensity interval training and 12 per cent for moderate-to-vigorous intensity continuous training.

Many studies in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease have shown improvements in breathlessness, muscle strength and exercise tolerance after a period of Nordic walking, and studies of Parkinson’s disease have shown improvements in gait and balance after training.

Here in Andalucía, we even have our own Nordic walking competitions and Danish-born Kike Villanueva Heimann, who has lived in Marbella since he was two months old, has twice been crowned “king of the walking poles”.

In 2023 I will be looking to bring this fantastic health sport to our “paseo” with the loan of poles, instruction and heart rate monitoring. So, if you want to experience Nordic walking, why not get in touch.

Celebrations will be two-fold this year as the Costa del Sol marks two major Pablo Picasso milestones. The Málaga-born artist (25 October 1881) died on 8 April 1973, and a series of cultural events are planned throughout the world to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. This year is also the 20th anniversary of the Museo Picasso Málaga, considered a key reference point in the capital’s transformation into a global hub of culture.

Inaugurated on 27 October 2003, the museum has welcomed eight million visitors over the past two decades, offering a constantly changing program that includes both works by Picasso and other exhibitions.

Supported by the generosity and close involvement of Christine, Bernard and Almine Ruiz-Picasso, and management backing by the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) and contributions by the museum’s patrons, directors and staff, the MPM is recognised as having brought about a qualitative shift in museology in Andalucía.

In a news release announcing details of the celebrations, the museum noted that over the past 20 years it had launched “innovative museographical

proposals, has regularly renewed its permanent collection and has organised exhibitions that have had a notable influence on contemporary cultural debate – events and projects of a type never previously organised in the region. “Furthermore, the MPM has devised an innovative and influential educational and mediation programme which has attracted and interacted with numerous sectors of the public while also forging links with the university world and with researchers through its seminars and encounters on an international level.

“During this process of development and evolution as an institution, the MPM has been able to take on some of the characteristics of a ‘cultural centre’, not just through its organisation of activities but also due to its emphasis on social inclusion and focus on diversity.”

In addition to this ongoing mission, future plans for the MPM include the integration of cultural activity into the digital society, with the aim of creating joint activities with other museums and cultural institutions in Andalucía. “Already launched with the Museo de Bellas Artes and the Museo del Hospital

de los Venerables in Sevilla, this initiative has been extremely well received across all sectors of society.”

In the meantime, the museum will be playing a key and active role in the international “Picasso Celebration 1973-2023” program, which comprises 50 exhibitions and events organised by cultural institutions of the European Union (16 exhibitions in Spain, 12 in France, two in Germany, and one in each of Belgium and Romania), two in Switzerland, one in Monaco, and seven in the United States.

In Málága, the museum is planning two exhibitions: “Picasso: Matter and Body”, curated by Carmen Giménez, which will be on display from 9 May to 10 September 2023; and “The Echo of Picasso”, curated by Eric Troncy and to be held between 3 October 2023 and 24 March 2024.

In parallel, the MPM’s permanent display will be renewed with two “Dialogue” proposals curated by Michael FitzGerald and the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte (FABA).

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR SEASON CONCLUDES AT ANANTARA VILLA PADIERNA PALACE

The 2023 Ladies European Tour season came to a captivating conclusion at Anantara Villa Padierna Palace in Benahavís. Played at the resort’s Alferini Golf course, the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España was not only the last event of the year but also the decider for “Race to Costa del Sol” honours for the highest ranked players in 2022. Only two, Sweden’s Linn Grant and Maja Stark, had a chance of finishing number one going into the tournament, and it was 23-year-old Grant, also the 2022 “Rookie of the Year” after

winning four times, who prevailed with a superb final day eight-under 65 to secure third place at Alferini Golf. The tournament itself was won by another Swede, 33-year-old Caroline Hedwell, who was seeking her first victory in four years. After finishing level with Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux at the end of 72 holes, she triumphed on the fourth extra hole of sudden-death. Ireland’s Leona Maguire was fourth, and England’s Alice Hewson and Spanish amateur Cayetana Fernandez were joint fifth.

ACQUISITION OF A PROPERTY BY A NON-RESIDENT IN SPAIN

Taxes arising from the purchase of a property do not vary whether the acquisition is by an individual or a company, resident or non-resident in Spain. Spanish non-resident income tax is a self-declaration tax that all non-fiscal residents who own a property in Spain should present to the Spanish inland revenue (Agencia Tributaria) on an annual basis.

When the property is owned by a married couple, or by more than one person, each person is an independent taxpayer and an individual tax form should be presented.

Depending on the use of the property, income tax in Spain is calculated as follows:

· Calculation of the income, considering the exclusive personal use of the owners. A determined rate is applied on the cadastral value of the property.

· Calculation of the income in case the property is rented out: the rental price without the deduction of any costs is taken into account.

In both cases, for European non-residents, the rate applied in 2022 was 24 per cent.

A 100 per cent bonification was applied from 2022 for wealth tax in Spain. The general rate of company tax for an “SL” company in Spain is 25 per cent.

New companies created on or after 1 January 2015, and carrying out economic activities, are taxed at 15 per cent for the first tax period in which the tax base is positive and also for the following tax period.

Entities resident in a country or territory that has the status of a tax haven and that own real estate in Spain are subject to non-resident income tax through a special tax that accrues on 31 December each year and must be presented to the tax authorities the following January.

The tax base is constituted by the cadastral value of the property and the tax rate is three per cent. When the cadastral value is not available, the tax is calculated based on the purchase price.
