In recent months, 15 has become something of a mystical, albeit controversial, number in relation to urban planning. So what is all the fuss about? The number refers to “15-minute city”, a term coined by urbanist Carlos Moreno. According to Moreno, the concept is a means of improving people’s everyday way of life. It essentially relates to the requirements of modern urban development and the creation of communities that enable people to travel no more than 15 minutes – on foot or by bike – to access key amenities.

On the face of it, certainly no-one should have a serious issue with that admirable objective. But some do. So-called conspiracy theorists have accused Moreno, and supporters, of initiating a battle plan to eradicate cars, restrict people’s movement and take away personal freedoms – a claim he vehemently denies.

Speaking to Dezeen, he said, “My fight is not against the car. My fight is how could we improve the quality of life – and to improve the quality of life we need a city without zonification, with a lot of local services, with more natural ecology for reducing our CO2 emissions, to have more economical activities, and to develop more social inclusion, culture, education and public space.”

He also stressed that it is not necessarily about the number 15. “We could have 10, or 18, or 25, or 39. The question is not the time. The real question is a new model for urbanism.”

Several major cities around the world are already incorporating their own versions of the concept, including Málaga. Urban authorities in the Costa del Sol capital have mapped out a strategic plan for 2023 that envisages “15-minute suburbs” and a “45-minute metropolis”, and which encompasses 16 “star projects” covering such initiatives as sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, natural wealth, circular economy, and “green” and “blue” infrastructure.

Málaga is likely to be just the first of the Costa del Sol’s main urban centres announcing initiatives that adapt their own town planning models and incorporate the “15-minute city” concept.

Many are already well-placed to become pacesetters in this respect. The Coast’s key towns – highlighted by Nerja and Vélez-Málaga to the east and Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella, Estepona, Manilva and Sotogrande to the west – all have comprehensive and well-established infrastructures, from schools, health centres and leisure amenities to commercial complexes and business offices.

When it comes to our home décor and design sector, each town/city is also excellently serviced with modern and globally trend-setting furniture showrooms, design and architecture studios, construction companies and specialist furnishing/accessories outlets. Furthermore, they are conveniently accessible to homeowners and clients from neighbouring municipalities – in many cases within the crucial “15-minute” threshold.

A look through the professionals and businesses featured in this issue confirms that the Costa del Sol has the potential to evolve as a flagship network of “15-minute cities” catering for home makeovers and major refurbishments. Now we just have to convince the conspiracy theorists and other less strident doubters that the concept is in the everyday lifestyle interests of all – with no sinister connotations.

Looking further afield, at the sector in general, a hugely successful Salone del Mobile in Milan in April confirmed that the market is healthy and vibrant, with “bouclé” ever-present in the collections and the Chinese (in particular) out in force. In Madrid, the Casa Decor exhibition, which continues until 28 May, is also showcasing a positive vibe in the Spanish market – all of which augurs well for the rest of 2023.

STYLISH OUTDOOR SPACES

Our outdoor spaces really come to the fore as we enter the summer months. However, as this market is growing exponentially, it can be rather overwhelming to know where to start. Natural earthy colours in upholstery have been particularly popular recently but we have also seen a growing trend in warmer hues. As we become more aware of the environmental impact of materials, the increase in demand for sustainable outdoor furniture has prompted an upsurge in the use of bamboo and recycled, eco-friendly materials in new collections.

It is also not surprising that modular design is continuing to trend upwards, as it allows us to adapt furniture to accommodate the number of people present as well as to fit pieces conveniently within the space available. As lounging has moved in a more casual direction in recent years, low, oversized, curvy sofas and armchairs have taken the market by storm, and look like they are here to stay – offering both comfort and a more casual way of lounging. Mixing and matching styles has also become increasingly popular, with influences from traditional designs in countries far afield coming together to create an eclectic yet coordinated look. From Moroccan pouffes, rugs and cushions and Balinese daybeds to minimalist Scandinavian dining sets, there is plenty of inspiration out there. Whatever you decide to buy for your outdoor area, durability and resistance to harsh weather conditions is just as important as style, and is key to ensuring you can enjoy your outdoor space for years to come.

TRANSFORMING SPACES AND MOOD WITH LIGHTING

Lighting not only transforms living spaces but also our mood. Getting lighting right is a gamechanger and hiring a lighting designer is always going to be money well spent. Adding layers of light – not only in the home but also in your garden – adds depth and interest, but it needs to be well thought through.

You can make your lighting a focal point with sculptural or design lamps or keep your lighting just as an ambient or practical fixture. The placing of lighting is crucial to the overall look and feel of a space. For example, task lighting for reading or working in a kitchen should be placed in front so that you don’t cast a shadow over what you want to see. For cosy welcoming lighting in a living room, creating pockets of light is an easy way to add ambience. A statement chandelier always gives the wow-factor, providing a design-led addition to the space, even when not illuminated. However, you should first evaluate if the room can take such a bold fixture by considering the size of the space and the furniture within it. If it is a small area or a room with many items of furniture, a large pendant or chandelier can be overkill and visually make the room look cluttered.

When choosing the amount of lighting for a room, less is very often more. Analyse how much natural light you already have – after all, natural sunlight is usually the best lighting in a home – and then add what is necessary to best benefit the room when the sun goes down. Rooms that are mostly dark may not need to be blasted with a flat overhead light that will tend to make the room seem poorly planned and artificial. Instead, employ clever lighting solutions to give the space the appearance that it is illuminated naturally. Dimmers are a great way to control the amount of lighting in a room depending on the time of day so, if a lamp comes with this option, it is always wise to choose that model for optimum lighting results.

black, terracotta and grey, the collection now has two more colours within its portfolio: dark green and ochre (as shown here). Made from ceramic, which is a ductile, malleable material, it is then fused with different enamels to allow ceramist and designer Xavier Mañosa to discover and interpret new light effects. The interior part of the lamp comes in either a brilliant white enamel to further enhance the light or a 24-carat gold-plated version which emits a warmer illumination. The collection also offers the option of integrated LED technology, which projects warm indirect light without glare. Marset is available from Ges Lighting in Calle Uranio in Pol. Ind. SETTING THE TABLE IN STYLE

The world of tableware has been subject to many different trends over the years, influenced by changing tastes, materials and lifestyles. Today, in tune with growing awareness and concerns about environmental issues, there is an increasing trend towards more sustainable and eco-friendly tableware options – such as ceramic, glass, wood and recycled materials. Handcrafted and artisanal tableware, featuring unique designs and textures, is always a wonderful way to add a personal touch to the dining experience. Vintage and retro designs have also been making a comeback onto our tables, with bold and colourful patterns that add a touch of nostalgia and character to the table setting. Mixing and matching styles to create a personalised and eclectic look is another trend that has grown in popularity, providing a more casual look. However, the minimalist trend will always be a mainstay for many, featuring simple and elegant designs that focus on functionality and practicality. Have fun with your table settings by injecting your own personality through tableware that will enhance your lovingly prepared and served culinary delights.

SPECTACULAR LIVING ROOMS

A well-thought-out living room is essential for creating a comfortable and welcoming space for both family members and guests. This part of the home serves multiple functions, from being a place to relax and unwind to providing a space for entertaining and hosting gatherings. The living room is usually the first room that people see when they visit you, so it tends to set the tone for the rest of the home. Creating a comfortable atmosphere in terms of layout, seating, lighting and colour scheme is always a must, enabling you to enjoy the space to the maximum. Once you have decided on the style you want to reflect, there are many options to choose from that don’t necessarily have to break the bank to work well for your home. Modular sofas are always popular due to their versatility, the same as low, chunky sofas that offer more casual lounging. A statement armchair or coffee table can immediately add a designer touch to the room. Overall, a well-designed living room that is uncluttered but cosy is aesthetically calming and welcoming. Arguably, it is the most important area of the home, so consider the design well and it can make a huge difference to how you use and enjoy your home.

AFFECTION FOR REFLECTION

Mirrors can be quite transformational in interior design, serving both a functional and a decorative role. They are great for creating the illusion of space, as they can make a room look larger than it actually is by reflecting light and creating a sense of depth. This is particularly useful in small or cramped spaces. By serving as decorative elements in their own right, mirrors add an extra visual interest and focal point to the room. They can also be used to reflect other decorative elements in the space, such as artwork or plants. As mirrors reflect natural light, the space feels brighter and more welcoming – which is especially important in rooms that don’t receive much light from outside. Overall, mirrors can be a highly versatile and useful tool in interior design, helping to create a revitalised sense of space, light and balance in a room. Take a look at these ideas…

FEASTING YOUR EYES ON THE DINING AREA

The growing trend towards using sustainable and natural materials in dining room design has been driven by a desire to be more environmentally conscious, as well as a preference for warm, organic textures and finishes. Natural materials such as wood, stone and metal are becoming increasingly popular. Similarly, dining tables that combine different materials – such as wood and metal, or stone and glass – are also trending, adding visual interest to the table and creating an attractive focal point in the room.

Minimalist dining sets with clean lines look stunning and are especially prevalent among Scandinavian design collections. While natural and neutral colours are always popular, dining tables in bold, and even very dark, tones bring a whole different look – drawing focus and making a design statement. The standard rectangular table with four straight and slender legs has evolved, with forward-thinking design brands producing unusual-shaped tabletops and sculptural bases with an impressive visual impact.

The growing trend towards casual dining rooms has led to more comfortable seating options like upholstered chairs and benches, as well as the incorporation of cosy accessories such as area rugs, soft lighting and decorative accents to create a welcoming atmosphere. The dining area tends to be a versatile and much-visited part of your living space, where you not only dine but also come together to chat, have drinks, play games and even work. So it is important to put some careful thought into this area of your home so that everyone can enjoy it – for all its diverse roles.

SOPHISTICATED ROOMS WITH A HIDDEN SECRET

We are all intrigued by secrets. In a leisure context on the Costa del Sol, the burgeoning popularity of “escape rooms” for an evening’s entertainment with friends is testament to that – even if those who suffer from claustrophobia might prefer to wait outside in the bar while the mysteries are solved. Similarly, in our homes, many owners are now incorporating “panic rooms” which can also be transformed into longer-term “survival rooms” for people who – post-pandemic – have deeper concerns about their family’s safety. When buying a new home, or refurbishing an old basement, incorporating such a space of refuge and security is becoming almost as de rigueur as having a wine cellar, a cinema room or a home gym/spa.

Now, Marbella-based interior design company Omeo has taken our fascination with secrets and hidden spaces to a new level of intrigue.

“We love introducing exciting new design concepts into your home,” they explain. “Designing secret doorways that lead into hidden rooms and nooks. Clean walls that lead to hidden rooms such as a vault, reading nook, children’s playroom, home library, home office, wine cellar, etc. These hidden doors can also turn into secret corridors or halls that connect the house’s interior with the outdoors.”

Secret TV Shelf: Eight black-slatted wood panels that create a simple and practical cover of the TV, and seamlessly blend into the adjacent bookshelves when opened.

Secret Stone Wall: A secret door built using sandstone which, once open, is camouflaged in the wall as a puzzle piece that fits into the natural stone and leads into a gym and spa.

Bookshelf Door: A luxurious, bespoke bookshelf that can be opened to reveal a hidden door leading to a renovated bar and a second living room area.

These examples highlight only a few of Omeo’s secret spaces. Together with their secret Mirror Wall, which hides the entrance to a “man cave” and pri-

vate master suite, their portfolio also includes a customised kitchen with a concealed wine and cava cooler. An essential feature in each Omeo project is their Electrical Systems/Secret Artwork, which incorporates artwork to conceal all electrical systems in the home. All of Omeo’s secret spaces are custom-designed to fit perfectly into the home’s existing décor, ensuring both practicality and excitement for homeowners and guests.

Full-Service, Bespoke and Sustainable Interior Design

Omeo specialises in renovation and new-build construction projects, offering bespoke designs that are “tailored to each client’s desired lifestyle and curated with uncompromised attention to detail, providing a stellar design experience”.

In addition to original designs and concepts, founder and creative director Olivia O. and her highly skilled and experienced Omeo team create one-ofa-kind furnishings and objects to complete specific spaces – highlighted by a balance of modern elements, stylish accessories, and custom-designed and crafted furniture.

Omeo is firmly committed to sustainability “Every element of both our commercial and residential interiors is carefully developed and thoughtfully executed, and is the product of a planning process that ensures that choices made reflect our passion for sustainable design.

“We are continuously researching earth-friendly and sustainable materials that don’t only make our designs look and feel good, but also do good by giving back and supporting the local communities while not harming our nature.”

TRANSFORMATIVE FABRICS

Adding fabrics to a room gives the space warmth and ambience and elevates the look by creating a more finished aesthetic. If a room feels empty and a little unwelcome, fabrics can be impressively transformative. Patterns provide an artistic statement while soft plains add subtle warmth. As a rule, good-quality fabrics make a room feel more luxurious, and this doesn’t mean glossy velvets… linens, polyester and cotton, used for the correct task in hand, can be highly effective for the interior design as a whole. Whether you want to change-up some cushions or curtains, or take on the challenge of upgrading a much-loved furniture item by upholstering it, the world of fabrics is vast. Therefore, it is always advisable to consult an expert as to which material is best for the job, so that you make a wise investment – then let your imagination go wild. Here are some ideas…

WALLS WITH A DESIGNER TOUCH

Wallpapers have become increasingly popular in recent years and the main reason for this is no doubt down to how the industry has evolved so quickly. Now we are being offered indulgent textures, colours and patterns that, hands down, can transform any room into a sensation, adding ambience and a designer touch.

The trend to refer back to nature is relentless, and rightly so because, when you get it right, earthy tones, botanical prints and natural materials such as bamboo and raffia give a calming feeling when you enter the living space.

Metallic touches have also become more prevalent in recent collections, adding a glamorous look to rooms. Wallpaper giants Élitis, Casamance and Black Edition are just some of the brands that have embraced metallics with spectacular designs to provide the wow-factor for any home.

Opposite Page Arte drew inspiration for its Sculptura Rovine collection (shown here in the Denim Blue colourway) from traditional plasterwork. A PASSION FOR HIGH-END KITCHEN DESIGN

How and when was Decodan Studio launched?

After finishing my studies in economics and business studies in Italy, I moved to the Costa del Sol where in 2007 I started off in a small self-employed business located in Estepona. There, working alone, I carried out all the business activities: customer service, budgeting, home measurements, loading and unloading material, assembly, after-sales, etc.

At the beginning it was really hard, coinciding with the financial crisis. However, thanks to great dedication and constant effort, year after year we have achieved improved objectives and results, gradually expanding the company with new staff and new infrastructure, until Decodan Studio SL became what it is today: a team of 10 professionals (including architects, interior designers, sales staff and installers) and two showrooms of about 200 square metres each (located in Marbella and Estepona).

What encouraged you to open your new showroom in Marbella?

Over the past five to six years, the high-end market in Marbella has comprised an increasing proportion of turnover in our company, so Decodan’s commitment to Marbella has always been very clear. We strengthened our physical presence by initially opening a showroom in a design centre located on the Golden Mile, where we shared space with professionals from various sectors, all related to high-quality housing.

Due to continuous growth, at the end of 2022 we decided to move and open a new showroom of our own to give greater visibility to our firm and provide

better service to our clients and collaborators. It was clear to us that we should maintain our location in the Golden Mile area, the nerve centre of the Costa del Sol’s architecture and interior design sector.

The new studio, located opposite the Palacio de Congresos, has a surface area of around 200 square metres, including indoor and outdoor kitchens and customer service. Soon we will start on a remodelling of the interior design, which will bring with it a major aesthetic transformation and enhanced quality, with plans to finish the work before summer.

Where does your passion for kitchen design come from?

To be honest, I can’t really say that it came from a vocational passion. My decision to study business economics was because I liked the business world and, although I have always been attracted to design and decoration, I would never have imagined that this would become my profession.

Entering this sector has been one of the best choices of my life (along with others!). To create a company from scratch and be successful clearly takes a lot of effort, but I don’t think it’s possible to achieve this without having a high degree of passion.

I am passionate about the fact that people open the doors of their home to me to make their dream come true: i.e. decorating their home. For me it is a wonderful challenge that I embark on with great enthusiasm, and I try to transform their dream into a project tailored to their needs, so that they can enjoy their home for years to come.

Tell us more about the craftsmanship of your kitchens…

At Decodan, apart from being distributors of major international kitchen brands (such as Leicht and Arredo3), we have a totally personalised product line, which allows us to respond to any type of requirement requested by clients.

Thanks to the presence of highly qualified personnel in the company, we are able to create customised kitchens and use non-standard materials: for example, we use natural stone, porcelain tiles, micro-cement and high-quality metals in our furniture.

In addition, our manufacturing flexibility allows us to adapt to the latest interior design trends, where open kitchens are integrated using the same materials as in the rest of the home.

What are Decodan Studio’s main plans for the future?

Our main objective for the future is to continue consolidating Decodan Studio within the high-end housing sector on the Costa del Sol, and to invest in the development of new projects at a national and international level.

We are passionate about design and decoration, and this is what we will continue to do for many years to come, retaining the values that characterise us: seriousness, honesty and professionalism.

EVER-EVOLVING KITCHEN DESIGN

As the kitchen’s main purpose has evolved from simply a functional space to the social hub of the home, it is hugely important to update this area of the house in a way that both reflects your individual design style and accommodates your practical requirements. From sleek contemporary designs to rustic and more natural styles, the kitchen sector is an exciting one, offering a vast range of interesting materials, clever gadgetry and storage solutions to make the space look and work best for the homeowner. Organised spaces with uncluttered surfaces are never more important than in the kitchen, where hygiene must be at its peak and you need to have the ability to work effectively in order to concoct your gastronomic creations. Natural and organic elements that bring a sense of tranquillity have become increasingly popular in recent times, as the trend for bringing the outdoors inside has gained momentum. With advancing technology and growing environmental awareness, smart and sustainable solutions have become key kitchen trends. Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to make their kitchens eco-friendly and energy-efficient. This can include using energy-saving appliances, incorporating smart home technology for controlling lights and appliances, and opting for sustainable materials such as bamboo or recycled glass for countertops and backsplashes. Water-saving faucets and fixtures are also gaining popularity, helping to reduce water consumption and lower utility bills.

STYLING YOUR BATHROOM

The bathroom is not an obvious area of the home for showcasing your style. However, there is nothing like a beautiful, clean and tranquil bathroom to impress guests when they come to visit, as well as a place for you to feel ultimately relaxed in your own personal space – to refresh and pamper yourself. Bathrooms have morphed over the years into veritable spa areas, with the likes of wet rooms, rain showers and luxurious bathtubs. To elevate your bathroom, it is not always necessary to embark on a huge and expensive reform. Sometimes, just adding an oversized round mirror or changing up your washbasin or faucets can make a real impact. Cabinetry is hugely important for storing away towels and toiletries and maintaining the space organised and free of clutter.

While white has often been a go-to in bathrooms, giving the sense of freshness and cleanliness, now we are seeing darker colours, especially earthy tones, creeping into this area of the home. The addition of more sultry hues and natural materials such as stone, wicker baskets and botanicals can transform your bathroom into a stylishly spa-like space. Take a look at these ideas…

THREE LIMITED EDITION DESIGN CONCEPTS FROM WIESMANN

Luxury German car manufacturer Wiesmann has launched a new era for the company with Project Thunderbolt. Described as “the world’s first all-electric convertible roadster”, the car made its debut at last month’s Salon Privé London automotive event at Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Devised as a modern interpretation of Wiesmann’s iconic design language, and an evolution of the brand’s 35-year history, Project Thunderbolt features a classic two-seat, rear-wheel-drive configuration, lightweight carbon fibre construction and state-of-the-art electric powertrain.

Two electric motors have been packaged in a rear-mid mounted position, with a targeted total output of 500kW (680hp) and 1,100 Nm of instant torque to deliver a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) acceleration time of 2.9 seconds. Powering the motors is a 800-volt, 92kWh lithium-ion battery pack that enables a targeted range of 500 kilometres (WLTP) as well as the convenience of “super-fast charging” of up to 300kW (DC).

Three limited edition design concepts have been developed “to inspire clients as they begin their own co-creation journey… (with) endless opportunities for bespoke personalisation. Highlighting three very different facets to

the brand, the designs showcase the many individual and versatile ways in which Project Thunderball can be made individual to every client.” This is how Wiesmann describes each concept…

Design Concept One

“The very essence of convertible motoring, inspired by the moment in time when you and your car become one. A bespoke ocean blue metallic paint exterior was created to evoke the warm coastal waters and endless skies of the Mediterranean summer. A luxurious interior finished in the finest vibrant orange leathers with soft-touch cream canvas accents and high gloss teak accents all blend seamlessly to conjure the image and setting of a Saint Tropez beach.”

Design Concept Two

“Inspired by the Roaring Twenties Gatsby era, when optimism for the future was symbolised by the pure pleasure of driving. The Roaring Twenties were an age of Modernism, with an optimism for the future, with these feelings

reflected in a new spirit of motoring, one that was just as much about the pleasure of driving as it was the necessity of travel. An exterior finished in a bold golden hue, with a grille to match, contrasts with a deep burgundy leather interior with hints of matte soft-touch velvet details.”

Design Concept Three

”Like a stealth shadow across the sky, she slides silently into view. Inspired by the dark night and heroes of the darkness, the third design is finished in an exquisite matt black exterior, beautifully highlighted with black gloss details, creating the ultimate menacing presence. The interior showcases the purpose and power of the vehicle with matt black leather contrasted with anodised detailing and gloss carbon fibre surrounds to create an evocative and emotional driving experience.”

Wiesmann was founded in 1988 by brothers Martin and Friedhelm Wiesmann, with the philosophy of producing “bespoke sports cars that defied the norm”. In 2016, the Berry family acquired Wiesmann, and brothers Roheen and Sahir

have been committed to continuing the founders’ pioneering vision – “creating unbounded automotive masterpieces” as one of Europe’s last remaining independent sports car producers. Since 2008, every Wiesmann car has been built at the factory in Dülmen (Germany).

“Project Thunderball is the latest pioneering development in the Wiesmann story,” said owner and CEO Roheen Berry. “It has been incredibly exciting collaborating with the team at Studiokurbos through the entire design process. Project Thunderball celebrates Wiesmann’s rich past and uncompromising craftsmanship, incorporating the most iconic design elements from the MF3, MF4 and MF5, to celebrate our rich heritage, while looking to the future by featuring the latest technology and innovation.”

Prices start from €300,000, a waiting list is now open, and deliveries are due to start in 2024.

EXCITING NEW VENUE FOR DINERS AND BAR-GOERS IN ALOHA

The newly-opened Nomad restaurant, nestled in the heart of the elegant residential area of Aloha in Marbella’s Nueva Andalucía, has prompted great intrigue among locals during its creation.

This well-known Andalucian villa, which has housed several popular restaurants over the years, has been put through a dramatic transformation thanks to the expertise of interior designers and building engineers Ángela and María Pérez-Hick. The two-sister team from StudioHick set out to create a unique and sophisticated, yet bold and unbridled, design and architectural statement.

The extensive renovation was completed surprisingly fast, with every small detail meticulously covered. We were shown around the venue by Ángela and María, who explained the ideology behind their design concept… “We were so grateful that our clients were open to our unrelenting sugges-

tions and let us have free reign to turn our dreams and crazy ideas into a reality. We always aim to create spaces that offer great experiences, so when we are given a restaurant we always feel immensely inspired creatively. We were particularly in awe of the beautiful surroundings and view, so this had to play a large part in how we approached the design. That is why we have purposely designed the restaurant to connect the indoors with the outdoors, creating an exotically colourful yet earthy aesthetic which is in tune with the venue’s stunning natural setting.”

From the valet car park at street level, you enter Nomad by going up steps to the reception entrance, where the expansive main restaurant and dining terrace are adjoining. There is also another floor above with a lounge and bar area that offer further impressive views out to Royal Las Brisas golf course, and an attractive outdoor area to relax al fresco over drinks.

The design of the restaurant is eclectic yet well thought-out. The general ambience that has been successfully created at Nomad is fun and energetic, with the iconic Shadowy Moroso armchair greeting you at the reception area, for example, and the bathrooms highlighted by playful Seletti monkey lamps.

The fabrics used for the upholstery (all designer, we should note, from the likes of Dedar, Élitis and James Malone) depict bold animal prints, rich colours and lots of textures for a refined and eye-catching look. In stark contrast, there is also a calming element to the design, with handmade woven lamps especially made for the venue by artisans, traditional tiles, natural wooden ceiling panels, shade sails and an abundance of plants – including a huge 250-year-old bonsai-style olive tree that adds a delightful natural aesthetic. Executive chef Alexandru Craciun, who has worked for Michelin-star res-

taurants all over the world, has created a highly contemporary menu that caters for an international crowd. Alongside Alexandru is David Trullo, their highly-experienced sommelier, who has curated an extensive wine list to complement the menu, with every dish celebrating natural ingredients and accentuated by wonderfully creative presentations.

The Nomad restaurant opening hours are from 12 noon to 11pm and the Nomad Lounge is open from 7pm to 2am. STELLAR GREEN CREDENTIALS OF SPAIN’S “CAVIAR CHEF”

Diego Gallegos has been popularly known as the “Caviar Chef” for over a decade, but perhaps now it would be even more fitting to recognise him as Spain’s preeminent “Green Chef”.

His Sollo restaurant in the five-star Hotel Higuerón Curio Collection by Hilton in Fuengirola has a Michelin star, two Repsol “soles” and, most importantly and significantly, Michelin’s highly-coveted “Green” star.

Sollo was one of the first restaurants in Spain to receive that latter distinction which, according to Michelin, evokes nature and recognises and gives visibility to restaurants that share the guide’s “commitment to sustainability in the gastronomic field, respect the rhythms of nature, and strive to innovate by implementing initiatives that preserve the environment through resource management and waste disposal”.

That philosophy is eminently notable in the case of Diego Gallegos. His “gastro-aquaponics” garden (a fusion of gastronomy and water farming) and R&D laboratory in the Hilton grounds produces 90 per cent of the products used in the Sollo kitchen.

In a closed loop (recirculating 12,000 litres of water), Diego symbiotically farms 14 different species of freshwater fish (including – intriguingly – piranhas), as well as 2,000 varieties of artisanal plants.

In his early years on the Costa del Sol, Diego – who was born in Brazil, and has a Peruvian mother and Spanish (Cádiz area) grandfather – obtained the “Caviar Chef” moniker as a result of his extensive research into the recovery of Andalucian sturgeons. He still uses caviar as his star product, sourced from the flagship Ríofrio farm outside Málaga.

At the time established in a different location in nearby Benalmádena, Sollo received its Michelin star in late-2015 (for the 2016 guide) and the “Green” star when it was first awarded to Spanish restaurants in 2020 (and included in the 2021 guide).

Dining at Sollo is a highly exclusive affair, with capacity for only 14 people (20 in the warmer months when the terrace is open), served by nine highly talented and professional staff. The restaurant is only open in the evenings, five days a week, so reservations are imperative.

Understandably, there are many South American influences in Sollo’s cuisine, combined with Mediterranean flavours. This is reflected in Diegos’s new “Caminho 2023” menu, which provides diners with a sumptuous culinary experience that adds a distinctive creative dimension to classic Michelin dishes (and traditional wines).

The Caminho menu includes appetisers of “green star”, smoked tarpon meringue, seaweed taco and carp, pike tartlet in marinade and roe, and barbel macarons. The starters (with caviar) are Russian-style caviar, almond and smoked cauliflower, seasoned cold soup, and catfish and white butter sauce. For the main courses… tilapia in hot ceviche, organic trout, Iberian ham consommé and roasted garlic, and sturgeon, foie gras and root vegetable cream.

There is no bread on the menu, so diners are able to keep the calories under control and leave room for dessert, which includes mazamorra and purple corn juice, seasonal fruit, and honey, yoghurt and citrus, followed by petits fours sweets and herbal tea from Diego’s aquaponic system.

As for future plans, Diego and the hotel are completing work – in collaboration with Fuengirola town hall – on an even more elaborate gourmet greenhouse and market garden installation, which is due to be fully open after summer. One of the main aims is to make an ongoing contribution to promoting sustainability for future generations, while also giving the area an innovative new tourist-orientated attraction.

RED TUNA TARTARE AND FRIED RICE CREATION

If you ever wondered where we get our delicious signature red tuna from, the answer is… directly from Barbate. The Atlantic bluefin tuna can be seen off the Atlantic coast of Cádiz province after May’s first full moon. Their arrival is a cause for celebrations and tuna food festivals in the villages of Barbate, Tarifa, Zahara de los Atunes and Conil de la Frontera – the last towns in Spain where these ocean giants are still caught by hand with “almadraba” trap nets. Besides being the largest species of tuna, it is also one of the most desired red tuna in the world. This issue I am featuring one of the newest food trends, red tuna tartare on fried sushi rice, where only your imagination sets the limit. The dish can also be made with fresh salmon, if you can’t get your hands on the delicious red tuna.

Red Tuna Tartare (serves 4 people)

300 gr. bluefin red tuna from Barbate

½ dl. soya sauce spoon of acacia honey juice from ½ lime

½ teaspoon ground ginger root touch of chilli spices or chilli oil salt, pepper and roasted sesame seeds

Cut the red tuna into smaller pieces and marinate with all the ingredients for half an hour in the fridge. You can also add some mango right before serving, to make it more exotic.

Avocado Mix: 3 avocados

¼ finely-chopped red onion lime and chopped jalapeños to taste spoon of Greek yoghurt (without sugar)

Peel and smash the avocados together with the onion, jalapeños and yoghurt, and season with salt and pepper.

Fried Sushi Rice:

5 dl. sushi rice

½ dl. rice vinegar

1 spoon sugar and touch of salt sunflower oil to fry

I promise you, this is going to be your new favourite rice creation. Boil the sushi rice according to the instructions. Then add the vinegar, sugar and salt and mix until it becomes super sticky. Place in a pan with baking paper and flatten it out to three centimetres thick. Place baking paper on top and another pan on top, to put pressure on the rice. Put it into the freezer to rest for half an hour. When the rice is chilled, cut it into rounds or squares. Heat the oil and deep fry the rice until it is light golden and crunchy on both sides.

If you have ever wondered why rice vinegar is necessary for sushi rice, it is to reduce the pH level of the rice – and it also makes the rice a bit stickier and more flavourful.

Plate the fried sushi rice and make a small tower with layers of the avocado mix and red tuna tartare. Sprinkle the top with your choices of fresh watercress or micro salad leaves, chopped spring onions and crunchy nori, roasted sesame seeds or – like we love it – spiced up with chilli threads and ginger-pickled jalapeños, served with seaweed salad on the side. Enjoy the spices of life…

PAIRING WINE AND CHEESE

Even though you might love a specific wine and cheese separately, not every wine and cheese pairs well together.

The best pairings balance out the acidity, weight, boldness of flavour, and saltiness or sweetness – while the worst can leave a bitter taste in your mouth. The tricky part is that your personal taste also plays a role. One common practice is to combine only one type of wine with many different cheeses, and it’s hard to find a “one fits all” wine in this jungle of textures, flavours and aromas.

Here are a few pairings that work well together, to help guide you when planning your next wine and cheese night…

Dry Champagne: Brie, Camembert

Demi-sec Champagne: Roquefort

Dry rosé sparkling: Gruyere, Chèvre

Light-style Pinot grigio: fresh Mozzarella

Fuller-body Pinot grigio: aged Ricotta

Sauvignon Blanc: any goat’s cheese

Chardonnay- like Chablis: Camembert, Brie

Oaked Chardonnay: Cheddar, Gruyere, Gouda

Dry Riesling: Edam, Raclette, Emmental

Semi-sweet full-body Riesling: Roquefort, Gorgonzola

Dry or off-dry rosé wines: Cantal, aged Manchego

Young Tempranillo: young Manchego

Aged or bolder Tempranillo: aged Manchego

Sangiovese (like a classic Chianti): Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano

Full-body Cabernet Sauvignon: Cheddar, Gloucester

Off-dry Cabernet Sauvignon or New World Cab: Stilton

Nebbiolo (like a Barolo): Pecorino with truffles or Parmigiano Reggiano

Rhône blend-wines: Cantal, Camembert, Comté

Albariño: Burrata, Manchego

Verdejo: any goat’s cheese

As you can see there are many great pairings, but there are also many variations in the style of winemaking and the different grapes. I strongly recommend having several wines prepared for your cheese night, to match distinctive styles of flavours. I hope you will be able to find your new favourite match.

ANANTARA AND EL LAGO PRESENTATION OF NEW SEASONAL MENUS

Two of the Costa del Sol’s top restaurants have updated their menus for spring and early-summer. La Loggia at the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís Marbella Resort and El Lago in Elviria (Marbella) are offering diners a new selection of dishes that showcase their respective commitments to seasonal ingredients while also catering for lighter and more informal tastes at this time of the year.

La Loggia, open throughout the day and the main restaurant of five at the luxurious resort, has been featuring asparagus as its showpiece lunchtime ingredient this spring. From 1 May, the Italian restaurant will be turning its attentions to another seasonal favourite, red tuna, which will also be available at the By The Sea Beach Club until 12 June.

The resort’s comprehensive dining options include everything from a breakfast buffet and Andalucian aperitifs to healthy Mediterranean and Japanese haute cuisine, as well as vegan dishes and children’s menus. Meanwhile, the Michelin-star El Lago has introduced a special new menu for diners wanting to enjoy lighter lunchtime dishes than the normal evening tasting menus (which were highlighted in the March-April issue).

Chef Fernando Villasclaras has created the “Midi” menu, which includes snacks, tapas and “bocados” (bite-sized appetisers) to share, plus a selection of classic dishes.

The “Midi” menu is available from Tuesday to Sunday, 12.30 to 5.30 pm, and is ideal for informal lunches, business meetings, family and friends’ celebrations, and corporate events.

TRAVEL

& CUISINE SUSTAINABLE GOURMET CUISINE IN A FIVE-STAR SETTING

Food lovers who like to combine travel with a novel gourmet dining experience have the opportunity to enjoy an exceptional gala tasting on the Costa del Sol this year.

After a successful launch in 2022, the “Diego and Friends” series of events will return to the five-star Higuerón Hotel Curio Collection by Hilton in Fuengirola in May.

Created and hosted by Diego Gallegos, owner and chef of Michelin-star restaurant Sollos (see À La Carte feature on P. 182), the initiative brings together 12 national and international chefs for six evening gourmet tastings at the hotel, as well as show cooking forums on sustainable gastronomy in Málaga and Fuengirola.

The day-time forums are for professionals and local hospitality academy students, but the gourmet tastings are open to all interested diners, with each sitting limited to an exclusive group of around 65.

The hotel (pictured above, with Diego Gallegos) is preparing special packages for visitors – and local residents from other parts of the Coast – who would like to stay the night after the gala dinners.

Diego has brought together six top chefs from Spain (all of whom also run Michelin-star establishments) and six award-winning chefs from Latin America and Portugal. Each separate tasting will be created and prepared by two of the chefs together with Diego.

The six pairings are: Iván Cerdeño and Inés Páez (26 May), Miguel Ángel de la Cruz and Fernando Rivarola (9 June), Martina Puigvert and Francisco Ruano

(22 September), Maca de Castro and Joäo Rodrigues (27 October), Rodrigo de la Calle and Randy Siles (10 November), and Pepe Solla and Edgar Núñez (1 December).

Like Diego, all of the chefs have a similarly strong commitment to sustainability and “kilometre zero-sourced” products.

Provided by the Moët Hennessy Group, the selection of wines, champagnes and liquors will include: Chandon Garden Spritz, Termes Tinto from Bodegas Numanthia, The Pale Rosé by Sacha Lichine, Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial and Belvedere vodka.

Announcing details of the event, Diego Gallegos, who also oversees the hotel’s more informal Arara Bistro Bar, with its colourful South American-style ambience, said, “I am thrilled with the idea of cooking again with my colleagues. It means a lot to me to be able to host another edition of this project with 12 chef friends. Having them come to my ‘home’ and bring their gastronomy to our town, Fuengirola, is also a great opportunity for my clients to taste their exceptional cuisine.”

The Higuerón Hotel Curio Collection by Hilton said it shared Gallegos’ passion for gastronomy and his commitment to sustainability. “In this resort, the emphasis is on local ingredients, respect for nature and symbiosis with the environment.”

DEPRESSION AND DEMENTIA

MEDICAL MINUTES WITH JOHN SCHIESZER

Walking Away from Depression

Researchers at the University of South Australia are calling for exercise to be a mainstay approach for managing depression, as a new study shows that physical activity is 1.5 times more effective than counselling or the leading medications.

Published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, it was the most comprehensive study to date, encompassing 97 reviews conducted by researchers, 1,039 trials and 128,119 participants. It showed that physical activity is extremely beneficial for improving symptoms of depression, anxiety and distress. Specifically, it showed that exercise interventions that were 12 weeks or shorter were the most effective at reducing mental health symptoms, highlighting the speed at which physical activity can make a change. The largest benefits were seen among people with depression, pregnant and postpartum women, healthy individuals, and people diagnosed with HIV or kidney disease. According to the World Health Organisation, one in every eight people worldwide (970 million people) live with a mental disorder.

Lead researcher Dr. Ben Singh said physical activity must be prioritised to better manage the growing cases of mental health conditions. “Physical activity is known to help improve mental health. Yet, despite the evidence, it has not been widely adopted as a first-choice treatment.”

The researchers found that all types of physical activity and exercise were beneficial, including aerobic exercise such as walking, resistance training, Pilates and yoga. “Importantly, the research shows that it doesn’t take much for exercise to make a positive change to your mental health,” said Dr. Singh.

Vitamin D Supplements May Help Ward Off Dementia

Be sure to know what your vitamin D levels are and if necessary take supplements. That is the latest message from researchers at the University of Calgary in Canada and the University of Exeter in the UK.

They explored the relationship between vitamin D supplementation and dementia in more than 12,388 participants of the US National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center. The participants were on average 71 years old and were dementia-free when the study began. Of the group, 37 per cent (4,637) took vitamin D supplements.

In the study, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring, the team found that taking vitamin D was associated with living dementia-free for longer, and they also found 40 per cent fewer dementia diagnoses in the group who took supplements. In this study, 2,696 participants progressed to dementia over 10 years and 2,017 (75 per cent) had no exposure to vitamin D throughout all visits prior to dementia diagnosis.

While vitamin D was effective in all groups, the team found that effects were significantly greater in females, compared to males. Similarly, effects were greater in people with normal cognition, compared to those who reported signs of mild cognitive impairment.

Most vitamin D is produced as a natural by-product of the skin’s exposure to sunlight. It can also be found in fish liver oil, eggs and fatty fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel.

HOW BENDY DO I NEED TO BE?

Most of us recognise the importance of stretching our muscles, but how much do we really need to do? On the one hand, as we age, muscles, tendons and ligaments become less flexible. This can have negative impacts on our posture and balance, in extreme cases affecting our ability to perform tasks such as bending to tie shoes or to pick up objects. Obviously this level of stiffness in our soft tissues is not healthy, but do we really need to practise daily stretching?

For many years we were taught that stretching prior to a work-out was necessary to avoid injury or stiffness. However, studies now suggest that the rate of injuries is largely unaffected by a pre-work-out stretch routine, and a gentle active warm-up may be more useful instead. This could involve taking long strides prior to a hike or some gentle moves to loosen the joints and limbs prior to a gym work-out.

But stretching, especially after a period of rest or inactivity, does feel good. I am regularly amused by my dog, who always takes a deep stretch after a sleep. This type of stretching is called pandiculation, and is thought to help the muscle “wake up” after inactivity. Whilst stretching pre- exercise may not be as beneficial for reducing injury as was once thought, there are some interesting and important health benefits to flexibility.

Poor performance on a “Sit and Reach” test is associated with arterial stiffness – a significant risk factor for heart disease. Studies now show that stretching our muscles can in fact reduce this arterial stiffness, thereby potentially reducing cardiac disease.

However, what we really need is to be flexible “enough”, and that means “functionally flexible”. Obviously, the elite climber needs significantly more flexibility in their legs and arms than the average person who just needs to be supple enough to climb stairs and hills without tension or stiffness.

It may be more useful to think of functional stretching rather than a stretching programme. For instance, when cleaning, purposefully stretch the arms to their limit; or, when moving, stretch or bend into that movement just a little more than it strictly requires. When picking up something from the floor, squatting on your haunches can be a great stretch for releasing sitting-related stiffness. Ultimately a lack of movement is the main determinant of stiffness, rather than a lack of stretching per se.

The upshot is that being flexible is a good thing. We don’t need to be contortionists, and we don’t need to spend hours pre or post-exercise stretching. But we need to move – to move freely and into the tension. Move, stretch, move…

ICONIC MADRID SETTING FOR 2023 EDITION

The inaugural Casa Decor in 1992 was in Madrid’s Barrio de Salamanca, and since then another dozen editions have been held in the emblematic suburb. These have included such classic settings as Calle de Goya, Calle de Velázquez, Paseo de Recoletos, Paseo de la Castellana, Calle del Príncipe de Vergara and Calle de Jorge Juan. But never Calle Serrano – until now. This year’s 58th edition – which was launched in April and continues until 28 May – has been set up in a building at 92 Calle Serrano, on the semi-corner with Calle de Juan Bravo.

The choice was not coincidental, according to the organisers. “It was chosen with the intention of hosting a luxury edition in one of the capital’s most iconic

commercial arteries. This means the edition is naturally integrated into the exclusive setting of Madrid’s Golden Mile.”

Showcasing new trends in interior décor, design and lifestyle, Casa Decor has over the years displayed 2,492 projects designed by more than 3,100 professionals in collaboration with 4,300 companies. Over 2,340,000 visitors have been able to enjoy the exhibition’s sensory experience, observing first-hand the “jewels” of a creative laboratory for materials, design and innovation.

DOM3 – GUARANTEED QUALITY

DOM3 is a well-established group of entrepreneurs and professionals who are united in their mission to preserve and elevate the design, construction and promotion of high-quality housing in Marbella and surrounding areas. As part of their efforts, DOM3 members strive for “information exchange, mutual cooperation and joint action” and work to positively influence development in the luxury housing sector. Goals of the association include the promotion of initiatives and innovation in the sector, maintaining partnerships with high-quality and respected businesses, and promoting the creation of a quality seal to distinguish companies for their corporate values.

According to Mike Gregory, director general at Atlas Group, “As a long-standing member of DOM3, Atlas Group has a shared vision of raising the bar of the high-end residential market. Our commitment to excellence is paramount in our work, and we continue to strive for quality service, integrity and technical know-how.”

In addition to Atlas Group, members of the association include Illusion, Ernesto Palanco Arquitectura, Roman Clavero, Bulthaup, Charly Simon Photo and Juan Salvador Shvartzberg, among others, all striving for excellence within their sector and highly respected within their respective fields. With a new board of directors elected towards the end of last year, led by newly-elected president Juan Mancha, financial director of Atlas Group, the group has the task of continuing to add value to the luxury housing sector. “We want to incorporate more high-level professionals and improve DOM3’s visibility in all areas: with new guests, informative talks, conferences, meetings, awards, etc,” said Juan Mancha.

At a recent event at EL Coto restaurant, the board of directors invited more than 50 industry experts to join the event. The topics presented included

current affairs in the high-quality residential sector and participants were provided with the opportunity to learn about economic forecasts that will continue to position Marbella as a leading destination for international investment.

The location was selected by Juan Mancha specifically, as El Coto restaurant – which is on the Ronda road near the mountainous luxury development of La Zagaleta, and is nestled in the natural landscape – is a clear example of work completed to the highest standards. Atlas Group was appointed to carry out the rehabilitation and refurbishment of El Coto, which also involved several DOM3 members who were contracted for various aspects of the project related to their individual professional fields.

During the event, a presentation from San Telmo Business School detailed their expectation for a strong increase in tourism this year, with the Marbella and wider Costa del Sol area predicted to experience a strong rebound. Also present was José Antonio Mena, mayor of Benahavís, who highlighted the sector represented by DOM3 as an important source of wealth and employment for the entire region. The mayor also noted the importance of fluid and stable collaborations with organisations such as DOM3, with the aim of working for the common good, and maintaining the luxury real estate sector’s high quality and prominence.

PRESENTATION OF INCOME TAX RETURNS IN SPAIN

The “declaración de renta” is the annual income tax return that taxpayers in Spain have to present to regularise their situation for the previous financial year. Personal income tax (IRPF) is levied on all income obtained during a financial year, including for salaried employment (payroll), self-employed income, and other income such as rents, dividends, etc.

It is a direct and progressive tax, with the rate rising as income increases. It is calculated according to different IRPF brackets for earned income and the resulting percentage that is applied to obtain the amount of tax payable to the Spanish treasury (Hacienda).

This year there have been changes to income tax brackets in Andalucía, Madrid, Galicia, Valencia and Murcia.

Income Tax Scale for 2022

– Up to €12,450 – 19%

– €12,450-€20,200 – 24%

– €20,200-€35,200 – 30%

– €35,200-€60,000 – 37%

– €60,000-€300,000 – 45%

– More than €300,000 – 47%

Who Must Pay Income Tax in Spain?

Individuals whose habitual residence is in Spanish territory and those whose habitual residence is abroad in cases established in articles 8, 9 and 10 of Law 35/2006, of 28 November.

People obliged to file personal income tax returns in Spain:

– Residents in Spain who are salaried employees with a single payer must make a declaration if their income is more than €22,000 gross per year. Salaried employees with two or more payers must declare if their income exceeds €14,000 gross per year.

– Self-employed professionals in Spain with total income from work, movable assets or real estate capital, or economic activities or capital gains of more than €1,000 and capital losses of €500 or more.

– Those with total income from movable assets and capital gains subject to retention (withholding) or payment on account exceeding €1,600 per year in Spain.

– Those who receive only imputed real estate income, full income from movable assets not subject to retention that is derived from treasury bills and subsidies for the acquisition of subsidised or “VPT” housing, and other capital gains derived from public aid that exceeds €1,000 in Spain.

The deadline period for presenting income taxes this year officially began on 11 April and ends on 30 June.
