The Optimism Project paper focuses on Britain but it could just as easily refer to Spain – or any modern-day country for that matter. And it is especially relevant to the Costa del Sol home décor and design market as we put the crisis well behind us and this sector helps boost a resurgent Spanish economy.

Enabled by cross-party think tank Demos’s partnership with strategic insight company Opinium, the paper identifies sources of division and discontent, sets out why and to what end the Optimism Project was launched, outlines the findings of Opinium’s research, identifying where optimism is still strong and what is driving it, and finally sets out Demos’s conclusions on how to build “a successful, unifying programme for national renewal that is rooted in the authentic experience of our citizens”.

We won’t dwell on the negatives but instead, as we enjoy the pleasures of another wonderful late autumn and early winter in southern Spain, highlight the positives – and how they can inspire us wherever we might be living or holidaying.

Again, they specifically refer to Britain but can be easily transposed to Spain: free healthcare and education system, venerable heritage, beautiful green spaces, history and diversity, inexpensive costs of living, good transport links and friendly people.

While in this positive frame of mood, meanwhile, our attention also turned to Iceland, where we gained some rare insight into a country that normally slips quietly under the global radar but which has enlightened us with a new life philosophy following Denmark’s “hygge” and Sweden’s “lagom” (both previously referred to here).

It’s not an official slogan, but certainly an informal motto that defines the Icelandic psyche: “þetta reddast”, essentially meaning that everything will work out okay in the end. According to Katie Hammel, in a travel feature for the BBC, it sums up the way Icelanders seem to approach life: with a laidback, easy-going attitude and a great sense of humour.

Hammel quoted tour operator Auður Ösp as noting, “We couldn’t live in this environment without a certain level of conviction that things will work out somehow, hard as they seem in the moment. Þedda redast represents a certain optimism that Icelanders have and this carefree attitude that borders on recklessness. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but we don’t let that stop us from trying… Who would have believed, for example, that a team from a nation of 350,000 people could make it to the 2018 World Cup in Russia? We did – that’s who.”

So, on these upbeat notes, we wish all readers, clients and associates a fulfilling conclusion to the year – and we’ll be back in 2019 with an even more robustly sanguine attitude and ready to continue showcasing southern Spain’s finest products, services and trends in home décor.

HÁBITAT IN VALENCIA INTERNATIONAL PLATFORM FOR “MADE IN SPAIN” DESIGN

Valencia regional president Ximo Puig highlighted the importance of design during an official visit to this year’s Hábitat fair. Inaugurating the ENAD Congress (organised by Encuentro Nacional de Asociaciones de Diseño), Puig said the “strength of creativity inspired by design” provided a response to homogenisation generated by globalisation. In addition to the Congress, other events held in conjunction with the annual furniture and lighting fair included “nude”, a conference for talented young designers, and a tribute to Valencian designer Pedro Miralles, considered an iconic figure of the 1980s “Movida” (“Movement”).

According to the organisers, the 2018 edition of Hábitat was visited by 26,140 professionals over the four days, 13 per cent more than the total the previous year. The number of Spanish buyers increased by 12 per cent, and international ones double that figure, mostly from Russia (21 per cent), Portugal (18), France (16), Italy (eight) and United Kingdom ( five) - with a total of 56 markets represented. www.feriahabitatvalencia.com

REVOLUTIONARY DESIGN AND DINING CONCEPT IN MARBELLA

With environmental issues being on most people’s conscience these days, BREATHE™ are certainly setting the bar with their pioneering eco-friendly design concept - putting themselves, as well as Marbella, well and truly on the map. Home & Lifestyle Magazine was invited to meet the interior designer, Marta del Ganso, for this newlyopened mega venue, which had been the talk of the town for many months previous to its opening.

Marta is a young and spritely interior designer from Madrid who has always had a love for Marbella due to sharing many visits here with her family in their holiday home. On meeting Marta, we automatically sensed her unbounding enthusiasm for the project. There is no denying that this enormous venture would have been a daunting task for anyone, and at the tender age of 26 she was impressively confident in her vision and came across genuinely humble and down-to-earth.

As mentioned in many of the articles that have been already published about BREATHE™, the concept is wholeheartedly committed to a natural and eco-friendly experience, which is why the talented and groundbreaking landscape designer Mathieu Lèbre really came into his own with his suspended garden that gloriously hangs over what they have called the “Stage” - the restaurant’s main dining area, pertinently named for its raised platform.

Mathieu’s cutting-edge garden designs can be observed all over the venue, from the vertical gardens at the entrance of the venue, into the restaurant and the sky lounge on the upper level, and through to the idyllic patio area at the rear. Together with the cleverly-designed areas bursting with lush natural greenery, the designers have combined the natural vegetation with tasteful water features, natural stone floors and walls, together with beautiful fireplaces and fire pits to unify all of the Earth’s natural elements.

BREATHE™ wanted to stay true to its roots and chose to work with one of Spain’s most recognised furniture brands, Becara, as they have over 50 years’ experience in the world of decoration, and BREATHE™ could order everything made-to-measure to perfectly fit their exacting brief and be assured of the utmost quality for which Becara is internationally-renowned.

Marta comments, “I wanted different themes for each area but always with a reference back to nature using natural materials and colours wherever possible. The colour scheme for the patio area, for example, is blue and white, and in the sky lounge we have black and white marble tables.

Different colours, textures and finishes instantly give a space warmth and enhance the ambience, and this was most important in the restaurant area where you will see a lot of wood, ceramic tiles and woven wall coverings, and a yellow and blue colour scheme going through the fabrics used in the upholstery.”

Marta took a different approach to the design of the cafetería, which is situated on the ground floor, adopting a bolder and more retro-industrial style using more metallic features such as in the chair legs, the clock above the bar and the table top on the bar itself.

METROPOLITAN LUXURY DESIGN FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART COSTA DEL SOL URBAN PROJECT Interview with Eric Kuster. Palo Alto Marbella Interior Designer.

Palo Alto Marbella is much more than an urbanisation. It has, according to its developers, been created to become a destination in its own right – a master plan for a cutting-edge, contemporary, cosmopolitan community of discerning residents wanting to enjoy the finest lifestyle that southern Spain can offer. It is located in Ojén municipality but just two minutes from the La Cañada commercial centre in neighbouring Marbella. The first phase, “Los Almendros”, is currently under constrution and almost completely sold, and attention is now focused on commencing construction of four new apartment phases, Los Pinsapos, Las Jacarandas, Los Almendros II and Los Eucaliptos.

As to be expected for a project at the state-of-the-art high end of the Costa del Sol property market, meticulous attention has been paid to the overall aesthetic and, in that respect, Round Hill Capital, Villarroel Torrico architects and Horizon Homes asked renowned Dutch interior decorator and furniture designer Eric Kuster to contribute his creative vision.

Eric spoke exclusively to Home & Lifestyle Magazine during an open day at the Eric Kuster show flat.

You effectively balance “classic” and contemporary” in your designs but how would you define your overall design philosophy?

When we start with a new project we always start with the ingredients. We first look at the location, at the client and their situation, whether they are a single person, a family, older people, and then we look at the architecture, because those are the ingredients we cannot change. That’s what we call the measuring, almost like a dress. Then we aim to keep everything in balance, as part of our “Metropolitan Luxury” style. It is a very international style, like the look and feel of a hotel: everything is sort of arranged, everything is taken care of, a pleasant smell, nice towels... it’s like the mini-luxe details that make people happy.

We gained a lot of inspiration for this style from hotels. For every interior it’s very important to have the right balance - otherwise it will go wrong. When I talk about balance I mean old with new, shiny with matte, nature with glamour. It all has to be in the right balance and dimensions because if there’s too much glamour, or too much nature, or it’s too old or too new, it’s not exciting any more. We always tell our clients we want to create sexy interiors. Sexiness, for example, is satin on a linen sofa. If a shiny cushion was on a shiny sofa it would be too much, but now it’s the right balance. So that’s more or less how we approach it.

So you draw to a great extent on classic styles from the past?

Yes, I very much like traditional shapes. For instance, in our furniture collection we have traditional models such as a Chesterfield sofa but then we exaggerate the size; or we have classic wing chairs that used to be in Scottish castles, and we blow them up size-wise and then we use a very modern fabric on this traditional model. I like timeless designs, products that can stand the test of time. So for the Chesterfield sofa, which has been around for 300 years, we give it a new life, we re-invent it, we re-introduce it, and then we put modern textile on it, and you have a totally new piece.

Do you use sustainable materials?

We don’t actually have a green label. For me the green label is very commercial, but we are committed to sustainability. We give life-long guarantees for the wooden frames on our furniture, and I think that’s the best way to “green-produce” furniture that you don’t have to throw away after five or six years, even after 10 years. If the fabric is damaged or dirty you can reupholster it but the frame of the sofa will actually last for 20 years, or 30, or maybe even longer.

What trends can we expect to see over the next couple of years?

You usually see that, when there is a buoyant economy, interiors become very minimalistic; and during bad economic times they are glamorous. There is always this contrast. We had a crisis over the past eight or 10 years, and there was a lot of glamour when it started – Swarovski stones and chandeliers and opulence. Now the economy’s booming and, of course, there is still luxury, but it’s very toned down.

Why do you think that is?

Again, I think it’s balance. People want to have glamour at home at a time when maybe they are missing it in their business, and now business is booming – not everywhere, but in general business is good – people don’t want to show off so much. I don’t believe very strongly in trends because I think they are short term and we try to work more in the longer term. However, we do believe in personalisation, finding unique pieces: a nice antique painting from your grandfather, for example, and mixing it with a vintage chair and a new sofa. That’s an interior that is especially made for you and also tells your own story.

Is there such a concept as “Mediterranean style” in interior decoration?

Yes, the Mediterranean style varies – you have Greek, Spanish, Portuguese and Moorish, which I like also, northern African style. It’s more colourful, totally different from the northern European style where we come from. We are very grey. The German, Scandinavian, Dutch and English style is similar: we use a lot of non-colours, grey tones, because we have a very grey climate. Here you can use a lot more lighter colours and different materials because of the climate.

And a distinctive Dutch influence?

Dutch design has almost become like a brand name around the world because there are many famous interior designers, architects and product developers from Holland. So it helps for us to mention we’re from Holland, that we are Dutch, and we are proud of that. But we essentially promote our European, not Dutch, roots. We always mention we are European, because I also design my own furniture and textiles.

Everything that you see here, or almost everything, is designed by our team and produced in the EU, so we’re proud of producing in Holland and Italy and Portugal. We like to remain a European brand. I like tradition. The reason I live in London now is because the English stay so loyal to their traditions.

Also the Spanish, in a different way. I think people should be proud of their roots and their traditions. Sometimes if you are in London you see the same shops as in Istanbul, as everywhere, and I think it’s a pity.

In addition to “sexiness”… how do you add your signature touch of “joie de vivre” to an interior design project?

Again, I think it’s the balance because sometimes you want to make a little joke, a piece that is not completely perfect. Otherwise it can become boring if an interior is too perfect. Perfect is boring because then you can’t think about how to improve it. If you reach a perfect level you may as well stop tomorrow because if you cannot improve any more it’s over.

So you incorporate deliberate flaws?

Yes, we sometimes do it on purpose. Those pieces people will always remember.

You have been described as a “holistic lifestyle guru”. What does that mean?

I’m not sure where that came from, but I do truly believe in energies and positive vibes and negative vibes. I believe in feng shui, as an eastern way of approaching interior decoration and even architecture. If you have a mountain behind your home and a sea view in front for example, you feel protected as a person. It’s your subconsciousness, you feel relaxed. In houses you have to have certain rules: the position of the sofa, where you feel safe, always sleeping with your face towards the door…

Feng shui is about energy, letting the energy circulate through your house.

I wasn’t aware of this until I bought my own showroom in Holland, 10 or 12 years ago, and one of my clients said this was the perfect house because we had a round staircase in the middle. They said that meant all the energy in the house would never cease or become stuck - it would always flow - so the house would bring us luck. And it did actually. I’m not sure if it’s about the round staircase or me and my team’s work but at least we are quite successful.

I think the staircase helps (laughs).

How did you become involved with the Palo Alto project in Marbella?

Arianne (Gerritse - Eric’s associate on various projects) and her husband are friends with the developer, Matías Villarroel, and his wife. I worked on a project with Hugo Torrico, the main architect on the Palo Alto project, many years ago, so when Arianne moved to Marbella I also became close to Matías and his wife, and the Palo Alto project - Matías spoke about it very enthusiastically. I also met Hugo again, and they told me they needed someone to do the interior design.

What were the main features that attracted you to Palo Alto?

If you get a little bit older, like me, you start to appreciate quality more - in people, in time. If you build something, you should think about it long enough to do it the right way immediately. Sometimes we have to break down new buildings because they’ve been developed totally wrong. The wrong layouts, the wrong materials, poor finishes… Sometimes, because of the pace at which people are building, they don’t really think about the layout of a building or how people really live. That is something that we think about every day, and my clients think about every day. How do I want to live in a house? Palo Alto has the right finishes, beautiful materials, hardware and bathrooms, but also a good layout so we can actually work with this project, We are very proud to work with Palo Alto - they have created the whole master plan. If I were to buy an apartment in Marbella, I would live in a place like Palo Alto because, again, it’s like a hotel. You have the concierge service, you have the spa, the restaurant, a members’ club. It’s like a community, so you’re being taken care of. People should have the hassle taken out of buying a property in a foreign country, and just be able to enjoy the process. The construction is already taken care of here at Palo Alto, and they can meet us and make the choices for their furniture and colours. We give every new buyer a free HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

consultation, we have a lot of options with the layouts and I bring my own furniture - we are very flexible. Of course, people are also free to work with different interior designers, because you cannot work with someone who has a completely different style. Palo Alto will even arrange the kitchen appliances, and we can decorate the beds and arrange all the towels. It’s completely turnkey, and that’s what we normally do with our other clients. It’s a concept that is relatively new for Spain. People can enter their new house and all they have to do is turn the key, and bring in their suitcase.

Do people also like to bring their own home touches?

Many people say, “Yeah, but I have my own sofa and I have this little cabinetry from my grandmother, and I want to integrate it”, and we always say yes. But then, when we do the first presentation, and it’s not that we don’t want to use it, they say, “Wow, that’s so beautiful, forget about this. I don’t need this old sofa any more.” That’s how it goes often.

The climate here must have a lot to do with people’s choices as well…

Yes, for instance, velvet is not a nice material to work with because it’s just too heavy. You have to use linens, and cottons and satins, more for the southern European climate, so that’s something we take into consideration. Every house should be practical to live in. We make beautiful interiors but I think the real comfort is when you can live in a house without being worried if there’s a drop on your carpet. It should also be practical. We have loose covers on sofas that you can take to the dry-cleaners. We use a lot of non-stainable and durable materials, and dirt-protection finishes. The hardware, such as the floors and kitchens, also has to be practical because otherwise it can become irritating.

Is marble still in common use for floors in new Spanish homes?

I love marble. I cannot get used to ceramics. In Spain they use a lot of ceramics now. You have a lot of production here, some huge brands, and they’re beautiful products. But we are big fans of real marble, at least on the floor, because real marble is from nature, and ceramic gives the house a totally different feeling. It’s something personal. If clients want ceramic, there are beautiful ceramic floors as well, but I’m happy that Palo Alto also decided to work with beautiful marble floors, stone floors that give the houses a lot of extra value I believe.

Do you have any other projects planned in southern Spain?

When I started my company 20 years ago, we did many units at Las Dunas in Estepona, a lot of villas in El Madroñal, and later at La Zagaleta. A lot of Dutch people were buying properties at the time, so we always had projects here. We know the area very well, so we know the right partner companies.

If not, we bring them in from Holland. We use some local companies, some Dutch, depending on the project. But of course this is a very unique project, Palo Alto, and we are very proud that our name is connected with the project.

It is something we haven’t done before and we will not do with anybody else, at least until this project ends. We work on an exclusive basis. I believe it’s the best development, and that’s why we wanted to work with Palo Alto.

AN ICONIC ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHER FOCUSED ON ARCHITECTURE

A French photographer originally from Paris, Matthieu Venot started his career as a sound engineer. He says he found that to be unfulfilling so he decided to enter the world of abstract photography – feeling “a need to be involved in work that stirs the emotions”.

Matthieu moved to Brest in Brittany and began taking photos of a town he was, at the time, unfamiliar with but which he wanted to show through his eyes, taking photos of buildings in different ways – sometimes triangular, sometimes flat or just at an angle.

“I am drawn to colour,” he explains. “The light brings out the colours spectacularly so I never like to take photos in the morning or evening when the light isn’t perfectly bright. I love it when the colours are flat and very graphic, sim-

ple and streamlined. I have developed my style over time and I now try to fit more into the frame.” In spite of having established himself as an iconic photographer who clearly focuses on architectural buildings, Matthieu does not like to refer to himself as an architectural photographer – rather an abstract photographer whose subject matter happens to be buildings. He endeavours to “celebrate urban surroundings by capturing a section of a building that offers artistic and geometric beauty in its composition and colour”.

How can you tell if someone has an addiction?

Matthew Idle: It’s all about behaviour changes and how someone acts. You can watch the changes in personality and at times physical appearance... lots of denial around being addicted and defending their behaviours as normal or everyone else’s thoughts. I always say they are so sick they don’t even know they are sick. People with addictions and behavioural conditions are no different to anyone else. The only difference is that they have come to believe that they can’t overcome their problems or issues, and this can lead them to become dependent upon substances that can cause depression and/or lead to severe anxiety issues.

How do you deal with this dependency?

The staff help with the physical aspect of a person’s addiction or problem.

They will support you with what is really at the heart of taking control of your life again and help you work towards reversing the “sense of defeat”. They will assist you on your journey, helping you to reclaim the confidence and belief that “you can face your demons and overcome them”.

Because these companies compete on price with each other they look at how many units fit into a container rather then if a chair is comfortable or long-lasting.

At the other end you find the second type of outdoor furniture offered on the Costa del Sol by brands such as Kettal, Manutti, Vondom, Ethimo, Point, Expormim, Gloster and Dedon, and distributed by interior designers and home styling agencies. Most interior designers offer the same brands and the choices are therefore limited.

MINIMALIST GARDENS Small maybe… but never dull

Small gardens have a lot more potential than you realise.

Whether dealing with a long narrow space, a cramped back garden that lacks privacy, a run-down garden being given a facelift or a terrace which has nothing going for it, the possibilities are endless. So don’t write off your outdoor area just yet - with the right design, it could be an incredible garden.

The best small garden designs, as I have said before, are simple but elegant; no complicated arrangement and trying to mix different garden styles together Trying too hard also will not work. Step back, have a good look at your space and think it through.

Designing a garden in a small space is challenging - I love doing them - and yet they have many advantages compared to a larger one. Since the area is small, less effort is needed to maintain the area. Also, you can concentrate on very detailed accents and accessories. Never forget to take clippings form healthy plants and re-plant them.

One more important thing is to use vertical spaces efficiently, and opt for plants that grow upwards. Another aspect while planning a small garden is the inclusion of a private space. You need to decide whether you need tables and chairs where you can enjoy your morning tea or evening wine. If you have a terrace, especially think how about the sun moves; shade for the midday sun is important, or plants which can withstand the powerful heat.

Small garden plans should include a proper selection of flowers and herbs for cooking. As per the availability of space and sunshine, you can select from among the large variety of flowers that grow in light shade, deep shade, full sun and partial sun. If you do not want to be too bothered, find plants which are not fussy and do not need a lot of looking after. Always put in plants which attract bees, as they are vital for us.

As for other criteria… Create a list of essential things you want to apply

in the garden. Good planning of plants placement and other elements is very important. Optimising curves and circles visually expands the available space. Remember the importance of negative space; even a tiny courtyard or lawn can provide balance to a small garden. Include built-in seating in a corner to keep your garden from feeling crowded. Use a living wall to add lushness where ground space is limited. Step back and look at your yard with fresh eyes, then simplify and tidy.

Even if your outdoor space seems overwhelming, pick just one thing that you most want to change.

Think big. Ample pathways and gathering spaces are inviting, and large features are engaging in any size space. You can maximise the liveability of a small yard by taking advantage of changes in terrain to segment the space into different living areas. Dividing a garden, even when small, often has the paradoxical effect of making it seem larger.

In small gardens where space is too limited for major focal points, compose a series of mini views within the garden itself, offering interest in every direction while using plants to provide a framework.

If you are planning to entertain groups, keep furniture and plantings along the perimeter of the garden to allow for mingling in the centre of the space.

When selecting plants for a relatively small space, don’t go colour crazy.

Stick with a more monochromatic scheme of cooler colours (such as blues, violets, yellows and silvery greens) -otherwise you might end up with a garden that feels close and confined, which is what I have noted in previous articles. Finally, don’t forget lighting to extend the use of your yard well into the night.

If you do all this, you will enjoy your small garden just as much as those with a large one do. Have fun!

The healthy eating phenomenon is taking the world by storm, with raw food, gluten-free, unrefined, organic and free-range now standard words used in our daily lives. And the superfood revolution - including quinoa, goji berries, Matcha, chia seeds and the like - has also become part of our gastronomic vocabulary.

Many sceptics say that all these new ways of consuming our food are just dietary fads that clear the conscience but are actually overpriced, tasteless and unsatisfying. Nevertheless, best friends and owners of Healthy Kitchen, Natalia Belaiche and Katerina Bashur, are hellbent on overturning this theory.

(Natalia is founder of the Nutrition School of Health in Marbella specialising in detox and weight-loss programs that address gut issues and immunity problems; and Katerina is an Integrative Nutritional Institute graduate specialising in hormonal health, gut healing programs and general wellbeing.)

Nearing the end of the summer this year, Natalia and Katerina opened Healthy Kitchen, which is situated in Glow Wellness & Fitness in the Playas del Duque building in Puerto Banús. Their concept is to offer creative gastronomy that not only looks delicious but is also full of flavour and nourishes you so that you are ready to take on the challenges of the day.

Their dishes are rich in vitamins and minerals that are, on the whole, glutenfree and made from unrefined sugars. Their meat and fish come from freerange and organic-certified farms, and their fruit, vegetables and grains are delivered daily from local and organic suppliers. They never deep-fry or microwave and they use pure oils that are low in saturated fat such as coldpressed extra virgin olive oils, for example.

Natalia likes to refer to Healthy Kitchen as a delicatessen, as you order from a wide choice of hot and cold dishes at their bar and then you take your table while they meticulously prepare your food and then bring it over to you. They offer breakfast and lunch plus snacks, smoothies and organically freshlysqueezed juices throughout the day.

Natalia comments, “For breakfast, our homemade granola has no sugar or gluten, and our eggs Benedict is very popular and is made from organic free-range eggs with Hollandaise sauce made from ghee butter. We serve Belgian waffles that are gluten-free, fresh bread free from artificial ingredients and preserva-

tives, and our Açaí bowl seems to have become quite a hit with our clients.” For lunch there is a salad bar that changes daily, offering a range of flavours originating from Thailand, India and the Mediterranean. If you fancy a quick coffee, you could try one of their Matcha lattes or their “golden drink” (a turmeric latte).

Healthy Kitchen can best be described as a veritable oasis of tranquillity.

There are two outdoor terraced areas at the front of the venue which are surrounded by tropical vegetation and covered by retracting roofs to protect you from the sun or rain. Inside, there is a wonderful dining area that is flooded with natural sunlight together with greenery and oversized wicker lampshades hanging gloriously above. There are workstations available with a very fast Wi-Fi connection, and in one of the outdoor terrace areas they hold healthy eating workshops every Thursday (details on their webpage or Instagram page). The workshops teach you how to combine your food, control cravings and hormonal system and, basically, understand your body.

At Healthy Kitchen you can take away your food in recycled packaging and, if you want Healthy Kitchen to come to your home or office, there is a delivery service available between Cancelada and Elviria. If you want to hold an event at home, they can offer catering but, if you would prefer to hold an event at Healthy Kitchen, they would be happy to accommodate your group and even offer a cooking workshop for a bit of educational fun to learn about new ingredients and how to prepare them for a nutritious and tasty meal. If you just want to buy healthy ingredients such as chia seeds, goji berries, etc., go to their Bio Shop and everything you can imagine is available there.

Many people might jump to the conclusion that all of these quality ingredients and preparation come with a price tag, but this is not the case at all. Coffees start from €2.50, salad bowls start at just €6.90 and breakfasts hover around the €7 mark, so good-quality healthy food does not need to break the bank.

sherry... Spain’s National Wine

Although never officially recognised as such, sherry must be considered Spain’s national wine. It was the first to be exported, and the first to be declared a protected product with its own title of origin. Even before claret was known outside France, sherry had a flourishing export market and was drunk in England before Shakespeare’s time. Foreign merchants started the trade, giving many bodegas their original Anglo-Saxon names (e.g. Williams, Humbert, Domecq, Garvey, Croft, Sandeman, Osborne, Harvey, Byass). Unless it comes from the enchanted triangle formed by the towns of Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, this remarkable wine cannot be referred to as sherry.

Unlike the young Rueda or Albariño white wines that are riding high currently, sherry’s popularity has been declining over recent times, but there are several good reasons why you should consider becoming an aficionado.

Historically the most under-priced wine in the world, a good dry sherry will today cost around six euros, and you are buying something that has taken many years to produce. There is hardly a top-line sherry bodega that is not now part of a larger national group or a multinational. Of the registered bodegas, only Caballero, Osborne and Barbadillo, together with a handful of the smaller ones, remain family-owned. These three big independents were faster on their feet and, instead of waiting to be taken over, acquired wineries in other Spanish regions to strengthen their core business. A case of eat or be eaten.

Young people do not want to know about sherry, whether it be dry fino, salty manzanilla or lip-smacking oloroso. The trade has tried reinventing sherry in various ways but without success. If it were not for the ferias of Andalu-

cía, sherry sales would be in even more trouble. The traditional feria drink of Jerez, fino, was replaced by Sanlúcar manzanilla two decades ago, possibly because it was slightly less alcoholic, although both are now the same grade.

Barbadillo sold half a million bottles of its Solear manzanilla at last year’s Sevilla feria, one-third of the total annual consumption and seven per cent of the annual production of all manzanillas – and that’s just one feria, though admittedly the biggest.

After the grape pressing the fermented must or grape juice decides for itself what it is going to become: Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso or Palo Cortado - a unique characteristic of sherry. Once it has made up its mind it is introduced into the multi-tier solera ageing system, where it will take years to travel (manually, not by gravitation) from the top row of wooden barrels that make up the first stage to the floor-level, ready-for-bottling level. During this period it will have absorbed the characteristics of the solera, meaning it will taste the same as the original wine produced many years previously already in the barrels. Providing only limited amounts are drawn off for bottling, the quality of the solera will remain constant. There is no other wine in the world that is capable of being blended with older wines in order to take on their characteristics. The magic of sherry…

The golden age of sherry was probably the last half of the 20th century, when demand outstripped supply, and if you belonged to a sherry family you did not have to work. There were around 800 Domecq family members in Jerez, for example, of which 180 were employed by the bodega. The rest lived off the dividends that were declared each year. Few people in Europe enjoyed as good a life as the so-called sherry barons, and the vast sums they invested in horses (a Jerez must), fighting bulls, country estates, luxury motor cars and travel has never been calculated.

At that time nearly all sherry bodegas were family businesses, Almost without exception foreigners had founded the important firms such as Domecq, Garvey, Williams & Humbert, Wisdom & Warter, Osborne and Mackenzie. Family ties are still strong, though, in the smaller wineries of Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Maybe we can expect a rebirth. Finally it has been acknowledged that sherry was sold too cheap in an effort to satisfy northern European demand for a low-cost alcoholic drink. It is illogical that you can buy a bottle of wine that has needed, ultimately, many decades to bring it to maturity, for a few euros, when even a mediocre young red wine from any Spanish region will cost more. The owners of the remaining bodegas have very sensibly realised that they were underselling their product, so are currently rummaging around in the cobweb-steeped cellars to find butts of wine that have been there for centuries. These old wines are not cheap but, even if they cost 30 euros, how can any wine aficionado deny that this is price worth paying for a significant chunk of the history of the oldest wine-producing region in Spain?

The Exercise Placebo Effect

Is there such a thing as a placebo effect where exercise is concerned? We are probably all familiar with the concept of a placebo effect when related to medicines; it is the reason medical trials have to be so stringent and why people are often randomly assigned to a “treatment” group or “sham” group.

Medicines have to be shown to be more effective than placebos before we can recommend them in health care.

Even in physiotherapy trials we often have a “placebo” arm, where the participant in the trial will meet with a physio for the same amount of time as participants in the active arm, but only those in the treatment group will be offered the physiotherapy session that we hope makes the difference.

However, we are just now beginning to understand how our mind-set, or our beliefs about the exercise we undertake, seem to have an important role in the effectiveness of that exercise. Sort of like a “placebo effect” for exercise.

Allia Crum and Ellen Langer, from Harvard University, investigated whether a person´s perception of the activity they undertake impacts on the health outcomes achieved.

Eighty-four female room cleaners were assigned two different research options. Staff in four of the hotels were offered education regarding the benefit of the physical activity they undertook as part of their job. They were provided with written information specific to their daily work: for instance, vacuuming for 15 minutes burns 50 calories and cleaning bathrooms for 15 minutes burns 60 calories. Those in the intervention group were informed that their

work was clearly helping them to achieve and even exceed recommended weekly exercise guidelines and would expend on average 200 extra calories a day. In another three hotels staff were given general information about exercise but not related specifically to their own work.

Before and four weeks after the intervention measures such as waist-hip ratio, blood pressure, weight and body fat were recorded. After four weeks neither group reported any change in their actual weekly physical activities and hotel managers said there was no increase in the daily work performed. However, those in the informed group considered themselves up to 60 per cent more active than previously whereas those in the control group perceived no change. After only four weeks of knowing that their work was good exercise, the subjects in the informed group lost an average of two pounds (0.9 kilograms), lowered their systolic BP by 10 points, and showed significantly lower body-fat percentage and BMI. There was no change in the control group.

Mind-set is important to all aspects of life and, while we still don´t fully understand the placebo effect, we know it’s real. So next time you take your dog for his daily 30-minute walk remind yourself that this will have real cardiovascular and physiological benefits, and help your brain maximise these physical effects by harnessing that exercise placebo effect.

USING NEW TECHNOLOGY TO GET A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP A whole new approach to getting a good night’s sleep is now just a click away. A new study from the University of Oxford and Northwestern Medicine has found treating insomnia with digital programs can improve symptoms. In a year-long study involving 1,711 people, researchers found online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) improved not only insomnia symptoms but also functional health, psychological well-being and sleep-related quality of life.

A major limitation of insomnia treatments is the lack of providers to deliver CBT, but this study used an online platform that made it easily accessible to users. It also automated and tailored the treatment based on the user’s sleep patterns. Study co-author Jason Ong said there is a four-to-six month wait for an insomnia patient to get an appointment in his sleep clinic. “We can reach many more patients with insomnia by using a digitally based program,” said Ong, associate professor of neurology in sleep medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago (Illinois).

Insomnia has been identified as a risk factor for the development of mental health disorders, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. “Sleep ranks with air, water and food as one of the essentials of life, yet 10 to 12 per cent of the population doesn’t get enough of it due to insomnia,” said lead study author Colin Espie, Oxford University professor of sleep medicine and chief medical officer of Big Health, a provider of automated and personalised behavioural medicine programs for mental health.

He said these study findings, which were published in JAMA Psychiatry, suggest that digital medicine could be a powerful way to help millions of people not just sleep better but achieve better mental and physical well-being as a result.

Though insomnia has traditionally been treated with pharmaceuticals, new guidelines published in 2016 by the American College of Physicians recommend that CBT be used first-line, ahead of sleeping pills. Study participants received treatment using the Sleepio program and an associated iOS app.

Delivery was structured into six sessions lasting an average of 20 minutes each, with participants having access to the intervention for up to 12 weeks.

Researchers assessed the study participants online at zero weeks (baseline), four weeks (mid-treatment), eight weeks (post-treatment) and 24 weeks ( fol-

low-up). Program content was based on CBT manuals and included behavioural, cognitive and educational components.

In the digital CBT (dCBT) group, 689 participants (80.8 per cent) logged on for at least one session, 491 participants (57.6 per cent) completed at least four sessions, and 413 participants (48.4 per cent) completed all six sessions.

At each follow-up visit, dCBT was associated with significant improvement in global health and mental wellbeing.

RETHINKING STATINS IN SOME OLDER ADULTS A new Spanish study is questioning whether some older adults should be taking a statin medication for their cholesterol levels. The study does not support widespread use of statins in healthy older people to prevent heart disease. Any protective effect was limited to those with type 2 diabetes aged between 75 and 84.

In a newly published study researchers found statins are not associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease or death in healthy people age 75 or older. The results of the study do not support the widespread use of statins in adults 75 and older, but they do support treatment in selected people, such as those aged 75-84 years with type 2 diabetes, said Spanish researchers.

Using data from the Catalan primary care system database (SIDIAP), they identified 46,864 people aged 75 years or more with no history of cardiovascular disease between 2006 and 2015. Participants were grouped into those with and without type 2 diabetes and as statin non-users or new users (anyone starting statins for the first time during the study enrolment period). Primary care and hospital records were then used to track cases of CVD (including coronary heart disease, angina, heart attack and stroke) and death from any cause (all-cause mortality) over an average of 5.6 years.

In participants without diabetes, statin treatment was not associated with a reduction in CVD or all-cause mortality in both old and very old age groups, even though the risk of CVD in both groups was higher than the risk thresholds proposed for statin use in guidelines. However, in participants with diabetes statins were associated with significantly reduced levels of CVD (24 per cent) and allcause mortality (16 per cent) in those aged 75-84 years. The study showed that this protective effect declined after age 85 and disappeared by age 90.

When designing the mixed-use Shoreditch Hotel building in East London, the architects’ objective was to explore an “alternative contemporary language” as a formal response to the site conditions.

The intersection of Old Street and Great Eastern Street is an iconic landmark in the area, with the ancient Roman street widening on the western side after crossing what is popularly known as the “Silicon Roundabout”, the intersection of City Road, and opening the doors of Shoreditch at Haggerston.

According to the AQSO architects studio, “This junction is not only significant from the morphology of the urban fabric but also for becoming a regeneration catalyst in this old industrial area influenced by the City of London that has experienced an important creative and artistic boom.”

The building includes a hotel, cinema and retail area. “Against the monolithic presence of a totem that divides the paths in two, the building becomes a flexible element that blends with the perspective of the resulting streets while respecting the pedestrian flow of the public area.”

The building prow was devised to enhance the angle of the junction and respond to the urban views, while stepping back at ground level to emphasise the cycling and pedestrian flow that crosses perpendicularly. “The overlay of these two urban circulations shapes and defines the building form, creating an iconic element, distinctive but not monumental, that is subtle when seen from the adjacent streets.

“The twisted façades of the building contrast with a regular arrangement of openings, creating a language that translates into the interior. An internal courtyard creates a discreet and enigmatic breach that becomes a secondary access point, bringing light into the enclosure and widening at the bottom to host the drop-off area.”

The hotel rooms themselves are located around an internal atrium that concentrates the vertical circulation of the building, while the cinema and retail area occupy the rear of the courtyard, next to the party wall.

The structural system responds to the geometry of the twisted facade, comprising ruled surfaces along arches and straight lines; while the parametric design of the shell is compensated with a rational layout, allowing a consistent distribution of rooms and openings. www.aqso.net HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Inspired by legendary Ferrari Sports racers of the past, the Monza SP1 and SP2 are the first models unveiled in a new limited-edition special series called “Icone”. They reference the most evocative Ferraris of the 1950s and feature the most advanced sports car technology available today.

Aimed at dedicated clients and collectors, the Monza SP1 and SP2 draw inspiration from the iconic Ferrari racing barchettas of the past, including the 1948 166 MM, which originally inspired the name “barchetta”, and the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. These uncompromising models were designed with the sole aim of winning, and they helped build the Ferrari legend in the 1950s by delivering numerous victories in the World Sports Car Championship.

According to Ferrari, the Monza SP1 was “designed as an uncompromising single-seat road car that offers a truly unique experience behind the wheel”.

The second configuration, the Monza SP2, on the other hand, is “a two-seater enabling the passenger to share the same driving sensations... thanks to the elimination of the tonneau cover and the addition of a second protective screen and a second roll-bar”.

In addition to an exceptional design, the Monza SP1 and SP2 incorporate the best weight-to-power ratio of any barchetta, thanks to the extensive use of carbon-fibre in construction, as well as distinctive details such as head-and taillights, wheels and interior – to enhance the cars’ exclusivity. They are equipped with the most powerful engine Maranello has ever built: a 810 cv V12, they can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and zero to 200 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

The two cars’ architecture is based on a monolithic form with an aerodynamic wing profile “where the complete absence of a roof and windscreen gave the designers the freedom to create unique proportions that would not have been possible on a traditional spider”.

The result, says Ferrari, “is the feeling of blistering speed normally only experienced by Formula 1 drivers, which derives from the concept of a cockpit carved from the car’s very volume that wraps around the driver.”

The Ferrari Design Centre’s aim was to create a pure design, “as though born of a single pencil stroke, to convey an ideal of timeless elegance, minimalist form and refined detail. Visually complex solutions, such as those seen on recent racing cars, have been avoided, giving way to a more understated formal design language. Never has a model expressed such a narrative power, highlighting its appeal as a driver’s car where the link between man and automobile becomes symbiotic.”

The centre also opted for a “radical choice” in the design of the cars’ compact doors, which open upwards, and placed equal importance on the all-carbonfibre one-piece bonnet-wing assembly, which is hinged at the front to showcase the imposing V12 engine once open.

In tune with their racing model pedigree, the Monza SP1 and SP2’s bodyshells are made entirely from lightweight carbon-fibre. “The entire interior is trimmed in the same material with a natural finish to enhance the sporty impact of the design. Weight reduction and the ‘barchetta’ configuration guarantee unique vehicle dynamics: perfectly balanced with no roll whatsoever for pure, uncompromising sports-car handling.”

One of the other major challenges in designing these authentic “en plein air” sports cars was managing the aerodynamic flows inside the cockpit in the absence of a windscreen. The designers found the solution in an innovative patented “Virtual Wind Shield”, which has been incorporated into the fairing ahead of the instrument panel and the steering wheel. The shield deviates part of the air flow to maintain driving comfort.

To complement the driving experience exclusively for Monza SP1 and SP2 owners, Ferrari, in collaboration with leading luxury brands Loro Piana and Berluti, has created “elegant gentlemen-driver-inspired apparel and accessories”. The driver’s selection includes racing overalls, jersey, helmet, gloves, scarf and driving shoes, featuring a various technical solutions to guarantee a comfortable fit and ensure freedom of movement while driving.

Museo Picasso Málaga EXPLORING THE SYNTHESIS OF SPANISH ART

A new exhibition in Málaga provides a journey of discovery from Iberian art through Classical Antiquity and Baroque before concluding with the modern art of Pablo Picasso’s own contemporaries. Inaugurated in October, “Picasso’s South: Andalucian References” is scheduled to continue at Museo Picasso Málaga until 3 February as part of its 15th anniversary celebrations.

The show takes a look at the history of Spanish art by displaying works by Málaga-born Picasso – the protagonist of an essential chapter in modern art – alongside valuable archaeological artefacts and paintings by great masters including Zurbarán, Velázquez, Murillo, Goya, María Blanchard and Juan Gris.

“Picasso’s South” is described by the organisers as exploring the intellectual journey that Picasso made from south to north, using the symbolic heritage of

his homeland to return to his point of departure. “It focuses on the profound imprint that Mediterranean culture left upon Picasso’s work and sets up a dialogue between a selection of works from his various creative periods and examples of Spain’s rich historic and artistic heritage, of which he was a great connoisseur.

“One of the aims is to illustrate how the visual nature of his work bears features and qualities such as austerity and loss of faith that are akin to those in Spain’s own collective memory. These features are both tangible in the nation’s artistic heritage and present in the emotional expression of a people who have, artistically, been constructing a cultural identity over many centuries. In the specific case of Andalucía, it is clearly that of a melting pot of three different cultures.”

PICASSO AND THE MASTERS According to exhibition curator José Lebrero Stals, Picasso was “additive, cyclical and loyal to the memory of an iconography that he appropriated by incorporating it into the very act of demonstrating his own alterity. He turned art history into his own personal ‘other story’. The exhibition constructs a game of double correspondence between an outstanding selection of works produced by Picasso over a period spanning seven decades, and the two-and-ahalf-millennia history of Spain’s heritage, looked at in a different way.”

A total of 204 pieces are brought together in the exhibition, with paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic works by Picasso seen alongside a major collection of archaeological artefacts from the Iberian and Phoenician cultures and the Greco-Roman period, as well as paintings, engravings and polychrome sculptures by great masters of Spanish art such as Juan Sánchez Cotán, Juan van der Hamen, Francisco de Zurbarán, Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Alonso Cano, Antonio de Pereda, Bartolomé E. Murillo, Pedro de Camprobín, Juan de Zurbarán, Pedro de Mena, Luis E. Meléndez and Francisco de Goya.

PICASSO AND THE SOUTH Picasso’s influence and contribution to the history of 20th-century western art began in Málaga, where he was born at the end of the 19th century, and it continued during an eight-decade artistic career that ended back on the Mediterranean, on France’s Côte d’Azur.

The organisers note that the exhibition uses several premises to support the idea that Picasso never ceased to be interested in the origins and traditions of painting, “in much the same way as his migrancy bound him emotionally to his homeland, never shedding his loyalty to his cultural ties: Málaga, Andalucía and Spain were all part of his ‘southernness’, and not just in artistic terms.

“The influence of the Mediterranean, the magical gaze, the portrait throughout history, the Classics, the depiction of life and death in the Baroque period, the pietá, archetypes and rituals… These are just some of the arguments for examining subjects that formed part of Picasso’s iconography, such as the bullfight, still-life, vanitas paintings, motherhood and rituals, or his pictorial affinity with the masters of the Spanish Baroque, and which reveal diverse aspects of his strong identification with Spain’s artistic heritage and the novel way in which he interpreted it.”

The “call of the south” is also apparent in Picasso’s poetry: free-flowing, spontaneous texts that he worked on during two decades from 1935. A selection of these poems is on display in the exhibition, which also offers visitors the opportunity of listening to Picasso’s voice, in two interviews that a Spanish journalist recorded for Radio Paris in Vallauris for the artist’s 80th birthday.

ASSIGNMENT OF PRIVATE PURCHASE CONTRACT FOR DWELLINGS UNDER CONSTRUCTION Article supplied by Welex Lawyers & Accountants

Did you buy a property in Spain that is under construction, and are you willing to sell your purchase option to a third party? Are you willing to purchase an already existing option to purchase a property that is under construction in Spain? This issue we set out a full explanation of the tax liabilities that you should be taking into account at the time of the assignment of a private purchase contract for properties under construction in Spain.

First, a quick brushstroke of the taxation that derives from the assignment to a third party by the purchaser of the rights they have of a private purchase of contract of dwelling, normally under construction, taking place with the developer, subrogating the third party in that Spanish contract.

Initially it is necessary to confirm with the developer, and that it is stated in the contract, that, in effect, the private purchase contract has been signed between the purchaser and the developer and that it states the option of transfer.

Suppose the following example: An “X” purchaser has signed a Private Purchase Contract in Andalucía for a property that is currently under construction with a “Y” developer. Once finished, the final price of the Spanish house is 300,000 Euros (IVA/VAT included). The delivery date of the finished future home is estimated in the contract to be about 20 months from the signing of the contract. “X” has made a payment on the account of 40,000 Euros, including for the corresponding IVA/VAT. With the written authorisation of the developer, the purchase agreement allows the transfer of the rights subscribed by “X” to a third party.

Ten months after the signing of the private contract of sale, “X” receives an offer from a third party “Z” for the assignment of the rights of the purchase contract, subrogating “Z” in the position of “X”. Both parties — “X” and “Z” — agree on a price for this assignment: 50,000 Euros, which means that “Z” must pay “X” the amount of 40,000 Euros, which is the amount paid on account under the Private Purchase Contract, and an additional amount of 50,000 Euros, would be the price agreed for the transfer.

According to the different binding resolutions of the Spanish DirectorateGeneral of Taxes, this legal assumption of transfer to third parties of the rights of a private contract for the sale of a property in Spain would be an assumption of a transfer of rights, not of property, and would be subject to the Spanish Transfer Tax in the form of onerous patrimonial transfers. According to the law that regulates this tax, in this case, the taxpayer would be “in the transmissions of goods and rights of all kinds, who acquires…” (Article 8.a RDleg 1/1993, which approves the Property Transfer and Legal Document Tax).

Therefore, it would not be the transfer of property but the rights held by the transferor against the vendor entity, which comes as the result of the conclusion of the private contract of the property.

According to article 17.1 of the law regulating the tax, “In the event of real estate under construction, the tax base will be constituted by the real value of the property at the time of transfer of the credit or right, without it being less than the amount of the consideration paid for the assignment.”

The applicable tax rate will correspond to the property that is transferred, in this case the type corresponding to the transfer of real estate. In Andalucía, the tax rate would be eight per cent in its first tranche (article 11.1.a).

In our example, there are several values that can generate doubts when determining the tax base.

– On the one hand, we have the price paid on account for “X” at the signing of the private contract: 40,000 Euros.

– On the other hand, we find the value that the parties have agreed upon for the assignment: 50,000 Euros.

– Finally, there is the real value that the property would have at present, that is, 10 months after the granting of the Private Purchase Contract. This value can be difficult to quantify by the parties “X” and “Z”, so we could go to the developer who, through his architect, certifies the value of the property based on the volume of the construction executed. The architect certifies this value in the amount of 150,000 Euros.

Therefore, the taxable base would be formed by the real value that the asset has at the time of the assignment per the amount of construction completed (150,000 Euros), unless the amount of consideration paid for the assignment is greater (50,000 Euros), in which case this would be the tax base. That is, the tax base is placed on the higher of the following variables: the value of the construction at the time of the assignment or the price paid for it.

Consequently, the degree of development of the building under construction constitutes an essential element to be taken into account when determining the tax base of the operation.

In our example, “Z” is subject to the tax on property transfers on the real value of the construction at the time of the assignment; this is 150,000 Euros and is calculated at a tax rate of eight per cent. This practical case does not imply any legal case or tax advice. Any similar situation must be analysed carefully and should always be carried out by consulting with the corresponding tax offices.
