From the

Summer is invariably a time for relaxing and putting less urgent projects on the backburner until the weather cools down and the festive agenda becomes less frenetic. At Home & Lifestyle Magazine, we are happily and resolutely committed to following that eminently sensible formula for enjoying another delectable al fresco season by the sea. However, before slipping into full summer mode we had one pending mission. For this 40th edition of Spain’s premier English-language publication on décor, design and the Mediterranean lifestyle, we decided it was time for a major revamp. In addition to a snappy design makeover – to make the magazine easier to read in today’s digital-influenced age and to highlight the featured products in an even more attractive and stunningly visual manner – we have also streamlined the sections in the first part of Home & Lifestyle to cover all aspects of “Décor & Design”. From cool outdoors and chilled-out lounge areas to chic bathrooms and multi-functional kitchens, from state-of-the-art furniture to cutting-edge ambient lighting, from dazzling mosaics to flamboyant wallpapers and fabrics… we offer an enlivening blend of classic sophistication and elegant latest trends, as well as highlighting admirably “eco-conscious” projects around the world. Also in this section, we check out what’s new at the world’s main home decoration fairs and exhibitions, showcase some of the exceptional properties being built on the Costa del Sol, talk to key business insiders in the industry – and (this issue) recommend a summer evening visit to one of Spain’s botanical gems, La Concepción in Málaga. The way we style and furnish our home is, of course, inexorably linked to the distinctive lifestyle we enjoy here in southern Spain. So, away from home, our enhanced “Lifestyle” section in the second part of the magazine offers some alluring travel and getaway options (both in Spain and elsewhere in Europe), savours the sumptuous aromas of Spanish cuisine (including top wines and refreshing cocktails), provides some timely tips on how to temper our enthusiasm for the good life with a commonsense approach to health and wellbeing, reviews the upcoming art and cultural agenda, reports on latest business news and innovations, and takes a comprehensive tour of the lavish inaugurations and soirées that have already launched the 2015 summer season. The party has just begun!

Kitchen Living

The major kitchen brands are constantly evolving and wowing us with the ultimate in technology, functionality and beauty. Cupboard handles are disappearing, together with extractor fans that are now often built-into the hob. Kitchens are now not just functional places where we simply cook but are also living areas where the household comes together to exchange conversation and pass the time. With this in mind, kitchens have become more open-plan to create an uncluttered and more social environment. Raw materials are growing in popularity in the kitchen, including wood and natural stone to give a more organic feeling to the room – steering away from the synthetic look of kitchens in the past. Left This kitchen worktop is made of Silestone, which is a highly durable compound comprising natural quartz and which has bacteriostatic protection – making it extremely hygienic. It comes in a number of different colours so it is an extremely versatile product for a kitchen. Silestone is available at Mercasur in Estepona (www.mercasurestepona.com), Concept Building in Pol. Going All Out on the Tiles

Mosaics are essentially small pieces of stone or glass called tesserae, assembled to make up an artistic pattern that is dimensional and original. The visual direction and flow within a mosaic pattern is called an andamento. Mosaics have been used for religious and domestic decoration during ancient Roman times, in the Islamic world and throughout central and western Europe. Selecting tiles for your home can be a daunting task as there is so much to choose from. From glittering gold and metallic tiles to porcelain tesserae, there is something for everyone. Mosaics can be made of glass, ceramic or stone. Glass mosaic tiles have become extremely popular in recent years, offering shimmering elegance to a swimming pool, wall or floor. Mosaics can make a breathtaking statement, providing artistic expression and depth whether you choose to apply brightly coloured or neutral tesserae. Due to the diversity of mosaic tiles, if you prefer a traditional look then neutral-coloured options would perhaps be more to your liking, while brightly coloured tiles are better suited for a contemporary, eye-catching look. Nowadays glass mosaic tiles come in frosted or glossy finishes, and in an infinite number of colours, sizes and unique shapes. When choosing tiles, you will need to consider the usage of the tile: for example, some tiles can withstand heavy floor traffic and others are more suitable for walls. Also, it is important to choose tiles that can endure temperature changes if you want to apply them outside. Glass mosaic tiles are often used as backsplashes due to their practicality. They protect walls from damage caused by water absorption and are easy to clean. Metallic mosaics are ideal for showcasing a focal point in a room such as a fireplace or around a mirror. Ceramic tiles are anti-static and highly durable, lasting up to 20 years or more if maintained correctly. The surface of ceramic tiles (whether they are glazed or unglazed) is very thick and they have a low risk of cracking and scratches. Allergy-causing microorganisms are easily removed from tiles, making them very hygienic. Brushing or vacuuming is the best way to keep ceramic floor tiles clean, and domestic heavy chemicals can be used to remove deep stains. They can be printed to mimic the appearance of hardwood or natural stone, and can be cut into triangles, rectangles or strips. Glazed ceramic floor tiles have a protective layer that makes them resilient to water and stains, and they have non-slip properties. They are also naturally resistant to humid atmospheres, making them perfect for areas of the home where warmth and water is prevalent – such as in the kitchen or bathroom. Tiles are ideal for floor heating due to good thermal conductivity. If the ceramic tiles are unglazed, they will need a sealant to protect them from water, as well as good grouting.

They have a comprehensive catalogue of over 40,000 products encompassing every area of the home. Some of their own works can be seen in the showroom itself. Gunni&Trentino also has an impressive area of raw materials on the first floor of their showroom including natural stone from the best quarries in the world and various wood, tiles and coatings enabling them to also supply to the trade. Gonzalo Moreno, the Director and son of one of the original creators of Gunni&Trentino, is dynamic and passionate about modern design. He combines his creativity and energy with the experience gained from his family’s heritage which has resulted in a very successful showroom. Through Gonzalo’s acute business sense, he has managed to obtain the best prices possible from his suppliers without compromising on quality and innovation. They manage projects for professional and private clients, ensuring that the assignment adheres to correct planning, budget control and time management. Gonzalo comments, “We are the designers and suppliers for many residential developments, hotels, restaurants, offices, public spaces and clinics. The success of a project depends on many elements, but without any doubt, organization and project management are paramount to the design and quality provided which is where we excel. We are a well-structured, strong business with a great deal of experience, so we can guarantee the best execution of a project in all of its essential aspects.” Gunni&Trentino work with a huge variety of premium brands such as B&B Italia, Maxalto, Devon & Devon, Armani Casa, Paola Lenti and Poliform to name but a

few and are also an official distributor of the luxury glass mosaic tiles company, Bisazza. This prestigious northern Italian brand produce sparkling mosaic tiles that appear like precious stones in a swimming pool or spa transforming it into a truly magical place. The versatility of Bisazza tiles means that they can be used in many different areas of a home or commercial space offering creative sophistication from a high profile design aspect. Bisazza hit the height of opulence recently with their new macro-tiles in 24 carat gold and glass exuding the ultimate in luxurious majestic splendour. Their gold collections emanate warmth and timeless glamour that is unforgettable. Bisazza is one of the most renowned brands for glass mosaic tiles and they have recently expanded into the world of cement tiles, a development which has further strengthened the Bisazza brand attracting a different kind of clientele. It is reassuring and pleasing to know that so many companies are doing things with very ordinary, discarded objects – as highlighted in our first item this issue on Ting. We tend to throw away so much “stuff” but with a bit of thought we can reduce our “throwaways” to a limited amount per year. It can be done! With the other bits that we do throw out, ideas and ways of recycling pop up to the benefit of us all.

New Designs for Reclaimed Materials The brainchild of Inghua Ting, this company working from London and Los Angeles found a use for a very banal everyday object that was getting thrown away all the time: leather belts. They are made into flooring, panelling, seat belt cushions, cubes, slings and bags. Following graduation from the Royal College of Art, Inghua worked in Japan developing innovative, futuristic fabrics. However, working at the forefront of fabric technology enabled her to consider sustainable issues, and the challenges of designing and producing desirable, luxury products from reclaimed materials. Inspired by seat belts, old leather belts, vintage leather saddles and a range of salvaged fabrics, Ting is incorporating these materials into new designs. Products are defined by three branded collections: Ting, Ting Home and Ting London. Ting has also produced several bespoke projects for clients such as Hard Rock Hotel, Sketch Bar & Restaurant, Nike and Warner Bros. www.tinglondon.com

Ancient Rice Paper Craft Meets Contemporary Style Artmurò is a brand created by Kalìt, a leader in Europe for custom printing on rice paper. It is as strong and shiny as a pearl, and thin and soft to the touch. These collections for natural-fibre interior mural decoration, titled “Examples”, have three objectives: • To be applicable on walls, panels, wood or glass. • To inspire artists to create their own exclusive collections, which Artmurò can then print. • To be adaptable in colours and sizes. Their rice paper blends completely with walls, is adaptable and can be coordinated to furnishings, creating a unique, refined setting. It is possible to change with different painting techniques: oil paints, acrylics, airbrushing for gradients, or brushing to re-touch or add detail. They can customise the rice paper with your images or your own designs, producing creations for whole walls or furniture elements: doors, furniture, lamps, coordinating colours and design spaces. Artmurò stress that they have the deepest respect for nature and human life. As the product is made from rice paper plant pith, it has nothing to do with rice. It is the term used to qualify the thin, sometimes semi-transparent paper – and is very eco-friendly. www.artmuro.it

EXHIBITIONS Madrid on the Move

Natuzzi/Raul Martins (Casa Decor)

Every year Casa Décor – an exclusive exhibition featuring top industry professionals and leading brands – takes over one of Madrid or Barcelona’s emblematic or historic buildings, undertakes a major refurbishment and, for just over a month, presents dozens of projects to a select public. The building chosen for the latest edition, the 50th, was the former Real Fábrica de Ceras (Royal Wax Factory) commissioned for construction by Carlos III in 1788. It is located in Calle La Palma in the central Madrid district of Malasaña, which languished after its golden “La Movida” years but has been rejuvenated with a new era of young artists, designers and creators opening alternative shops, outlets and restaurants. www.casadecor.es

IDDOMUS ID stands for innovation, design and development; while DOMUS (from the Latin) means “house” or “home”.

IDDOMUS turns the often wearying endeavour of building your dream home on the Costa del Sol into an easy and enjoyable experience A high-quality brand of distinctive turnkey designer villas built to outstanding northern European standards on Spain’s southern coast, IDDOMUS is a one-stop Belgian-owned development and construction company that comprehensively handles the entire process of building bespoke modern designer villas to clients’ specifications, on a turnkey and completely trouble-free basis. Clients decide on a location, approve a project that is tailored to the last detail of their wish list, and are kept informed in detail of the development and building progress – right through to the handing over of the key for the finished home. And all this with the highest quality and guarantees available in the current market. IDDOMUS’s prime commitment to quality is followed through in each of the company’s departments. The team comprises a highly motivated international group of professionals who apply themselves proudly to the task of successfully and soundly building their clients’ homes. Members of all the departments – including design, construction, technical and corporate – are part of the permanent IDDOMUS staff. This is a key factor for ensuring optimal workflow coordination, communication and timely project fulfilment, a combination that overrides the risks that can arise from multiple-party contracting. SHOWCASE

The quality maxim applies to every detail of the architectural design, development and building of an IDDOMUS Signature Project, from the moment of identifying a client’s requirements and priorities. This is followed by: • A geotechnical study of the plot to determine the optimal position and integration of the future home. • The selection of all building materials, finishes and equipment. • An extremely detailed, graphic and itemised presentation of the project’s blueprint and budget. • Thorough proceedings for the issuing of building permits and final utility contracts. • Professional execution of the work and rigorous building quality control. • Dedicated communication with the client along every step of the process. Nothing is left to chance: It is a comprehensive commitment to giving clients peace of mind.

80

In terms of guarantees, an independent quality inspection body such as OCA SOCOTEC (a leading international company in the field of construction quality inspection, survey and certification) officially certifies each and every construction phase before the pertaining invoice for the completed stage is issued. This way clients are certain they will never pre-pay for unexecuted works, with the guarantee that payments are only extended for what is sound and built to the expected quality. In addition to this risk-minimising procedure, guarantees on the final project offered by IDDOMUS go far and beyond the decennial guarantee established by Spanish law, which relates to structural aspects only. IDDOMUS includes three years of overall guarantee for the premises and installations, as well as three years of technical maintenance. IDDOMUS villas are highlighted by a modern, minimalist and functional design, and the superior, uncompromised quality of the construction and finishes.

ARK’s commitment to ongoing research into traditional materials enables it to achieve eye-catching results with all its projects. The company is committed to excellence, and to that end pays special attention to such materials as iron, mortar and copper, selecting them all meticulously and applying this modern interpretation of classic architecture using modern state-of-the-art techniques. The company is also closely involved with the interior decoration, creating the home as a whole – not in an isolated fashion – with the landscape, exterior design, architecture and decoration all blending together to ensure a harmonious finished home (like the properties featured here). For ARK, the landscape and surroundings are also just as important as the actual house itself – “since we are dealing with living things”.

An intelligent mix of light and shadow, and warmth and freshness, is incorporated into all the corners of an ARK home. Lofty windows let in as much natural light as possible and small strategically placed details ensure intimacy and privacy. Backed with the experience of more than a decade in the construction sector, ARK comprises a multi-disciplinary team of technical architects who specialise in the different fields of building and town planning. 30/06/15 18:36

Designed and developed for Kleindienst Group’s island project off the coast of Dubai, The Floating Seahorse has been created for people wanting to live close to marine life. Described as “a truly unique underwater project which is the first of its kind in the world”, the project was unveiled earlier this year at the Dubai International Boat Show. It is “essentially a boat (without propulsion) not a villa… a marine-style retreat which has its own plot in the Arabian Gulf”. Each individual Floating Seahorse will have three levels: one underwater, one at sea level and an upper deck. The master bedroom and bathroom are totally submerged underwater, while the sea level accommodation features floor-to ceiling windows, uninterrupted sea views, a fully-fitted kitchen with a dining area, and an open-plan living area. When the glass façade opens the sun deck becomes an extension of the living space. The upper deck is ideal for al fresco dining and relaxation, with an informal

bed, a mini bar, a kitchenette and a glass-bottomed jacuzzi. The deck can be converted into a winter bedroom, enclosed with retractable drapes. And why The Floating Seahorse? Group CEO Josef Kleindienst explains, “The seahorse is an endangered species and we will create an artificial coral reef beneath the luxury retreats which will be a protected area in which seahorses can safely live and breed.” Only 42 units have been launched in Dubai, but The Floating Seahorse is not restricted to local waters, as it can be designed and fabricated in Dubai for other resorts and destinations worldwide. The estimated completion date is the end of 2016 (www.kleindienst.ae). HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

UDesign’s showroom in San Pedro de Alcántara is an irresistible lure for anyone who loves inspiring designs and cutting-edge décor. It is filled with exceptional furniture, outstanding decorations and dazzling lighting – both leading brands and individually styled pieces. The highly professional UDesign team – designers, architects, 3D graphic artists, specialist paint finishers, upholsterers and cabinet makers – create and produce everything in their own workshop across the road, designing bespoke furniture in any colour, material or size. Their prime objective is for the expectations of all clients – commercial or residential – to be fulfilled, and to that end they are committed to delivering high quality in every aspect. That philosophy and dedication is stunningly highlighted in the La Zagaleta villa featured here. The client’s main requirements for a major refurbishment of the 20-year-old renovated property were simple: warm, homely, practical, nice colours and inviting. UDesign used natural materials such as wood and stone, and rich, warm and earthy colour tones – and added an eastern touch to the overall style. Their plans for the work were inspired by the home’s different zones (lounge, kitchen and TV area). As they explain, “We wanted to have an open-plan feel and connect all zones together; each zone flows into the next. The terrace had to become an extension of the lounge. The whole project was completed in line with UDesign’s trademark: mixing together modern and natural materials to create an overall contemporary look and feel.” Polígono Industrial San Pedro, C/ Paises Bajos 6, San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella Tel. The Property

DOCTOR

By Sean Woolley We’ve all seen the adverts. Those seductive shots of sparkling swimming pools and sunny skies advertising properties on the Costa at knockdown prices and the promise of 100 per cent finance. Let’s be honest. On the face of it, bank repossessions look like the real deal. Homes in the sun that somebody else can no longer afford, offered at super-low prices and hardly a euro to pay to take ownership. What’s not to like! Our strong advice to anyone looking to buy a bank repossession on the Costa del Sol is to do proper due diligence and be aware of the pitfalls that can be involved in purchasing a property direct from a bank. Firstly, banks are not real estate agents. They don’t think or act like we do. The sales cycle is therefore a process; nothing more, nothing less. Secondly, each bank differs in how they handle and process transactions. Some banks will sell for “best price” offers within a certain time-frame, while others will only entertain bids at the asking price. In a lot of cases, buyers will need to submit a sealed bid and wait to see the result, a wait that can often amount to several weeks. In the majority of cases, the process is effectively an auction, and nobody really knows if they have secured the property until the bank informs them in their own good time. Even if you receive the green light, there then follows a further period of waiting while the bank collates and assesses the paperwork that they require for the mortgage application… oh, and that’s before they even start on the paperwork they need to ensure you comply with their anti-money laundering checks. Trust me, this doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, the last case I had took three months! But before you even get to the stage of buying one of these properties from a bank you need to do some heavyweight research. In which area are you buying? In which development? Remember the key issue of LOCATION at all times. If

something’s too good to be true, that’s because it generally is, so don’t be sucked in to an amazing deal just because it says so on the internet. Check if the property is in a desirable area, within a desirable project. And crucially, also check that you are paying a fair price. It’s not uncommon for banks to offer 100 per cent finance on a repossession, but with a selling price that is 10 per cent higher than neighbouring properties in the same development. Trust me, that’s not a scenario you want to get involved in! Unless you actually need higher-than-average finance, it’s worth looking at opportunities in the whole of the market. You may find a better “bargain” in the same location, one that you will be able to re-sell or rent out far easier. We have noticed a dearth of really good-quality bank repos so far this year. I mentioned in a previous article that 2013 was really the best year in terms of choice for this type of product. As the financial markets have continued their recovery in 2014 and 2015, so the market has shifted for most owners from one of desperation to one where they are now able to once again afford their holiday homes in the sun. One way of accessing good-quality bank stock without all the hassle of dealing directly with the banks is to purchase in a development that the bank has given to a promoter to sell. These are normally well-located projects that have been part-sold and then ran into trouble during the crisis. The banks invest money in refurbishing the site and offer the remaining units at a discounted price via an on-site promoter and a network of trusted agents. This works well for all concerned. Existing residents enjoy an upgraded development, new buyers benefit from discounted prices in a great location, and the buying and mortgage process is made much easier from the outset. I’ve highlighted here a couple of great options currently available. Happy hunting!

Why did you decide to open a showroom in San Pedro de Alcántara? Two years ago we only had an office in Madrid. That was our base for working on each overall project and for distributing terrace products throughout Spain, either from our online shop or via our sales representatives. We moved to Marbella when we had the opportunity of becoming involved in a terrace project for a new restaurant on the Costa del Sol. We were responsible for installing a Biossun pergola with adjustable louvres, the electric outdoor heaters and the misting system. Subsequently, we were contacted for another new project in the area, on this occasion a residential one. That was when we realised how much potential there was, and the possibility of establishing ourselves on the Coast. We believed it was important to present ourselves with a different “concept” as a company specialising in the outdoors. Hence the name Outdoor Concepts, and its different positioning in the market to Masterkool (the group’s other brand, founded in Madrid six years ago). Tell us a bit about the products you have in your showroom… Our objective is to distribute quality terrace products, based on innovation, exclusivity, design and efficiency. An internal department is in charge of evaluating each brand we distribute and the products we have available in stock in our showroom. For us, it is essential that clients are satisfied with our services and products. To that end, we have a firm commitment to post-sales services to ensure clients are happy. How do you see outdoor living furniture trends evolving in 2015? Outdoor products have evolved a great deal; increasingly they are being designed to facilitate the use and enjoyment of open-air spaces every day of the year. Pergolas with adjustable louvres and retractable roofs are the stars in sun protection, together with parasols featuring modern shapes and colours, screens, and awnings that almost disappear from the façade when closed. Misting systems and outdoor heaters are the perfect allies to cope with any temperature outside. All functions required for these products are available using a remote control with the touch of a button. In furniture, classic pieces for indoor areas are being reinvented for use outside, in a

large range of styles and materials; while cutting-edge designer barbecues add a touch of refinement. Exclusive exterior objects have become available for decorating outdoor areas, such as bioethanol fireplaces. Terracotta and aluminium garden planters – according to taste – finish off the outdoor area. Film and music lovers can enjoy various options for summer theatre and outdoor speakers. When shopping for outdoor spaces, what kinds of things should we be looking out for before buying? At Outdoor Concepts we appreciate the fact that terraces should be created for people to enjoy at all times of the day and every day of the year. That is why we advise clients who are buying products for the terrace to think about the overall project and bring it all together correctly, especially when starting from zero. In most cases, the first thing we think about is the terrace furniture, but that is easier to adapt to the space. Other kinds of products such as sun protection and air-conditioning are more difficult to integrate into the overall project later, although not impossible. Heading into the late summer/early autumn period, what kind of products will we be able to find at Outdoor Concepts? Our company offers an extensive and varied range of products for the outdoors, for each season of the year. If the end of summer is a bit chilly, we have many types of gas and infrared electric heaters to handle the drop in temperature and extend our stay on the terrace. If autumn begins with unseasonal high temperatures, the Masterkool misting system can help lower temperatures. Pergolas with adjustable louvres and glass or screen extensions are perfect if we want to protect our space from open-air conditions. Home Protection With Liberty Insurance

Probably the biggest asset you will ever buy will be your home so it’s vital you are well protected with a quality insurance policy that will cover you as you wish to be covered. With Liberty Quality Home Insurance you can be assured it does what it says on the tin, so to speak; it gives you quality cover for your most prized possession. Liberty Quality Home policies are available with three levels of protection, namely: Basic, Plus and Premium cover. All three options can include our two new additional services that you can use free of charge, with just a telephone call: • A DIY assistance service – once a year, during weekdays – in which you can ask for a professional to handle certain small household tasks like plumbing, hanging artworks or erecting flat-pack furniture, for example, with up to three hours of labour costs. • And also an IT service for home technology equipment that can provide support via telephone or online chat. When the technicalities are maybe a little too complicated for you, we can help with computers, multimedia players and browsers. Sometimes help is provided in-situ for the first hour. What’s more, as a special feature this year, Liberty has added a new cover: the unblocking of pipes, even if an incident has not occurred… A very useful added value that very few insurance companies offer. The Basic protection guarantees essential home coverage at an affordable price. Optional additional covers are available. For example, landlords can take advantage by taking out defence cover to claim for imperfections caused by tenants and non-payment of rent. The Plus option additionally covers: the costs of aesthetic restoration of the building and its contents; rebuilding or replanting a garden; 100 per cent of the

98

cost of glass and ceramic household appliances; broken windows; Plexiglass/ Perspex furniture breakages; and mugging. Refrigerated goods are also covered, as is garden furniture. And the Premium protection goes that little bit further. As part of its significant improvement, it covers the costs that the Plus policy offers and includes: cover for costs resulting from excess water consumption through broken pipes; solar panel glass; total building collapse; and accidental spillage of hazardous liquids, on the carpet for example. Whichever cover you prefer, some aspects can be tailor-made accordingly to suit your personal circumstances. Optional extra covers can include: personal accidents at home; increased cover limits for specified valuable objects like jewellery or cameras, for example; all risks outside the home on specified and non-specified goods, as well as in storerooms; all risks against accidental damage to the home, including property subsidence; public liability for dangerous breeds of dog. Your Liberty Seguros broker can advise you on all the options available to you. With Liberty Seguros you will always be in safe hands. Located at the top of a former industrial monumental crane, the Faralda NDSM Crane Hotel Amsterdam has become a stunning visual landmark in one of the city’s most creative and gastronomically diverse neighbourhoods. A team of architects headed by Edwin Kornmann Rudi worked on the renovation and transformation of the 50-metre-high crane for three years, eventually converting it into a five-star establishment with three luxury designer suites (the Mystical, Secret and Free Spirit) at a height of between 35 and 40 metres above the ground and – as to be expected – offering exceptional views over Amsterdam and the IJ river. Right at the top of the crane is an open-air Villeroy & Boch spa, and the 36 square metre suites are also equipped with Villeroy & Boch baths, including the La Belle and Squaro Edge 12. The crane turns slowly in the wind at its highest point, and the more adventurous guests can rope jump off the top with a mega swing of at least 90 metres and a free fall of tens of metres – monitored by professional and certified instructors. Also incorporated into the building is the Faralda Broadcasting Studio and Faralda Production Company. The studio can be used for productions of external parties, and is suitable for television recordings and corporate events. www.villeroy-boch.com / www.faralda.com

Dawn Drophead

The new Rolls-Royce Dawn revives a famous and rare name first used in 1949 but only ever applied to 28 special drophead bodies between 1950 and 1954. The original Silver Dawn was the first Rolls-Royce to be offered with a factory-built body, and the drophead models that carried the name Dawn continued to be coach-built for individual customers. Unveiled to representatives of the marque’s 130-strong global dealer network at the 2015 Rolls-Royce World Dealer Conference in Los Angeles, the modern-day Dawn is said to offer “a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date”. According to chief executive officer Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, “Dawn is a beautiful new open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds – an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine. It will be the most social of super-luxury motor cars for those beautiful people who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s social hotspots.” The Dawn is due to be launched in the first quarter of 2016.

Phantom Limelight Collection

The latest Bespoke Phantom Collection to emerge from the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood has been conceived for “that select group of people who spend their lives in the public eye and on the world stage”. Its name was inspired by the origin of a British invention, the limelight effect, originally discovered in the 1820s by British gentleman scientist and inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney. It was harnessed to revolutionise illumination in the theatres of London’s Covent Garden – hence the phrase “in the limelight”. Explains Torsten Müller-Ötvös, “In creating the Rolls-Royce Phantom Limelight Collection, our designers have delivered authentic luxury by thinking deeply about the lifestyles of the powerful people who operate in the public eye and move swiftly from engagement to engagement as part of their daily life.” The collection of 25 cars is currently available to order.

Wraith Inspired by Fashion

Bespoke Serenity

Presented at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, as a “new benchmark for luxury individualisation in the motor industry”, this one-off Phantom has been developed as a celebration of the historic role played by silk, The car design was inspired by Sir Henry Royce’s maxim, “When it does not exist, design it”, as well as the opulent interiors of Rolls-Royces that have conveyed royalty and world leaders, and contemporary interpretations of furniture design combined with Japanese Royal robe motifs.

Rolls-Royce’s first showroom in Mayfair was founded a short step from London’s famous centre of tailoring excellence, Savile Row, where Sir Henry Royce and The Honourable Charles Rolls echoed the offerings of their illustrious neighbours by providing London’s most stylish denizens with the automotive equivalent of the finest cloths. A century later, “Wraith – Inspired by Fashion” provides a modern take on this tradition. The journey of creating a bespoke Rolls-Royce motor car begins at the marque’s equivalent of the tailor’s atelier, the company’s design studio in Goodwood, where designers “hone the aesthetic theme of the car, drawing inspiration from colour palettes, materials and techniques used in the world of high fashion”. Chic Restaurant and Bar with an Intergalactic Twist

Photos: David Toms Nestled in the quaint area of Benavista near Estepona, there is a new restaurant/ bar that has really got the locals’ heads turning. Mos Eisley, named after the bar featured in the iconic film Star Wars, is a totally refurbished venue that welcomes all of the colourful characters of Marbella. Set up to be a family and dog-friendly venue, Mos Eisley has been cleverly thought-out to accommodate everyone. Glamorous owner Julie Campbell added her own personal touches to the design of the restaurant. At the entrance there is an elegant wooden terrace shaded by pink, green and blue drapes creating a relaxing environment whilst protecting you from the glare of the sun. When you enter inside, there is an eclectic mix of interior design. The bar, which serves a wide range of excellent wines and exotic cocktails, has a backdrop of copper piping that Star Wars fans might recognise from the films. The whole indoor area is a veritable treasure chest of interesting decorative items, with the most prominent including a mirrored mosaic statue of a woman looking up to the heavens and a huge black glittery face emerging out of the wall. The ceiling is adorned with an array of Moroccan ceiling lamps alongside more contemporary lights and chandeliers. At the rear of the venue is a charming courtyard that has a water feature in the

centre that enhances the area’s sense of tranquillity. To the side of the courtyard is the “enchanted forest”, which is just waiting to be discovered by curious little Jedis and where there are supervised activities for children. Their menu is varied and creative with a focus on healthy. The roasted beetroot, watercress and goat’s cheese salad served with fig anchoide and a delicious northern Spanish pear vinaigrette is certainly a customer favourite already, as is the monkfish, sweet potato and baby spinach salad with mustard vinaigrette sprinkled with dried cranberries. There are wraps, Thai dishes, burgers and wholemeal pizzas, and there is a great selection from their grill, including organic chicken, lamb chops and a rib eye steak for just €17.50. Julie comments, “We will be running themed nights, happy hours and times when ladies can drink for free, all details of which will be announced on our Facebook page and website. Our talented chef Enrique is world-travelled and combines a wonderful marriage of flavours, all beautifully presented on the plate and keeping in mind a price point to stay competitive.” Urb. A Magical New Dining Experience

Photos: David Toms José María Sanz had long dreamed of creating a multi-purpose venue in a prestigious environment offering premium quality food and drinks. A place where clients could enjoy anything from an organic breakfast and snacks to sumptuous cuisine and exquisite cocktails… Now that dream has become a reality: Palmyra opened its doors to the public in May with a lavish party for VIPs and other distinguished guests from Marbella’s high society. Located close to the beach, this stunning new entertainment and dining establishment offers an extensive range of options from morning to late at night.

The elegant décor, by Spacio Interior (www.spaciointerior.es), is divided into different areas: two terraces, a lounge area, a tearoom, a bar and separate dining areas. The restaurant even has its own shop offering such products as jewellery, furniture, and a variety of tea and beach hats and bags. Renowned chefs prepare a wide selection of tasting menus that include the best products from Spain and other countries. The portions are slightly bigger than tapas, which gives diners the opportunity of trying various dishes... refined food which is also well priced.

We enjoyed some superb creations, including caramelised pineapple with goat’s cheese filling, a mini timbale of fried eggs, baby vegetables with Iberian ham, a tournedos with foie gras, sushi and black risotto. The cocktail bar is also an important part of Palmyra. Here guests will find a large selection of the finest wines and delicious cocktails, prepared by highly professional bartenders. On Thursdays there is live music, including blues, jazz and bossa nova. In short, Palmyra is a hugely welcome new addition to downtown Marbella’s social life. Palmyra Restaurant Avda. Wine

NOTES

A Taste of Torres

Anyone with more than a passing interest in wine will be familiar with what is known as The Judgement of Paris. This blind tasting, organised in 1976 by an English negociánt, involved French experts comparing a selection of Californian wines with the best from Bordeaux and Burgundy. Much to the chagrin of the French the Napa products triumphed, and the event gave rise to so much controversy that a book and a film emerged as a result. It did not help matters that a similar tasting organised some years later by Gault Millau pitted Ch Latour and other great clarets against, among others, Torres Gran Coronas. The Spanish wine won. It is perhaps as good a tribute as any to the Torres family business that last year it won the “Most Admired Wine Brand in the World” award, conceded by a panel of 200 wine professionals for the publication Drinks International. It was in 1870 that Jaime Torres returned from Cuba to his native Cataluña having made his fortune, and joined his brother in a winemaking venture. The showpiece of the new bodega, built at Jaime’s insistence, was a 600,000-litre vat that at the time was the largest in the world, and in which King Alfonso XIII lunched during a visit to the bodega. It was later destroyed in the Spanish Civil War. This was a bad time for the Torres family. The Republican anarchists had taken over Cataluña, killing indiscriminately. Jaime’s son, Miguel Torres Carbó, survived by working as a pharmacist in Barcelona producing vaccines for the Republicans, but this did not stop the winery being compulsorily taken over by the workers, although in 1939 it was mostly destroyed, no doubt accidentally, by Franco’s air force. Miguel was briefly imprisoned but managed to flee to New York, where he was when the Second World War broke out. With the sudden drying up of French

110

wine exports to the USA, he cleverly built up a successful business selling Torres products to a winehungry nation. The trade has grown exponentially ever since. Even though the Spanish business was also blossoming, past experience had shown the family that if things can go wrong they generally will, so Miguel Sr despatched Miguel Jr (Miguel Torres, present chairman) to the New World. The resulting decision to set up an operation in Chile’s Central Valley, favouring it over California, was the right one, but back then it was a dicey move.

JULY AUGUST 5

Cuisine HL40.indd 110

30/06/15 18:42

Using new techniques such as stainless steel, temperature-controlled tanks, Torres bested the competition wherever it chose to make wine, and its subsequent acquisition of land in California in 1984 gave it an early foothold in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, later to become famous for its Pinots and Chardonnays. In Spain, with brands like Viña Sol, Coronas and Sangre de Toro established as best sellers, a policy of expanding to other wine regions led to an assertive expansion programme. Miguel Jr’s ambition though was to produce superior wine, and having studied oenology in France he successfully blended French and German grape varieties with the local stock. It is a happy coincidence that the German connection did not stop there. Miguel’s wife, Waltraud Maczassek, runs the Torres Foundation, created in 1986 and active around the world supporting people in need, particularly disadvantaged children. The firm’s commitment to the environment is total. It stopped using pesticides 20 years ago and CO2 emissions are reduced year by year. Once again the policy of prevention being better than cure has resulted in future vineyard plots being acquired further inland and at higher elevations, on the basis that one day the present lowland vineyards will be too warm for grapes. Miguel Torres’s sister Marimar runs the California operation with daughter Cristina, and their Chardonnays are undoubtedly among the world’s best. Back home Torres is now present in Conca de Barberà, Rías Baixas, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, Rioja, Rueda and Costers del Segre, as well as Vilafranca del Penedés and Catalunya. Exports go to more than 140 countries: 44 million bottles a year; €240 million in sales. The Jean Leon brand is part of the group and the justly popular Torres brandies can be found everywhere, as can the more recently introduced organic and alcohol-free varieties. Although it is not something that can be said about all wine ranges from a single bodega, in Torres’s case there is a consistency that only time and investment can achieve. Labels like Mas La Plana, Grans Muralles, Floralis, Gran Coronas, Milmanda, Santa Digna and Pazo Das Bruxas are a few examples of superb wines that are widely available internationally at reasonable prices. Medical Minutes CUTTING-EDGE ADVICE FOR HEALTHY LIVING

By John Schieszer

LIVING TO CELEBRATE YOUR 100TH BIRTHDAY It is believed that more and more people will be living to the age of 100, so scientists have been studying what may be the key to successful ageing and longevity. For the past 50 years researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden have followed the health of 855 Gothenburg men born in 1913. The study is now being wrapped up and it turns out that 10 of the individuals lived to 100. The volunteers in this study were surveyed at the ages of 54, 60, 65, 75, 80 and 100. This allowed the researchers to consider the factors that appear to promote longevity. A total of 27 per cent (232 individuals) of the original group lived to the age of 80 and 13 per cent (111 individuals) to 90. The researchers found that 42 per cent of deaths after the age of 80 were due to cardiovascular disease, 20 per cent to infectious diseases, eight per cent to stroke, eight per cent to cancer, six per cent to pneumonia and 16 per cent to other causes. A total of 23 per cent of the over-80 group were diagnosed with some type of dementia. The researchers visited seven of the centenarians at home and found that all of them were relatively healthy, satisfied with their circumstances, and pleased to be living where they were. “The unique design (of the study) has enabled us to identify the factors that influence survival after the age of 50,” said study investigator Lars Wilhelmsen, who is with the Sahlgrenska Academy in Gothenburg. “Our recommendation for people who aspire to centenarianism is to refrain from smoking, maintain healthy cholesterol levels and confine themselves to four cups of coffee a day.” BREAKFAST CONTENT COULD AFFECT BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS Individuals with type-2 diabetes have difficulty regulating their blood sugar levels, particularly after meals. However, a new study is suggesting that if an individual eats certain foods for breakfast they may be able to prevent blood sugar spikes at both breakfast and lunch.

“People often assume that their glucose response at one meal will be identical to their responses at other meals, but that really isn’t the case,” said American researcher Jill Kanaley, who is a professor and associate chair in the University of Missouri department of nutrition and exercise physiology in Columbia. “For instance, we know that what you eat and when you eat make a difference, and that if people skip breakfast their glucose response at lunch will be huge. In our study, we found those who ate breakfast experienced appropriate glucose responses after lunch.” Kanaley and her colleagues monitored type-2 diabetics’ levels of glucose, insulin and several gut hormones after breakfast and lunch. The participants ate either high-protein or high-carbohydrate breakfasts, and the lunch included a standard amount of protein and carbohydrates. The researchers found eating more protein at breakfast lowered individuals’ post-meal glucose levels. “The first meal of the day is critical in maintaining glycemic control at later meals, so it really primes people for the rest of the day,” Kanaley said. “Eating breakfast prompts cells to increase concentrations of insulin at the second meal, which is good because it shows that the body is acting appropriately by trying to regulate glucose levels.” She said different foods affect individuals differently, noting that for diabetics to really understand how they respond to different foods they need to consistently track their glucose levels. In addition, Kanaley said trigger foods might change depending on how physically active a person is or how long they have waited between meals. According to Kanaley, although it would be helpful for individuals with high blood sugar to eat more protein, they do not need to consume extreme amounts of protein to reap the benefits. “We suggest consuming 25 to 30 grams of protein at breakfast, which is within the range of the FDA recommendations.”

Sun Creams Are they all that they seem? By Rachel Garrod

The Costa del Sol is named after its abundance of sun, and during the summer months things get hotter and hotter. Whilst we all want to enjoy the weather, we would be wise to remember the principles of safe sunning: protect your head with a hat, stay out of the sun during its hottest period and wear plenty of sun cream. But are all sun creams delivering the protection they claim to? A recent report by consumer watchdog Which? highlighted some allegedly dubious players in the sun-care game. Which? tested several well-known sun creams claiming to provide sun protection factor (SPF) 30. They tested if the cream did in fact offer SPF 30 and also if it met the EU recommendation for protection against UVA rays; and finally they asked their participants to tell them how “pleasant” it was to apply. Four of the 25 brands tested were classified by Which? as “Don’t Buy” products. Two products from the Hawaiian Tropic range were reported to have failed to live up to their SPF 30 claim: the Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion and its Satin Protection Lotion. Piz Buin Ultra Light Dry Touch Sun Fluid also reportedly failed the SPF claim; and Boots Soltan Protect and Moisturise Lotion, both the SPF claim and the application test. It should be noted, however, that both Boots and Hawaiian Tropic have claimed all their products are rigorously tested and made statements disputing the report’s findings. Other critics have also argued that sun cream testing is generally

116

made after the application of a thick layer and people are not always as thorough in their application of cream as they could be. Which? did identify 11 “Best Buys” though, and Boots were back in favour with their Soltan Dry Touch Suncare lotion. Avon’s Sun Clear Spray was the top scorer for UVB, UVA and application, and products from the Nivea and Garnier Ambre range also did well. Morrisons’ M Sun Care Protect and Nourish Sun Spray was one of the cheapest tested and came out as a “Best Buy”, showing that paying a higher price for your sun cream doesn’t necessarily guarantee results. Avoiding sunburn is paramount in the fight against cancer, and applying a high factor sun cream is one of the best protections we can offer ourselves, so it’s essential that we can trust what it says on the bottle. However, we have a responsibility too: we need to apply the cream according to instructions and be sensible. Wearing hats, shirts and sunglasses will also help protect us, as will the shade. And seriously… who wants to have lunch in the blazing sun or a burnt back for that matter? Rachel Garrod PhD MSc is a physiotherapy lecturer and stop smoking counsellor Tel. Summer Fiesta of Polo

Sotogrande’s sporting and social agenda this summer will once again be highlighted by one of the world’s most prestigious international polo showpieces. The 44th Land Rover International Polo Tournament is the focal point from 28 July to 29 August, as the crème de la crème of Spanish society – joined by international celebrities – converge on the western Costa del Sol luxury resort. With its chic parties, “after polo” lounge, bar and discotheque, restaurant offering eco products, “food trucks experience for gastro-hunters”, beauty centre, diverse exhibitions, shopping village (with 40 retail brands), 8,000 square metre children’s activities area and nine polo fields, the Santa María Polo Club becomes a lively social and leisure hub every summer. The full summer polo season at Santa María begins on 1 July and continues until 6 September, with the centrepiece the Land Rover International. A premier event on the World Polo Tour, it attracts a total of 140 players – including most of the top-10, among them global polo star Adolfo Cambiaso – and 1,400 polo ponies, competing over 35 days of top competition culminating in the Bulgari Gold Cup. The Santa María Polo Club has also just received approval from the Junta de Andalucía (regional government) for the first phase of a major sports-tourism project in Sotogrande, comprising 50,000 square metres of green areas, a five-star hotel, quality development, premium residential plots near the polo fields, a spa and health club, a clubhouse, tertiary trade areas (offices, shops and restaurants), a business centre and a fluvial park. The plans for a second phase include an enlargement of the Sotogrande marina, while the overall project envisions creating an infrastructure for a future “macro equestrian and polo resort (in a countrified way)”, together with an “equine district” in the Valle del Guadiaro area. www.santamariapoloclub.com

Organised by New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and Centre National d’Art et de culture Georges Pompidou in Paris, this exhibition is a chronological presentation of the work of Jeff Koons. The Spanish debut of Jeff Koons: A Retrospective – on show at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao until 27 September and sponsored by the Fundación BBVA – provides a comprehensive survey of the artist’s work, “which speaks to us of self-acceptance, appreciation of the world around us, and the affirmation of being through art… an exhortation to live in this world as though it were our first day on the earth”. Koons is known for “rejecting the aura of inaccessibility that surrounds other contemporary works of art”, creating art that appeals to a broad cross-section of the public while drawing on such historical sources as Surrealism, Pop Art and Dadaism.

Ferrari 458 Speciale, 2014, Photo © G. Raupp

The name Pininfarina has been synonymous with Italian style for three generations. Over the past 85 years the Turin-based design company has moved on from its original focus on pacesetting car design to expand its creative influence in architecture, industrial design, mobility and sustainability. Examples of timeless Pininfarina creativity include the Cisitalia 202, whose trailblazing style was honoured by the Museum of Modern Art in New York as one of the eight most significant designs in the history of the automobile, and several legendary Ferrari models.

Snaidero Ola25 Limited Edition, Photo © Pininfarina

Its more recent portfolio continues to honour Pininfarina heritage in products ranging from sports equipment, machinery and furniture (including the Ola25 kitchen by Snaidero) to aircraft, yachts and trains, as well as hotel buildings and apartment houses in Miami, San Diego, Singapore and Sao Paulo. In Turin, Pininfarina provided the entire interior design for the award-winning Juventus football stadium, opened in 2011. Now this venerable history has been brought together in The Pininfarina Book by Günther Raupp, with a preface by Paolo Pininfarina and published by teNeues (www.teneus.com). HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Bromley Estates Marbella

Launch of Last Phase of Residencial Duquesa

Lifestyle Property Management

Creating Specific Management Packages The concept behind Lifestyle Property Management is exactly what is described in the name: i.e. a service designed to suit the needs and “lifestyle” of the owner. Their approach is to offer and design a specific management package for the owner, the property itself and how the client intends to use the property. As they explain, “If you are a homeowner who uses your property for holidays and for friends and family, your outlook and services required will be entirely different to that of a professional renter who views the property as a business and requires it to be treated as such. “However you intend to use your property, your approach, outlook and attitude to your property is unique; therefore your property management company should be working to the same goals.” Tel. Bromley Estates Marbella has joined forces with Spanish property developer Neinor Homes to become the exclusive promoter for the final phase of the Residencial Duquesa development. At the time of going to press, Bromley was set to release all 96 luxury apartments on to the market for sale, and open the show apartments for viewings. According to the real estate company, “The scarcity of apartments in such a coveted location – five minutes’ walk from Duquesa Marina and the beach – and the low starting price of just €142,000 (+IVA/VAT) is already attracting considerable interest. This is a sure sign that as soon as the units are available they will be snapped up quickly.” As director Hayley Bromley explained, “Brand new apartments of this calibre with the option of mountain and sea views, parking, storage and landscaped gardens in a great location are few and far between. In addition, the cost of living in the Duquesa port area is considerably lower than around the Costa del Sol’s more famous marinas such as Sotogrande and Puerto Banús, making it a win-win situation for anyone looking for an affordable sunshine lifestyle.” Bromley’s appointment as the sole agent for Residencial Duquesa follows its successful marketing campaign for another excellent development, Benalmádena Hill Views. The White House

Bespoke Designs with an International Flair Established in 2011 by Christina White, The White House bespoke interior design service creates exceptional residential and commercial projects for a wide range of international and local clients in Marbella and further afield. Swedish-born Christina has lived abroad since she was 19, in Berlin, Madrid, Los Angeles and the last 34 years in Marbella. She gained wide experience in the interior design industry for 13 years before opening The White House nearly four years ago. Her main objective is to treat each client “with lots of love and care” and listen to what they want. To that end, Christina can often be found in the showroom late at night, on weekends and holidays, or regularly attending trade shows to check out the latest interior design trends for inspiration (her favourite is Maison & Objet in Paris). As she speaks Swedish, Norwegian, Spanish, English, German and French, her clientele is truly international. “I myself feel totally international since I have lived abroad for so many years. As Scandinavian expats in Marbella, we have a special empathy for our overseas clientele and think nothing of going that extra mile.” Christina says she finds it a wonderful challenge creating different styles. “I do everything from extremely modern and minimalistic to more traditional, but my own style is very light and airy, soft tones, summery. Coming from a dark country I always long for the light, as most Scandinavians do.” Urb. Marbella Real, Local 19, Marbella Tel. The Farm

Honest Food in a Classic Marbella Setting

María and Elio arrived in Marbella a year ago and immediately fell in love with an ancient house in the Old Town that was home to the El Pozo Viejo restaurant now aptly named, The Farm. The property is one of the oldest in Marbella, dating to 1502 and featuring an attractive indoor patio and its original mediaeval-era well. Passionate about gastronomy and design, they renovated the interior, built furniture using recycled materials and transformed the patio into a magical garden area. One year on, The Farm is a culinary and cultural reference point in Marbella, with shows and live music, and a large variety of events; and their efforts have been rewarded by the public with the awarding of a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence.

The Farm offers Kilometre 0 organic ingredients – “slow food… from the farm to the table” – with guests enjoying the sensation of being transported to nearby vegetable gardens. With its fresh ambience and delicious flavours and aromas, The Farm is a mustvisit for diners seeking new experiences. Open every day 12 noon-midnight. The Farm Plaza Altamirano 3, Marbella Tel. ADVICE

Capital Gains Tax in Spain Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers Asociados

The following information has been compiled in reference to capital gains taxes that might arise from the sale of real estate in Spain. Which Spanish tax law is applicable if a non-resident sells his property in Spain? The Spanish capital gain tax that arises from the sale of a property for nonresidents is not subject to the rules of IRPF (income tax for individuals) but to the rules set forth in the law on IRNR (income tax for non-residents), known as the “Impuesto Sobre la Renta de No Residentes”. What is the major new tax introduced for non-residents in Spain? In order to facilitate the free circulation of citizens within the EU and EEE, a taxpayer who is a non-resident in Spain is allowed to be exempted from the tax on capital gains that arise from the sale of what was their habitual residence in Spanish territory, provided that this sum is being reinvested in a new habitual property. Nevertheless, the obligation of paying the three per cent remains valid. What are the tax rates in Spain? The tax on the capital gain obtained from selling property by non-residents without permanent establishment, whether individuals or legal entities, is 20 per cent in 2015 and will be reduced to 19 per cent in 2016.

138

In regards to the capital gains on selling elements of your equity, the percentage varies according to the year in which it becomes payable. As a guide, for year of reference… 2003-2006: 35 per cent 2007-2009: 18 per cent 2010-2011: 19 per cent 2012-2014: 21 per cent Finally, with regards to capital gains, always remember the following: • Application of the update coefficients, to correct the acquisition value of the property based on the date of purchase, has been removed. • The coefficient of “abatement” (“abatimiento”) is maintained. In order to apply these reduction coefficients, a maximum sale price of €400,000 for the property in Spain is required. Arcos & Lamers Asociados Avda. Ricardo Soriano, Marbella Tel.
